OH
Happy Trans Day of Visibility × Easter (or "Treaster" if you're in the know) everyone! I'm Taxi/Tassy/Juju and today I am ALL of those things. I make video games and draw funny animal people, often at the same time!
(music by wheel_able)
If you'd really like to support my personal work, I've got a patreon and a ko-fi, but if you've only got a little to spare, PLEASE consider giving it other transfolk who need it more than I do. For now, enjoy my wildly inconsistent output~! (´▽`ʃƪ)

I worked at the Bronx Zoo in 1995 and there was an old man volunteering there who in the 1920s saw their live thylacine. Sad conversation with him b/c he'd always known it was a special opportunity to see it, but he couldn't describe it as anything special - what he was saying was what you would say if asked to describe the video clips. The pure experience of it cannot be transmitted. I have loved thylacines my whole life and feel cheated. We were all cheated.
Woah! Lucky you :D There are probably not that many (if any) people alive today who saw a thylacine as kids and were old enough then to remember it still, since the last one died in 1936. Pretty cool that you met someone who did and got the chance to talk to him about it! Even if he didn't find it that special, I'd say that that puts you closer to tassies than most of us will ever be in a way :P Not many people can say they saw an extinct animal alive, so I think that alone is pretty cool too. I'd have asked him to describe so many details he'd probs be annoyed, lol. I can see why some people would think they aren't special, but I do. Yes, a lot of the wonder and mistique around them comes from the fact that they are extinct, but I think they're special on their own.
Possums that looked like wolves. What's not to love?
I love that you sent this ask, actually. It warmed my thylacine-loving heart in a way :'3 have some other pictures I took in the museum as a thank you (the lighting there is terrible for pics, but hopefully you enjoy it still)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But honestly, I get you. There are things that can't be said with words, and I think experiences are one of those things. Even with the most eloquent of descriptions, I think you can never fully understand what someone else went through or felt at a certain situation. I know that if I got to see a living thylacine, I'd never be able to convey what it meant to me. Even if most people found it dumb/didn't get why it was special to me. Heck, people at the museum were probably confused as to why I was crying at a mounted animal oop
It's sad, but in a way, thylacines disappeared twice. Once when the last one passed away, and again when the last people who saw them alive passed away too. First they were gone, and lived on only as memories. Now that the memories are gone as well since those people are (most likely) gone too, we only have the ghosts - the pictures, the drawings, the videos, which shape the ideas we get of them. Like you said, you, and I, and anyone else who wishes to see them, were robbed.
All we have of the thylacine is old. A video I've seen a million times, pictures that will never move or make a sound. We were robbed of so much when it comes to them. We were robbed of their sound, of their colors, their behavior. We have nothing now. We'll never know what they sounded like, or watch them hunt, or learn more about them. Really, all we have is ghosts and other people's memories as we look at the pictures other people took.
And that will have to do.
Little story for yall: when I was at the museum, there was a little girl with her dad there too. She'd jump from one animal to another, asking him to tell her where each animal lived (as the exibitions were labeled by place of origin of the animals). They got to the tassie the same time that I did, and when she asked "where does this one live?" he read the sign and replied "It doesn't live anymore. It doesn't have a home anywhere. They're gone."
And then they walked away, and I didn't see them anymore. But man, that hit hard. I keep hearing that in my head, over and over again.
It doesn't live anymore.
It doesn't have a home anywhere.
They're gone.
That dad and little girl probably didn't think anything of it. But I'll never forget that. How thylacines once lived, once had a home.
And now, there's none.
Been thinking of incorporating those sentences into a drawing of them or smth. I know it's very r/im14andthisisdeep but let me weird about them ok they make me sad
But yeah, that's my thylacine rant for the night. Because there aren't enough of those in my blog :P Thanks again for this, as it allowed me to ramble oops. Hope you doing well!

Dragon A Day 2023: DAY TWENTY: An Ancient
I knew I had to pick a Banescale in honour of Pheel's obsession with them :P
This is Gumnut, another of my million dragons with no lore or design. I went with a mammalian look for her, and since she and her mate (and their kids) are named after Australian trees, I based her off another Aussie animal, the tassie devil! Still no clue on lore but at least she LOOKS cool now haha. I think if I ever get around to drawing a fullbody of her I want her Plumage to look like gumleaves

i don't know how to sound serious in saying this. but as a representative of tasmania, your existence is Very Important and again i don't really know how to explain the extent of why. so let me outline some of the achievements of Tasmania Representatives:
your carbon footprint is zero. you get to have none of the guilt us mainlanders live with. especially when us mainlanders get several times the amount of sun we need to power our homes. and yet, tasmanians are the ones to power everything with renewable electricity
you're part of the only state in which hydroelectricity might be seen as bad for the environment and have a history of protests (one of which started the greens party, which is responsible for our actually alright for once climate targets) and yet has enough hydro to you know, see point above
stewards of the land in which jurassic park tassie tiger is coming
good buses!! every time you ride a bus in hobart you do a Good
stewards of the coastline of penguins!! we need tasmanians to watch the penguins and make sure they get to their nests under the boardwalk safe.
you survived the Ozone Hole probably more intensely than the rest of us, you deserve a celebration for that
the derwent being actually a kinda decent example of water sensitive urban design
and for you specifically:
8. drawing a map of hobart from memory!! you're a natural. you should come solve all the world's problems (and i am not exaggerating) using urban design with me!!
thank you so much, im sorry this was in my inbox for so long.

Just read somewhere that thylacines may have had more horizontal-like pupils like mongooses and mustelids. But on the other hand, their close relative the Tassie devil has round pupils. Which one to use when drawing them...

I was drawing random animal hybrids for fun and felt inspired to redesign my oc Ourem's species. Instead of being more dog-based I've changed them a bit so that they're now a marsupial species, taking cues from tassie tigers (I'll have to draw one with a joey in her pouch). I actually think I'm going to have all the animals in my fictional fantasy world be Australian inspired, because why not?

Yeah I am, I liked Manly but Tassie is my home. Have you lived in Sydney your whole life?
Yep! I feel like that's pretty typical for people from Sydney and Melbourne though, less of a draw to other places. Whereabouts in Tas? I've thought about moving down there one day, I like the cold.

ABOUT US-
Sammy (by Soph):
This all round incredible human was not put on this earth to be just your run-of-the-mill person. Oh no, she is one of a kind our Sammy. You won’t find her ironing, cleaning or organising her finances, because there just simply is not the time. She’s here to squeeze every last drop out of this most magical life.
Sammy has an indescribably warm and contagiously jovial energy, and doesn’t take things too seriously. She’s not afraid to be her goofy self, regardless of the company. Sammy is a ‘heck yes’ kinda gal, and will be up for giving almost anything a good nudge. When it comes to style, she’s got it in bucketloads. It’s hard to know what came first; yellow crocs or Sammy P.
Making a home in Tasmania, you’ll find when she’s not working as a kick-ass emergency physiotherapist, she’ll be throwing herself into one of her many hobbies.
Sammy is a talented long distance open water swimmer, the colder the better, and has over the years achieved swimming goals most can only dream of. Her most recent feats include becoming the first female to swim the length of Lake St Clair, and an impossibly cold 10 degree 34km swim of the Gordon river over 2 days, in Tasmania. Other swims in her quiver include the English Channel and the North Channel in the UK.
With her preferred breakfast being the tarmac, riding is one of her biggest passions. Focusing on longer distances and bigger climbs, Sammy did a 6 day trip around the whole of Tasmania on her roadie (Fern), covering 630km and a whole heap elevation.
She’s dabbled in off-road riding/bike packing throwing herself in at the deep end with the Tassie Trail (more on that later), and since then has been cooking up wild adventures with her fellow yes-girl/writer of this blog, Soph.
You’ll catch Sammy shredding the trails on two feet, and it’s only a matter of time before this converts to two wheels too (we’re still working on that).
Sammy inspires me with her strength and ability to regularly test the limit of her mind and body. Though our friendship has been short so far, it’s hard to imagine a future without Sammy. The experiences we have shared, have helped to create one of the best years of our lives so far. I am incredibly hopeful that there will be many more adventures to come.
‘Go-getter’ definition: Sammy P.
Sophie (by Sammy):
Sophie was raised in sunny old England and is a lover of all things outdoors, ultimate yes woman, enduro-athlete, health care wizard and loyal friend.
Australia counted it’s lucky stars when she decided to grace us with her presence to study nursing and paramedicine in Brisbane back in 2016, then moving to Tasmania in 2022 to start a grad program at the Royal Hobart Hospital.
Biking is one of her many many many talents. She’s an avid hiker, trail runner, dip-your-toe-in-triathlete and rock climber. With an incredible list of accomplishments to her name (we’re talking the Te Arora solo, running the overland track in one push, now I forget the actual details but she walked some stupid amount through the Australian bush 145km in three days, and many other rogue mish’s).
She’s a woman with many facets aside from adventure, and by day (and night) is an emergency nurse. I’m lucky enough to work beside her and have witnessed her in action: she’s incredibly capable, calm and caring. The most beautiful chapter in Tassie is drawing to a close as she embarks on her next venture, a stint in Wellington New Zealand to complete her paramedicine program.
Every pair needs an organiser, a lifter and practical can do-er and this is Sophie in spades. She has a knack for getting things done as well a general handiness when it comes to all things practical. I am forever grateful for her go get ‘em attitude.
I’ve known this epic gal for one year only and can only imagine the places we will have seen come 50 years. She’s my best mate, she makes a mean playlist, always orders the best food, has party stamina like no other and twerks like an awkward pre pubescent teen.
I hope this has been an insightful and earnest report of the all things SOPHIE-GIRL.
