Morning prayer on Sukkoth in a private apartment, Kazan, Tatarstan (Russia), 1993
A predominantly Muslim city, Kazan's residents take pride in their long history of coexistence with the local Jewish and Christian communities. The city’s mascot is Zilna the dragon, who, legend has it, “keeps the hate away” from this region. Jews lived here from the 18th century, most of them being veterans from the tsar's army. In 1926, there were 4,156 Jews in the city, comprising 2.3 of the total population. While a number of Kazan's Jews managed to practice their religion and preserve their Jewish identity in the following decades, much of Jewish life during the Soviet era was suppressed and conducted underground. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the synagogue was reopened, a Jewish youth choir was established and klezmer concerts as well as public Passover seders attracted hundreds of Jews and non-Jews from all over Tatarstan.

"In Tatarstan, you can find a bus-church decked out with domes & equipped with essential Church supplies. The priest sits behind the wheel and drives the bus to remote villages around the country. The priest sold his car so that he could build the church. The bus can hold up to 50 parishioners."
