Just read the drabble and I honestly feel so enraged, this man needs some tight fierce kick from his wife.
Can it be like she makes him 'feel' sorry without him realising like it's a natural instinct, he gets a cold shoulder from her, she looks blank and lifeless, no reaction, he keeps on doing little things to make up for the fuck up. Though it's a big expectation from him he's kaiho! jeongguk but we can't ignore the fact that he loves her like crazy too.
It's like he warms up seeing her with their son, forcing out a smile for the little one. He notices the scars and bruises he gave her. Then it ends into a make up sex.
Don't expect a big reaction from him but this needs a healing drabble for the aching heart of oc.

jeongguk watched for a while from the doorframe, watched as your body kept slumping down from the fatigue but you straightened up your back every time and kept sitting quietly, your fingers caressing kento's cheek while he continued feeding.
when kento's eyes started closing from the sleep, jeongguk walked away to the bedroom to wait for you.
five minutes passed, then ten minutes passed too but you were not coming back. curious, jeongguk stood up from the bed and headed to the nursery only to find kento in his crib, sleeping snuggly with his soft toys while you had fallen asleep on your knees leaning on the side of the crib. passed out would be a better term.
sighing, your husband made his way to your limp body, careful to not wake up his toddler. he picked you up gently before heading to your shared bedroom.
laying you down on your side of the bed, he switched off the lights and walked to the living room, to have another drink.

jeongguk must have fallen asleep on the couch in the living room as he woke up with a heavy head. last night's scotch did a number on him. the rays of sunlight felt like small needles piercing through his irises. letting a soft groan, he tried to raise his left arm to cover his eyes from the invading sun when he felt the presence of a blanket on him. he did not sleep with one. his eyes opened in a snap, small black orbs still trying to adjust to the brightness in the room when he pieced it together that you must have put the blanket on him.
after all he did last night, all that he put you through, all that he made you endure — you still had the humanity left in you put a blanket on him.
pushing the blanket off him, he sat up when his feet planted on one of kento's squeaky toys making a loud noise. he retracted his feet at once, cursing at himself but his features softened when he heard kento's laugh from another room. the toddler appeared from his nursery, crawling his way to locate the noise and on seeing his father he quickened up his pace. bam came up behind him, his always on-duty babysitter. as far as jeongguk remembers he had dropped off bam at the kennel yesterday when he first realized that you had run away. the kennel keeper must have returned the sweet boy while he was sleeping like a log.
jeongguk stood up and walked over to pick up the toddler, "hey buddy, where's mum?" he looked around for his wife, his eyes searching the bedroom hallway.
kento's small wrist clasped around jeongguk's sweatshirt drawstrings, tugging at them as he babbled some ineligible sounds, to which jeongguk let a chuckle.
it was almost time for him to leave for work so he walked with the toddler towards his bedroom when he heard the faint sounds and understood that you are taking a shower. you must have kept kento in his playing space on the nursery floor with bam on guard before going to the bathroom.
jeongguk put kento down in the middle of the bed, bam followed and sat down beside the toddler, his body shielding him from the open end of the bed. knowing it was safe to look away, jeongguk quickly freshened up and dressed up in his work gear. he was putting his jacket on when you finished washing up and stepped out of the bathroom.
"where is my badge," your husband mumbled under his breath, looking around the nightstand.
patting dry your hair with a towel, you could see that the badge was in kento's hands; the toddler tugging at its chain, but you kept quiet and feigned a blind eye.
after checking all the drawers, jeongguk turned around and saw kento playing with his badge, "hey, i need that back," he gently tried to remove the badge from his son's hand but kento only tightened his grip, his face contorting into one of annoyance as he babbled some words, as if scolding his father for trying to take away his plaything.
"cmon buddy, i am already late," instead of trying to pull it away with force, jeongguk picked up kento again and tried to barter the badge for a squeaky toy he picked up from the floor. the house is filled with toys. that is jeongguk's love language, he is awkward when tasked with spending time with his child but keeps buying toys non-stop.
"see, this one makes noise," he kept squeaking it, trying get kento's attention but kento held onto the badge like his life depended on it.
growing impatient with his cellphone constantly vibrating in his trousers pocket, jeongguk somehow retrieved the badge from the toddler's death claws and tried replacing it with the squeaky chicken but the toddler, as stubborn as his father, started wailing. dropping the stupid yellow chicken on the floor, he started making grabby hands for the badge.
"cmon, you're on my side, right? we will play when i come back," jeongguk tried to talk to his son but was only met with the latter's high pitched wails in reply.
the entire time, you had just been doing your skincare routine, not giving a second glace towards the father-son duo doing their drug deal. taking out some neosporin, you applied it gently on the back of your left elbow where you had sustained a gash from last night's ordeal.
walking over to where you sitting on the ottoman in front of the dressing table, jeongguk placed the crying child in your lap and kept leaning as his eyes took in the bruises he left behind.
you did not meet his eyes and held your son, a small smile on your lips as you started to sway him in your arms which seemed to calm the demon child down a bit.
jeongguk wanted to say something but found himself at a loss of words. he quietly removed himself from towering over you and walked out.

it has been three weeks since detective jeon jeongguk has heard his wife's voice. well that is technically a lie because he sometimes hear you talking to kento, your voice dripping with affection, adoration and love and then the moment you are aware of your husband's presence, it was like you retracted yourself. he has not even seen you smiling either, only ever seeing it from the side when you are smiling and playing with the toddler.
jeongguk has tried everything; talking to you is like talking to a wall. you do not even breathe in his direction let alone reply to him. no words, no gestures, no expressions — whatever he asks or says is just met with pin drop silence. he tried getting angry at you for that, raising his voice, threatening to punish you for giving him the silent treatment but there was not even a change in your expression to any of those empty threats. yes, they were empty threats and a part of you knew that as well; you had seen the worst of him that unfortunate night, it could not get worse than that. and even if it gets bad, what is the worst that can happen? he will end up killing you? well, death does not scare you anymore. as long as kento is taken care of, you just simply do not care.
jeongguk even tried to go on a hunger strike; he refused to eat any meals. well, it did not make a difference because you weren't exactly insisting for him to eat. food was made and kept in the kitchen, whoever wanted to eat, whenever they wanted to eat, they were free to do so and in case jeongguk does not eat, you just clean up and clear everything. so the hunger strike only weakened jeongguk but there were no other gains to it. you were still the unmoving pillar.
at nights, sleeping in the same bed, if his hands even accidentally touched you, you would just proceed to take your clothes off; still the same emotionless face. jeongguk yelled at you one night — it was psychologically fucked up — you were not a prostitute, you were his wife.
"what's wrong with you!" his yell boomed in the closed space before he threw away the covers in a hurry and made his way to the living room to sleep on the couch. ever since, he has slept on the couch. he is too scared to witness that sight again. it gives him nightmares, he wakes up some nights in cold sweat. when he cannot sleep, he walks over to kento's nursery and sleeps at the feet of the crib — in the same position he had found you, passed out, that night.
nothing — none of that incites a reaction or a reply from you. sounds only come out of your throat when they are directed at kento or bam. you eat alone when he is not home, you take showers in the empty house and refuse to step out of the house. when he is home, he only ever sees you with a book in hand.
this one time there were no groceries left in the refrigerator. simple! you just stopped cooking. one day was sustained by cereals, the next day by instant ramen and when all of the packeted food finished up, you just stopped eating. this went on for three days before jeongguk finally realized why you had stopped cooking. he just thought you were angry at him and did not want to cook for him anymore and since you used to do everything in his absence, it took him a while to catch up to the fact that the refrigerator was empty and that you had not eaten anything.
"are you fucking sick or what? kento depends on you, he needs you to eat."
you did not even turn to him, quietly making your way to the nursery with a bottle in your hand.
he followed you and watched as you started feeding kento with the bottle.
oh, formula. that still does not excuse the fact that you need to eat. giving up getting you to talk, jeongguk headed to the twenty-four seven supermarket and bought as much food supplies as his car could fit. he restocked the kitchen, the refrigerator and went to sleep on an empty stomach on the couch.

another week passed, when on one fine sunday morning, jeongguk swallowed his ego and contacted kim tanaz. he was at his wit's end, he does not know anymore how to fix this. he needs to hear your voice, he needs to hear your laugh or he is going to crazy.
your dear friend refused at first but jeongguk insisted that you needed her. finding no further reason to reject the invitation, tanaz had begrudgingly agreed. it isn't like tanaz does not want to talk to you, it is just the fact that it's jeon jeongguk that contacted her. that raised red flags in her mind. had it been you calling her over, she would run to you and baby kento.
when the bell rang, jeongguk was overjoyed to open the door, if he was on better terms with tanaz, he would have hugged her, "thank you so much for coming," his smile was blinding.
"you broke her, didn't you?" tanaz asked, her voice unsure. she cannot forget that aura this man had exuded that night. she just cannot get over that.
completely glossing over that comment, jeongguk ushered her inside, closing the door behind her, "y/n doesn't know you're here so it'll be a pleasant surprise."
"is... is she okay?" there was a desperation in tanaz's voice. she sounded terrified.
"she just needs to talk, i guess," jeongguk flashed another smile before showing her to the bedroom where you were reading a book while kento slept curled up under the covers.
jeongguk sat on the small stool in kento's nursery. since the nursery was just on the other side of the bedroom, he could hear you. he did not care what you talk about with your friend, he just wants to hear your voice, that is enough.
"what did he do?" tanaz's voice was stern as she made her way to her childhood best friend and sat on the edge of the bed facing her.
"how are you?" you asked instead, after clearing the lump in your throat.
"i asked you something, y/n," tanaz reiterated.
"could you quickly check up kento? i haven't been able to make the paediatrician's appointments..."
"y/n...," tanaz interrupted but you continued.
"... i have recently started giving him formula. i am also giving him some mashed rice but mostly breastfeeding."
sighing tanaz turned to kento, "he will be fine, he has you for his mom."
"he is trying to stand up these days. he falls over but he tries his best. crawling isn't cutting it for him anymore," you mentioned, re-fixing the covers over kento, gently running your fingers through the wisp of hair on his temple.
you continued, "i think i should baby proof the furniture around here."
"y/n, i have to ask again, what has happened?" tanaz was gently patting kento's rising and falling chest, matching his breathing.
"i don't know what you're talking about. i'm not sure why you are here either," your words cut deep, your voice left no space for any empathy.
tanaz grimaced at such a reply, "uh i am here cause your parents have been worried about you. i think you should visit them with kento."
"they don't need to worry about me. no one does."
"you're talking like a crazy person, get yourself together," tanaz scoffed, "do you think that is going to leave a positive impact on kento?" she tried to strike where it would hurt you the most; questioning your parenting.
it seemed to work; not much but just a bit as your features softened, your eyes never leaving kento's, the eyes welling up with tears.
by the time a few tears escaped your eyelids, tanaz scooted over and pulled you in a hug. her hold was unmistakable, the grip tight and reassuring. she had locked you between her arms, scared that if she might just loosen the grip even a bit, you would disperse into thin air.
there were no words, you just softly cried in her arms, staining the material of her shirt. you refused to make a single noise, body vibrating to take in breaths between the non-stop crying.

another week passed since tanaz paid you a visit. jeongguk still cannot get you to say a word until one day when he came back from work and head to the kitchen to find a pot on the stove. the stove was off and jeongguk was starving so he went to take off the steel lid when you swatted his hand away.
"it's hot."
"right, sorr-" jeongguk stopped mid-sentence as the realization hit him, "you.. baby, you talked to me."
you moved the hot-pot to the dining table with the help of mittens and served a plate, "eat it before it gets cold."
you meant to walk away but jeongguk caught your wrist to which your immediate reaction was to withdraw into yourself. he let go of your hand at once, "fuck, i am sorry but can we eat together? please?" his eyes sparkled as he stared at you, forcing himself to anticipate only a positive response.
you stood there quietly and turned again to walk away.
jeongguk grazed your hand this time, scared he will push you away, "please baby, i am begging you please. i will get on my knees if i have to."
you kept quiet, still facing the other way. there was a muffled thud causing you to turn back to see your husband on his knees.
"please, just eat with me. it's killing me, i just can't do this anymore."
it was pathetic, him begging for mercy on his knees — just absolutely pathetic. it hurt your ego a bit. he is supposed to be this amazing police officer, right? he broke too easily, you haven't even served him an ounce of what he made you go through.
scoffing, you walked to the table and sat down, arranging a plate for yourself. deciding against waiting for him, you started eating.
jeongguk hurried to the chair beside you and started eating as well, "it's delicious."
you chewed quietly.
"i know kento's appointment is tomorrow for the vaccine, i will be home around lunch and we will go together, okay?"
"you can take him alone, i don't need to be there," you casually mentioned, focusing solely on your food.
"you're dreaming if you think he'd last without you even for ten minutes. plus, i can never calm him down and the vaccine is going to hurt."
defeated, you sighed and gave a curt nod.

five weeks after you came back following the unsuccessful escape, you finally stepped a foot out of the house, the house that you have treated like a prison the past few weeks.
there was a honk outside, jeongguk's car. it was exactly one o'clock and he was outside to take you and kento to the paediatrician's clinic.
with kento on your hip, you exited the house and were surprised to find jeongguk standing with the passenger door open. rolling eyes, you ascended the car and strapped yourself, holding kento on your lap.
the ride to the clinic went by without a word, the veil of silence broken by kento's babbles sometimes as he tried to beat open the passenger side window with the lollipop-shaped rattle in his hand.
you were sitting in the clinic, trying to hold down kento so he could get the shot but he kept wiggling away. your husband took over and held the restless toddler down, exposing his bum to the doctor who dabbed the smooth skin with a seventy percent isopropyl alcohol solution before pricking the skin with the needle. the needle size was bigger than usual injections and hence required more force to push it in.
kento's face contorted before he let out a loud wail, trying to wiggle away but jeongguk firmly held him down. you felt tears pricking your eyelids as you stood behind where jeongguk was sat on the stool. you wanted to take kento away, to make this pain stop but he needed the vaccine. trying to keep your hands busy you kept a hand on jeongguk's shoulder, gripping on the material of shirt tightly into a fist.
"almost done, bud," your husband cooed to your son, massaging the injected spot as soon as the doctor was done.
"there you go! he would need a booster shot in another six months," dr choi spoke after discarding the used injection.
you nodded, watching jeongguk stand up holding kento who was hugging his father, his head rested on his shoulder, fat tears still streaming down his face along with a string of snot.
by the time you walked back to the car to head back home, you tried to take kento but he refused to loosen his grip on jeongguk.
"it's okay, you drive," jeongguk walked to the other side of the car and ascended the vehicle.
you would have kept up with your silent treatment but since your eyes were constantly on the road, you could not help but ask him for updates.
"has he fallen asleep?" "is he still crying?" "does he want to come to me?" "if he's hungry let me know."

after jeongguk dropped you home, kento drove you absolutely crazy. he had a bump on his cute little bum at the spot where he got the injection. even an accidental graze there had him bawling his eyes out and he refused to calm down. poor thing cried himself to sleep every time he was reminded of the pain.
there was relief in the toddler's eyes when he saw his father at night.
"hey bud, what's wrong?" jeongguk picked up his son who was in your lap but he kept making grabby hands at him.
you raised an eyebrow as kento quieted down as soon as he was in jeongguk's arms. kento rested his head on his father's chest, his small fingers playing with the button of jeongguk's shirt. kento has never been one to be overly affectionate towards his father so such a reaction genuinely surprised you.
"has he eaten?" jeongguk brought you back from your daze as he walked towards the bedroom.
you shook your head, "he wouldn't eat, he has only cried himself all day."
"he's running a fever."
you rushed to kento's side and placed your palm on his forehead. he was fine just a while ago.
"try and feed him, i will get some meds," he handed kento to back you.
this time kento was quiet and latched to your neck, tired eyes closing up.
"hey hey, you gotta eat first," you reminded the child, much like you have reminded his father many a times and proceeded to lay him on your lap before breastfeeding. surprisingly, this time kento did not resist and latched on.

that night, neither of you got any sleep as kento woke up every two-three hours, crying from the pain. his fever had lowered now but poor thing had a congested nose.
early in the morning when your eyes blinked open, you saw kento curled into your husband, whose arm was enveloping the toddler firmly.
you do not know how long you watched that sight but immediately closed your eyes and pretended to fall asleep when jeongguk's alarm went off.

the next day, kento's fever was gone and he had started playing with bam again. his cackles filing up your abode.
your husband had taken a day off to be by his son's side and they played together for most of the morning.
you were quietly folding laundry when you heard jeongguk walking in the bedroom after he put kento to sleep after lunch.
"can we talk?"
you stacked kento's folded clothes one over the other, "kento does not have a fever anymore. we don't have to go to the doctor's, i talked to tanaz."
"that's not what i meant."
your hands stopped, "there's nothing to talk about."
"i know i can't ask for forgiveness but i can't do this either. i just went through five weeks without hearing your voice. please let's just talk."
"and i just told you, there is nothing to talk about. i am fine. this is what you wanted, right? pliant little housewife."
"i did what i did cause i was angry. you had run away with our son, y/n."
"and that excuses your behaviour?!" you raised your voice, unknowingly.
"i don't know! talk to me! tell me what to do."
"the fucking nerve you have," you turned around this time, eyes boring holes at him, "you think anything can fix what you did?"
"i don't know! i don't care! all i know is that i just fucking love you," there was brief moment of nothing — unsteady heavy breaths — before jeongguk closed the distance between you two, claiming a wanton kiss from you.
you could not fight him. well, mentally you wanted to but your body did not quite register the commands of your brain as you found yourself kissing him back. you grabbed his collar, not caring about wrinkling the fabric before pulling his face closer to you by the collar, kissing him back with the same fervour.

jeongguk laid you down gently on the bed, making space for him between your legs and sinking down on top of you.
he broke the kiss, his hand caressing your cheek, "i love you," he left soft kisses on your lips, each one lasting longer than the last one. his other hand travelled down the valley of your breasts to nestle underneath your trousers. the pads of his fingers rubbing the slit of your entrance from over the material of your panties.
his touch was ghost-like, his lips ghosting over yours dipping down once in a while to plant a open mouthed kiss while his fingers worked your bundle of nerves.
short gasps left your lips at the subtle movement. it was like russian roulette, sometimes his fingers did not graze your nub but then sometimes it did, building up anticipation. your arousal soaked and formed a patch on your panties. feeling the faint wetness through the material, jeongguk pushed the cloth aside and finally touched you. his finger dipped in the arousal and lodged itself deep inside you. moving in a linear motion inside the wet cavern, his fingernail grazing along the ridges and bumps inside you.
your spine grew straight and dipped against the mattress when you felt jeongguk adding another finger in the mix. his lips attached to your neck, attacking directly at your soft spot, licking up a stripe and sucking at it while his fingers relentlessly worked your tensed bundle of nerves.

Japanese Linguistic Observations in Spy x Family - part 1
This is a post series I've been planning for a while and I've finally had the time to complete part 1! 😃 I may have mentioned here before that I got my B.A. in Japanese/East Asian Studies, and even though I'm not fluent, I know the linguistics of the language fairly well. So I thought it would be fun to examine the interesting aspects of the Japanese version of the SxF manga that aren't reflected in the English translation. It might also be an informative experience for those who don't know any Japanese to learn a bit about the language through SxF! I'll try not to get too technical with the linguistics and keep my explanations at a beginner's level.

Part 1 - Twilight's "honne and tatemae"
One of the main themes in SxF is how many of the characters have secrets they want to hide, so they act a certain way in front of others in order to mask their true selves. Japanese has a word for this phenomena called 本音と建前 ("honne and tatemae").

I remember learning about the concept of "honne and tatemae" during my Japanese college studies – a quick google search will yield a lot of publications on the topic and its relation to Japanese culture in particular. While the idea of hiding one's true intentions behind a fake facade can exist anywhere and is not something unique to Japan, it is enough of an occurrence in Japanese culture that there are specific words for it. The Wiki article has a basic but good definition of honne and tatemae, to quote:
A person's honne may be contrary to what is expected by society or what is required according to one's position and circumstances, and they are often kept hidden, except with one's closest friends. Tatemae is what is expected by society and required according to one's position and circumstances, and these may or may not match one's honne. In many cases, tatemae leads to outright telling of lies in order to avoid exposing the true inward feelings.
Sounds very much like the characters in SxF, doesn't it? Twilight especially, because unlike other characters like Yor and Anya, who simply have secrets they need to keep but don't create fake personas for themselves, Twilight does – the cheerful, friendly Loid Forger is a different person from the cold, calculating Twilight after all. Also unlike Yor and Anya, who speak the same way consistently no matter who they're talking to, Twilight uses different speech levels depending on which persona he's using and who he's talking to.

There are many different levels of speech in Japanese, ranging from super formal to totally crude. These speech levels are distinguished mostly by the pronouns the speaker chooses to use for themselves and who they're speaking to, as well as how they choose to conjugate the words they use. For example, 座ってください (suwatte kudasai), 座って (suwatte,) and 座れ (suware) all mean "sit," as in, telling someone to sit down. But the tone being conveyed is different: the first one is polite, the second one is casual, and the last one could be seen as rude if you're not using it with a close friend/family member.
As Twilight, he uses casual speech with the masculine and less polite pronoun 俺 or オレ (ore). This is the speech he uses when talking to a fellow spy like Fiona, and for his own inner thoughts.

As Loid Forger, he uses the polite 敬語 (keigo) speech, which is basically comprised of using the -ます (-masu) conjugation for verbs and the "to be" verb です (desu). He also uses the pronoun ボク or 僕 (boku), which is the standard male pronoun and more polite than "ore." He uses keigo to address pretty much everyone who doesn't know his true identity. Anya is an exception to this: with her, he uses his most casual speech, the same as he uses with Franky.

I discussed a bit about this in part 24 of my Twiyor analysis posts, but this could be because Anya is a little kid, so he doesn't feel the need to put on any airs with her (same with Bond, whom he also uses casual speech with).
An interesting side note is that, as a child, Twilight used the pronoun "boku" but then changed to "ore" as soon as he became an adult/soldier.

Another aspect of keigo, besides using the more polite forms of pronouns and verb conjugations, is putting the honorific さん (san) after people's names. Twilight does this all the time with Yor, as she does with him. However, he switches to casual speech and drops the "san" part in her name when addressing her in front of people who (supposedly) believe they're a real married couple, such as Yuri and Fiona – because it would be weird for a real couple who have been married for a year to address each other in such a formal way, especially the husband. In the below panel when Fiona visits them, he's calling her "Yor" instead of "Yor-san" and using casual speech instead of keigo.

Oddly in these situations, while he uses just "Yor" when addressing her directly, he still calls her "Yor-san" when talking about her. During Yuri's first visit for example, he calls her "Yor-san" when telling Yuri how much Anya loves her (talking to someone about her) but then calls her just "Yor" a few moments later when telling her that he'll clean up the spill (talking to her directly). It's strange to me that he wouldn't just consistently use "Yor" whether he's talking to her or about her in these situations...I'm honestly not sure if he does this intentionally or if he just slips up since he's so used to using "Yor-san" in her presence.

"In Japanese, when speaking to your spouse's family about your spouse, you address her/him by attaching "san" her/his name out of respect for her/his family. This is also to show her/his family that you respect your spouse. That's why Loid calls Yor with san when he talks about how much he loves Yor to Yuri."
That definitely makes sense for why Twilight switches between "Yor" and "Yor-san" in these situations.

Regardless, this is why the scene in chapter 86 is so significant – when Yor isn't present, there's no reason for him to refer to her as "Yor-san," especially in front of a fellow spy like Fiona who knows he (supposedly) shouldn't have any feelings for her. Yet, even after he just called Yuri by his full name "Yuri Briar" a moment before, he doesn't do the same for Yor and continues to call her "Yor-san" here, much to Fiona's dismay.

In the same chapter, it's also significant that he uses "ore" when addressing Yor directly in his thoughts. Even though he's not speaking out loud, I believe this is the first time he's speaking directly "to" her as Twilight and/or his true self and not as Loid Forger.

But despite all this, I think that both Loid Forger and Twilight are tatemae…they're both masks to hide the person he truly is. The person who fondly talked about his mother to Yor on the park bench, the person who genuinely expressed gratitude for her sacrifice when leaving the resort island, the person who refused to kill Yuri in a life-or-death struggle because he knew it would hurt her…that's his actual honne. But of course, the ongoing conflict of the series is that he has yet to realize this. He won't even show his honne to his closest friend, Franky. Seems like it mostly comes out in dribs and drabs during his interactions with Yor...no surprise there, lol. The man is certainly a work in progress. When he finally starts letting his "honne" show, I'm curious what form of speech he'll adopt.

Also obsessed with how she’s the physical and metaphorical embodiment of a cherry blossom…
In Japan, the cherry blossom possesses contradicting significances and embodies matters that are mutually incompatible.
While cherry blossoms are aesthetically beautiful, they also represent violence and the ephemerality of life. From an individual level, cherry blossoms displayed both the joy of life (reproductivity, feminine sexuality, etc.) and the sorrowful side of life (impermanence of things and the significance of death).
The dual nature of cherry blossoms is present in Sakura as a character. This is made blatant through the appearance of sakura vs inner sakura which is clearly a metaphor for the concept of honne vs tatemae.
To further elaborate, the dual nature of her character is the crux of many of her inner conflicts throughout the series and it is also what fuels her growth. In both of these situations, Sakura is unable to express how she truly feels. Her actions contradict her thoughts and feelings, this is a consistent aspect of character within the manga.

Throughout the manga, she mentally struggles with being a shinobi. Her growth as a character is dependent upon her inner conflicts contradicting one another in an attempt to understand what it means to be a shinobi. Are they merely tools for the state, or is there something more?
The land of waves arc covers this explicitly but this question is posed once again for Sakura during Sasori vs Sakura where Sakura’s opponent, Sasori, quite literally turned himself into an emotionless puppet in order to deal with being a shinobi. He is the product of the teachings of Sunagakure, an oppressive military regime like many other shinobi villages, but also the result of someone who refuses to let go thus filling him with grief and resentment over the years (Art is eternal). It is no coincidence that Sakura, whose namesake symbolizes the fleeting impermanence of human existence, is the one to fight him.
Tied to the Buddhist themes of mortality, mindfulness and living in the present, Japanese cherry blossoms are a timeless metaphor for human existence. According to Buddhism, we live in the very midst of universal, fleeting impermanence. Any refusal to let go entirely whatever has now vanished inevitably leads to pain.
The meaning of cherry blossoms is also said to reflect the philosophy of a Japanese person, who lives in a country of impermanence, of earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanos. Thus, like cherry petals, they are willing to fall at the height of one’s life due to their awareness of the impermanence of life. The death of one’s flesh means a returning to the kami’s land, and the cherry flower becomes the bridge that links life to death.

Which aspects of Katsuki's personality are his honne and which are his tatemae? And which traits overlap? Could you elaborate on that?
In my opinion, almost all the things he does are both, but they are also...not. This is kinda what makes it fun, I think.
Maybe somewhere between DvK 1 and the remediation arc, I'm fairly certain his crappiest pettiness has all been absolutely truthful and honest, but the exaggerated application of it to create a specific impression has been a ploy. I'm pretty sure that it's mentioned explicitly that Katsuki likes people to assume he's dumb and brash before doing something clever so he gets them off guard, and this is kind of like that. It's better for him if others think they know his motive and are framing it as totally petty and selfish. It's not untrue, but it's not the whole truth.
Katsuki also prefers to get his point across in as few words as possible, so if you don't catch a second implication or a ham-fisted double-meaning ("I" and "we" can be ambiguous, so any statements by the end of the manga that are, like, "I'm gonna help Deku!" OR "We [as in all of 1-A, of which Bakugo is now comfortable identifying as a part of]'re gonna help Deku!" are both true at the same time), the message probably wasn't meant for you in the first place.
The most consistent trait I'd say Katsuki always has is sensitivity. He's an extremely sensitive little git, so the biggest shows of his true, unfiltered self always get me because it's when his cup runneth over so much that he can’t put any kind of spin on it: His eyes while captured by the sludge villain (upon reflection, this might be the single most important panel of the manga, actually), him totally failing to grapple with and communicate his feelings to Izuku at the end of chapter 1 (this is a bad example - instead of saying thank you or crying like a little twerp, he totally tried to front it like he didn't need Deku's help, which was about as see-through as a piece of cellophane. Idiot. Still a great moment, though), crying outside the school after DvK1 ("I'll beat you all!" Sure, kid), the moment he hits Izuku in the face during their exam against All Might (there's no freaky smile in this moment - he just freezes and hits him in unbridled anger), the end of the Sports Festival when Todoroki is knocked out - he grabs Todoroki's shirt and is about to have a breakdown (did you know this is my second-favorite moment? Did you know that the US fandom's assumptions about Katsuki's motives in this moment made me want to start beating them to death with my bare hands? Did you know I walked away from this series after that because I couldn't stand how little emotional intelligence people have in the US? Were it not for the laws of this land, I would have killed you, western BNHA fandom), DvK2...
Katsuki's emotions are big. They are probably bigger than he is, honestly. Deku's are, too, and so are several other characters, but that doesn't negate my statement.
I'm of the opinion that Katsuki throughout most of the manga, though not so much after these most recent (404 and up) chapters, is actually quite shy about anything that isn't kicking someone's ass or showing off an ability he knows he can perform well. So, sure, he can perform when ass-kicking just fine, but during interviews or simple conversations with his classmates, he clams up and/or just acts like a total bullshitter delinquent as a cover. He's a sensitive little baby and needed to be treated as such just as much as he needed to be told he could be a little shit sometimes and get his ass beat into the dirt! Both were required!

‘Anime Japan’ March 2023: Attack On Titan Stage Event

Preamble
Every March in Tokyo, representatives of different anime studios and shops put up stalls at the Tokyo Big Site Exhibition Hall to advertise upcoming anime and related goods. ‘Anime Japan’ is also a locus for interviews with voice actors. This year, Kaji Yuki (Eren), Ishikawa Yui (Mikasa), and Inoue Marina (Armin) went to promote Part 3 of The Final Season.
I couldn’t pass up the chance to go. However, there is limited space at the Stage Events, and the success of an application is determined by lottery. I applied for five events and got rejected from four – but as fate would have it, I got the ticket for SNK! I was as excited as Armin at the ocean. I of course went in my Survey Corps cloak.
Two caveats: photographs were not permitted, so none are provided. Also, my Japanese isn’t perfect, but I’m confident I got the gist of what they were saying.
The Event
The three seiyuu expressed sadness at the series coming to an end, and at how this would be their last time at Anime Japan after ten years. They thanked the presenter for having been their ‘MC’ for all this time.
On the projector, a scene from the last episode relevant to each of their characters was played. First up was Armin and his love confession to Annie on the ship (no pun intended). Inoue expressed interest in the complex feelings between them, and is curious to see where it goes because, unlike the other two, she hasn’t read the ending yet.

Next was Mikasa, who was given the redux of her “See you later, Eren” scene from the start of the series. Ishikawa was really excited for everyone to understand the meaning of those words, but managed to hold herself back from spoiling us.

Finally we had Eren with his breakdown in front of Ramzi. Kaji referred to this scene as Eren expressing his honne. In Japanese culture it is often said that people have a public face, tatemae, and a private face, honne. This is very true of Eren. Kaji commented that, although Eren is acting like a scary titan, this scene shows us he is human at heart after all.

Kaji found it very difficult to talk about the scene further without spoiling anything, but what he did say was very interesting. He expressed his inner conflict over Eren’s actions: acknowledging their awfulness, but understanding the desire to protect the people close to you. Having been with the character for such a long time now, he told us that, ultimately, he wants to be his ally. This was immediately followed up with a pained expression and the rider that “it’s complicated”.
I was really impressed by how deeply Kaji understands Eren. It’s exactly what you’d want from a lead actor, to have such a connection with their character. Interestingly, the word he used for ‘ally’, 味方 (mikata), is the same one Historia uses when she rescues Eren.

After this, the presenter mentioned perhaps the biggest event from the last episode: Hange’s death. Kaji reflected that, although it’s tragic, Hange must be happy to be with their senpai again.
Then came various announcements of events for the SNK anime’s 10th anniversary. You can find all these on the anime’s Twitter page. The merchandise collab with the Gudetama ‘Lazy Egg’ character drew a laugh from everyone.

Another landmark was SNK Radio’s 100th episode. Kaji was fiercely proud of this. He gave a booming YOROSHIKU ONEGAISHIMASU and an inordinately deep bow when he asked us to tune in.
A video compiling key moments from across all four seasons was then played on the projector. Inoue was conflicted, wanting to go “Woah!” on the one hand, but also “Nooo” because it’s ending. Ishikawa agreed there was a certain painful feeling.
The actors will be giving their last interview for the series at K Arena, Yokohama in 2024. Like Inoue, Kaji said he can’t look forward to it because he doesn’t want everything to end – but that he is excited nevertheless. There was a cute moment when a baby started crying and Kaji joked around with a dad in the crowd.
For the finale, the audience were instructed to stand and give a Survey Corps salute on Kaji’s SHINZO WO SASAGEYO, which filled the hall without the aid of a microphone. Ishikawa smiled and waved in my general direction while she left, so I can die content.
The Red Stage, where this interview took place, had no room for ticketless bystanders, so I really was lucky to get in. At the Blue Stage, I was able to peek over the stanchions to watch the BokuYaba and Tokyo Revengers interviews. I didn’t take notes on these, but I can sum up what I remember if anyone’s interested.

the thing about bakugou “getting the moral of the story before anyone else” — it got me thinking about how he actually performs in battle. i feel like over the course of the series you see him go from “violently efficient” to “ruthlessly efficient” if that makes sense. i.e. the joint training arc where 1A and 1B are in teams vs each other and he leads his team to victory super efficiently. its not a long battle where everyone gets hurt along the way, he just makes sure they contain their opponents as quickly as possible — maybe its a small thing to pick apart? but i just couldn’t help but notice how it seems to tie in. he might be “cutthroat” and standoffish but his approach to hero-related conflict actually results in as little violence as possible and i think its neat to pay attention to that shift
It's about battle strategy and combat skill as much as it is about anything else. Anyone who says "friendship and teamwork are all that matter" is being naive. It's about the whole package, and Katsuki figures out what he's missing technically when he's a little kid (but he decides it's too painful to face that so he ignores it). And a lot of his attitude early on is meant to be a wall that keeps him from having to face his weaknesses until he can't go on without addressing them.
I've also been thinking about this a bit lately: I think a lot of people who dislike Katsuki aren't familiar with a particular set of character tropes at play with him. He's both the "bully" starting out AND the "delinquent," which seem to go hand-in-hand, but the bully trope goes away pretty quickly while the delinquent trope sticks around as his conscious persona for a long time. If you aren't aware these are technically separate tropes, it's easy to conflate them. So when Katsuki continues his delinquent facade (because he barely actually follows through on any of it), plenty of people probably still see that as him being a bully when he's actually not. It's all about that tatemae and honne shit again.

SaShiSu: Honne-tatemae (PART 1)
What is "tatemae" and "honne"? What role do they play with SaShiSu? I'd like to explore these ideas these series of posts.
Now, a few clarifications:
This is not a serious university level research study. Please do not expect equally serious citations.
Aside from the "tatemae" and "honne" definitions plus their significant role in Japanese society, the rest of non-canon/official stuff are purely my opinion. So, if you disagree, it's alright.
Okay, cool? Cool.
TATEMAE & HONNE: A GLIMPSE

Now, back to "tatemae" and "honne". Simply put:
Tatemae = Facade -> The "face" shown to remain in harmony with society Honne = True feelings -> The real face hidden away from society
"Tatemae" is the "masked self" used to get by and avoid causing trouble to others. "Honne" is the "true self" suppressed deep inside in exchange of being accepted by others easily.
These concepts are vital when living in Japan. It's practically a communal obligation because being in harmony with society is everything there.
"Tatemae" is practiced by everyone EVEN among people with very close relationships because it has to be ensured first that said connection is extremely strong and trusting. The people involved have to become so in tuned with one another that they can read between the lines whenever they interact. So, when people starts showing their "honne", they would just get it without fuss.
SaShiSu: The Disaster Trio

So, what does "tatemae" and "honne" had to do with SaShiSu? Frankly, I think it is what led to their disastrous end which I talked about a bit in the past. This is kind of an expansion of it.
I'll establish first how I think their honne-tatemae works first. Starting with simplest one:
Satoru

Satoru has no tatemae to speak of at the beginning. He is crass and rude. He has no filter whatsoever. He shows 100% maximum no chill honne.
If he says "We're strong together" to Suguru, he meant it 100%.
If he displays comfort drawing confidence from Shoko, it is exactly just that. No double meanings or ulterior motives.
Satoru functions in JJK's world with just his honne and a lot of people around him dislikes it - even pre-Toji Suguru admonished him for it.
However, during the Star Plasma Vessel mission, he started to have a semblance of tatemae for Riko's sake. Satoru wanted her to live her last days worry free, so never once did he display any weakness in front of her and Kuroi. The only one privy to that was Suguru.
Even after being stabbed, Satoru kept his bravado: "[I'm strong]. It's fine. [Everything will be okay]." He also used it on Suguru so he'd be dissuaded from backing him up and just focus on helping Riko escape. In a way, this was the foundation of the tatemae Satoru would display for the rest of his life.
However, this tatemae is not a traditional one. It is not put up to maintain societal harmony (aka to please the conservative higher-ups). Satoru put it up as a reassurance for the people that matter to him. He is not doing it to make society happy. It was for the sake of the people he values most.
Another complication is Satoru's tatemae and honne are practically blurred together. He only had to "save face" twice:
The aforementioned reassurance when Toji stabbed him
The happy face he had for his students after he killed Suguru
So, distinguishing Satoru's tatemae from his honne is a nightmare for everyone because his facade is never really tested much. They never saw it crack to help them tell the difference. This means that people just assumes that Satoru is using tatemae all the time to be safe - that he has ulterior motives in everything ranging from annoying to threatening.
In truth tho, Satoru is being real for real. In his perspective, he rarely has to use tatemae. So, technically he is still functioning with no chill honne. Just 99.9% and not the previous 100%. It's not much difference from when he was in school but different enough.
'Satoru shows "honne" 99% of the time. People don't believe it and thinks he is showing "tatemae" instead. Satoru has yet to catch on the misunderstanding of his image.'
Up next! The unexpected disaster of the trio.
Shoko

If Satoru is honne menace, Shoko is the tatemae nightmare. We never see beyond the surface with her.
Details about Shoko are minimal. A simple answer to that could be that Gege didn't care. But considering his female characters had substantially fleshed out backgrounds (narrative utilization of their characters are a different topic), I think a case can be made that Shoko's little to no display of PoV is intentional - that she always held her true thoughts and feelings very close to her heart and it takes a miracle or the end of the world to even glimpse them.
To put it simply, Shoko is the exact opposite of Satoru. Her tatemae is ironclad 21/7 and her honne is so shrouded that it fools people into thinking that it's actually her tatemae.
Her unflappable personality and neutral stance made her look cool, calm, and collected albeit detached. It is a great facade for her job as their resident doctor & forensics. But it is terrible for her relationships because everyone thinks that is all there is to her and leave her alone to it.
'Shoko shows "tatemae" nearly all the time. Compounded by the fact that she is rarely seen off-work and without her poker face, people assume she is always like that. No one tries to understand her "honne" because they believe she is already showing "honne". She has yet to show skills in refuting the wrong perception.'
Lastly, this fucker who I absolutely love but really really needs help. The poster boy of honne-tatemae:
Suguru

Satoru and Shoko are two awful cases of honne and tatemae on steroids. Suguru is the one who uses these concepts very well much to his advantage and detriment.
I think it was mentioned before that, officially, it is actually Suguru who is much more popular than Satoru. It is not hard to see why in a Japanese society.
Suguru is the epitome of an ideal man in Japan from his looks down to his behavior: tall, dark, handsome, and very appropriately polite in public but refreshingly fun in private.
Suguru fits the Japanese ideal especially for that last factor. He knows how to properly show tatemae and honne. In front of authorities and strangers, he is the prim and proper stand-up guy aka "dutiful model sorcerer". However, among friends, he is as much of a nasty gremlin as Satoru albeit more agreeable. The contrast makes him charismatic which is a great boon for his work and relationships.
At the same time, since everyone knows his tatemae, he has basically boxed himself in a particular role publicly. This was not a hardship at first for Suguru because his facade is in line with his true feelings. It just all fell apart post-Toji because the experience transformed his honne into something so antithetical to his tatemae.
Suguru grappled with that incompatibility for more than a year until eventually, he came to a decision to discard his tatemae of "dutiful model sorcerer" by becoming a mass killing curse user.
Does this mean Suguru is now living like pre-Toji Satoru - just 100% maximum no chill honne? No. Absolutely not.
In fact, Suguru displayed his honne-tatemae on a much grander scale instead.
Tatemae = Ordinary Facade World of Non-Sorcerers = A helpful monk Honne = Cursed True World of Sorcerers = A genocidal curse user.
Even on a micro-level within his new family, Suguru also maintains another layer of honne-tatemae which seems to be only Satoru, Shoko (maybe), Nanako, and Mimiko were privy to.
Tatemae = Jujutsu sorcerers, especially those from school like Satoru, are his bitter enemies. Honne = He actually has no hard feelings against jujutsu sorcerers and their enmity is just simply a difference of mindset.
'Suguru is a master class of how "tatemae" and "honne" works. Unlike Shoko, he is in full control of how he presents himself. Unlike Satoru, he is also in full control of how *most people perceive him.'
*I say "most people" here because Suguru failed to control how Satoru and Shoko view him. He was absolutely delusional at thinking he succeeded at it. What a dumbass. I'll explore it next time in PART 2. This post is already long as it is. I'll just leave it as PART 1.

A wholly genderbent death note?
I must admit ,anon -I took my time with this, because the scope of that is a little intimidating. Also Eclipse has been busy with work and Baldur's Gate 3, and hasn't had much energy to brainstorm. Thank you for your patience. 
To start with, the gender politics of this world are very different, as a lot of people in important positions have become female.
 Higuchi, is head of the technological development of the Yotsuba group at age 32, in 2004. He's canonically obsessed with gaining social status, power, and wealth, and is implied to not be as competent as his colleague's. If it were just him swapping genders that would carry unfortunate implications, but the rest of the group heads were male,  are also gender swapped, so now she's power climbing ambitious hate-sink, I guess. Just like before. 
Would Demegawa still be a sensationalist media director of a TV station in a gender swap? Maybe not if it was just him being swapped. That story would probably her being a lacky who made it higher (quite possibly to Kira Deaths in the industry) who is running the station in part two, someone who reached too high and fell to Kira like all others. 
The director of the FBI Stev(i)e Mason, is female, and so is most of the American FBI, with Misora standing out. Actually, in this AU would Penber have still told her fiance to stay in the kitchen and quit his job in order to marry her? Is she still reluctant to marry him? If so, that certainly carries implications about gender roles in this world.
But let's say things are different and Penber is less of a sexist jerk, and Misora had to tie up some loose ends on a previous job, before Rae dies. Misora is still one of the bigger threats to Light in series, and had to be taken down quickly for the story to work. It would certainly up the stakes if that coincidence was taken out, but keeping them there and playing multi person chess would be a lot harder.
The SPK of America, and the police of Japan are now full of ladies. It turns Lady Lights' desire from controversial to expected again.
On the flipside, crime is also made up of ladies, such as Mello's Mafia, Misa's stalker, and independents such as Otoharada.
It's starting to feel kind of like Barbieland, as there is a noticeably higher number of named male characters then Female in the universe of Death Note. Like really, off the top of my head I can think of 13 named female characters in death note, and I'm including characters like Misa's friend Yoshi.
In this gender swapped Death Note, by 2009, there is something that hasn't happened in reality in the states. There is a Madame President, and Vice president. Mrs Roger is so done with Watari, she never wanted to spend this much time around children and here she is running an orphanage filled with them. I'm going to assume Linda is still into art.
In a world where Watari was the only one gender swapped,  I would wonder if Watari's past as an inventor was a bit like L being the world famous detective that no one sees. I also wonder about her backstory having her well trained in espionage, and marksmanship. Watari was born in 1933 (anime), which is in the range of world war 2, but would make her a young child when it started and ended. Does this mean that in the Death Note universe World War 2 lasted longer, or did England get up to orphan spy training programs, that later inspired Watari to create orphan detective programs. Wait, is this becoming a kind of crossover with Gallagher girls? After all, just because Watari founded a school in England, didn't mean she was from there. Also transfers were a thing. Or could have been. That's fun. 
I'd say Watari would have to be a lot louder to get such a rep as L's handler. After all, stupid people still exist even when you have a rep. I wonder if she used disguise to help? Of course, thats in a solo, and this is about everyone.
Aiber and Wedy
Wedy is L's profesional cat burglar and survalance expert. In story she mostly looks cool, installs some bugs to evesdrop, and rides a motorcycle. 
Aiber gets more to characterize himself and stand out. Aiber is L's professional con-man, and social infiltrator, said to be able to blend in with varied types of social groups. L has enough evidence to land Aiber in lifetime prison, and has saved Aiber's life a couple of times. Its also said (in how to read) that he is multilingual, often assumes fake identidies, and gets his biggest thrills from swindling and living on the edge. Basically. He sounds a bit like a male Black Widow, with less combat training, and tramatic backstory… presumably. Hmmm, also less brainwashing
L trusts Aiber enough to use one of the other detective names he stole, and play the roll of Eraldo Coil. I can't say if Aiber is playing the roll of L playing Coil, or original coil. He also, has a family, and heavily dislikes guns.
For the most part, they are pretty typecast by their character designs  if it were a story about any of them individually, there's more space for extrapolation, but in large groups it becomes a norm. Female Aiber could be interesting to explore as an individual. Actually, so could male. Same with Watari, or any of them really, by any writer who decides to get really invested in it.
Still, in fanwork, you have to consider the conservation of the ship of Theseus. At what point in replacing the parts do you have a new ship? Is it when the first nail is replaced? The fifth? The planks? The entire boat? Is it still the same boat after all that change? Likewise, you can never be the same person you were at eleven, or even two years ago. You have grown, your body has changed old cells out for new ones, and most importantly you have had experiences that filter your thoughts into directions that filter your perceptions.
At what point in changing a character do they become an OC committing identity fraud? What core traits are important to keeping a character”in character”, even when you change the experiences that filter their perception of the world? What changes with gender, and what stays the same? 
Gender is a big factor in the face we present to the world. It has expectations with it. And the expectations of gender in Japanese culture are different then the ones in the west. Japanese culture is collectivist, and group cohesion is placed higher than the west's individual needs. There is also a shame culture in the east, in contrast to the west's guilt culture. Confucius vs Christian values. There are benefits and pitfalls to both worldviews. 
It's not something anyone would know their first time watching eastern media, but with learning more about these cultural aspects, one can look back to characters they didn't previously understand the motives of in a new light.
Time is also a factor. The culture and expectations adults today grew up with, are different from the ones they would have experienced 20 years ago, for all that there have been things that stayed the same? 
I should also get into Honne and Tatemae. Tatemae is whats expected by society and required according to one's position and circumstances. The Honne is one's true feelings and desires, which may be contrary to society's expectations and is often kept hidden except with one's closest friends. 
It ties in with Japanese Confucianism Beliefs, of human centered virtues for harmonious and peaceful society. Essentially, in Japanese culture Public failure and disapproval of others are seen as a source of shame and reduced social standing, so direct confrontation is something they wish to avoid. The traditional social norm then is to minimize discord, not doing so might be seen as insulting or aggressive.
I feel a good example can be seen in this quote from this article.
“A Belgian friend of mine once kindly told a Japanese librarian that the English travel guides had been misplaced in the “History” section. The woman immediately started apologizing almost hysterically, bowing, hiding her face in her hands and looking so distressed that my Belgium friend started apologizing frantically as well, and left as fast as she could after putting the books back where they belonged. A Japanese student, had he or she noticed the mistake, would probably have took it upon himself or herself to silently put the books back into the right place, and nobody but a foreigner would have casually and publicly proclaimed something was wrong, thus unintentionally shaming the librarian and embarrassing themselves in the process.”
Not to say that we don't have social masks as well in the west. We do. But because its not talked about to keep social cohesion, you often don't realize you have been angering someone to the point hurt and resentment and grudges towards you has built up until things escalate.
Politeness is something that keeps society together. We have scripts for interacting with others to keep things even keel. We have rules that we all follow to more or less get along with other people. This is true of any lasting society. 
We all expect other people to follow the rules, and make exceptions for those we consider close to us.
Perhaps that paints Light's killing of criminals with more context. These people did not follow the rules for harmonious society.  Light told Rem to find someone selfish and cruel enough to be willing to use the Death Note, while being dumb enough to not spread out his corporate killings. She found Higuchi. Nobody likes him. His collages instantly pin him as Kira. He's a victim no one would have any qualms about dying if it were not for the Kira case.
Lights dream for the Millennium Kingdom-I mean- new world, consist of kind hearted people he deems fit to live in it. He claims that once the world as a whole changes people will become kinder as a whole. He starts with criminals, then plans to move to immoral people, and harassers, and has later plans to kill people who refuse to contribute to the good of society, or lazy people as he put them. I have to wonder whether Light living through “The Lost Decade” had any influence on his thoughts here?
He's basing who should live in the world he wishes to build on those who can follow the rules (both said and unsaid) of society he knows. And he is using the rules of Japanese Justice to enforce them.
The Phoenix Wright games are not a bad place to start understanding Japanese Justice. Japan has a 99.8% conviction rate in cases that go to trial. For all we make jokes about the confetti that comes down when Pheonix wins a case, with those numbers, winning a case as a Defense Attorney is rare, and worthy of celebration. 
While no real trial that I am aware of has needed to cross examine a parrot, Japan's “hostage justice” means a long uphill battle for an acquittal. 
On Japanese Justice
Japan also practices Capitol Punishment and the death penalty.
To Light, narcissist, son of a police officer, and good Japanese student, this is probably what everyone is secretly wanting but could never do. But he can. And will do it for them. And if not, well they will come around when they see how much better it is, his way. He just needs time to change the world.
But back to a point, of sorts, Eclipse and I try to keep a balance of sorts between what we know of Japanese culture, and fun headcanons. We certainly go into cracky territory (no regrets about Cat Misa here), but I also don't see a lot of reasons that most of the character traits with the other characters need to change with Gender, when gender is not the only factor that make up their persona. What we see of most of the other characters are what are culturally or socially expected of them. We don't see their Honne, just their Tatemae. 
I'm going to end this with another Lady Virgilia video about Persona 5, this one about Socialcultural context. P5 is very on the nose apt with its gameplay mechanic about removing their mask to send their will of rebellion out to fight.

I remembered the Japanese drama idea...
So there are stereotypical Japanese personality types... Tsundere, cold exterior, but warm interior.
yandere cute until you get too close to them.
kuudere cold, serious, but soft and sweet.
yangire seem friendly and nice, and cute, but change to aggressive later.
dandere rarely speaks and is shy.
If those are the stereotypical extreme Japanese personality types, the question is can the character types be with their polar opposites?
For example, a tsundere, be paired with someone that seems cute and fluffy, maybe even lolita type, but then that person turns out to be cold when gotten close to? Usually Tsundere are men and the pairing is with someone genki female, right? But if the genki kawaii person suddenly flips to cold, it would be really entertaining and funny. And you can flip the sexes here. (Lolita genki kawaii man suddenly turning cold? lol And a tsundere, bossy woman suddenly turning timid?) I think actors would like the challenge of playing against the usual gender types and the sudden switch.
I think it would be funny to see them switch places. Just as the Tsundere is getting warm and fuzzy, their partner is getting to be cold out of embarrassment, fear of commitment/abandonment, etc. And there is a ton one can do to explain why (such as psychological attachment theory), etc and play it for gags and voice overs.
Since Japan tends to be really good at deep diving into characters and motivations, it might be really good to get into that.
Even funnier would be maybe yandere paired with a yangire? Descent into total chaos. Honestly, seeing this as a horror/mystery series would be fantastic. Romance between the protags going off the rails in weird ways brought to the tonal extremes with manic laughter, etc. Making it convincing would be fun. Maybe they could solve stalking and kidnapping cases together while they slowly go off the rails as they get closer romantically, but the argument for their INTENSE love of each other still somehow makes sense?
And then for the deredere, pair them with someone loud, outspoken who often has a foot in their mouth so tends to overspeak and is often embarrassed, but too awkward to shut up.
kuudere also paired with their polar opposite. Someone who is not monotone and has a slapstick sense of humor and passionate about everything and emotional about everything.
I'm aware all of this originally plays with tatemae (建前) v. honne (本音), but sometimes people put on awkward loud masks to mask quieter feelings and failings, so it might be a good way to delve into the psychology of people and characters. Plus you can coin the terms? And I know Japan really likes doing this kind of thing. With a touch of humor, but also empathy and understanding, it could also be oddly heartwarming too. Maybe the second layer isn't their honne... and how they connect to each other has a deeper level?
Can they work with their differences of personality and find common ground?
I love a good rom com, but also descent into total chaos. Ah, the two leads being weirdly Yandere and Yangire in a mystery/horror would be tons of fun to watch.

jeongguk unlocked the front door with the personal key attached to his car keys and his desk-locker key from work. his head coming in contact with the material of the door briefly while his hands manoeuvred the lock to finally open the door as he let out a soft sigh.
he hates summers, it is brutal. while the world is enjoying summer breaks, he is working double shifts due to the sheer number of officers submitting requests for vacations.
bam greeted his owner at the doorway, sniffing jeongguk's pant legs while his tail wagged. he can always smell the faint traces of the police labrador retriever dog from his owner's work clothes.
"there's my good boy," a smile appeared on jeongguk's otherwise tired face as he scratched bam's head affectionately.

the detective made his way inside the house, with bam on his tail, taking off his jacket and discarding it on the kitchen countertop. he was expecting to see you in the kitchen, given you usually are arranging dinner at this time. finding the space empty, he meant to walk away to the bedroom but noticed two boxes of chocolate wrapped in a ribbon. they looked like they were about to melt so jeongguk stored them in the refrigerator before finally making his way to the bedroom.

taking off his department badge, he kept it away on the nightstand but owing to his carelessness, the badge fell to the floor in the narrow space between the bed and the nightstand. he would have picked it up but his mind was preoccupied with the sound of the shower running. barely unbuttoning his shirt, jeongguk pushed open the bathroom door with a soft nudge of his feet.
there you were, taking a cold shower to fight the summer. you were facing the shower, just letting it wash away the heat while some pop song blasted through your mobile that you had propped somehow to prevent it from touching the water.
jeongguk walked in through the crack in the shower curtains with his work trousers still on, "hey baby," his hands slowly wrapped around your waist, closing in a wrap with one hand on top of the other right above your belly button.
you wringed the water from your hair, which trailed down jeongguk's chest, before turning to him, "hi," a lump in your throat from the inactivity. it has been way too hot these days and you refuse to go out anywhere, only ever stepping out if it is an utmost necessity.

earlier in the afternoon you noticed that bam's dog food had finished so you made a trip to the local supermarket with bam. you love shopping with him, because although he is a ray of sunshine but a doberman still scares the shit out of people so the annoying salesmen stationed at almost every other aisle these days with their free samples never approach you; an all-in-all peaceful shopping trip.
while you were checking out the items, at the cashier counter there were boxes of chocolates stacked with the tag 'buy 1 get 1!'. you cannot recall seeing your husband eating sugary food as much, he mostly eats meals at home and you do not really keep track of what he eats while he is at work. you would not necessarily call him a dessert person. so the debate went on for a while before you finally got one box and checked it out too. you are not sure why you bought them but you just wanted to get your husband some chocolates? what is so wrong with it? why can't you just get your husband some chocolates? :/
"you are taking an early shower today," your husband mentioned from behind you, his chin coming to rest on your shoulder, letting the shower water run over him.
"gguk, it's 1am," you mumbled, your hands coming down to rest atop his. unspoken, your bodies started swaying slightly to the tune of the song blasting through your phone as a slow song came on the shuffle.
for a brief moment he stopped moving but then continued the motion, "right. i am sorry, it's been so tiring these days. i've lost track of time. did you have dinner?"
"no." you replied with bated breath, a part of you was waiting for him to initiate something. i mean given his past nature, isn't it a given that this is going to lead to sex?
but your husband lives to surprise you. his hands never unclasped from your waist, but instead stayed firmly in place.
"you don't need to wait for me if i'm late," his face nuzzled in the crook of your neck, inhaling the scent of your body wash.
"it's not fun eating alone," you finally released the tension, letting your figure slump back on his.
"mhm," humming, jeongguk closed his eyes.
"hey hey hey," your sprinkled some water on his face watching him scrunch his nose up which made you chuckle, "i know you are going to fall asleep. let's go eat."
"noooo," there was a whiny tone in his voice, as he only tightened his grip when you tried to break free.
"you need to eat, don't you have duty in the morning?"
"i am going to set fire to that precinct, every time i finish some paperwork, another pile of files just get dumped on my desk."
"wow, any other pyromaniac tendencies that i should know of?"
"please let's just stay like this, just for a while," jeongguk turned you around to face him this time, to stare into your eyes as intently as he had on your wedding day while reciting his vows.
"you'll catch a cold, sick gguk is a whiny little complaining brat," you chuckled, wrapping your arms around his neck, your bare chest coming in contact with his.
"i don't care," he kept swaying with you, his hold around you comforting as his arms enveloped you whole like a warm shawl.
"we shouldn't waste water," you suggested once more.
"i don't care," he reiterated again. there was not a single ounce of annoyance in his voice, he seemed at peace with his face nuzzling into your neck again.
a few moments passed before you reached your hand behind your back to turn the knob off, "i got you chocolates."
"huh? why?" again, he was not annoyed, just genuinely surprised.
"what do you mean why? i can't get my husband some chocolates?!" you pulled away from the embrace, your hands propped on his chest, the vein in your forehead pulsing; ready to throw hands.
"whoa whoa whoa, baby, calm down."
"no tell me why! why can't i just get you chocolates? what's so wrong in that?" you glared daggers at him.
"you..." jeongguk let a soft chuckle, "you are so tiny and cute."
"i got you chocolates and you are going to eat them."
"won't say i'm much fond of them but i guess it won't hurt to try."
"yes, you're going to eat them and smile and say 'thank you my dear wife, you're the best. what would i possibly do without you'"
"is that so?"
"yes and then-"
he cut you off this time, "and then i will return the favour and maybe eat you out for the dessert after dessert."
you hit his chest laughing before finally breaking free of the embrace this time, "wash up, i will get dinner ready."

"where are the chocolates?" you asked as you walked into the bedroom after warming up the dinner.
jeongguk was sprawled across the bed, his eyelids drooping down with sleep, the water from his semi-wet hair being soaked by the pillow cover, "i put them in the fridge," he yawned mid-sentence.
"well, the food's ready. let's go."
"you take out the chocolates and i will be there."
humming, you walked out to the kitchen and opened the fridge door but did not find the box anywhere. rummaging around the vegetables tray and behind the other tupperware boxes, you opened the freezer door just to be sure and lo and behold, he had put it in the freezer over the ice tray and now the packet was frozen and sticking to the ice tray.
"jeon jeongguk!" you speed-walked to the bedroom only to find him fast asleep, soft snores filling the silence in the room.

next morning:
pressing on the volume up button, you quieted down the alarm blaring like a war horn on a beautiful sunday morning at 05:00. your husband gets early day offs on sundays but he has to clock into work early too.
putting on a headband to keep your hair away from the face, you walked to the washroom by muscle memory as your eyes were half-lidded from sleep. you reckoned if you had fallen asleep again, you might not be able to wake up on time so you pushed yourself off the bed. you squeezed the toothpaste tube on the bristles of your toothbrush, unsure if it indeed was the toothpaste or your facewash, you started brushing. your rhythm faltered every now and then as you kept falling asleep doing the mundane routine.
most mornings you wake up about half an hour before jeongguk has to leave for work. he is not a picky eater and eats whatever you put on a plate in front of him. actually, most mornings he is done making sandwiches by the time you wake up to make him something. you both then enjoy the sandwich he made as you see him off to work.
since he went to sleep last night on an empty stomach (and so did you, missy), you wanted to make him a heavy breakfast, something more than just two pieces of bread.
halfway through, you heard your alarm again and your eyes shot open. you must have snoozed your alarm instead of dismissing it and five minutes later it blared again. your brain must have lagged from the sleep because by the time you finally decided that 'oh hey i should turn off the alarm before jeongguk wakes up,' jeongguk already had woken up and appeared behind you.
"morning," he mumbled before walking inside to use the toilet.
you finally finished washing up and pat dry your face with the towel by the time your husband walked out, his eyes all scrunched up, his hand scratching an itch on his belly.
"why are you up so early?"
"to make breakfast for you," you said walking into the bedroom.
"i don't leave for like more than two hours, let's go back to sleep."
"i know," you hummed, fixing your hair.
before he could protest further and albeit successfully convince you to come back to bed, you walked to the kitchen and got the breakfast started.

you served two bowls of naengmyeon and galbitang before returning to the cooking station to finish the last dish which you mean to pack for his lunch at work.
by the time you turned the stove off after giving it a last stir, the bibimbap was perfectly cooked. still standing there meaning to clean up, you felt jeongguk sneaking up behind you, hugging you close. this movement and position are slowly feeling so familiar to you; you can get used to this.
"who is going to eat all this?" he asked softly, placing soft kisses along the side of your neckline.
"you are," you asserted, wiping away the spills from the stovetop.
"but then what about my dessert?"
"the chocolates?"
"no, you."
your head had a whiplash with the way you turned to him.
"what? you thought i was rambling last night? i remember everything i say, baby."
"you have to go to work," shrugging, you casually mentioned the time restraint.
"it's worth to be late 'cause of that."
"get ready," elbowing him in the belly, you tried to pus him away but jeongguk was unrelenting today.
his lips were already on your soft spot, his tongue darting out to allow soft kittenish licks — you held your place but what definitely pushed you over the edge was his hand, wrapped around your lower stomach, slowly creeping down, his palm taking shape to sculpt your mound. the moment his hand came in touch with the sensitive bundle of nerves down there, your spine bent over — almost in routinely motion to such ministrations — giving way for your ass to attach snuggly and poke into his crotch area.

minjun turned after swallowing the last spoonful of the bibimbap, "oh mrs jeon, thank you so much for the breakfast. it's great!"
you gave him a close-lipped smile, blinking a few too many times before turning to your husband who took a visible gulp.
after the crowd in front of your dispersed you slammed the badge down on his table and meant to walk away, but jeongguk got a hold of your wrist.
"look i saved the chocolates for myself."
"ahha? you mean the one that i see in yoona's hand?"
jeongguk stared down at his desk in panic, his eyes searching for the box of chocolates that he had kept aside to eat later, "those sneaky bastards."
"i am never cooking for you again, jeon jeongguk."

Alright, now onto one of the best creations in human history.
MOB PSYCHO 100!
I am incredibly excited to cover this anime, so I'm going to try to talk about it per episode and per theme so that I don't start rambling, and that it's easier for you guys to read.

Mob as autistic representation: Even if it wasn't ONE's intention, I thought that he did an amazing job with autistic representation. I myself am not autistic, by my diagnosed ASD friends who are also mp100 fans consider mob one of the best representations they've ever seen media. Mob struggles to maintain friendships, is often blunt, has difficulty initiating conversation, has an inability to understand tonal change and "read the room", has an underreaction to physical stimuli, and the 100% alluding to a 'meltdown' are all things that people have verifiably cited as behavior which coincides with many people with ASD (disclaimer: ASD is a spectrum- many people have varied behaviors to different degrees). I was fond of this representation because I felt like people around mob acknowledged that he was different, accepted him, made some accommodations for him, but otherwise his uniqueness was not a focal point of the comic. It was actually never even outright stated that he was autistic. Nowadays, many characters with disabilities are created with the intention of displaying and being an activist piece for said disability, and while I understand that that's valid, it's very rare to see a character that is really accepted within the story without being singled out due to said disability. Some may also consider Tome an autistic representation as well, because of her affinity/special interest for aliens that followers her throughout the series, where she stops at nothing, even at the behest of her friends (and being seen as weird), to communicate with them. That being said...
100%: I said earlier that mob's 100% mode can be seen as an allegory to an autistic meltdown, but I also think that it can be applied further than that. People nowadays are so hellbent on projecting a certain image of themselves onto society that they have to conform to strict, rigid societal rules while simultaneously acting like it comes naturally to them. It's tiring, stressful, and uncomfortable. Mob can also be a representation of the average person who is forced to deal with discomfort while simultaneously accepting it with a smile. We all have those days where we hit 100%, be real! I believe that this is a critique on society because... well....... we need to learn to be honest with our own emotions, and be more graceful of other's as well. TERU V MOB:

Honne/Tatemae: What was that fight all about? Teru is desperate and power hungry- when he hears that somebody even nearly as strong as him exists, he knows he has to challenge him, even when that person doesn't even want to fight! This fight was a beautiful showcase of Teru's character arc, which happened in just under 10 minutes! Teru is in need of social approval, making his powers (uniqueness) his entire personality. After the fight, Teru had virtually nothing left (seriously, his clothes, his hair, his strength, and his social status were all gone!), but he allowed his defeat to change him positively, realizing that he had come to terms with not being special.
Most characters in this series have their own form of honne/tatemae (the face they show to society versus how they truly feel). Mob, Ritsu, student council president, Inuyama, and Reigen, are all deeply flawed and use masks to hide their discomfort. ONE uses this technique for nearly every character arc, forcing us to realize that we can only run with our 'masks' for so long. Tome is actually the only character that I can think of that doesn't follow this Honne/Tatemae format. She is unapologetically herself, even when she is put down or made fun of. In the end, after all the characters go through their own special transformations... what happens to Tome? She meets fucking aliens. And she deserves to.
You can all change:
People changing is another massive theme from the Teru arc that I feel reflects a large portion of the show in general. Dimple, Boss, Reigen, Teru, Ritsu, and Toichiro, were all previously "bad guys" one way or another. Mob uses his power of pacifism and empathy to help each character with their problems instead of beating them down (but in Teru's case beating him up was helping him). This shows you that you can flip the script on your tatemae and live your unapologetically true self while also self reflecting and improving.

This post includes a discussion of Japanese delinquents and bosozoku, a brief and simplified history of the relationship of Japanese hypermasculinity and military/naval power, a brief discussion of kouha and nanshoku, and a brief general analysis of how Kirishima's early-series insecurities reflect those of an “emasculated” and outdated Japan in relation to Mina’s “effeminate” Japan of today. It also compares Kirishima and Mina’s history and character growth to Katsuki and Izuku’s.
