As I continue adding to my prehistoric sleeve, take a look at the most recent addition to my arm – a marine-dwelling ammonite! This group of extinct mollusks died out about 66 million years ago, having lived during the dinosaurs’ heyday of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. They are also excellent index fossils, helping to link the rock layer in which a particular species is found to specific geologic time periods.
The name "ammonite" was inspired by the spiral shape of their shells, which resemble tightly coiled rams' horns. Pliny the Elder called them ammonis cornua ("horns of Ammon") because the Egyptian god Ammon was typically depicted wearing rams' horns. Fossilized ammonites show an enormous range in size, from the very small to the height of a human, but this one fits perfectly on my tricep! 🦑

As I continue to work on my prehistoric sleeve, have a look at the most recent addition to my arm – a fossilized raptor claw! Measuring just over 5 inches in length, this life-size depiction of the sickle-like talon of Deinonychus is truly a work of art.
Deinonychus was the model for the “raptor” dinosaurs of 1993’s Jurassic Park. While the name Velociraptor was chosen instead, they were actually a genus of dromaeosaur that was considerably smaller in size. Deinonychus measured about 8 feet or more in length and weighed in at 100–150 pounds, making it a fast, agile predator whose large brain enabled it to perform relatively complex movements during the hunt and chase. With its principal killing device now tattooed on my inner bicep, I can pay tribute to one of my all-time favorite dinosaurs whose name fittingly means “terrible claw.” 💪🏻
