28. Acrylic jewellery, especially brooches but also necklaces. Erstwilder and Tatty Devine in particular but I also have a few pieces by smaller makers. I love distinctive jewellery and it’s become a bit of a signature for me. My favourite thing is when I can be thematic (example: when I teach my sessions on Baudelaire as part of one of my courses I wear a brooch that features a cat lounging on a copy of his poetry collection Les Fleurs du Mal…)

38. Favourite song: I know I keep adding to the list but I genuinely find it hard to pick a single “favourite song right now”! So I’ll throw in “Vampire” by Olivia Rodrigo, which stopped me in its tracks with the extent to which it seemed to remind me of an ex… Sometimes the right song just turns up for the right moment.

W I N X for the letter prompt for Connor and Trent

Wingfic: When a person reaches 13, they grow wings as a reflection of their soul. For Conner, this is no problem; he's never been traumatized without getting help and he doesn't suffer from neglect or low self-esteem. And to show it off how good he has it, his wings are a glistening spectacle of brazen blood red with brown clustered highlights at his joints. Charm Bracelets

Charm bracelets have been worn as early as 400BC, due to religious requirements. These charms were often adorned by Persians and Babylonians. They were originally crafted from rock crystal and gems available to the location. The charms were made to resemble gods, humans, animals and were believed to protect against evil intent. This religious background was replaced with the fashion jewellery of the 1890’s, where Queen Victoria herself would wear a bracelet that held family portraits. Charm bracelets were also popular during the second war, where soldiers would send charms back home for their loved ones. This would continue till the 1950’s. Charm bracelets now often use designs to reflect zodiac signs and birthstones, as well as any interests of the wearer (look to Pandora’s Disney collection). Companies such as Pandora encourage their purchasing of charms as a means of collecting. Most bracelets now are made of stainless steel, the more expensive ones with gold. Charm bracelets are made to be versatile in size, so the number of charms you have is personal to you.

Meri Meri

Meri Meri provides luxury children's party supplies. They do however, provide charm bracelets. Each bracelet is curated using perspex material which is considered to be highly recyclable. I wanted to check the materials used in its creation to see what would align with my Penguin bracelet and the brands emphasis on sustainability. It would also mean a cheaper production rate for Penguin.

I also found Meri Meri's use of packaging interesting, inspiring ideas of a designated charm box to go alongside the readers collection.

Tatty Devine

Tatty Devine is a UK-based brand that creates fun statement jewelry. Similarly to Meri meri, they use laser cut perspex to create their designs. Coincidentally, they have a whole collection dedicated to Jane Austen named 'Chawton House'. The designs make up books, Austen's silhouette and a peacock feather that's associated with Pride and Prejudice.

The Vampires Wife

I thought to look to a high-end brand to also inspire my designs. The material used here is gold and obviously not what I aim for in my own design, where a cheaper material such as brass would be much more applicable and affordable for my Gen Z audience. Vampires Wife have used songs to inspire their charms which relates to my mission of representing visual motifs within books.

The Mercy Seat charm for example, is reflective of the song 'The Mercy Seat' by Nick Cave.

Ifeatuanya Chiejina Day 21

Observing the fossils of creatures and mammals at the Booth Museum of Natural History had me considering some questions about myself. What is at my core and allows me to stand up right? Is there flexibility in the essential supporting structure of my physical, emotional, and mental being? When I checked out the Tatty Devine exhibition at the Hove Museum on Saturday, there were a few configured birds and dinosaur necklaces. Seeing the skeletons at the Booth Museum today made me feel as though I was meant to go to both museums and notice the similarities in the works shown. The therapy session I had first thing in the morning was good. I talked about what I hope to expect from implementing form and arranging different activities (art and non-art) for my day to day schedule when I return home. Concluding the day with the online budgeting course was super helpful. I wish to have a lifestyle that makes me sincerely happy. When I do achieve it, I want to be able to maintain it.
