As a Christian, I am against government getting involved in charity (giving food to the hungry, housing to the homeless, and caring for the vulnerable) for one main reason: Jesus told us as individuals and as a church to take care of those people.

Yes, those people do need to be cared for. People need to be provided for. But the main reason why individuals and churches should be more involved than the government is because they can help meet as many needs of a person as possible while the government cannot.

What these people need is compassion and love and care and whatever they need to fulfill their physical needs. We are not machines to be oiled and made to run for as long as possible. We are human beings with souls and minds and bodies. Individuals and churches and non profits can better fulfill more needs than a government organization can.

And the more the government taxes us for charity, the less we have to give to charity for the betterment of the lives around us.
