Thank you for creating this account, you are so brave.
Prefacing: I used to tolerate TS and her music when I was a teen and couldn't really avoid it. Now I'm 25 and I find her abhorrent as a human being.
(I'm not American and where I am from TS was never a Big Hit, unless we're talking 14 year old girls that eventually grow out of liking her. It's not entirely for a good reason, my country's a bit too conservative-brainwashed to like a self-proclained "girl boss" on a gov. level.)
Something that I noticed about that cult-like worship of that frankly boring woman is that most of the interesting shit about her is 1. made up 2. not about her music and I DO NOT understand how this is even considered a singer anymore.
Like, for example. A bunch of liberal queers like her because they take her bland music and fill it with their own meanings. Her lyrics are so soulless and boring and generic you can apply them to anything. You don't have to go listen to staples of quuer music like what drag queens, or queer women, or Black gay men create: because their music is visceral, it speaks onto real lived through opression that not everyone can relate to. But not with fucking TS! She writes the most TYPICAL line and a bunch of people assign some secret gay meaning to it. The amount of times I saw TS added to playlists for queer content is ridiculous. Like she wouldn't be half as popular if her music was regarded as what it is: straight white girl soliloquy.
The shit about her love life? Should not be fucking mentioned in regards to her as an artist. She's SO fucking fake. She will complain that people only see her as some girl who dates all those guys but she's the one fucking monetizing her love story. I'd understand if she didnt TRY TO but she fucking does! She knows she's bland and boring and she relies on people liking gossip enough to listen to her crap.
ok quick note when you said “liberal queers” it should be “queer liberals”. im assuming english isnt your first language so your native tongue has different grammatical rules but in this instance you put “queer” in front of “liberal.” i just don’t want you to be accused of being homophobic or anything so this is a quick note for you
you said you were 25 and everyone who’s been following this blog has been 20+ demographic in particular. i think it must be because we’re old enough to remember her entire journey starting w the 2009 kanye west mtv incident up until this moment. her staunchest swifties on here were born after the fearless release 💀
hmmmm i always wonder what people imply by Taylor Swift being a global superstar. like she’s isn’t popular in the entire continent of Africa but that doesn’t count apparently? and as much as she is popular in south asia, so much news is framed with a western perspective and all westerners think whiteness is default, and this includes taylor swift. i wouldnt be surprised if theyre inflating her popularity abroad as they are here in the states. idk
and so true! she’s known for her controversies and dating drama. even her music is known not for its success but ppl questioning the legitimacy of her grammys she’s received for her music.
also your gaylor hate—i understand. im not straight and i think gaylors were lobotomized by taylor swift’s music like genuinely these bitches have bricks for brains. there are soooooooo many better queer musicians especially musicians of color who write songs of their literal shared experience of queer love, identity, etc. but here they go theorizing that taylor seift and karlie kloss secretly dated 😭 it reminds me of this convo i had with my friend about gay people admiring/looking up to straight and cis people and labelling them as “gay icons.” its so stupid and reductive and continues to marginalize actual queer artists.
also talking abt taylor swift playlists i will never forget when i found spotify’s bad bunny x taylor swift playlist inspired by their photo from the 2023 grammys 💀 it was so dumb
“straight white girl soliloquy” PERIOD ANON! i need to start making a list of what you guys say cause its fkn fire
taylor swift embedded her relationships so deeply into her brand and music that its inseparable from herself. she really does define herself by her partners and her fans do too, which is why they expected this to be a joe alwyn album.
she really is so unoriginal and unremarkable and that’s why her thing WORKS. because to swifties she’s like “another everyday girl like you and me :)” 🙄 whatever. yuck!

TAYLOR DERANGEMENT SYNDROME TAKES OVER INADEQUATES, INC.
TCINLA
JAN 31, 2024
The Bulwark’s entertainment editor, Sonny Bunch, gets it right about this week’s MAGA brainfart over Taylor Swift:
“Of all the dumb things the nascent nouveau right has tried over the years, attempting to turn conservatives against the NFL is by far the dumbest.
“It’s a sort of brainwashing, like you see in 1984 or Scientology. Get people to say the dumbest shit imaginable (“Two hot celebrities dating is a psyop culm, inating in the Illuminati fixing the Super Bowl so you’ll have to get vaccinated!”) and they’ll believe anything.”
Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift hasn’t even endorsed President Joe Biden for reelection yet. That hasn’t stopped upper crust members of MAGAworld Inadequates Inc. from declaring a “holy war” on the pop mega-star, especially if she ends up publicly backing the Democrats in the 2024 election.
According to three people familiar with the matter, Trump loyalists working on or close to the former president’s campaign, longtime Trump allies in right-wing media, and an array of outside advisers to the ex-president have long taken it as a given that Swift will eventually endorse Biden, as she did in 2020. Indeed, several of these Republicans and conservative media figures have discussed the matter with Trump over the past few months. In recent weeks, the Inadequate-in-Chief has told people that no amount of A-list celebrity endorsements will save Biden. Trump has also privately claimed that he is “more popular” than Swift is and that he has more committed fans than she does. Last month, he said that it “obviously” made no sense that he was not named Time magazine’s 2023 Person of the Year,an honor that went to none other than Swift.
The state of affairs among MAGA Inadequates Inc. is truly remarkable. A subset of America actually purports to boycott Disney, the world's preeminent entertainment company; Bud Light, once America's most popular beer; Target, the quintessential brick-and-mortar shopping destination; Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company that produced life-saving Covid-19 vaccines; Major League Baseball, the nation's favorite pastime; and now Taylor Swift, a generational icon who is one of the most successful musical artists of all time.
It’s incredibly idiotic, but the online right-wing worldview ALWAYS chooses bizarre conspiracies as their default setting for any event that captures the public interest. As Jonah Goldberg put it at The Dispatch, “Now they declare war on the National Football League and Taylor Swift - what’s next, sunny days and hotdogs?”
World’s Dumbest Mick and Proof the English Were Right, Sean “Hammerhead” Hannity, running to not be late to the party, has concluded Taylor Swift was lied to and misled by the left, saying, “Maybe she just bought into all the lies about conservatives and Republicans, that they’re racist and sexist and homophobic, and xenophobic and transphobic and Islamophobic, that Republicans and conservatives want dirty air and water and a total ban on all abortion with no exceptions. If she believes all that, she is believing a lie because those talking points are simply untrue. Now, I’m just saying maybe she wants to think twice before making a decision About 2024.”
(Mmmm, Sean baby, I hate - no, I don’t, I love it! - being the guy to tell you that it’s you who have been misinformed. All you and the rest of the seething Inadequates ARE INDEED “racist and sexist and homophobic, and xenophobic, and transphobic, and Islamophobic, and want dirty air and water, and a total ban on all abortion with no exceptions.” IT’S YOU baby!!)
Every last one of the Inadequates - from The Inadequate-in-Chief, to Best-Dressed Turd Steve Bannon, to reincarnation of Reinhard Heydrich Steven Miller, through all the otherwise-unemployable grifters like junior college flunkout Charlie Kirk - knows in their heart that no matter what they ever do, nothing will ever lead to the glass door they have had their noses pressed to all their loser lives opening with an invitation to come inside.
Trump knows that all the famous golfers he invites to his courses tell everyone they know about how he cheats so obviously, and laugh at him.
Miller knows that the Cool Kidz at Santa Monica High who laughed at him for all those years won’t be inviting him to the After Party at his Twentieth Year Reunion next year.
Bannon knows that no one in Hollywood who matters is ever going to return his many phone calls.
Because They. Are. Losers.
It’s the knowledge of how Inadequate they all are and always have been that drives them, like the lost souls in “The Day of the Locust,” to want to knock down Taylor Swift - who has shattered virtually every major record in the music industry, as she lives her best life supporting her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, while she breaks the brains of each one of the Inadequates.
The digital fever swamps are where the boys no woman would ever touch gather to fume over everything and anything Swift-related. Her world-wide popularity, the success of the Eras Tour - which is so big that it has notably added to the country’s Gross National Product - her relationship, her appearances at NFL games, and especially her politics - all of that drives the losers crazy.
When the Chiefs won the AFC championship on Sunday, punching the team’s ticket to the Super Bowl (for the third time since t hey appeared in the first on), the Inadequates began shouting about long-standing conspiracy theories around the NFL’s “scriptwriting” for football seasons.
All that gets added to the river of shit pouring from the Inadequate conspiracy theorists who have been claiming since she was first spotted at a Chief’s game that Swift’s involvement with Kelce is part of a deep state plot to build support for President Biden in the 2024 election.
The result is as ugly as it is stupid.
Millenial We’d All Like To Throw From An Upper Story Window Head First, Inadequate blowhard Vivek Ramaswamy, tweeted last Monday that he wondered “who’s going to win the Super Bowl next month,” adding, “I wonder if there’s a major presidential endorsement coming from an artificially culturally propped-up couple this fall. Just some wild speculation over here, let’s see how it ages over the next 8 months.”
That was in response to Pizzagate conspiracy theorist Jack Posobiec, who suggested there was a suspicious shift in Swift’s political leanings over the past several years.
Laura Loomer - who it’s rumored gives the worst blowjobs of any of the professional MAGA bimbos - wrote on Elmo’s Xitter (that’s pronounced, “shitter”) that “The Democrats’ Taylor Swift election interference psyop is happening in the open. They are going to use Taylor Swift as the poster child for their pro-abortion GOTV Campaign.”
Swift has not yet announced if she’ll attend the Super Bowl — as she has a concert in Tokyo, Japan the night before (Due to the International Date Line that allows her to leave Japan just before midnight of the day before the event and arrive in Las Vegas in the early afternoon of the day before the event, she’s pretty likely) Looney Loomer suggested in another post that Swift would be seated next to former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom at the game. “Just in time for 2024.”
Far-right influencer Rogan O’Handley posted a message on Xitter addressed to the San Francisco 49ers, in which he suggested that if the Chiefs won the Super Bowl, Swift and Kelce would trigger an apocalyptic chain of events that would kill millions. “You MUST defeat the Chiefs! If you don’t, Mr. Pfizer and his girlfriend are going to tour the country as ‘world champions’ helping elect Joe Biden WW3 will likely follow in a 2nd Biden term and millions will die. The fate of the free world rests upon your shoulders”
Failed GOP candidate Jack Lombardi II wrote on Xitter that he has “never been more convinced that the Super Bowl is rigged. With all the unneeded and unwanted Taylor coverage at the games. KC’s journey to the Superbowl – totally scripted … KC wins. And then later [they announce] their support for Biden. Coincidental? No. Bought and paid for couple. SMH.” He later posted that, “Taylor Swift is nothing more than a controlled influencer who has been put to work by those who seek to destroy America. She is a very talented operative working for the same group responsible for the timely and coincidental covid-19.”
Podcast host Mike Crispi raged that “The NFL is totally RIGGED for the Kansas City Chiefs, Taylor Swift, Mr. Pfizer (Travis Kelce). All to spread DEMOCRAT PROPAGANDA. Calling it now: KC wins, goes to Super Bowl, Swift comes out at the halftime show and ‘endorses’ Joe Biden with Kelce at midfield.”
And just to prove that every part of MAGA Inadequates, Inc., is aboard for this shitshow, when I was in the grocery store this afternoon, I spotted the new issue of the National Inquirer in the rack by the checkout line. The third headline read” “CROOKED NFL REFS ALL IN FOR RIGGING SUPER BOWL.”
Republican Georgia politician Kandiss Taylor wrote that she “tried to warn yall back in October that the influence of [Taylor Swift] on our youth with witchcraft was demonic, evil, and Luciferian. Of course, Satan wants to use her now to elect Joe back into the White House to destroy what’s left of America.”
Conservative commentator Benny Johnson freaked out over a magazine stand at a Barnes & Noble that had been stocked exclusively with Taylor Swift covers. He posted on Xitter that “Taylor Swift is an op. It’s all fake. You’re being played.”
Charlie Warzel, staff writer at The Atlantic who covers the intersection of politics, technology, and culture, wrote, "There’s something striking about watching the far-right tying itself in knots and attacking Swift and Kelce that demonstrates how badly the far-right media has alienated itself from most of society. They’ve built out this alternate universe and reality of grievance and it feels like instead of using it to wage an effective culture war, they’re fully lost in it and can’t see that they’ve chosen as their primary enemy the person with the literal highest approval rating in American life right now."

in a way gaylor is really effective in showing how big and varied the gay community - or in this case specifically the wlw community - can be lol. I feel like the aspect of gender presentation often gets overlooked, when from what i have seen, it can play a part in how eager people are to accept taylor as a lesbian icon (which is seperate to saying she is gay, to be transparent). These are generalizing statements of course and (because the community is big and diverse!) are not Static and True, but in my experience, women to whom "not performing femininity in a way society favors" is a huge part both of identity and life experience are less likely to accept Taylor as a lesbian icon. Which makes sense: Taylor is stereotypically feminine to a t (which imo is only heightened by her very unimaginative way to play with gender e.g. in The Man video), and in a time of "this is the butchest woman twitter can handle" it can be really annoying to see such a girlie girl heralded as some lesbian icon of our time. Which does not take away from the fact that other gay women really see themselves in Taylor and her music!!!! and of course, gnc women can and do also see themselves in Taylor and her music because what i mentioned is ultimately surface level stuff. It just bugs me when people sometimes frame not understanding gaylorism as either internalized homophobia or an inability to Get The WLW Community, when no experience is universal and when there are many very very understandable reasons to reject Beacon of Heterosexual Femininity Taylor Swift as lesbian rep. (not to mention that many gay women are also part of more punk/alternative spaces and thus are already less likely to engage with taylor's music by default. Taylor's middle of the road politics and the ire people may feel toward her as a result may be part of all of this too. I know many gay people who prefer artists who actually are transgressive and advocate for the queer community in risky ways.)
this is extremely well-said, thank you for sending it! i completely agree that a big appeal (and lack of appeal, for others) of gaylorism is taylor's uber-all-american-femininity

I get why fantasy authors would default to using, like, the same basic arrangement of seasons and weather and gravity that we have here in The Real World because they have to make up so much shit as it is and it IS probably good praxis to give your readers some familiar touchstones in your world so they can just focus on the plot, but. having said that. I think there should be more settings that have seventeen seasons, all of them different lengths, and constellations that don't have fixed patterns because sometimes they'll get pissy and just move to a different part of the sky, and sometimes the sun tells people things telepathically, and there's a type of weather where the air just gets really thick and difficult to walk through that's unpleasant but not any more uncommon than rain. it's called smärklf.

the worst part of my job (standing around at college orientations being Visibly Queer) is when parents nervously alter their entire walking trajectory to stay out of range as if I'm going to bite them and pass on my infectious homosexuality.
this is wildly eclipsed by the best part of my job, parents who are such wildly enthusiastic allies that their children seem a little embarrassed about it. I'm talking parents who eagerly point out my little rainbow-draped table and urge their kids to come over, parents who excitedly pick through my button box offering up the relevant pride flags and pronouns to their kids, parents who have detailed questions about harassment policies and gender affirming care while their kids are trying to wander away, parents who rush over with open arms and obvious glee on their faces knowing there's a space on campus dedicated to keeping their kids safe.
the ferocity with which these parents love and affirm their queer kids is so humbling and wonderful.

My #1 post of 2022
all goofing aside I genuinely don't understand the urge to reimagine Taylor Allison Swift as a secretly queer icon when the pop music scene(TM) is like. literally overflowing with women who actually like women. Gaga and Kesha and Miley and Halsey are right there. Rina Sawayama and Hayley Kiyoko and Rebecca Black and Kehlani and Victoria Monét and Miya Folick if you're willing to get slightly less top 100. Janelle and Demi for them nonbinary takes on liking girls. like what are we doing here. like I'm not even saying you can't enjoy Taylor but why would you hang all your little gay hopes on her.

Manipulation, Distortion, FOMO, & Nostalgia: Is the use of people as a subject to AI morally right?
By: Hydra 🐍
In response to Gem Fletcher's, "Maria Mavropoulou — How the artist used AI to rewrite her own family history:"
Artificial Intelligence is rapidly taking over the world– and no I am not referring to the humankind-killing AI robot in The Terminator– but the simplicity of having accessible AI engines at our finger tips. Take the app TikTok for instance, not only does it rely on AI to curate a “for you page” unique to each viewer based on their past data, but it also contains many filters that can be used to generate images from simple prompts. When these filters are used to distort ourselves or other individuals that exist in reality, are we negatively affecting the way we view humanity? Does manipulating images of people have any benefits, or are we essentially creating “false advertisements” in hopes to be perceived in a certain way?
Maria Mavropoulou tests these burning questions with an optimistic point of view. Mavropoulou creates AI photographs of events that have happened in the past and speculative “what if” scenarios, to fill the void of nostalgia due to the missed capturing of actual photographs throughout her life. Mavropoulou describes the collection of “Imagined Images” as healing on a personal level. She was unable to look back on her history in visuals, so instead she creates these images to help understand her past and shape her future.
Tumblr media
Being a delusional girly myself, I am all for living in a false narrative world created by my own thoughts and fantasies. I also suffer from the commonly caught illness known as FOMO (For Gen X'rs who mistakenly clicked this Tumblr link expecting to prove how Artificial Intelligence is detrimental, FOMO means Fear of Missing Out), which I think Mavropoulou knows all to well. On a serious note, there is something gut wrenching about not having physical evidence of past events. Photographs encapsulate proof that an individual has truly lived. They freeze time to remind us of memories, which don’t always last in the storage of our own minds.
I can’t help but wonder if these images mask as a delusion, a way to distract herself from the hurt of not experiencing or retaining these monumental experiences. Is it healthy to find comfort in fiction? Maybe in the form of a good book, but isn’t distorting your whole past going a little too far? After all, this isn’t The Sims, we can’t actually use cheat codes to go in and completely alternate everyone that lives in our world (the default townies are just so... strange).
Although there are positive outcomes of creating images using AI software, there is also equally as many negatives. A big issue we are facing in this current digital age is the use of deepfakes. Deepfakes have been used to make people say explicit phrases and appear a certain way (usually pornographic material). These photos and videos can be created of anyone active in the digital space. If photos and other user data is available, it can be used. Deepfakes have been an extreme controversy in the past, but have recently regained attention when someone created explicit nude photos of (the iconic, might I add) Taylor Swift, and posted them on X. We now have to live with the worrying thought that people can use our images to unconsensually (and also unknowingly) create pornographic material.
I may be hypocritical because I too am part of the problem. I spend most hours of the day on my devices picking the perfect photos and videos of how I want to represent myself on social media, passively scrolling on TikTok until I am fulfilled– which never happens to be the case – and interacting with posts and filters that I know are obscuring the truth. Maybe we need to share less of our lives online to prevent people from using our information for AI distortion. Maybe if there is one thing we can take away from Mavropoulou’s collection, is the fact that we need to capture the moments in a photograph for personal use. Not a low quality image from an iPhone that constantly over heats because it is used far too often, but a physical camera specifically created way back when to do this exact job. Fuck phone cameras, I want to see someone pull out the heliograph at a bar.

Tumblr users with the default icon are lucky I check their likes and who they're following. One person wasn't blocked because they were following a ton of Ted Lasso blogs. Someone is now following the prompts blog and is following mostly Taylor Swift blogs so they can stay.
As far as I can tell, the bots don't pay any attention to who they're following and there's near zero overlap in the content of who they're following. I was looking at who one of the bots was following trying to figure it out once and was just perplexed.
Newbies: change your icon!

USWNT Roster Drop: June 30, 2023
US Soccer Federation (USSF) released the US Women's National Team (USWNT) provisional roster for the world cup on June 21 with a celebrity-studded social media campaign that culminated with global-icon superstar Taylor Swift announcing global-icon superstar Alex Morgan. The roster has 23 players–3 goalkeepers, 7 defenders, 7 midfielders, and 6 forwards.
https://www.ussoccer.com/wwc-roster
Since the 2019 World Cup, the USWNT player pool has suffered due to key players retiring or getting injured. As vital as players can be on their own, a team’s chemistry and familiarity with each other can be just as important in a tournament run.  And with so many interruptions (including absences for pregnancies), team USA has been switching players in and out of the rosters and starting lineups, many people think that this team compatibility has not formed as solidly as it was in past years. Of the 23 players, 14 of them will be playing in their first world cup. One surprising inclusion is 25-year-old Savannah Demelo, who is the first player to get called up to the World Cup without any national team experience since Shannon Boxx in 2003. DeMelo earned her spot by dominating the midfield and going on an absolute scoring tear with her club team, Racing Louisville FC (Coincidentally, Racing is the team I support in the NWSL).
The most shocking absence from the roster is Becky Sauerbrunn, team captain and my personal favorite player. She suffered an injury earlier in the NWSL season, and will not fully recover before the world cup. Heart. Broken. Other USA players missing the world cup because of injury are Mallory Swanson, Catarina Macario, and Sam Mewis.
Here are the players that I think will make up the starting 11:
Keeper: Alyssa Naeher
Alyssa Naeher was the starting keeper in the 2019 World Cup, but has had a rough season with her club team, Chicago Red Stars. However, I think the USWNT will default to her veteran experience, especially for bigger games.
Defenders: Alana Cook, Naomi Girma,  Emily Fox,  Crystal Dunn
Alana Cook was not the person most people expected to be a starting center back, but she is getting her chance in the wake of teammate Becky Sauerbrunn's injury. Cook is 5'9", giving her a couple inches on many players, and making her a dominant vertical presence in the box. This will be her first World Cup, but like any good defender, she is known for being cool under pressure.
Naomi Girma is another centerback going into her first World Cup. Her 2022 rookie year in the NWSL ended in her winning both Rookie of the Year and Defender of the Year, as well as a nomination for MVP. She followed up her banner year in the NWSL with equally impressive performances in the USWNT lineup.
Emily Fox is likely the starting left back. She earned her first call-up to the national team while she was still in college, which is impressive, but not necessarily uncommon. Since then she has made her way into the lineup because of her speed and crossing ability. She scored her first national team goal (as a defender) in April 2023.
Crystal Dunn is the most versatile player on the team. Earlier in her career she played forward and midfield, but transitioned to outside back as a gap in that position opened prior to the 2015 World Cup. Even as a defender, she hasn’t lost her goal-scoring ability, and like Fox, can contribute great crosses into the box.
Midfielders: Lindsey Horan, Andi Sullivan, Rose Lavelle, Trinity Rodman
Lindsey Horan will likely start as center offensive midfielder, and will serve as team captain in the absence of Becky Sauerbrunn. Horan is the only player in this lineup that plays club soccer abroad, for Lyon in France. This suits her technical style, but generally the French league is less physical than many teams she will be facing, so she could risk getting bodied off the ball.
Andi Sullivan plays defensive center midfield, helping to transition the ball from defense to offense. She captains her club team, Washington Spirit, because she is so trusted in the middle of the pitch to direct the flow of play through the midfield.
Rose Lavelle can play anywhere in the midfield or up front, but with a wealth of talent in those areas, will probably end up at outside midfield. She has a laser-like shot from outside the box and has proven that she can impact the game from wherever she is on the field.
Trinity Rodman will likely be the other outside mid. Although this will be her first World Cup, she has beena young phenom and a spark of energy in games for club and country. Watch the front three midfielders (Rodman, Lavelle, and Horan) switch positions in the run of play, making the attack fluid and unpredictable.
Forwards: Alex Morgan, Sophia Smith
Alex Morgan is the most recognized player on the team, with a reputation built on a long history of goal scoring. She has been consistently good since her first World Cup, and even with a new child, has maintained her level of performance. She’s a shoe-in.
Sophia Smith will likely start because of her impressive performance in club soccer with Portland Thorns. Many people would not have expected her to be a starter, but earlier in 2023 expected starter Mallory Swanson suffered an injury that would take her out of the World Cup. Smith doesn’t have Swanson’s experience, but will bring energy and fresh ideas to the team’s offense.
With all the young players, the new players, and a new captain, both fans and pundits worry that the USA will not be able to win a third straight World Cup. I think that there will be some growing pains as the team finds chemistry, but I also believe that the raw talent level of these players can match any other team in the world. Success will depend on how well the 23 women can settle into a rhythm, but simultaneously be individually creative to catch opponents off-guard.

how olivia rodrigo’s album, sour, avoids girl-on-girl hate
by Gabriélla Siebritz
the angsty teen girl heartbreak power anthems have made a revival thanks to one of Hollywood’s newest it-girls, olivia rodrigo. her debut album, Sour, which was released on May 21st, 2021, tells the familiar tale of a young girl experiencing one of her first, most intense heartbreaks which would undoubtedly shape her going forward, as it did for so many of us in the past, present and future.
her album received wild success, going on to win three Grammys since its global debut. olivia’s sweet yet edgy persona drew listeners in - on the outside, she is graceful, funny, soft-spoken and charming, but once pressing play on Sour, her internal, raw and turbulent emotions of deep-seeded heartbreak, frustration and anger (she is a pisces, after all) are expressed through cleverly written lyrics, reminiscent of early-years lyrical prodigy taylor swift as well as our melodramatic genius, lorde.
a common theme throughout music, particularly those penned about the breakup blues and the boys who dropped the glass hearts of our songstresses, is the “me vs her” trope, which boils down to comparing the heartbroken to the heartbreaker’s new object of affection. the recurring themes of jealousy, sorrow, and “i’m better than her" energy, is a well-documented, and admittedly cliché, storyline that listeners follow along through an artist’s music. although cliché, the theme keeps repeating itself - like a broken record, some might say - and yet, artists are discovering new ways to breathe fresh air into it without it being overdone or overrated. olivia rodrigo, like the countless brilliant singer-songwriters who came before her, does exactly that.
however, the subtle yet somehow still noticeable difference in olivia’s music (which has a modernized sound of the early-two thousands pop rock genre, reminding listeners of the sounds of alanis morissette, kelly clarkson and the iconic punk pop princess avril lavinge) is that, yes she’s frustrated with the boy who broke her heart, angry and jealous that he’s moved on, but that’s where the direction of her feelings end. olivia, unlike taylor swift’s song better than revenge or paramore’s misery business, leaves the so-called ‘other women’ unburned from the flames of her rage - instead of saying “she took him faster than you can say ‘sabotage”’ or “she’s an actress (woah) / she’s better known for the things that she does on the mattress (woah)”, as taylor swift so delicately put it, olivia chooses to instead compliment the girl who would otherwise be considered her enemy. through lyrics such as “she’s so sweet, she’s so pretty”, and “like cutting her down will make you miss my wretched heart / but she’s beautiful, she looks kind”, in her song happier, much like majority of her album, the pen she used to write these songs aren’t loaded with ink full of disdain towards his new girlfriend, aimed and ready to tear her down through not-so-subtle digs, disguised as eloquently put together lyrics.
it’s an unfortunately common theme for women to blame and essentially hate each other for the actions of the men they’ve been in relationships with. whether that’s finding out you’ve become the scorned women through infidelity or simply harboring resentment towards his new girl because she serves as evidence that he’s moved on, the default is to rip apart and belittle the other women in the situation. i’m not saying breakups aren’t allowed (if it’s not working, it’s just not working) from either party involved or there aren’t cases where the unwanted third party wasn’t aware of the two-person party going on, but a lot of the time the blame is misplaced.
olivia decided to go a completely different route, changing the narrative of the all too familiar girl-on-girl blame game that plays out once a relationship comes to an end, even if it is one stream at a time.

I know I am horrifically late (tbh I’m terrible at social media beyond checking my messages, forgive me friends), but I was tagged by @amidst-stars and @plagueofskeletons and possibly other people I’m forgetting to share my a few of my favorite fics!
The truth is that whatever I’m working on at the moment/my most recent project is usually my favorite, so I had a lot of trouble picking. This list is weighted heavily toward more recent fics, but here are two BNHA fics + one other fic I wrote that I’m fond of!
How to (Not) Get Over Your Infuriatingly Hot, Talented, and Funny Ex: A Guide by Sokka (ATLA, Zukka, 14.7k, T)
I wrote this for the ATLA Big Bang last year and had a lot of fun with Sokka’s POV and general approach toward life. It was supposed to be angstier when I was planning it out but somehow turned into the least angsty getting-back-together-post-semi-recent-breakup fic I’ve ever read. Sokka’s taste in Taylor Swift and computational linguistics is legendary, and Zuko is an icon.  There was also wonderful art and music (yes, music! One of Zuko’s songs and an improv session are embedded in the fic) created for the big bang too, and that was awesome to see come to life. One thing the pandemic has taken from me is jamming with friends for fun, and I hope I captured some of that spirit in this fic.
on paper mountains (BNHA, dabihawks, 58.9K, M)
This is my homage to writers and artists. I started writing this because I was (and am) very frustrated with the state of the world, but what got me to finish was watching the characters grow. I wanted to root for Touya and Keigo to not count themselves out despite pushing 40. I wanted to see Keigo learn that there is somewhere in the world he belongs. I wanted Touya to learn that not every aspect of old traditions and culture should be thrown away by default. I wanted to root for Shouto, who wanted so badly to learn more about his own family that he’d go behind their backs to do so.
I liked this fic so much I printed it for me + a few friends (see my twitter for photos for the curious). I don’t think I can write dabihawks young anymore—every time I have since finishing this fic, something’s just missing. I liked this world so much I’ve written a bonus chapter (already on my ao3), a sequel (it’s a genfic and a very different beast of a fic. The rough draft is completed and sitting on my computer waiting for me to start editing), and a short AU of this AU (that I won’t be posting until the sequel is up because it’s related).
sugar and spice (BNHA, Shiganatsu, 4.7K, T)
Lol. This is my weirdest AU. BNHA meets GBBO meets John Mulaney. Yes, I’ll fess up right now that a few of John Mulaney’s routines were the inspiration for Natsuo’s routines. I would pay good money to see Natsuo live and/or demand Netflix to get him to make more specials if I were in this world.
I wrote the bulk of this fic on a Saturday morning because I was bored, and formatting it on ao3 took longer than actually writing it. I was very pleasantly surprised when friends actually thought my jokes were hilarious—I was worried they’d fall flat haha.
Everyone has probably already done this already because I’m slow as shit. If @juurensha, @soysaucemachine, @lionalicelives haven’t and feel like it, I’d love to see you guys do this!

So idk I am feeling conflicted bc you know how there’s a sect of the lgbt community who are all like “go listen to real queer artists and stop trying to make Taylor seem one of us through your lyric analysis” like.
I mean I get what they’re saying and it’s not even like Taylor presents as a great ally lmao but like... I feel like that argument just forgets that 1) closeted people exist and 2) straight people can write songs that can be analyzed through a queer lens
Like I mean there is a severe lack of out mainstream artists and I get we should absolutely support the ones that are Bc it makes it easier for closeted people to come out the more mainstream it is... but like... idk. I do think some people take Taylor’s sexuality too far and to consider her a gay icon is just like not it right now... but like her music slaps and you don’t have to be straight to relate to it. There are so many of her songs that I listen to and think of my ex gf when I do so it’s like? Maybe Taylor didn’t write DBATC for a woman but I ascribe it to one when I listen to it and like that’s the point of music you know?
Idk I get why some lgbt people are annoyed by her but like... I just feel like no one considers that being closeted is a thing and I think some lgbt people fall into the same default that straight people do and just assume everyone is straight unless they have a huge coming out announcement. And like that’s not fair to anyone tbh.
Yeah look I mean I have MANY thoughts on this:
1) shit doesn't need to be canonically gay in order for it to be relatable. Same as how straight people can and SHOULD relate to queer storylines too because WE ARE ALL HUMAN. No one is ever going to write a banger of a breakup song like Adele. Do I think she has a fruity bone in her body? I mean like maybe she's kissed a girl at a party one time but like all her songs are for her about boys. But they're not necessarily about boys for me. And that doesn't make them worse or less relatable. I'm allowed to ugly cry and listen to Turning Tables and I don't have to picture a bloke when I do that.
2) that's true for minority/majority art in general. Minority groups generally find ways to identify to majority groups, but I LOVE it when majority groups identify to my minority identities. Like yaaaaas goy straight bitches please go stan Broad City. The girls are SO Jewish and... so bi... but like I WANT YOU TO LIKE IT and relate. And most people I've spoken to feel that way regardless of identity. Like, obvi the point is not to appropriate but like yes I'm going to bop and sing to Formation and I'll not say the hair line when I'm singing it in my car - y'all should lowkey know by now Lemonade is like one of my favorite albums because I reference it that much - there are lines I skip but the PREMISE of like being with your group of girls is completely relatable to me. Do I get the nuance she's communicating? Cerebrally but obvi not like to my core, but it's a dope song, and I can have fun singing it.
3) those are two important sidebars and bring us back to Taylor. IMO it's okay to like Taylor's music in a gay way in the same way we queer people like Adele's or even in the way goy straight girls like Broad City. Like it's okay if she didn't mean it that way and she didn't mean to speak to us but did via the human experience and that's like beautiful y'know and makes her a phenomenal artist.
4) it's also important to realize that yes Taylor could be closeted but besties she's not like... revolving her life around it. She has made a choice to live a hetty presenting life and - here's where we get to the kicker - she has fostered the bullying of queer fans who pick up on themes in her music and ship while having no issue with hetty weirdos. And that makes me HOPE she's queer in some way and not homophobic because if you are an ally and you're letting people speculate about EVERY boy you're in contact with but lose your shit when it looks like you kissed your female friend, ehhh that's on you. You're a bad ally and a bit homophobic.
5) which brings me to "why I hope she's queer": fundamentally because it'd make her less stupid and more likable, and it'd make her faux pas missteps more understandable because it was like ~personal and she struggled, and it'd make the signaling she's done (and don't start this I never include ship shit I always talk about sus statements and flag usage etc and it's in my nat talks gaylor tag) more understandable.
6) if she's straight eh people have just as much right to queer read her songs as we do with Adele and Lana. It doesn't matter.
Maybe Taylor Swift is straight. If so she has a LONG way to go in terms of allyship, and a long way to go compared to just about every pop star who has come before her. Like she's a problem dudes. She's a homophobe because she's allowed a fandom which allows folklore songs to be assigned to HARRY but freaks at Wonderland being assigned to Dianna Agron.
Maybe she's bi, and I wish society would allow for that but I don't think it does especially not in her case.
Either way I wish hetlors would get off truthering because it doesn't matter.
So someone thinks she's gay. Cool. Make like Elsa and let it go, why can't that be the case? Again, I am CONVINCED Blake, Scarlett, Emma W, and a host of other celebs are straight. I won't truther someone who's saying Emma and Bonnie shared rooms together because I'd be like "lol Bonnie has the range but Emma doesn't but fair enough" and leave it at that.
Being OBSESSED with this issue is weird.
And before some anon says - I'm not obsessed. Maybe she's straight, I think she could be bi, maybe she's a lesbian dealing with comphet. I'm not her and I don't know! But what I am veeeery convinced of is she ain't no gold star.

I think taylor was homophobic in the beginning of her career. Her original lyrics for picture to burn included “I’ll tell mine you’re gay” and all she did was change the lyrics. She didn’t really address the problem.
This is my thing, a lot of you will say oh she could be bi, but she is pretty heteronormative. When Hayley Kiyoko called out the music industry and used taylor as an example, taylor agreed— she never has to worry about writing songs about guys. It’s an example of her straight as the default sort of view.
She also talked about how she didn’t speak up much about gay issues because she didn’t think she could be an advocate for a community she’s not a part. Look, I would love a bi Taylor Swift, but a lot of people want to say that and not really hold actually accountable. She is a straight woman, and because of that, she doesn’t actually understand queer issues.
Another perfect example is Betty. She said she sang it from the perspective of a man. She never even thought about how it had queer undertones. I think a lot people give her too much credit. I don’t think she’s a bi icon and I don’t think people should list all her examples of her allyship, because to be frank, up until YNTCD she was pretty comfortable not doing much. This isn’t me harping on Taylor. I think she’s a pretty good ally, but even so, she gets wayyyy to much credit for being a queen icon with folklore and evermore, when again sorry if this is harsh, but I don’t think Taylor ever even thought of things from a queer perspective because she even admitted that when Hayley used her for an example of heteronormativity... she never thought about. Just my food for thought. Also this is not me defending her heterosexuality. I think those fans are homophobic af. There is nothing wrong with being gay. That’s not what I’m writing here! So those people can just stop and not use me as example for their homophobia. :(
i’d say based on the evidence she was casually homophobic the way many people were back in the early ‘00s. that’s not an excuse - but taylor changed the lyrics and hasn’t said anything like that since, so she clearly learned to do better.
