so ive identified as bisexual for a long time but ive discovered recently i feel very comfortable within the lesbian ideas of gender and specifically the butchfemme community. i’ve been dating someone recently who also identified as bisexual but has related to transmasc lesbians understanding of gender as well as posts about butches. we both kind of see ourselves within the butchfemme dynamic but i’ve been very tough on myself with calling myself a lesbian because i’ve dated a man before (…in middle school..)

it’s gotten to the point where i’m really worried to label myself because of what it’d imply for my partner? but also what people would say? and while i know i dont HAVE to label myself it just sucks to know theres an identity im drawn to and feel like i fit into that i cant immediately slip into

hmm i'm not really sure how to guide you here. i guess i want to challenge you on some of the things you're saying here, it feels like you're coming at this from maybe the "wrong" angle (wrong feels too harsh a word, maybe just not the most helpful angle)

you're worried you can't call yourself a lesbian because you dated a boy in middle school? i think.. a LOT of lesbians dated boys in jr. high and high school and there are lots of late in life lesbians who were married to men for years before figuring out who they are and coming out. this is all completely normal and common. like, dating one boy in middle school doesn't really mean much tbh. i wouldn't base your identity or label you use around something like that. i dated a bunch of boys in high school and early college when i was still figuring out who i was. your labels or identity or gender or sexuality don't need to account for all you life experiences and past. it's not so much about your sexual history but describing who you are *now*, what you're interested in, in the present.

you say both you and your partner really like Lesbian Genders and butch/femme stuff. that's nice, but liking and relating to lesbian culture and gender stuff doesn't make you a lesbian haha! it's who you're attracted to and who you're not, that determines your orientation. gender and orientation are different things, as i'm sure you know. obviously very connected and stuff. like, for example, just because someone identifies as a man it doesn't make him straight, even though heterosexuality is an integral part of manhood, in the dominant culture. gay trans men are certainly not rare! the same goes for you guys.

also, remember that transmasculinity is a broad umbrella and encompasses a wide variety of people and their identities and experiences. plenty of butches aren't transmasc, and probably most transmascs aren't butch.

i will tell you that in the course of running this blog and being on the internet, i've probably seen and shared thousands of photos and drawing of people. not once have i ever seen something that represents me and my wife. if you are seeking out representation or examples of the options to be, in order to figure out who/what you are, i would advise against that. seek what feels true to you, what feels honest and right. you do not need to be similar to other people in order to find belonging, acceptance, and community. (though of course this is absolutely nothing wrong or bad if you do find others just like you, if you do fit in to existing roles and dynamics! that is of course perfectly normal!)

now, i don't know you or your partner. you know yourselves best. i can't tell you what you really are or really aren't. and i certainly am not going to tell you what you can or can't be! everything i'm saying here is to prompt you to think about and questions to ponder for yourself.

so, i think you have some points to think about, why have you been identifying as bisexual? what is drawing you to the lesbian label? have you tried using 0 labels and not thinking about your identity or labels for at least a month or two (if not a several months) and then coming back and evaluating it afresh? what about the butch-femme dynamic are you drawn to? what is holding you back? you are allowed to discover that you are a lesbian! or you are allowed to continue to be bisexual! i can't tell you who you are - but you're allowed to be and do whatever you want, whatever feels true to you! even if it doesn't make sense to other people or you don't see anyone else like you out there. you gotta be a little bit brave!

hey!!! yeah i have lots of lesbian NB friends, and like im not a NB lesbian so probs not the best person to ask lol. my friend @hotcommunist​ is a good butch and a pillar of the community tbh and answers a lot of asks about a lot of things, maybe throw him an ask too? :0)so basically, and most importantly first off you can Just Be a NB lesbian if that’s your jam. if it feels right and feels like ur truth, then go for it! live it! You can work on understanding it later if u want? I did that w being a woman lol.One way of understanding it is to start with the realisation that ‘woman’ as a gender has been constructed in a heterosexual relationship to ‘man’ as a gender. So if you reject womanhood and also manhood, you can be NB. Similarly if a lesbian rejects the heterosexual relationships that make woman ‘woman’ and man ‘man’ (i.e. women are weak, men are strong. women are emotional, men are logical. women and men are meant to be together and only together) then in a way, you are rejecting what ‘woman’ has always been made to mean by heterosexual society.The theorist Monique Wittig carries this point onwards. She asks, without heterosexuality, what are women? Since ‘woman’ has only ever meant something heterosexually involved with men, then to be a lesbian, to reject heterosexual relations with men, means that you’re not a woman. Most importantly, however is the long history of working-class butches who lived and breathed this life. how to tell a femme lesbian from a straight girl (the answer u wont like)

so when i mean if u know how to look you can spot a straight girl from a femme lesbian i dont mean like. show me a picture of a het and a femme and i’ll be able to spot the lesbian (i might be able to but its not bc of how they look)

i know yall arent gonna like this post bc its based off generalizations but uh. generalizations are how u make judgements abt things without flat out asking someone so unless u think its better to assume the statistically speaking less-likely scenario then this is ur best bet

the vast majority of my gaydar relies on body language, social cues, behaviors, and what information a person chooses to share when the subject of sexuality comes up

obviously none of those things are 100% foolproof, my gaydar has been wrong before (like everyones has) and all that other disclaimer bullshit, but if u know what to look for u can probably figure it out (again, not every lesbian acts this way and some straight girls do act this way, dont call me a heterophobe or accuse me of “stereotyping lesbians” bc i do not have the patience for that bullshit and i will block u dont try me tonight)

heres the deal: lesbians have very different life experiences than straight women. there comes a time in every lesbian’s life where u have to come to terms with the fact that the entire universe revolves around men but ur entire universe has nothing to do with them and frankly doesnt give a damn about them. u end up disconnected from the entire world, questioning your own value and usefulness, and all kinds of other angsty lesbian things. we all know this.

and straight girls dont experience that. obviously straight women dont base their entire lives around men. im not claiming they do. but straight women’s universes inherently include men, and the socialization that straight women and lesbians experience gives two different outcome because you have two different initial conditions

when push comes to shove, men are essentially irrelevant from lesbians’ lives. outside of compulsory heterosexuality, we don’t have anything to prove to them. yeah we might be friends with them, but at the end of the day, how men feel about us is. irrelevant tbh.

a straight girl will care about how the men around her view her, through things like body checking (which lesbians can also partake in, mind u) and y making an effort to like. include and be active in men’s lives because they are men. straight women like men and they like men’s company. yeah, they’ll joke about “hating men” but at the end of the day they go home to their boyfriends or husbands and spend the rest of their lives with a man. (i am aware bi women do this too, but bi women’s experiences are fundamentally different from straight women’s experiences bc they arent straight, and this post is specifically abt lesbians vs straight women)

u have to overcome a lot of shit to be a lesbian, to call urself a lesbian, to know ur a lesbian. and that doesn’t happen without changing who u are deep down. lesbians hold their heads high, they dont fuck around, and they give off vibes. they prioritize women. they disregard men. they dont subconsciously cater to the men in the room. they pay more attention to women. they shy away from affection from men.

they also dont talk abt how much they love men. we all went to sleepovers with straight girls, we all got the dreaded “who do u like” question, and we all heard our straight girl friends talk aout the guys they like. a lesbian never praises some mediocre white guy because he’s “got nice hair” or whatever. they might shrug off comments about them not having a boyfriend, avoid talking about celebrities they like, and generally be vague when it comes to conversations about love. and u know why, lesbians generally dont start talking about being gay around a pack of straight girls who will immediately recoil at their once-believed-straight-now-evil-homosexual-friend’s touch

lesbians get a shit lot in life, to be frank. and u can see it. u can hear it. you can watch it. what do u do that u do bc ur a lesbian that isnt flannels and docs? how has being a lesbian influenced you? do u avoid eye contact with men? consciously sit near women at all times, stare a pretty classmate, avoid talking about boys? look for that same behavior in other women. it’s subtle, but if u pay attention you’ll see it

where is the line between transmasc/genderweird lesbians and Men with a capital M? i dont think there really is one, but as a lesbian who straddles that line, people are constantly trying to shame me onto one side or the other and its exhausting. i think sometimes the ppl trying to protect our community by keeping men out end up targeting mostly ppl who are in between or overlapping categories and are typically trans, instead of like, Cisguys preying on dykes. its become a real problem in the community just being visibly trans or butch tbh

i'll just say what i've said before. it's fuzzy/blurry. the nuances and intricacies of someone's gender through the narrow slice the internet (on anon!) is not enough for a stranger to make any sort of call about! it's something that individuals with non-binary gender experiences gotta use their own discretion about. people should go about these things with a mindset of using their best judgement and engaging in good faith, instead of like, pushing the boundaries of what is "allowed". instead of seeking approval and validation, seek to look inside onesself and determine 'is this for me? is this space for me? do i genuinely feel like i'm intruding and pushing the boundaries or do i feel like i'm being pushed out and unjustly excluded?'. those are different feelings and while i can imagine it's hard to discern sometimes, maybe talking with your irl people you can figure it out. yeah sometimes you gotta ask a clarifying question here and there to the organizers of the space in question -- i certainly do when seeing (nonlesbian) events for "femmes" and stuff like that haha!

not too long ago i used to think differently abt this but tbh rn im mostly of the opinion that certain stuff doesnt belong only to gay people (and im a lesbian myself). like for example i always see ppl saying "dont say the h slur if youre bi" or something. back when the word started being used against mlm and wlw, it was towards both gay and mga ppl. mga ppl were called that just as much, and many still are. bcs they were and still targeted for their attraction to ppl of their own gender. i know lots of other lesbians are probably gonna hate me for saying this but a similar case is the one of the terms butch and femme. ive heard ppl here say countless times that what made ppl start thinking those terms were exclusive to lesbians was lesbian se/parati/sm, and by that i mean cis lesbians who wanted to separate themselves from trans women, bi women and other cis lesbians who werent transmisogynistic
