me: due to my family’s general disconnect from judaism and also my at this point lack of interest or desire to become “more jewish” i would say my experience of learning yiddish is probably more like a goy’s than a jew’s

also me, watching adaptations of the tevye stories in which basically each one of the marriage situations has happened in my family: this is not how it actually happened in real jewish communities. i actually would know because my ancestors were shtetl jews. you see, i actually have a better perspective on being a jewish jew than whoever wrote and directed fiddler on the rood beause my ancestors (who by the way were jews)--

#tbh the first statement is also not true i think a lot of jews have yiddish-learning experiences very similar to mine #but also for steiner we had to watch several adaptations of the tevye stories and i kept being like 'oh huh just like babushka' 'oh huh just #like dadya gena' 'oh huh just like dad' #i'm about to spill all my family tea in yiddish tomorrow bc nobody in my family can yell at me for ratting out bc they can't understand lol #mayn tate's ershta vayb iz geven a goy (pause for gasps) #also i have not watched all of fiddler but based on portions of the soundtrack and the wikipedia summary #it seems like gender dynamics are significantly simplified and made fairly uninteresting despite nominally being a major part of the show? #also ok so 'each one' might be an exaggeration nobody (to my knowlegde) married an exiled bundist BUT one did move to rural siberia #of her own accord in the year of our lord 2000 #and at least the way it was told to me it was in large part bc she wanted to get away from her annoying parents
