My aim for this year was to have 25% of my reading be nonfiction. Here's another book to add to that. I bought this book in my favourite bookshop the day I got one of my tattoos done, it was a really lovely day.
This was a really interesting queer history about the concept of "female husbands" a phenomenon from the late 1700s to the 1900s. It was written by a queer person, which I really liked. Usually when people discuss trans masc people in the past, people use "We can't know how they would have identified" to use she/her pronouns for these people, but this author uses that to introduce they/them pronouns, which I much prefer. It was a really interesting look at a history not really looked into it, and I appreciated learning about things.
One thing that stuck with me was the author discussing the only binary that should matter in gender is Happy/Unhappy, and that gender should only matter in how it can make people happy, and I really liked the idea of reframing gender identity in terms of gender euphoria.

DNFed: When She Reigns by Jodi Meadows
Technically, I never even started this book. I loved the first instalment of the trilogy when I read it back in 2017 then bought the next two books when they came out but never got around to reading them. And now, I've apparently outgrown this story.
It makes me a little sad, because the story isn't bad, the main character is disabled, side characters are diverse, it has dragons! But I always found something more interesting to read and live's too short to hang on to it. And I can finally cross it off my #tbrbusterchallenge list after two (three?) years.

Well the start of a new month is right around the corner and summer is finally in full swing. I've been sort of a reading fiend this month, so hopefully that'll carry into July and I don't get too burnt out.
Like usual, you'll find the poll for my #tbrbusterchallenge selection here. Thanks for voting!

End of the summer: where is my TBRbusterchallenge going?
It seems June was the time when school took over my tumblr time and bookjournal time. I missed posting about my books and looking at other entries in the tag! So here’s what I’ve read since then:
Tumblr media
At the same time, I often searched for comfort in second-hand bookstores and now my TBR looks like this:

In summary, my TBRbusterchallenge will likely fall off its shelf soon.

Announcing the #tbrbusterchallenge2022
Welcome to the Third Annual TBR Buster Challenge!
The goal of this challenge is simple: read the books that have been languishing on your TBR lists.  Some of you may have impossibly long TBR lists. Some of you may have a TBR list that only includes a few books. Maybe you have a physical shelf stacked full of books. Or maybe it’s just an amorphous list that lives in some half forgotten corner of your mind. No matter where you fall on this spectrum, this challenge is for you!
The greatest part of this challenge is that it allows you to focus on what YOU want to read. You have the freedom to focus on whatever books you want. In the past, some people have issued their own personal challenges to focus on specific genres or lists of books. Others just plucked the next book that interested them from their shelf. Some people plowed through their lists like they were on a ferocious mission. Others read only a handful of books. This challenge is designed to be flexible!
So why not give it a go? Bust your TBR shelf with me!
The Basics to Get Started
Read a minimum of one book per month that has been languishing on your shelf. Want a more ambitious challenge? How many books do you read per year on average? Try making half of the part of the #tbrbusterchallenge2022. Don’t have time to read one book per month? That’s okay, too! You can pop in and out of this challenge as it fits into your schedule, and everyone will be here to support you :)
Post about the books you read! I am hoping to post mini-reviews every month. Don't like review? No problem!  Do you like taking photos of your books? Post ‘em! Do you like book quotes? Post ‘em! Anything and everything is welcome!
Tag your posts with #bookbanditchallenge and #tbrbusterchallenge2022 so I can see them and show you some love!
That’s it! Those are the rules. Hopefully, simple enough that everyone feels they can join in. Together we can help each other read some of those books we’ve all been intending to read.

2022 TBR Buster Challenge
I am participating in the 2022 TBR Buster Challenge by @bookbandit! I have selected 8 titles which have been on my shelves for over a year.
1. The Thousandth Floor (1), Katharine McGee
2. The Dazzling Heights (2), Katharine McGee
3. The Towering Sky (3), Katharine McGee
I severely disliked American Royals by Katharine McGee. I have no plans to read the rest of the American Royals trilogy which is, as far as I am concerned, a royal waste of time (pun intended). However, The Thousandth Floor trilogy has been on my shelves for years, so I feel obligated to read it (or at least try to).
4. Renegades (1), Marisa Meyer
5. Archenemies (2), Marisa Meyer
6. Supernova (3), Marisa Meyer
I liked the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer as well as Heartless. Gilded, their newest release, is on my TBR, so I feel that it is time to finally read the Renegades trilogy!
7. Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas
I loved both The Hate U Give and On the Come Up by Angie Thomas, so I am excited to read Concrete Rose, their newest release!
8. Meet Cute by Nina LaCour, Sara Shepard, Nicola Yoon, Katie Cotugno, Huntley Fitzpatrick, Kass Morgan, Katharine McGee, Meredith Russo, Jocelyn Davies, Ibi Zoboi, Jennifer Armentrout, Emery Lord, Dhonielle Clayton, and Julie Murphy
I read Blackout, a collection of short stories featuring black romances by Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany D. Jackson, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, Nicola Yoon, last year, so I am curious to read another collection of short stories featuring “meet cute” romances.

Oh, Wilder Girls... I so wanted to love this book entirely. I loved the concept: a girls boarding school on an island cut off in quarantine because of a virus that has decimated the school's population, that has caused growths on those infected.
It was like a Resident Evil game crossed with Lord of the Flies. It was such a cool, horrific idea. But it felt like the writer just gave up 2/3 of the way through. Characters were introduced to not actually serve any purpose, the character motivations were confused, and the whole ending just felt underwhelming. Even basic things like the romantic relationship between two of the main characters was underdone. It was so frustrating.

"I mean, you don't have to care at all about music, there's no stakes involved in basically flitting through life without a favorite song or a favorite band, people do it all the time and lead full, satisfying lives and their funerals are well-attended by sad people. But if you do decide to care about music--and in Sierra's case, if you decide to care so much that you have to play music--then your whole life is changed. You're always on the hunt for the next best song." -Your Favorite Band Cannot Save You, Scotto Moore

Read this month: April 2022
Tumblr media
I did it, I finally continued with the Fallen Isle books! And it only took me four years to pick up this book. My white whale. And I read The Empire of Gold, which is also from my #tbrbusterchallenge list (and is quite intimidating due to its size). Another two down, 16 to go.
S.A. Chakraborty: The Empire of Gold
J. Meadows: As She Ascends
J. Fagerlung: Briefe an Moa (eARC)
N. Yang: The Black Tides of Heaven (reread)
E. Tribole, E. Resch: Intuitive Eating (audiobook)
In numbers, these are not too many books but in pages, I am only 64 short of 2.000 pages. This is quite the exeption. And again, I enjoyed all the books I picked up this month. Overall, I am quite happy.

I'm reading They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera, for @bookbandit 's TBR Buster Challenge and while I didn't love it in the beginning, it's starting to make an impact and I'm deperately hoping the title won't actually be the ending of the book 😅

Announcing the #tbrbusterchallenge2021
Given the overwhelming success of the past year, I have decided to launch the Second (Annual?) TBR Buster Challenge!
The goal of this challenge is simple: read the books that have been languishing on your TBR shelves.  Some of you may have impossibly long TBR lists. Some of you may have a TBR list that only includes a few books. Maybe you have a physical shelf stacked full of books. Or maybe it’s just an amorphous list that lives in some half forgotten corner of your mind. No matter where you fall on these spectrums, this challenge is for you!
The greatest part of this challenge in 2020 is that everyone was able to fit it to their needs. Some people issued their own personal challenges to focus on specific genres. Others just plucked the next book that interested them from their shelf. Some people plowed through their lists like they were on a ferocious mission. Others read only a handful of books. This challenge is designed to be flexible!
So why not give it a go? Bust your TBR shelf with me!
A Basic #tbrbusterchallenge2021 to Get Started
Read a minimum of one book per month that has been languishing on your shelf. Want a more ambitious challenge? How many books do you read per year on average? Try making half of the part of the #tbrbusterchallenge2021. Don’t have time to read one book per month? That’s okay, too! You can pop in and out of this challenge as it fits into your schedule, and everyone will be here to support you :)
Post about the books you read! I am hoping to post mini-reviews every month. Do what works best for you. In 2020, many people posted monthly roundups and that was great!  Do you like taking photos of your books? Post ‘em! Do you like book quotes? Post ‘em! Anything and everything is welcome!
Tag your posts with #bookbanditchallenge and #tbrbusterchallenge2021 so I can see them and show you some love!
My Personal Challenge
Like last year, I will be posting polls every month so that my followers and challenge participants can help pick which books I should be reading. This really helped me last year, and I can’t wait to see which books y’all pick off of my shelves. For a bit more accountability I have set up the monthly themes ahead of time.
January: Fantasy
February: Romance
March: Science Fiction
April: Middle Grade reads
May: Memoir May
June: Wrap-Up
July: Non-fiction
August: YA reads
September: Historical Fiction
October: LGBTQ reads
November: Contemporary Fiction
December: Wrap-Up
If you want, you can pick a book of your shelves that follows these themes!  (For those that may be new to this challenge, wrap-up is where I am realistic about my likelihood to hit a reading slump and use it to catch up on the top books everyone has selected in the preceding months.)
That’s it! Those are the rules. Hopefully, simple enough that everyone feels they can join in. Together we can help each other read some of those books we’ve all been intending to read.

At this point, I have to be a bit masochist to keep reading The Vampire Chronicles. But here I am, I've just started Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis.
