Reflection

First, I want to say thank you for giving me the opportunity to create a Commonplace Book. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done but at the same time it was extremely liberating. I am used to being super structured and singularly focused. By reading poems, short stories and a novel all at the same time I was somehow more engaged. Instead of having to write a critical essay in the traditional format, for the first time in my life I could write whatever I wanted. I have to admit this was a difficult adjustment. I kept feeling like I was doing something wrong. Personally I don’t journal or do creative writing and this was a little of both. Thanks.

After looking back at all my entries, one idea stands out that ties all the texts together and that is the idea that a person's ego can make or break them. Ego needs to be regulated. It is good to have self-esteem and importance but when people don’t learn from their mistakes, when they blame others, or feel superior then it becomes a problem. Strong characters require a big ego because it is what drives the storylines. If a person has a big ego it leads to conflict in relationships. For example, I think Victor had a huge ego. He struggles with Clerval, Elizabeth and his father. The need for dominance over the creature is a power struggle in which he loses. Anyone who isolates themself from friends and family because they are seeking fame and glory is just not cool. When Victor tries to play God he is going against nature and this overconfidence is his downfall.

When the writer in STET refuses to make changes she is boldly standing up for how she feels and what she believes but this also takes courage which stems from having a strong ego. Maybe people are afraid of AI because they are insecure with low self-esteem. Just like people at the grocery store who hate using the self-checkouts. Many don’t like it when the machine is bossy and tells them what to do. It’s pretty funny if you think about it but they do make some people nervous and agitated. When William Blake wrote about the streets of London, he was comparing people and being judgy. I think you have to have a big ego to lay blame on others, but like in the poem “Darkness,” it is people who are the biggest threat to humanity.

Ego also ties into some of the more personal things I wrote about in my commonplace book. The idea of attending TCAT and how much I enjoy building anything “in the zone” takes a bit of ego. Having a healthy ego allows people to overcome obstacles and that is a good thing because life is full of them. The alternative is that it can lead to their destruction just like Mary Shelley was showing us in Frankenstein.

Back when Marion first turned up, he was a prissy, flamboyant vamp who wore over the top frilled jackets with massive frilled cuffs and the like.

Over time, he has developed into a more three-dimensional man. He has his needs, his wants and he knows what they are.

He has a dress style that is not so obnoxious now, though i will still see some frilly things and think “yeah man that’s so marion, you’re killin’ it!”.

I’m so pleased with how things are going, Originally, this story started more or less with knell already having met marion, but i felt it was important to unravel that.

Why is knell like that? why is marion like that?

There’s so much I want to say but almost all of it breaches spoiler territory. I’m incredibly thankful to @kainissoable for all their support and behind the scenes proofreading. What’s been more important than just proofreading is pointing out themes and subtexts, which has been such a massive part of this whole endeavor.

They say for your first piece of writing, keep it short and simple.

That was the original plan. Scenes emerge and rewrite themselves, themes I wasn’t previously aware of fall into place and ties everything together.

I had an anon earlier say they were enjoying it and that feels really good, I want people to be invested in these lads and their lives and i completely understand why anyone wouldn’t. Yes this takes place in nosgoth, but there are locations that are not on Nosgoths map that are mentioned, or things happen within- allowing for more fleshing out of the world and allowing Nosgoth to be as big as it should be.

Whilst everything is within Nosgoth, very little takes place directly with the Lieutenants, they’re eluded to or mentioned- but they’re the equivalent to the government when you’re watching a film about some rowdy boys in a pub.

They exist, but have no real bearing on the story. I’m so much more interested in the actual world of ‘Kain’s Empire Era Nosgoth’. We never saw it and I fear it’s been two decades too many to go back to it in a way that could possibly satisfy our hopes in terms of official media.

I’ve had friends say that they haven’t gotten around to reading TCatS(thats a bad anacronym) but still show support which is rad and yet at the same time, there’s a part of me that wants to push people away from it- not through any sort of shame, but it’s as if i’m inviting people to come and look at the seed i just put in the pot, and not the tree it will be down the line (if that’s not too pretentious sounding? but it’s the metaphor that feels right).

This has gone on a bit longer than i intended, but i suppose the message is this, and it’s the message that got me to start this whole thing up.

If you cant find the media you want to consume,then you have to be the one to create it.

arrived at tokyo, november 2019 - day 1.

late november last year, i finally stepped foot in japan once again.. i missed this country so much, the memories, the friends, the food, the culture.. everything is just so lovely and it has been way too long.

i arrived at narita international airport in the evening and took the airport limousine bus to tokyo city air terminal (tcat), where my friend is waiting. this time, she has so kindly offered her new home for me to stay over during my trip and it’s just in the neighborhood. taking the bus is very simple and effortless, and finally, i get to meet my best friend once again.. the weather is warmer than i expected though.

after leaving my luggage at her home, we proceed to visit the winter illumination light up at yebisu garden palace 恵比寿ガーデンプレイス. there’s a big christmas tree right in front and a very very beautiful chandelier at the other end of the walking path. the chandelier is put up every single, so it is kinda iconic and the lights are pretty, creating the romantic ambiance in the area.

after taking some photos, it’s time to visit my favorite and the best gyoza place ever, ebisu no yasubee えびすの安兵衛. this cozy izakaya is a place my friends and i found a few years ago, and it has been a place we return so often whenever we are in tokyo. we ordered all our favorite dishes, including both fried and soup gyoza, and the orange みかん cocktail. managed to catch up a lot with each other while eating our favorite food, it just felt like home. ただいまー!

we were totally stuffed by the time we leave the izakaya, we ordered so much haha.. and i really really love how good the dumplings are all the side dishes are, it’s just yummy, appetizing and always have a special place in my heart. my friend and i then walked to the station, took a train and eventually reach home. she introduced me around her place, it was so nice and so comfortable. i’m so grateful that she offered to host me during my trip. and we got to catch up with each other so much..

Tyrian and TCat: Chapter 2: The solitary life of a ranger and his friend

Tyrian did not take to the forest as well as he thought he might. The first few days where difficult, full of tough lessoned learned and cold nights lived. For the first few months it was just Tyrian and Thundercat, living in the forest hunting for food and living life the best they could. Tyrian established the forest was not in Neverwinter, it was in an entirely different part of the world. The animals where different, there were no dragons and the weather was not as erratic as he was used to. He travelled for weeks within this forest never finding anyone, though he wasn’t trying to make it to a particular destination. That is of course until he met his family, and his true life began. Tyrian started his day like he had for weeks previously setting up his traps. As he began to relax, having prepped everything he needed, he heard a sharp cry in the distance. This cry was not that of an animal as he was expecting but instead was of a young female voice. Tyrian leaping to his feet began to run into the forest towards the source of the noise, breaking out into a clearing to see nothing. No trap as he had setup and no young female human to create the noise, nothing. Seconds later he began to feel less as something cracks him on the back of the head and his senses go dark.

His consciousness hazy but returning some time later, he feels the ground scrape his back. Coming back to the world he feels the pull on his legs as he is being carried through the forest. Going into panic mode he realises he cannot move, tied and gagged, he looks around for anything to help him. To his left is a young female human, 5ft tall and brown haired, tied into a bun. She wears leather armour cobbled together a bow on her back. The girl looks around 14 years old and is clearly following the instruction of the man pulling Tyrians legs. The man seems much older, bearded and with long hair in a trail down his back. His large form at over 6ft tall is held within high quality leather armour, also carrying a bow on his back. In a panic Tyrian looks around to find Thundercat, what have they done to him. Surprisingly Thundercat is walking at Tyrians side calmly pottering along managing to keep up even through the underbrush that’s almost his height. Since the days of leaving his parents Tyrian had continued to hear the inclinations of speech in his mind from Thundercat and is even starting to believe it might not be him going mad.

“What’s happening, have they hurt you” Spoke Tyrian in his mind, hoping for a response. “They aren’t going to hurt us they just need to be sure you won’t attack them, they told me so” replied Thundercat proudly, having handled the situation, his nose going high in pride. “What do you mean they told you, they can talk to you?!”, said Tryian in shock. Announcing to the world, Thundercat speaks “Quilin, He is awake, can we talk to him now?”, “Quillin?” thought Tyrian. At Thundercats words in his head the large man at the front stops and turns to face Tyrian, the large form he had seen is not mirrored in the mans face. He has soft features and a smile that instantly puts Tyrian at ease. “Now your little friend here says you won’t attack us, and the fact you have the little guy makes me think that’s true, but we need to talk before I let you go”. Quillin’s voice is deep but calming and the angry man he had thought him a few moments before now seemed silly. The awkward silence between them is cut short by a little high pitched voice from the side. “Hey stop talking in your heads you know I can’t hear that, it makes me sad!”. Tyrian trying to take this all in looks over to see the young girl looking annoyed stood next to him. Quillin speaks up “Sorry Cassandra, I shall move to my outside voice, you will get it one day. So Tyrian isn’t it? You have been living in these woods for a few months now, I’m surprised we haven’t bumped into each other before now”. Still reeling from the situation Tyrian only manages to get out a short response, “Yeah……. Who are you?”. “We are just two people who live out here” replied Quillin, “Your very young to be travelling alone, what happened to your parents?”. Tyrian looked to the floor not wishing to discuss the situation that was somewhat still painful. “I see, no need to explain, maybe instead I can tell you about how I met Cassandra?” said Quillin. Tyrian just nodded and continue to listen, simply happy to not be in mortal danger.

“I was a hunter for a load of elves, they made magic items to sell and I got food for them. For a long time I was happy with that life and I even got to make some magic of my own. I developed some of the best spells for hunters in my time but it was not fulfilling at all. The elves wouldn’t help anyone who asked and money drove everything they ever did. We got word that a local village was under attack from orcs and I wanted to go help, they told me if I did there is no point returning. So I went. Never returned to them, without looking back I knew it was worth it. I was too late though and almost the entire village was burned to the ground. The only one I could find alive was Cassandra, hiding as her mother told her. I have looked after her ever since, its been what, 3 years now?”

“Yep! 3 years and now I am an awesome ranger like Dad” shouted Cassandra in response. “Well since then I have travelled the forests training her in the ways of hunters and in my magics. I hope one day she will go off and help others in a way I should have been for my entire life”. Seeing how open Quillin was being, Tyrian was sure he was telling the truth and wanted to return with his own story.

“My parents dumped me here for not living up to their expectations. I wanted to play with my animals and they wanted me to learn sword fighting and talk to nobles. I guess they decided I was a lost cause and wanted me gone so my sister could take over instead of me”. Tyrian grows dark giving his solemn answer, both Cassandra and Quilin’s heads look to the floor for a second, a silence hits the impromptu camp. “So are we a part of your hunting party now” said Thundercat excitedly, “We aren’t very good at it on our own, Tyrian could hit targets, but things move and he misses”. Quilin turning to Cassandra speaks “What do you think? Do we have room for them in our little family”. Cassandra looks to have seen a ghost, staring at the panther pup sat in the forest. “I heard that! Yes I want to keep talking to Thundercat! I can finally talk to animals!”. Cassandra and Thundercat walking off and talking, Quilin walks over to untie Tyrian. Quilin’s face becomes dark for a moment as he speaks under his breath “I am going to trust you, but if you decide it would be a good idea to harm the girl, I will ensure you do not take another breath, are we clear?”. Tyrian nods in response just happy to finally have company in this forest after months of isolation. Not knowing what this means but being sure he is happy to have friends again, Tyrian stands ready to start this new chapter in his life.
