Learn Ya || Chapter 9
Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8
Author Notes: SURPRISE SHAWTY. Shout out to everyone that lowkey bullied me into continuing this fic some three years later. I love y’all for that. I kept the same tag list as before so if you no longer wish to be tagged, just let me know.
Amaya felt like her whole world had come crashing down in a matter of seconds.
She’d had her life planned out from the time that she was a young girl, and now all of those plans had gone astray. She could understand that her mother’s job was having financial issues and there needed to be cut backs as far as employees went. What she couldn’t understand was why her mother needed to be included in that. She sort of knew that she was being selfish about her true reasoning for caring that her mother lost her job, but she couldn’t help it. Her entire world had just been flipped on its head.
She couldn’t afford school anymore. The financial aid she had been given didn’t cover the complete cost of her first year. Her mother was going to cover the difference so that Amaya didn’t have to worry about the financial strain of school and could solely focus on making sure she made the best grades that she could. She was even going to cut back on the hours she worked at the centre to give her all to her academics.
That wasn’t the case anymore.
She had to come up with the money in a very short amount of time and she had really only two options as far as she was concerned because deferring a year simply wasn’t going to work for her.
She could either work more hours at the centre to get the money to pay the difference or she could take out student loans. Honestly, neither of them were stellar options, but she was heavily leaning towards the student loans. It would give her the money she needed right in that moment and she could deal with the fall out to her credit score and paying it back later in life. All she wanted to do was go to law school. How she did it really didn’t matter to her anymore.
“Is everything alright, Amaya? You have been unusually quiet tonight?”
She looked up from the plate of food she had been toying around with the last few minutes, pushing around bits of mashed potatoes across the ceramic, and saw T’Challa looking at her. Concern was etched into his features, brows sitting low on his face and his full lips pulled down into a soft frown.
She really should have canceled their date but she hadn’t been able to bring herself to do that. It had been a few weeks since she had last seen him and she knew he was a busy man. Though, she supposed canceling would’ve been better than going and being in a sour mood the entire night.
“Yeah, everything is fine.” She did her best to put on the most convincing smile but the look that he gave her showed that it didn’t work in her favor.
“I do not appreciate being lied to.” The frown was still etched on his face but his voice was soft, almost as if he didn’t want to scare her.
Amaya pulled her bottom lip between her teeth and let out a small breath through her nose. She certainly hadn’t meant to lie to him but she wasn’t sure if they were at the stage where she could dump all of her issues onto him. Everything up until that point had been lighthearted and fun so it was hard to say if he truly even wanted to know. She allowed silence to settle between the two of them as she continued to push around food on her plate, lost in her thoughts. It might be good to talk to someone who could provide an outside prospect of things, and he might even have some sort of sage advice to give to her.
“No, really everything is fine,” she had every intention of leaving it at that but the way he lifted one brow let her know that it wasn’t going to fly a second time. “My mother lost her job and now I’m trying to figure out how to pay for law school.”
She hadn’t really said those words out loud. Other people might have said them to her, Charlie or her brother, and she might have thought them on more than one occasion, but the words had never once left her mouth. Not even when her mother had sat her down and told her the whole truth. Saying the words out loud would only make the reality of her situation settle in, making it that much harder for her to try and deny the truth. She had hoped that if she simply just remained positive then maybe things would work themselves out, but with each passing day, she could see that a positive attitude wasn’t going to work and that very same attitude diminished and made way for a more negative one.
When his hand moved across the table, she didn’t hesitate to slip her into his. Regardless of whatever mood she was in, her body sought out the physical comfort from him because there was something about his presence that had been nothing but soothing for her, even in the times he made her heart stutter in her chest.
“How much is your balance?”
“A lot.”
“How much is a lot?”
“$19,980. I gave them $20 so they would stop calling me for a few days but really I just think the lady felt bad for me when I started crying on the phone. Half of that needs to be paid by the end of next week.” Again, she had thought about her situation plenty of times but saying it out loud only made it that much more daunting for her.
“I will take care of it.” His tone was so final as he squeezed her hand.
“T’Challa, no. I can’t ask you to do that.” The very last thing she wanted him to think was that she had only told him in hopes that he would pay for it.
“It is a good thing you are not asking and I am offering.”
“I mean I get that but I’m still saying no.”
“It is also a good thing I am not seeking your permission on this.”
Amaya rolled her eyes and kissed her teeth. “Now is not the time to be playing that little game where you need to have control over everything. This is serious and it’s too much money for you to pay and I can’t pay you back,”
“You will not need to pay me back. Consider it an early graduation gift if that will help you feel better about accepting the money.”
“I don’t need you to do that. I can figure something out.” She made a face and could start to feel herself get defensive.
The logical part of her knew that he was only doing this out of the kindness of his heart and not because he thought she couldn’t do it on her own (which they both know that she couldn’t). But there was also some jaded part of her that felt like he was doing it because he expected something in return. Sex maybe.
Of course there had been indications that the two of them were sexually attracted to each other, anyone on the outside looking in could see that, but he hadn’t given her any reason to believe that was the one and only thing that he was after. It was yet another thing she had to remind herself that set him apart from the men she had dealt with in the past. Particularly Rod.
“Come here.” A frown had once again settled onto his face as she pulled her hand away from his.
“You can’t just distract me with whatever you’re going to try and do.”
“Amaya,” her name was a rough warning on his tongue that she felt right between her thighs. What was wrong with her that him being even a little stern with her was making her wet? “Come here. I won’t tell you again.”
She watched as he pushed his chair away from the table a little bit. Any other time she would’ve pushed the boundaries a little bit more, trying to see just how much she was able to get away with, but she didn’t have the energy. She mirrored his actions and stood up from her own chair, rounding the table to stand in front of him. She wasn’t standing long before she found herself being pulled down into his lap.
A shuddering breath left her lips when a large hand rested against the bit of thigh exposed by her dress. A distraction and damn if it wasn’t working.
“Why is it so hard for you to accept my help?” She could barely think with the way his thumb traced back and forth across her skin.
“Because I don’t want you thinking I told you so you would help me.”
“If you are going to be someone in my life then you should expect to be taken care of in all aspects of your life, Amaya.” She had to admit that he did have a way with words but she could tell that he wasn’t just saying them for show. He meant them.
“I don’t think I know how to let people do things like this for me.” Amaya prided herself on being an independent woman. Of course, her mother and her family were there if and when she needed to help but no one outside of that circle really did anything to take care of her.
“I can teach you.”
————-
The rest of the dinner had placed Amaya in much better spirits and a lot of that was due in part to T’Challa keeping her in his lap with an arm wrapped around her waist as he held her close. The two of them fell back into their usual back and forth banter with ease. It was nice to not have to worry about whether or not she was going to be able to attend school or not.
She had never been so grateful to be called into work on a random Tuesday morning. Without that, she would’ve never met him and she would currently be shit out luck, probably forced to drop out of school because Rod certainly didn’t have an odd $20,000 laying around to help her out.
She still hadn’t agreed to let him pay for her first year but she also wasn’t fighting him on it either. She would sleep on it for a few days, telling him she would give him an answer in a few days time. He had been reluctant but he agreed, albeit begrudgingly.
The night was coming to a close and she felt an almost loss at knowing that he would be leaving in the morning and hadn’t really given her a time frame on when he would be back.
Her key twisted in the lock of her front door but she didn’t open it. Instead, she cleared her throat and mustered up all of her courage, putting on her proverbial big girl panties as she turned to look at him. “Did you want to…I don’t know like come in or something?”
Even in trying to make it sound like no big deal, her voice cracked.
“I would love to but I do fly out early tomorrow morning.” She was happy that he sounded sad about the fact but she had no intention of letting up.
“I know I know. It’s just Charlie isn’t home and I really don’t wanna be home alone, Sir.” She rocked back and forth from one foot to the other, looking up at him with what she could only hope was a look of helplessness.
T’Challa made a soft sound like a hum as he hooked his finger underneath her chin. “You call me that and think I’m just supposed to give in to you whatever you want.”
“I do.”
“I could tell you no right now. Don’t forget that, Amaya.” Despite the half grin forming on his lips, he gripped her chin a little tighter.
“I know you could, but do you wanna know what I think?” His fingers left her chin in order for his hand to cup the side of her face. Her body wasted no time leaning into his touch.
“Enlighten me, beautiful.”
“I think you don’t want to say no. I think you want to come in as much as I want you to come in. You just wanna play hard to get.” She reached behind her and opened her front door.
“I’m playing hard to get?” He chuckled softly as his brows lifted.
“Mhmm,” she nodded. “You definitely are and you need to cut it out before it gets you in trouble.”
She took one step back and then another, finding that he was following her back into her apartment. The way kept his eyes on her as he pulled her keys from the door and kicked it closed before flipping the lock, had her chewing on the inside of her cheek. She found that she loved having his attention solely on her.
“You and your mouth.” His thumb ran across her bottom lip and it took every ounce of strength that she had to resist the urge to pull the digit into her mouth. “Always pushing your limits.”
“You like it or else you would’ve made it so I couldn’t sit down for a week by now.”
“The night is still young.”
Taking his hand from the side of her face, she wrapped her fingers around his wrist to guide him to her bedroom. The voice in the back of head was telling her that she needed to get herself under control.  She hadn’t invited him up because she wanted to jump his bones. She really had invited him because she didn’t want to be alone for the night, and she wanted to spend what little time she did have left with him.
When she pushed open the door to her bedroom, she was grateful that she had cleaned up some before she left. Any other time, her room would have been in shambles with clothes and shoes thrown all over the place in her attempt to find something suitable to wear. Instead, it was just the small desk in the corner of her room that was a mess with books and papers haphazardly thrown across the top, and her bed that she had forgotten to make.
Her room was small and his large presence made it seem that much smaller.
“I’m gonna get changed but could you unzip my dress for me?” She could easily reach the zipper herself but that didn’t mean she couldn’t have a little fun. When she turned and pulled her braids over her shoulder, she felt his presence behind her.
T’Challa said nothing as one hand ghosted up her arm and the other wrapped around the small zipper and pulled it down slowly. Amaya swore her heart felt like it was about to explode out of her chest and it didn’t get any better when she felt his lips trail along the skin of her shoulder. She inhaled sharply. His fingers pushed down the thin straps of her dress and her hands instinctively came up to hold the dress in place before it hit the ground.
She talked a big game and had no problem teasing him but she wasn’t so sure that she wanted to drop her dress and stand in front of him in just a pair of panties just yet.
When his lips pressed the shell of her ear, her eyes fluttered and she let out a small sound despite her best efforts to remain calm. It had been far too long since someone had touched her, played with her body until her mind went fuzzy and she couldn’t think, and it showed.
“Go change before I forget that I would like to be a gentleman tonight.”
She wondered what might happen if she told him she didn’t want him to be a gentleman, but something was telling her that she wasn’t quite ready for that. T’Challa seemed like a man who knew exactly what he was doing with far more years of experience than she had. She didn’t want to write a check that her ass couldn’t cash.
“Right,” she nodded her head and stepped away from him.
She practically scurried out of the room with her pajamas in hand. She knew if she had stayed in her bedroom for one second longer, she would have easily given in to the x rated thoughts that had been swarming in her head. The magnetic pull that man had over her body was insane. Scary. Thrilling. And more than just a little erotic.
She had never wanted to fuck someone so badly in her life. It was to the point that if he asked, she would be hard pressed to say no, but she truly did what to take things slow with him. She wanted to be sure that they had something that went beyond just the very apparent physical connection and attraction.
And she didn’t want him to think she was a whore.
Amaya used her night time routine as a means to distract herself, probably taking far longer than she needed to, but she needed to give her body all the time that it needed to cool down. By the time she had gone through the steps, her body was still on edge but only just barely. She was sure she would be able to keep her hormones in check.
Or so she had thought before she stepped back into her bedroom to see T’Challa sitting up against her pillows with her civil procedures book in his hand. It would have been fine for her, nothing she wouldn’t have been able to handle if he hadn’t stripped down to his boxer briefs and nothing else. .
This man was going to be the death of her.
“You just made yourself right at home I see.” She gave him a pointed look before she shoved her clothes into her hamper. She just needed to distract and deflect so nothing got out of hand.
“Well, you can only leave a man to his own devices for so long before he starts to get bored.” The smirk he gave her when he looked up from the book had her grinning back at him like an idiot.
“I see that.” She rolled her eyes as she walked over to him and pulled the book from his hands. “I don’t think this is how you want to cure your boredom though.”
“Do you have any suggestions then?”
“I have a few, but you have to leave so early in the morning and I would hate to keep you up all night, y’know?” She pressed her lips together to keep from smiling as he laughed.
She dropped the book back off on her desk before she flopped down on her back onto her bed.
“Lay down before your mouth lands you into some trouble you can’t handle, Amaya.” He shook his head.
She had no doubt that she would find herself getting into some trouble at some point with him but tonight wasn’t going to be the night for that. Crawling into bed, she laid on her side with a hand curled underneath her chin so she could face him. He wasted no time in mirroring her actions minus the hand under his chin.
“Do you know when you might be able to come back?”
“Unfortunately, no I don’t. There are quite a few things back home that I will need to take care of before I can get away again.” His hand reached out and his thumb moved along her cheek.
She figured that he was a busy man but she’d had a sliver of hope that he would be back sooner rather than later. It was getting harder and harder each time to only have an afternoon or a few hours a night with him at a time before he disappeared for an extended period of times. Phone calls could only do so much.
She really did like having him around.
“Don’t look so sad,” she wasn’t aware that she had started to frown until he pointed it out. “I’ll still make sure to call you every day.”
“Don’t get me wrong, it is nice hearing from you every day but actually seeing you more often would be even better.” She shrugged her shoulders and toyed with the ring that hung from the chain around his neck. When she looked up there was something of a smug smile on his lips. “What?”
“If I didn’t know any better I would think you had a thing for me.”
“You’re alright I guess.” She rolled her eyes playfully.
“Oh I’m just alright? I guess I should go somewhere where I will be appreciated then.” He started to roll over to get out of bed before she caught his arm.
She pressed her body into his and buried her face into his chest, inhaling his scent gently. “Don’t go.”
His arms wrapped around her tightly, holding her close, as he pressed a gentle kiss to the top of her head.
“I’m right here, baby girl.”

Wakanda's Princess
Nakia's pregnant with T'Challa's daughter. What will these two do with the new princess?
Tumblr media
Chapter 4: Celebrations and Worries
A year later after the airport fight, Nakia had disappeared and T'Kia felt more and more distant toward the woman.
She wasn't often there to see her daughter grow as she let the Dora Milaje raise her.
It upset T'Kia but not as much. She had her Aunt Shuri and Okoye and her grandmother, after all. Nakia trusted Okoye to treat the girl like family and so she did.
Speaking of Okoye, T'Challa finally decided to let the girl come with him on a mission since his general would be accompanying them. T'Kia couldn't argue much on that.
The only downside, the general was taking them to see T'Kia's mother who was being held captive.
It irritated T'Kia. She trained for so long as a spy to get captured?? What was the point of missing out on so much of her life if she'd let something as a measly kidnapping get to her?
"My Prince... coming up on them now.", Okoye announces, bringing the princess out of her thoughts.
T'Challa's face slowly grows into a smile. He had missed his lover despite their falling out. Unlike T'Kia, the man had full faith in Nakia and her actions. Though, if she needed a little help, who was he to say no?
"No need, Okoye. I can handle this alone. I will get Nakia out as quickly as possible.", he says.
"Just don't freeze when you see her.", Okoye warns.
He scoffs and looks at her. "What are you talking about? I never freeze."
T'Kia smiled as she and her father jumped out of the helicarrier and headed opposite ways, taking the captors out one by one.
T'Kia came across a commotion, hearing a familiar voice as she hid in a tree.
"T'Challa, no! This one's just a boy. He got kidnapped as well.", T'Kia looked down from a tree to see a woman dressed up like the captured ones.
Was that her mother....?
T'Challa indeed froze, his heart stuttering at the sight of his lover.
"Nakia... I... I wanted...", he started, walking over to her. Suddenly a guard stood, pointing a gun at them. "Hey! I have her! Don't move! I will shoot! I will shoot her right now!"
T'Kia frowned and dropped down from the tree, kicking the  guard in the back as Okoye knocked him out. They nodded at each other before they walked up to him.
"You froze.", Okoye scolded the prince.
"Ah...", T'Challa looks down, flustered.
Nakia watched as her daughter shook her head at her father and caught her eyes.
She was silent. "T'Kia....", Nakia started, but the girl stayed by her father.
Nakia shook her head, turning to the man instead. "Why are you here? You've ruined my mission.", she told T'Challa.
"My father is dead, Nakia. Remember? I will be crowned king tomorrow and I wish for you to be there.", he explains.
She sighed and looked at the man before looking at her daughter. T'Kia only glared back. She wouldn't have cared if the woman missed out on her accomplishments at the moment, but this was a big thing that was happening.
Her father was going to be crowned king tomorrow. She needed to be there. She'd drag the woman there if she had to.
Nakia sighed. "Fine. I will come.", she says and looks at the captured women. "Carry yourselves home now."
"Thank you.", one of them spoke up. "And take the boy. Get him to his people.", Nakia orders. "You will speak nothing of this day."
The women nodded, grabbing hold of the captured boy. "Yes. Thank you. Thank you."
The Wakandans all climb back on the helicarrier after letting them go.
T'Kia stood by Okoye as her mother and father talked. Okoye noticed the princess's behavior toward the spy.
She… felt bad. She remembered years of the girl asking where her mother was and when she'd be back. Okoye could only promise that it'd be soon every time.
Eventually, that wouldn't have slid past the girl. Seems now it wouldn't have worked anyways. The girl had gotten old enough to understand.
The two warriors watched as the sun rose, the light kissing their skin with a warmth they knew so well.
Okoye smiled. "Sister Nakia... My Prince...", she looked at T'Kia who seemed to be half asleep. "Princess. We are home."
"This never gets old.", T'Challa mutters in amazement.
As they landed on the launchpad, they climbed out of the helicarrier approaching Queen Ramonda and Shuri.
"Queen Mother... Shuri... My comfort for your loss.", Nakia speaks up.
"Thank you, Nakia. It is so good to have you back with us. Take her to the River Province.", Queen Ramonda says and looks at her granddaughter with a sweet smile.
The girl was tired and needed rest soon but fought her sleep with irritation. Queen Ramonda easily brought the girl in her arms as Okoye had Nakia ushered off to get comfortable.
Shuri smirks suddenly, watching her brother's gaze.
"Did he freeze?", Shuri asks Okoye, making T'Kia smile at her.
Okoye's smile widened, "Like an antelope in headlights.", Okoye says, egging her on.
The women laugh at him as he crosses his arms as he looks at his general whose grin never leaves her face.
"Are you finished?", he asks, fed up and watches as the Dora Milaje walks away.
He shakes his head and looks at Shuri. "So surprised my little sister came to see me off before our big day."
She scoffs. "You wish! I'm here for the EMP beads. I've developed an update."
"Update? No.", he says, shaking his head fast. "It worked perfectly."
"How many times do I have to teach you? Just because something works doesn't mean that it cannot be improved.", she says.
"You are teaching me? What do you know?", he asks, taking off his beads and handing them to her.
"More than you.", she boasts and walks off.
T'Challa shakes his head as he watches his baby sister walk away. "I can't wait to see what kind of update you make... to your ceremonial outfit.", he calls, and she flips him off.
Both T'Challa and T'Kia's jaws drop, making Queen Ramonda scold her daughter. "Shuri!", she warns. "Sorry, Mother!", Shuri apologizes.
"How are you feeling today, Mama?", T'Challa asks, smiling.
"Proud. Your father and I would talk about this day all the time. He is with us…", she glanced at the young princess. "All of us. And it is your time to be king.", she says.
Despite the early morning, the time for celebration came. Shuri made sure T'Kia had her correct tribal ceremonial clothing on before it started, her excitement bouncing off of the girl.
The time for celebration was among them and celebrate, they did. The chants, the music, the dancing and smiles excited T'Kia and filled her with warmth.
She never got to be a part of something like this before, let alone smile so much, now knowing she'd be a big part of her father's life.
As they made it to the watery cliffs, Shuri and T'Kia stood by Queen Ramonda waiting for T'Challa to arrive.
Once he did, Zuri held the Spear of Bashenga, calling to the audience. "I, Zuri, Son of Badu, give to you, Prince T'Challa! The Black Panther!", he announced.
The Elders watch as Zuri holds up a ceremonial vessel containing a mysterious concoction that T'Kia had never seen.
"The prince will now have the strength of the Black Panther stripped away.", Zuri explains and pours the liquid into T'Challa's mouth.
T'Challa reacts violently, nearly choking on the red fluid. He spasms, his veins expanding and his muscles contracting as the poisonous liquid expands through his body.
T'Kia looked at her aunt and grandmother in worry, but they gave her reassuring looks in return. The prince's eyes become red before he calms, his trembling coming to a stop, and he exhales as he stands.
Pleased, Zuri turns to the audience. "Damaku!"
"The Border Tribe will not challenge today.", others yell.
The crowd repeats. "Damaku!"
"Victory in ritual combat comes by yield or death. If any tribe wishes to put forth a warrior, I now offer a path to the throne.", Zuri exclaims.
The Merchant Tribe Warrior calls out, "The Merchant Tribe will not challenge today."
"Yibambe!", Nakia yelled, receiving the same chant in return.
"The River Tribe will not challenge today!", the River elder announced.
"The Mining Tribe will not challenge today.", the mining elder announced.
"Is there any member of royal blood... who wishes to challenge for the throne?", Zuri asked.
Shuri raised her hand, making everyone look at her in shock.
"This corset is really uncomfortable... so could we all just wrap it up and go home?", Shuri says, clapping. T'Kia shakes her head as Queen Ramonda pinches Shuri in exasperation. "Mother!", Shuri whines.
T'Challa, amused, shakes his head at his sister's antics before pausing as he and the others hear a familiar chant.
"Are they Jabari?", Shuri asks. "Yes.", Queen Mother responds. T'Kia frowned. She'd heard of the Jabari, but never got close to seeing any of them.
A huge man with a monkey skull over his face enters from the darkness.
"M'Baku, what are you doing here?", Zuri asks.
He shrugs with a tilt of his head. "It's Challenge Day. We have watched... and listened from the mountains! We have watched with disgust... as your technological advancements have been overseen by a child!", he yells pointing at Shuri, making the Dora Milaje and T'Kia step in front of her.
M'Baku's head tilts once more in curiosity as he looks at the girl who glared back at the man. "New. You're new. And younger.", he turns to the Queen. "Are you allowing children to fight now?"
Queen Ramonda doesn't say anything before T'Challa steps up. "Address me, not my mother.", he says, making the taller man turn to him.
The warning look in his eyes sends a message that M'Baku caught onto quickly. A laugh escapes him as he looks back at the girl.
"You're the child.", he says, another laugh ripping from his gut.
He continues, "Your technological advancements have been overseen by a child. Who scoffs at tradition!", he finishes, as his newfound irritation rises again before he turns to the prince.
"And now you want to hand the nation over to this prince...", he says, standing over T'Challa. "Who could not keep his own father safe. Mmm? We will not have it. I said, we will not have it, oh! I, M'Baku... leader of the Jabari..."
"I accept your challenge, M'Baku.", T'Challa cuts him off.
M'Baku's shoulders square back. "Glory to Hanuman."
They've already started their fighting and M'baku kicks T'Challa down after so many impacts.
Through the loud drumming, M'Baku yells, "Stand up!"
"Where is your god now!?", he shouts.
T'Challa gets up and gives him an over kick. He punches M'Baku in his sides as M'Baku swings aimlessly.
"Yes!", Nakia and T'Kia cheer.
M'Baku takes his staff and picks up T'Challa with it, crushing him with his bare weight. T'Challa is now bleeding from his face, almost dizzy and tired.
"No powers!", M'Baku headbutts him. "No claws!" He gives him another. "No special suit! Just a boy!"
T'Challa's head dangles back and catches T'Kia's glossy eyes.
"Tell him who you are!!", his mother yells.
T'Challa quickly leans up to punch M'Baku back. T'Kia cheered on in hope as he cracked open M'Baku's mask.
M'Baku, shocked at the sight of blood coming from his own face, screams in anger and stabs T'Challa right where his heart should be, leaving the Udaku family in shock.
T'Challa's eyes widen as he shouts in pain, gripping onto the staff.
"Baba!!", T'Kia rushes to move, but Shuri holds her back.
T'Challa takes a quick glance at his daughter before glaring at M'Baku, his bloody teeth gritting. "I am Prince T'Challa... son of King T'Chaka!!", he yells.
"You can do this, T'Challa!", Shuri yells.
T'Challa pulls out the pointed edge and dodges as M'Baku swings to stab him again, kicking him into the water.
He wraps his legs around his neck, bringing him closer to the edge of the cliff.
"Yes!", T'Kia cheered.
"Come on!", Nakia yells.
"Yield! Don't make me kill you!", T'Challa yells as M'Baku's face swells with the lack of oxygen.
"I'd rather die!", M'Baku yells.
Others start chanting T'Challa's name.
"You have fought with honor. Now, yield! Your people need you.", he says. Worry almost wracks T'Challa's body. Was M'Baku really going to let his pride in the way of living? M'Baku glances at his own warriors.
"Yield, man!", T'Challa yells. Cheers erupt as M'Baku taps out.
T'Kia sighs in relief and smiles at her father as he stands, watching as the Jabari warriors pull the bigger man up.
Zuri walks over to him. "I now present to you, King T'Challa. The Black Panther."
T'Challa nods to him. "Zuri."
"My King.", he only nods back.
"Wakanda Forever!!", the tribes yell simultaneously.
T'Challa is moved on to the Hall of Kings, an ancient place that represented the past kings of Wakanda.
He watches as his daughter's eyes sparkle with wonder. How long had this been here, she thought.
The place was huge.
As they stopped, T'Challa was placed onto the red soil, ready to be buried. T'Kia kneels by his head as he gives her a smile of reassurance.
Zuri walks up, his hands holding the liquidized herd.
"Allow the Heart-Shaped Herb... to restore the powers of the Black Panther... and take you to the Ancestral Plane." Zuri feeds him the fluid of the herb.
T'Challa's body shivers as he lets out a groan, swallowing the liquid.
"T'Chaka, we call on you. Come here to your son.", Zuri calls. The crowd watches as T'Challa's veins pulsate throughout his body.
T'Challa's eyes shut and pop open as he wakes up in a grassy plain, with the sky a purple-ish hue. It was beautiful, almost cold. He felt… free.
He heard a familiar voice behind him, a laugh following the voice. He turned around to see his father smiling at him proudly.
"Baba."
"My son.", T'Chaka responds. T'Challa quickly kneeled in front of him.
"Stand.", T'Chaka says. "You are a King now."
T'Challa looks up at him. A frown dropped his face as he shook his head and stood up, his head hanging low.
T'Chaka frowns as well, worried. "What's wrong, my son?", he asks.
"I am not ready.", T'Challa confesses.
He never imagined the sudden pressure of being king. It was happening and now he just wanted to run. To be what he used to be.
He always wondered how his father managed to do it. To balance and juggle responsibilities as if it was nothing.
"Have you not prepared to be King your whole life? Have you not trained and studied been by my side?"
T'Challa shook his head, clenching his fists. "I am not ready to be without you.", T'Challa says.
He frowns. "A man who has not prepared his children for his own death, has failed as a father. Have I ever failed you....?"
T'Challa looks up, a shocked expression crossing his face. "Never."
T'Chaka hugs his son in a warm hold he hasn't had in so long. T'Challa felt like a little boy again, scared and vulnerable.
He lets out a sigh. "Tell me how to protect Wakanda. To protect my family. My daughter. I want to be a great King, Baba. Just like you."
T'Chaka rubs his back. "You will struggle. That is inevitable. So you'll need to surround yourself with people you trust. You have your sister, your mother, your love, and...your daughter.", he says, making T'Challa eyes widen.
"You must prepare her like I did for you and your sister. You're a good man with a good heart. And it's hard for a good man to be king.", he says.
T'Challa suddenly jolted awake, out of breath as he felt someone pulled him up.
"Breathe, T'Challa. Breathe. Breathe.", Zuri tells him.
He takes calming deep breaths and looks around, smiling at T'Kia and Zuri who look at him worriedly.
"You're okay.", T'Kia says, more to her beating, worrying heart than him. She knew he'd be okay. He fought off poisoning and a stab close to the heart. He was strong.
"He was there.", T'Challa chuckled, as Zuri pulled him up. "He was there. My father."
T'Challa felt a bursting sense of confidence and took T'Kia to walk in the city once more with Nakia. He wanted to spend time with them as a family. He had his own family. It was still a little hard to get used to, knowing he was a father now.
He loved it.
T'Kia, however, didn't mind following along with her father. It was just her mother that was the problem.
Though, a conflicting thought crossed her mind. Maybe she was being childish for letting her feelings get the better of her. She shouldn't feel resentful toward her mother for not being around.
She was busy. Parents get busy. It happens.
She knew that, but…
"Come home, Nakia.", she hears her father say.
"I'm right here.", Nakia says, looking at T'Challa incredulously.
His eyes softened, pleading. "Stay."
"I came to support you and to honor your father, but I can't stay. I found my calling out there. I've seen too many in need just to turn a blind eye.", Nakia says, sighing.
T'Challa frowns, glancing back at his daughter who looked around, waving and smiling at other civilians before turning to his lover.
"Then, what about T'Kia? What about her? Will you stay for her?", T'Challa whispers.
Nakia frowns. "I just can't be happy here knowing that there's people out there who have nothing.", she says and glanced at T'Kia. "Besides, she hates me."
T'Challa looked at her in disbelief. "She does not."
Nakia fixes him a look. "You didn't see the look she gave me. She doesn't want to talk to me at the moment."
T'Challa frowns. He noticed, just chose not to say anything. It was true she hadn't been around, and maybe T'Kia missed her a lot, but after seeing her again, she must feel torn.
He shakes his head, moving on. "Then, what would you have Wakanda do about it?", he asks.
"Share what we have. We could provide aid...and access to technology and refuge to those who need it. Other countries do it, we could do it better.", Nakia says, enthusiastically.
"We are not like these other countries, Nakia. If the world found out what we truly are, what we possess, we could lose our way of life.", T'Challa says.
"For once, I agree.", T'Kia speaks up.
She didn't want to meet any colonizers right now, let alone trust them not to steal anything from her home.
She learned a lot from her aunt, seeing that Vibranium was being used for weapons outside of its native habitat and people. It wasn't right.
"Wakanda is strong enough to help others and protect ourselves at the same time.", Nakia argued.
T'Challa sighs and gives her a look. "If you were not so stubborn, you would make a great Queen."
"I would make a great Queen, because I am so stubborn.", Nakia counters, sassily.
"So, you admit it!", he exclaims.
"I did not say that."
T'Kia smiles to herself.

The others Avengers, cooler than OG part 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hope everyone is well, let me introduce some other Avengers
First, we have our favorite couple, they’re cute but also disgusting when they act like children, Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, Spiderman and Spider Gwen, the Spider couple like we call them. They are a little bit chaotic during missions, so they live together on the base to learn how to don’t let enemies goes away while they’re screaming at each other…
Second, the royalty of the Avengers, the king and the princess directly from Wakanda, T’Challa and Shuri, Black Panther and his sister. Shuri is the smartest girl you can imagine especially in new technologies, she knows everything. T’Challa inherited of the Black Panther role by his father, his costume is more like a huge black cat but, one of the kinds you don’t want to pet. As you can imagine, they can’t live on the base, but they come see us often.
Third, my queen, I want to be her. She is the strongest, the most badass woman you can imagine. Directly from Asgard, she is a Valkyrie (she wants to be call by this name, but her real name is Brunehilde), one of the strongest armies of Asgard before the battle against Hela (I will talk about her in another post), she flies on a winged white horse. She is one of the best knife users. She is now queen of the Asgard so she doesn’t have time to live with us, but she come when she have time.
Fourth, the chaotic wizard duo, really, they are supposed to be strongest sorcerer of all the time, but they are always fighting each other, Stephen Strange and Wong, Doctor Strange and the Supreme Sorcerer. Both trained by the Ancient One, they can be strong, powerful separately but even more together if they had ended battling for every little decision. They have to protect some temples, so we don’t see them often, we almost never see Wong, but sometimes, we see Strange, to teach us how to make portal, really fun.
Fiveth, to be honest, we don’t see her often, she lives with us, but she is scared by her own power so she stays aside, she has different training than everyone because we never see her in our training, Monica Rambeau, she is kinda the niece of Carol, the only thing I know about her power is that anything can cross her without killing her.
Sixth, youngest and newest Avenger, Kamala Khan, Miss Marvel. Her idol is Captain Marvel, the day she finally met her, she almost passes out. She absolutely can’t control her power, she wants, really, but she can’t. She lives with her parents on the base. She has school at the base and follow training after classes, and she still has energy after all of that to see the few friends that are authorized to come on the base. She mades me tired.
Seventh, when I tell you to send me a good picture, it wasn’t a joke girl, let me introduce you America Chavez, she try to play the cool kid but she is lost everytime, like, she lives on the base since few months, almost a year now, and she still get lost to go from A to B. Her power is really cool but scary too, she can open portal in every universe of the multiverse but, alternatively, she doesn’t know where it will be, and she also don’t know how to come back from. For the moment, her portals are used to make apple travels, I'm pretty sure these apples are really happy to end in another universe. She lives on the base to control her power and hopefully, one day, find her mothers in the multiverse.
Eighth, we call them the duo of gods. They are avatar used by Egyptians gods, yeah it sound awkward the first time but it’s true. Layla El-Faouly and Mark Spector, Scarlet Scarab and Moon Knight. Layla is the avatar of Taweret, the goddess of women and children. Mark is the avatar of Khonshu, the god the moon and the night sky. So far you can tell everything is ok, but, plot twist, Mark has a dissociative identity disorder. Mark Spector is also Steven Grant and Jack Lockley. Mark was a mercenary, Steven worked in a museum and Jack… They try to keep him sleeping. Oh, and Mark think Khonshu disappear but they’ve proof that he still in him. They both (all four? all six?) lives on the base, Mark has a special room to sleep.
Nineth and tenth are strangely friends, sometimes in a disgusting way, Eddie Brock and Wade Wilson, Venom and Deadpool. Eddie share is body with a symbiont, an extraterrest that live inside of him. Wade is an experience that worked but like Wade like to joke about everything he ended up looking like that, his power is that he can never die, like, you can cut his body in multiple pieces, he still alive. Wade is fascinated by Venom, really, we all seen Wade let Venom ate his arm or his leg, it was a nightmare. They both lives on the base, more to control them, I think.
That is all of my co-workers, next post will be about people without power at the base or enemies we had fight, idk but it's late and i need to sleep.

author’s note:⠀⠀⠀‘’⠀⠀⠀I wrote this piece when the Black Panther Tumblr fandom was still poppin’ off back in the day. I think I might’ve gotten discouraged about writing or even posting it when seeing the way other people’s pieces were gaining so much traction then and just quit writing it completely when I was halfway through with it because of my apprehension of not being able to upkeep with everyone else. I also wasn’t as heavy on writing then as I am now;I was working a dead-end job and had a ton of toxic situations going on in my life then as well⸝ so that could also be why I hadn’t finished it. Maybe one day God’ll give me the courage to finish it⸝ but it’ll more than likely be with a different love interest although this is definitely not my first time using Nirvana’s character. This could also be an ongoing series for me;posting content from the past that I’ll more than likely will never finish⸝ I don’t know for sure yet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀𝐎𝐌𝐍𝐈𝐒𝐂𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓
ㅤㅤㅤ𝕰RIK STEVENS WAS THE KIND of person that always made sure his presence was felt, whether it was with his obnoxious laughter, belligerent attitude or heavy walking, all mannerisms in which he had sadly picked up while serving in the Central Intelligence Agency. Somehow it seemed to always abruptly alter when being in the tranquil aura of her or her offspring, even when he fought against it.
His laughter came off as more infectious than anything now, his attitude compassionate and as far as footsteps went? He trod lightly through the narrow hallways of her single-family household in his Nike brand crew socks while chewing at the plastic aglets of his vintage Cross Colours pull-over; his shadow striking against the smooth apricot colored walls as a result of the sunset casting through the foyer window and out through the crystal chandelier.
He was trying his hardest to avoid waking the child he had put down for bed no less than five minutes ago all while trying to avoid interfering with the low, but captivating humming he had became accustomed to hearing during this time of day, over the past three years as well. It was either that or the pungent aroma of cigarette smoke luring him in closer to the panel door of the master bedroom which was ajar.
What he had thought to be easy accessibility to being inconspicuous had actually turned out to be a trap in the short-run once he went to push the door open and the drawn-out sound of the hinges squeaking caught her attention.
Her low humming had subsided. She went from gazing out the picture window of the window seat to glancing over her shoulder at her bedroom doorway; her frizzy tresses following her every movement. The violet purple, hot pink and orange hues of the sunset engulfed her small silhouette like no other while swirl patterns of the cigarette smoke continued to transcend into thin air.
“Are you gonna continue to stand there or are you gonna join me?” He nasal voice had finally filled the quiet bedroom.
Erik really couldn’t help but to chuckle internally at the sassy attitude she was handing him before deciding to answer her question by approaching the window seat in which she rested on. He overshadowed her, not brief enough for her to assume he was plotting to make a move on her and not long enough for her to register that he was admiring her ethereal beauty again.
From the speckles adorning the bridge of her nose that she was infamously known to cover-up when stepping outside the house to her high cheekbones, Erik loved every fiber of her being, even if he was too masculine to admit it at times.
He finally released the damp aglets of his pull-over that were wedged between his molars before giving his woman his idea of a formal greeting. He playfully slapped her on the thigh which was only being covered by the sheer fabric of her stockings before plopping down beside her on the window seat and kicking his feet up while doing so.
Whether it’d be invading her personal space or his heavy hands, Erik was looking for any reason for her to complain so that he could put her in her place, but she hadn’t. Not even once.

“My King,” Okoye called, handing T’Challa a bag he forgot. “Next week.”
“ I know Okoye. I promise I will be ready to leave.” Okoye nodded before reboarding the jet. The king watched before beginning the short walk up to his friend's front door.
He rang the doorbell before staring up at the building. It’d been years since he’d last been in this apartment. Freshman year of college to be exact. Anaya’s parents had invited him to spend Thanksgiving with them after finding him and their daughter studying together on a surprise visit to their daughter's dorm. They weren’t in the room, lucky for them, but it seemed that her parents were invested in a dream that wouldn’t come true. Not that either of them was ready to admit they couldn’t be together either. At least that early on.
So much has changed since then. They graduated. Got two Ph. Ds respectively and then moved on. Anaya became a celebrated fashion historian and critic, and T’Challa a king. Halfway across the world, they’d reconnected by chance in Paris and hadn’t let go since. Somewhere T’Challa had been holding on to a silly notion that maybe he and Anaya could give being together another go, but he knew it was a fruitless endeavor.
Same as his ringing of the doorbell had been. Worried, the king began knocking on the door. “Quit your racket! She’s not here!” An elderly woman crooned from her front porch. “Pardon?”
“She ain’t here! The baby called.” The woman chuckled to herself, “Ran outta here like a firecracker. Her two friends following close behind.”
“She was pregnant?”
“Don’t know how you missed it sonny, big as a blimp, carrying high though. My bets on a girl you know,” she paused to size up the young king. “And you must be that no good bastard baby’s father. Walking out on her like that you know I should-!”
“Ma’am, I promise you I am not him. As much as I wish I could have been,” the king mumbled the last part.
“Well then now’s your chance son. The real father ain’t here, and I hate to see that child grow up without a father figure. What’s keeping you from claiming that child?”
“A lot more than you’ll ever know..” T’Challa looked up, despair written across his face. The woman's gaze softened. “You’ll never know till you try. At least go and see her. I mean you came to her house. All dressed up with flowers and a bag of gifts. You must really care for her.”
“I do.”
“She’s at the university hospital.” The old woman instructed. “Thank you,” the king nodded. “Anything to see her happy, ever since her parents died she’s been sitting up in that house all alone. Make it right.”
Two hours and four phone calls later, T’Challa pulled up to the hospital in his hired car. The driver opened the back door of the SUV to allow the king and his baby present out into the air. He nodded at the driver before making his way up to the reception desk. “Hi, how may I help you?” The woman looked up from her computer. “You must be looking for our maternity ward. This your first?” She nodded at the gifts. “You could say that,” T’Challa chuckled.
“May I have your name and the patient’s?”
“T’Challa, and Anaya Johnson.”
“Great, Ms. Johnson is in room 408 in the maternity wing. Go down the hall, on the left, there will be an elevator. Take that up to the fourth floor, make a right and it should be the fourth door down. You can’t miss it.”
“Thank you,” the king smiled hoisting up the big teddy bear, careful not to crush the flowers and various other bags. “Would you like an escort Mr. T’Challa?”
“I believe I can handle this one,” The king insisted. “Very well, and congratulations.”
The king frowned. “Thank you.”
Four floors up, and three doors down, T’Challa finally stood outside of room 408. He took several steadying breaths before knocking. “Who is it? A familiar voice called. He heard footsteps on the other side of the door before it carefully creaked open.
“T’Challa?”
The king smiled in surprise. “Tella? Hi.”
“Hey, what are you doing here?” The brown skin woman beamed, opening up the door, her eyes widening slightly as she saw all of the gifts.”She said she hadn’t heard from you in months.”
“Yeah, I was on my way to visit Anaya and her neighbor told me she was here, having a baby.”
“Yeah, um come in. She and Jean went for a walk, the doctor said it would help with contractions.” Tella grabbed the bear from T’Challa and moved to set it in a corner, while he found space to set down his other gifts. “So how’ve you been? We used to get status updates from Anaya for you. Then you just vanished.”
“Well, there is a lot I haven’t told you all. Wakanda is a monarchy, and my father, and his father, and his father, and his mother, and her father, and his mother, and so on, have all ruled our country. Now it is my turn.”
“To rule?”
“To rule.” The king nodded. “So you vanished because you became king?”
“I vanished because there was a coup, an attempt on my life, which was almost successful. The coup sent my country into a civil war,” The king explained.
“T’Challa, this doesn’t even sound real,” Tella interrupted. “I mean, how is anyone supposed to believe you?”
“May I see your phone?” T’Challa stopped her.
“T’Challa,”
“Just let me prove it to you. I did not ghost Anaya by choice. I still want to be with her.”
“After all this time-”
“Please, I know it seems implausible, but let me show you,” the king reached out a hand.
“Fine T’Challa-” Tella handed over her phone. “Ask siri,” the king instructed.
“Seriously?” Tella frowned. “Just ask her.”
“Siri, who is the king of Wakanda?”
Her phone glowed before responding, “T’Challa Udaku was crowned King of Wakanda after the passing of his father last summer during a United Nations Assembly. I found this article online from the New York Times and several other sources.”
“T’challa if this is true, I mean since this is true, the prospects of you and Anaya getting together is now even more impossible. Why are you here?”
“Because she is my friend, and I love her. She is having a baby, and I will support her.”
“You are not its father!”
“Don’t you think I know that? Do you know how much it hurts me to know that I’m not? That I may never be the father of any of her children.”
“This isn’t about you T.”
“I know, but the child’s father is not here. I am. Even if he was, I still would be, because she is my friend too Tella.”
“I just do not want to see her hurt. Don’t give her false hope T’Challa.”
“On the contrary, I believe it is she who gives me false hope,” the king sighed. Tella pulled him in for a hug. “Just give it time, and who knows, you’re a king now aren’t you?”
“That I am,” T’Challa nodded as the room’s door squeaked open. A nurse helped Anaya back into the room and T'Challa couldn’t help the way his eyes widened at Anaya’s pregnant form. His heart erupted in butterflies, imagining if that had been his child. Tella slapping his arm startled him back to reality. Tella jerked her head towards where the nurse was trying to help Anaya and maneuver the IV stand back into the room with her. T’Challa hurried over to wrap an arm around Anaya’s waist and grab her other hand. The nurse smiled in thanks and surprise. No surprise could top Anaya’s expression. She gaped as T’Challa shot her a smile. “Long time no see,” The king teased as he helped her further into the room and onto her bed. A grimace stole her smile as another contraction hit.
“I’ll grab Dr.Ben and she’ll be right in to check on your progress, Ms. Johnson.” The middle-aged black woman smiled at the expecting mother. “Thank you,” Anaya smiled before turning back to her best friend. “What are you doing here?”
“I came to surprise you, only to find out from your neighbor that you were in labor,” The king smiled.
“Mrs. Patterson told you where I was?”
“I guess so,” the king frowned. Anaya and Tella laughed. “What did you do to her? Mrs. Patterson doesn’t like anyone. Especially men.” Tella explained.
“She did almost try to beat me up when she thought I was your ‘bastard baby’s father’.” T’Challa told the two women who groaned. Anaya grimaced her way through a contraction and T’Challa stepped over and offered her his hand. The mother smiled at his touch and threaded her fingers through his as the contraction dissipated.
“I’m gonna go find Jean in the gift shop,” Tella excused herself, leaving T’Challa and Anaya alone. “What’s been going on with you King T’Challa,” Anaya teased as she tried to push herself into a seated position.
“Nothing much. The world of politics cooled off for a while and I wanted to apologize for being awol these past months.” T’Challa helped rearrange the pillows so she could sit up. “What about you soon to be umama?”
“Well, this has been my life pretty much, still don’t know how I’m going to manage working at museums and shows towing this one around.”
“Where’s the father?” T’Challa asked softly. A tear formed in Anaya’s eye, “He doesn’t want to be involved. We were drunk that night and you know…..”
“You don’t have to explain,” T’Challa squeezed her hand. “Thanks,” she murmured. “What are you having?” The king inquired, sweeping some box braids back over her shoulder. “I don’t know. I wanted to be surprised.”
“Your neighbor thinks it’s a girl,” T’Challa laughed. “She’s been telling me about me carrying high since it became visible I was pregnant.” Anaya laughed. “I guess we’ll find out today or tomorrow.” T’Challa chuckled. His face quickly fell as she slipped into another contraction. He tried to help her breathe the way he’d seen on television but ended up making her laugh. “You’re really bad at this,” Anaya reclined back onto her pillows rubbing her stomach absentmindedly. “Thanks for the vote of confidence,” T’Challa smiled. “It’s two quick ones and long out. Not in out in out,” Anaya explained. “I’ll do better next time,” T’Challa promised.
“How long are you visiting, you don’t have to stay. It could be another day or so before I give birth.”
“I’m here for the week, until next Tuesday. And Anaya I want to stay. Besides, I can give Tells and Tonya-Jean a break to walk around.”
“Thanks,” the pregnant mother smiled. Her face contorted as another contraction washed over her. “There you go,” T’Challa soothed as she squeezed his hand. He helped her breathe through and eventually, she settled back. “At this rate, it’ll only be a couple of hours until they’re here with us,” the mom to be sighed. “Then I’ll be here as long as you’ll let me be here,” T’Challa kissed the back of her hand. Sweat had gathered on her forehead and he reached for something to dab it away. “I want you here as long as you can be, distract me.”
“Why? You are not enjoying the miracle of life.”
“Says the man not currently pushing a baby out of his body.”
“Fair enough,” he raised his unoccupied arm in surrender. “Tell me about Wakanda and being a king,” Anaya asked, groaning through another contraction.
“Well,” T’Challa started.
Eight hours later, the room was silent. Tonya and Tells had gone home to catch up on sleep. Anaya was sleeping off her exhaustion and the king of Wakanda sat rocking a sleeping baby girl. Well, she was sleeping. Sydney Iesha Johnson’s big brown eyes fluttered open and stared at the man holding her. She stretched out her tiny body and T’Challa’s heart soared at the feeling of her moving around in the swaddle.
“Hi pretty girl,” he whispered. “Hi,” he cooed, smiling as she yawned. “You are so beautiful, just like your mommy. She was the most beautiful girl in the world and now she’s tied with you.” He rocked the infant softly. “T’Challa?” Anaya croaked. “Hey,” the king stood up and walked the baby over to her mother. “She was fussy in the crib, and the nurse suggested I hold her, I hope you don’t mind,” he rambled. Anaya laid a hand on his arm and shook her head. “It’s fine. I love seeing you with her.
“You know I’m here for you right? Both of you now,” the king searched her eyes. “I know I’m not her father, and I’ll never try to be that for her, but she’s a part of you and that makes her important to me.”
Anaya teared up and nodded.
“I want you to move to Wakanda.”

Word count: 8,894
CW: A little blood and cutting but NOT for self-harm reasons. If it bothers you, skip the second half of the scene at Kokou’s temple.
youtube
Nia pressed her cheek to the window, careful not to smudge the thin line of white clay painted down the center of her face. Her eyes were wide, and her mouth hung slightly open as she watched Wakanda zoom by from hundreds of feet in the air. She had always loved seeing what the world looked like from above, but it had been years since she last got to enjoy the view. When she was young, Amare would carry her in his arms as he flew high above the ground to give her a taste of what she so desperately wanted: to feel the wind beneath her nonexistent wings.
T’Challa half-watched Nia from his seat off to the side of the cabin as he flipped through news articles on his kimoyo beads. As they flew over a statue of Bast in her full panther form, he could tell the bright blue light radiating from the tunnel beneath the goddess intrigued her. Her head tilted slightly to the left, and he turned off his beads right as she turned around with a question on her lips.
“That’s Mt. Bashenga,” T’Challa answered prematurely as he stood and made his way over to the window, looking out at his kingdom as Okoye steered the Royal Talon over the Mining province.
“Why’s it glowing?”
“Vibranium.”
“Ohhh.” Nia thought back to the human history books she read as a child that told their story of the founding of Wakanda. Obviously, they had censored the part about aziza, but she still found their revisionist history fascinating. “That’s where the meteorite landed, right?”
T’Challa nodded, impressed by her knowledge.
“Ubaba always said vibranium was ‘the humans’ magic’,” she whispered just loud enough for him to hear.
T’Challa was mildly shocked. He had never considered it that way, but he supposed it was sort of otherworldly what they were able to do with the substance. In comparison to other humans, anyway.
Okoye kept her focus on flying the ship, but T’Challa couldn’t help but spot the slight glow that emanated from Nia’s skin while she ogled the scenery. The king reflected on the description of aziza he had read the day before and remembered that it mentioned their luminous skin. He had noticed that even when she was standoffish towards him, she seemed to radiate light from the inside out, but seeing her literally light up in excitement brought him joy.
When Birnin Zana came into view, Nia’s eyes curiously trailed along the tributaries that moseyed through the metropolis and she was reminded of the magic realm’s big city, Birnin Umlingo. She smiled fondly at how similar they were despite the fact that Birnin Zana was so much bigger. It was nestled between rolling hills and sharp cliffsides, and she was pleasantly surprised to see all the lush greenery dispersed throughout the city. There were small parks everywhere and most of the roofs were topped with well-kept gardens. The skyscrapers and apartment buildings stretched to the sky like the trees that lined the streets, but Nia was almost blinded when the sun bounced off of an impressive structure in the middle of the city. Two almost conical, shining towers spiraled up from an ancient foundation that swirled around the base like the flowing tributary that surrounded most of it like a moat. The towers were connected by a long bridge about a third of the way up and despite her amazement, Nia couldn’t help but wonder why they had to build two towers instead of just one.
“Bast, is that the palace?” She pointed up ahead.
T’Challa smirked proudly. He never tired of seeing the dual vibranium spires that towered over even the tallest skyscrapers throughout the city.
“It is,” he said proudly.
“It’s so big,” she whispered, then turned to look at him. “Does it ever feel empty?”
He furrowed his brows, making a little crease appear between them that Nia found endearing. “How do you mean?”
“Well, it’s just you and your family that live there, right?”
The king nodded.
“Then why do you need so much space? And why two instead of just one? It seems so unnecessary.”
Okoye bit the inside of her lip to keep from snickering at Nia’s sincere inquiries. She wasn’t too keen on Nia and wasn’t quite sure why she was there, but she had worked for T’Challa long enough to know he didn’t like people questioning him.
“I don’t- it’s not just...look.” He pointed back out the window to distract her, and Nia whipped her head around to watch their descent to the landing pad in front of the palace.
The three of them exited the Talon, but instead of entering T’Challa’s gratuitously large home, they made a left and walked through the palace gates and into the bustling streets of Birnin Zana. Nia had been to the big city before when she was young, but it seemed like it had exploded over the last couple of decades. It had always been a busy hub of commerce for the Merchant tribe, but business owners from the other tribes had moved there in droves over the past few years to get a piece of the pie.
The three of them passed through the financial district with ease. Nia kept her neck craned to look up at the tall banks, corporate offices, and massive parking garages filled with hovercars. In the distance, she saw an arena and she wondered what took place there. Did they have many concerts? Sporting events? She made a mental note to ask about that later and continued to take in her surroundings. The maglev trains zooming by high above the street caught her attention, and her eyes widened. She had never been on a train before.
They eventually made it to Three Step Town, the cultural hub of the city and Nia looked on in awe at the various businesses that surrounded them. Once again, she was reminded of Birnin Umlingo as she looked around at the diversity that surrounded her. Most of the older folks were dressed in the traditional clothing of their tribes, but the younger Wakandans seemed to prefer a more modern look. They really were a spectacle. Some people had brightly colored manes and shining vibranium tattoos that decorated their skin, and the sight had Nia’s wheels turning. She had never really experimented much with her look, but they were giving her the inspiration to try something different.
Just as Nia began to ponder what body modification would look good on her, she felt someone grab her and yank her to the side of the street. She began to protest right as a streetcar full of people rolled by. Nia turned to thank her savior, smiling sheepishly when she realized it was Okoye.
“Watch where you’re going,” the general warned harshly and let go of Nia’s arm. The two of them joined T’Challa as he spoke to a snaggletoothed young boy who had proudly shown him the Black Panther action figure that he carried everywhere. The boy’s parents thanked the king for being so polite before they said goodbye and went on their way. Nia’s heart warmed a little at seeing T’Challa be so kind to them. He could have easily ignored the family or had Okoye intervene, but he seemed to enjoy interacting with his people. As the three of them continued on their journey, a small smile pushed up the corners of Nia’s mouth knowing he wasn’t as arrogant as she assumed.
Nia was almost overwhelmed by the many shops they passed by. She could buy anything she wanted: jewelry, instruments, furniture, hats. It seemed like they had everything. However, she came to a halt when they walked by a store with colorful, hand-woven baskets hanging out front. The old lady that ran the shop noticed Nia staring and came forward to help her pick one out, but paused when she saw that the king was standing beside her. She saluted him fondly and turned to face his companion.
“Excuse me, how much for this one?” Nia asked the shopkeep as her fingers ran over the intricate patterns along the sides of a mid-sized sweetgrass basket.
“For you it is free,” the older woman said through a bright smile that crinkled her eyes. Before Nia could protest, she had already taken it down and pushed it into her arms.
“Are you sure? I can pay-”
“Just tell people where you got it,” the woman winked before going back inside to help a customer that was ready to check out.
Nia couldn’t believe how kind the woman had been to give her the gift, but her amazement was cut short by T’Challa leaning in close and ruining the moment.
“Just one of the perks of traveling with the king,” he teased.
Nia rolled her eyes and stepped away from him, continuing down the street with her basket swinging in the crook of her elbow. She had been so caught up in her surroundings that she hadn’t noticed the stares from passersby and began to get a little self-conscious. A few people even snapped a picture or two of the king and his elusive friend, some of which would surely end up on gossip blogs by the end of the day.
Her nervousness was short-lived and quickly got replaced with longing when they turned the corner and walked right through the food district. Not only did the colorful produce stands call to her, but the smells of curries and grilled meats continuously pulled her attention from left to right. However, when a deliciously sweet aroma tickled her nose, she stopped dead in the middle of the road.
“Where is that coming from?” Nia sniffed the air and veered off the main street as she followed the scent to a man that was serving up deep-fried sweet plantain on a stick, drizzled with chocolate. T’Challa kept a close eye on Nia but stayed back and let her wander up to the dessert cart alone. He watched as she engaged the man in conversation and saw her come alive when she tasted the sample he provided her. A small smile crept up the king’s face, but his amusement was cut short by Okoye clearing her throat next to him.
“My king,” she started, and he turned slightly in her direction, nodding for her to continue as he kept his eyes on Nia. “If I may...what exactly is her purpose here with us?”
“Nia is a devotee of Bast, and I believe she may be helpful in our attempts to understand what has happened to her,” he stated matter-of-factly.
Okoye sensed his unwillingness to go further into detail and grew quiet again as Nia damn near skipped back over to them with her hands full.
“Here you go,” Nia sang as she held out two of the desserts for them to take. “He saw I was with the king and gave me three for free!”
Neither of them was hungry, but they just couldn’t say no to her big, childlike eyes.
“Thank you,” T’Challa waved to the man behind the counter and took a bite of the dessert, eyes rolling back in ecstasy. “Mmm”
“See? It’s amazing,” Nia said with a mouth full of plantain. Even Okoye had to agree.
The three of them ate their midmorning snack as they strolled through the streets, eventually making their way to a much quieter section on the outskirts of the busy city center. Just as Nia finished licking the last bit of chocolate from the wooden stick, she came face to face with an ancient-looking stone building that didn’t quite fit the vibe of the modern neighborhood. Her eyes zeroed in on the large statue at the entrance. It was a being with the body of a man and the head of an ibis holding a scroll in one hand and a staff in the other.
“Welcome to the flagship branch of the Wakandan Public Library,” T’Challa said proudly.
While Nia loved a good library, she was a little confused about why they were there. “I thought we were going to a temple.”
T’Challa wiggled his eyebrows as he stepped past her, climbing the steps with Okoye in tow, “This is the temple.”
Nia’s curiosity got the best of her, and she followed behind the king and his general. They threw their sticks away in the trash cans outside of the doors that swished open as they approached. Nia hadn’t expected the building to have such modern technologies based on the look of it, but she surmised the library would have a few more surprises up its sleeves.
“Kumkani wam!”
All three of their heads turned towards the woman behind the large marble desk as she scrambled to salute the king, dropping the small stack of books from her arms. T’Challa quickly rounded the desk and smiled at her as he crouched down to pick the books off of the floor. Before she could stoop down to help him, he had already placed them neatly on the desk.
“T-thank you, my king,” the woman stammered and pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose. Never in her life had she imagined she would be so close to royalty, much less her biggest crush. “What can I do for you?”
“Well…” he started, trailing off to get her name.
“Fatima, sir.”
“What a beautiful name,” he flirted innocently and leaned on the cool marble as Nia and Okoye both fought their eyes from rolling to the ceiling. Okoye was used to his flirtatious manner making women swoon at his feet, but it still irked her to no end. They had a job to do, and he was wasting time. Nia, however, felt the tiniest tinge of something deep in her gut as she watched him make eyes at the beautiful librarian. She waved it off as annoyance since she still wasn’t the king’s biggest fan. Adding “womanizer” to her list of reasons not to like him certainly tipped the scales further away from him, balancing out his actions from earlier.
Fatima giggled as she struggled to make eye contact with the handsome king, “Thank you, your highness.”
“Please, call me T’Challa,” he implored, resting his hand over his heart and flashing his irresistible smile.
“Oh, no. I couldn’t do that-”
“I insist.”
Okoye cleared her throat, and T’Challa’s eyes reluctantly shot in her direction.
“Anyway, Fatima, we were wondering if Abdu is in today,” T’Challa continued as he straightened up and stood to his full height, making Fatima swoon even more in his presence. Her eyes wandered down to his chest, but she snapped out of it and attempted to look him in the eye. Her knees nearly buckled under the intensity of his gaze, but she stood firm.
“Y-yes, he is, my ki-”
T’Challa reprimanded her with a simple raise of his right eyebrow, and she quickly corrected herself.
“I mean, T’Challa,” Fatima giggled once more. “I’ll go get him for you.”
“Thank you, Fatima,” he smiled down at her, watching as she walked away with a pep in her step and her hips twitching just a little more than usual.
Fatima disappeared behind a green velvet curtain, and when they were sure she was out of earshot, Nia and Okoye both turned to look at the king. They wore matching expressions of disapproval, but, for some reason, it stung to see on Nia’s face.
“What’s wrong?” he asked her.
“Must you flirt with every woman you see?” Okoye butted in, clearly exasperated by his antics.
Nia’s eyebrows jumped as a teasing smirk settled on her lips. “Oh, so this is a common occurrence?”
“You wouldn’t believe how many-”
“General,” T’Challa warned, and Okoye stopped talking.
Nia tried to contain a laugh, but it came out more like a snort than she intended. Just as T’Challa opened his mouth to make fun of her, Fatima appeared from behind the curtain with a heavy-set man with tortoiseshell glasses just a few steps behind her.
“T’Challa, my boy! Oh, excuse me, my king.” The man bowed sarcastically and crossed his arms in a salute. T’Challa waved him off with a smile and a click of his tongue, and the two men embraced each other. Nia had noticed T’Challa wasn’t really one to demand formalities, but the man’s familiarity with the king intrigued her.
“Abdu, how have you been?”
It had been several months since T’Challa last visited the library. Abdu had worked and worshipped there for decades and had watched the king grow into the man before him. Some of T’Challa’s fondest childhood memories consisted of him spending hours curled up in the stacks, flipping through whatever book caught his eye that day. Abdu would bring him story after story for him to get lost in, and the older man never tired of T’Challa’s curiosity. No matter how many questions he threw at him.
“Getting old, but I can’t complain,” the much shorter man said as they pulled apart. He looked around T’Challa and noticed his company. “Okoye, a pleasure to see you as always.”
“You as well, Abdu,” she smiled.
“And who might this lovely creature be?” Abdu asked as his gaze fell on Nia. She bristled at his choice of words but said nothing. Even as a child, she had always been sensitive to the word “creature” and felt it offensive to refer to non-humans as such. She knew he had no idea about her bloodline, though, and since he meant no harm she simply ignored the terminology.
“Nia Olu, sir,” she introduced herself with a nod of her head, and he returned the gesture.
“Ah, a beautiful name for a beautiful woman. And what is it that you do, Nia Olu?”
“I am a healer and a devotee of Bast.”
“A devotee, huh? Well, I think we will get along nicely,” he smiled warmly at her before turning back to the king. “What can I do for you all today?”
“Well, actually, Nia is a big part of why we’re here,” T’Challa began. “It seems Bast has gone missing. Neither of us has been able to contact her as of late.”
“Are you a priestess?” Abdu asked Nia, confused as to why a simple devotee would be partnered with the king for such a task. Okoye felt vindicated by his questioning but stayed quiet.
“No, sir.”
“Then, I must say, I’m a little confused on how you would have a direct connection to her-”
“She is highly favored in the goddess’ eyes,” T’Challa cut in, hoping his vague answer would be enough to dissuade Abdu from asking too many questions. He knew it wouldn’t be easy to hide anything from a priest of the god of wisdom, but he also knew he couldn’t give away Nia’s full identity. “We were wondering if maybe you could see if Thoth knows where she is or why she isn’t answering.”
Abdu could tell there was something else to the story, but decided not to press the subject. He figured that if the king felt it was important enough to keep from him, then he had to trust his judgment.
The priest nodded and motioned for the three of them to follow him. T’Challa winked at Fatima before falling in step with Abdu, and once again, Nia’s and Okoye’s eyes struggled to remain straight ahead as they followed behind the two men.
Nia couldn’t help but stare in awe at the rows and rows of floor-to-ceiling bookshelves they passed as they walked through the centuries-old library. She imagined herself spending hours combing through the texts and soaking up whatever knowledge held, just like she did with the many books Amare provided her with as a child. Her daydreaming was cut short when they passed through the children’s section, and she noticed a display of picture books, one of which caught her eye. There, on the cover, was a colorful illustration of an aziza sitting in a tree, watching over a group of children as they played in the grass below him.
Before she knew it, Nia had grabbed the book and started flipping through the pages, scanning the words and pictures for any sign of historical truth. She found none, but her hope didn’t die out. Maybe, just maybe the library held onto more of the past than the Wakandans realized. She knew magical creatures were relegated to folktales, but she began to wonder how many of those tales were historically accurate, if any. She hadn’t noticed that the others had stopped and were watching her tear through the book like it held the secrets to the universe.
“You like that one? It’s a fairly new release. Very popular with the children,” Abdu said, but his words fell on deaf ears.
“Nia?” the king called out to her.
She jumped and dropped the book, but T’Challa caught it before it could hit the ground.
“Yeah? Sorry, I just…” Nia trailed off, unsure of what to say. All three of them looked at her curiously, but when T’Challa’s eyes graced the cover, he understood why she had been called to it. “Are there many stories like this?”
“Of aziza?” Abdu asked for clarification, and Nia nodded. “Sure! Kids love fantastical creatures. You know, some of them even swear up and down that they’ve seen them in real life.”
T’Challa and Nia shared a quick glance as he set the book back where she found it. Of course, Okoye caught their quick exchange.
“Such wild imaginations,” Nia murmured, and the group continued on their trek. She was quiet for a moment as she tried to figure out the best way to word her next question when she decided to just go for it. “Abdu, is there any mention of, um, species that are no longer around in any of these books?”
T’Challa looked at her knowingly out of the corner of his eye. He knew what she was getting at, and he was curious about Abdu’s answer. After seeing Nia’s book the day before, his mind had begun to wonder about ancient Wakandan texts. She had told him that they coexisted long ago, so there had to be some evidence hidden deep in the bowels of the library. If there was proof anywhere, it was here.
“Of course!” Abdu said excitedly and pointed to the far left wall. “Species naturally go extinct all the time. If that interests you, check out our history section over there.”
Nia and T’Challa both cataloged that information for later and started mentally planning their next visits.
The deeper they traveled into the vast library, a tingling grew in Nia’s stomach. There was great power there, and she could feel it. The tingling intensified as they arrived at a large door with an image of Thoth that had been hand-carved by artisans long ago.
“We’ll take it from here, Okoye,” T’Challa ordered, and the general nodded before standing at attention with her back to the door. Then, his eyes fell to Nia. “Ready?”
“I think…”
“That’ll serve you well here,” Abdu joked as he pushed open the heavy door.
Nia wasn’t quite sure what she was expecting to see, but a winding staircase certainly wasn’t on her list of possibilities. The three of them quietly descended the steps, and all that could be heard was the sounds of their sandals connecting with the stone as they went. After what seemed like forever, Abdu came to a halt at another large door and turned to face his visitors.
“You must enter with pure intentions and a cool head, or he will not answer. Understood?”
Nia and T’Challa answered in unison.
“Yes, sir.”
“Of course.”
“Good,” Abdu smiled at them and reached for the handle, pushing it open and revealing what looked to be a private study. The lamps along the stone walls lit up when they entered, and Nia was once again amazed at how the ancient seemed to flawlessly combine with the modern. As she looked around, she noticed that instead of books, there were scrolls stacked neatly on the shelves. A high-backed chair sat behind a large wooden desk with several scrolls strewn about it, and in the center of the room, there was a stone lectern that looked like it had been there since the dawn of time. Colorful pillows surrounded it on the floor, and next to it stood another statue of Thoth. This time, his hands were out and he was holding a staff that resembled the one from the statue out front, except this one was made of gold. This one was real, and it made the hairs on the back of Nia’s neck stand at attention.
Abdu made his way over to the closest shelf and grabbed a scroll from the top of the stack. He then crossed the room again and stood behind the lectern. When he unrolled the scroll, Nia and T’Challa were both surprised to find that it was blank. They watched with bated breath as he produced a shiny gold pen from his pocket and removed the staff from the statue’s arms.
“You two, come sit down,” Abdu said to them, pointing to the floor pillows.
They obeyed his order, and each grabbed a pillow. T’Challa sat cross-legged while Nia carefully placed her new basket on the floor and tucked her feet under her. They waited patiently while Abdu mumbled a prayer under his breath. Despite T’Challa’s enhanced hearing, he could barely make out what Abdu was saying, but the more he spoke, the colder the room became. The priest continued his prayers for several minutes until the staff began to glow with blinding orange light and his mouth snapped shut tight. A soft breeze blew through the room as his eyes glowed the same color as the staff, and the pen in his left hand started to frantically scribble words onto the formerly blank scroll. His hand moved faster than humanly possible, and Nia recognized what was happening as a possession. She bowed her head in the god’s presence and nudged T’Challa in his side to do the same. He followed suit, but neither of their eyes left Abdu, too curious to look away.
It seemed like forever had come and gone as the two sat in silence, watching in awe while Abdu filled the scroll as he channeled Thoth. The only sound that filled the air was the fast-moving pen on the papyrus and a faint humming from the staff, but suddenly, it all stopped. The staff’s light waned, and Abdu blinked his eyes back to their normal shade of hazel. He carefully placed the staff back in the statue’s hands and read over the words he had been given from his god. A frown appeared on the priest’s face, and Nia made eye contact with T’Challa. Neither one felt good news was coming.
“Well,” Abdu broke the tense silence, “to sum it up, it seems Thoth hasn’t seen or heard from Bast in several weeks. He says that’s very unlike her, as I’m sure you know, T’Challa.”
The king nodded. “Is there anything else? Did he say where she might be?”
“Oh, he said plenty, but not about your question. He can be quite long-winded at times,” Abdu murmured as he scanned the text once more to make sure he wasn’t missing anything. He then looked down at his two visitors with an apology in his eyes. “I wish I could’ve been of more help.”
T’Challa stood from his seated position and reached a hand out to Nia. She swatted it away and stood on her own, straightening out her long, flowing skirt before sending Abdu a warm smile. “Thank you for trying.”
“It was a pleasure, my dear.”
“So,” Nia turned to the king, “where to next?”
--------
The smile never left Okoye’s face as she landed the Talon in an open field and proudly led them to their next destination. They had traveled to Okoye’s hometown in the Mining province, and she nodded at her former neighbors as they waved to get her attention. It wasn’t often that she could return to Birnin Djata, but since she was on duty, she had to remain professional.
The town was much smaller than Birnin Zana, and the walk to the temple was much shorter this time around. A few moderately-sized dwellings lined the road to the temple, and Nia could see the town square in the distance. They passed groups of miners boarding and exiting the trains that took them to and from work, and Nia couldn’t help but wonder what all that vibranium looked like up close.
When they arrived at the temple, Nia was pleasantly surprised that this one actually looked like a place of worship. The wall that surrounded it looked as old as time, but the vibranium door in the center had to be no more than a hundred years old. A strange sound echoed from inside, and although Nia thought she recognized it, she was confused on why it was coming from a temple of all places.
“Is something wrong? What’s going on in there?” she asked with concern, making Okoye’s smile expand and her eyes light up.
“Sparring.”
Nia’s confusion grew, and she turned to T’Challa for clarification.
“Kokou is the god of war. Fighters often train here, and many of his followers go on to become great warriors. Including Okoye,” he explained.
“Ohhh, ok.”
Okoye led them up the temple’s steps, and Nia’s attention was drawn to the rows of fire that lined the walkway. As the party of three got closer to the doors, they slowly parted to grant them access. Loud shouts and grunts came from the right, and Okoye led them down the hallway, directly towards the noise.
Nia watched excitedly as the warriors-in-training sparred with one another. Fists connected with flesh, spears sliced through the air, and fighters seemed to glide across the padded floor. She recognized some of the fighting styles and thought back to her younger days when Amare took it upon himself to teach her some of the combat skills he had to learn for his days as a secret operative. Even though she was a healer, Nia sure was scrappy and could hold her own. It had been a while, though, and she was sure she had forgotten her training over the years.
A bell rang on the other side of the training room, and all of the fighting ceased. Okoye bowed her head in deference as a tall, muscular older woman in red emerged from an observation room and smiled softly in her direction.
“My king,” the woman saluted T’Challa, making all of the fighters whip their heads around and salute him as well. The woman crossed the floor as her trainees stood at attention, and grabbed Okoye’s hands in hers. “Okoye, my dear, it has been too long.”
“Priestess Yaa, how good to see you.”
“And my king, welcome to the Temple of Kokou.”
“Thank you, priestess.”
“What brings you here?” she asked before shooting a sly glance at Okoye. “You never come visit anymore, so I know it must be important.”
“My apologies for keeping her from you,” T’Challa interjected.
“None needed. I knew when Okoye became general that she would have little time for us anymore,” Yaa waved him off and smiled proudly at Okoye before her eyes fell to Nia. “And who is this?”
“Nia Olu,” she respectfully bowed her head.
“And you are a fighter too, no?”
“Um, not exactly. My father taught me how to fight when I was young, but I am a healer and a devotee of Bast.”
This was the first T’Challa had heard of her knowledge of combat, and he wondered what else he didn’t know about her.
“I’m sure it’s still in there somewhere. You have a warrior’s spirit.”
Nia was surprised by the priestess’ comment but thanked her nonetheless.
“Priestess Yaa, we have a problem that you might be able to help us solve,” the king stated.
Yaa nodded and called to her class, “Keep sparring. I’ll be back.”
The room came alive again, and Nia couldn’t help but watch the dozens of bodies moving about with powerful grace as they fought.
Yaa gestured for them to follow her, and she led them around a corner to get away from all the noise. “How can I help you, my king?”
“Bast is missing, and we would like to ask Kokou if he knows where she is,” he cut straight to the point, and Yaa appreciated his brevity.
She gestured again, and the four of them relocated to the other side of the temple. They entered a large, empty room with nothing except a wall of ancient weapons and a huge, raging fire pit in the center.
“This eternal flame was gifted to us by Kokou many millennia ago as a way of contacting him,” Yaa narrated. “In order for him to answer, you will each have to give a sacrifice.”
“I didn’t bring anything to-”
“Blood, dear. You sacrifice blood. He is the god of war, after all,” Yaa chuckled as she glided over to the wall of weapons. Her fingers danced along the flat side of the blade of a vibranium dagger with a red and gold hilt before wrapping her hand firmly around the grip and removing it from its position. Yaa tested the weight of it in her hand as she rejoined the group. Without warning, she sliced her palm open and allowed her blood to drip into the flame. The priestess noticed the look of horror on Nia’s face and attempted to quell her fears. “Don’t worry; you’ll only need a drop or two.”
Okoye was first to step up, pressing the dagger’s tip into her hand and drawing a small amount of blood. She handed the dagger to T’Challa as she made a fist and let her blood droplets fall into the fire pit. The king did the same before passing the dagger to Nia. She looked at it apprehensively, but T’Challa continued to hold it out for her to take.
“Go on, dear,” Yaa urged. “We will heal you up after.”
Nia and T’Challa locked eyes as they were both reminded of the night they became reacquainted with one another. T’Challa’s wound would quickly heal on its own, but she wouldn’t be able to use her powers to heal herself in Yaa’s and Okoye’s presence. She took a deep breath and tried to ignore the feeling of her palm stinging with the memory of alcohol pads. T’Challa knew where her mind had wandered to and took her formerly injured hand in his as he ran his thumb over her palm.
“It won’t be as bad as last time,” he whispered so only Nia could hear him. “Just a little cut, ok?”
Nia’s mouth dried up, and her eyes traveled to Okoye and Yaa. The priestess seemed intrigued by his tenderness towards her, but the irritation on Okoye’s face was clear as day. Nia remembered that he was a serial charmer and removed her hand from his. She reached for the dagger and quickly pricked her finger, squeezing a couple of droplets into the flame.
Yaa set the dagger aside to be cleaned and watched as the flames grew in intensity. All four of them stepped back when the fire surged towards the sky and took the vague shape of a man.
“Kokou,” Yaa fell to her knees, and the others followed her lead. “Thank you for answering our call.”
“Where is the fight?” his voice boomed around the expansive room as what looked to be his head swiveled from side to side taking in the four who summoned him. He had no eyes, but Nia felt his gaze land on her and linger for a moment too long.
“There is no fight this time, but we have an inquiry,” Yaa said as she stood.
“Very well,” Kokou’s voice rang out again, and the flames whipped in T’Challa’s direction. “What is so important that the king requires my assistance? Have you not a god of your own?”
T’Challa looked to Yaa for reassurance as he began to stand, and she nodded for him to continue. “Yes, I do, but she is missing.”
“Missing?! What do you mean missing?”
“She has not spoken to me in weeks, and Thoth has not seen or heard from her either.”
Kokou turned back to Nia. “And you have not heard from her?”
“No, sir,” Nia stood tall as she answered him.
“I am surprised she has not spoken to you of all...people,” he said with a mischievous lilt in his voice. Nia stilled as she realized that he knew what she was. She slyly made eye contact with T’Challa, and though his expression was unreadable, she knew he had to have heard it, too.
“You know, blood can tell you a lot about a person...or being,” Kokou began to pace around the large fire pit. “Who they are, what their lineage is...you, Nia, are very special. But I am sure you know that already, don’t you?”
Nia ignored the confused stares from Yaa and Okoye and stared straight into where she assumed Kokou’s eyes to be. “Yes, sir.”
“Good.”
“Kokou-”
“Patience, your highness,” the god chastised T’Challa, “I was getting to it. I just had to take a little detour first since you brought me such an interesting young lady. Now, to answer your question: sorry to disappoint, but no. I do not know where Bast is. I wish I did, though; she is an excellent sparring partner.”
Nia and T’Challa both deflated a little bit. They had hoped for a better answer than that.
“Thank you, Kokou,” T’Challa spoke with his head bowed to the god. The others did the same, and just as quickly as he had appeared, Kokou was gone.
--------
“Third time’s the charm,” T’Challa mumbled as he held the intricate iron gate open. Nia and Okoye walked through, and the general was blown away by the beauty before them. The botanical gardens sat on a protected stretch of land on the border between the Mining and River provinces, but people from all over the country traveled there to witness its splendor.
Nia, however, was no stranger to the gardens. She made sure to visit a few times a year just to sit and commune with the diverse group of plants, but she never knew it doubled as a place of worship. She liked that the gardens were never full of people, and depending on how deep she veered off the main walkways, she could avoid the public altogether. Except for the delightful presence of one of the attendants, Nia always managed to find solitude and serenity among the plants of the botanical gardens.
“Has this always been Mujaji’s temple?” she asked as the three of them followed the long, winding path that led to the greenhouses in the back of the gardens.
“As far as I’m aware. Why?”
“It’s just that I’ve been here before, and I never knew. I always felt like there was...something here, but I just assumed I was feeling the energy from all of the plants.”
“You can do that?” Okoye asked, and she caught another shared glance between Nia and the king. They had been doing that all day, and she was growing tired of it.
Nia opened her mouth to try to fix her slip-up, but she was saved when a young woman about her age emerged from behind a mango tree and recognized her colorful headwrap.
“Nia?”
“Sukutai!”
Nia ran over to her, and the women embraced. A smile crept up T’Challa’s cheeks at seeing Nia’s faint glow again, but, unfortunately, it seemed that Okoye might have seen it as well. The king ignored her pointed stares and continued to watch Nia and the woman from afar.
“What are you doing here? It’s been months since I saw you last!” Sukutai playfully scolded her before leaning in like she had a secret to tell. “You have to see the new fire lily blooms; I know they’re your favorite.”
“They are,” Nia chuckled, “but I’m here on business today.”
“Business?”
Nia gestured behind her, and Sukutai’s eyes widened in shock as she finally noticed T’Challa and Okoye standing in the distance.
“My apologies, my king,” she quickly saluted him, but he waved her off.
“None needed. Any friend of Nia’s is a friend of mine.”
Sukutai’s eyebrows almost reached her hairline as she turned back to Nia. “I know we don’t know each other very well, but how come you never told me you knew the king?”
“He’s new,” Nia shrugged nonchalantly.
Sukutai shook her head fondly at her friend as T’Challa and Okoye came to stand next to her.
“What brings you to my humble garden, your highness?”
“I would say this is anything but humble, priestess,” he chuckled. This time it was Nia’s turn to be surprised.
“Priestess?!”
“Yeah, I don’t like to advertise it,” Sukutai shrugged.
“Well, I guess we both have our secrets,” Nia teased, making her friend giggle.
“I guess we do.”
“Sukutai, we are here because we need to speak with Mujaji. Bast is missing and-”
“You need to see if he knows where she is.”
“Yes,” T’Challa nodded.
“Right this way,” Sukutai said as she stuck her elbow out for Nia. She wrapped her arm around it, and the two of them took off, chatting about the flora they passed on the way.
Sukutai led them to the back of the botanical gardens towards the greenhouses. There were several smaller ones scattered around that were about the size of Nia’s home, but the very last greenhouse was huge. It stood about two stories tall and expanded across an acre of land.
“How did I miss this?” Nia wondered aloud.
“You weren’t looking for it,” Sukutai winked. “Too distracted by the pretty flowers, as usual.”
“You should really pay more attention to your surroundings, Nia,” T’Challa teased, and she narrowed her eyes at him. Despite the fact that she was still very hesitant to trust Nia, Okoye had to stifle a chuckle at her attitude. It was refreshing for her to see a woman that seemed to be immune to his charms.
The four of them entered the greenhouse, and Nia was amazed at what she saw. Instead of beautiful flowers and lush trees and bushes, there were rows and rows of crops.
“I knew you had some fruit trees, but I didn’t know you grew other foods here, too,” she said with her mouth wide open.
“We have to. Who do you think taught us how to work the land?”
Nia nodded as she soaked up Sukutai’s words. It had never occurred to her that the humans had to learn agriculture from somewhere...or someone. She wondered if aziza had learned from him, too, and if so, why hadn’t she heard about it? Were their history books incomplete, too? Nia’s train of thought was cut short as they arrived at the center of the greenhouse. There was a large patch of soil surrounded by an old stone wall no more than two feet tall. A small plaque near the opening caught the visitors’ eyes, and they crowded around to read it.
“The first garden?” Nia gasped, and her eyes traveled to the rich soil.
Sukutai smiled proudly, “That’s right. This is where Wakandans first learned how to grow sorghum. Mujaji’s magic still inhabits the land, and he allows us to speak to him through it.”
“How does it work?” T’Challa asked, equally in awe of the plot of land that allowed his people to prosper. Yes, they had vibranium, but what use would that be without the ability to feed themselves? Had they remained hunter-gatherers, they never would have gotten to where they are today.
“I’ll show you,” Sukutai said as she untied her shoes. “Nia, would you like to help?”
“M-me?”
“Yes, you, silly. You have the heart and hands of a gardener.”
“What do you need me to do?”
“First thing’s first, shoes off,” Sukutai instructed, and Nia slid out of her sandals. “Now, you see those jars full of seeds over there?”
Sukutai gestured behind them, and they all turned around to follow her line of vision.
“Yes,” Nia’s voice shook as she spoke.
“Don’t worry about what each one is. Just go pick whichever one calls to you.”
Nia nodded and padded her way over to the table covered in glass jars. She felt the power radiating from each one, but she felt compelled to pick up a small jar full of green coffee beans. Her hand instinctively reached out to touch it, but she pulled back and looked to the priestess for permission.
“Go ahead, take one,” Sukutai urged, and Nia carefully screwed the top off. She reached in and grabbed one of the beans, and walked back over to Sukutai.
“Ok, how does this work?”
“We start with a yes or no question. Let’s try ‘Do you know where Bast is?’ and go from there, ok?”
“Ok.”
“Follow me.”
Sukutai stepped onto the sacred land, and Nia did the same. The ground seemed to vibrate, and Nia’s face lit up. The slight glow returned to her skin, and this time Okoye was sure in what her eyes beheld. She quickly turned towards T’Challa, who looked at her out of the corner of his eye but kept quiet. He shifted his weight away from her nervously and continued to watch Nia and Sukutai work.
“You feel it too, huh?” Sukutai asked with a sly smile on her face.
“It feels...it feels like my feet are buzzing.”
Sukutai’s head cocked to the side, and her eyes narrowed as she tried to understand exactly what was happening. Nia obviously wasn’t a priestess of Mujaji, yet his magic spoke to her in some way. That wasn’t normal, and neither was the faint highlight that appeared on her skin.
“Yeah, it does,” she agreed and shook the suspicions out of her head. She knelt to the ground, and Nia followed suit. “Hold the seed in your hands, close to your face- yes, just like that. Now, close your eyes and let it feel your energy. When you are ready, speak to it. Ask your question.”
Nia shut her eyes and focused on the feeling of the seed in her hands. She pictured it growing big and strong, and after a few moments, her mouth was filled with the taste of coffee. It was ready. She brought it closer to her lips and whispered, “Do you know where Bast is?”
When she peeled her eyes open, she saw a huge grin on Sukutai’s face.
“You’re a natural.”
“Thanks,” Nia giggled. “What now?”
“Now you plant it.”
“Anywhere?”
“Wherever you choose.”
Nia studied the ground around her and turned a little to the left. She held the seed in her left hand as she made a small mound in the dirt with her right. She gave the seed one last glance before pushing it into the soil.
“No water?” she asked.
Sukutai shook her head with a mischievous smile, “No need.”
“Ok...so now we wait?”
“It won’t take long. Usually about-” Sukutai’s eyes widened. “Look!”
Four sets of eyes trained on the tiny green sprout that pushed up from the ground.
“It’s never happened that fast before.”
The sprout turned into a seedling, and the seedling matured right before their eyes. Just as hope began to fill the air, it left, and the coffee plant shriveled up. The leaves turned brown, then a murky black before decomposing entirely. Everyone’s shoulders slumped in defeat, and silence descended upon the group. Without even asking, they all knew it was a resounding “no.”
--------
The silence was thick on the ride back to Nia’s. Okoye flew the Talon with a million questions running through her mind, all of which seemed to come back to Nia. Who is she? What is she?
Nia left her position by the window, no longer interested in the ground below, and met T’Challa by his sand table. She watched for a moment as the molecules dispersed and recollected themselves in the shapes of the temples they just visited and the gods they just contacted. He chewed on his lip as he tried to put the pieces together, but there just wasn’t enough information.
“T’Challa?” Nia spoke softly to keep Okoye from hearing.
“Hm?” he grunted without looking up.
“What if the problem isn't in this realm?”
The king tore his eyes away from the table, and the sand fell flat.
“You are suggesting we go to the magic realm?”
“Again with the ‘we,’” she sighed. “No, I’m suggesting I go to the magic realm.”
He stared at her blankly for a moment before calling out to Okoye, “General?”
“Yes, my king?”
“You will travel back to the palace alone-”
“No-” Nia tried to stop him.
“I will be staying with Nia a little while longer. I will call when I need you.”
“Yes, my king.”
Nia dragged her hand down her face, then immediately looked down and noticed the clay that had transferred to her palm. She pinched the bridge of her nose and groaned in frustration, both at the king and at her careless mistake.
“T’Challa, I just said-”
“I know what you said,” he snipped, “but this is my kingdom, and I need to know what’s going on.”
“But-”
“I’m going with you, and that’s final.” He turned away and joined Okoye in the cockpit.
Nia sat off to the side and pouted the rest of the way home. When they arrived, Okoye reluctantly left the king behind and flew off to the palace.
“She could’ve just stayed outside, you know,” Nia fussed as they entered her home. “Now she definitely knows something is up.”
He rolled his eyes, “She knew something was up the moment you started glowing.”
Nia froze and mentally kicked herself for not using the glamor spell her ubaba had taught her. She was in such a rush that morning that it completely slipped her mind. The smug look on T’Challa’s face made her want to slap him, so she stormed down the hall to her bathroom to fix her facepaint. As soon as she finished, Nia heard the king make a strange noise and looked out to see what he had done. A laugh erupted from her belly as she watched the king stand on the couch to get away from Sego. He glared at her, but his eyes promptly fell back on the python that was too close for comfort.
“Call off your snake!”
“Python,” she giggled. “Sego, stop messing with him, please.”
Sego turned her way, and Nia could see the playful look in his eyes. He thoroughly enjoyed messing with the king. T’Challa climbed down from the couch and let out a calming breath as Sego slithered away to the kitchen.
“So the mighty Black Panther is scared of pythons, huh?” she mocked him as she leaned against the doorframe.
“Not scared...I just don’t like them.”
“Mhm. If it makes you feel any better, he’s not fully a python. He’s a shifter.”
“Meaning…”
“Meaning sometimes he’s in his human form, sometimes he’s in his python form.”
T’Challa thought about it for a moment. “Actually, that does make me feel better. Thanks.”
Nia smirked and rolled her eyes.
“So,” T’Challa cleared his throat, “what now?”
“First, we go see my ubaba, then the queen.”
“Ok...how do we, you know, get there?”
“It’s easy,” she bragged as she walked over to him. “Give me your hand, and I’ll show you.”
Nia reached out to him, and when their hands connected, an image of the two of them sharing a feverish kiss popped into her mind. She gasped and pulled back as though she had touched a hot stove.
“What is it?!”
“N-nothing, I just,” she had to think of something quick. “My headwrap. I take it off when I go to the magic realm...to, uh, let my ears breathe, you know?”
“Um, ok.”
Nia hurried from the room and left T’Challa standing there, confused about what just happened. He knew she was lying despite the fact that her excuse had some semblance of truth to it. Thanks to the heart-shaped herb, T’Challa could hear her heartbeat, and something had caused her heart to almost beat out of her chest. His suspicions didn’t last for long, though, because when she came back from her room, his jaw dropped. Of course, he had noticed her beauty the first time, well the second time, he laid eyes on her, but as she came down the hallway fluffing her coils out into an afro that framed her face like an obsidian halo, he felt a knot form in his chest.
“Ready?” she asked, obviously over whatever had been bothering her.
“Yeah,” T’Challa cleared his throat. He was suddenly parched. “Ready.”
“Ok.” She grabbed his hands again, but this time there was no vision. Nia sighed in relief and looked him dead in his eyes as the atmosphere around them began to thicken. “Be cool. Don’t embarrass me.”

Royal (T’Challa)
Tumblr media
Summary: Things don’t go as planned when Freya Frost decides to sign the accords.
Warnings: death (at the end)
Word count: 1770
Part 2  Part 3  Part 4
Signing the accords was the right thing to do. I knew it would be forced upon us if we didn't make this choice today..it was better to give in then to fight those we were supposed to protect. I understood where Steve was coming from, I did, but as an ex-SHIELD operative I was used to being a part of something bigger and this wasn't exactly a strange concept for me.
I walked into a hallway, outside the conference room in a classy, knee-length, black dress. My black hair was flowing freely, cascading down my back in curls, my make up minimum with a touch of red lipstick to spice things up a little. I was a confident woman when it came to my looks as many men watched me with desire burning in their eyes. I was trained to use my looks as an advantage, but I never really enjoyed the attention I got. I preferred a man who would be drawn to me for reasons other than my body, I craved for someone to dig deeper to find out who I was beneath my femme fatale facade.
Watching the streets below the building we were in, I enjoyed a moment of peace. It was interrupted by a man with an accent I've never heard before.
„ Freya Frost. It's a pleasure to meet you.“ I turn to the unknown man and focus on the hand he offered for me to shake. Slowly, I take his hand prepared to give him a curt shake and turn back around, but he takes me by surprise as he lifts my hand up, bending to meet it in the air, his lips connect with my skin and I feel a shiver run down my spine. His lips hold their ground for a few moments longer before he lifts his head and locks eyes with me. His eyes were a beautiful brown, so dark I thought they may be black as night. I believe that eyes are a window to someone's soul. They show your humanity, who you are as a person. In that moment, we held onto each other’s hand, our eyes connecting our souls in a way I've never felt before. We looked into each other's souls and in that moment we created a bridge of sorts. There was something about his gaze I knew I'd never find in another man and it made my fire burn brighter than ever.
„I'm sorry. Am I supposed to know you?“ My voice was filled with fake sweetness that was meant to cover up my shaken state. I didn't need this man to see how vulnerable I felt at the moment. Let's just say I wasn't keen on letting people in, especially strangers.
„No apologies necessary. I'm T'Challa.“ He introduces himself and I look him up and down, not even trying to be sly about it. He wore a well fitted navy blue suit with a white shirt underneath and a tie to complete the classy look. He couldn't be much older than me, almost all traces of boyhood were erased. He was rather handsome and the way he held himself was a little odd for a regular person. It would best be described as a royal stance, he oozed nobility and power. If he was nervous to be around me, he definitely hid it well. I was intrigued to say the least, but I didn't feel the need to engage in a conversation or know more. I just lost one guy I cared for, I wasn't interested in adding anyone else in the mix. I missed Steve, but this was for the best.
„Nice to meet you. If you'll excuse me, I should take my seat.“ I say with a small smile before walking away in the direction of the conference room. I had a feeling like someone was watching me, so I slightly turned around and noticed the young man's gaze following my retreating figure. He seems to be smitten...like all the others..And I thought he might be a bit different.
I take my seat next to Natasha and watch the young man from before approach us.
„Don't look, but a creepy stalker is on his way here.“ I tell her quietly and she furrows her eyebrows in confusion.
„I suppose neither of us is used to the spotlight.“ He says and we both turn to him. I plaster a fake smile on my face and his eyes flicker between me and Natasha.
„Oh, well, it's not always so flattering.“ Natasha replies with a touch of sass.
„You seem to be doing alright so far. Considering your last trip to Capitol Hill... I wouldn't think you would be particularly comfortable in this company.“ He states with a light smile, focusing on her. I didn't like the envy that bubbled inside me as they conversed.
„Well, I'm not.“ Nat answered, crossing her arms over her chest.
„That alone makes me glad you're here, Miss Romanoff. You too, Miss Frost.“ T'Challa says, allowing his eyes to linger on me a little longer. I felt heat rush to my cheeks, but I refused to be the one to break eye contact.
„Why? You don't approve of all this?“ Nat questioned and he turned to her. I win this round.
„The Accords, yes. The politics, not really. Two people in a room can get more done than a hundred.“ He answered and I realized he was more of a fighter than a talker. I was like that too, not fond of talking things out, rather get it all out in the open with my fists in the air.
„Unless you need to move a piano.“ King T'Chaka interjected with a smile.
„Father.“ T'Challa said making me scream internally. He was the prince?! I knew there was a royal aura around him!
„Son. Miss Romanoff. Miss Frost.“ The King addressed us.
„King T'Chaka. Please, allow me to apologize for what happened in Nigeria.“ Natasha said.
„We wish we could have done better. Things got out of hand and we couldn't control the situation. We are really sorry.“ I added and the King nodded in acknowledgement as the Prince's eyes found mine again.
„Thank you. Thank you for agreeing to all this. I'm sad to hear that Captain Rogers will not be joining us today.“ The King said making me look at the ground and clench my fists. I didn't want to be reminded of him today. I needed a clean break. I wouldn't say I was in love with Steve, but I was emotionally invested. Thing is, I thought it was a good idea to let in a person who was hung up on someone who was almost a hundred at the time. When she died and the accords came up...things between us were just too chaotic and I didn't really feel like dealing with it. I cared for him...deeply, but my heart was my own.
„Yes, so are we.“ Nat said and I looked up once I heard a man ask us to take our seats.
„That is the future calling. Such a pleasure.“ T'Challa said as he took my hand, giving it a gentle kiss once more, never once breaking eye contact. I nodded with a tight-lipped smile and walked away, hearing Nat thank them and follow me.
„What was that?“ She asked me once we were seated and I upheld a neutral face expression.
„I don't know what you're talking about.“ I respond.
„You called the prince a stalker and he kissed your hand. Did I miss something?“ She questioned with a coy smile and I turned to her, slightly pouting.
„We met outside. He was...interesting for a moment.“ I replied with a shrug and she slapped me on the side.
„A prince is courting you! You lucky little..“ I stop her before she says something I'll have to punch her for.
„I am not interested.“ I respond, losing a little bit of calmness I tried to keep so badly.
„He certainly is. His eyes never left you. Look.“ She nods in his direction discretely and I turn to find him staring at me with a hint of a smile.
„Shut up!“ I whisper-shout and she wiggles her eyebrows suggestively.
„When stolen Wakandan vibranium was used to make a terrible weapon, we in Wakanda were forced to question our legacy. Those men and women killed in Nigeria, were part of a goodwill mission from a country too long in the shadows. We will not, however, let misfortune drive us back. We will fight to improve the world we wish to join. I am grateful to the Avengers for supporting this initiative.“ The King speaks as T'Challa spots something outside, breaking his concentration.
„Wakanda is proud to extend its hand in peace.“ T'Chaka says as T'Challa shouts suddenly, startling everyone.
„EVERYBODY GET DOWN!“ He jumps to cover his father as an enormous explosion goes off between two buildings and destroys the better part of the conference hall. I fell to the floor, covering my head with my hands like they'd protect me or something. I wasn't sure if I was more angry about the attack or the fact this ruined my dress. I knew I was bleeding as I felt the liquid flowing freely on my forehead. The aches in other parts of my body alarmed me of more damage, but I was breathing and that's what mattered. Natasha was already walking around, looking at the state of the room. My eyes searched for T'Challa as he stood closest to the blast. I saw him crawling to his father who was lying on the floor with his eyes closed. He grabbed his wrist, searching for a pulse, but his father was unmoving and I could tell he wouldn't find one. Devastation was written on his face once he came to the same realization. He lifts him up and rocks him in his arms, shaking as the pain of losing his father hits him.
I felt sorry for him, but I was of no help. I didn't know what to say or how to comfort someone who was grieving. I wasn't very good with sadness and pain. I looked at him defeated, knowing this was only going to get worse. Things like this always escalated quickly and if I knew one thing about T'Challa, he was not a man to take his beating and stay down. He was a fighter, it was clear from the way he spoke earlier. He will seek revenge and if he's anything like me...God help those who have wronged him.

Like a Cream Puff (T’Challa x OC)
Prompt: “You deserve some sex.”
Word Count: 1,072
Warnings: Domestic Fluff & Implied Sexual References
Tumblr media
She caught sight of the box from her favourite bakery and sat right up.
“Did you get the one with the —“
“Lychee? Yes.” He replied busying himself around the room and plating the large cream puffs.
His back was turned as he shuffled around the various takeout bags on their chest of drawers.
She caught a glimpse of the Popeyes bag in his hand and bit her lip in anticipation.
“Did you get the chicken mild? Because the spicy one —“
He cut her off. “Gives you heartburn? I know that mama.” He replied in amusement, back still turned.
“And I asked for lemonade. The one from —“
“Burger King? It’s right here.” He continued lifting up the large cup and shaking it lightly.
Perspiration beaded on the exterior of the cup and Corina heard the ice meet the sides rhythmically. It soothed her.
She was probably doing the most but she couldn’t help it.
When he shot her a look over his shoulder she smiled sheepishly.
He walked over with a plate of cream puffs and chicken tenders and placed them on the nightstand, before sitting on the edge of the bed.
He grabbed her hand in his. Admiring the smooth skin
He pinched the inside of her wrist softly and her eyes shot up to meet his.
“I listen to everything you say. I may not say much but I lock it away right up here.” He pointed to his temple with one hand while rubbing circles on her hand in the other.
“I know… thank you. I don’t know what I’d do without you.” She leaned forward and placed a grateful kiss on his cheek.
“Go ahead.” He encouraged her to eat what she had asked him for.
She reached for the plate, settled it on her lap and paused.
Her eyes began to water. What had she done to deserve this man?
It was 8:30pm on a Sunday night and they had just packed in for the night. Corina was 7 months along her second pregnancy but never got less demanding when it came to her cravings.
So when she tried (and failed) to curb her wants she had sheepishly asked her husband for the snacks their baby demanded.
T’challa got up without complaint to get what she wanted even though he had a slew of meetings the next day.
Without question.
“You always take such good care of me”. Before she could stop them tears were rolling down her face, she tried to blink them away rapidly.
Her damn hormones had her crying *all* the time.
He had an almost baffled look on his face.
“Of course I do. You’re my everything. I’ll always take care of you and your needs. You’re my woman. It's my job.”
He brushed away the tears that slid down her face with his fingers.
“No more crying please.” He requested.
She laughed in a watery fashion before quickly wiping away her tears. She sniffed.
“Okay.”
“Now eat your chicken before it gets cold.”
“Yes sir.” She threw up a mock salute.
Ignoring his direct request she went for the cream puffs instead. Grabbing the large pastry with a delicate hand. She lifted it to her mouth and bit into the cream puff and couldn't contain her moan.
The cream had a slight tartness to it and the crisp of the pastry created a melody in her mouth.
She heard him laughing quietly to himself.
“That good huh?”
“Uh huh.” She nodded as she licked some cream from the center of the puff.
He watched as she did a little happy dance before taking a chicken tender in her other hand and biting into it.
She shimmied her shoulders as she chewed.
He loved seeing her like this. Happy. Fulfilled.
“T’challa you deserve some sex. After this I’m going to give you some.” she promised shoulders still moving.
He shook his head at her, adorning eyes admiring her.
“Sounds like a plan.” He said knowing that as soon as his wife finished her food she would knock right out.
When she made it to the end of her tender she did the most pregnant woman thing ever. Almost like she was fighting an urge she dipped the chicken tender in the cream and popped it in her mouth.
T’challa worked hard to school his features, but had to turn his head to the wall to prevent himself from teasing.
“It’s good.” She said defensively.
“I’m sure it is mama.” He pat her leg before standing up and heading to his closet to change back into his sleepwear.
It gave Corina enough time to polish off her snacks and wash her hands.
She had just finished settling into the bed when she saw her man approach.
He was shirtless and wore a pair of sleep shorts that hit his mid thigh. Quite frankly he was dressed like a slut. She wanted some of that.
She stared at his thighs hungrily and he was completely oblivious to her oogling.
When he settled into the bed and reached to turn his lamp off Corina's hand stopped him.
He turned his head slightly.
“What’s up?”
“It’s your turn.”
“Hm?”
She leaned over and slipped what she could of her hand around his torso. Her bump restricted her movements but she was a woman on a mission
He covered her hand with his in comfort.
“It's time for you to fill me up like a cream puff.”
T’Challa gave her a blank stare before cringing.
“That… that was so bad.” He snickered.
“C’mon baby. I want it.” She pouted, sliding her hand over her husband's package.
She rubbed him gently before trying to slip her hand down his shorts.
“Cor —“
He turned around and grabbed her hands, now he was facing her.
“What’re you doing?” He asked esparated.
She looked down. “This one may want some company in there.”
She rubbed her belly looking up at him with wide eyes. She watched him swallow. She decided to press forward.
“You never know.” She shrugged.
Now they both knew that was very impossible. But T'challa's dick liked hearing it anyways.
He groaned.
She knew how much he loved her pregnant and this was all she needed to use to get him right when she wanted him.
Inside her.

Hey Guys!!
[ART BLOG: @disaster-sketches-marvel]
I've never written smut before, so please don't judge my first stories too harshly and feel free to give feedback!
The purpose of this blog is 'cause I can literally count the T'Challa x Nakia main pairing fanfics on my fingers, and there is like, hardly any smut for it, even though it is a wonderful ship.
Though there are good T'Challa x Reader smuts, I feel that there could be more to stories, and given the potential of Wakandan Royalty and all, why nott? :D
Besides, I can't find a SINGLE Star Lord T'Challa smut, and only a few fanfics, and I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY noone sees potential...
My Blog will (hopefully) contain more characters like T'Challa's parents, Okoye, T'Challa's grandparents, and some Wakandan OCs!
Please do request anything that's:
> Overage - (I do only romance fics for below 18. Anything sexual in there will either only be about exploration of identity or involve almost matured teenagers)
> Queer or Straight - (I'll do queer relationships as long as the trope/prompt isn't homophobic, cause I've seen weird ones lately)
> Not non-con - (There’s always gonna be some kind of understanding or consent in my smutfic)
> Not Incest - (I won't say you're not safe here, but don't expect T'Cherik or anything over here)
> Oneshots - I'll try my best :)
Again, I'll say, please feel free to tell me if there's something problematic about my work and explain it to me so that I'll learn something new. <3

okay part 3 sorry this took so long i have been swamped with work
Part 2 which has the link to part one
so Riley is in Wakanda under the watchful eye of Tchalla who she finds out is pretty cool after being too nervous to talk to a literal king for about a few weeks.
She finally talks to him and Tchalla asks what she does with her time at home and she mentions training with her dad
Tchalla lights up at this and introduces her to the Dora Milaje(is that how you spell that?)
So Riley is now training with the Dora every day and they are all surprised at her skill (cuz of course sam taught her well) and they decide to upgrade her sparring weapons to some actual top grade stuff(wow lil great word choice)
So she joins Okoye at the lab
shes a little early and so she waits at one of the desks until she hears:
"WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY LAB?!"
Riley jumps and turns around to see the most beautiful girl shes ever seen in her life
"Um... I'm Riley, Riley Wilson."
"an American huh?"
"Yeah I'm just staying here for a little bit thanks to your brother"
"Oh! so I'm guessing he's given you the official tour?"
"Yeah I guess..."
"Well your getting a better more awesome one from me! right now"
"Uhhh... cool? I'm sorry who are you again?"
"Oh right! I'm shuri, the genius behind my idiot brothers kingdom."
SO shuri leads a gobsmacked riley around Wakanda leading back to the lab where she finally gives her her weapons
They don't see each other for another week due to each of their busy schedules
Over the time they are apart Riley can't stop thinking about the princess (and the same fr shuri) and they both develope a bit of a crush
The Doras notice this and so do Nakia and Tchalla and they all decide to get the two awkward teens together.
Meanwhile every few weeks Sam tries to call Riley from a random telephone booth
Riley ignores the calls every time
Tchalla also keeps in touch with Sam sending him videos of Riley training process
Sam watches these an they become the thing that gets him through his life on the run with steve and nat
riley and Shuri finally meet up again and Riley goes full wilson flirt mode refusing to call shuri anything other than princess which makes shuri go all red in the face
But it is actually Shuri who asks Riley on the first date which completely stops Riley in her tracks but Shuri just says
Come on Wilson did you really think I was just gonna let you flirt forever?
Come back for part 4!

Act 1: While We’re Young
Chapter 5
Erik ‘Killmonger’ Stevens x Black OC
Tumblr media
(Unedited.)
Tuesday
January 10th 2005
Last night was the only night I'm allowing myself to cry over him and his 'return'. What good would it do me? No, I was gonna take Erik and whatever he had to throw at me by storm.
Waking up the next day, I feel refreshed. Like a brand new person with a more positive mindset. Today I had 3 classes and I'm determined to have a good Erik free day.
That whole Erik free thing went out the window as soon as I got to my first class.
Double O Computer Programming 1 was a junior class, however I'd taken it during the summer during my first year at UC Berkeley. DOCP 2 wouldn't be available until next semester but I needed to have a class since this was my first year on the actual campus. Thankfully Miss Hill really needed a T.A and the fact that I could help with an algorithm that tied into thermal nuclear astrophysics had her sold.
Tumblr media
Right after I finished taking attendance, she barely got a word out before the door swung open revealing Erik as our late comer. I quickly glanced at the sheet in front of me, scanning for his name. I was so use to calling him N’dajaka when we were kids, I completely skipped over ‘Erik Stevens’. I huffed rolling my eyes, arms crossed over my chest. His timbs were the only thing heard shuffling across the room making hid way toward the front of the class. Wordlessly he handed Miss Hill before his eyes were on me. They scanned me from top to bottom, before locking with me a smug grin on his lips.
"Hey Lona," my jaw dropped.
Before I could get out a word, Miss Hill opened her mouth, looking up from the paper he handed her.
"Welcome Erik, sorry for the confusion."
"It's all good," he shrugged.
"Im Miss Hill, and I see you already know my aid. As I explained to the class prior to taking attendance, If I'm unavailable feel free to email or call her during the hours listed on the sheet." She is then took a sheet from me and handed him to me. "Other than that, find a seat."
He nodded pretending look over the sheet before averting his gaze back on me.
"I'm definitely gon do that."
Fuck my life right?
Well, Erik just so happened to be in the Calculus class I skipped two days ago. I thank God my record was squeaky clean and Mr. Kennedy accepted my poor excuse before I was quickly reminded the man upstairs has a sense of humor as the only available seat was next to Erik.
"The person next to you will be your partner for the remainder of the semester so let's take the next 15 minutes getting know one another hmm?." Mr. Kennedy instructed.
I couldn't suppress the groan that slipped as Erik casually leaned back in his chair, examining me.
"You heard the man, get to know me."
"I know all I need this know about you Erik."
"Oh so I'm Erik now? Like that?" He spoke cool, calm, and collected like our exchanged was normal.
I gripped my pencils tight, my knee bouncing up and down my body tense.
"Let me set things straight now. We don't need to talk to one another. If it doesn't have anything to do with any of the classes we take together, don't want to hear it. When you see me act like you don't know me. We clear?"
The expression on his face was unreadable before his lip twitched slight him responding.
"Crystal."
Wednesday
January 24th, 2005
It had been two weeks since Erik showed up here.
Ok that's a lie.
Apparently this man has been here. And to top it off, this mans name was in every bitch mouth like the second coming of Jesus Christ. From what I've observed though, he doesn't say much, or gives any of these broads much attention. He don't say much in general actually, he's really good at blending in. He got that laid back, mysterious, bad boy vibe going for him and these females out here hella into that.
But when he opens his mouth, that cocky bastard sure knows how to disrupt my entire soul at least while we're in class.
Outside of class though, he acts like I'm invisible.
It was like he never knew me. And honestly, I don't know how to feel about it. I know that's what I said I wanted but it bothers me just the same.
Today in particular though, he argued me down during our Calculus class. We had one problem to figure out before we could leave class today. You and your partner were supposed agree on the answer, and heaven forbid he just agree with me so we can get out of here. Math was always my subject when we were kids, nothing has changed. I was damn near about to say fuck it when he started laughing.
What in the entire fuck it so funny?" I was fuming.
"You," he shook his head. "You really hella mad."
"Um, YES!" I damn near shouted fed up. "You literally been tryna convince me it's 5 when it's-"
"Chill. I know the answer is 3 girl. C'mon, let's go." So smoothly he closed the book, grabbed his bag and headed to the front.
I was so upset, I had to let him do all the talking when it came to explain to the teacher I'll answer and how we got there. I know I open my mouth I wasn't going to say anything nice.
"Girl what crawled up your ass and died?" Donise questioned with a stank look as we sat at one of the benches outside of the library.
"Yeah What did Erik do now," I could hear teasing in Tatiana's tone so I flipped her off.
Only giving a brief explanation, I went on a mini rant about what happened in class 20 minutes ago. Donise's thought it was funny, while Tati just shook her head.
"I still can't believe it him," Tatianna glanced as a group of guys from across the quad headed our way, Erik included.
"Yes, and I wish it wasn't."
Tatianna was the first real friend I made in a while. I was actually tutoring her online for a while before she found out I was 4 years younger than her. Our friendship started off as a trade. I was her tutor and she both convinced and enrolled in a mentor program to help me with my social skills. I didn't speak to anyone much when Erik left, but I got into a lot of fights. According to the school counselor I was taking out my anger and abandonment issues on.I have meds to tame the anger, and while I haven't had to take them in a while Eric definitely bring that anger out of me.
"Girl that's just sexual tension. You got to fuck all that out." Ashley put in her unwanted two cents.
"Trust me when I tell you on God it isn't."
"Well if you out to holla, then trust and believe I will." She tossed her hair over her shoulder
I didn't really mess with Ashley like that, but she was Tati's frat sister which made them 'friends'. That little thot pocket will screw anything with legs, D, and a pulse and I'm not bout that life. Plus she messy as fuck and I don't trust her as far as I can throw her.
"I don't doubt it," I smirked as Donise said exactly what I was thinking.
Donise was coo' though, I meet her when I first got here 2 months ago. Believe It or not she was apart of the welcome comity for MIT and turned out her and Tatiana were already friends. Once she figured out  who I was, I was shot to the front line during registration and everything.
"Anyways, y'all going Ant and them party tomorrow?" Ashley questioned probably tryna bum a ride.
"What party?"
"The Que's," Donise answered. "The dudes with Erik are frat."
Now this was news to me. I met most of them before but I had no idea there were in a sorority. Examining them, I guess it all made sense. Most in the clique sported some sort of purple and yellow lanyard either around their neck or on their keychain that hung from their jean pocket as if  they wanted everybody to know who they were. Which I wouldn't doubt.
"Ladies! What we chattin about?" Moses questions every bit of his thick English accent tapering off every word.
"Our plans for mañana," Tati answered l
"Word. Y'all coming to the party tomorrow?" Jay spoke playing with a few strands of Donise's curls.
"Tomorrow? It's Thursday." I said confused. "Ain't there class the next day?"
"What's the matter, you can't hang?" I glared at Jay, knowing he was only chastising me because him and Erik were close, according to Tati.
I swear to God men gossip more than women do. Rolling my eyes I spared Erik a glance and he looked like he was waiting on me to respond.
"Oh, I can definitely hang."
I couldn't hang.
Around midnight I was  in the bathroom throwing up everything, damn near hug in the toilet as my surrounding looks so blurry and I can barely function. Im not sure when I'd finally finished, but I could feel someone picks me up and out the bathroom and soon everything goes blurry and then black.

Stark Spangled Banner Ch 57: We’re In The Endgame Now
Tumblr media
Intro The Time Heist worked, but at a cost. Natasha gave her life for the Soul Stone. Following a promise to make her sacrifice worth something, the Avengers continued their plan and succeeded in reversing the Snap. But along with everyone else, the biggest threat the Avengers have ever faced re-appeared.
Thanos.
Now Steve and Katie, along with the rest of their team are locked in a fearsome battle, between light and dark, life and death. Simply put, it’s a battle which they cannot afford to lose because they’re in the Endgame now…
Warnings:
“Language!”
Character death. Please have your tissues ready…there’s gonna be tears.
Pairing: Steve Rogers x OFC Katie Stark
Stark Spangled Banner Masterlist
So…I’m REALY nervous about this one!! I hope I do it justice. It flits between perspectives so I hope you can follow it, and used a lot of visuals too...  Please re-blog and leave your thoughts xxx
Tumblr media
"Baby…” Steve heard Katie’s voice, it was desperate, shattered, and something else inside him broke even more. “You gotta get up…” she pleaded, shaking his shoulder, “Come on…”
Steve grit his teeth as he rolled to the side, Katie’s hand still on his shoulder as he rest against his forearm, trying to muster the strength to get up.
“Come on…” Katie whispered, “We need to try, keep him distracted until Tony and Thor come round….hopefully the others can find their way back to the surface. And then if we can get the stones we can end this.” It was a long shot, beyond long in fact. Steve knew that. Katie knew that. But whilst there was hope…no matter how small a hope it was, or how beaten they felt, they had to try. Steve turned his head to look over his shoulder at his wife. Her face plate was open and there were tears streaking down her cheeks. She looked at him and then glanced to her left, and he saw utter hatred and fear cloud her pretty face.
“In all my years of conquest, violence, slaughter... it was never personal.” Thanos spoke as Katie and Steve both glared at him, from their vantage point on the floor, Katie almost shielding Steve with her body as she knelt by his side. “But I'll tell you now, what I'm about to do to your stubborn, annoying little planet...I'm gonna enjoy it. Very, very much.”
And then, as they watched, behind Thanos, a blue light shot down and when it dissipated it left what looked like thousands of soldiers stood in rows. Thanos had brought his entire army. The so called Children of Thanos, Chitauri, those damned dog things they had fought in Wakanda...
Katie took a shaky breath, and let out a sob as she realised that any hope they had was gone. They might have, just might have stood a chance against Thanos alone, but not against his full army. She locked eyes with his Steve before he looked down at the ground, away from her eyes.  More of her tears fell as she understood this was it. This was the end. For them, for their kids, for the world.
According to some, there’s a calm serenity that descends on you when you know you’re time is up. But Steve didn’t feel calm, he felt anger, hatred…all towards himself. This was down to him, he’d brought this upon his family, his friends…he should have left those fucking stones in the past and dealt with his feelings of failure. Instead, here he was, a failure again. Beaten on a battlefield by the very man they actually killed some 5 years previously that was now about to wipe out the entire world. How fucked up was that?
“We are not going like this…” Katie said, openly sobbing as she shook her head, looking from Steve to the assembled army. “Not like this. We stand up, and we go fighting, you hear me?”
“You always get up Stevie, ya hear?” his Ma looked at him, wiping the blood from his split lip, ignoring his flinch. “No matter how hard they hit ya, you never give them the satisfaction of stayin’ down, lad, never. You push back, and eventually they’ll realise that they can’t fight forever...”
He glanced at the broken shield on his arm, swallowing as he remembered Jamie looking at him when he told him he used to be Captain America. His beautiful baby boy’s eyes that were so like Steve’s mother’s, wide with awe, and pride.
“You were Captain America?” Jamie frowned. “When you fighted with the Avengers?”
“Yeah” he sighed, running his hand through Jamie’s golden hair “I was.”
“Are you now?”
“I dunno.” Steve said, glancing back at his shield.
“I think you are” Jamie cocked his head to one side as his hand reached out to touch the shield. “Because Cap’s a hero and you’re my hero”
Well fuck this. Katie was right, his Ma was right. If he was going, then he was going down fighting. Alongside his best gal, his partner, the woman who gave him more strength than any serum ever could.
He pushed himself to his feet, teeth grit, fierce determination across every line on his face. With a shaking hand he tightened the leather straps on his broken shield around his arm and stood tall, turning to Katie.
“I love you.” he choked out, holding out his right hand to grip her left “’til the end of the line.” She turned to him, her eyes streaming with tears before she reached up and pulled his face to hers, pressing a fierce kiss to his lips.
“The very end…” she stuttered out, before they turned to face their death.
Man and Wife walked slowly towards Thanos, who simply stood, his head cocked to his right. They’d barely made it 4 foot however, when their communicators started crackling.
“Hey, Cap, you read me?”
It was faint…and broken…but it was a voice they hadn’t heard in 5 years other than in their nightmares about that fateful day they failed in Wakanda. A voice they would never forget.
Sam.
Both of them stopped dead, Steve’s mouth dropped open and he looked at Katie, raising a shaking hand to his head in an attempt to press the comms piece further into his ear. They both turned to each other, their faces shocked, not quite sure whether to believe if they were hearing things or...
“Cap, it's Sam. Can you hear me?”
Both Katie and Steve’s chests rose and fell deeply as they tried to understand where Sam was. They knew Banner's snap had worked, but surely if everyone came back where they had vanished then they should be in Wakanda. Nevertheless, Steve instinctively glanced upwards, and Sam spoke again.
“On your left.”
Tumblr media
They both turned, seeing a sparkling yellow circle to the left of Steve. As they watched, utterly dumbfounded, three figures stepped through and Katie realised from their Silhouettes alone who it was- Okoye, Shuri, and T’Challa in his full Black Panther garb. Katie’s hand flew to her mouth as T'Challa's mask faded away to look at Steve. The soldier breathed shakily and relieved and thankful smile broke through the filth and grime that covered his face. T'Challa gave him a small nod, before he turned to Katie and bowed slightly, the way he always did.
Katie’s breathing suddenly became erratic as she gripped Steve’s hand and the sobs began again, but this time they were punctuated by laughs, laughs and stutters of utter relief which turned into a yell of pure joy when Sam zoomed in above them in his Falcon armour. They watched as he flew and circled back round, Katie ’hands flying into the back of her hair, gripping as she doubled over and sobbed, simply unable to believe it.
Steve could do nothing but watch in a relieved, thankful and astounded awe as dozens and dozens more portals opened up all around the battlefield. He knew who the man that descended at the front was- Doctor Strange and he was joined by 3 people he also knew to be Rocket’s friends- The Guardians of the Galaxy- then came Spider-Man, his mask flopping down to reveal an alive and well Peter Parker behind it. Katie tore her eyes away to look for Tony who was now sitting up, a look of utter shock on his face. He found her eyes and gave a small twitch of his mouth as he scrambled to his feet, and turned to Thor who was now grinning ear to ear as he watched the portal that was bringing Valkyrie and the Asgardian army to their aid. Katie could heard chanting now and she turned to see the full Wakandan Army stepping through another portal headed by Bucky. The number of people arriving to support the Avengers rose as Dr Strange continued to conjure portals, and Katie screamed as a familiar red energy alerted them both to Wanda’s appearance, where she landed not far from Bucky, her eyes blazing. And then, with a clang Pepper landed a few feet away from Katie clad in her own Iron Suit and Tony joined them, shooting his wife a proud look. Finally there was a loud roaring, crashing noise and Katie and Steve spun to see Scott Lang as the Giant-Ant Man emerging from the rubble with Banner, Rhodey, Rocket and Clint.
The group of thousands behind Katie and Steve up their fighting stances, brandishing whatever weapons or powers they had, Steve looked around, almost bursting into tears himself at the emotions flooding his chest. He glanced at his wife who looked back, wiping her eyes, her breathing still deep as she couldn’t quite believe how all these people had come to help. Steve didn’t either, but all he knew was they had. And now they were almost if not completely equal on numbers. And they had hope once more.
In fact, they had more than hope. They had a chance. And that was good enough for the Captain. He’d beaten worse odds before, and he was damned sure they could do it again, especially when he turned to look at Thanos and saw for the first time something that looked like fear, apprehension even on the Titan’s face.
He turned to face Katie again as she gave him a nod.
“Call it Captain…” she said, her voice full of determination as her face plate slid back into place.
And call it he did.
“AVENGERS!” his cry echoed across the battle field as he held out his hand, summoning Mjolnir to his palm. Thor landed by his side just as the hammer slapped into Steve’s glove and he glared up at Thanos, his teeth grit with utter determination “ –Assemble.”
Behind him Thor gave a loud battle cry as did Black Panther and the Avengers’ army began to charge. Katie, Tony and Pepper flying almost in formation as they sped forward. Almost instantly the two sides collided violently, and the fighting began. Bullets, beams, punches, kicks, knives, spears, all flying and smashing against one another. The air was filled with yells, grunts and the clanging of metal against metal.
Thor and Steve found themselves fighting off a large group of the dog like creatures and somehow Steve ended up holding Stormbreaker. Not for long, because that belonged to Thor. His Thanos killing axe. No way was the God of Thunder letting the Captain wield that.
“No no, give me that…”  he held out his hand, tossing him Mjolnir. "You can have the little one,"
Katie, Tony and Pepper were circling back to back in a 3, their booster beams shooting at anything and everything, spiralling into groups of the warriors, helping anyone they could. Katie spotted that Clint was swamped a little so she flew down, freeing him before she shot into the air and found herself flying along side Sam.
“Mrs R…”he turned to face her and she gave him a nod.
“Good to see you Sammy…” she smiled.
“You know me, never one to miss a good fire fight!” he smirked, shooting his semi-autos at something that was flying into the air in front of him.
Tony shot down, barrelling into a group of Chitauri warriors, just like he had in New York. With a whoop he scattered them like bowling pins, landing and shooting off guns and beams, before something hit him hard on the side of the head and sent him flying. He landed, and pushed himself up on his elbows ready to fight but at the same time the Giant Ant-Man crushed his assailant.
And then, the kid was there. Peter was running straight to Tony. In the suit Tony had made for him. The Billionaire blinked, retracting his helmet as Pete’s usual, incessant and enthusiastic rambles filled his ear.
“Hey! Holy cow! You will not believe what's been going on. Do you remember when we were in space? And I got all dusty? I must've passed out ‘cause I woke up, and you were gone. But Doctor Strange was there, right? He was like, "It's been five years. Come on, they need us." And then he started doing the yellow sparkly thing that he does all the time..” he started using two fingers to demonstrate Strange's swirl in the air but Tony stopped him, the emotions of seeing the kid alive again were swirling in his chest, and with watery eyes he stepped forward and pulled the kid into a hug.
“What are you doing?...” Peter said, shocked at his mentor’s display of affection before he hugged Tony back. “This is nice”
The fight raged on and on and on. But no one gave up, they knew they had no option but to win this, for the sake of everything and everyone on the planet, and none more than Steve, who was fighting with every goddamned bit of strength he had to get back to his kids and his wife and finally buy that fucking holiday home in Orlando that Katie had been eyeing up.
Across the field he could just about make out Clint, who was sprinting like his life depended on it. Which, in fairness, it did. The gauntlet was clutched to his chest and he spoke into his comms, asking his leader for instructions.
“Cap, what do you want me to do with this damn thing?”
“Get those stones as far away as possible!” Steve instructed, punching another creature in the head.
“No!” Banner yelled back “We need to get them back where they came from.”
“No way to get them back” Tony sighed “Thanos destroyed the quantum tunnel”
“Hold on…” Lang spoke, and Steve saw the 100 foot or so man shrink out of the air "That wasn't our only time machine!"
The sound of Scott’s van horn, rang out across the battle ground and Steve immediately ran up to higher ground, trying to spot the van, following the noise.
"Anyone see an ugly, brown van up there?" Steve asked, looking up.
Katie shot above him and he watched her as she circled over the fighting armies before she stopped, hovering and pointing down underneath her
“Yes!” She yelled victoriously, as Valkyrie flew alongside her on her winged horse, shooting her a look.
“You're not going to like where it's parked!” The Asgardian finished, pointing her spear to it.
Tony flew up into the air shooting another Chitauri warrior off his…well, whatever the hell you called those flying scooter things before he glanced down at Lang.
“Scott, how long you need to get that thing working?”
“Maybe ten minutes”.
“Get it started.” Rogers instructed  We'll get the stones to you.”
And then as Tony watched, ready to cover Lang as he broke for it, a woman materialised next to him. Nothing should surprise Tony anymore, nothing, but it did. And he had absolutely no idea why.
“We're on it, Cap.” she spoke softly, before they pair of them shrunk again and FRIDAY kept a lock on them as they flew away, no bigger than ants.
Ok, so maybe Lang didn’t need covering after all. Tony watched them via FRIDAYS scanners as they flew towards the van, and saw Katie and Pepper fighting in tandem, the pair of them bringing down a huge Chituari beast that looked like a gorilla. He grinned at the sight of his wife and sister kicking ass, and then spotted Strange in the corner of his eye, trapping a load of Chitauri in his magic, sending them through portals. Recalling the conversation they had on Titan, he had to know and so he landed, turning to look at the Wizard.
“Hey. You said one out of 14 million, we win, yeah?” he asked, glancing around “Tell me this is it.”
“If I tell you what happens, it won't happen” Strange said back, and Tony groaned. Jesus this man was infuriating.
“You better be right.” Tony shot back, pointing an iron clad finger at him.
As Scott was hot-wiring his van, because of course it was dead, the fight was raging on and the gauntlet was in some kind of relay across the battle field towards them. T’Challa took it off Clint and as Thanos advanced on the black Panther, Wanda landed in front of him, her eyes blazing. She then began to fight Thanos furiously, and she seemed to be getting the upper hand as bits of his armour began to peel off him as he hovered in the air, surrounded by her red power. Wanda was attempting to tear him apart.
In desperation Thanos gave the instruction for his ships to fire down on the battle field, not caring that his own troops would also be hit. As the missiles began to hit the ground, everyone tried to dodge as best they could. Strange and the rest of his troops held up their arms conjuring magic shields to attempt to keep the troops on the ground as sheltered as possible. Katie and Pepper employing evasive manoeuvres as they sped across the sky, until a large explosion caught their attention and they glanced over to the bank of the river. One of the missiles from the ship had blasted part of it away and the water was now rushing up and over the edge and threatening to flood the canyon the battle was taking place in. After a nervous shout from Pepper, Strange jumped to it and conjured up his power, capturing the water in some kind of magic and holding it still.
“Where are the stones?” Katie asked frantically, circling above, still dodging the fire. And Steve had to admit, he’d kinda like to know as well. It was then that they both heard Peter Parker yelling, and they realised he had the gauntlet.
"I got this…” there was a scuffle "Ok, I don't got this. Help! Somebody! Help!"
"Hey Queens," Steve said, "Heads up!" He took a couple steps forward flung Mjolnir through the air. Peter shot his web at it, and it catapulted him through the air where Katie caught him.
"Hang on, I got you Spider-Kid!" she said, as they flew through the air and she tossed him to Valkyrie as she flew past. But her horse was hit by the fire from Thanos’ ship and Peter was blasted to the floor.
“Tony, have you any idea how we can shut that thing down?” Katie asked desperately, looking at the ship. They needed that damned thing out of order to stand any chance. The missiles were coming even harder now, and Steve dove to take cover behind a rock.
And then, all the noise stopped, and the cannons on the ship lifted upward and they began to fire into the sky.
“What the hell is this?” Sam asked, as he flew along side Katie.
"FRIDAY, what are they firing at?" Tony asked, his voice slightly worried.
"Something just entered the upper atmosphere," FRIDAY replied in both Tony and Katie’s ear.
Then a huge, bright ball of pulsating energy came surging down straight through the ship, and then back up through it again.
“DANVERS!” Katie yelled, watching as the woman hovered above the fast descending ship as it crash-landed in the lake.
"Now that’s how to make an entrance," she, glanced at her brother where he was hovering not far away from her. He turned to look at her, and even though she couldn’t see his face she knew he was rolling his eyes.
"I used to make a perfectly fine entrance, thank you Kiddo…”
"Danvers," Steve glanced up, hardly able to keep the smile of his face, even though he knew this was far from over. But Thanos was looking worried now, he could see from the Titan’s body language, and that was enough of a boost for the Super Soldier to sweep back into Captain mode, they could win this...
“We could use an assist here…” he looked up.
“What on?” Carol asked, flying towards Katie.
“We need to get the stones to the brown van…” Katie said, circling and then she spotted Peter who was crouched in a crater, the gauntlet tight within his arms. Gesturing to Carol she landed by Peter, her helmet sliding away and Carol gently dropped besides her and looked down at Peter..
"Hi. I'm Peter Parker," he said, looking up at her, his nose blooded.
Carol smirked, almost flirtatiously. "Hey Peter Parker. Got something for me?"
Peter pushed himself up and handed her the gauntlet, before he looked at the Army who was crawling towards them. “I don't know how you're gonna get it through all that” he said quietly.
Wanda then landed next to Katie and glanced around, her red power surrounding her.  “Don't worry.” the Sokovian woman said as Valkyrie landed on her winged horse
“She's got help” Okoye said stepping up as she looked around.
“Where’s Nat?” Wanda asked as Pepper landed next to Okoye. Katie hung her head slightly as she looked at her, as more and more of the women from the battle landed in front of them- Mantis, then Shuri  Hope, Gamora and Nebula.
“She didn’t make it Wan…” Katie said gently, and she heard Okoye gasp and then realised that no one had told the Warrior “She didn’t make it back from the mission to get the stones.” Okoye spun her shield in her hands, her face stoney as she eyed up the army which was advancing on them. “Then this…this is for her…” The Wakandan woman said, turning to Katie who nodded.
Tumblr media
And then they attacked. Thanos' army charged while the women helped Carol Danvers go through the swarm of aliens, Chitauri, animals alike. Okoye took out the larger fighter that Katie recognised from the train station in Edinburgh as Wanda, her, Pepper and Valkyrie destroyed two leviathans. Carol Danvers then started flying towards the van with the Gauntlet, at a rate of knots, going through every blockade that was in her way with ease. Thanos, seeing this, started running towards her.
“We gotta cover Danvers!” Katie yelled as she flew down, followed by Pepper as Shuri and Hope also stood tall, the 4 of them unloading their various weapons and succeeding in blasting Thanos backwards. Danvers sped past him, but through the heat and flash of various beams and weapons, no one spotted him launching the half of his sword towards the van until it was too late.
Steve felt the explosion and looked up at the huge flash of light, seeing Danvers being catapulted back through the air, her grip on the gauntlet lost and it fell to the ground. Then, it was almost like time slowed down as Thanos paused, looking at the Gauntlet, at the same time as Tony sat up and did the same. As Steve sprinted towards the pair of them Tony went to tackle him from behind only to be batted away to the side somewhere. Steve continued to sprint, he was almost there, almost…and then Thor landed swinging his lightning covered axe at the Titan before his hammer flew into his hand and he used both weapons to hold Thanos at bay. Steve threw himself on Thanos’ back grabbing at the axe, pulling with all his might in an attempt to slice it straight through Thanos’ neck. But it was to no avail. With a might head-butt Thanos sent Thor sprawling backwards and he reached up and pulled Steve off him, flinging him through the air like a rag doll. He landed hard, his head colliding with something, and he was out cold.
“Steve!” Katie saw him go flying, and was about to go after him, but she saw Thanos reaching for the gauntlet. Surging her suit forwards she shot at him, desperation flooding her system, and she kept her beam going as she flew down. Her fingers grazed the gauntlet before a harsh kick to her head sent her flipping back and through the air with no control over her flight plan. She landed heavily, groaning as she felt blood trickle down her temple. She had taken a bad hit there and felt herself zoning in and out, the sounds of the battle muting slightly as she lay on her back, her helmet flying open as she took deep gulps of air before it all went black.
Tony, meanwhile, had come to. He sat up, and saw that Thanos and Danvers were locked in combat, Danvers’ hands were both wrapped round Thanos’ left and Tony could see that he now had the gauntlet. They were so close, surely…surely not. He couldn’t snap again. He grimaced as Thanos went to head but the woman, but nothing. It simply bounced off the energy surrounding her. And Tony felt a glimmer of hope, maybe she was their secret weapon. The one in 14 million, 605 that meant they were gonna win. As he watched she surged upwards, forcing Thanos to his knees but the Titan pulled the Power Stone out of the gauntlet and clutching it in his right hand he hit Danvers hard and she flew through the air, landing harshly. With pure desperation, Tony turned to look at Strange who was watching him. The magician simply raised one finger, which was trembling slightly. Trembling, Tony assumed, because the one win he foresaw was now at risk. But as he looked at the man, Strange’s eyes filled with sadness and Tony realised that it wasn’t Carol he saw winning the battle after all.
It was him.
And then he understood completely. And he knew what he had to do. With a deep breath, resigned to his fate he threw himself at the Titan.
With a heavy moan, Katie sat up, just in time to see Tony grappling with Thanos. With an angry cry she fired her suit up again and shot forwards, but as she did Thanos cast aside her brother easily. She bore down on him she shooting her beams, using her boosters and everything she had, but once again she was forced to quit after one of the Chitauri Leviathons came straight for her. She just managed to dodge it by shooting to the right, but was caught heavily by one of its fins and for the second time in as many minutes she was spiralling though the air with no control. The heads up display in her helmet flickered slightly and there was ringing in her ears mingled with FRIDAY’s desperate calls. The ground was rising to meet her but just in time she managed to pull herself round and righted herself in the air. Spinning round she saw Tony knelt up, his helmet retracted as he stared at the Titan, who was leering down over him with a twisted grin on his face.
“I am inevitable…”He said. It was the second time she had heard him say that.  And then he rose his hand which bore the gauntlet.
Katie’s desperate scream echoed around her helmet as she hovered in mid-air and before she could so much as move, the Titan snapped. But instead of the beams of light and the shaking of the ground that had happened when Bruce did it. There was nothing. Katie’s face plate slid back, because the thought the displays were damaged but her eyes widened as Thanos glanced down at his gauntlet. She realised at the same time he did that the stones were missing. And then, as if in slow motion, the pieces started to slot into place, both figuratively and mentally.
Tony knelt tall, the stones twirling round his hand. Lights circled his forearm and bicep and he let out a loud yell, the utter pain and power consumed him. It bore into every cell on his body and took everything he had inside him to keep himself upright. This was it the end that he always knew he was going to meet. And strangely, he wasn’t scared. Not for him anyway, this was his destiny… the only way it would ever end.
“We’re in the Endgame now...”
Morgan’s face flashed across Tony’s mind, then Pepper’s, then his sister’s as his head fell back, the power surging up his arm and shoulder. Pulling his head up with an almighty wrench, his eyes locked on those belonging to the Thanos and he could feel the stones vibrating on his gauntlet, humming, almost like they knew what was coming. Maybe they did.
The bastards words echoed in his mind. “I am inevitable.”
Well, eat shit you fucker…
His eyes flickered to his sister, who was watching the entire event unfold, paralysed in mid-air behind the Titan, her helmet retracted and mouth open in a silent scream. With a soft smile he then turned back to the Titan and looked him square in the face, speaking with the most conviction he could ever remember having.
“And I…am…Iron Man.”

He raised his fingers, concentrating on what he wanted to happen, and snapped. The power surge made Tony collapse forward, his skin was burning and his throat felt like it was being closed off. He pushed himself to his feet, hand clutched to the arc reactor in his chest as he tried to speak into his Comms, but the words wouldn’t come. Staggering a few feet, he stumbled to a large upturned piece of concrete laced with rebar before he collapsed against it, hard.
Steve who had just got to his feet was aware of a bright flash of light and the vibrating of the ground underneath him and new instantly that someone had snapped. He spun round in desperate hope it wasn’t Thanos, and then as he saw one of the animals bearing down on him he braced himself, aiming a hard punch to it’s head. But he connected with nothing. He paused, his eyes widening, mouth falling open in shock as he watched Thanos’ army turn to dust all around the field and he realised that they’d won. It wasn’t Thanos who had snapped, it was one of them. With a relieved sigh, he wheeled around expecting to see Thor or Banner with the gauntlet, his mouth suddenly going dry as he realised the effect it had on Banner the last time but they were nowhere to be found. And that was when he spotted his wife, deactivating her suit as she ran, scrambling over piles of concrete and stones to get to someone.
Tony’s breathing was laboured and his eyes were full wide when Katie finally reached him, grabbing his gauntlet clad hand.
“Tony, come on…look at me…” He was done, he understood that. But they’d won. Morgan, Pepper, Kiddo, Jamie, Emmy, Steve…his family were all safe. The world was safe. He tried to speak, tried to tell her it was ok, that he accepted what was happening, but his voice was merely a whisper.
“I…”
“Shhh, save your strength…” Katie gently placed her hand on the side of his head, down the cheek which wasn’t badly burnt and she was aware that someone had landed next to her. Rhodey dropped to his knee gently, his hand falling to Tony’s shoulder as he looked at his friend, not saying a word. Katie turned to him, his eyes filling with tears.
“Mr Stark?” Peter Parker landed between her and Rhodey Katie turned back to her brother as his head collapsed against the concrete. “Hey Mr Stark, can you hear me…it’s Peter…” Tony’s face turned to the young man, a flash of recognition on his face as he tried to smile.
“We won…Mr Stark” Peter said, his breathing deep. “We won, you did it Sir, we did it…I’m sorry…don’t….” He began to cry as Tony’s head lolled to the side and then Katie was aware of someone else behind them, gently pulling Peter up and away. She turned to her right as Pepper crouched next to her. She gently squeezed Katie’s arm before she touched Tony on his shoulder, placing her other hand over the arc reactor on his chest.
“Hey…” she said softly.
“Pep…” he managed to whisper as his hand fell on top of hers and Katie placed her own over his.
“FRIDAY? ” Pepper spoke with a thick swallow, even though Katie knew there was no need to ask the AI. The stones had almost killed Thanos and Banner. Tony stood no chance. He was dying.
“Life functions are critical…” the AI spoke and Katie bowed her head, her tears falling to the ground.
“Tony…” Pepper said softly, and Katie looked back at her brother, who was smiling up at his wife. She gently smiled back, as he turned his head to his sister and she tried her hardest to keep it together.
“The stars…”He mumbled out, and Katie nodded chocking back a sob as she gripped his hand tighter, finishing the saying for him.
“And back…”
He turned back to Pepper who gently ran her hand up his arm “We’re gonna be ok” she said, her voice soft as she glanced at Katie
“We all are.” Katie assured him, sniffing slightly.
His head lolled back once more and Pepper spoke gently, this time her voice cracked. “You can rest now…” Her hand brushed his hair back from his temple as he lay so still, his eyes glanced over Katie’s shoulder to where Steve was stood, stock still, his own tears clouding his vision. He locked eyes with Tony who gave him the faintest of smiles. Steve nodded to him, his chest heaving with sorrow before his brother-in-law’s eyes stopped focussing and his body slumped. Steve saw Pepper bow her head next to Katie, and as his wife glanced down at her hand, still over the top of his, Steve saw the light go out in his chest.
He was gone.
Katie let out a soft sob as she removed her hand gently taking Tony’s with her. Kneeling up, she pressed her forehead against his, scrunching her face up against the physical pain that was brewing in her chest. Pepper leaned up to kiss his face as a silence fell around them, not one single sound coming from the battle field. Pepper dropped her head to Tony’s shoulder and then she too began to cry. Katie placed a soft kiss to his cheek, his skin still warm and bowed her head, listening to Pepper’s sobs through the silence of her own.
Steve limped forward, dropping heavily to his knees besides his wife “Katie…” he said softly, she turned to face him, noticing his eyes were red and the dirt on the parts of his face visible under his helmet were interlined with the tracks his own tears had made. The two looked at each other for a second, before her face crumpled and he wrapped his arms around her and she buried her face into his chest, her small body shaking with silent sobs, hands fisting around the Kevlar of his uniform. Steve lay his cheek against her head, his own tears pouring down his face as he held her to him. His eyes scanned immediate vicinity of the battle field and his eyes fell on Clint in the near distance, dropping to his knee, his head bowed, hand resting on his fist. In front of him T’challa did the same, then Carol, and the Bucky... everyone, all out of respect to their fallen warrior.
Eventually it was Thor that broke the silence, but not by speaking. There was a huge rumble of thunder and Katie jumped, pulling back from Steve slightly, looking upwards as lighting flashed in the sky. The clouds that had descended with Thanos’ ship began to part slowly, a chink of the red sunset falling onto where Tony was sat, chinks of light bouncing off his Iron Man suit.
Katie turned away from Steve and gently reached out with a shaking hand to close Tony’s eyes
“There, he could be sleeping…”she said softly, her hand falling to Pepper’s shoulder. Pepper reached up and gripped it, almost painfully as she turned to her sister-in-law, her face streaming with tears. There was a moment’s pause before Katie wrapped her arms around her, gently stroking her hair.
“We should… we should move him.” Rhodey said, his voice cracking. Steve pulled himself to his feet with a groan and he looked around.
“Has any of the compound survived?” he asked softly, wiping his face as Sam approached him.
“The Hangar area and the labs are totally gone, Cap.” Sam said gently and Steve looked at him properly for the first time in 5 years “But some of the living quarters and part of the training facility seems to be ok.”
“Can we check it’s safe to house people?” Steve said, switching back into Captain mode. “We need to set up somewhere to treat the wounded.”
Sam nodded.
“I’ll come with you.” Rhodey said before he looked at Steve. “I’ll get onto the Emergency Services and Ross too.”
The two men nodded. Rhodey took off straight away whereas Sam paused.
“It’s good to see you Sam.” Steve said, with a soft smile.
“Well like I said, when Captain America needs your help…”
There was a pause, before the two men hugged. Stepping back, with a nod, Sam launched back into the air.
“Steve…”
He spun round to see Bucky, watching him tentatively.  For a moment Steve stood still, just observing his friend before he rushed forward into a manly embrace, Steve choking up once more.
“I leave you for what, 5 minutes and you start another war?” Bucky teased gently and Steve gave a watery laugh.
“Try 5 years you Jerk”
“Punk.” Bucky said gently, before he looked down at Katie who was still knelt by her brother, her arm round Pepper. He gave a sigh and dropped his head.
“Sorry.” he offered to Steve, not sure what else he could say.
Steve nodded, wiping his face as he glanced around, the Captain and the Sergeant both surveying the survivors. Banner was stood with Clint and TChalla, the three of them talking with their heads bowed. Clint reached out and patted Banner on the arm as the green man began walking towards where Steve was stood.
“Living quarters are secure…” Rhodey said in Steve’s ear and he nodded.
“Ok, let’s set up some form of command centre, a triage maybe if we need it…” he took a deep breath and turned back to Katie as he dropped to his knee again, a little gentler than last time and he touched her shoulder.
“Honey…” he said softly, wiping away the blood from her temple. “We can move Tony now, take him inside…that is if you’re ready…”
She turned to him, taking a deep breath she nodded. “Pep?”
Pepper gave a sniff and nodded as well.
“I’ll take him.” Banner said, sniffing as he stepped forward. Katie watched as he picked up Tony’s limp body as easily as if it was a rag doll and set off walking through the rubble.
“I don’t want him to be alone.” Pepper said gently from her side before she stood up and walked after Bruce.
Katie took a deep breath. She didn’t want to leave her brother either but she knew there was nothing more to be done for him, he was gone, and there were other people that needed their help. She turned to face Steve who was still knelt next to her. He reached out to gently cup her cheek with his hand, and it was then she noticed the bone-deep almost foot long gash down his forearm.
“Steve…your arm.” she said, taking his wrist in her hand and gently flipping it so she could look at it. “I’ll be fine.” He said.
Knowing better than to try and argue with him, she looked around and asked with a shaky voice. “Did anyone else…” “No.” Steve shook his head, instantly understanding “Few minor injuries but…everyone’s fine.” “Except Tony…” she said, her breath catching as the tears once more flooded from her eyes.
“I’m so sorry sweetheart.” Steve’s voice cracked as he wrapped his arms round her and cradled her close, the pair of them lost in their grief for their fallen brother. *****
The night began to draw in. Thanks to Rhodey, the Emergency services had swamped the area to begin a full clean up and treatment of the walking wounded.
And there were so many people to greet, so many to thank, so fucking many.
Katie’s head was a complete mash. She was utterly numb. Hugs and tears were shared with the people they had lost 5 years ago, thanks were given to those who had stood by them and come to their aid, and then more tears were shed for the two fallen heroes. Eventually, she told Steve she needed a break and he gave her cheek a soft kiss, both of them knowing full well her breakdown would come later. She headed into the compound to find Pepper and her brother before he was taken away by one of Ross’ men, the Secretary having actually proven useful for once.
Strange transported everyone who wasn’t staying at the Compound back home, in the same way he had led them there. He bid goodbye to Steve, shaking his hand, before he himself disappeared.
With a sigh and a glance down at his bandaged arm, Steve’s attention was caught by something shining in the dim light. As he looked harder he noticed that it was a piece of his shield. Bending down, his fingers swept the dust and debris off the large piece of Vibranium. Picking it up, he swallowed slightly, remembering the horror and surprise he had felt as Thanos had hacked through it, as if it had been made of nothing but aluminium.
“So you met Danvers?” a familiar voice cut through his thoughts.
Steve looked over his shoulder to see Fury stood behind him. He stood up and gave the man a weak smile.“Yeah. You were holding out on us all this time.”
“In a fashion” Fury shrugged. “Code red only…”
Steve gave a snort, no in the least bit surprised.
“He's a spy. Captain, he's THE spy.” Tony said, gesticulating with his arms to make a point “His secrets have secrets”
Steve looked down at the fractured piece of his shield which was held in his hand, before he glanced out over the now destroyed compound where the battle had been raging mere hours before and he shook his head.
“You know, all this…bringing everyone back…” he sighed heavily “The victory kinda feels pyrrhic with losing Nat and Tony…”
“They both made their choices.” Fury sighed, softly “Both gave their lives for a cause they believed in.”
“Tony didn’t even want to do this you know.” Steve sighed “He said no at first but I talked him into it…” “Stark never did anything he didn’t want to do.” Fury said, turning to face Steve straight on. “He made a choice. As did Agent Romanoff. And you need to allow them the both the dignity of their choices by not blaming yourself. They clearly thought it was worth it.” With those words the Captain was catapulted way back in time to a conversation in a blown out London bar, the evening he realised he could no longer get drunk.
“It wasn’t your fault.” Peggy looked at him across the table.
“Did you read the reports?” Steve shot back.
“Yes.”
“Then you know that’s not true.”
“You did everything you could. Did you believe in your friend? Did you respect him?” Peggy asked and Steve looked at her, incredulously. Of course he did. She nodded and continued “Then stop blaming yourself. Allow Barnes the dignity of his choice. He damn well must have thought you were worth it.”
Only this time, unlike Bucky, there was no second chance. If calling what Bucky went through a second chance was really accurate that is…
“What?” Fury asked as Steve shook his head, a sad smile on his face.
“Nothing.” Steve said, “You just reminded me of someone.” “Anyone in particular?” “Peggy.” Steve sighed, looking around at the ruins of the compound. “Well there are worse people to be likened to.” Fury considered what Steve said for a moment before he changed the subject “I hear you and Nova have been busy these past 5 years, couple of kids...” “Yeah we do, boy and a girl.” Steve smiled as he looked at Fury, the thought of his children temporarily stemming the hollow feeling in his chest at the loss of his brother-in-law and friend. They were safe.
“You should go home.” Fury turned to Steve.  “Be with them.”
“Is that an order?” Steve arched an eyebrow looking at him.
“You don’t work for you me anymore, you haven’t done for a long time…in fact I’m not sure you ever really did…” Fury said, smirking slightly. “And I don’t think you never will again.”
He gave Steve a significant look, one which Steve instantly understood. This was Fury’s way of relieving him from his leadership of the Avengers.  It was symbolic more than anything because Steve didn’t need releasing from service at all. Fury wasn’t his boss, no one was his boss, but this was closure. It was Fury’s promising Steve he would never be called upon to fight again if that was what he chose.
And he did choose. He was ready to quit. 7 years ago when he had been forced into it he hadn’t been, not really, but now he was. His fight was done. He was buying that fucking holiday home, and they were going to be a normal family, that did normal things, in normal ways. Tony and Nat had both sacrificed their lives, and he wasn’t going to dishonour their memory by putting his family at risk ever again.
Captain America was done.
Steve looked down at his feet, before he glanced up at Fury, and held his hand out. “It’s been an honour.” he said, as Fury shook his hand. “But you’re right. It’s time for me to hang up my shield, for good this time. “ he looked down at the broken metal in his hand. “What’s left of it that is…”
“Or you could pass it down.” Fury said as Steve looked back at him, snorting.
“I think Jamie is a bit too young, and Katie would murder me if I even-”
“I don’t mean to your son.” Fury said, cutting Steve off and giving him significant look. “Captain America has been a symbol of hope for years. And that’s something the world is always gonna need Cap, regardless of who it is. So think about it, maybe there’s someone else worthy of that title and shield, broken or not.”
Steve watched, pondering his words, as Fury gave him a final nod, and turned back towards the destroyed buildings
