Drunk anon here again! And guess what?? I’m drunk again!! I live in New Zealand, and I’m very aware that our binge drinking culture (going out every weekend and getting completed wasted instead of having the ability to just have a couple casual drinks lol) is very extreme in comparison to other countries, and probably not very good - but we have a v good time at least! 🥴 So I hope no one is judging me for another drunk escapade, but I always seem to land back here after I’ve had too much wine… because this is for sure my comfort space. I really really value that Liv. As someone who experiences quite extreme depression and anxiety, this space you’ve created has given me such an incredible spade for comfort. I guess the point of this anon ask is to let you know that I hope you realise the comfort and solace you provide to those who read your fics. This is such a platform of warmth, love and arohanui (Māori language that we frequently use in NZ, rough translation meaning much love and comfort) for those that may not experience this kind of intimacy elsewhere. I LOVE you so much and hope you feel loved every day, in exchange for the love you give to your readers. Ka nui te aroha (love you lots), Drunk Anon 💘💘
Hi love! I hope you had fun!! No judgment here lmao you do your thing and have a blast! Just do it safely <3 I'm so happy to hear this is your comfort space :( like I'm so happy to provide that for you. My heart clenched in fondness reading this ask and I'm in a bit of disbelief tbh. It's really sweet of you to send this and like I think I'm aware to an extent of the comfort we all take in fics and that my blog is therefore a bit of a safe space for some of you but idk it's hard to believe that I'm able to provide legitimate comfort to you :( oh I love that word! Vocab lesson, fuck yeah! That's seriously such a lovely word, thank you for sharing it with me. I love you!!!! Thank you so much, sweetheart. Also, this blog is a place of arohanui (did I use it right? lol) because people like you come here and fill it up with your love so thank you for that 🧡

Pōkarekare ana ngā wai o Waiapu, Whiti atu koe hine marino ana e
E hine e, hoki mai rā. Ka mate ahau i te aroha e
The waters of Waiapu are agitated But when you cross over, girl, they will be calm
Oh girl, please come back to me I am dying of love for you

Pairing: Jesse x Reader
Content: modern au, established relationship, domestic bliss, implied smut, fluff, mention of Jesse's former military enlistment
Tumblr media
For the first time in a very long time, you wake up and Jesse is there. No more deployments, no more long-distance calls and patchy video messages. No more waiting for him to return to you, longing across the vast expanse of the globe, franticly worrying if he's near a battle zone or not, if his life is at risk. No, for the first time in a long time, neither of you has to worry about any of that.
He's finally free.
You press a kiss to his bare shoulder, light enough that he doesn't wake, and fully intend to stop there, but having the canvas of his skin exposed to you like this, in the quiet paradise of a modest cabin in the middle of literal nowhere, away from war and work and the hustle and bustle of everyday life, you find that you cannot stay away from your soldier for very long. You can't keep your mouth off him.
After all, you have a lot to make up for. Years worth of time apart, time when you could have been showering him in your affection.
"Mm, got something on your mind, babe?" His voice is roughly carved and guttural this fresh from sleep.
You pause only long enough to swat playfully at his butt before you continue kissing and nuzzling your way along his shoulder blade. There's no real rush, no method to your madness, not even an underlying desire for more as you explore him - just a simple desire to love the man who's carved a space for himself in the caverns of your heart.
"Just love you," you say when your lips reach the nape of his neck.
Jesse shivers, then suddenly flips onto his back so he can grab at you. You squeal and he laughs, and everything's a blur for a few moments as you both struggle to wield your leverage against the other, but he wins in the end. Jesse always wins.
His nose presses to yours, then his forehead to your forehead, and you feel his breath stir warm and stale on your cheeks. "Ka nui te aroha."
You kiss him, and he smiles into it the way he always does. "Love you more."
"Not possible."
"I dunno. I hafta put up with your morning breath, so I think that means I love you more."
"Tch, shuddup," he groans, to which you challenge that he ought to try and make you, and the morning devolves from there.
It's only some hours later, when you've both showered and dressed and eaten (and gotten distracted by each other every inch of the way), that you finally leave the cabin and head outside. Summertime has finally breached Aotearoa's shores and every corner of the country is celebrating - the birds are singing, the wind is mild as it carries the sunshine along, the trees lounge lazily while the cicadas buzz and click incessantly, and Jesse is eager to show you it all. He takes you for a walk through the forest, up and down windy paths under shaded canopies, past fields of wildflowers and tiny streams that trickle over scattered rocks.
This world is a lot of things. It's fractured and hurting in too many ways to count, but it's also beautiful and sweet, an ever-evolving universe spun from natural majesty and love and sunlight. You feel it now - the sun, burning into your skin in that wonderfully pleasant way it can only do when the clouds are long gone and the sky is dazzlingly blue. And much like the Earth to its star, you find yourself drawn into Jesse's orbit as he guides you through the countryside.
You're both toasted and sweaty by the time you return to the cabin late in the afternoon. Twilight leads to a lazy evening spent lounging on the sofa, watching your favorite show and munching on tim tams.
"I'm glad you're finally home, babe."
He nuzzles his face into your cheek and smiles. "Me too." It's funny how you never noticed how long his lashes were. Or maybe you'd forgotten with the distance. Either way, you can't help thinking he's the most beautiful man on Earth when his nut-brown eyes pierce through them. "Thank you. For waiting."
You'd have waited 10 lifetimes over for him.
It's there in that cabin, tucked into some obscure corner of the country where the cicadas drive him half crazy and the sun burns his head, that's where he asks you the question you'd never been sure he would ask, what you were afraid he'd never live long to say.
You say yes.

The storm fell upon the coasts of Gondor just as dawn was peering through the flying clouds; but when Amroth woke the ship was already far from land. Crying aloud in despair Nimrodel! he leapt into the sea and swam towards the fading shore. The mariners with their Elvish sight for a long time could see him battling with the waves, until the rising sun gleamed through the clouds and far off lit his bright hair like a spark of gold. No eyes of Elves or Men ever saw him again in Middle-earth.
- Unfinished Tales
[Image description: ten square panels. Half of them are black text on a white paper background, and the other half are images in shades of blue. The blue-tinted images have a square frame and the words "Amroth" and "Nimrodel".
"Dark and stormy / Are the waters of Waiapu; / If you cross over, beloved / they will be calm"
A ship in a thunderstorm.
A Māori man and woman pressing their foreheads together. Behind them are trees and a stream.
"Oh girl / return to me, / I could die / of love for you"
"My pen is shattered / I have no more paper / But my love / is still steadfast"
An underwater photo of hands reaching towards the surface, bubbles streaming up
A woman ankle-deep in the surf, looking out at the sea
"Never will my love / be dried by the sun, / It will be moistened / by my tears"
"Oh girl / return to me, / I will die / for love of you"]
Nimrodel and Amroth for day 3 of @tolkienofcolourweek
The words are an English translation of some of the verses and the chorus of Pōkarekare Ana, which is probably the most famous of all te reo Māori songs. You can read the full lyrics (in both Maori and English) and listen to it here.
A brief note: the link above translates "ka mate ahau / i te aroha e" as "I could die / of love for you", but it can also be translated as "I will die / for love of you".

Character Profile — New Zealand
Tumblr media
Character Name: Aotearoa, New Zealand. Zee, Kiwibird, Kiwifruit, Dearest Eleanor, Darling Eleanor. 1810 - 1967 - Eleanor Elizabeth Rose Kirkland 1967 - ???? - Aroha Eleanor Kaipo.
Age: Baby, toddler, child. 1800-1867. Preteen 1867-1880. Teenager, 1880-1900. Appears about 18-21 after 1907. Before then, about 2-3 years younger than Jack.
Height: 165 cm, 5'5.
Physical Description: Always round-faced and chunky as a baby, Zee grew to be a very athletic young woman who dove into sports from the first time she held a ball and shed corsets the first chance she got. She has the ideal body for rugby, wide-hipped with a low center of gravity. It takes much exertion, but she's got enough human strength to haul one of her gigantic brothers. She spent her early adulthood in corsets and was stuck in a strict gender binary, so she has a lot more grace and poise than the grubby flanno shirt and gum boots would betray when she's in the paddocks these days. She can appear very cranky and cold; her default expression is sour, but when she smiles, she lights the room up.
Eye colour: Dark brown eyes that look slightly green or gold when she's wearing a larger Pounamu/greenstone pendant but are unconditionally brown.
Hair colour/style: She has an incredible amount of dark curly hair that she generally wore long until 1915 and has worn in various styles since then, generally around her shoulders after 1930. She didn't have to use rollers when those were fashionable; she could form her hair into stylish rolls and waves. She's worn it somewhat longer in the new millennium and experimented with various braids and styles, especially reviving Māori knot and twist styles. Still, a long braid over one shoulder often feels most familiar.
Other distinguishing physical traits: Her hair tends to be one of her trademarks, but she inherited her father's brows and freckles, which got her caught by Arthur when she was in uniform as a male.
Personal Appearance/Style: She loves black clothing way too much. She always preferred being in mourning clothes before 1900 so that people would leave her the fuck alone in public. She wore a lot of Jack's clothes growing up. She likes fashion and keeps an eye on new styles, and she wears green a lot, generally a darker jewel-tone green for more formal occasions overseas. At home, it's a lot of bare feet, cargo shorts, t-shirts and water sports. She has worn the Korowai for formal occasions since the mid-20th century. She's had the Tā moko done several times, but she's a nation, so it fades, and she has to get it redone.
Verbal Style: Due to sex and ethnicity, Zee learned to switch much more easily between accents and languages to whatever will give her the most advantage in a situation. She can code-switch between te reo Māori, her default broad New Zealand accent and a relatively posh accent that doesn't quite ring upper-class British after WW2 but certainly reflects her education and commonwealth status.
Level of Education: Of Arthur's children, she has the most history of formal education. She received an educational equivalent of a BA in the 1890s at Oxford before women could actually receive a diploma; her graduation present was her right to vote in 1893. She attended Florence Nightingales Nursing College in London and graduated in 1906, her graduation present being her and Arthur signing her law of formal dominionship into law. She went back to Oxford after WW1 to get a degree in Social work and Anthropology in 1924, and finally went to medical school in the 1930s and qualified as a surgeon by 1934. In 1939, anticipating the coming war, she trained as a pilot specializing in navigation. It was only in the 1950s that she finally enrolled in engineering courses but ended up in a graduate program for Ornithology (study of birds) after the 1953 Wildlife Act.
Occupation: She has some work she does for the government, but generally, she rotates between social work, conservation work with her birds and some diplomacy work.
Past Occupations: Military nurse, sapper, subaltern, social worker, archaeologist, anthropologist, flight nurse, surgeon, GP sheep rancher, agricultural and mechanical engineer, flight navigator, pilot, diplomat and conservationist.
Skills Abilities or Talents: As far as special nation abilities go, as a Polynesian seagoing culture, she almost always knows exactly where she is no matter what hemisphere, just automatically. She's never gotten lost in her life. Also, when she's angry, her islands tend to show slightly more volcanic activity than usual, primarily geysers. She's second only to Alfred in sheer natural prowess at practically anything she wants to try. Has very little aptitude for the creative arts, however.
Admirable Personality Traits: Tenacious, observant, intelligent, compassionate, logical and resourceful.
Negative Personality Traits: Judgemental, self-righteous, and often too logical and sharp-tongued.
Sense of Humor: Sharp, ironic, sarcastic, a bit twisted and darker than it should be.
Physical/Mental illness or affliction: Generally the most stable of her siblings, sex and national rep status sometimes combine in really weird ways, and her moods and hormones tend to fluctuate in such a way that even Jack, someone who regularly handles the world's deadliest predators and poisonous creatures might hesitate and will not attempt it unless armed with food, chocolate and much compassion because good god does she deal with so much shit as a woman and a country.
Hobbies/Interests: Bungee jumping, zorbing, bird watching, surfing, mountain climbing, sailing, gardening, ziplining, reading and rugby.
Favourite Foods: Fish and chips, pavlova, hāngī.
Most important personal item: Her collection of Taonga Māori, mostly her Pounamu/greenstone pendants, but also carvings she has in her home, combs, her Korowai and kākahu cloaks and a Wahaika she's had her entire life.
Person/friend close to character: Her next oldest brother, Jack, is her best friend and closest family member and the person she probably loves most in the world, if often to her own chagrin. Also, close to Taiwan. Has an evolving, often unequal but also close relationship with other Pacific and Polynesian nations due to her status as an imperial power in the region.
Brief family history: Born in the very early 19th century, Arthur claimed her and took permanent possession after 1840. In the structure Arthur raised her in, she was the last child and only daughter, has 3 elder brothers, her father, 2 uncles and an aunt. Her situation is much more unclear than her 'siblings' because she has always had Māori looks and kept their traditions and culture close to her heart. And she's not sure how that relates her to other Polynesian cultures because she was born of fucked up structures, and that made her incredibly different than many of her island peers. Her father sees much of his mother, a pre-Roman figure in her, but that always annoys her a bit.
Most painful experiences in the character’s past: Chunuk Bair, the Sinking of the HMS Marquette, Passchendaele, the mount Erebus disaster in 1979, where she was killed on her way to Antarctica and earthquakes in 1931, and the Spanish Flu in 1918.
Their Song: Birds, by Imagine Dragons & Elisa

Today is the Finals day of Te Matatini, and if you’re not watching already you should really tune in! Te Matatini is a kapa haka (Māori performing arts) competition in Aotearoa that’s often called the Olympics of Kapa Haka. The performances are absolutely stunning to watch!! As an American who just learned about this event, it’s been really cool to find out more about Māori culture while admiring some absolutely breath-taking art. It’s available to stream live or watch prerecorded on TVNZ or Haka Translate, with live translations in many different languages available! Even if you miss the live finals today, to my knowledge the competition will still be available to stream for a few more days afterwards. Unfortunately those websites are only available to people in Australia or Aotearoa, but with a little bit of stubbornness and a decent VPN you can watch from anywhere. (I’ve been using the free VPN TunnelBear, with the only downside being that every now and then I run out of free data and have to make a new account.) They also have a donation fund set up to help communities affected by Cyclone Gabrielle, so if you want to donate this is a great place to do that! https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/te-matatini-o-te-aroha

For @churchofpoetry. This is a waiata I know and will comfortably sing/lead solo when needed (only person able to in a powhiri). I know both tunes and have known them for over 30 years now thanks to Mr Kowhai making me the lead in our kapa haka group when I was 12 years old. There are another two, which I cannot recall the names of right now, which I would need a quick listen before being able to sing/recite.
Coming back to edit to add the meaning of the lyrics because that's the whle point. This is my favourite...
Ehara i te mea Nō nāianei te aroha Nō nga tūpuna Tuku iho, tuku iho Te whenua, te whenua Te oranga o te iwi Nō nga tūpuna Tuku iho, tuku iho Whakapono, tumanako Te aroha te aroha; Nō nga tūpuna Tuku iho, tuku iho.
ENGLISH 'TRANSLATION'
Not the thing of recent times, is love but by the ancestors it has been passed down, passed down. From the land, the land comes the wellbeing of the people; by the ancestors it has been passed down, passed down. Faith, hope and love; by the ancestors they have been passed down, passed down.
(From NZ Folk Song * Ehara e te mea)

Oi.
