#tea server zuko au

can’t stop thinking about an iroh-and-zuko-never-leave-ba sing se au where zuko, having no other outlet for all his internalized perfectionism and single-minded drive to succeed at something, has no choice but to get really, really intense about the jasmine dragon.   and, perhaps inevitably, ends up mutating into the shouty, hypercritical, detail-oriented manager of every restaurant worker’s nightmares, who is a menace to iroh’s employees and potentially even more passionate about the right way to serve tea than even iroh himself.
zuko runs the tea shop in the exact same way that he once ran a fire nation navy warship.  he WILL stand there and time you to make sure you’re brewing the oolong EXACTLY the right amount of time and won’t let you strain the chamomile a second too soon.  he insists that the tea blends are all stored according to his current pet organizational system and woe to the poor stock boy who mixes them up.  the store room is organized alphabetically one week and the next the teas are lined up from weakest to to strongest flavor and the week after THAT all the containers are shelved based on brewing time and zuko never bothers to tell the workers when the system is changed.
the dishes MUST be cleaned according to his scrupulous standards of perfection and he stands over the dishwasher and points out every single smudge left unscrubbed.  zuko has posted a chart with detailed directions for exactly the right way to mop the floors and he WILL fire you for going off course.  the turnover rate at the jasmine dragon is incredible because zuko goes through tea servers faster than emily gilmore goes through maids.
iroh has created a tea monster and he has NO idea how to stop him.  zuko has shattered a tea pot for no other reason than “it poured too loudly, uncle!!!”  no customer dares send their tea back even if they end up with the wrong order; they’ve all seen zuko take his dao swords out on a tea wholesaler who tried to cheat him.  when zuko says the jasmine dragon is going to be the best tea shop in ba sing se, it’s not a promise, it’s a THREAT.

Avatar AU - Zuko transitions after the North Pole episode but the Gaang has no idea. They hardly see him, why would they know? Cut to Ba Sing Se when Sokka meets a cute girl working as a tea server in the lower ring.

Hi, hope you're well.
How would you rate the gaang + fire ladies' ability to work in customer service?
(there are so many fics of sokka working in retail and mai working in flowershops and I just don't think they're built like that— sokka has no patience for dumb questions and mai would probably rather die)
wait that’s so funny they literally are not built to serve people like that they’d kill themselves. especially mai i cannot imagine her having any kind of working class job and i know she hates flowers thinks they’re disgusting!!! i could see sokka being a tutor (in my modern au that’s how he meets toph. bc she drives everyone else away but then he meets her and he’s like “why ?? she is so cool”) and even working at the jasmine dragon (iroh is a chill boss so that’s why) but he could NOT do retail he’d kill himself before working black friday (in my modern au they’re also in new jersey. bc that’s very funny to me). but anyway!!
aang: i think he’d hate having to answer to someone else like just doing something he was told to do that he does not want to do ever would make his skin crawl. but when it comes to interacting with people even the worst rudest customers he is very friendly. even as a twelve year old he’s extremely patient (except when you are keeping him apart from a loved one, which is understandable!)
katara: i actually think katara working at a local coffee shop or smth is very plausible. she would have a tier ranking of all the regular customers in her head (and maybe even on paper) and she would treat them accordingly, ranging from excessive flirting to passive aggressive eye twitch. she’s good at her job for a communist who also needs to be liked by everyone at all times or she’ll die!
sokka: when he thinks a customer is stupid or annoying he starts talking slower and using smaller words in such an infuriatingly condescending way, but with the plausible deniability of “he was just being helpful” so that he can never actually get in trouble for it. but they both know he was being an asshole!!!!
toph: she needs to tell it like it is every five minutes or she’ll literally die it’s like a source of air for her. but i do think customer service would be good for her. she would enjoy it more than being a c*p that’s for sure! (low blow, sorry.)
zuko: okay well we see him be a tea server and the reviews are mixed. i think the thing about zuko that you have to understand is that if he is in a good mood he is a delight to have around and if he is in a bad mood he is a monster and his vibes ruin every room he’s in. so his proficiency at customer service is also just entirely dependent on how he is feeling at any given moment. i think he’d be happy serving tea once he’s the firelord though because it’s nostalgic and a respite for him. not so much when he’s an angry teen in ba sing se and he wants to be anywhere else.
suki: she’d be good at it because she is good at everything but she would definitely employ sokka’s plausibly deniable tactics of condescension. she has a lot more patience for people than sokka does, but she’d still enjoy messing with people, maybe even just out of boredom.
ty lee: she pretends to be stupid on purpose with customers she doesn’t like and when they try to complain to her manager she’s like “i am the manager” and when they question how she’s still allowed to work despite being so incompetent everyone else vouches for her they’re like “she’s literally our best employee.”
mai: would kill herself before that ever happened.
azula: see above, but also i think it could be good for her.

This drawing features an alternate universe Azula who was banished rather than Zuko, so she has a scar over her left eye and a bob haircut. She and Iroh are in tea server uniforms from season 2. Azula is looking ahead begrudgingly, saying, “Go away.” Iroh is leaning in sideways toward Azula and smiling ahead with his eyes closed and his hand outstretched, saying, “she means welcome!” End ID]

Thinking of writing an ATLA AU where Toph meets tea server Lee in Ba Sing Se and they become buds
Also in the fic Zuko would 100% hand a menu to a blind person unthinkingly (customer service is tiring ok?) and Toph is never gonna let him live it down

Fics of the Week
Avatar: The Last Airbender
letter to the editor by aloneintherain
No one knows that Dante Basco, an emerging writer with a growing readership, is actually Fire Lord Zuko.
Not even his editor.
Legacies by WildInkling
Long after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender, a lone historian finds the personal journal of Prince Zuko. Little does she know that he was also the mysterious anonymous author who took the world by storm. The world will never be the same. Inspired by and directly links to aloneintherain's Writer Zuko AU.
Treachery of the Highest Order by LoserLife592
Sometimes life is unfair. Sometimes the universe likes to kick you when you're down. Sometimes bad things happen to good people.
But there a still lines that need to be drawn. And this? This is beyond that line.
(or, You Think You Know A Guy)
A Dragon’s Instinct by AelinCreativ
Zuko is banished. Never to return to his Nation unless he does the impossible. But when Agni, Dragon of the Sun, gives Zuko a mission, he has a new purpose in life besides pretending to still be loyal to his father. With Azula playing defense at the palace, Zuko has the whole world to search for answers and the people who Agni says will be Champions of the Elements and help him restore balance to the world. He has his own secrets to keep while he's at it. With an uncle he can't trust and a crew of misfits on his side, can Zuko do the impossible and stop the war in time to save his people?
He's thirteen and the Spirit's have big plans for him. Is one teenage dragon enough to save the world?
a distant yesterday by aloneintherain
Iroh had been worried that the gentle tea server from Ba Sing Se wouldn’t survive the Fire Palace. But he can see traces of him in this young prince, this almost-Fire Lord.
Ozai didn’t crush Zuko the way he had intended. He survived. He grew strong, and gentle, and more honourable than Ozai could ever imagine.
And Iroh is so proud of him.
Follows Iroh’s thoughts on his nephews in Book 2 and Book 3 and beyond.
Quiet Like a Fire by WhatWouldJackSparrowDo
Things Azula is surprised by:
- her father's death at Zuko's hands (however supposedly inadvertent)
Things Azula is not surprised by:
- Zuko's complete and utter lack of a plan afterwards
(Zuko's aim on the Day of Black Sun is a little off. Ozai gets struck by his own lightning. Azula grudgingly takes care of the rest.)

the family evans by dirgewithoutmusic
What if, when Petunia Dursley found a little boy on her front doorstep, she took him in? Not into the cupboard under the stairs, not into a twisted childhood of tarnished worth and neglect—what if she took him in?
Petunia was jealous, selfish and vicious. We will not pretend she wasn’t. She looked at that boy on her doorstep and thought about her Dudders, barely a month older than this boy. She looked at his eyes and her stomach turned over and over. (Severus Snape saved Harry’s life for his eyes. Let’s have Petunia save it despite them).
Let’s tell a story where Petunia Dursley found a baby boy on her doorstep and hated his eyes—she hated them. She took him in and fed him and changed him and got him his shots, and she hated his eyes up until the day she looked at the boy and saw her nephew, not her sister’s shadow. When Harry was two and Vernon Dursley bought Dudley a toy car and Harry a fast food meal with a toy with parts he could choke on Petunia packed her things and got a divorce.
the girl who lived (again) by dirgewithoutmusic
Molly tried her best. When Harry had told them, Arthur had asked excitedly, "is this a Muggle thing?" Hermione had hurried out a "no!" and a frantic history of gender diversity in the wizarding world.
"It's just that I'm a girl," Harry had said, and Arthur had nodded and asked her about how telephone booths worked. He would call her by the right pronouns until the day he died at the respectable old age of one hundred and thirty three, and he would make it seem easy.
But Molly had to try. Hermione explained things faster and higher-pitched every time Molly messed up a pronoun. Molly frowned and muttered and put extra potatoes on Harry's plate at breakfast. Harry slept in Ron's room, which didn't bother either of them but which made Hermione scowl.
Harry got boxes of sweets and warm hugs, as Molly chewed things over. For her fifteenth Christmas, the Weasley sweater she would receive would be a bright, friendly, terrible pink.
The next time Harry visited, Molly put her on Ginny's floor to sleep-- for some definition of sleep that involved Hermione hissing threats at three in the morning if Harry and Ginny didn't "shut up about Wronski feints, do you know what time it is."
a snake in the den by dirgewithoutmusic
you know what would have been great? if ron got sorted into slytherin.
imagine– we have this kid on the train, the first friend harry meets, with his corned beef sandwiches and smudged nose. ron is eleven years old and he wants gryffindor, because he’s a weasley and that’s what always happens. but it doesn’t happen.
what a way to redeem slytherin house– or, god, at least complicate it. because ron is petty. he is mean and sharp and ambitious and jealous– and he is loyal to the ends of the earth. he is all those things, and he is and always has been good.
potter becomes before weasley in the alphabet, so harry says not slytherin please and gets told might as well be gryffindor. percy and fred and george are all sitting there in red and gold, ruffling the already-ruffled hair of the boy who lived, smug, and then ron sits down and the hat spits out slytherin!
the heir of something or other by dirgewithoutmusic
When kids in the Slytherin Common Room tossed jeers at the pudgy feet of Millicent Bulstrode, Harry rose up to do something about it. This Harry, now one of Snape’s own, got fewer House points lost but many more detentions– it had never been the colors on his hem that Severus hated.
This was not wishing Harry an easy path. This was not wishing the boy a warm House. This was Harry, three weeks in, sleep deprived and considering running away and going back to Privet Drive. This was Harry in the back of Potions class, blank-faced under Snape’s disdain the way he’d perfected under the Dursleys’s torments.
When Quirrell shouted “troll in the dungeons, thought you ought to know,” and Harry overheard that there was a girl in the bathroom crying, he still ran off to make sure she got out okay. He hesitated first, at the back of the little pack of Slytherin first years (at the back so that no one could get behind him)– he hesitated.
And Millicent Bulstrode, who could never quite keep her tummy tucked in enough, could never brush all the cat hair off her robes, never quite keep her temper in check, hesitated, too.

Listen your smitten soldier ideas already kill me but consider: a soulmate au where tea server Lee and SS meet in Ba Sing See. SS is just happy/enamored (iroh is ecstatic) while zuko is busy going oh... Oh no i wasn't prepared to Actually Start Over (could be more au from there or follow Canon and then zuko reappears after the end of the war going uh. I'm sorry. I'm uh firelord now though if you want to try again?? Cue everyone screaming abt zuko having met his soulmate/SS dating the FIRELORD)
Is SS an Earth Kingdom soldier or guard, or is he an ex-Fire Nation soldier that came to Ba Sing Se to get a fresh start? Either way, all of this is beautiful.
SS is so happy to meet his soulmate, and he’s a cute tea server with such a kind uncle! He’s clearly got some issues to work out, but the world is at war, so a hard background isn’t unexpected (esp considering Lee’s scar), and they have the rest of their lives to share their secrets and pain. SS won’t rush Lee. He just likes spending every moment he can with his soulmate.
And then Lee and his Uncle Mushi disappear. And then the Dai Lee take over Ba Sing Se.
And then, a few months later, Lee finds him again. Except this time his hair is longer, and his clothes are finer, and he says he has some explaining to do.....

A prompt:
An AU where Katara has severe prosopagnosia (face blindness)
It's incredibly frustrating because she can't recognize her own family members and has to use other little markers to help identify them.
And then one day, Katara enters the recently opened tea shop and the tea server's face is so wonderfully distinctive.
She can't help but stare...but not for the reasons Zuko might think.
Hello anon! Thanks for the prompt!
Not gonna lie, I've SUPER struggled with this because I, like my father, have a memory for faces. Names? No. Faces? Haunt me. So this might be a bit rough.
Katara didn't understand why she couldn't remember faces, but from the time she was a young child, she struggled to remember the face of anyone she met. She spilled enough frustrated tears to drown Ba Sing Se over the course of her short life.
Once they realized what was wrong, Hakoda and Kya did everything they could to work with Katara. It's why her father started keeping his braids in the same place, on the sides of his face. It helped that Kya already wore the same necklace everyday. Hakoda made Sokka a whalebone necklace, so she could recognize him, too.
When they met Aang, it was easy to remember his tattoos. Toph was identifiable by the headband she wore that didn't keep her bangs from falling in her face. That, and the distinct layer of dirt she kept over her skin.
So when Katara walked into a new tea shop in the Upper Ring, she never expected to recognize someone.
But the second she laid eyes on him, she was overwhelmed with the feeling that she knew who he was.
She just couldn't remember how they knew each other.
The tea server looked nervous as he approached her table. His eyes kept darting between her and Momo, his hands wringing on the notepad.
Katara studied his face, willing any memory to remind her who he was. His gold eyes, still shifting about, looked warm. His skin was pale and his complexion clear, except for the angry scar over his eye. Katara felt herself frowning. Whoever he was, he'd been through a lot of pain.
"Good afternoon," said, drawing her from her study of him. "Welcome to the Jasmine Dragon. What can I get for you today?"
Katara tilted her head, trying in vain once more to recall who he was. "I'm sorry, but I can't help but feel like we know each other," she said.
He blinked, stunned by her statement. "You... you don't recognize me?"
Katara shook her head. "I'm sorry, it's a- a curse I have, I can't remember faces. Yours feels so familiar, but I can't place it."
He stood very still, as if frozen from the inside out, an awkward tension growing between them. Finally he said, "We did know each other."
"Did?"
He nodded. "Back when I was- when I was chasing after something I shouldn't have been. But I'm different now. I've changed. I'm trying to be better for my uncle."
Katara smiled warmly. "What's your name?"
"Lee."
"Well, Lee, I think I'd like a cup of jasmine tea." He nodded, jotting down her order. "And- and if it's ok, I'd like to try and get to know who you are now."
His eyes widened, a small blush dusting his unmarred cheek. After a moment he cleared his throat, ducking his head but she thought she saw a smile forming on his lips.
"I'd like that," he whispered. Meeting her gaze, his eyes were burning. "I'll get your order right in."
Katara grinned at him. "Thank you, Lee."

Have you ever come across an idea in a Zutara fic that you enjoyed but sadly just wasn't used enough should totally be explored more?
Any tropes you love and just can't get enough of?
hi anon, thanks for the ask! sorry it took me a while to get to it!
three words: single. dad. zuko. i've been obsessed with this trope since i read evergreenonthehorizon's fic partners in learning (a modern au featuring katara as izumi's teacher, which i cannot recommend enough). i know children in fic is a bit of a contentious topic, and i'm not a huge fan of it myself, but there's something about the thought of zuko and izumi realizing katara is the missing piece of their family that just does it for me. katara stepping in as the mother izumi never had, and zuko falling even deeper in love with her seeing her interact with his daughter? *chef's kiss*
also the comedic potential of izumi embarrassing both zuko and katara by innocently (or not-so-innocently) pointing out their feelings for one another? unmatched.
another trope i can't get enough of: fake dating zk!!!! i've only found 2 fics with this premise (the proposal and souvenirs we never lose) but god they're SO GOOD. fake dating in general is such an amazing trope, but when you pair it with zk???? GOD-TIER.
as for other tropes i adore in zk fics:
- the fire lord and southern water tribe ambassador mutually pining for one another!!!! especially if it's slow burn adkfkdfldkf
- toph being the first one to realize they have feelings for each other, closely followed by suki. they go mad because no matter how much they assure zuko and katara their feelings are reciprocated, these two idiots just refuse to believe it
- iroh being the number one zutara stan. teasing zuko about his feelings!! embarrassing him in front of katara!! pushing him to confess!!
- modern au tea shop zk!!!! this trope is just so sweet and i love fumbling tea server zuko trying not to get all tripped up over the pretty girl who soon becomes a regular
- the sparring that ends up with them just conveniently a bit too close to one another and their gaze drops to each other's lips- (god, i live for this trope)
- travelling together!! i love any fic where they end up separated from the gaang and have to navigate their way across the four nations with only each other for back-up, especially if it happens when they're still enemies (either book 2, or book 3 post-DOBS). enemies to reluctant allies to friends to lovers slaps every fucking time. the color of the stars by bluenebulae is based on this premise, and i don't have enough words for how good it is.
and yes, this is an invitation to drop any and all fake dating/mixed family zk fics. i will be forever grateful.

So the game AU thing again.
An AU where Zuko and Iroh have been hiding in Ba Sing Se for years now, just working the tea shop. The Gaang arrive and and end up in the shop sitting down and everything.
After everything, Sokka is checking at least levels of everyone they come across. If he checks too much at once it can tip off the person being checked and it’s considered rude. (In battle they don’t really care, but in a city/public setting it’s very rude.)
So he’s checking levels in the tea shop and he thinks it’s all normal.
‘Level 8. Level 5. Oh, level 16, that’s pretty high for here. Level 4. Level 67. Level 25, a soldier, makes sense. Level-’ Then double takes because 67? What in the world is a tea server doing at such a ridiculous level? Especially one who’s only his age?
So he’s just staring in shock and it’s Zuko, but he’s not even acting weird and he comes over to take their order and Sokka panics and starts stuttering and looking startled. He would be so freaked out, but Zuko’s just like “??”
He introduces himself and Li and Sokka’s just like, ‘What else can I risk checking? Is it worth the risk if he notices?’
I have so many ideas-

modern au gaang + first job?
unless you count helping in gran gran’s store, sokka’s first official job is babysitting (aang).
unless you count helping in gran gran’s store and her numerous lemonade stands with aang, katara’s first official job is at the claire’s in the mall.
suki’s first real job is mopping floors and making coffee runs at a dojo, but soon enough she’s teaching her own classes.
zuko’s first job is as a tea server at his uncle’s teashop the jasmine dragon.
toph’s first job is also as a tea server at the jasmine dragon.
azula hates doing busywork and serving other people, but interning at a big tech company will look good on her college applications, so she suffers through it.
aang’s first official job is when suki gives him a percentage of her profits from her band’s album after he helps her promote it (he is very successful in this mission btw bc no one can say no to him), but before that he spent a lot of hours volunteering at the local soup kitchen and animal shelter.
ty lee makes a lot of money off of her large internet fanbase, sponsoring various products, selling her “bathwater,” etc.
mai doesn’t actually need a job because her parents just send her money, but she’s really into coding and ultimately ends up developing her own video game that gets really popular, which is a good thing too because she can no longer depend on her parents after her dad got prosecuted for his multiple corruption scandals. well.... she can’t say she’s surprised.

HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO VERSE.
this is a modern bending vigilante/hero au featuring zukka, mailee, yueki and a lot of hijinks!
the gaang are all 16-19 here, because while bruce wayne apparently has no problem with it, i’m not comfortable with having vigilantes who haven’t yet gone through puberty.
the avatar world is just one big city, and each of the nations/cities are different suburbs of the city.
kyoshi island, ember island, and boiling rock are small islands off of the city, similar to singapore’s sentosa island.
the city (republic city? i dunno, get back to me on this one) is full of heroes, vigilantes and villains alike. the fire nation is a criminal empire intent on taking over the city. the avatar is a hero who works to keep the balance of heroes and villains in the city, and stop the entire city from becoming a war zone.
however, the avatar disappeared 100 years ago, and no one was chosen to take up the mantle since. in the avatar’s absence, the fire nation was able to begin its quest to take over the city.
the heroes of the southern water tribe that were left after the various raids have left the southern water suburb on a mission to defeat the fire nation or die.
hakoda, alias chief, left his two young children in charge of their territory, despite them being a) children and b) relatively untrained.
katara, alias painted lady, is the only waterbender left in the southern water tribe. sokka, alias captain boomerang, is the only trained combat hero left in the southern water tribe. all those remaining are either children or incapable of fighting.
side tangent: when sokka does well, he calls himself “grand marshal boomerang” and when he does badly, he calls himself “private boomerang”. thank you to the crimily for coming up with this one!!
one night, when katara and sokka are out on patrol, they get chased by fire nation goons into the ice off of the southern harbour. there, they get into a fight over sokka’s sexist remarks and katara’s yelling having attracted the fire nation goons, and katara’s waterbending gets out of control. she breaks open an iceberg, only to find someone in there.
the two siblings approach the iceberg and break the person out. they are shocked to find a young boy in the unmistakable uniform of the avatar, resting next to a creature they’ve never seen before.
they wake the boy up, to find that his name is aang and he’s the next avatar. and that he has no idea of the fire nation’s quest to conquer the entire city, or the fact that the air nomads – heroes that didn’t resign to just one area of the city – hadn’t been seen for the same hundred years that he must’ve spent in the iceberg.
katara and a reluctant sokka take aang back to the apartment building where the remaining southern water suburb residents have been living and introduce him to everyone.
later that night, the three go out on patrol together. it’s a quiet night, and sokka thinks they might actually get through it without any incidents, until they find a woman being mugged.
sokka and katara are about to intervene, but aang takes down both thugs in a matter of seconds. aang, ignoring the slack jawed shock of his friends, asks if they could go penguin sledding. katara goes to agree, but is cut off by the shout of “MY HONOUR” from a nearby rooftop.
zuko, alias dragon prince, runs from the rooftop before they could find him. his father ozai, alias firelord, had sent him and his uncle iroh – formerly dragon of the west, now retired – to find the avatar. zuko had been banished from the fire nation territory years ago, after speaking up about a plan that would’ve cost them a whole division of goons and refusing to fight his father in an agni kai.
the kyoshi warriors are similar to the birds of prey or the amazons; they’re an all-female crime-fighting unit not directly associated with any of the kingdoms or nations. suki is their leader, and they don’t have secret identities like the other heroes.
iroh, bumi, piandao, jeong-jeong and p*kku are all retired heroes and a part of the order of the white lotus.
toph is the blind bandit and a hero, albeit a less morally structured and ‘good’ hero than the avatar, the painted lady, and captain boomerang. she was a part of the underground fighting ring ‘earth rumble’ when the gaang infiltrated the ring looking for intel and convinced her that her powers could be used for something better than beating bitches blue and making bank while doing it.
azula is firebolt, and she is as brilliant as she is terrifying. she’s arguably more feared than the firelord, mainly because she’s the one who frequents other areas and actually goes on missions. ozai just sits on his stupid throne and yells at people and manipulates his children like the little bitch he is.
mai and ty lee are azula’s sidekicks, and are known as blade and tightrope respectively. also: they’re lesbians, harold.
yue is a part of the northern water tribe’s group of heroes, alongside her family. they tried to marry her off to hahn and have her trained in healing instead of fighting, but she rebelled and threatened to go out on her own, so they relented. yue’s hero alias is tui, but she will be called sailor moon at least three times.
jet and his freedom fighters are a group of anti-heroes who aren’t afraid to hurt innocent people in their pursue of ‘justice’.
zhao is a villain who works for the firelord, under the alias admiral, and he’s an asshole. using the yuyan archers, he manages to capture aang and takes him to a fire nation stronghold. zuko finds out about this, and not wanting admiral asshole to get the upper hand, dresses as the blue spirit for the first time to rescue aang.
during the siege of the north, zhao “kills” yue. she fakes her own death and disappears into hiding until the final battle, in which she kills zhao because it’s what she deserves.
the gaang know that yue is alive, because she’s nice enough to not do them like that, but they have to keep up appearances. because of this, sokka amps up the heartbreak and clings to suki a lot. that’s why a lot of outsiders begin to think that sokka dated yue and is dating suki, though in reality yue and suki are dating each other.
zuko and iroh, after the siege of the north and a trap set by azula, disappear into hiding and decide to take refuge in ba sing se, knowing that the fire nation wouldn’t think to look for them there.
ba sing se is a section of the city that has been fenced off in order to prevent an influx of heroes and villains. the dai li, who keep a tight grip on the suburb and ensure that the residents don’t know of the war raging outside the walls, are a group of “heroes”.
of course, the fence does nothing to prevent zuko and iroh, the gaang, and later azula, mai and ty lee from entering ba sing se and turning it into their own warzone.
iroh fulfils his dream of finally owning a tea shop and zuko, when not working in the tea shop, spends his nights lingering in the shadows of ba sing se as the blue spirit.
sokka, desperate for a warm drink and something to do while the others do their bending training, wanders into the jasmine dragon one afternoon and is served by “lee”.
neither know the other’s civilian identity, so there’s no shady business, just pining over the cute customer/server. sokka strikes a conversion and the two begin flirting chatting. it’s going really well, and you can almost see the romance blooming.
and then in walks azula, flanked by mai and ty lee, all in costume.
sokka and zuko both leap up from their seats and into fighting stances. both are confused as to why the other jumped up, and then azula calls zuko brother and it clicks in sokka’s mind.
he starts yelling at zuko for a lot of things, including yue’s “death” which is how zuko realises who he is. zuko starts yelling back because he’s only once met a fight he didn’t like. in the background of this argument, iroh is trying to fight azula, mai and ty lee to varying degrees of success.
it’s funny that i say degrees, because this is when azula sets fire to the jasmine dragon. iroh grabs the two dumbass arguing teens and shoves them outside as he too runs, telling zuko to meet at their rendezvous point at sunrise.
azula, mai and ty lee chase after zuko and sokka (who are still arguing as they run from the three girls). mai and ty lee don’t want to chase them, because zuko has always been better to them than azula, but defying azula would be a death sentence.
sokka pulls zuko into a building for coverage, and because azula is azula, she summons the dai li and has them surround the building. there would be no leaving without confronting the dai li, and thus zuko and sokka are trapped.
sokka confronts zuko and basically asks how he could justify the fire nation’s villainy, how he could support a monster who’s killing hundreds of people. zuko defends his father blindly because he’s been raised to believe that his father is right, that his father has to be right, and this southern water scum is wrong. but zuko’s losing his grip on the argument and is becoming more and more hysterical but sokka is so calm, so sure of himself, and the dam finally breaks.
zuko crumples to the ground in tears, and now sokka’s gotta deal with this because ozai is a shitface and has been brainwashing his son for years and wow fuck the fire nation.
mai and ty lee, having taken down the dai li, burst in to find zuko crying his eyes out in sokka’s arms. they teasingly ask if they’re interrupting something and laugh as zuko next to sprints out of the building, sokka hot on his heels.
this is the last straw for zuko, who defects from the fire nation, hangs up his dragon prince uniform and fully becomes the blue spirit, a hero who works with the gaang to eventually take down the fire nation.
also, at some stage zuko rescues a turtleduck that got stuck up a tree. don’t ask me how this happens.
