Searching best practices on JSTOR
Hi Tumblr researchers,
As promised, we're going to dive into some best practices for searching on JSTOR. This'll be a long one!
The first thing to note is that JSTOR is not Google, so searches should not be conducted in the same way.
More on that in this video:
youtube
Basic Search on JSTOR
To search for exact phrases, enclose the words within quotation marks, like "to be or not to be".
To construct a more effective search, utilize Boolean operators, such as "tea trade" AND china.
youtube
Advanced Searching on JSTOR
Utilize the drop-down menus to refine your search parameters, limiting them to the title, author, abstract, or caption text.
Combine search terms using Boolean operators like AND/OR/NOT and NEAR 5/10/25. The NEAR operator finds keyword combinations within 5, 10, or 25 words of each other. It applies only when searching for single keyword combinations, such as "cat NEAR 5 dog," but not for phrases like "domesticated cat" NEAR 5 dog.
Utilize the "Narrow by" options to search for articles exclusively, include/exclude book reviews, narrow your search to a specific time frame or language.
To focus your article search on specific disciplines and titles, select the appropriate checkboxes. Please note that discipline searching is currently limited to journal content, excluding ebooks from the search.

Finding Content You Have Access To
To discover downloadable articles, chapters, and pamphlets for reading, you have the option to narrow down your search to accessible content. Simply navigate to the Advanced Search page and locate the "Select an access type" feature, which offers the following choices:
Tumblr media
All Content will show you all of the relevant search results on JSTOR, regardless of whether or not you can access it.
Content I can access will show you content you can download or read online. This will include Early Journal Content and journals/books publishers have made freely available.
Once you've refined your search, simply select an option that aligns with your needs and discover the most relevant items. Additionally, you have the option to further narrow down your search results after conducting an initial search. Look for this option located below the "access type" checkbox, situated at the bottom left-hand side of the page.
Additional resources
For more search recommendations, feel free to explore this page on JSTOR searching. There, you will find information on truncation, wildcards, and proximity, using fields, and metadata hyperlinks.

And with this post I conclude my journey of becoming a teacher. Thank you to everyone who has been following along, ever since I started posting in High School. It's been almost 10 years of working towards this diploma. 3 years of High School, 5 years of University and 1 1/2 years of teaching training has gone by so quickly I cannot quite comprehend I am there where I dreamt of being when I was 16. I know she would be proud we did it - so this is for her. I will make sure to become a kind, compassionate, patient and knowledgeable teacher. I truly believe in the power of education and knowledge, and I will forever fight for those who are being denied this power. As Malala once said: “Let us pick up our books and our pens, they are the most powerful weapons.”
However your books may look like, I hope you find the courage to wield them.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Couldn't do jack shit today; i mean I completed my homework but couldn't do jack shit to further the test prep so it was a really disappointing day
-> I've got a full week of daily 3 hour subjective tests, alternating 3 hour mains objective tests for the whole of February and then the final exams for the whole of March, during which at the inst. the next sem will start. It's gonna be a hectic ( times 10) 3 months and I'm regretting all my life's decisions but anything for the best college eh?

Because I am collaborating on a project with colleagues (developing a team-taught course) I sent them a draft document via our institutional file-sharing cloud. One of them just emailed to ask if he could edit directly, or if he should download it, make edits, and then resend.
...This may be a long year of collaboration.

As promised, here's my grad student's guide to formatting citations! This is essentially the presentation I gave to my undergraduate students to help them know when and how to cite things properly in their papers. The links included are:
Also, the Zotero web extensions work with @jstor so that you can import all of the information necessary for a citation directly from your browser! No need to enter things manually!

Wip is slowly growing, it might have (2) scenes!! 😂 It's the horny continuation of this fic, and basically the first time Mishanks sleep together, with a general undercurrent of learning from each other and how precious it is to trust someone enough to say: guide me through this

Shanks moves his head a bit, curious as to what prevents Mihawk from fully relaxing on top of him. Taking a wild guess at the swordsman’s downturned face, he'd say it's still his fascination about his chest, fingers ghosting near a streak of cum cooling on his abdomen.
He definitely makes a mental note to lose the shirt the next time they duel.
Mihawk grumbles a bit when he hugs him and pulls him closer, turning to look at him all sour.
“You're sticky”, he mumbles. His hair is tousled, perfectly coiffed curls sticking now in disarray.
Shanks fails to bite back a smile. He raises an eyebrow.
“Oh, sorry, did you want to move?”.
Golden eyes narrow, studying him. After a long moment Mihawk gives out the barest little sigh, accommodating himself on Shanks’ chest. He almost gets to count to ten before the other grabs his hand and positions it between his shoulder blades, face firmly turned away.
Shanks snorts, starting to caress the back of Mihawk's neck, his chest doing something funny when the swordsman melts at the touch of his hand in his hair. He thinks about the knives again, and about Mihawk's distrustful look in the face of praise.
“I knew you'd be a natural”, he mentions lightly, cutting himself from saying even stupider shit, like I love you, or something.
He cranes his face a bit, surprised when such a declaration is met with silence instead of a dismissive scoff, and at the slight jostle Mihawk turns his face a bit further away. It occurs to him in a fit of clarity and glee that the swordsman is bashful, of all things.

The thing that people don't understand about the charter school debate is that the reason they have higher scores is because they're allowed to kick kids out. When you kick out every kid who has a disability or gets lower than an 85 on 3 tests well guess what ur scores r gonna be higher. Lol.
