wow duolingo sucks so bad these days

#it's so gamified and competitive and full of ads and if you run out of hearts you can't even do anything for hours #it's just mindless repetition and learning to recognise the shape of words without having to think about it #anyway i started learning russian on wlingua app and it's 100000 times better #no ads and it actually teaches you grammar alongside vocabulary #with spaced repetition and a logical structure of lessons #and also reading comprehension exercises and writing exercises #so you actually learn how to write the words unlike in duolingo? #well i suppose duolingo also has the option to type with a keyboard #but the bird app sucks in many other ways

I love love love that the ccs will be forced to use the translator in order to communicate with the new ccs joining qsmp because that’s what it’s there for!!!!! it’s a translator!!! use it to translate, even if both of you are able to speak the same language!

I don’t see enough people use the translator, especially when the ccs are both able to speak (usually) english, and it’s still great that they can speak easier if they speak the same language, but the language barrier is one of the causes for the creation of the qsmp! Let the language barrier be a barrier in the first place, and let the translator do the work it was meant to do!

Let people who physically can’t speak the same language interact! It’s part of what makes qsmp qsmp, and even though it has impacted hugely just from adding people who generally create content and talk in different languages, I do think it somewhat lacks in the people speaking different languages category, because while that is true, it is also somewhat untrue in that all of the ccs can speak one of the same language (usually english), even if they’re not a natural at it!

Now, that’s not a bad thing at all! But, it does blur the speaking different languages problem that was meant to occur in qsmp. They speak different languages! Let them speak whatever language they want and let the translator do the work! Again, that is what it is there for! It is a translator! (I’m looking at you twitter)

And even if it takes a million repeats of the same sentence for someone to finally get what another person is trying to say, a hundred fuck-ups of the translation or a thousand language barrier/cultural miscommunications, again, qsmp was made for this to happen! It was made so people who come from different backgrounds and are usually unable to interact because of cultural/language barriers can interact, whether it start out negative or positive!

And I trust them (the ccs and fans) to communicate if controversy/confusion happens culturally and language-wise, and (hopefully) for the fans to not turn anything minor** into a huge drama, so I am extremely excited to see the ccs be forced into using the translator!

So uh guess who's finally properly learning Farsi (I should've learned this when I was like 4 but I was an idiot child who knew nothing of the importance of my culture-)

And has decided to memorize words by translating cookie run character names

(I also am learning how to write in Farsi so my writing is. Very bad and it only looks passable here because I traced over the words typed-out in ibis paint x :'3)

I may decide to post more of these in case anyone else may be interested in learning miscellaneous Farsi words. I don't know if anyone would be, but maybe-

I have been really sleeping on this, but Keshet 100% starts to pick up Urianger's speech patterns by like ShB/EW. Urianger's been helping him with his Eorzean Common since late ARR, teaching him how to read and write since post SB -- there is no way that after spending that much time studying language with him that Keshet doesn't start dropping "hath"s and "tis"s in every conversation. He doesn't really get how thou/thy works, but he keeps saying them anyway without even meaning to, incorrectly like 50% of the time. He'll stumble over a word like "spoon" but then pull out "sanguine" or "antipathy" in the next sentence.

Thancred has to step in and start giving him "how to talk like a normal person" lessons

Very bad grade in therapy today

quick writing update uhhh for some reason the second chapter of angry mulch is kicking my ass badly but I just finished a short lil vashwood oneshot for valentines day that hilariously shook out to be exactly 666 words? anyway theres that and I have a couple other oneshot drafts but I can't quite decide what to work on so

I will most likely write all of these (except maybe the ghost one im not 100% sure on it) but this Might effect what order I write them in

Sometimes I feel like I write really... simple? Which isn't a bad thing. Just sometimes rereading my stuff feels like I'm reading a fairy tale (ignoring the actual Faerie Stories I write galore lol)

#rant #mejo writing #like. i get it? part of it is i lean toward simpler words because i want as MANY people to understand what i mean as possible #and im used to tutoring a lot of people of varying vocabulary and the simpler more understandable words the BETTER when #trying to teach math frankly. and then also when i speak in french or chinese i likewise lean toward more common words #since im more certain im expressing myself in the way i intend. whereas if i use specialized chinese words theres a higher risk i say #something i didnt mean. and in general i just notice a lot of things i got used to in french grammar i... #oddly ended up integrating into how i write english. which is absolutely bizarre to me. and tjen since reading more chinesr #ive really adapted to more SHORT sentences just focusing on making my point. #and then of course. my biggest style influences are haruki murakami and edgar allan poe. #i dont pick as perfect words as poe (unfortunately). but i like the idea of prose written as if its poetry. with thought put into #the length of sentences and SINGLE WORDS as sentences. and cut off sentences. and alliteration. to control #the reader experience and affect the impact of the prose on the emotions. #and then murakami lol. murakami??? my favorite short story he wrote is The Kangaroo Communique #which i think explains a LOT about why the fuck i write the way i do #have you ever read his stories in The Elephant Vanishes??? #its like this... the ideas and words and settings are ordinary. but the experience is emotional and surreal and magical and it swallows you #inside the narrator's head. #and you truly have no idea what objective reality in the story is. only what the character narrating is Claiming to experience (and they #might be lying about themselves and whete their attention is too). #and i LOVE it. i love it i love it. it FEELS like being in my mind. so i try to write that way. #and i almost feel like when the prose is simpler words... its more like how a general person may think things #(at least how i do. with simple understandable explanation) and so its easier to suck the reader into the #narration pov's mind #and get them to feel what the character feels and notice what the charqcter avoids. and feel reality of the story #becoming as warped and unreliable as the narrator.

Can I just for a minute complain as someone dyslexic about how when I was young everyone would always be like "well look up the spelling in the dictionary"?

Just now, I go to type a word and I spell it something like "erevicobly", which is obviously wrong, but... no idea

Well, I throw it in the search engine* and find out it's irrevocably (didn't spell it right there either, but got it close enough spellcheck could fix it)

Now you might notice something here, which is if I'd looked it up in the dictionary, I wouldn't have found it, no matter how long and hard I searched, because I'd be looking under "er" not "ir"

So do you see why that advice made me mad as hell as a kid, and I stand by my feelings today?

*literally one of the few ways search engines are a blessing is being a really great way to find spellings

#like my typing is great with very few mistakes; but my spelling while mostly alright these days isn't great #cause like... literal diagnosed dyslexia since I was a tiny kid #and let me tell you; no matter the reason; people will shit on you so much for poor spelling (no matter the age too) #fucker; we speak english; everything you said was a lie #there's not (consistent) rhyme or reason to it; and sounding it out is terrible advice cause we've all got fucking accents #and sometimes even if you don't the word is fucking worcestershire and you're fucked #actually gets me a bit heated how many good teachers I had who still acted like this #I actually have many strong opinions on linguistics and teaching despite not being a linguist or a teacher #give me descriptivism or give me death #prescriptivism can burn in hell where it belongs #and one thing that technology has 100% made better (at least for me as a dyslexic adult) is being able to spell well and quickly #it's an aid and an accommodation to me; we just don't look at it like that #I literally can't even spell accommodation; but you get to see the right word there #I have a vast vocabulary... I just can't fucking spell half of it #so prespellcheck you just kind of... had my writing look a lot worse and be a lot harder to parse #the main thing that helped with my spelling wasn't school or anything... it was everquest #you want to be able to type to people and be understood; there's no spellscheck or anything... you work to get it right quickly #mmos are a great way to teach typing if you don't have voice chat #similarly it's actually thanks to tumblr that I'm a quick typist; zero formal training with it and sucked through my teens #was a quick chicken scratch typist... pretty fast; but I pecked #through typing a lot of messages and asks to people on here and wanting to do it quickly I stumbled on something pretty... #close to what I think they teach; though I'm pretty sure there's gotta be some differences #it's nothing formal for one thing; it's all muscle memory; the fingers go where they go #but I can type pretty fast and accurately with my eyes closed #and it's just cause... I wanted to say things to people and say it quickly #eh...
