Rewatching the final episode now recognizing that the Jughead walking along side Betty in the finale is writer!Jughead, who just wants to make sure Betty is happy and fulfilled with the ending that he wrote for her... Sorry to everyone who was frustrated with the finale centering around Betty, but RAS wrote that episode framing just for me.

Where do you think it all went wrong with Riverdale?
honestly, part of me is like, the show's over and nothing but fandom matters. so who cares?
the other part of me loves to complain about Riverdale and will continue to do so until the day I die in the parking lot of Michael's Diner in Montgomeryville, PA at the age of 86. so, long-winded answer under the cut
I'm tempted to say it's the s4 b*rchie kiss. It was so wildly out of character for both Betty and Archie that it's laughable. You know how you can tell when something is just blatantly OOC with no justification? They...don't justify it. They find ways to dance around any interaction that might offer clarification. They mute the reactions of the characters who should be devastated by it. And then they jump ahead 7 years so it's easier to just handwave it away as something that happened a long time ago.
but the thing is, I did keep watching after that. I thought: okay, at least we should get an exes-to-lovers arc out of this, which is one of my favorite tropes. there is no way they would spend 4 seasons developing Bughead as this loving, supportive, communicative, sexy, and almost-unbelievably-compatible couple just to tear them apart and never do anything with that dynamic again. maybe it'll be even sweeter seeing them come back together after so much hurt and longing.
boy was i wrong!!!!!!!!!
so, the episode that actually made me stop watching for good, with the exception of some standalones like The Jughead Paradox and the finale, was the s5 musical. that was when i realized that this team of writers was 100% willing, maybe even eager, to completely drop storylines they themselves had been building over the course of a season - do a 180 with all of the characterization and relationships - and then act as though the buildup they wrote never even happened.
in this case, i'm specifically talking about the Bughead reunion storyline they dropped in s5. i'm not going to pretend like it was a GREAT buildup - and it was mostly on Jughead's side, Betty's character in s5 was basically an emotionless misery bot that had sex sometimes - but it was there. Jughead told Tabitha he had unresolved feelings around Betty. that's followed by an entire episode that lays out Betty & Jug's time jump relationship, and how Jughead still believes she's the one who saves him from himself. they work on a case together, they start opening up to one another. Jughead's so worried about her he can't eat.
and then...you know what happens.
(i'll also note here that there was random bts stuff that strongly indicated the musical ep storyline had a drastic last-minute rewrite: lili tweeted a blue dress, suggesting the song with that line was meant for her character; RAS said cole had to do last-minute recording sessions; supposedly crew members have confirmed this was the case, too. since none of it's 100% confirmed you can take it all with a grain of salt, but i believe it.)
it was so fucking insulting as a viewer to give my time and attention to a show made by people who would not only randomly drop the threads they set up, but torpedo them altogether, and then behave like the fans are the ones somehow at fault for expecting a story that actually follows through on its own emotional and plot beats. we're just shippers, so our opinions are dumb and biased! it's just a tv show, so who cares! get over it!
so, i stopped watching, because i knew they would continue to write without any thought or respect for their characters or their audience, and therefore inevitably write themselves into another corner. and, shocker, i was right. they did it again, whisking everyone away to the 1950s because actually resolving any of the scenarios they set up was ToO hArD. why bother when you could just make every single character Righteously Angry and Incurably Horny all the time, lecture the audience about social issues that have already been mainstream progressive for the last several decades, and call it a "love letter" to your fans?

the 100 - bellarke! their growth and development was just incredible and beautiful and they were so endgame coded and were supposed to be endgame, beliza said it and they had so much chemistry and deserved so much better!

down at the drive-in
When Riverdale High and Southside High merge just before the start of their senior year, Betty Cooper and Jughead Jones are stuck sharing the title of editor-in-chief of the Blue and Gold. They figure they can split the work and keep to themselves, but neither of them counted on Jughead’s beloved Twilight Drive-In becoming the victim of sabotage. There’s a real mystery in Riverdale, and Betty and Jughead must team up to solve it.

Are you ever going to write Bughead again?
sure why not.
the 3 people who would read it are how team work makes the dream work.
nah but really, i've just been horrifyingly busy for what? the last year? 2? i'm very tired still have a unfinished doc open and mocking me but my student goes home in a couple of weeks and i plan to sit on my sofa for, like, a month and just ignore everyone who starts emails and texts with "hey!" before asking me for something, ha.
so we'll see what happens then i suppose.

Riverdale: The Sweet Hereafter
"Riverdale" was a show I watched back in 2017. Everyone I knew was watching the show at that time. I started watching it during secondary school when, as I mentioned, everyone was into it. If someone wasn't watching, you would probably hear, "You must watch this iconic media piece." Okay, that's a bit far-fetched, but someone would recommend it if you were into shows like "The Vampire Diaries" or "Pretty Little Liars." Both of those shows had ended, and "Riverdale" stepped in to provide a sense of comfort—a dark show with a big mystery. That was the formula for almost every teen TV show. It filled a void for those of us who had just finished those shows and introduced us to iconic characters: Archie Andrews, the all-American teenager; Betty Cooper, the girl next door; Jughead Jones (skip); Veronica Lodge, the she-wolf of Wall Street and Cheryl Blossom, the red-haired diva.
With the show having 13 episodes and being released weekly on Netflix, it gained a cult following in my school. Coming into school, when the last few episodes aired, I heard phrases like "Bughead forever" or "Barchie forever." It was a debate, and I was Team Barchie, but that's a story for another time. Still, the show stood on its own, with people creating their own Riverdale fan accounts and collecting memorabilia. The show could do no harm...
However, it did; yes, I still enjoyed it. I remained invested. I watched the slow decline of the show in my school. It became so far-fetched that even the die-hard season one fan began to fade; no one was watching anymore, and the sense of community was gone. People no longer praised the show for its stylistic choices; instead, they questioned the writing itself. Remember that moment when Archie's retort to a character dropping out of high school for drug dealing was, "That means you haven't known the triumphs and defeats, the epic highs and lows of high school football"? It was jarring, to say the least.
Riverdale became notorious for continually one-upping itself as if unpredictability was its sole mission. Who could have predicted discussions about tickling fetishes involving high school students? Payment aside, it was still an eyebrow-raising narrative choice. This was the show's identity – a whirlwind from steamy encounters to preppy murders, cults, and bombs. At the same time, characters managed to attend school and perform musicals such as Carrie, Heathers, Hedwig, and you won't believe this: The American Psycho the Musical… Oh yes, it exists, and pursue higher education.
The show recently ended with an unexpected detour into the 1950s – an era fraught with its own set of questions considering the show's approach to sensitive issues. How did it all unfold? The characters gained superpowers through an open door in an alternate universe, setting the stage for a dramatic series of events. As Season Five drew close, Cheryl stumbled upon the chilling account of her ancestor's demise and unwittingly triggered a spell. Meanwhile, Archie and Betty found themselves in a passionate tryst just as a bomb detonated underneath them. The convergence of these chaotic elements led to a counter spell, and I'll leave it to you to experience the madness firsthand. Go watch the show, please…
The show ended with everything I wished for; it's everything I wanted an ending. I knew there wouldn't be a big bad or something catching my eye for another season. The tale had reached its final chapter. As the curtain fell on Riverdale, I saw a farewell to beloved characters and the town itself, a nostalgic journey from past to present, and now the vacant town. It was something sweet; it was bite-sized. There will always be a question from others about why I hold this show near my heart. It's because it was there for every moment of my life. The show ran for six years! When I was in college, I was still watching the episodes. My uncle and I were big Archie Comics fans. If you didn't know, Riverdale is based loosely…very loosely to the Archie Comics, and my uncle would have given me a comic every time I visited, every birthday, and every Christmas. Riverdale wasn't his cup of his, but it was mine. I catch myself rephrasing dialogue while I rewatch the show.
Goodbye Riverdale

2023 FFRC - September🍂
Hello friends! I hope you've had a wonderful September. We've started my daughter's senior year with her choosing to join the high school football team instead of the soccer team (to the shock of everyone - including her soccer coach). Therefore, we've been spending every Friday night at the field - and she scored a touchdown in her first game - so that's exciting.
My 2023 @fanfic-reading-challenge is nearly complete. The challenge has various completion levels - and if you're looking for something to help motivate you to read new things or expand your range - or even if you just want to challenge yourself, you should join us. You don't have to wait until the new year to start - and there are a bunch of us on the Discord server and it's a really nice and encouraging place to be.

September 2023
Tumblr media
I read 58 new stories this month - and nearly 300 chapters. I'm closing in on 17 million words, so my year-long goal of 20 million words still isn't out of the realm of possibility. I also did a few podfic recordings... and was highly critical of all of them so I didn't post them. Maybe after I get more practise. lol.
Anyway, I’ve gathered a couple recs. I hope you enjoy them. 💖
–*–
before i knew which life was mine (3 fic series) by @smc-27 (Harry/Allie - The Society)  Summary: She’s got this weird feeling that everything with him is so natural and normal that there’s no way to imagine them not eventually ending up friends. Which is a fucked up thought, because prior to all this, all they had ever shared were barbs back and forth, or her calling him out on being a jerk to her sister. Notes: Okay - so this series is three separate fics that feel like they're unconnected - but really they are completely connected. They're like different dimensions or universes where Harry and Allie were friends (and they don't stay just friends). These are the "other worlds".
–*–
The Percy/Jenna Anon Collection by Anonymous (Percy/Jenna - RPF - All E) Fic 1 - Howlin’ For You - A night of drunken UNO leads to explicit actions between two friends who have been secretly sleeping together. Fic 2 - Lonely Boy - A surprise visit between two friends, a phone call, and a splash of angst. And sex. Fic 3 - Gold on the Ceiling - When Jenna tells Percy it’s over she’s not sure what that means for either of them. And she doesn’t even begin to understand the gravity of her choice until she’s forced to put work on hold for the actor’s strike. Has she even been living? Or merely existing.. Light angst, heavy sex? But it’s introspective? Notes: Okay - so RPF isn't for everyone. It is for me though. This series was written by the same Anon author (it's very clear that it's the same author) - I don't know who it is, but they deserve a huge cookie. I cried during the third one. And then had to fan myself. It's an odd conundrum. The writing is amazing. I would read a million more stories by this author - rpf or fandom or whatever. If I can only figure out who they are. 😉
–*–
three conversations about one thing by @imreallyloveleee (Bughead - T)  Summary: He’d known there would be consequences when he made this decision. But he hadn’t realized how quickly they might steamroll right over him. (Jughead & Veronica & Cheryl & Betty & memories of the future. Set post-7x19.) Notes: An absolutely lovely post-script on the final season of Riverdale.

Guilty Pleasure Ships
I ship Barson (Benson + Barba from SVU), Rollisi (Rollins + Carisi from SVU), Bughead (Betty + Jughead from Riverdale), and Jabitha (Jughead + Tabitha from Riverdale) with all of the heart! These ships are examples of true love. No one can tell me otherwise but I also secretly love other ships. Barisi (Barba + Carisi from SVU) is so cute! When they were together, the scenes were iconic and/or funny. Although they're not gay in the show obviously, I can see them being a couple in an alternate universe. This ship causes online fights among fans but I don't care. They're adorable!! Jeronica (Jughead + Veronica from Riverdale) is underrated. I know that they're complete opposites and Veronica thinks that he's weird in the comics but they got chemistry on the show during times when they feel lonely. They can talk and team up. It's strange but yet seems right at the same time. I love it!

The Great Indoors
Tumblr media
You may think there aren't much changed here, but upon inspection -- I guess they threw Veronica an undershirt, and flattened her butt a bit (one less shiny ass gleam). A little weird they left the word "color" in "color tv" -- they frequently drop what has come to be a default setting so redundancy.
The thing I have learned since putting up this blog -- and keeping going longer than I thought I would -- is that that Riverdale show did some weird things to how Archie gets related online. Apparently they came to a conclusion that everyone needs to hook up with everyone else at some point, and there will be a fan base that develops particularly enthralled with each coupling. Slash fiction of a sort. So. Veronica and Jughead -- did they become an item on that show such that it leads to a scouring of the comics for accompanying images?
The concept of "Bughead" makes sense to me, and has its presence in the comic books. But then -- "Jeronica"? Well, I suppose the fun there may be plucking out the few stories where this apply -- when the generally adversarial relationship between the two characters -- and that is a fun theme -- turn somehow -- though, with some exceptions of plucking humor out of context and one sided fooling to get at the other one -- I see no romantic element in any of it. But. On that angle. You have this one, " The Survivors", which pits Jughead with Veronica against Archie and Betty. And Jughead teams up with Veronica to put Reggie in his place in "The Invisible Man" from 1962. 1993's "Escort Supreme. And -- well, unless I want to expand my parameters, or look deeper, I have just that short a list.

i’m sorry but unless the writers bring back the OG couples SOON, season 7 of RD will have the lowest budget ever (as if the lack of budget for RD promotional wasn’t evident this season) and the average viewership will be 100k because the episodes seem to her lower and lower. I don’t see RD making noise anywhere anymore. And I don’t particularly think the OG couples and dynamics could do much to save this mess – what’s done is done. It can’t go back but at least should help to hold the numbers for a little more, letting the views go bellow 200k is embarrassing. Imagine trying to sell a show like this. I feel bad for the actors.
Agreed, anon. Bringing back the OG couples (which I do think they intend to do by end of season, despite Teddy boy's wishes. Oh to be a fly on the wall during Ted's probable conversation with the network) will boost the numbers a bit. Maybe make more people interested in s7. But it won't get the show to anywhere near what it has been. They're barely cracking 200k now, their last season could maybe have 400k viewers by keeping Bughead and Varchie?
Also, to the people who say they're renewed and they don't care - they do. I promise they do. For one thing, the rewatchability of this show is its latent profit, and what they're doing now is killing it. Second, nobody around the very reputation-based industry that is Hollywood wants to be known as the team that murdered a profitable show. Renewed or not, this sinking ship is sinking all of their careers and nobody wants that. That's probably where the rumors of the network stepping in came from, since the network wouldn't care unless profits or legality were affected.
