This man has slowly become immortal by turning evil rocks into evil goo and becoming one with the evil goo, and is now plagued by an evil goo ghost. he may have conducted some unethical experiments regarding evil rock chemistry but it's fine because he's gay and trans. I will defend this man and his crimes until I die.

29. Dr. Blackbyrd and Dr. Eosin (Any Pronouns) @cherry-spot

Dr Blackbyrd and Dr Eosin are absolutely a recipe for disaster, both being digital beings that helped found (with two of their other coworkers) CMYK Labs, a genetics facility that also focuses on more niche subjects depending on the branch.

Byrd primarily focuses on robotics, altering animals in her experiments to test the capabilities of artificial intelligence and cybernetics. She even added a good amount of augmentations to herself; she used to be a purely organic (albeit, AI, but has a physical body) harpy, but now she has a variety of features such as metal claws, a bladed tail, and metal teeth.

He's very eccentric and chaotic, often working on impulse with the wild ideas he spawns in his head. He can be a bit on the cruel side sometimes, leading to his closest friends and partners leaving him, causing him to stick by Eosin's side (who encourages this behaviour).

Their favourite experiment is the creation of Thanatos, an altered lioness that they practically remade to be entirely robotic, featuring a bold metal mane as well. She's essentially their guard lion at this point - being their biggest and strongest experiment, as well as most loyal.

Eosin focuses on otherworldly creatures and monsters, as well as advanced computer viruses. They're responsible for a virus that effects Byrd's behaviour, and even managed to build augmentations on their coworkers in order to hold power over them as well. Their main goal is to essentially make the world their own personal sandbox, getting Byrd to team up with them to use her digital powers to achieve this goal.

Eosin is a lot more calculated and mysterious compared to Byrd, only speaking when necessary and always being careful with her words. She comes off as very polite as well, trying her best to appear as rational as possible. If brought to violence, though, she's a swift force to be reckoned with, practically an eldritch being of sorts, her incredible height of 11ft tall aiding her as well.

His favourite experiment is the virus he injected into Byrd, named nov288.vax, or "Nox" for short. It's a worm that overstimulates her system to the point of her having a meltdown if she tries to get rid of it, as well as giving her a boost of euphoria if she continues to act cruel and malicious.

Assorted Sonic OCs from the past few months, largely inspired by the IDW comics (descriptions and context under the cut)

1-5: Design for a(n ex?) girlfriend of Surge's from her pre-Starline days, based on Surge's concept art. She’s a rat and her name is Riot Roadkill; she dressed more like a gyaru in the past (short skirt, loose socks) but nowadays wears the one-piece with the mesh (and sometimes with the jacket), also taken from Surge concept art. Final design has light orange fur and teal eyes to complement Surge the way Amy's pink fur and green eyes are designed to complement Sonic’s blue and green; hair is based on yanki (Japanese delinquent) fashion. "Ash Wrath" (name taken from the Ashura glitch Surge is based on) used to lead a biker gang before Starline got to her, and Riot was her second-in-command. Riot (who fights with a bat also taken from Surge art) was forced to step up after the boss vanished, and wasn’t expecting the stranger who wandered onto gang turf to be her...

6: Three nice Zeti (I’ve been calling them the Gentle Three) based on a theory I had about mainstream Zeti society and a potential counterculture; Ziro likes protecting animals and has a tiny dragon companion, Zen is a healer who talks like a hippie grandma, and Zaffiti likes to create things instead of destroying them

7: Since the pirates are all said to be gone in IDW, I made a new villain/rival for Blaze to fight. Bedlam is a caracal queen from 100 years ago who became a vengeful ghost of blue fire after the Sol Emeralds disowned her for refusing to change her cruel, selfish, and greedy ways; based on Blaze's concept art.

8-9: Made some friends for Silver from his own time. Based their collective color schemes on the CMYK palette to mimic Team Sonic being primary colors. Copper the Axolotl is ridiculously bubbly for someone who lives in a perpetual apocalypse, and lives semi-underwater or something which is why she dresses all beachy. Gold the Mink is a friendly rival to Silver, cocky and laidback to contrast with Silver's dorky seriousness, but he’s still a nice guy. Design is based on Silver’s concept art; Idk yet if Gold would be an AI or what but if you know your Sonic comic history you can take a wild guess who inspired him lol.

10: These two, tentatively named Smoke and Mirror, are henchwomen to a greater evil and part of an idea I had for a magical girl-inspired Amy Rose solo game. They’re based on Amy's friends Patty and Monica from the early-90s Sonic manga; Smoke is black and white while Mirror is supposed to be dark purple. Smoke is a Canadian marble fox whose magic manifests as smoke/vapor/etc. Mirror is a garden dormouse who specializes in mirror magic (deflecting, copying, etc.). They both like to playfully tease Amy in a way that surprisingly never goes too far. They claim to serve their master faithfully as their master’s familiars, but not even they know entirely how they got to be that way...

How to Organize a Zine 101 #15

I’ve been putting this specific topic off since forever because ever since I thought about writing about it, I figured I should make a quick and sweet InDesign tutorial for it.

Alas, four whole ass years have passed, I came to the conclusion that I might never do such a thing and thus I’ll try to explain this the best I can in the simple format of a blog post (or several). Let’s talk

Designing your Zine Pt. 1: Software Picks

So, I don’t know if you know but I have a bachelor’s degree in Communication Design. Therefore I will be more thorough than I’m going to be on book-keeping and other stuff surrounding zines that I do not have a degree in.

First of all, I’d generally advise you to have an actual designer on your mod team, or outsource this portion to a designer/design student who focusses on layout and typography. Despite popular belief, only because you can draw well, it doesn’t mean that you’ll be a good designer, and vice versa. There are people who are good at both (like me, if I may say so myself), but it’s not the rule. So yes, that’s a thing.

But now, what if you don’t have someone to take over this part and you need to do it yourself? Or you are a designer but just never worked in print before?

Things I will stress is, get yourself a program specifically for designing layouts.

The most widely known/used one is InDesign from Adobe, the most recent version is available through their Creative Cloud subscription (which is ridiculously expensive but guess who is Booboo the Fool and pays for it because it’s industry standard) - students can get it for 50% off though, if you register with your uni email and stuff. Same goes for faculty members if I remember correctly.

There are also old Adobe Creative Suites available (try looking for CS6, that’s the latest before the CC came into the game), which also include old InDesign versions. Maybe you can get your hand at those. I’m not telling you to pirate software, absolutely not, how could I, ABSOLUTELY *DON’T* LOOK FOR PIRATED ADOBE CREATIVE SUITE 6 for your zine endeavours.

Another, much cheaper, option that also can open idml files from InDesign is Affinity Publisher, part of Affinity’s roster of design and photo software. I tried the demo and I think it works just fine, especially if you are not familiar with InDesign anyway. If you are used to InDesign, though, it needs quite some adjustments because it’s close but different, so get acquainted with the program.

If you have the EX version of Clip Studio Paint, you technically could also make your zine within that software, however, I would only recommend it if you have no text to work with, and to my knowledge you can also not really incorporate a design grid. For purely illustrated zines, though, it can work.

I’m sure there are more softwares out there, but I can’t really say anything about them, how they might work or anything like that. One thing though: for the love of everything that’s dear to you, please DO NOT use Microsoft Word or the OpenOffice/LibreOffice equivalent. They are not supposed to do what you need to do to design an actual quality zine. Here’s a quick checklist that you really should keep in mind while searching for a proper software.

Things your layout software definitely should have:

CMYK and RGB mode (CMYK for printed zines, RGB for digital zines)

the option to add bleed to your pages (printing)

option to export as printable and interactive PDFs

option to see and export your file as spreads and single pages

automatic pagnation options

grids. design grids will be your bread and butter

text fields that you can push around on the page

MASTER PAGES/SPREADS

paragraph styles

option to add more than 2 pages to a spread (printing)

option to change page sizing for a single page (printing)

page borders to avoid cutting away from important features like text

hyperlinks and text/page anchors (digital)

major formatting customisation for text, especially with finetuning for leading and kerning

layers (akin to Photoshop layers, mostly to make your life easier)

Now, this isn’t the be-all, end-all, but this is the very baseline you need to do your zine’s design and layout. In future parts I will deal with each individual discipline like text formatting, images, design base rules and other shenanigans. Those I will cover with the Adobe CC simply because that’s the tools I use on the daily, but I’ll try to keep them as general as I can so you can apply them to your personal choice of software.

The deadline for our very very first issue is this Friday, May 29th. However we aren't expecting many submissions from folks outside the studio for the first one as it will mostly be a tester for printing and promotion. The next will be August 18th! At the moment submissions are rolling, so whenever a piece is sent it will be considered for the next coming issue.

In terms of formatting, as long as it is 300dpi or more .jpg, .png, or .tiff are all fine. For digital art, we do ask that colors are in CMYK for printing. Pages are 5.5inx8.5in with potential for a 8.5in×11in spread, so if your piece fits in there already when it's sent that would be ideal.

Guwahati's City Offset pushes boundaries with Ricoh

Going by its offset printing background, Guwahati's City Offset is just a conventional offset printer in town. However, the company continues to transform itself by investing in new and modern machines to tap fresh market domains. The printer has pushed its digital printing boundaries with the purchase of a new Ricoh Pro C7200x digital color production press from Monotech Systems. Based out of Adabari in Guwahati, City Offset has been a cozy printing corner for customers from different market domains as well as industrial clusters over the last couple of decades.

“Geographically, we are pretty much confined in Guwahati. However, some of our clients come to us from other cities and towns of Assam as well as some neighboring North-Eastern states,” says Mrinal Chatterjee, proprietor, City Offset, adding, “We always attempt to please our customers with complete end-to-end printing solutions using diverse technologies, so is why we have added the Ricoh Pro C7200x.”

The machine portfolio of City Offset consists of a line of mini offset presses, digital multifunction printers, and others. “When it comes to digital printing, we used to run digital production presses from other brands. After we brought home the new Ricoh Pro C7200x, we rely on this press for every digital task. It has been amazing to intensify digital printing to a whole new level,” Chatterjee says. He says the new Ricoh digital press has whole new features to further explore and exploit.

Chatterjee says the advanced features of the press such as the fifth color station is what “we have to further explore for going beyond the basic CMYK printing.” Likewise, this press has many other unconventional features such as productivity, flexibility, speed and print resolution, he says.

Featuring the fifth color station, the Ricoh Pro C7200x can pull off vivid color printing, closely comparable to offset quality. This station is designed for printing neon colors for a high-impact blend with the usual CMYK. “We were impressed with all these outstanding features of the Ricoh digital color production press,” Chatterjee says, adding they hope to get new customers who would surely be amazed by the print outputs and capability of the Ricoh Pro C7200x.

The Ricoh Pro C7200x can produce print detail in industry-leading resolution of 2400×4800 dpi on a broad range of light and heavyweight stocks up to 360 gsm. “We are now capable of improving print quality and speed following the purchase of the Ricoh press from Monotech,” Chatterjee says. The Ricoh Pro C7200x is a high-speed digital color production press, engineered to run at the maximum speed of up to 95 ppm (pages per minute) with an expansive 16,200-sheet maximum paper capacity for longer runs.

Backed by a team of more than 25 printing staff, which include graphic designers, DTP operators, machine men and others, City Offset is fully optimistic to determine what they can offer to their customers on the digital front using the new Ricoh Pro C7200x.
