Have a list of the names of Nyari characters in my little sci-fantasy story. Mostly because I worked really hard on them and need reassurance that they don't sound like utter shit skjfghd because they sound very human right now? Or elvish which hey the Nyari are definitely inspired by "what if elves but carnivorus and in space" so I guess that fits.

Amlýðverr - the emperor, name meaning "divine protector"

Jynyr - the empress, name meaning "unyielding strength"

Dýlaga - the emperor's official mistress and mother of the crown prince, name meaning "mother wolf"

Rúnvarður - the empress' lover, father of the crown princess, and a general; name meaning "oathkeeper"

Lifærnir - a general and royal advisor, name meaning "wise one"

Ránvísir - the spymaster, name meaning "bird speaker"

Cjáldyfr - the crown prince, name meaning "black wolf"

Ljósverra - the crown princess, name meaning "divine ectasy"

Dómráður - the prince's lover and a lord in his own right, naming meaning "judgment of the gods"

Gyðrystir - a royal assassin, also a lover of both Cjáldyfr and Dómráður; name meaning "spiritual strength"

Teyhljómr - the princess's lover, naming meaning "many whispers"

The conlang is obviously based off of a few real languages with Icelandic and Old Norse and Old Germanic languages being at the forefront cause I didn't just want to yoink a modern language still spoken by cultures I don't share ancestry with.

I like the names, and they fit with the original idea I had for the story ("what if you drop a team that's more Star Trek vibes onto a planet that's more LotR and ASoIaF?" to the point there are even tentatively space dragons), but I also want to be sure they don't sound ridiculous?

a bit of context for some of my recent asks about oaths: i've been working on modifying some OCs to be part of a larger team of adventurers, and I had this idea of reworking an Exalted character (a chosen of the moon who is a liberator of the oppressed and terror of tyrants) into a similar concept as that ancient dinosaur warrior I tossed a while back. I thought of making oaths a part of his character and wanted to look up stuff on the Oaths for inspiration, and Ancients seems interesting?

The Ancients is an Oath is a deliberately radiant oath, focusing on the Light in every tenant. Out of all the oaths, it is the most purely altruistic, encouraging it’s keeper to find the goodness in themselves, in others, and defend it all.

Kindle the Light. Through your acts of mercy, kindness, and forgiveness, kindle the light of hope in the world, beating back despair.

Shelter the Light. Where there is good, beauty, love, and laughter in the world, stand against the wickedness that would swallow it. Where life flourishes, stand against the forces that would render it barren.

Preserve Your Own Light. Delight in song and laughter, in beauty and art. If you allow the light to die in your own heart, you can't preserve it in the world.

Be the Light. Be a glorious beacon for all who live in despair. Let the light of your joy and courage shine forth in all your deeds.

The issue, if one can find difficulty with such a thing, is that it’s nebulous beyond being a servant of light, it does not define the dark, or how the light is to be ignited against shadow. It’s one that embraces an altruistic consequentialism, where the end result is more important than the direction one takes to get there.

Or, more importantly, it allows anyone to find a place for themselves as an oathkeeper, be they trained knight, wily urchin, or reformed monster finding a way to harness and grow the light within and without.

i am once again grumpy that. roxas and ventus ended up being separate people. like, i get why it is the way it is. “i am me, nobody else” blah blah. people liked roxas way too much as an independent character for him to be “overwritten” with ventus. i also get that roxas’s story was written before ventus’s. this is just me being an editor and pointing to pieces of a story that has been presented to me and suggesting ways they could be swapped around to improve cohesion and the overall message. this is what i fucking do.

okay so. what would an explanation for roxas-as-ventus look like? pretty simple, really. for kingdom hearts, anyway. sora stabs himself, yeeting out kairi’s heart, his own, a “copy” of himself in the usual form of a nobody, AND ventus’s heart. ventus and the copy wake up in the same body, ventus with amnesia (again) and only able to draw upon the vague memories that would have allowed sora’s nobody to form a consciousness, if it weren’t for ventus’s already formed presence to take command.

and then we have xion. designed to draw out the memories of sora within “roxas” and make them her own. which she does. and as a result, in this situation, xion would be the closest approximation of sora’s “proper” nobody. why is she a girl? uhhhh she’s trans, duh. we fucking been knew. why does she look like kairi to the few people who actually believe in her as a person enough to see her preferred form? that’s the female face most present in sora’s memory.

i want to stress that this alone would change effectively fuck all about kh2 or days. i mean, i personally would let xion unwillingly win that final battle and take roxas’s place as sora’s nobody- and i did literally write that specific AU concept out as a full fic- but really, no changes are necessary until kh3, and even then, not many. hell, the “i am me, nobody else” exchange could still happen, given as ventus-as-roxas would 1. still be entirely correct and 2. already have sora’s memories back at that point.

so what does this accomplish? well, let’s see. in kh appearance is tied strongly to identity, and it’s pretty fucking weird for these two characters to be identical and it to pass with only minor comment. you’d have ventus-as-roxas’s arc mean one thing, and xion’s mean another, whereas now xion’s arc is basically roxas’s again but bass boosted and with a trans flag palette. honestly, just give that set of themes to xion, she does it way better. it’d dramatically increase the ties between the various trios, giving them more reasons to interact and care about each other. ventus would have someone to interact with on his level, who knew him as himself rather than as aqua and terra’s wayward little brother.

the only thing we’d lose in this exchange would be… rule of cool dual-wielding roxas ex machina in kh3. which. is not a great loss. just give ventus oathkeeper the moment he remembers being roxas and have xion get oblivion the moment she remembers herself, and call it a fucking day.

again, i get why this is not what happened, but i maintain that it would notably improve the story had it happened. point is if kh ever gets remade somehow put me on the writing team please i got this shit on lock

job quests and how they went in my canon (very long post that i will return to and update on occassion.)

Warrior

guy that loves the warrior questline more than anyone else she knows: so anyway i rewrote the entire warrior questline

marauder quests are done by Roeh years and years before ARR - she’s in her late teens at the time (1565 6AE to be precise). it’s when she starts dating Solkwyb (though they break up a few years later amicably). Sighard grows older and eventually joins the marauder’s guild himself.

the 30-50 job quests are also done by Roeh, during 1 7UE (five years before the start of ARR). over the course of the questline she grows quite close with Curious Gorge and there’s a lot of back and forth UST... but then the fight where he loses control in the level 50 quest happens, and they both almost kill each other - Roeh’s neck is so badly damaged on her left side that even after healing magic she no longer has full motion of it, and Gorge takes a blow to the chest so forceful the only reason he survived is likely his plate armour. Understandably, this creates a rift between the two and makes the next few years... uncomfortably awkward, to say the least.

the 50-60 job quests take place during ARR, rather than hw, just after Roeh meets Niuwyb for the first time. The quests take place mostly as they do in game, with Niuwyb as a tag along as she learns how to be a Warrior from Roeh, Gorge, and Broken Mountain. At some point during this, Niuwyb meets Skaetswys, Roeh’s girlfriend, who privately takes her aside and is like. Can you do something about those two. make them talk. Roeh is driving me insane the way she talks about him to me and somehow hasn’t got with him yet. Skaetswys and Niuwyb team up to get Roeh and Gorge to Fix Their Shit and after five years of mess they finally get together just before the final quest.

60-70 job quest happens during post-ARR and.... is essentially a funny haha love triangle with the introduction of Dorgono that ends in a triad. Roeh is still way too embarrassed at the prospect of saying “I love you” even at age 31, but Dorgono and Gorge understand she shows it in other ways.

Paladin

Mellow is a longtime friend of Mylla, even if she wasn’t directly involved in the gladiator questline, she’s absolutely heard about it.

The 30-50 job quests in this case are done from an insider’s view - by Mellow, who has been a sultansworn for decades, and with the extra drama of her romantic involvement with Solkzagyl, who she firmly believes would never betray the order. She solves the issue much like in the questline, but is heartbroken when he decides to leave. 

the 50-60 quests take place very early on during Heavensward - Mellow volunteers to find out what Solkzagyl’s investigation has led to on her own, as the Sultansworn are incredibly busy, for the most part, dealing with the aftermath of the bloody banquet. When she finds out that Solkzagyl is seemingly dead, Mellow is nigh inconsolable, but throws herself into training Constaint in his place and continuing the investigation. the quest proceeds as it normally does until she meets a travelling Roeh in Falcon’s Nest, en route to Dravania, who... not only saw Solkzagyl alive, but bedded him - something she regretted rather quickly, and even more so after finding out he was a liar that was already spoken for. She gave Mellow what information she could, along with an offer to get drinks sometime, before heading to her actual destination. She confronts Solkzagyl at the end of the questline, defeats him, takes Oathkeeper, and returns to Ul’dah with Jenlyns, telling Solkzagyl she never wants to see him again.

the 60-70 quests take place after Mellow has left Ul’dah with X’rhun - she receives a missive and returns to help with the situation. Everyone is relieved that she finally seems actually, legitimately happy with her lot, and don’t begrudge her at all for taking off when she did.

Worth noting: Sonje learned the fundamentals of the sword and shield as part of her training as a soldier of the ala mhigan army in her youth, and this was her bread and butter until she received a dark knight stone. Roeh also has minimal knowledge of gladiator style fighting that she learned from her mother (who, unfortunately, really sucks at it.)

Dark Knight

These are done by Niuwyb over the course of heavensward with minimal changes from canon - 30-60 during early heavensward, and 60-70 on the tail end of hw and very early sb.

Worth noting: Sonje is also a dark knight, but received her jobstone and training from a nameless hermit in Coerthas en route to Dravania - they actually followed Sandrine and Sonje to Tailfeather until Sonje’s training was complete, before disappearing without a trace. Sonje swears that the hermit was familiar to her in a way she was never able to place.

Monk

The pugilist questline is done by Roeh at the tender age of 12 years old, as her mother leaves her in the care of quite possibly the worst possible babysitter ever: her old friend Hamon Holyfist. After two weeks of failed adventuring, Wild Juniper returns to Ul’dah to see her child beating up bandits in the middle of the street. she is not pleased.

The monk questline is undertaken by @childofdrought ‘s Kihfo, and you should absolutely ask them lots of questions about it (evil)

extra note: Niuwyb is a monk, but learned this from Lyse during sb over the course of their travels, rather than during the canon questline for it.

Dragoon

The lancer quests were done by Niuwyb during post-ARR quests, fairly early on, and were followed very closely by the dragoon 30-50 quests, which were done just a little bit before Estinien showed up in msq for the first time. yeah it was funny.

50-60 job quests were done very early on in heavensward, and 60-70 was done between 4.0 and 4.1.

White Mage

Conjurer quests are done by Niuwyb late in ARR, after the events of the Chrysalis. Niuwyb specifically returned to Gridania and enrolled as a conjurer despite her lack of talent in magic because she didn’t want to see anyone else she cared for die, and if there was anything she could do to prevent that she would, even if it was difficult for her. Truth be told, she struggled a lot until she received the white mage stone and the guidance of A-Towa-Cant filled in the gaps of her natural abilities.

Worth noting: Sandrine learned a Gelmorran style of conjury during her time living in Gridania, with much less focus on attuning to the elementals.

Scholar

Flaming Orchid’s main job, and very key to her storyline, which is Drought’s domain once again, along with the arcanist quests.

Worth noting: Sandrine was a member of the arcanist’s guild during ARR, purely as something to pass the time until Operation Archon.

Astrologian

Another questline undertaken by Flaming Orchid.

worth noting: Sandrine first undertook astrologian training as part of her studies in New Sharlayan, years and years before msq. It’s still her main job today, although she has never met Leveva nor Jannequinard. Slightly ironic in that she is an Ishgardian that learnt Sharlayan astrology decades before THAT drama.

Machinist

Undertaken by Niuwyb with minimal canon deviation over the course of heavensward. Interesting of note is that her marksmanship improves in leaps and bounds after she receives Hraesvelgr’s eye. Every other time Niuwyb comes through and sees the machinists she ends up having a fling with Rostnsthal, and every time they end up going their separate ways again. It’s almost like a tradition at this point.

Summoner

Another job undertaken by Flaming Orchid. I’m glad Y’mhitra is friends with her sister’s gf

Red Mage

Upon returning to Ul’dah after the paladin 50-60 questline, a despondent Mellow takes her leave of the sultansworn, and is wandering the streets when she encounters someone in need. She may have left the sultansworn, but she is not one to leave someone in need alone, and resolves to help the child. It is then that she meets X’rhun, who invites her to share a drink at Black Brush Station, and then offers to teach her the art of red magic. She takes to the art quite well, and takes to X’rhun even more so...

Kingdom Hearts Final Mix Recap: Hollow Bastion (The Final Keyhole)

Okay so, outside of the worldwide difficulty getting harder, there are a couple of other changes I forgot to mention:

If you wait until AFTER Maleficent's death to defeat Cerberus, she won't show up after Hades' temper tantrum to warn him to be mindful of his own darkness.

If you leave Monstro early and don't come back until AFTER Ansem possesses Riku, Sora will be MUCH more hostile towards "Riku" in the cutscenes, and Riku won't team up with Sora during the first Parasite Cage battle on account of being possessed. Sora will even call out Ansem for pretending to be Riku during their confrontation in Monstro's stomach.

But now back to the story rapidly approaching its climax:

The Warp Hole allows our heroes to completely bypass the Heartless blockade and only have to fight some random stragglers to reach Hollow Bastion, but they still can't get inside the castle, requiring them to start at the rising falls again.

Sora, Donald, and Goofy are immediately greeted by the Beast, who tried his hardest to get to Belle, but in the end the Heartless overwhelmed him and threw him out of the castle, forcing him to fall back to regain his strength.

With Sora, Donald, and Goofy backing him up, however, it is FAR easier to fight past the Heartless that have overrun the castle, and it isn't long before they get back to the library.

There, the Beast and Belle are finally reunited, and it's just as heartwarming as it sounds.

Belle explains that she decided to search the library to try and find if there was anything they could use to stop Ansem, and gives Sora the Divine Rose Keychain. In Final Mix, Oathkeeper is so good that you probably shouldn't even bother equipping this one.

Sorry Belle.

From there, our heroes scale the castle again, but upon reaching the Castle Chapel, they find the remaining five princesses of heart.

They explain that they've been using their light to hold back the flood of darkness that would otherwise drown the worlds, but they can only hold it back for so long.

They also reveal that Ansem was swallowed by the darkness pouring out of the Keyhole shortly after Kairi, Donald, and Goofy left.

But he didn't look scared, enraged, or confused when it happened.

No, he was smiling, grinning from ear to ear.

He's not at Hollow Bastion anymore, but he's still out there, somewhere deeper in the darkness, ready to put the final steps of his plans in motion.

The Grand Hall, being the room closest to the Final Keyhole, is now completely overrun with Heartless. However, you can now climb the machinery containing the Final Keyhole to get some new items, the final dalmatian puppies, and (in a pod opposite to the Keyhole, apparently intended for Kairi) the Oblivion Keychain.

Oblivion's token resembles a black version of the crown on Sora's necklace, and symbolizes his bond with Riku. Where Oathkeeper focuses on magic, Oblivion focuses on physical strength.

With nowhere else to go and no time to waste, our heroes enter the machine to seal the Final Keyhole.

The Final Keyhole is on the bottom portion of the Heartless Emblem, and the space surrounding it is a multicolored miasma.

Unfortunately, Heartless are drawn to the Keyblade, the Realm of Darkness is crawling with Heartless, and the Final Keyhole is a gateway to that realm, and so a Behemoth emerges from the Final Keyhole to try and claim Sora's heart.

It's nowhere near as difficult as the bosses Sora faced on his first visit, even as it lunges around the room to try to crush Sora and can summon bolts of lightning from it's horn. All Sora needs to do is strike the Behemoth's horn with everything he has until it breaks and releases this Heartless' captive heart, and the battle is over.

As soon as the Behemoth is felled, Leon congratulates Sora.

Our heroes step out of the machine to discover that Leon, Aerith, and Yuffie are in the Great Hall. When Sora asks why, Aerith explains that Hollow Bastion is there homeworld.

They talk for a bit longer, and mention that sealing the Darkness and the Heartless that dwell within it away should restore all the worlds that were lost.

Sora is ecstatic, and talks about how he can't wait to come and visit them again once this is all over.

Except there's a catch, restoring the worlds will also restore the barriers between them. Gummi Ships will be useless, and they'll never see each other again.

This... Considerably dampens the good mood everyone was in, until Leon chimes in with the following:

"Even if we never see each other again, our hearts will stay connected."

Yuffie adds that she couldn't forget Sora even if she wanted to, and the heavier subject matter is finally dispelled.

Sora steps back into the machine and seals the Final Keyhole, halting the flood of darkness for now.

However, the Princesses of Heart warn him that they can sense a great darkness nearby, and theorize that Ansem may have gone there.

That darkness will be the site of their final battle, the battle that will decide the fate of all worlds.

To aid Sora in this endeavor, the Princesses combine their power to upgrade Fira into Firaga, and send Sora on his way.

Back in the library, Aerith reveals that she found more of Ansem's report: the second page, the fourth page, and the tenth.

The second page reads as follows:

It is my duty to expose what this darkness really is. I shall conduct the following experiments:

Extract the darkness from a person's heart.

Cultivate darkness in a pure heart.

Both suppress and amplify the darkness within.

The experiments caused the test subjects' hearts to collapse, including those of the most stalwart. How fragile our hearts are! My treatment produced no signs of recovery. I confined those who had completely lost their hearts beneath the castle.

Some time later, I went below and was greeted by the strangest sight. Creatures that seemed born of darkness...

What are they? Are they truly sentient beings? Could they be the shadows of those who lost their hearts in my experiments?

Ansem was already experimenting on his subjects even BEFORE he grew obsessed with darkness.

The fourth page, meanwhile, says this:

The Heartless appear in groups, and are multiplying rapidly. I've provided them both living and nonliving samples. They've responded only to the living. They seem to multiply after absorbing something from the living creatures. Their prey vanishes without a trace.

I believe the Heartless are taking hearts. They are born from those who've lost their hearts, and thrive on hearts seized from others. The hearts taken by the Heartless become Heartless themselves.

Though I lack proof, I am confident in this hypothesis. I must also study their behavioral principles. Though they lack emotions, they do seem to have some intelligence. How to communicate with them?

It's just occurred to me: Could they be the darkness in people's hearts?

And here is the moment where Ansem's obsession set in.

Finally, the tenth reveals quite a bit:

Just as people have hearts, so do worlds. The same can be said of stars in the night sky. And deep within each world lies a door to its heart. The Heartless desire those hearts. Born out of darkness in people's hearts, they seek to return to a greater heart.

Yes that's it. The Heartless come from people's hearts, as does the darkness. Is the core of the world's heart the world of the Heartless? I will pursue the answer there and become all knowing.

My path is set. I shall seek out the wielder of the Keyblade, and the princesses. My body is too frail for such a journey, but I must do this. I will cast it off and plunge into the depths of darkness.

This was written before he found Kairi, implying that he cast off his body and dove into the darkness shortly after sending he adrift, and that he had been hiding out on Destiny Islands to try and locate both the Keyblade's chosen one AND the Keyhole.

And in the end, he got both.

After talking to Aerith two more times, she upgrades Cura to Curaga.

Upon exiting Hollow Bastion, a new Gummi Route that leads right to the source of this darkness becomes available.

Also, there's a new tournament at Olympus Coliseum: The Hades Cup!

...

Oh... That's right...

There's one member of Maleficent's conspiracy our heroes never dealt with...

For the remaining 39, I will be posting a series of preliminary rounds.
