Tetris (2023) Review
Tumblr media
Not going to lie, but using “The Final Countdown” as a song for your movie trailer immediately means the marketing team from Apple TV+ deserve a raise! That song slaps!!
Plot: Henk Rogers discovers Tetris in 1988, and then risks everything by travelling to the Soviet Union, where he joins forces with inventor Alexey Pajitnov to bring the game to the masses.
You hear a movie titled Tetris is coming out and one has to wonder if we have another Emoji Movie on our hands, where we’ll get little tetra shaped characters goofing about in some animated mathematics world trying to force an unfunny joke upon our poor heads. Then we get a random celebrity cameo like Orlando Bloom voicing an L-tetromino and making a joke that his character’s full name is Legolas. Actually, wouldn’t mind seeing that last part, just saying. Regardless, Tetris isn’t actually some ridiculous animated affair based on a pop culture phenomenon, but instead is the backstory for how the game was brought to the world masses. So no talking tetrominos, but instead we have ourselves a legal drama.
Look, before you all shut your eyes away upon the news of another legal drama, this movie is actually surprisingly engaging and the story of the battle for the licence of worldwide distribution of this little game is filled with twists and turns, as well as an element of spy espionage, due to the original game owners being Soviet Russia. That’s right, there’s an element of the Cold War in these proceedings, with Henk Rogers and others trying to persuade the Russians to sell them the rights, however as known the Russians don’t trust anyone. Speaking of the Russians, the communist backdrop is handled really well, with this idea that when in Moscow you’re always being watched, as well as digging into the corruption of the Soviet regime. Even Gorbachev shows up at one point, thought that element I imagine didn’t happen in real life and was more so added to up the ante of this film.
Speaking of upping the ante, even though many scenes revolve around characters sitting in rooms discussing legal stuff, the movie also involves car chases. That’s right, the writers definitely added a bit of a fictitious element to this story to make it more exciting for the casual viewer. I enjoyed that. It made this movie stand out more from others of its genre, and of the said car chase as well as other sequences, there are visual moments where the screen turns into this very early shonky computer graphic pixelated look, which I found to be quite the clever little gimmick. This backed up with an 80s techno soundtrack as well as various renditions on the classic Tetris theme made for an overall exciting watch.
Taron Egerton as always is super likeable and charming as Henk Rogers, in some ways channelling a young Gary Oldman, although maybe its just the Jim Gordon stache. The character of Rogers himself is the typical underdog one loves to root for. He’s the reckless entrepreneur who bets his entire house and life on this one game that he believes has the power to become something massive. He’s described by one of the other characters as “stupid but honest”, as Egerton leans into that heavily. His friendship bond he builds with the Tetris game creator Alexey Pajitnov (played by Russian actor Nikita Efremov in a very endearing way) is also really delightful, and a scene where the two of them go to a Soviet nightclub is a highlight. Roger Allam and Igor Grabuzov relish their villainous roles, and Toby Jones pops in doing some kind of European accent, though hard to pinpoint exactly which one.
Overall I really enjoyed Tetris, and was surprised at how the creative team managed to make this story as engaging as it is. Also naturally there is an element of nostalgia, as like many back in the day as a kid I used to enjoy rinsing Tetris. I even had a little handheld console that was designed specifically for Tetris. It wasn’t the branded stuff like the GameBoy (though I had that too for Zelda and such); it was literally this little Tetris console my dad got me in Russia, and that was the beginning of my screen addiction, which later turned into my smartphone....dark times. Regardless, a solid watch and currently my favourite film so far this year, though that’s not a difficult feat seeing as thus far this year’s movie releases have been really average. I look forward to the inevitable Rock, Paper, Scissors movie!
Overall score: 7/10

Bobby ended up being first in the lineup!! I have a few headcanons regarding how the team works in the Grid
First, since programs generally can't change their circuit color, the uniforms are a specific circuit pattern for each team, instead of having team colors. There will probably be a simple insignia they can each display, like how the tetromino in the circle became the Tron Lives symbol.
Bobby is a pretty young program, like the rest of his disc wars team. He's from Tron City originally, and he either is an ISO or is very close to a few of them. He takes an interest in how their expression differs from BASICs. He's probably originally programmed for art, but he really admires Tron and he's attended a lot of Games. He's reaching outside of his programming to become a disc fighter.
If this ends up being an au I will probably sideline the Occupation
Edit: I forgot to say it but thank you so much too @mewtwowarrior for the idea of disc wars teams!!!

With inspiration from “Tetris,” MIT researchers develop a better radiation detector

With inspiration from “Tetris,” MIT researchers develop a better radiation detector
Tumblr media
The spread of radioactive isotopes from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan in 2011 and the ongoing threat of a possible release of radiation from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear complex in the Ukrainian war zone have underscored the need for effective and reliable ways of detecting and monitoring radioactive isotopes. Less dramatically, everyday operations of nuclear reactors, mining and processing of uranium into fuel rods, and the disposal of spent nuclear fuel also require monitoring of radioisotope release.
Now, researchers at MIT and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) have come up with a computational basis for designing very simple, streamlined versions of sensor setups that can pinpoint the direction of a distributed source of radiation. They also demonstrated that by moving that sensor around to get multiple readings, they can pinpoint the physical location of the source. The inspiration for their clever innovation came from a surprising source: the popular computer game “Tetris.”
The team’s findings, which could likely be generalized to detectors for other kinds of radiation, are described in a paper published in Nature Communications, by MIT professors Mingda Li, Lin-Wen Hu, Benoit Forget, and Gordon Kohse; graduate students Ryotaro Okabe and Shangjie Xue; research scientist Jayson Vavrek SM ’16, PhD ’19 at LBNL; and a number of others at MIT and Lawrence Berkeley.
Radiation is usually detected using semiconductor materials, such as cadmium zinc telluride, that produce an electrical response when struck by high-energy radiation such as gamma rays. But because radiation penetrates so readily through matter, it’s difficult to determine the direction that signal came from with simple counting. Geiger counters, for example, simply provide a click sound when receiving radiation, without resolving the energy or type, so finding a source requires moving around to try to find the maximum sound, similarly to how handheld metal detectors work. The process requires the user to move closer to the source of radiation, which can add risk.
To provide directional information from a stationary device without getting too close, researchers use an array of detector grids along with another grid called a mask, which imprints a pattern on the array that differs depending on the direction of the source. An algorithm interprets the different timings and intensities of signals received by each separate detector or pixel. This often leads to a complex design of detectors.
Typical detector arrays for sensing the direction of radiation sources are large and expensive and include at least 100 pixels in a 10 by 10 array. However, the group found that using as few as four pixels arranged in the tetromino shapes of the figures in the “Tetris” game can come close to matching the accuracy of the large, expensive systems. The key is proper computerized reconstruction of the angles of arrival of the rays, based on the times each sensor detects the signal and the relative intensity each one detects, as reconstructed through an AI-guided study of simulated systems.
Of the different configurations of four pixels the researchers tried — square, or S-, J- or T-shaped — they found through repeated experiments that the most precise results were provided by the S-shaped array. This array gave directional readings that were accurate to within about 1 degree, but all three of the irregular shapes performed better than the square. This approach, Li says, “was literally inspired by ‘Tetris.’”
Key to making the system work is placing an insulating material such as a lead sheet between the pixels to increase the contrast between radiation readings coming into the detector from different directions. The lead between the pixels in these simplified arrays serves the same function as the more elaborate shadow masks used in the larger-array systems. Less symmetrical arrangements, the team found, provide more useful information from a small array, explains Okabe, who is the lead author of the work.
“The merit of using a small detector is in terms of engineering costs,” he says. Not only are the individual detector elements expensive, typically made of cadmium-zinc-telluride, or CZT, but all of the interconnections carrying information from those pixels also become much more complex. “The smaller and simpler the detector is, the better it is in terms of applications,” adds Li.
While there have been other versions of simplified arrays for radiation detection, many are only effective if the radiation is coming from a single localized source. They can be confused by multiple sources or those that are spread out in space, while the “Tetris”-based version can handle these situations well, adds Xue, co-lead author of the work.
In a single-blind field test at the Berkeley Lab with a real cesium radiation source, led by Vavrek, where the researchers at MIT did not know the ground-truth source location, a test device was performed with high accuracy in finding the direction and distance to the source.
“Radiation mapping is of utmost importance to the nuclear industry, as it can help rapidly locate sources of radiation and keep everyone safe,” says co-author Forget, an MIT professor of nuclear engineering and head of the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering.
Vavrek, another co-lead-author, says that while in their study they focused on gamma-ray sources, he believes the computational tools they developed to extract directional information from the limited number of pixels are “much, much more general.” It isn’t restricted to certain wavelengths, it can also be used for neutrons, or even other forms of light, ultraviolet light, adds Hu, a senior scientist at MIT Nuclear Reactor Lab.
Nick Mann, a scientist with the Defense Systems branch at the Idaho National Laboratory, says, “This work is critical to the U.S. response community and the ever-increasing threat of a radiological incident or accident.”
Additional research team members include Ryan Pavlovsky, Victor Negut, Brian Quiter, and Joshua Cates at Lawrence Berkely National Laboratory, and Jiankai Yu, Tongtong Liu, Stephanie Jegelka at MIT. The work was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy.

In Zelda there is a theory called the tetraforce theory.
The triforce is made up of three yellow triangles. The three triangles represent wisdom, power, and courage. The Hylian Shield in Ocarina of Time, however, has a fourth triangle below the triforce symbol. THe shield is illustrated above. It was hypothesized that this fourth triangle was the fourth force in the triforce. We see, thereby, the quaternity principal at play. The three is becoming four, or at least there is a different fourth component that does not seem to belong.
The number four is significant in Zelda. The prominence of the number four in Zelda leads “tetraforce conspirators” to believe that there is a fourth part of the triforce.

The term "4X" originates from a 1993 preview of Master of Orion in Computer Gaming World by Alan Emrich, in which he rated the game "XXXX" as a pun on the XXX rating for pornography. The four Xs were an abbreviation for "EXplore, EXpand, EXploit and EXterminate".[1]
Explore means players send scouts across a map to reveal surrounding territories.
Exploit means players gather and use resources in areas they control, and improve the efficiency of that usage.
Expand means players claim new territory by creating new settlements, or sometimes by extending the influence of existing settlements.
Exterminate means attacking and eliminating rival players. Since in some games all territory is eventually claimed, eliminating a rival's presence may be the only way to achieve further expansion.

The best VR games to get lost in another world
The best VR games are the kind of titles that you won't mind strapping yourself into and disappearing from the world for a few hours. These are experiences and games that'll make you glad you invested in virtual reality, whether you're rocking a PSVR, Oculus, or Vive headset. Virtual reality gaming has really come into its own in the last few years, as developers have begun to focus entire teams on creating full-fat games set in virtual worlds. It's a far cry from short-lived VR experiences or more gimmicky sandbox takes, and with titles like Half-Life: Alyx proving AAA devs are willing to take the plunge, the future looks bright. VR fans can now enjoy a host of games on different platforms, some of which rival the best console games with engaging stories, emotional beats, and tense combat that tap into the potential of the VR device. It's not enough for a game to be VR compatible, now it's got to feel like the game is meant to be played in VR. With the latest EA Play announcement confirming the space battle sim Star Wars Squadrons will be fully playable in VR, it looks like the gaming community has fully embraced the power of virtual reality. Half-Life: Alyx Available on: Oculus Rift, Rift S, Quest (via Link cable), HTC Vive, Cosmos, Valve Index Right off the bat, we need to bring up arguably the best VR experience available today: Half-Life: Alyx. Released this March, the VR-exclusive Half-Life: Alyx takes place five years before the events of Half-Life 2 and has you play as ally to Gordon Freeman and Eli Vance's daughter, Alyx. Alyx might be the most high-profile triple-A game to be released exclusively on VR platforms, and playing it is proof that having that singular development focus pays off. With smart mechanic innovations and an immaculately detailed world to interact with, Half-Life: Alyx is a more-than-worthy follow-up to Half-Life 2, even if it's not exactly the Half-Life 3 we're all still waiting for. Tetris Effect Available on: PSVR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive (via Epic Games Store) Tetsuya Mizuguchi is a mastermind. The man understands synesthesia, and the potential of music to create resonant emotion. That’s why Tetris Effect is such a holistic experience of mind, body and soul that should be one of the first games you run to once you pick up a VR headset. Those who think that this is another Tetris game will be sorely mistaken when their goggles are steaming up with tears. As well as a robust number of typical Tetris game modes, the star of the show is Journey Mode, a campaign that explores various elements of human history, tied together through song and (sometimes) verse. Every twist of the tetromino is a musical note, with each line clear being an endorphin burst. You are the instrument in Tetris Effect, and it’s one of those games that really benefits from the enclosed nature of VR. Turn the lights down, stick some good headphones on, and clear lines like it’s nobody's business. You won’t regret it! Superhot VR Available on: PSVR, Valve Index, HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift Given that Superhot is one of the most revolutionary indie smash hits of recent years, it makes sense that when the action was grafted into VR, the experience was only elevated. Superhot VR doesn’t take the easy route of porting the same story and missions into the virtual realm, it actually moulds an engaging new tale whilst keeping the same genius gimmick the PC game is known for. In Superhot, time moves when you do, which is perfect if you want to feel like Neo or Max Payne, ducking and weaving bullets like a boxer. A surprisingly effective exercise session as well as a video game, Superhot VR is frantic, haptic and most importantly great fun as you thrash around in your living room, take careful shots at your enemies and punch and disarm from all angles when you’re surrounded. Batman: Arkham VR Available on: PSVR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Valve Index Rocksteady’s Batman Arkham series is widely regarded as one of the finest storytelling feats in games over the past ten year

The Weird and Wonderful Worlds of Columns II and Ichidant-R
Arcade games always have a special allure to them. Lots of experimentation, lots of new ideas and ways to eat quarters, and also lots of difficulty bringing those games perfectly to the home console market. In a previous review, we took a look at SEGA AGES versions of Space Harrier and Puyo Puyo, which attempted to bring the arcade magic of those games to the Switch, taking advantage of the fact that modern hardware has allowed games to recreate their arcade perfect selves.
For many of the SEGA AGES titles, the focus has been on classic, well known titles, like Sonic the Hedgehog, Outrun, Phantasy Star, Alex Kidd and other famous SEGA franchises have already had their time in the limelight. But what about lesser known, weirder titles? Thanks to our friends at SEGA, we were given a chance to check out two titles that fit that bill: Columns II: The Voyage Through Time, and Ichidant-R, and boy were we surprised by these two!
Columns II is perhaps the simpler of the two to talk about: the sequel to the original puzzler Columns, Columns II is a game that’s eluded home release for a while, having been an arcade only release for much of its life except for a port to the SEGA Saturn; interestingly enough, its sequel, Columns III would see release on the Genesis, which explains why many SEGA Genesis compilations tend to skip from Columns I to III. And, frankly, that’s a bit of a shame! Columns has always been a somewhat unique puzzle game, as much of its action runs counter to what players familiar with Tetris or Puyo Puyo might expect: while combinations can be made horizontally and vertically, Columns really shines from careful consideration of diagonal plays to clear boards and create combos.
Columns II: The Voyage Through Time features two distinct modes of play: Flash Columns, and Vs Columns. Flash Columns takes players on a journey through time (hence the name) where they are tasked with completing 70 frankly punishing stages. The name “Flash Columns” refers to the fact that players are presented with a board that is already partially filled with gems (or other weird objects, like fossils or futuristic orbs; remember, time travel) that includes numerous flashing gem/fossil/things. The only way to clear a stage is to burrow down into the level and clear those flashing gems, a task that becomes increasingly difficult as the speed of the game picks up, and your own poorly laid out plans create unwanted consequences as you become your own worst enemy.
Along the way, players will run into Skulls, which appear in the board and act as a roadblock: clear them, and the entire board will be ratcheted up, meaning you have less space to work with! Flash Columns left me with what I can only describe as two distinct feelings: that I just didn't get Columns, or that I was so hyper aware of Columns that I knew the moment I had lost a board from a single set of 3 gems being placed. It was a weird feeling, to say the least, to oscillate between knowing the game is hard, to knowing the game well enough to realize I had already lost 30 seconds into a level. Thankfully, with unlimited continues and save states, this allowed me to play through the entire 70 stages of Columns II and feel a sense of accomplishment that, in an arcade, would likely have been physically impossible or extremely expensive.
Columns II runs so counter to the way most other puzzle games play (the focus on the diagonal being key to playing the game) that at times I found myself getting in my own way, trying to stack vertical or horizontal matches of icons, only for the board state to either remain exactly the same as it was, or in some cases, be even worse than it was before I cleared things. There aren’t many options to rotate or “drop” pieces either, which means that 3 stack high block is going somewhere, and you need to find the absolute best order and position for it to drop before you end up replaying that level all over again. Some stages would feel like a breeze, and others would be a grueling 30 minute long battle.
In the end, I was surprised at how I grew to actually like Columns II unique gameplay and challenge, where I initially came in comparing it only to other puzzle games, and despairing when the "wrong" 3 sets of jewels dropped. My reward for clearing all of these stages were the “Jewel Case”, a cute bonus added for SEGA AGES that features various “Jewels” of SEGA’s gaming collection, such as Nei from Phantasy Star II, and running through some frankly obscure SEGA characters and games to round out the overall collection. Having some goal or achievement to work towards, even if it was just an image of a cute SEGA character, really did help make me want to play more of Columns II, where I likely would have otherwise just played it till I got my fill and maybe picked it up occasionally afterwards.
In fact, compared to the SEGA AGES Puyo Puyo version, Columns II feels like a more robust package. Versus mode in Columns II allows 2 players to face off head to head in a format that plays like the original Columns, with each player building their board over time and trying to defeat the other (or simply outlast them) by creating cascading combos and chains. You can also take the game online and challenge other people to face you in Columns, although I must admit the overall community for such a game feels fairly small. Still, it is a nice addition to the game that gives it some extra life. There is also an included version of the original Columns as well, which gives you the option to play “regular” columns if Flash Columns is too difficult or tiring, and also gives you the ability to turn on “Skull Smash” which lets you play Flash Columns without the dreaded Skulls appearing. All of these really do create a nice package that spruces up a unique and absent part of the Columns family of games, and will really test your puzzle mettle, especially if, like me, you’re too used to those lovable tetrominos!
While Columns II was fun, the real gem in the rough of this duo of releases is Puzzle and Action: Ichidant-R. Ichidant-R is the sequel to Puzzle & Action: Tant-R, itself a spin-off of Bonanza Bros. The Bonanza Bros. heroes, Robo and Mobo, shed their original jobs to become detectives (Tant-R), Medieval knights (Ichidant-R), and reprising their roles as detectives in the final game, Treasure Hunt for the SEGA Saturn.
While that interesting tidbit of lore isn’t required, I was personally amazed to learn that Bonanza Bros. spawned such a unique trilogy of games in their own right, and Ichidant-R is perhaps the first SEGA AGES game that I’ve felt greatful to experience because of how unique the title is. Ostensibly, it’s a collection of minigame puzzles that players select from randomly; in some cases it wouldn’t be wrong to say the Puzzle & Action games feel like very early inspirations for Wario Ware titles. These games range from memory puzzles to mazes and almost everything in between, with a somewhat shocking amount of variety given the age of the game.
While Ichidant-R is a very interesting and fun game, there are a few minigames that just aren’t very fun. The pencil sharpening game feels like an absolute nightmare on the analog sticks of the Joy-Con controller, and while the Pro controller is a bit better, this certainly feels like a game that didn’t age well after the removal of the arcade stick it expects you to be using. Other times games can just get ridiculously difficult; one of Ichidant-R’s biggest features is the oppressive time limit you have to complete a round of the minigame you’re on, and sometimes a single error can spell doom for an entire attempt at the game.
This is fine, since we have unlimited continues, and one nice feature is that when you continue from a game over, the game seems to recognize this and tones down the difficulty a bit before ramping it back up. Still, there are some games I definitely don’t want to play again, and some that I found fun enough to keep me going or replaying the game. Two players can play, as well, making it a bit of a challenge to see who will complete their games faster and essentially team up to take on the challenges the game presents you wish.
However, Ichidant-R’s true magic shines in the extras included in this SEGA AGES release. SEGA really went all out for the first official Western release of Ichidant-R, presenting players with the option to try out the Mega Drive version of the game. The biggest differences here is a “Quest” mode that is almost like a miniature RPG coupled with minigames, where players roam around an overworld map, fight off enemies (who challenge them to minigames), and collect the Philosopher Stones in order to save the kingdom.
Unfortunately, the entire Mega Drive version is in Japanese, and given the amount of text in the game this is understandably something probably not worth the investment in to translate. To mitigate this factor, SEGA’s manual for the game (available online here) includes a full walkthrough to help you experience the unique Quest mode, and also has the explanation for the 2-4 player Mega Drive only Competition mode, where players compete against one another to try and reach the boss first and be the one to bring them down! The Mega Drive mode offered in this version is worth the price of admission alone, letting players explore a game that would have never likely seen the light of day in the West in any other circumstance.
In our previous review of SEGA AGES titles, we mentioned that sometimes these versions of the games introduce new, arcade perfect versions of games with some updates, like Space Harrier, and others present a somewhat flat experience of the game as it was, like Puyo Puyo. In these two titles, Columns II and Ichidant-R, SEGA AGES really shines for the showcase of games it was meant to be. Not only do players get to experience arcade perfect ports of these two previously forgotten and unpublished games, they also get a bevvy of extras, with Ichidant-R’s Mega Drive mode really taking the cake. If this is the kind of quality that gamers can expect from SEGA AGES releases, they have a lot to look forward to as the line continues to grow; for now, do yourself a favor and pick up both of these if you love puzzle games, or simply like experiencing unique games that you can’t get anywhere else!
REVIEW ROUNDUP
+ Arcade perfect ports of Columns II and Ichidant-R.
+ Lots of extras; Mega Drive Mode in Ichidant-R is worth the purchase alone.
+ Both games look and sound great, and controls are generally spot on.
+/- Some of the minigames in Ichidant-R aren’t so great, and difficulty can be uneven.
- Tetris brain will really ruin you when trying to master Columns II. Go for the diagonals!

Tetris Effect Review
Most millennials are no doubt acquainted with the pea-soup green version of Tetris that graced Game Boy handhelds way back when. However, Enhance and The Tetris Company, Inc. are bringing this block-busting classic to a new generation with Tetris Effect. The objective may still be the same, but can it stand out in this day and age?
Tetris Effect Review
Tetris has gotten countless releases since its debut in 1989, and the basic rules still apply here. Different-shaped blocks (called Tetrominoes) endlessly drop from the sky, and it is up to players to make Lines to clear them from play. Survive as long as you can, build up a high score, and try not to succumb to the titular Tetris Effect when you close your eyes for bed.
A few quality of life tweaks have been added to keep things going smoothly. Players can swap out the most recent block with the Hold Queue, the speed of play can be adjusted with both Soft and Hard Drops, and a T-Spin allows players to move blocks around just right.Diehard Tetris fans have no doubt seen this additions before, but their inclusion here works wonders when diving into high level play.
Tetris Effect has one new wrinkle though with the introduction of its Zone Meter. After filling it up, all blocks come to a still, allowing players to carefully plan out their movements. As the clock slowly runs out, players can then move all of their completed lines to the bottom of the playfield for added movements. This is certainly a helpful mechanic, but it is not as much of a game changer as one would expect. Nevertheless, if it’s not broke, there’s no point in fixing it.
Of course, the biggest draw to Tetris Effect is its visual presentation. Those looking to get a firsthand look can dive right into the Journey Mode, a campaign mode for the title that lets players “explore from the outer reaches of the galaxy to the depths of your soul.” While the actual mode fails to reach these profound heights, clearing a set amount of lines and experiencing different skins does keep things fresh. The objective is the same throughout, with only the speed changing between certain areas.
So the million dollar question is: How is its presentation? There’s no denying that this is an audiovisual wonder – the dynamic nature of each environment means your actions control its world. Watching a desert turn into a moon landscape or listening to the rushed chants of an evening luau makes for a stellar experience, and the music and sound effects pair well with the action. There are some sour notes though – stock sound effects, cheesy lyrics, and some bland backgrounds do take away from the overall package. Nevertheless, there are mostly wins among its lot.
Just be warned that these graphics can sometimes make it difficult to play. We were able to make it through most of the game just fine, but the final stage of Journey Mode in particular overdid it with the pizazz, hiding the gameplay behind flashy mermaids and other special effects. Some sort of filter, or even moderation, would have gone a long way.
Though the Journey Mode is a bit on the short side, players will be plenty busy with its Effect Mode. After choosing an Avatar and saying where they are located, players will be able to jump into Marathon, Ultra, Sprint, Master, Chill Marathon, Quick Play, All Clear, Combo, Target, Countdown, and a number of Playlists. There is a distinct lack of multiplayer options, but those flying solo will enjoy going through this suite of modes.
Tetris Effect is an absolute beauty, but the gameplay powering this audiovisual phenomenon is still the same old Tetris. Players won’t be starved for options, but those hoping for something game-changing like Tetris 99 or Tetris: The Grand Master will feel somewhat empty.

Fri, Aug 17th: Let the Games Begin
So after the fair I went back to my dorm. I was pretty excited I was able to land a job in like three minutes. The next event on my schedule was the residential cup. I figured I wanted to look slightly weird but not too weird, so I put on my rubber duck earring and relaxed before the event.
All of IRC went down into the lounge. We were all wearing the shirts marked with our residential hall’s flag and walked down to the area in front of Tommy Trojan along with the other residential halls. All of the marching band, cheerleaders, and the spirit team who were not freshman and knew the songs came down to perform for us and pump us up for this years football season.
The band was fun to watch as they played songs like “All I Do is Win” and “California Love.” It was pretty much breathtaking how well they had those songs translated to marching band instruments from pop songs. The best part was that the person who was the hype man was this older man (60-70s) who had a voice like a ten year old chainsmoker. All the emotions were there, and he was excited and talking about how we were going to go 13 and O, but then he also had some weird fluctuations and roughness in his voice as if it had given up long ago. I joked with a few of my friends how I wanted him to be the man who narrates my life.
After that all of the residential hall’s went to the some sort of sports stadium I don’t remember the name of. I just remember all the students passed through a metal detector and that all of the freshman ended up holding traffic up for a solid two minutes as we crossed the rode. When we got in we were given some balloon noise maker things (two balloons and a straw to blow them both up). They were the shape of the I tetrominoes. There was a bunch of music orchestrated by the same DJ as the BBQ. DJ Mal-Ski is pretty good to be completely honest with you. He has some kick ass music and seems to love his job. After awhile the music died down and it was time to pick the freshman to represent each residential hall. The RA’s needed to select seven people, but they accidentally picked eight, so we had to decide who went back the old fashioned way. Through a game of nose-toes (basically you need to not be  the last one to touch your nose and the game happens spontaneously without warning other than one person saying “nose-toes”). Sadly, Scrunchie was the slowest and ended up having to go back, but he was cool about it. My friend Boaty McBoatface, who I met at the barbecue and is a hella good dancer, was there though and up for whatever challenge lay ahead.
So, with all of our representatives selected, it was time for us to hear the challenge. It was a relay race of sorts, with each of us doing a different challenge that was in the style of the 2000’s game show “Minute To Win It.” There were seven challenges, one for each of the representatives to do. Challenge one was blowing cups off of a table by inflating a balloon and using only its force to move the cups. Challenge two was to move fifteen M&M’s from one plate to another via straw. Challenge three was to get an oreo from your forehead to your mouth, this was my calling :3. Challenge four was stacking 15 cups and then destacking them. Challenge five was popping all the balloons in a black bag, and challenge six and seven was just quickly retrieving puzzle pieces and bringing them back to your team so that they could try to remake their housing building’s symbol.
The first challenge went alright, we were roughly third to complete it. The second challenge Boaty was able to pull us really far ahead as he demolished that M&M challenge. My challenge was pretty interesting. First try, the oreo made it to the side of my nose, but I was missing that finess to get it to my lips. Second try, I tried something similar, but it fell onto the floor. I was going to use that one (as I was dedicated to win this), but the person validating my task completion quickly gave me another oreo. This oreo was the oreo to make it. I placed it on my head and quickly got it to the side of my nose. I can’t touch my tongue to my nose, so I was awkwardly flicking my tongue at it while twisting my head slightly to the side so the oreo would stay balance. I was slowly able to wiggle it towards the end of my nose and in one foul swoop I caught it in my mouth and immediately ran back. My team was counting on me and I just gave us another lead. I was too excited about how fast I ate the cookie (30 seconds?) that I didn’t pay attention to the rest until we got the puzzle. Apparently we maintained our lead, but the puzzle for us is a lot more challenging than for the other residential halls as our symbol is so symmetrical. Another thing that did not help was that everyone was trying to help, but when you have too many people working in a small space that can be detrimental. Eventually we got it, and we ended up placing third overall
Because it looked like we got second, we were told to go onto the floor while they calculated the results. There was a lot of dancing. A loooooottttt of dancing. People were going pretty wild, but it was really fun. Then, after awhile and again before we were told about which house scored what, the rapper Common gave us an inspirational speech.
The speech, which had a nice message, was not well executed. It turns out Common had his hopes high numerous times and his expectations shot down. But he always had encouragement from other people and that helped him achieve his goals. “Find something you’d die for, and live for it.” If I am being completely honest though, he was not the most skilled speaker. People became bored as we sat on the uncomfortable floor for twenty minutes listening to this rapper half of us had not heard of and that was slowly losing our attention. He started strong with a freestyle, but then we all were just losing our attention as he grasped at odd anecdotes such as his alcoholic uncle who encouraged him and his teacher that told him he was better than he thought.
We eventually were all dismissed after all the rankings came out. Then we clogged traffic for another solid two minutes. I decided to head back because I was hella tired from all of that stuff. I needed to relax. One of the group chats on my phone asked “Anyone wanna play cards?” and I headed towards the fourth floor lounge of my dorm to try and play cards with a few people. This was my first time in the fourth floor lounge and it was like a castle! It is a beautiful place and if you are ever in IRC I suggest it for studying. The chairs are comfortable, the fireplace is relaxing, and the windows are huge. I met with a girl that we’ll call Novocaine. She is fairly cute with eyes so dark you could just stare into them for hours. No one really ever came to join us so we just awkwardly talked for awhile and eventually her family called her. They were in town for a few days staying with friends after they dropped her off at college. It’s cute, the bond she has with them. Novocaine grew up near my, and had moved all this way. But, things haven’t really picked up. The most intimate interaction was playing Uno the next day (this time with other friends) and we ended up giving each other all of the draw 2 cards and everyone there was just talking about random stuff. My suitemate who had finally shown up, Mario, joined myself, Elton John, and Novocaine for that. I’d gladly play uno with them again. Maybe some other time.
Oh! And to finish the night, when I got back to my room there were ten stoners. Singing the ballad of their kind. Some Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond, some rap music, and they were just all laughing about the stupidest shit. It was entertaining to watch.
