c!Technoblade- a What If take on his backstory.

Technoblade, for many, both as a cc! and a character has always been enigmatic and someone we are drawn to. In contrast to this, many people fail to understand fundamental parts of his character as well as his motives.

I feel, personally, the reason many people do not fully understand him is because we do not have a solid backstory for him. It is common knowledge that the Antarctic Empire was canon, that he and Phil are old immortals with a long history, but what about before? What came before his days as a conqueror, his days as an emperor, and, of course, his days as an anarchist? When did he become associated with the Blood God? Surely one could not be born with a connection such as that. Unless... No, aus are for another day- this is about headcanon, not aus! (I'll talk about Blood Demigod Techno another day, promise /j)

I remember reading a post by @becauseplot that questioned what made c!Philza and c!Techno go from being emperors, kings, conquerors with power beyond our imagination, to anarchists. The points in that post were incredibly well thought out and I thought about it for quite a long time, scoured Techno's dynamics and even went back to watch a few EarthSMP episodes to get a better view on Emerald Duo as a whole. The notion that they fell so far from that had always been shocking to me, someone who favored them as characters, but hadn't been around to see the Earth SMP.

Now? It's not so hard to believe.

Sometimes, when I think about this post, I also think of Passerine.

Yes, the fic- but what occurs in this fic? Philza and Techno, as they had on SMPE, were at one time co-leading an empire. One thing that I often associate with Philza is that with such a long life, with no death in sight, he often loses track of time- any mortal love hes had is a mere blip in his timeline and his children aren't any different. One day, the Angel of Death vanishes from their kingdom, and never returns. Technoblade is left to himself, stumbling in this similar feeling of Philza being gone as suddenly as he arrived. What if something of this volume had occurred? Or, perhaps, even something worse. Betrayal? Bloody wars bringing loss of people important to him?

Whatever ended the Antarctic Empire is up to interpretation. I'm not especially interested on touching that- I have my personal headcanons about that, but it's really what comes before and after SMPE that really counts. There's unaccounted time in both periods, depending on how long the time between SMPE and DSMP is. (Keep in mind, SMPE isn't considered canon to a lot of character's stories- but it IS canon for Philza and Techno. This is IMPORTANT and I will die on this hill.)

Let's start from the beginning of my headcanon for c!Techno.

He is old- as immortals are- old enough to have seen a world that was calm, peaceful, before governments. As a child, or a teen, or whatever he happened to be- in his early years, Techno got the grand privilege of enjoying a world with little conflict, full of cooperation and kindness. Over time, though, of course, human error comes into play. There are no perfect people, and so, anarchy in its purest form becomes chaos.

(The factual definition of anarchy: the organization of society on the basis of voluntary cooperation, without political institutions or hierarchical government; anarchism.

NOWHERE does this say that anarchism is about chaos. C!Techno's goal isn't chaos, it isn't to kill everyone on the server, it is to BRING COOPERATION WITHOUT CONTROL. His ideals are based upon the factual definition of anarchy, as are Phil's. In their eyes, the things that they did in Man vs. Pog, Doomsday, etc- they're just forms of revolution. They're not revolting to create their own government like the L'Manbergians. They're revolting to abolish them.)

Lighthearted anarchy is the optimal condition for humanity. But, human error naturally creates people who desire control, and all it likely took was one person for things to begin to snowball. Conflict sparks, the world begins to tear apart- his strength, the fact that something is different about him (his immortality, given later, will set him even further apart), it makes him someone the people of this old and fresh out of the schism world want on their side. They want him as a weapon. And, so, the Blade is born, figuratively. As time goes on, government solidifies, this condition of desiring control, power, death, blood- whatever it happens to be- it spreads, becomes commonplace. Techno is pulled along for the entire ride, his views, as everyone else's were, becoming warped as he is compelled to fight and conform to the more popularly accepted norms.

With that out of the way, let's talk about the Blood God.

Technoblade fights, he fights for everyone, a weapon of human error's creation, a solider (a true conqueror) that only continues to douse his hands, his blade, his arrows in blood as he moves forward, becoming a figure so haunted by death that voices of those he'd bloodied begin to fight for his attention within the confines of his brain.

Such a daunting man, hoglin, pigman- whatever your personal headcanon of Techno and his species happen to be- would not escape the notice of the Gods, and especially not one so engraved with war. The Blood God, reaching down from wherever the gods happen to be at, has to meet this conqueror that has been bathed in his favorite substance.

At first, as anyone would be, Technoblade, still young in his long, endless life, was unnerved, bothered by this deity coming specifically to him. But, perhaps, he realizes, it's not so hard to believe. He's infamous, a conqueror so powerful and renowned that he is on the same level as the Greek hero Achilles, or even Hercules, to be more accurate. It's natural for him to feel prideful about that, at the time, when he considers being a conqueror a good thing, and it's natural for a God to take notice of his abilities and seek him out.

Essentially, where this headcanon ends up going is as follows:

The Blood God, impressed by Techno's abilities, makes him immortal. Immortality comes at a dire price, and Technoblade must take the god as his patron deity for as long as he walks the earth, and he adopts both the phrasing "Technoblade never dies" and "Blood for the Blood God". This gift, his immortality, floods him with more pride, more dedication- and it also quadruples his value to any rulers that could have him in their army. A warrior beyond death, with more knowledge and intellect than any architect, philosopher, or strategist in any land. As time passes, progressing quickly, endlessly for Technoblade, he learns of the way people view him as a weapon, something to use to further their reach and power.

In retaliation, he begins to take his title as a conqueror very literally.

And, so, the reputation of Technoblade being a noble, grand soldier of the old times twists into him being a man capable of butchering entire armies, strolling through towns and cities and leaving wreckage claimed in his name behind. Technoblade is no longer a tool, a weapon, yes, but only for himself and for the God of Blood. He becomes an Emperor, a conquerer comparable to those we know such as Alexander the Great, or any others that have managed to spread an empire across a vast amount of land and still maintain control of it.

Surely, before the schism of the world, when everything was peaceful, early on, he had a family- mother, father, siblings, grandparents, even- but over the centuries he begins to forget, the memories of things before the deity granting him immortality becoming a grey sludge, fading further and further into nothingness.

He loses himself in human error, in leadership, in the blood-

The Blade is solidified as a legend, a legend of death, blood, war, and conquerors. His name is whispered across the old world, known truly, by some, but feared by all.

There is only one who is equally as feared as he, in this early time of conflict- The Angel of Death. Rumors and whispers he has heard are quite similar to those about he, himself, and this is both intriguing and threatening.

One day, they meet.

And the rest is history. ...Literally, they're old LMAO

edit because i missed something: the primary idea of this hc is that the reason technoblade ends up becoming a total anarchist after the failure of the antarctic empire (for whatever reason it ended- this also contributes to his reasoning obviously) is that he vaguely remembers a time before governments, before conflict and war- peace through the dictionary definition of anarchy, not chaos. hes old enough to have seen a world before all of these things, and he ends up wanting it back after everythign goes so horribly wrong.

Alright alright, let’s do this.

So you know how there’s this whole ‘Techno is the middle sibling’ but also ‘Wilbur said he’s two minutes older than Techno’ debate thing in the fandom?

Well my brain has created a headcanon to solve this problem. I know a way both things can be correct.

Technoblade is the Blood God.

Now that’s not new or anything because there are lots of headcanons with Technoblade actually being the Blood God. But my take on it is that, just like Phil, he’s also immortal. He’s not as old as Phil, but he’s still much, much older than Wilbur and Tommy.

Which, you know, seems like it would make sense that he’s the older brother. He’s a couple centuries or so old.

However, he’s of course not physically old. Phil is only 32 yet has lived for at least a few centuries. So that means Techno could also be only 21 yet live at least a few centuries. He may have the experience of many centuries, but his body is only 21 when it comes to mortal years.

And since I (along with many others, I’m sure) also headcanon that Techno was just found in the Nether by Phil, maybe they aren’t sure of his age. Like, do you think Techno knew how old he was when he was found? Time in the Nether works very differently, so even if he knew, that number would probably be skewed when he got to the Overworld. And that’s adding onto the whole ‘immortal years work differently than mortal years’.

Wilbur just met someone who looked the same age as him, and as far as they know, is around the same age as him. And he was like ‘twin brother :]’ without really considering/caring that Techno was also technically older than him.

In conclusion, Techno is simultaneously the eldest sibling and middle child.

TL;DR: Headcanon Techno is immortal so he’s technically older but he’s physically around the same age as Wilbur so Wilbur decided that he was older by a few minutes.

quick warning i guess: this is just based on the characters and not what pronouns I think the ccs use. some are backed up by stuff ccs have said, some aren't. these are also just my opinions and nobody has to agree with them!

- techno uses xe/xem but also doesn't correct people unless they ask what xir pronouns are

- ranboo uses he/they/it and considering end/ender pronouns, but doesn't really care and is still understanding pronouns

- dream uses he/it but doesn't correct anyone who doesn't use it/it's

- dream xd uses it/they but doesn't correct people who use he/him

- awesamdude, wilbur, and george use he/they and punz uses they/he

- purpled mostly uses he/him but people started using they/them and he was like "oh! pog!" and is questioning / experimenting

- tubbo uses he/they/bee

- bbh uses he/they/muffin

- eret and puffy use all pronouns

- ponk is comfy with all pronouns but prefers masc/neutral stuff

i'm curious—do you have headcanons for techno's backstory?

Oh, plenty! Some of these are even mutually exclusive because I’m an indecisive nerd and I like to alter Techno’s backstory to fit the specific fic I’m writing. The one I’m most fond of, use most often and also consider my ‘headcanon’ for canon dsmp goes something like this:

Technoblade was born in the nether, to a piglin mother. Father unknown. Piglins do not care that he’s a hybrid and for a short blip of time he grows up in a Bastion and has a relatively normal, happy childhood

In his younger years - think age 6 or 7 - humans attack the sounder and Techno is taken to the Overworld as part of a fighting ring

Techno grows up there for most of his life, somewhere along the way he catches the Blood God’s attention and becomes its conduit

When he’s in his late teens the illegal arena is discovered and closed down. Suddenly being free, Techno goes to Hypixel because fighting is all he knows. He becomes a champion there. He meets Phil

Phil and Techno go to SMP Earth and create the Arctic Empire and rule for a little while before that all falls apart

Variations are pog! I don’t headcanon Techno as immortal usually, but if he were I think events would be mostly the same, just on a different time scale. I also like and use headcanons where Techno came to the Overworld on his own and was raised by Phil or raised on Hypixel as a community. And I also have a - rather self-indulgent - AU background where Technoblade is a former cult kid >.>’

Istg I’ve asked for so many headcanons but you literally give me so much inspiration so thank you. Do you happen to have any immortal Phil hc? like how it began and stuff like that

young phil is brash and impulsive, but very skilled, and manages to secure a deal with an equally young god (mumza canon pog?)

in return for two of his lives, phil is granted immortality. he can still die, so he has to protect his remaining life with everything he has, but he no longer ages like a normal human

he almost loses the life a couple times, but he gets better at protecting himself

it isn't until his first friends start dying that phil begins to realize the consequences of being immortal

the first few deaths don't shock him that much; he is a warrior after all, and it isn't like he hasn't seen death before

but then other friends start aging, and phil stays the same, and he realizes that the price of immortality wasn't just two of his lives

yknow that doctor who quote? "immortality isn't living forever, immortality is everyone else dying"? yeah

he starts trying to cut himself off from people, but it's hard, because he's so lonely, and even if other people can't relate to his immortal life, they're still company

over the centuries he starts developing a persona as a cheerful father figure, because that way he can, at the very least, help others without having to worry about much in return

sometimes, though, a chaotic side shows through; a side that has seen wars that span for eons and entire nations fall in the blink of an eye, so why would burning a few buildings mean anything? they'd rebuild, soon enough

after a few more centuries alone, he comes across a young toddler, not any older than 2 or 3, sitting on the side of the road, and, well, he can't just leave the kid

he's helped people out before, especially children, but he's never raised a kid like he raises wilbur

when wilbur's a bit older, he goes off on his own, and that's when phil meets techno

techno is a lot different than the other people he's met; he doesn't expect phil to be this kind, caring father or to be a ruthless angel of death, because he too knows what it's like to create a facade and then be judged on it

techno is one of the first people phil opens up to about being immortal- not just that he is immortal, but all the shit that comes with it

I try my best to portray the character of Phil as best as I can. That being said, I operate under a lot of headcanons and stuff. Here’s some notes:

This version of Philza is nearly two thousand years old.

Philza’s only biological son is Wilbur. I usually operate under the assumption that Wilbur is a blue jay avian due to my art.

Techno and Phil are platonic soulmates. Aspects of their relationship may resemble queerplatonic partners. They are long-time besties.

Philza is married to the Goddess of Death and is Her Angel :)

Phil is an Avian/Elytrian Hybrid. As you probably could guess he’s a crow. I give him crow traits sometimes. It’s funny.

This Phil is not a God, but he is conditionally immortal. He also is a soul reaper for headcanon reasons. Feel free to ask about that :)

Yes. Phil is still a weeb. Feel free to ask about weeb shit.

The Colorzas DO exist in the lore of this blog, but they are NOT alters. They are more like super saiyan forms, or like the Zangetsu situation. I do not want to misrepresent systems or DID.

Philza has dyschronometria. This means that he can’t always accurately tell the passage of time. This is just because of how old he is. He also tends to mix up some time units, names, and things along those lines.

I tend not to use tone indicators as Philza, but he can if asked for.

My thoughts on each Dream SMP character (sometimes thoughts on the cc leak in) in a few sentences. Like 5 people who follow me will be interested in this. I might update as my thoughts on the characters change.

Tommy: Like he says, I was indeed annoyed by him at first (mostly because he was loud) but his sense of humor has grown on me greatly. Needs a break. Overly demonized by the fandom

Techno: One half of my brain wants to argue critically about Techno and his methods, the other half just goes “haha funny pig man”. He always gets some of the coolest and most unique designs.

Tubbo: A chaos child hiding underneath the veil of a sweet innocent that he’s not even trying to keep up anymore. I support all of his actions at this point. He built some nukes? Nice. Built a hotel? You do you.

Wilbur: I started watching the SMP through Wilbur’s edited videos so it’s no surprise he was my favorite for season 1. I mostly just feel bad for him, but he’s still kind of a shit. He dug his own grave ever since the election. 

Dream: Piece of shit abusive asshole. The only character the evokes anger from me. cc!Dream is a cool guy though and scarily good at acting this out.

Philza: I’m so sick of the discourse around who’s dad he is. I don’t care, he’s an asshole either way. I would die for cc!Phil though so write that down.

Schlatt: Struck a good balance between funny and genuinely threatening. Sick of people trying to pretend he was a good guy actually just because he did one or two good things for L’manburg’s economy and because Wilbur was also pretty shit.

Unpopular opinion I guess but I don’t really want him to come back. He had a good run and reviving both dead characters would just make death feel meaningless.

Quackity: Very excited for his lore. One of the smartest characters imo and we were robbed of a Quackity + Techno confrontation at Doomsday.

Eret: Fairly neutral. I feel like he’s been stuck on “I want to make it up to the people I betrayed” and “I feel like I can’t do anything as king” ever since season 1, and his plot with Fundy never went anywhere. I can only hope he’ll be involved with Wilbur’s resurrection. I think it’s hilarious he’s taxing the entire server now. 

Fundy: Extremely neutral. For someone who wants to step out of his father’s shadow his character sure does revolve around his daddy issues, huh? He’s a good actor but his lore was fucked from the start for me. I will never sympathize with having daddy issues over a British e-boy and that’s that.

(I say this then proceed to feature him in all my fics so far)

Niki: Please get some therapy. Please. Cool motive, still murder. If she doesn’t cuss someone out in German during her villain arc than what’s the point?

Jack Manifold. His arc is fun, but so painful in conjunction with Tommy’s. I love that he uses Professor Layton music. Also cool motive, still murder. Currently at the Megamind phase of his arc.

Ranboo: my beloved. He’s grown on me a lot ever since the Tubbo shenanigans started and his reaction to Tommy’s death. I really appreciate characters who are introspective even if they don’t get everything right, and I really like that he’s very upfront about what he thinks. 

Awesamdude: Has a lot going for him lore wise. I don’t think I latched onto him as a father figure for Tommy as much as the rest of the fandom did (double this as of recent events). It’s funny that our standards have dropped so low that someone just has to be a decent person to Tommy though.

Ghostbur: Deserved better. While he’s a different entity from Wilbur, I still consider them the same person fundamentally. Ghostbur couldn’t have come from nowhere after all. Everyone ignores how fucked Doomsday was for him.

Karl Jacobs: Tales From The SMP is really cool and I love how he takes feedback and makes each one better than the next. His time traveler lore has mostly been shown to us through book entries so I’m gonna have to see him act it out to be more invested though.

Sapnap: Arson pog. I love how he’s really stepped up to roleplay recently. That scene with Dream in the prison? Great.

Ponk: Has some neat underrated lore with the village from the first Tales episode. The OG capitalist on the server before everyone having all these capitalist arcs.

Captain Puffy: I love that she’s just trying to be a decent person. Like not even as a mother figure or anything, she’s just looking out for people. I love her involvement in the egg plot and I really want a reunion between her and Niki soon.

Badboyhalo: Go OFF you funky egg man! I never thought such a wholesome person would make such a good villain. He’s also just a really supportive person in the community as well.

Foolish: Local cryptid. Hasn’t really done anything lore wise but I get the strong sense he will eventually. 

George: Is he even a character? I heard he doesn’t want to be involved with the lore. Eh, sleep jokes funny.

Skeppy: Not even really in the lore but simultaneously really important. That’s the kind of power he wields.

Purpled: The four minors on this server are diagnosed with trauma, trauma, trauma, and capitalist. Get that coin, Purpled Bedwars.

Punz: Had a banger of a line in the finale. Nice that we have more people in the Eggpire, and I really like the headcanon that he and Purpled are mercenary brothers. 

Antfrost: Seems chill, but he’s kind of just Bad’s sidekick at this point lore wise. I have a strong suspicious he’s read warrior cats.

Connoreatspants: Was lazy once and now we all think he’s immortal. Just out here trying to play Minecraft as everyone reenacts musicals and the Cold War around him.

:OOOO I absolutely love the name hard-core anon :DD that name makes me sound way cooler than what I actually am but I'm taking it and running sjsjeje and I'm the exact same! I get way to much into world building and minecraft is beyond amazing for it as you can basically create anything from solo journeys to entire civilizations! One of my favorite head canons though is that only hard-core players are able to have wings besides elytras, just cause I love the idea of secret wings, because in order to achieve wings you have to survive the end singlehandedly. Another really fun to imagine is that hard-core players are effectively immortal and collect actual players like a little team of bodyguards sjsjsks but ty for the name :DDD and you can make a tag if you wanna!! Im very very new but you seem really cool :]]

hardcore anon it is then!!! i don’t know you very well but to me you seem very cool to me so. and yes you totally get it, i think it’s mostly the simplicity of minecraft that makes it so easy to world build around it and the fact that it doesn’t have a concrete lore to it. but oooo i love that idea! like the idea that only hardcore players can have like different types of wings and have the ability of flight if i understand correctly while regular survival just have elytra so they can only glide instead of fly. you could cause so much hurt to characters if they don’t slowly grow the wings after beating the dragon but instead the like burst through their back instead. or it reminds me of some philza art i saw awhile ago that i think i reblogged, i’ll reblog it again if i can find it, but the idea was that phil’s wings were like tattoos on his back that he could like summon as wings which i think would be a super cool concept with your headcanon. i like your other little headcanon too, like the idea that maybe because hardcore players only have one life that they can effectively live forever if they don’t loss their one life and the idea that they just all either collect friends or better collect children like philza is lovely. like this idea of a little found family forming where they all protect the hardcore player since they only have one life, it think it would make for some great shenanigans kinda like with techno and phil where techno yells for phil to watch out whenever he spots a baby zombie. and you’re welcome for the name :D i’ll make you a tag and if you wanna tag your asks with hardcore anon that would be pog so i know who you are 👉👈 and it’s cool you’re new welcome aboard :D and ty you seem very cool as well!!!
