Just a little theory about the Fifth season of Teen Titans 2003

It was made very clear, right off the bat, during the fifth season of Teen Titans 2003, that the main antagonists, the Brotherhood of Evil, were actively forming alliances with a good number of the Titans’ past enemies. However, as I’m sure many other people have already taken notice of and pointed out; there were still a few other bad guys who were not among the Brotherhood’s roster of allies. The most notable of those who were not present but could have been were;

Slade -

Blackfire -

and

Brother Blood -

(I think that there are more than enough good reasons for why Trigon wasn’t going to be there)

This does seem like the kind of thing that certain fans would find rather peculiar, because, if the Brotherhood’s main objective was to take down the Titans through allying themselves with members of their rogues gallery, why wouldn’t they recruit the three that have had the highest success record in dealing with them and likely have a significant amount of useful inside knowledge about them?

Now I might not be able speak for why Blackfire was not invited, but I do have a theory for why neither Slade nor Brother Blood were there either.

You see; while Slade and Brother Blood would have both been very powerful allies, the fact of the matter was that they were both far too powerful, far too capable and far too close to being on the same level as the Brotherhood themselves. To put it plainly; the Brain probably knew that these two mastermind arch-villains were both far too beyond his ability to control and were the most likely to try and double cross him, and had the best chance of success (in fact, I even read somewhere that if Season Five had been given more episodes, there would have been a storyline about how Slade joins and then takes over the Brotherhood of Evil).

I guess, when alls said and done, these three bad guy factions are more likely to engage each other in a fearsome ‘gang war’ than they are to work together.

Anybody have any thoughts that they’d like to share?

YOU GUYS. There's a Tintin spoof in Teen Titans Spotlight #11!

It's Spotlight on Brotherhood of Evil. Warp teleports himself, Brain, Mallah, Phobia out of a shoot-out in France and accidentally get transported to an alternate universe. Getting hit by one of the assassin's lasers had scrambled Warp's brain and he now he can't remember how to get back. Before they can work the problem, they immediately get caught in a kerfuffle between some weird mutant people and a redhead riding a wolf. They manage to dispatch the mutant people in short order.

It's Captain Haddock and Professor Calculus!

Apparently, in this world, things went pear-shaped after Explorers On The Moon.

The moon landing year given is the same one as when the story first started being published in serialised form, a full 14 years before the real moon landing happened. I find it interesting that Herge very deliberately left out any fantastical or impossibly sci-fi elements, making what was a futuristic story for its time feel incredibly grounded in reality, but this comic takes an international intrigue plot and goes entirely bananas.

Tintin & The Mad Max Fury Road!

The Brotherhood decide to help out just to survive and steal the tech they need to unscramble Warp's powers from the Ark to get home. With Brain and Mallah leading the show, Tin and the freedom fighters take the citadel and bitchslap Rastapopoulos. Predictably, he tries to pull a Lex Luthor on Tin.

Apparently villains hate listening to other villains monologuing.

They're reunited with Professor Calculus. Aww.

Mallah's reaction to self-sacrificing heroic bullshit is so funny. And relatable tbh. 😂

When everything's done and dusted it turns out the whole thing was orchestrated by Dr. Mist with the help of French intelligence as a social experiment or something. Neat twist, but meh.

Incidentally I pity everyone who didn't grow up reading the Tintin comics. It's truly a timeless, all-ages series with no pandering or infantilization. Explorers is my favourite book after Red Rackham's Treasure. It's art and writing calibre is a stark contrast with this pulpy '80s DC comic. Though ngl, I missed seeing Thompson and Thomson.

I can't believe Teen Titans is officially 20 years old today. My favorite animated show and one of the best imo. It got me through a lot of shit & means the world to me

Starfire- the Heart

My favorite character on Teen Titans, and still my favorite hero.

A joyful person who loved the world around despite its cruelty. An immigrant who loved her culture yet always struggled w/ her sense of place and being an outsider like me. Her journey becoming more sure of herself & her place & an advocate for other outsiders like Red Star is beautiful one.

Cyborg- The Lynchpin

A extroverted, disabled black hero who had a deep internal struggle to accept that his disability doesn't contradict, but strengthens his humanity

His main arc on what it means to be a 'man' - that he doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone but instead be sure of himself. As a black hero, his defiance being rewarded, not shamed, resulting in victory in the end is still one of my favorites TT03 arcs

Raven- The Inspiration

When I was younger, I was embarrassed to admit how much I was like Raven bc I hated feeling like a closed-off outcast.

But now understanding Raven as a closed-off person who hid her emotions in spite of how she cared (which was the most out of anyone) to protect everyone. Who constantly fought for good despite being deemed a curse bc she hoped for better- Raven is an inspiration

Her journey to accept her emotions & forge her own destiny and not give into despair is one of the best arcs in all animation

Beast Boy, the Wild Card

To be honest, I despise his immaturity when I was younger.

Now I know he was just a kid trying to be happy despite his hardships (like terrible parentals & Terra).

His season of growing up, learning to let go, and building a team of underrated/inexperienced heroes like himself to defeat Brotherhood of Evil against all odds when all hope was lost was peak

Robin- the Leader

Finally, the Boy Wonder, what else is there to say?

A character so flawed, struggling w/ anger, darkness, and obsessiveness, but will go to war for his friends, & sacrifice all for those he loved.

Learning to let people in and that he can be more than hero. Best Robin adaptation we have seen.

Not just the core 5, but the entire Titans family was amazing. Characters who left an impact despite limited screentime. Más y Menos, Thunder and Lightning, Titans East, Speedy, Hotspot, Kole, and too many to name. With the best Bumblebee we have ever had in any media.

Thank you so much to Glen Murakami, David Slack, Amy Wolfram, Sam Register, Derrick Wyatt (RIP), Scott Menville, Hynden Walch, Khary Payton, Tara Strong, Greg Cipes, and so many countless others in the cast & crew for giving this to me and so many others.

Forever grateful for the Titans' stories & memories & for Robin, Cyborg, Starfire, Raven, and Beast Boy

Teen Titans 2003! Robin x Villain! Reader

“Let the adults handle this, Bird Boy.”

Robin’s icy gaze is more than enough to make you chuckle in amusement, faking a shiver. He looks away, his hand propped on his hip.

“Are you sure bringing them into this is a good idea?” He questions Cyborg with reluctance in his voice, gesturing carelessly to you.

“Watch it, Bird Boy. I have a name, y’know.”

“And so do I.”

“Bird Boy rolls off the tongue better.”

“Guys, stop!” Cyborg stands between the both of you, Robin’s gloved hands already curling into fists while your fingers brush against the hilt of your katana. Both of you are glaring at each other, only moving back when Beast Boy helps Cyborg move the two of you further apart.

“Man, getting these two to work together will be tougher than we thought.” Beast Boy comments with a sigh, already sweating from all the tension in the room.

You huff, crossing your arms. Robin uncurls his fists, looking away with a grumpy purse of his lips. “Whatever,” He mutters.

“How is it that we’ve faced two literal gods, Cinderblock, the Brotherhood of Evil, and yet they’re the only one that irritates you this much besides Slade??” Cyborg groans, holding his hand against his face and shaking his head in defeat.

“Aw, am I special?” You coo, moving to sit beside him and batting your lashes at his disgruntled figure.

“No, you’re not!” Robin moves away, and you almost fall off the chair, having leaned on his side with most of your body weight.

“Rude,” You mutter, eyeing his retreating figure. However, a light pink catches your eye, and you grin when you spot a faint blush that dusts the tip of his ears, his hesitant manner in speaking finally clueing you in. You hum in thought, lips tugging upwards into a smirk as ideas form in your mind.

Maybe things will start to get interesting around here.

"That Really Happened?!" DC Comics Tournament Entry #26

My Favorite Same-Sex Couple in DC Comics is Technically Bestiality and Metaphorically Incest

What Happened?

The Doom Patrol - "The World's Strangest Heroes" - has their fair share of strange adversaries. From the Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man to the Painting that Ate Paris, they've seen a lot of villains. Leading the list of Doom Patrol archenemies are my DC OTP - the Brain and Monsieur Mallah. One is a disembodied (human) brain in a cylindrical canister and the other is a gorilla that has was granted a genius level IQ and raised by...the scientist who would one day become the Brain.

After leading the Brotherhood of Evil (not to be confused with Marvel Comic's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants), the Brain and Mallah continued to plague the Doom Patrol and the Teen Titans. In Grant Morrison's 90s Vertigo Doom Patrol series, they break into the hero's base in order to steal a new advanced body built for Robotman. Unfortunately, the new Robotman body has already achieved sentience and has vowed to activate its self-destruct if it is ever forced to house another human brain. When the Brain is in the new body, he and Mallah confess their love for each other and kiss as the self-destruct activates, leaving behind nothing but Mallah's beret. Reactions to this development were mixed at the time, with letters pointing out that Morrison canonized a couple that were: 1. evil, 2. gay, 3. interspecies, and 4. metaphorically incest due to the Brain raising Mallah.

Mallah and the Brain would later resurface years later alive (unexplained) in what would (and already had) become a reoccurring pattern. They show up, they die, they come back. They originally died at the end of the original 60s Doom Patrol run. Gorilla Grodd beats Mallah to death with Brain's canister in a coded gay-bashing incident during Salvation Run. In a move so poorly considered it made me, a massive Doom Patrol fan, drop the title from my pull-list, the (AFAIK straight) writers of the most recent series, Unstoppable Doom Patrol, decided to have Mallah kill the Brain in the first issue.

While some writers are onboard with them as a couple, it is obvious that others find the pair problematic, with many adaptations removing the romantic element (Teen Titans), removing the romantic element while also having them betray each other (Doom Patrol), or making them not villains (My Adventures with Superman).

As for me, I love the uncomfortable space that they occupy. Their relationship, which is between two adults who are fully sentient and able to provide consent, doesn't care about your feelings or values. They're queer villains and DC needs to stop defanging or watering down what is weird and wonderful about them.

I haven't been on this platform in years and slowly started making posts and reblogs again. Most of the accounts I did follow back then are either gone, or no longer active.
