It’s so funny to me that Tegan has personal trauma associated with the Master, the Cybermen, and the Daleks, and Ace just... doesn’t. She had lots of issues but none closely tied to those particular enemies. When the Master tried to drag her like he dragged Tegan he was like “remember how you um. uhhhhh. Don’t like your given name and left the Doctor off-screen” and Ace was like “Furry” and the Master had no choice but to take it.

anyway the fifth doctor has a shared language with each of his first three companions - mathematics with Adric, science with Nyssa, his beloved earth with Tegan.

But the only shared language between the group as a whole is that of loss, and that is hiding in the uneasiness behind every interaction, every fractious moment between them, why they never quite gel together as a team.

I've finally hit rock bottom

I created a sheet using the godly table at http://eyespider.org.uk/drwho/pd/list.html (which lists all the stories in chronological order, with a lot of useful info attached), added release dates and companions data (from the Tardis wiki), then made some cool charts to track the companions appearances and the different types of media of each fifth Doctor's story.

anyway I think the holographic implants should be permanent and from now on Tegan, Ace, and Yaz should, at the most emotionally needed or hilariously inconvenient moments, be haunted by their best friend and actually have a chance to talk with them.

Tegan Green-Song was a half-elf ranger, and devotee of the god Lathander. Ever the optimist, she struck out on her own at a young age, with only her companion and pet - a bear, Svir - for company. Wanting to do good in the world, though with little in the way of concrete ideas as to how, she started small, picking her way across the landscape, scattering acts of kindness and vigilante justice along the way.

A few years into her wanderings, she came upon a town besieged by a black dragon. A dreadful, gargantuan beast of impossible power, she knew she would never be able to defeat it on her own. She turned to prayer, instead, hoping that perhaps her god would have an answer - or at least provide her with insight as to how she could defeat it. However, it was not Lathander that answered her prayers, but the Lich God, Vecna.

Sensing the desperation in the young woman, he offered her a deal; he would give her the knowledge and means to slay the dragon, and she would be his Chosen. Thinking herself clever, and believing she could weasel out of such a role with the God, Tegan accepted the deal. But liches, of course, are not like devils or fey, they do not need to write out long-winded contracts, full of clauses, and loopholes sewn tightly shut, and nor are they bound to speak only the truth - no matter how riddlesome it may be. No, liches may lie and cheat and curse, and curse her he did.

Upon accepting the deal, he placed a curse upon her; for every act she did contrary to his tenets, he would own another piece of her soul.

It was slow acting, and it took a number of years after she had defeated the dragon to truly notice the toll it was taking on her. Unknown illness seemed to sap her strength, nightmares infested her dreams, and she could feel herself losing something, though she did not yet know what. She went to a cleric of Lathander, hoping her God could give her answers, and it was from that cleric that she finally learned of the truth of what she had done.

With the curse now hanging over her head, and time steadily ticking away, she set off again to search for a cure, and for Lathander's blessing - if either were even possible.

In Baldur's Gate on her way to search for the Blood of Lathander, she was snatched up by the Nautiloid, and a mindflayer tadpole inserted into her brain. Though the tadpole seems to be staving off the curse, Vecna owning her soul might be the least of her worries.
