The global average temperature on Friday was more than two degrees Celsius hotter than pre-industrial levels for the first time on record, Europe's Copernicus climate monitor said Monday, adding Saturday likely continued the unprecedented warming streak. Months of extraordinary heat are expected to make 2023 the hottest year in history, with droughts, massive wildfires and fierce storms ravaging swathes of the planet. According to new data, global temperatures on November 17 were 2.07 °C above the pre-industrial average, the EU's Climate Change Service (C3S). "This was the first day when global temperature was more than 2 °C above 1850-1900 levels," said Samantha Burgess, C3S Deputy Head on X, formerly known as Twitter. Preliminary data suggests the record continued into Saturday, with temperatures around 2.06 °C above the pre-industrial average, Copernicus said on X.

Whilst America freezes, Europe is in the midst of a winter heat wave. Some of these temperatures are 4-5 degrees Celsius higher than previous January records. BTW, these things are directly linked, due to the unstable polar vortex.
People may not see this as a bad thing- particularly with high energy prices this winter, but it is disrupting the normal seasonal weather seen in Northern/Eastern Europe, which may have knock on impacts on the growing seasons of crops. Excessive snow melt can also lead to flooding, which can be a major problem.
If these trends of warmer temperatures continue on to next summer, we’ll also see issues around drought and people dying due to extreme heat, like we did this summer.
Anyway, it’s just another reminder that “climate change” isn’t going to happen in some far off future. It’s 2023. It is the future. This is happening now.
We need to find ways to deal with it, and to try and ensure things don’t get any worse.

I was on a long car ride with some coworkers from a different department last week and at some point I mentioned my temperature blanket where I knit a row every day to record the temperature for that day. The guy driving was like “oh that’s kinda weird”
Like buddy THAT’s your bar for weird???? Literally the most normal thing I’m doing right now

It is not like they do not consistently have chocolate week during the hottest times of the summer. The heat has always been an issue during chocolate week. So it’s not like it’s a surprise. You are telling me after over a DECADE, they haven’t modified the tent to make it bearable?!! You have not put in measures for the BAKERS OWN COMFORT?!
It is at this point that it is jeopardizing their health!
Put in fans, put in air conditioning, give the bakers WATER, allow them to REST. Modify the challenges to account for this temperature inside the tent.
PUT THE BAKERS SAFETY FIRST.
I should not be seeing bright red bakers and bakers on the verge of fainting!
Bake Off HAS THE FUNDS!
Take some of the money off of Paul and Prue’s paychecks and MODIFY THE FUCKING TENT.
Because I betchu that in the hottest days of the year, Paul and Prue are not feeling that heat one iota. They are in their trailers or inside a building and cool as a fucking cucumber.
Don’t deprive the bakers of that same accommodation.
To do otherwise after thirteen fucking years is perpetual, intentional negligence.

🫠 The goddamn temperature record was broken more than 10 times this month.
As in, the warmest day record (globally) EVER was broken on the 3rd of July. Then that record was broken the next day, on the 4th. This one was broken on the 5th... and then on the 6th...
This all follows last month being the hottest June on record.
It's a CRISIS.

so i'm crocheting a temperature blanket this year. my initial instinct was to say it's for my 32nd year but that's not actually how birthdays work so instead i'm awkwardly going with "the year i'm 32" and shortening it to just 32 mostly. anyway, that's besides the point.
i have the colour palette/yarn, i have the pattern (toni lipsey's linen stitch pixel temp blanket), i made a gauge swatch, i've started tracking temps (i've recorded hi/lo starting on dec. 8).... but fuck, i'm having so much trouble figuring out the temperature gauge!!!
i can't decide what the intervals should be, i can't decide if i want purples to be warm temps or cold temps or where to put the neutrals, i can't decide if i want to fiddle/tweak(/cheat?) and use the lows for the cold temps instead of the high which was the initial plan.... i just don't know!!! ugh.

The climate-denying governor of the state most susceptible to climate change is neglecting Florida for his ailing presidential bid as we enter the most active part of the Atlantic Basin hurricane season.
I haven't seen this many disturbances at the same time in the Atlantic since 2020 – the year they ran out of hurricane names and burned through half of the Greek alphabet.
Tumblr media
Probably 1 of the 5 will fizzle out. 2 of them could follow in the footsteps of low energy Hurricane Don and harmlessly buzz around the mid Atlantic.
But the disturbance near the Windward Islands about to enter the Caribbean needs to be watched. And the one north of Cuba heading into the Gulf of Mexico has the potential to get nasty under the right conditions.
Warm seas act like jet fuel for tropical cyclones. The Gulf of Mexico is HOT.
Temps in parts of the Gulf are at the top of the scale shown on the right (32° C/89.6° F).
Tumblr media
Some water temperatures along the southern Gulf coast of Florida have been over 100° F earlier this summer.
There should be no place for active climate deniers in public office.
