Lower Decks Season 4 Episode 5

I think they fumbled the ball on this episode.

For starters, I'm sorry, but the season 3 finale was incredibly disappointing. Mariner's powder keg of a relationship with her mother finally blows up in the most foreshadowed event of the show, and the writers fumble, HARD.

Instead of having Mariner go off and be a badass space archaeologist and having Freeman (AND JENNIFER) go through a character arc in which they recognize why they believed Mariner would actually trash the Cerritos to the reporter, they just have her...change her mind? And come back? And say it WASN'T A BIG DEAL???

No, that's not the Beckett we'd spent three seasons getting to know. I would have taken her rallying the Cali-classes and then slipping away before anyone could ask her to stay, but s3 ep10 was a cop-out, plain and simple.

And now, they have an episode where the central theme is heightened emotions out in the open. The literal perfect setup for Mariner and her mother (OR JEN, GODDAMNIT) to have a real conversation about how they feel about that utter betrayal. They could have done that. They should have done that.

Instead, we get Boimler doing charades and learning that Security does mental health shit. The closest thing we get is a throwaway line where Beckett cries about rescuing her mommy.

I don't think Jennifer has had a single line yet this season.

Bad. Call.

watching the star trek Enterprise finale and this shit SUCKS. overall this has been my least favorite star trek series and I've only made it this far out of stubbornness. it's had its good points but I'm almost always finding reasons to put off watching finales because it means the show I've been watching is over. i was so excited to put this on tonight because then it's DONE and i don't have to watch it ever again. this is weird and cheap and bad. it's awkward. extremely insincere. riker is here, but it's exceptionally vague about why. he's watching a holodeck program and troi is holding his hand the whole time until he. comes to a conclusion. makes his decision. says he's gonna talk to picard and that's it. absolutely no closure on that. they killed the token engineer that every fucked up thing happens to. VERY abruptly. AFTER troi SAYS he's going to die. what a fucking shitshow

If season 2 of doctor who had a musical episode (if only. IF ONLY):

Doctor and Rose would have a song like "Ready Set, Not Yet" from Beetlejuice about saying I love you to each other.

Jackie would have a song that started out really sweet and meaningless until you realise it's about her fear of loosing her daughter the way she lost her husband.

Mickey would have the great ballad in the middle about all his frustration, probably while he was all by himself fixing a car. Thematically, the song would probably be about how he just can't get himself to get into a car/truck and drive off, referencing his struggle to get away from Rose and foreshadowing his departure in the cybermen two parter.

Rose would have some huge "I want" song about leaving everything behind and never looking back that just smells of hybris. If the doctor had any song of his own, it would probably be a reprise of her song, but sadder, in which he reflects on her mortality and her indifference to it.
