overly emotional drv3 angst rant time. even though the fandom was actual hot garbage and gave me severe mental problems for a solid 8 months i genuinely do believe both characters and concepts could have been so so good

it gen maddens me like a battle royale murder mystery AND social sim is a gret concept and that’s why everyone likes dr in the first place but it’s NEVER been for the lore or even the gore. which is disappointing. bc the most fucked up thing ppl usually remember are the pedobait shills in udg

i dont care about thh or sdr2 even though they have more iconic characters and themes [thh is best in lore and setting ground down, sdr2 has best setting and Nagito Komaeda while drv3 has the best character roundup] [i never watched the anime or read the extra content since nobody but 5 komahina fans care bout them anyway]

maybe this is because of my recent dive into edgy territory but i think going for a more distrust-style approach would’ve been so good. there’s no such thing as “too violent” when your game’s m17 [well i guess you wouldn’t wanna be r18 but i doubt that’d come unless you showed hole]

having a mainstream gore game would’ve been fun... too bad the existing dr fanbase consists of children arguing about whether a flashy male is “gay coded” for saying saying maybe two slang words or if it’s a CRIMINAL OFFENCE to like a guy who said a homophobic slur in japanese [that was corrected in the localisation mind you] because japan finds regressive culture totes hilare

i gotta replay the games because actually i sped through the whole fandom without paying a lick of attention. they’re in my steam library but i never touched em. i never finished thh since ch5 annoyed me to hell and back and i never returned. it might annoy me too much though since i believe one of dangan’s MAJOR flaws is that it has too many characters

in sdr2 and v3 if your fave died before ch4 then you are deemed irrelevant forever and only your niche fans will care

and yet still nobody gives a shit about himiko yumeno. such is life

People are being drama queens over nothing like why is everyone pretending this twist ruined tomura's character when this shit was foreshadowed and it's so obvious?

Also since tomura mentioned before the league not having a healer maybe he'll unlock reconstruction; heal deku and the villains since everyone in fucked up condition.

I talked so much about this on twitter I think I will throw up if I have to explain what you just said to other people. Some are saying that it 'absolves' hero society from it's issues (it doesn't, no one still helped Tenko because they believed that heroes are the ones who should be, well, heroes), some are saying that it ruins the fact that Tenko was 'born wrong' and was rejected by the world for something he couldn't control when it NEVER WAS the point of his backstory. AFO convincing Kotarou to have Tenko doesn't change anything about society's faults nor about the abuse Tenko experienced at home.

And the fact that AFO already knew who Tenko was when he met him was there since day fucking one - he literally addressed by his FULL NAME and knew exactly what happened to him! Even if someone did help Tenko, AFO would've kept stalking him, probably 'causing some shit to try and snatch Tenko anyway. Because that's WHAT HE DOES.

Tenko was neither rejected for having no quirk nor for having Decay. Kotarou would've rejected his desire to be a hero anyway, because that rejection was due to his trauma (which was, ding-ding, caused by Nana trying to save Kotarou from AFO in the first place!!!! AFO was the cause from the start!). He would've hated the idea of Tenko becoming a hero whether Tenko had a quirk or not. The idea that Decay was the reason Tenko was ignored was what AFO made him to believe, it was never true in Tenko's case. The ONLY societal issue that ever truly mattered when it came to Tomura was the fact that hero society made people complacent and distanced from reality.

People just... latched onto the wrong ideas when it came to Tomura and what made him a good character for the sake of seeing him as more 'relatable'.

And I saw some people say that AFO being behind Tomura's backstory makes Tomura into a 'perfect victim' when his appeal was that he's not, that his destructive tendecies are a bad coping mechanism and that made him relatable, but now it turns out that AFO just made him think he wants to destroy, so it's not Tomura's own coping mechanism anymore... which is completely wrong. TOMURA IS A MURDERER. He automatically isn't a 'perfect victim'. None of the villains are. Destruction (and self-destruction) IS Tomura's coping mechanism. It BECAME one, it wasn't one from the start. Sure, AFO was the one who made him think he wants to destroy, but that was always the case. Tenko didn't want to kill people on his own. But AFO also didn't make Tomura want to destroy everything either. Or feel relief when he was destroying stuff. This was Tomura, and Tomura alone.

Destroying brought him the sense of catharsis, because it reaffirmed Tomura's beliefs about himself (the beliefs that were created by AFO, which was, again, always the case, and a lot of people talked about it for years prior to these chapters). That when he destroys, at least he's being himself. «Everyone will keep rejecting me anyway even if I try not to be a bad kid, but if I'll embrace my real self and do what I want to do (I don't) at least I'll be accepted by someone». He followed AFO's words and killed those two hooligans for the unsaid promise of being accepted - something that he craved the most. Destruction is still his unhealthy coping mechanism - he destroys stuff -> feels good because he feels reassured in his purpose and his views -> it passes, he feels sick, angry, empty and depressed -> he is in need of some catharsis -> rinse and repeat.

I don't think she's one that beats around the bush to tell someone her feelings, even if she's not sure you feel the same.

Probably goes up to you one day and just kinda says it! She doesn't see the point in pining when you two could be even happier even sooner!

If you say yes, she'll play one of her pieces for you.

Oh yea that reminds me - she TOTALLY writes music for you on, like, a daily basis.

Can you imagine going with her to her piano room, falling asleep, and then waking up to her softly playing a piece she wrote for you?

"Oh, you're awake! I'm sorry if I woke you up, sweetheart, but there's a piece I'd like to show you that I wrote just for you while you were sleeping - would you like to hear it?"

She'd be the kind to gently show you off, if you know what I mean?

Like, she isn't SUPER in everyone's face about it, but she takes every chance she can get to talk about how cool you are and how lucky it is that you two got together!

She probably doesn't get jealous easily. She knows that you're trustworthy, she's confident that you won't just drop her on the spot if someone even more attractive comes along, and she knows that she's also a pretty nice girlfriend herself!

We love a self-confident queen!

She'd take you to all her piano performances! If you don't like classical music... well, that's either going to change or you're going to be in for quite the ride.

If you told her you didn't like going to them, she'd get a little passive-aggressive for a bit - she loves you and doesn't want to make you do anything you don't want to, but at the same time, she feels a little like you don't care about her as much as she cares about you and that hurts her.

Kaede would also be VERY enthusiastic about anything you've got going on.

Sports? She goes to every game/practice and brings embarrassing signs!

Even before you two got together, she had a habit of following you around to make sure that you weren't going to get hurt and weren't being touched by any degenerates.

It could even dip into borderline stalking territory at some point.

If you're strong/into martial arts, you're her new favourite sparring partner!

Somehow both the complete opposite and exactly the same as Kaede when it comes to confessing.

If you're a guy, her misandry definitely tones down. As much as Tenko can tone it down, at least. It's definately going to be a lot harder for your relationship to move along, though.

If you're a girl, it's going to be a lot easier for the two of you to get close. She'll be very adamant about keeping you away from keeping you away from her so-called "degenerate males". If you ask her to stop, she'll try her best, but it's going to take some time.

She'd probably end up only confessing on accident, lol.

You know that video where the person goes “I’m going to confess to you on valentines day”? That's probably her.

She'll have this whole script planned out, so it turns out perfect, but then she slips up and says... that.

Once you two officially start dating, she tries to teach you martial arts, so you can defend yourself even when she isn't there. Whether this succeeds or not... is up in the air.

She really likes to feed you for some reason...

She's probably going to be a bit of a tsundere - it'll get better over time but it'll never go away, and I think that's part of her charm!

She likes to hang around you, and likes when you sit with her while she's inventing, whether or not you understand what's going on.

I honestly hc that her main love language is quality time because it reassures her that you actually like her (whether that be platonic or romantic) instead of just liking her appearance or body.

She can have a bit of a hard time talking to you normally sometimes, since I also don't think she's ever had a relationship where the main focus was emotions and the two people actually really liked each other and not just for doing adult stuff.

So these new feelings of attraction are a bit new to her.

Because of this, I think she'd try a couple ways of "flirting" that only succeeded in making everyone uncomfortable.

That's obviously not the best way to go about it, but it's the only way she knows, so you'd have to tell her.

She thinks that you now hate her forever and probably hides from you. If she does see you she runs off, lmao. She's not the bravest girl.

You'd have to be the first one to confess. She would get really defensive at first and would probably take a while to accept it and realized that you liked her for her.

After you did get together, she'd always be making stuff to make your life easier.

"What do you mean 'that's a little unnecessary?' Babe, this gorgeous girl genius just invented THE solution to your daily problem of needing to find the correct amount of milk to put in your cereal, and it only takes up, what, five square feet!"

She might have a hard time defending herself, but she tries her best to defend you.

Is immediately up to throw down the moment she hears someone insult you lol.

Miu's also one of those people who's really academically smart but kind of stupid everywhere else.

So, you might need to help her with little things like cooking or apologizing.

She always makes it up to you, though - with yet another unnecessary invention XD.

Very jealous, and can get openly hostile with the person she thinks is about to sweep you off your feet. She really just loves you a lot, though, and thinks she knows that you can do so much better than her, though she'd never tell anyone that.

Maybe not the best with advice, but I think she could actually be a darn good listener when she wants to. Very good when you just need to vent + cuddle.

BYAKUYA TOGAMI - finds it disgusting and insufferable

"not another one of these peasants... and an indifferent one? hell."

you? indifferent? wow. worse person to be handicapped around.

at first he'd give you the stank-eye. he'd treat you the same as he treats everyone: like a peasant under him.

but oh no. hell will break loose when he finds out you're indifferent.

he'd be such a drama queen, never wanting to be in the same room as you, scooting away, making a face whenever you were around.

byakuya would treat your autism like the plague.

he is in his most annoying era whenever toko annoys him, making sarcastic remarks and comments here and there.

though once you manage to befriend him or i guess tame him like some beast, he'd stop with the bratty ass behavior. maybe not with the distancing himself and leaving the room shenanigans, but still.

whenever he found you annoying (which is most of the time) he'd just pretend he doesn't care or hear, walk away or recommend you go annoy naegi or kirigiri.

one upside is you could basically ask him for money to buy stim toys, weighted blankets or sensory stuff and he'd just say "take it" and throw a thick, fat wad of cash at you.

MONDO OOWADA - finds himself relating to you

"don't think of yourself like that, s/o. i like you most when you're you."

yeah... even though he's the leader of japan's most popular biker gang, he has his number of his own insecurities and struggles.

one is he was and still is, never able to properly socialize with people, that being the reason why he's always so loud and interrupts everyone.

reverse comfort

he's not embarrassed of you, he's embarrassed of himself.

you always have to comfort him when he finds himself in third or second place.

you and scented candles are his emotional support.

sometimes he'd randomly scare you by picking you up from behind.

need not fear, he also does the same thing to ishimaru, in fact he does it more to kiyotaka than you.

if you're cold he'd lend you his jacket.

MAKOTO NAEGI - would find positivity and hope in it

"come on... it's not your fault. plus, it made you who you are right now, it made you you, and i love that."

whenever you're down, makoto would make up stupid stories to try and get you to crack. [ you can decide whether or not s/o ends up laughing at his stories or not ]

as well as dumb stuff that's happened to him due to his 'luck', like him losing his sock and never finding it.

he'd let you ruffle and mess up his hair, also warning you about his ahoge so you don't stab yourself.

sometimes when he has nightmares he'd knock on your door and ask if he could stay for a bit.

in the morning though you won't have to run to the lunch hall, because well, you'll find your breakfast sitting on your bedside table alongside some juice or milk.

whenever you do crazy things, makoto would just watch nervously and would only interfere when you're about to get hurt.

also he likes to stargaze with you at midnight when everyone's asleep.

KIYOTAKA ISHIMARU - worries about you, yet supports you.

"as long as you don't run in the halls or scream like mondo- you'll remain my closest friend!"

sometimes he'd unintentionally throw in a sarcastic or dramatic remark, but that's just him, and you know that.

usually when you're hyper active to the point where you can't eat on your own, he takes it as his own responsibility to feed you manually (and make sure you don't starve to death)

he'd always start off the day with a greeting and how your day went.

since he's asked so many people that, he can tell when you're lying, and would ask what's wrong.

persistent bby

rarely you warn him about mondo picking his ass up, since you find it hilarious.

however you two always have each others' backs.

CHIHIRO FUJISAKI - relates to you on the same level

"don't worry- if i go, alter ego will stay with you till you go too, and then we'll be reunited! right s/o...?"

aside from mondo, you'd be the second person he'd tell his secret to. he knows he can trust you with it, especially when he isn't ready for the world's criticism.

whenever his day was just a horrible one in general, he knows he can come to you for comfort.

before going to bed you both make each other hot chocolates.

you'd lend chihiro some of your clothes whenever he'd decide his confidence level for that day.

if you can't beat a level on a game, just ask chihiro, he'll work his cheating magic.

LEON KUWATA - would try to understand your disability

75% of the time he doesn't know what you're doing, but goes along with it.

you'd always be cheering the loudest in the audience at his baseball matches.

he'd be appreciative of your craziness and impulsive actions most of the time.

like you managing to break a vending machine and get like 10 energy drinks for the price of 1.

but sometimes he'll be really confuse and just leave you be... and by that i mean ditch you like the dick he is.

you'll have to navigate your way back.

once you do find him, you'll grab his shoulders from behind, making him scream like a little girl.

SAYAKA MAIZONO - finds it unique and supports you

"don't say that! you're waayy more special than the them!"

honestly she'd think it makes you unique from the others.

in fact, you guys would discuss about song lyrics and she'd take a lot of inspiration from you and your tales.

overall sayaka wouldn't mind whenever you let your heart out, she enjoys hearing your voice.

she's too embarrassed to admit that, though.

if you have long hair, she'd braid and mess around with it, also letting you mess with hers since she really likes your touch.

if you ever needed help with falling asleep soundly, sayaka would offer to sing you a song or a lullaby, as well as learn the lyrics to your favorite song after that night as backup.

pls- she'd be so patient with you. if you were ever mad, she'd leave you be to cool down. if you were upset or scared she'd hold and hug you, telling you everything will be okay. she'd listen to you vent your heart out.

she spends more time in your room chattering with you rather than her own room sitting miserably on a table rocking her brain back and fourth thinking of catchy song lyrics.

AOI ASAHINA - finds you even more adorable

she'd also get you stim toys and other stuff to distract yourself with incase she was busy with a competition or training with sakura.

CELESTIA LUDENBURG - doesn't care about it

"as long as it isn't infectious, you can have all the time and tea you want with and from me."

oh you were disabled? she didn't even notice.

celeste wouldn't give a flying fuck about it.

it's more of if you piss her off or not. if you don't, you can have tea with her, if you do... well, she'd either send you to kyoko or act like a less dramatic togami.

most of the time celeste would listen to whatever you had to say, or pretend she was listening and constantly nod her head.

she'd be hesitant to let you around grand bois chéri (her cat), so you'd have to try your hardest to prove to her you won't injure or let chéri get injured in your care.

other than that celeste would treat you like any other person.

if you get too out of hand for her though, she'd get you some sensory or stim toys to keep you busy from annoying her.

KYOKO KIRIGIRI - would be supportive of you no matter what

JUNKO ENOSHIMA - would be inquisitive and criticize

has no idea and knowledge about disabilities and stuff.

she's worse than togami.

she'd always humiliate and embarrass you in front of people to cause despair

but she'd always find herself crawling back to you.

it's annoying, and she likes that. it brings her so much self-inflicted despair

uses you as an insult, especially towards mukuro and kamukura.

"you guys are WORSE than s/o, so much more annoying, no wonder s/o's spirit is brighter than your guys' futures."

when she isn't in such a despair-ful mood, instead of embarrassing you in public, she'd just grab your hand and lightly squeeze it, all while obnoxiously insulting her sister.

since she's an uncultured swine, she'd either let you squeeze, hug and cry to a monokuma bot or let mukuro deal with you.

SAKURA OGAMI - would be supportive and encourages you

"if you lift your chin up you'll see the path hope has created for you, s/o."

usually you'd watch her work out and bring and make her protein shakes whenever asahina was training.

she'd make sure you're good and healthy, both physically and mentally.

if you also wanted to train and work out with her, she'd offer to make you a healthy drink afterwards.

you two always have fun making smoothies and salads with funny drawings and faces made of tomatoes and onions after work out sessions.

would let you style her hair into ridiculous sights.

whenever you guys were in a meeting or assembly, you, asahina and sakura would crack jokes and giggle together.

both of you have this special greeting where you jump and high-five, most of the time sakura just stands with her hand up though.

TOKO FUKAWA - pretends to find you insufferable but relates to you

"i g-guess freaks talk to f-freaks, don't they...?"

at first she'd try to act like togami around you. avoiding you and giving you the "ew" look.

but later on she'd find herself warming up to you and doing small little affectionate tasks like bringing you a glass of water.

goes by the "if i do this for you, you will do this for me" sorta thing.

so she fetches you that glass of water (even if you didn't ask for it), you'll have to get her a glass of water or juice too next time.

sometimes you'd also help her chase byakuya, just for fun, and a way to relieve your anxieties.

you guys may or may not get too crazy and start a food fight, targetting each other and byakuya.

you both cower away when it comes to social interactions

BONUSES ;; TENKO CHABASHIRA & MIKAN TSUMIKI

TENKO CHABASHIRA - becomes more overprotective of you

"i have to defend you from the degenerate males, stay behind me, s/o!"

whenever anyone, especially the guys, approaches you, she'd jump into action and scare them away.

if you wanna talk to anyone of your guy friends, you'll have to distract her or send her away.

you two would toss small snacks into each others' mouth such as gummies or little candies and make a game of it. never hard candy though, since you guys don't wanna injure each other.

if any guy harassed you, they are going to the afterlife once tenko finds out.

you both do crazy things such as destroying a vending machine just to steal it's contents without paying.

she'd also invite you to watch himiko do magic tricks, but no guys allowed, okay?

since sometimes you can be really clueless and naive, tenko scans the place to look for any guys or suspicious people and hesitates to leave you alone to either run an errand, check on yumeno or use the bathroom.

also, whenever you're using the bathroom, tenko stands outside the toilet door, guarding it with her arms crossed and legs spread.

MIKAN TSUMIKI - worries more about you and becomes more clingy

"s/o! w-what happened?! who did this- or-or did you fall? eek! i'm sorry!"

would occasionally check on you and knock on your room door to a point where it gets sorta creepy and annoying.

you'll have to tell her that you're fine, and you won't die within' 10 seconds when she's off elsewhere.

well since you do tend to do crazy things beyond your control, she knows you're gonna get hurt eventually.

and you do.

when you get injured or hurt, you won't have to head to her office, since well... the nurse will come to you automatically.

though she'd be crying, fearing you were going to die or something dramatic.

"i'm so sorry s/o!! i should've ran quicker- don't leave me!!"

if it is serious and you end up blacking out, somebody else would have to give you medical attention since mikan would be sulking in the bathroom, washing her face over and over again.

she's touch-starved, but is always too shy and scared to ask for hugs.

whenever you guys are in assembly, she'll hold your hand and squeeze it. she relaxes herself knowing you're there, right next to her.

i’m falling down the V3 pit again myself so i have to ask, do you have any other ships or faves from V3? (also i thought you might like to know that my headcanon for kokichi and tenko is that they are terrible terrible petty besties)

other than saihara & ouma, my favorite characters are toujou (rip queen) hoshi (rip short king) and gonta (rip tall king)!!

i don't really have v3 ships aside from saiousai, but i also like saimatsu...! i think they're sweet, though i like it best when it's really emotionally complicated haha. if akamatsu lived, i think there would be MUCH more complicated feelings for saihara to unpack with regards to a person who gave him so much courage also betraying his trust... but they can work through it!! ougoku friendship is also VERY important to me A++

My Danganronpa Opinion Tier-list (With rankings, EX./10 and reasons why they're ranked that way below.) (I've only played the first two games, so the V3 ones might not be accurate.)

FAVOURITES:

Kiyotaka Ishimaru - AMAZING CHARACTER, I LOVE HIM SO MUCH, LITERALLY KIN HIM SO MUCH, love the VA, hated his death and trial. - 10/10

Mondo Owada - He's also the best, I love his design, his character, his VA, his motive, his trial, his execution was kinda.... BUT I STILL LOVE MONDO - 10/10

Sonia Nevermind - She's so funny and her ftes are great! So good and love her in trials. Great VA, sondam is awesome. - 9/10

Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu - Great Ch.Development after chp2 love him so much. - 9/10

Gundham Tanaka - I love him SO MUCH he's amazing and funny and his execution made me cry alot. Sondam for life - 9/10

36. Celestia Ludenburg - She's pretty cool, trash motive, lied about Taka. That's the reason she isn't higher. 5.9/10

37. Toko Fukawa - A bit creepy, weird, but I still like her. Glad she survived tho tbh. - 5.8/10

38. Tenko Chabashira - Idk her charcater, I just know her "degenerate male" thingy, which is... interesting... no hate tho - 5.7/10

39. Mukuro Ikusaba - Wish she was in THH longer! OMG FAKE-JUNKO WAS SO COOL! Didn't see enough of her to rate higher. - 5.6/10

40. Izuru Kamakura - Cool concept, overrated tho- 5.5/10

41. Junko Enoshima - Cool ch. shit motive. Killed my faves- 5.3/10

42. Imposter/"Byakuya" - Good in SDR2 but didn't see enough of him :( - 5.2/10

43. Usami/Monomi - Cute mascot but I skipped her ALL of her dialogue because she annoyed TF out of me. - 5.1/10

44. Tsumugi Shirogane - GREAT VA but, I kinda don't know what to think about her. - 5.1/10

Neutral:

45. Yasuhiro Hagakure - A bit of a silly-billy, I dunno how he survived. He's closer to like than dislike tho. 5/10

46. Kirumi Tojo - She has the same VA as Hiyoko. HOW. Anyways, talented VA, cool execution, wish we got to see more of her tho. 5/10

47. Monodam - Apparently not as bad at the other ones? Byakuyas VA- 5/10

Neutral-Dislike:

48. Angie Yonaga - PRETTY DESIGN, GREAT VA, still not sure about her tho tbh... 4.6/10

49. Mahiru Koizumi - Boring, annoying, complains alot tbh, had great potential which wasn't used well. - 4.4/10

50. Teruteru Hanamura - Kinda... interesting. Surprisingly humane motive. I actually prefer him to Mahiru now... 4.3/10 (changed to 4.5/10)

Dislike:

51. Miu Iruma - There's alot to say about this girl... uh... 4.2/10

52. Hiyoko Saionji - Insufferable. I hate her, WHINY AND ANNOYING, I skipped all her dialogue. 3/10

53. Hifumi Yamada - I hate him, but I put him in this category bc why not. Skipped all of his dialogue, he annoyed me so much. I ignored him. He killed Taka for no reason. 2.5/10 because he was helpful in one trial.

HATE:

All the Monokubs, except I forgot their names. Incest weirdos, no point in the whole thing. 2/10

Which Danganronpa do you think got dealt the worst by Localization?

I'd be lying if I didn't say Gonta. (though Angie's god changing from being a generic god, making her a mockery of religious folk, to Atua, a very specific god that real people actually worship, has some fucked up, arguably kinda racist implications.)

A small CW for discussing the R slur in this analysis/rant. I don't write it out, but I understand 100% if you don't want to read it.

Speaking in the third person is considered a cute quirk in Japan. When a Japanese author has a character speak in third person, they are usually trying to make the character appear cute and harmless, which absolutely fits Gonta.

However, most American (or culturally American) authors reserve that kind of third person talk is reserved either for cavemen, or neurodivergent characters, with the implication that the character in question is too dumb to have a proper grasp of English. (Abelism much?)

This fits everyone else's perception of Gonta, but not who he actually is as a character.

One of the main points of Ch4 is that the class (even characters Kodaka wants you to like, such as Kaito and Himiko) was wrong to treat Gonta like he was stupid, and that Kokichi, who you aren't meant to like (as a person. As an antagonist he does a decent job) at this point, was in the right. With the big twist of Ch6 coming up, in addition to the Ch5 reveal that people like Kaito and Kokichi can work together to a common goal, it's important to point out that your cast isn't as perfect or infallible as they appear.

Which is why it does such a disservice to have Gonta continue to speak in the third person in the English version.

Gonta isn't the first character to speak in the third person in Danganronpa, Ibuki does it too! But it doesn't affect Ibuki's characterization in the same way, since Ibuki's character isn't about wrongly being underestimated. If Ibuki comes across as slightly dumber, it isn't a disservice to the themes of the story.

Also, Ibuki's backstory doesn't evoke Cavemen in the western player's mind.

Some other changes around Gonta were made, notably that Miu does not actually say the R slur to him. The word is a step up from 'baka' in rudeness, so "moron" or "fucking idiot" would be closer to the original tone. Miu calls many people idiots, with Kaito and Kaede being the first to mind. Only Gonta gets the ableist slur treatment -_- (Which makes the fact that it was put in there even more heartbreaking for me.)

Even if you aren't meant to agree with Miu, this can subtly color your perceptions of Gonta. Also, Miu gets a lot of hate for this, which doesn't seem fair to me. Stan Miu.

The most infuriating thing about this is, there's another v3 character that speaks in the third person in Japanese. My queen, Tenko Chabashira. They changed how she referred to herself for the western audiences, when arguably keeping it the same would not have done her that much of a disservice to her character. (She's a comic relief character who says dumb shit. Having her seem a bit less cute and a bit more stupid to western audiences wouldn't affect her plotline that much. Some people would maybe get irrationally angry and say she's a strawman (or strawwoman! sorry Tenko.) for feminists, but Kiibo is right there.)

So the argument that the translators would have to put a lot of work in doesn't hold.

In order to adapt Gonta more accurately and have him seem cute like Kodaka intended, I propose that he has emoticons at the end of his sentences sometimes. (I am shot by a sniper rifle for this idea!)

Heres his canon first line (not counting pregame because fuck that)

"Oh! Sorry for scaring! Gonta scary-looking. Most people not wanna talk to Gonta when meeting for first time. So, like gentleman, Gonta say thank you! Thank you for talking to Gonta!"

and here's it with how I'd alter it.

"Oh! Sorry for scaring! I'm scary-looking. Most people not wanna talk to me when meeting for first time. :( So, like gentleman, I say thank you! Thank you for talking to Me! :)"

Like, he comes across different, huh? Even to my eye, it reads more like he's struggling with the language in the second one, while the first one not so much.

Kaito and the Saiouma ship actually benefit from the localization, but that is another topic for another day.

Tenko/Sonia headcanon batches. This is a crack pairing, you have my permission to go completely wild.

Alright preface this with Sonia and Tenko's Actual Canonical Interaction In Danganronpa Summer Camp, which I think is a pretty fantastic sum of how their relationship would work in general:

So, with this in mind:

The Sonia/Tenko dynamic is interesting because it's not too far off from the Sonia-Kazuichi dynamic (every game gets One character who has a crush and is. A Little Weird About It)

I would say the MAIN difference between these two is that Kazuichi acts like a servant Sonia can step on Towards Sonia. Whereas Tenko will let ANY GIRL step on her. NO QUESTIONS. ALL QUEENS. So where Kazuichi's affection comes with this really uncomfortable pressure from his projection of The Teen Het Beach Movie Tropes, Tenko's affection is just, like. How She Is. Sonia's not getting any special treatment.

And I think that'd be really interesting to Sonia!! Sonia strongly desires to be treated fairly, like the people around her, but as a Noble, it only ever occurs to her to lower herself to Commoner Status TM, not that the people around her should be raised up to gain the benefits she has lived with her whole life. She means well, but she's very sheltered, and her good intentions don't manifest in a socially meaningful way.

Ultimately, I think Sonia falls prey to the well-meaning but dubious "I want to be like other girls because I am inherently Not Like Other Girls." There's some internalized misogyny, and there's also a huge note of incidental self-centeredness - all, again, with good intentions! And I think seeing the way Tenko treats women and the potential inner battle of "I wanted to be treated like other girls but not like THIS" and having to undress what has led her to feel so put out by other people getting treated well could be a really valuable step to help Sonia grow as a person and as a leader.

And Tenko gets to talk to a cute girl!! WIN/WIN

Chapter One: The Family Curse

"Did you do it?"

Toya feels his legs turn to jelly as his father towers above him; his entire family is leering into his very soul, as if they're going to condemn him to Hell any second. He'd been summoned to his father's chambers, away from prying eyes, and was immediately ambushed by his entire family. They practically snatched him off his feet when they pulled him into the room, slamming the door shut and locking it tight.

"Did I do what?" The eldest prince gulps, feeling his palms get sweaty. Who knows what this is about. It could be that they found his hidden stash of wine that he'd stolen from the cellar. It could be that his page, Tenko, had ratted him out for skipping all of the meetings with his potential suitresses. It could be that Shoto had lost the gilded sword that originally belonged to Toya before it was decided he was unfit to be an heir. A million thoughts run through Toya's brain, filling his head with smoke and fog.

"You know you're supposed to report to the dungeon immediately when you feel the aura before the change. Were you out on a bender or were you deliberately careless?" Queen Rei mutters, approaching her husband's side. Toya blinks. "The change" was what they called the family curse. His curse. In truth, it was his father's fault. Enji Todoroki, who came from nothing, successfully seduced and wed Princess Rei, who was the sole surviving member of her royal bloodline. He did this by making a deal with a witch; once he became king, he would make sure the witch was granted a seat in court. However, he never held up his end of the bargain, and the witch cast a curse. His firstborn son would have dragon's blood. The warning signs were clear as day, but Enji insisted that the witch was a fraud; his ego whispered that he was able to woo the Princess without magic. Still, Toya began waking up with patches of jet black scales on his skin; his parents simply instructed him to pick them off, leaving him with reddened, painful blotches. When he turned thirteen, Prince Toya experienced his first change. The first change was excruciatingly painful, but as the years have passed, he's grown accustomed. It seems natural. Now, at twenty-two years old, Prince Toya Todoroki's dragon form is terrifying, and the King's advisor believes he's fully grown. At roughly twenty feet tall and forty feet long, the jet-black dragon has a deep, muted purple underbelly with wings to match, spanning forty feet. A pair of sleek, silver horns sit on his head while a row of silver spikes trails down his neck to the tip of his tail. According to the royal records, he is the only dragon known to spit blue flames. To others, the transformations seemed random, but Toya knows his triggers. Emotional overload: good and bad. Toya was a complicated child; his feelings were complicated. He always felt too much. It was relatively easy to tip the scales to extremes; he got intensely angry, overly excited, impossibly nervous. His father hated it; he loathed it. If it weren't for the curse, his emotional instability alone would've been enough for his father to discard his birthright. It was the excuse he told the public to avoid airing out the darkness of his past. Nonetheless, he's gotten better at controlling his emotions, and he has measures in place when he feels a change beginning.

"I'm...I didn't change last night," Toya stutters, confused. The king crosses his arms over his chest.

"That Takami stableboy found a deer herd this morning..."

'Keigo.'

He'd almost forgotten that secret. The most important secret of all: he was hooking up with the stableboy.

"Huh?" Toya stutters, too focused on his lover's name to properly process the accusing statement.

"The deer were completely massacred, eviscerated, and empty of blood, piled up in a heap about a mile east of the stable. Explain yourself," King Enji seethes.

"You think I did that?" Toya snorts, his eyebrows furrowing. The stares don't waver.

"Listen, if I wanted venison, I could've asked Tenko to get it for me," The prince shrugs.

"Not if you're speaking Draconian," Princess Fuyumi interjects, and Toya shoots her an annoyed look.

"Look, if it was me, then there wouldn't be any bodies left. Plus, dragon, not vampire. I wouldn't have drank the blood and left the meat," Toya insists, standing his ground. The royals grow silent, and a haze of uneasiness sweeps through the room. The queen breaks the silence:

"Well...if you're speaking the truth...we have another threat to deal with..."

Keigo Takami freezes as he finds himself pinned up against the wall with a sapphire-encrusted dagger held dangerously close to his throat. His hypnotizing golden eyes immediately become lost in the unwavering cerulean.

Everyone else in the kingdom had heard the siren's tune...everyone but Toya. Last summer, Keigo ran away from his abusive tribe of sirens, braving a torrential thunderstorm with clipped wings until he collapsed at the edge of the forest. When he woke up, he was in the Todoroki Family stables, being nursed back to health by the prince and his page. His first instinct was to start singing, but Keigo held his tongue. The horses needed someone to look after them, and Toya offered Keigo the job. It was a place to stay, so Keigo accepted. Everyone thought he was just a runaway. A normal human. Keigo kept the bone stumps of his wings hidden beneath bulky clothing and horrible posture, and he consistently clipped his wings. After all, his instinctual hunting season was exclusive to spring, so he never had to worry about blowing his cover...until now. Still, he has complete control of his physical appearance; his talons and fangs are retractable.

As the seasons passed, something blossomed between the prince and the stableboy, and they started meeting in secret. Tenko Shimura, Toya's servant, was the only one who knew about their secret escapades. But...in the back of Keigo's mind, something always haunted him. What if he accidentally sang? And so, he did the unthinkable. He made a deal. The witch took his wings...permanently. No more clipping needed; the bones were gone forever. In exchange, Toya was rendered immune to Keigo's siren song.

"What's the first thing you're supposed to do when you run into trouble?" Toya whispers menacingly as his eyes narrow.

"Tell you about it," Keigo croaks out with a half-hearted smile.

Toya abruptly backs up, releasing Keigo from his harsh grip, and calmly shoves the dagger in its sheath at his hip.

"You almost got me in trouble for something I didn't even do," Toya snaps, kicking an empty water bucket over as he sits down on a bale of hay.

"They thought you killed the deer?" Keigo blurts in surprise, and Toya puts his head in his hands.

"Something like that," He huffs, rubbing his eyes in exhaustion. Keigo tilts his head, as if he's listening.

"Tenko's keeping watch; don't worry. Dear old Dad thinks we're at the tailor's," Toya yawns before adding, "So. Whaddya think did that then?"

Keigo goes rigid, but Toya doesn't notice.

"Maybe there's something in the woods?" He offers, trying to sound oblivious.

"The scary, forbidden forest. Crawling with monsters the likes of which you've never seen before," Toya gasps sarcastically before a smug smirk spreads across his face.

"Nothing we couldn't hunt down," The prince sneers, and Keigo shifts uncomfortably as he slowly sits beside him.

"What's wrong, Keigo? Won't you climb on my valiant steed and help me catch the beast?" Toya whispers in Keigo's ear, his tone changing from mocking to playful. His arm wraps around Keigo as he plants a gentle kiss on the side of his neck. The gesture almost makes Keigo feral, but he swallows back his desires. His hunting habits aren't the only thing that changes during spring. Slowly, Toya traces up to Keigo's jaw, each kiss feeling like lightning. Breath hisses through Keigo's nostrils before he decides to give in...just a little bit. Without warning, he pounces on Toya, roughly kissing him and wrapping his arms around him tightly. A startled noise muffles in the prince's throat; he's always been the one who's taken the lead. However, the moment Keigo digs his unusually sharp fingernails into his shoulders, he melts into the kiss, giving in. Toya's eyelids flutter shut as Keigo's tongue traces across every inch of his mouth. The kisses become rapid and hasty, their hot breath hanging heavy in the air.

"Maybe you can climb on mine this time," Keigo mumbles teasingly between lip locks, and the lewd offer makes Toya weak.

"What's gotten into you?" Toya slurs as his hands run through his lover's hair. He keeps his breathing steady, determined to not set off a change. If he concentrates on his breathing, he can ward it off through his intense feelings. It's the only reason he hasn't transformed in front of Keigo.

"Something in the air, I guess," Keigo devilishly grins, not lying in the slightest. His fingers greedily fumble through the buttons in Toya's satin shirt.

"Fuck, are you really doing this? Are you really gonna f-" Toya stammers, but Keigo shuts him up with a kiss.

"Only if you're okay with switching roles," The stableboy mutters as he pulls away. Toya blinks, trying to sort his muddled thoughts. Could he do it? Could he give up control? Could he lose the chase? A Cheshire Cat smile spreads across his face as he suppresses an involuntary draconic growl.

"Only if you win," He smugly retorts before he practically rips the tunic off of Keigo's body. Before he can get the upper hand, Keigo's all over him again. He straddles Toya, subtly grinding on him as he sucks on his bottom lip, hands ghosting over his pale skin.

"Fuck~" Toya moans involuntarily at the stimulation.

TAP! TAP! TAP!

"AHEM!"

Immediately, Keigo scrambles to lean against one of the stall doors while Toya deliriously blinks, breathless and dazed. Tenko stands at the entrance, holding a pitchfork.

"If you guys are gonna fuck, I'm not keeping watch anymore," He mutters flatly. Toya clears his throat and begins buttoning his shirt back up as Keigo pulls his tunic back on.

"I'll come back tonight?" Toya whispers.

"It's a date," Keigo winks.
