Hakuoki - Record of Curious Tales: Katana and Samurai #5, Kashuu Kiyomitsu
Honestly, I felt super unmotivated to translate today, to the point where I really did think about skipping doing something this week. Feeling more than a little out of sorts though I'm almost certain that it's because of the weather... as I do abysmally whenever the temperature starts to increase.
Anyway, this was originally published in 電撃Girl’s Style 2016年3月号... feeling too annoyed to check this beyond making sure that the names used were correct right now.
Hakuoki - Record of Curious Tales: Katana and Samurai #5, Kashuu Kiyomitsu
Translation by KumoriYami
Eighth month of the first year of Genji——. During the Ikedaya Incident during the 6th month, Okita Souji was injured and vomited blood after fighting with Kazama, and had to rest in his futon while he recovered. In the same month, when the Akebonotei Incident and the Kinmon Incident [Hamaguri Gate Rebellion] occurred, he could only stay at headquarters on standby so he spent the time leisurely/not doing anything. In the eight month, when Souji had almost recovered and wanted to return to the troop, he disovered a major problem——the tip of the katana he used during the Ikedaya Incident had been partiall damaged.
"The way this is, it can't be used anymore..." As he gazed at the unsheathed blade, Souji sighed and muttered to himself. Damage to the blade could be repaired through polishing and the length of the sword could be changed to a preferred length through forging, but if the tip of the sword was missing, nothing could be done.. "I actually... really liked this katana." Souji looked at the damaged tip of the sword and recalled when he first received this katana. It was when Souji and Kondou were still in Edo, and with everyone else from Shiekan when they were preparing participate in the Roshigumi recruitment for maintaining the law and order in Kyoto.
On that day, everyone had been busy preparing to leave for Kyoto, except for Souji, who had nothing to do, and gazed thoughtlessly at the sky outside of the dojo. "Souji, Souji. Come here for a moment." Upon hearing that voice, Souji turned around voice, the head office turned around and saw Kondou Shusai, the former head of Tennins Rishin-ryu, who was now referred to as Dai-sensei. "Shusai-sensei, what is it?" As Souji walked over, Shusai kept an eye in the direction of the dojo, and lowered his voice to ask: "Actually, it's about Isami... have you heard about the katana he's planning to bring to Kyoto?" "Kondou-san's katana? He was happily showing me that he obtained a Kiyomaro blade." "Hmm, Kiyomaro Minamoto , who is also called the Masamune of Yotsuya? That's a truly good thing. "Yes, that's why Kondou-san was very happy." "I see... Kiyomaru, is it...." Shusai nodded his head in acknowledgement as if he had shaken off a heavy burden, and then spoke to Souji. "By the way, Souji. What are you going to do for your sword?" "Mine? The one I have now is fine, and as long as my swordsmanship is good, all blades are the same." "No, no, it's not like that. A samurai needs to have the appearance of a samurai, but there will be times when people look at their swords, right? That's why it's necessary to wear a sword that isn't embarrassing, not to mention, having a good sword will be even more useful in actual combat. After speaking, Shusai handed Souji the katana with a black sheath that was in his hands. "You can take this with you." "This is...?" "Nn, this is my farewell gift from me for you, Souji." As he spoke, Shusai grabbed the hilt of the sword with his right hand an unsheathed the blade. The blade shone brightly in the sunlight. "Kashuu Kiyomitsu… I chose the work of the 6th generation Kiyomitsu, who is also commonly known as "Beggar Kiyomitsu." The blade has a shallow curve and is two shaku and four sun long, and is slightly longer than the standard length. Since you're good at stabbing, it should be perfect for Souji, right?" Souji gazed at the blade with undisguised joy in his eyes. "The undulating patterns and cross-eyes in the design are also quite nice... It looks like it will be able to kill very well [I guess? I was really confused with the first part of this.]." "Nn. This will absolutely do so." As if the two were thinking of the same situation, they both smiled with excitement. "But, is it really okay for me to receive this? This.. was prepared for Kondou-san, right? I think it'd still be better to give it to him..." " What, so you already realized it… Well, it's fine, Isami seems to have found his own sword. After all, it's a sword that he's entrusted his life to so it's best for him to personally satisfied with it, so I cant interfere from the side." "I understand. Then, I'll bring it to Kyoto instead of Kondou-san/in place of Kondou-san, I'll bring it to Kyoto!" "Is that alright?" "No problem!" As Souji received Kashuu Kiyomits from Shusai, he smiled like a child and kept gazing at it for a long time.
"...Shusai-sensei, it really could kill very well." Souji returned Kiyomitsu, whose tip had been broken, to its sheath and pondered carefully. In order for him to return to active duty, he needed to prepare a new sword. What should he do for that sword…. In actuality, he wanted the same sword as Kondou but it was too expensive and he couldn't afford to buy it… A few days later, Souji chose a katana named Yamato no Kami Yasusada. The reason was that it resembled Kondou's Kotetsu.

Tennin volant, Japon, c. 18th century
The apsara in mid-flight plays the tsuzumi two-headed drum. She is richly dressed in pleated and undulating clothes. It wears a very elaborate thyara in openwork and gilded copper, embellished with ribbons and pendants. The Tennins are divine beings who accompany the stay of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas by dancing and playing music.

Natsu no Guuwa by Yamagishi Ryouko (1976)
Tumblr media
I'll spare you the long and winded road that got me to Yamagishi Ryouko's Tennin Karakusa (天人唐草) one shot collection... I was supposed to find the bunkoban edition of it, but because I did my research half-assedly, I got the scans from the 1980 collection with the same title. I was bummed that I didn't get the one shot I was looking for (which was 狐女 (Kitsunejo-Fox Lady, 1981) btw), and was skimming through the one shots in the 1980 book in mild disappointment. The last page of one of the stories caught my eye, because of the text taking up the bottom of the page and my brain going "Huh? Isn't that Hiroshima Peace Memorial?". When I read the first line of what's written on that page, I almost fell off my chair. I KNEW what it was. It was a poem by the great Turkish poet Nazım Hikmet, Hiroshima Child (Kız Çocuğu, 死んだ女の子, 1956).
Now, I had to read this one shot. Natsu no Guuwa (夏の寓話 - Summer Fable) was first published in the 1976 August issue of Seventeen magazine, and later compiled in a bunch of books I'm too lazy to list here. None of them are available as e-books anyway, so it wouldn't be of much use... I'll revisit the list when I buy one of them, because I know I will buy a copy for myself.
The story takes place in Hiroshima during a hot, hot summer. University student Sumio has to spend his summer home sitting and taking care of fish and birds, and getting bored to death. He comes across a girl in the park who never plays with the other kids and who is always alone. The two get closer, however, the girl is acting strange and can't even remember her own name. Sumio tries to figure out her circumstances, only to find that she is the ghost of a little girl who died during the Hiroshima bombing in 1945.
I couldn't find any background info on this, but I'm almost positive that this is a manga adaptation of Nazım Hikmet's poem, and the poem is not there as a decoration. The imagery used in the poem, the little girl knocking on doors (windows, in this case), her burning and turning into ash, is weaved into the story in a most striking way. It's not telling the real-life story that made Nazım (yes, we call him by his first name) write that poem, but a whole new story based on the poem itself. I LOVED Yamagishi's take on this literary work, and felt elated to see a compatriot in a manga by an artist I respect a lot.
Tumblr media
It is also in one tiny panel, but there is a guy criticizing the younger generation for being "apolitical" in this manga (see: しらけ世代), which I found interesting. Is Yamagishi condoning people who belong to that generation? Does she criticize the youth dor being apolitical and not caring about their country? Or is she trying to show that despite appearances, they care in their own way? As I'm not Japanese and I wasn't even alive in 1976, I lack the proper background to make a sound assessment on that. But still, it made me aware such concerns also existed in Japan. Isn't this the beauty of reading older manga? They make you think about stuff you'd normally wouldn't think about with a single bubble.
I canot stress it enough, but seeing what Nazım's poem made Yamagishi feel was a very unexpected yet great experience for me. This one shot will hold a special place in my heart.

So between (the visual novel) Touchstarved’s Kuras ([kəˈraʃ] …?) and Genshin Impact’s Diluc (default outfit), Kaeya (alt outfit), Albedo, Fischl (default & alt outfit), Rosaria (alt outfit), Neuvillette, Yun Jin, Yaoyao…
Do I just really like characters with symmetric outfits, lots of metallic details, and a black/white/other colour/gold accent colour scheme (Yun Jin and Yaoyao don’t quite fit the pattern but their outfits are really colourful and cute...)
Yun Jin’s symmetry and values work well with the colour scheme of purple/pink (analogous) + red/yellow/blue (triad) accents,
And Yaoyao’s outfit just looks so soft and cuddly like a plushie with a bunch of warm analogous colours (yellow-green/yellow/orange/gold?) & dark neutral colours (dark-brown/white). A lot of shapes are repeated (sleeves and tassel are both white-to-beige; eyes, bells, and pouch are all round with warm colours)

As for Inazuma characters, I’d say I like Kokomi and Yoimiya. But I wish they pushed the kimono part for Kokomi more and not have her look like she’s got a frilly swimsuit with thigh highs. If she’s known as a “Divine Priestess” and has water and dragon themes (not to be confused with Neuvillette as the Hydro Dragon), and one of her attacks is called 儀来羽衣 (Girai Hagoromo) in Japanese, hagoromo referring to “the kimono worn by celestial beings (tennin) that grants them the ability to fly, and thus ascend to heaven” (Elemental Burst trivia wiki page)— Then it’d be nice if her outfit looks more like a tennin’s.
As for Sumeru, I like Layla’s design (black/white/blue/gold again huh) but… if I didn’t know any better, I would’ve thought she’s a Knight of Favonius. However, according to this Reddit post, it seems Layla means night in Arabic, and Layla is the Arabic equivalent of Little Red Riding Hood? I wonder if that served for an inspiration behind her character’s concept. Aside from that, Kaveh’s design looks nice and uncluttered if not too pale. According to his page’s etymology section, “Kaveh (Persian: کاوه) is a name of Persian origin which is used as both a given name and a surname. One famous figure with this name is Kaveh the Blacksmith, a figure recorded in the Shahnamah who led an uprising against the serpent Zahhak, also known in Avestan as Azhi Dahāka and was the inspiration for Azhdaha.”

Bittersweet Memories
Tumblr media
Summary: Sometimes, you have to go back to the place it all began, to relive what once was. Pairing: Baek Juho x OC Genre: Angst, One-Shot, Collab/Event Tropes: Fantasy!AU, Faun!idol, tennyo!OC, strangers to lovers to strangers Word Count: 1.3K Contains: circular storytelling, flashbacks (anything italicized is a flashback), one mention of suggestive content (no details), lots of angst A/N: Fantasy, I apologize in advance for what I've done to the poor sweetheart. This was what instantly came to mind when presented with the Mocha Madness event. Also, Ceres is a likeness to the titular character of an anime I adored way back in middle school titled Ayashi No Ceres.
"Can I get a mochaccino, Cupid?" The faun man orders as calmly as usual, adding, "Make it a double. I need a pick-me-up."
After placing the coins on the counter, Zuho makes his way to his usual table. Pulling his chair out, he sits down, carefully swinging his tail behind him to avoid sitting on it. Placing an elbow on the dark mahogany table, he rests his chin on his palm as he stares at the empty chair in front of him, zoning out into his own little world.
"Can I try the house coffee? It's my first time here."
Hearing a shy but angelic voice, he lifts his head to see her. More beautiful than most creatures who frequent the cafe, her long, healthy black hair flowing freely down her back and her beautiful blue silk kimono makes her appear heavenly to the lone faun sitting nearby. Seeing Zuho's gaze on the newcomer, Cupid points the lady in his direction and suggests him as a kind regular.
Thanking Cupid and paying for her drink, the captivating stranger approaches Zuho and asks whether she could sit with him. Moving his latte closer to himself, he motions to the chair as words betray him by failing to leave his lips entirely.
"Thank you. I hear you're a regular. I'm new around here and qould love a guide, if you're so willing."
"Sure, I would be happy to help. My name is Zuho."
Shining a smile that can cure any ailments, she responds, "Nice to meet you, Zuho. My name is Cerea. I'm a tennin - or a tennyo, more specifically - and I've wanted to roam earth for a bit now but was scared. It's nice to know somebody is willing to help lead me in good directions."
"A tennyo - no wonder you're so beautiful. I'm a faun, as you may be able to guess." He gestures around himself to show off his horns, tail, and hooves. "Although I'm often confused for a satyr since we're distant cousins in looks."
As he learns more about Ceres, he finds that her beauty goes beyond her style and appearance. Feeling her kindness in every word, Zuho befriends her quickly, establishing the next time to meet.
"Here you go, Zu." Cupid places the glass mug in front of the faun, bringing him back to reality momentarily.
"Thanks, Cupid. I really need it today."
Patting the man on the back, Cupid returns to the counter with hopes that the strength of the drink will help his friend return to his usual chipper self.
As he takes a sip, Zuho remembers the day he began dating Ceres - a time now as bittersweet in his mind as the drink hitting his tongue.
For the first time, they meet outside of the cafe. Bringing Zuho to a nice, calm meadow outside of the city, Ceres beams over the idea of enjoying one another's company out in nature.
Most of the date, they sit next to each other on the grass silently, gazing at the flowers swaying in the light wind or viewing the clouds floating lazily against the azure sky. After a while, Zuho turns to admire Ceres.
Feeling his gaze after a few minutes, Ceres turns towards him. His loving eyes bring a soft smile to her lips. Her dark hair contrasting the colorful surroundings, Zuho brushes a loose strand behind her shoulder, letting it sway in the wind alongside the flowers.
"Ceres," He starts, his gaze shifting around her. "Would you like to date?"
"I thought you'd never ask." Ceres leans in, cupping her partner's face to kiss his nose in acceptance.
Putting the cup back onto the table, Zuho feels the tears welling up in his throat. Bending forward and placing his forehead next to the glass, the faun's tail swipes furiously behind him as his emotions overwhelm him. Looking on from the counter, Cupid feels the pang of heartbreak seep into his heart, remembering how well the couple got along until yesterday's incident. As Zuho lets his tears fall onto the wood, a montage of happy moments runs through his mind, only to be squashed by the memory of yesterday.
Kissing feels like visiting heaven. Her hugs are a warm embrace, even on the coldest winter days. A smile in his direction brightens his whole day. Her voice rings in his ears like his favorite bard's most uplifting tune, her laugh like the twinkling bells that ding in the markets.
Zuho is head over hooves for Ceres.
She feels the same way - it's obvious to everyone around them, even if she never says so. Heavens forbid, she even debates herself silently on whether or not to give him her celestial robes to take him as her husband. As far as anyone can see, this tennyo and faun are a representation of the truest form of love. The bards have written songs based on their shows of affection, the scholars have noted their actions for future generations to look upon as proof of love's existence. As innocent as the two of them are, planning to propose to one another in a worthwhile way without letting the other catch on to their schemes, the entire city supports them at this point. Everyone felt their love brighten the town.
It was all going splendidly until one day ago - the day tragedy struck. As Ceres bathes in a secluded pond, preparing herself to hand over her robes, but those exact robes are stolen from the branch she placed them upon. In a massive fit of jealousy, a lonely goblin learned about the tennin conditions for marriage and took it upon himself to snatch the opportunity to secure an eye-catching bride.
Despite outrage from everyone in the city, Ceres cannot disobey the laws of her kind. Bawling her eyes out, she begrudgingly follows the goblin to his home. Zuho, upon learning of the travesty, follows, losing sanity as he begs and pleads at their feet. He offers up anything and everything he owns to the goblin in a desperate attempt to earn the hagoromo for himself, but the goblin doesn't budge - rather, he enjoys seeing the faun dirtying his fur to beg him for the item.
He slams the door to his small abode in Zuho's face with an evil smile. Unable to muster the energy to return to the city, Zuho stays on the ground for hours and hears them finalize the marriage. With that final step complete, Zuho feels his heart snap into a million pieces, falling upon the loose dirt in front of the home.
As his tears slow, he wonders whether he stalled too long to ask Ceres to marry him. At this point, he feels as if the gods must be spiting him for some reason. Wondering what he could've done to deserve the torture he received, he lifts his head from the table to see a cookie sitting on a napkin next to his drink. He looks over to Cupid, who is busy cleaning mugs. Silently thanking his friend, he wipes away the remaining tears and takes a big bite of the cookie.
Although certain he hasn't had one before, the cookie tastes oddly familiar - sweet with touches of familiar magic mixed into the cinnamon and sugar. He closes his eyes as he takes another bite, savoring the flavor in an attempt to identify the source of the familiarity.
Suddenly, an all too familiar voice graces his ears. As if he traveled back in time, he opens his eyes to find Ceres talking to Cupid at the counter, in the same blue silk from the first time he laid eyes on her. Even the cookie has disappeared from his hand, and the mocha is replaced by a latte.
"Can I try the house coffee? It's my first time here."

Leonard's Parents
I headcanon that Repo Mantis is Leonard's biological father. I and the reason that Leonard doesn't look like other ogres because he is a halfling (half yōkai, half human) and Repo had an affair with Boss Beverly (which I also headcanon to be Leonard's biological mother) before he was mutated. He only left because at the time, yōkai and humans did not get along. I headcanon that Repo's real name is Manfred "Manny" Ryan. Leonard got his last name from his step father, Joseph Ray Tennin before he died.
