Yokai: The Art of Shigeru Mizuki. Published 10/31/2023 by Drawn & Quarterly.
Shigeru Mizuki is no stranger to the supernatural and its portents. Kitaro and Tono Monogatari reimagined the obscure folktales of his youth, bringing them to life with whimsy. Mizuki the cartoonist certainly left an indelible mark on comics as world literature. Mizuki the fine artist, on the other hand, rounds out the full scope of his fascination with the otherworldly and fantastic, bringing these worlds to life in robust color.
Yokai: The Art of Shigeru Mizuki showcases his expertise of not only folklore, but celebrates him as a naturalist. Elements of Mizuki’s lush compositions—flora, fauna, and everything in between—showcase his mastery of form and love for nature. These popular renderings of a disappearing, rural Japan are his contribution to the preservation of a cultural heritage that would have otherwise been forgotten. The grotesque realism central to his body of work is offset by the ingenuity of his fancy for the macabre. Pieces in this deluxe, full-color edition call to mind the playful pop-sensibility of Maurice Sendak informed by the technical prowess of traditionalists like Dürer and Doré. And like any other Mizuki classic, each oeuvre is a unique snapshot of spirit, human or otherwise, in constant transition.
Yokai: The Art of Shigeru Mizuki includes supplementary writing by acclaimed Mizuki scholar and translator Zack Davisson.

Courtly Hunter (Hunter Archetype)
Tumblr media
For good or ill, the concept of nobility has been a major influence on our idea of leisure. After all, when you have the resources to not worry about your day to day needs, you do need to find ways to fill your time.
It is from this need for fulfillment that hunting for sport comes from. Participants might have hunted before they became landed gentry, or they might simply picked it up as a way to test their mastery over the world around them. (and maybe disprove jokes and rumors about their lack of hunting prowess among the common folk).
Of course, such sport activities did also give rise to dubiously-sporting activities such as fox hunts, or importing exotic beasts just to kill them, so we can be thankful that not everything about those activities became part of more widespread leisure activities in the modern era.
Today we are looking at such a noble hunter sort. They might be a noble who enjoys the hunt, or they might be a royal huntsmaster in the employ of the same. Regardless, their combination of courtly knowledge and wilderness savvy make them sort of a bridge between civilization and the wilds.
This is especially true when we consider the unique powers and abilities of their animal companion as well, which we will see below. There are some parallels between this archetype and the chameleon hunter, but they remain very different from each other.
In any case, a courtly hunter promises to be effective in both the wilds and noble court.
Naturally, this flavor of hunter is much more adept at social graces compared to their peers.
Whether it be a quirk of fate, or a deliberate action on part of the hunter, their animal companions are blessed with a possessing nature spirit, granting them much greater intelligence, though they still cannot speak. This greater intellect does mean they can behave much more independently than other companions.
Given their focus on civilization, these hunters only gain a selection of animal foci from the base list, replacing the rest with new ones more keyed to their social interests. The ones the archetype keeps include bat, falcon, mouse, and owl.
The new foci for this archetype include the beaver, who grants the blessing of craftsmanship; the chameleon, who helps disguise their identity; the eagle, which improves your force of personality directly; the fox, which proves a cunning liar; the frilled lizard, lending you some of it’s intimidation; the octopus, blessing you with incredible flexibility in tight places and restraints; the thieving hands of the raccoon; and finally the beautiful performative skill of the songbird.
However, having a mighty beast following you around in noble circles is bound to turn some heads, even with “domesticated” animal companions like dogs. So, these hunters learn magics to turn their companions into smaller forms suitable for easy carry and concealment, and might be mistaken for an exotic pet. These forms might range from a juvenile member of the same species, or a much smaller related species, such as a small bat, or a lapdog. With a touch, the hunter can shift them between forms.
Thanks to their intelligence and bond with their master, these companions can tap into some of the knowledge of the hunter when performing skills all on their own.
The first time a courtly hunter turns their exotic pet tarantula into a web tyrant spider and sics it on an assassin, it’s a shock, but whether it be to confuse foes or to add to their companion’s abilities when playing scout, these hunters learn how to give them smaller forms that change their species, gaining the associated abilities. Over time, they learn to master more and more forms.
Not quite as good at working together directly with their companion in combat, this archetype has the advantage of a companion that is smart enough to take orders directly rather than relying on the trick system, and can serve as a skilled ally in the right circumstances, and even as a scout that is more durable than a familiar in the same role, thanks to the smaller and multiple alternate forms they gain access to. I’d recommend a stealthy social build that prefers to strike from ambush.
While it is almost certainly not always the case, I imagine that those of these hunters that remain true to the druidic nature of their magic might serve as an envoy of nature, having the ear of royalty to help them understand how to live alongside nature, preventing overhunting and exploitation of resources, as well as bringing the missives of fey and nature spirits and beings directly to the rulers of the land.
Dryroot came into the service of the Countess ten years ago, and in that time, the little vine leshy has done much to improve the care given to the surrounding wilderness. They have also proved to be an excellent aid to the royal spymaster, their companion, a tortoise named Bura, able to take on the form of birds and keeping an eye on key individuals.
Sandevor is reknowned as the best hunter in the land, frightened by no beast. However, a different predator now stalks the streets of his beloved home, and the king is calling upon all his resources to find the source of these bizarre killings that leave behind boneless corpses. The culprit: a horrific eye-palmed creature called tenome.
Ever since infiltrating the wicked emperor’s home city, the party have noticed curious sightings of ordinary small animals staring at them from the distance. Little do they know that they are all the same creature, the true form of which is the intelligent wolf companion of the emperor’s huntsman, who also serves as leader of his secret police.

NAME: Tenome
RARITY: ★★★★☆
THREAT LEVEL: ★★★☆☆ | Strong, fast, and deadly, though their preference for the deceased can be exploited.
HABITAT: Almost always found within the bounds of cemeteries, especially ones in more remote locations, such as Sunset Spire.
DESCRIPTION: Very little is known about the tenome, but they’re clearly demonic in nature. They look like aged humanoid creatures with eyes on the palm of their hands instead of in their skulls. They hold their palms out in order to see, though even while doing so, their eyesight is thought to be quite poor. Tenome have a craving for fresh human bones, and like to wander around cemeteries at night looking for their prey. Upon feeding, they suck the bones, blood, and muscles out of the body, leaving nothing but the skin of their victim behind. Though they have a preference for deceased humans and humanoids, they will happily chase down and devour any living thing they come across. Tenome tend to be a far less common sight than ghouls and other cemetery-dwellers, but sightings do happen occasionally in Wicked’s Rest. A small group of them have been reported in the lower levels of Sunset Spire.
ABILITIES: While tenome do possess eyes in the palms of their hands that allow them limited vision, their vision still isn’t great. To make up for this, they possess increased speed and an excellent sense of smell in order to find their prey, and exceptional strength to help them dig it up—or hold it down, if the meal is still alive.
WEAKNESS: Though strong and fast, they can be dispatched by normal means. If a person is able to outrun a tenome long enough to reach a highly populated area, the tenome will give up the chase. It can be distracted with fresh decomposition. If the person is able to cut off or injure the arms of the tenome this will severely limit the creature’s ability to chase you as its first instinct will be to regain its eyesight.

(Slight TW for slight blood and gore??)
This was gonna be an October video, but with no response from the voice actor, I'm assuming he's busy and thought I wasn't doing a video anymore since I did say I was considering not doing the video at least without voice acting. Which is my fault, I shouldn't have had doubts about voice acting after asking. I just didn't want to ask too much, y'ah know.
Anyways here's what the update would have had(minus the speed paint)
This is some sprite edits of final designs of As Thin As Paper characters (made them sprite edits for easier reference of out of battle sprites in game) along with the idea I had for each one. (5 instead of 6 because Lanter's design is honestly being a bitch to me)
Tumblr media
First in the list is the first npc you encounter in Super Paper Roblox, Aaron O’ Nare. Which has given the corrupted name of “The Wandering Narrator” for obvious reasons. Since he was the first concept art made for this game, there wasn’t really a set and stone idea of where the story of the game will go. There was no plan of story, gameplay, only a basic plan of the concept. Starting off there was just gonna be a corrupted design of all named npcs, there was no plan of which ones will actually be used in game. So his concept was able to be a little bit more “fluid”. Basically laying down the foundation for the other concept arts. Even though he’s kinda one of the more basic ones, with just skinnier bodies, torn skin, teeth and longer limbs, Now for the idea of how he was sort of glitched and turned into this design Starting back when the original Super Paper Roblox was deemed unplayable and locked up, the glitches and bugs target Aaron first. He was easy to mess with. His only role was to narrate. But what happens when the glitches and bugs decide to take that away from him? Withdrawals start to set in. anywhere he went, he tried to narrate the other npc’s lives, but the bugs kept that satisfaction of doing something he loves away from him. All the torture. Nothing but rejection and insanity. All until, something in his head just snaps. And now, after all the breaking down from the glitches and bugs that plagues the land, he’s nothing… he can’t narrate, no one and nothing will let him. He can’t take it. To the point of violence.
Basic idea is that in the first chapter to keep the boss, Aaron, from attacking you early or at all, you have to keep him narrating your travels in at least the first chapter. With him wandering and stalking you, protagonist, throughout the first area until the end where you’ll be in the first boss fight. Pretty easy though, sense he IS supposed to be the first boss out of the 12 total bosses.
Tumblr media
Next up on the list, is Scriptliss and the crystal that keeps him immortal. These two were one of the funnest ones to design. Like he’s an immortal and the crystal is what makes him immortal. He’s essentially a god. How could I not go all out? The main inspiration of these two in particular is the Yokai, Tenome, with the eyes on Scriptliss’ palms. The inspiration probably would have probably made more sense with Otempes, since the Tenome is an old man spirit, but hey it wasn’t his time on the mauling table. Anyways, it also made sense to make Cogen like a sort of core that keeps Scriptliss alive and together even after “dying”, since that crystal is already holding a part of his soul inside.
How they ended up in this situation was simple. The glitches and bugs got a hold of all of Scriptliss’ insecurities; his regret of his behavior in Paper Roblox 2, and his worries and regret of what happened to Tess Aract. Basically, blinding him with flashbacks and flashforwards, until he is made to fall into some gears, tearing his body up. Meanwhile, Cogen gets into an altercation with Aaron that ends with Cogen almost shattering for taking over the narration during chapter 8 of the original game. One thing led to another, and Cogen basically replaced Scriptliss’ spine to keep him together.
They’re supposed to be in the boss of chapter 2, so they’re a bit harder than Aaron but still easy. Since he is named “Blind Immortal”, you can probably guess that the sort of idea of the gimmick of chapter 2 is to sneak around and try to not run as much to avoid an early boss battle. Along with not running alot, you will also have to stay still if they have a palm up. Like a t-rex, they see movement better than anything else.
Tumblr media
this doll of the hour is our next victim on the surgery table. Honestly, with some of the designs, you can tell where the steam dies a bit here and there. Especially for Wiscara, but oh well. Basically, sharp scissor limbs accompanied by a starved torso and stitches especially over the mouth. Constant pain, but no noise can come out. That’s all. I honestly feel like a dick to Wiscara for doing this to her.
Before she became like this, she and her brother, Artrist, were running away from a certain late game character that will not be named yet. Getting caught and attacked, ending with Wiscara being a sole survivor but being limbless and almost fully butterflied. With the help of one of the pumpkin head cousins, she was helped. But the help made her sewn up, doll style, from the glitches. Practically making her lose her humanity, yet still tortured by the visuals of the death of her brother.
She’s gonna be the 3rd boss in the lineup. Though the gimmick of her chapter has not been thought of yet. Probably hiding. No ideas in my head at the moment. not everything is set in stone yet.
Tumblr media
Going a bit out of order, because something about her design in her concept art was just yelling to me. Just… something. Anyways, it was obvious to have Pink I as a giant fucking eye. Though her design couldn’t just stop at that. So basically, one thing led to another and screw it; iron maiden and a pinch of venus fly trap and frog. It just felt like something she would be. Just her original game personality just gave a certain E N E R G Y. I mean, it has been kinda implied in the original game that her answer to most things is nukes, so.
With how she got like this. Out of everyone, she was the most willing to be changed. She didn’t mind. It gave her more power to mess with, so why not. There weren't really any insecurities that weren’t hidden well, that the glitches and bugs can get. So, she couldn’t be broken down like the others. It only was really after she saw how the others transformed when she wanted in on the action.
Basically, this is what happens when you want to make a horror fan game, based on glitches corrupting others using insecurities, but a character in the original game doesn’t really have any possible insecurities you can find and pull out and the one core aspect of them that is that they basically have a wild trigger finger.
Tumblr media
Back in order. The final design we have today is for Otempus. Not for Boxdria though yet, she has a 3d sprite. Anyways, with the missed opportunity to use Scriptliss’ Inspiration here, his design is still rather good. With Boxrida basically turning wilder than in game and almost eating him. It was either him or her. Best friend against best friend. And as you can probably tell in the concept art, regrettably to him, Otempus ended up winning. No back design for his final design, because I was a tired wimp, lmao.
His corruption reasoning was already mostly explained, so we can just move onto his chapter. He’s the chapter 4 boss, though he isn’t really one for fighting. In fact, he is supposed to be a sort of temporary ally in the chapter, helping with puzzles and maybe giving a little help in battles. Only being an actual boss enemy at the end of the chapter when the glitches take Boxdria’s soul and make Otempus fight you. Also, if you end up not killing him, you might or might not still have him as an ally after his boss fight at the end of his chapter.
______________________________________________________________
In the future, I might make non sprite designs of these characters that will be the model for in-battle sprites, thou that will only come after I get each character their final design.

phantom express fans dinner's ready eat up
after I read all of the yokais that the phantom express is based off of, I got a pretty good grasp on what the backstories for them all could be
(REMINDER THAT SPECTER IS CANONICALLY NON-BINARY‼️‼️)
blind specter is based off of a tenome, which is an old man with no eyes on his face but rather on each of his hands respectively. the yokai is created from the spirits of blind men who were robbed and murdered by thugs. in folk tale, a man is attacked by a monster with no eyes on their face but rather their hands. he fled to a nearby inn and told the innkeeper abt what happened, to which the innkeeper told him that he had seen a blind man robbed and killed in the same field. as the man was dying, he cried out;
"If only I could have had once glace at their faces! If I only had eyes that worked — even if only on the palms of my hands…!"
and his resentment upon his death caused him to be reborn as a yokai with the eyes on his hands just like he had asked for; the tenome.
as for the conductor, he's based off of the gashadokuro. the gashadokuro is a giant skeleton created by black magic out of souls of those who died and didn't receive a funeral (soldiers who died on battlefields and/or those who starved to death). they die angered and pained, and the more their bodies rot/the longer it's been since they died, the more they hate the living and turn into a supernatural force. hundreds of these victims gather to form this giant skeleton. they can't be killed since they're too big and powerful, however, they continue to exist until their hatred has run out. since these yokai are much less common in more recent times bc ppl are dying less, it's likely the conductor has been around for a very long time. over 1000 years ago, the father of a famous sorceress was killed and she continued his cause by using black magic to turn dead soldiers into the giant skeleton; gashadokuro. perhaps the conductor had a daughter during his lifetime.
onto the lollipop ghouls, they are based off of multiple yokais. their long necks came from mikoshi nyudo and rokurokubi. the detachment of their heads came from nukekubi, which is connected to rokurokubi. mikoshi nyudo linger around bridges at night, pretending to be wandering priests or monks. however, when someone looks up at a mikoshi nyudo, their neck grows abnormally longer and the person who looked up at them stumbles and falls backward and gets their throat torn out by the mikoshi nyudo's teeth. many are shocked and die, but there is a certain way to trick them.
the rokurokubi are ordinary women during the day and long-necked monsters at night who have done something bad, such as a sin against god or nature, and have been turned into rokurokubi as punishment. often, their husbands were responsible for said sin(s), but they managed to escape the curse and their wives were cursed instead. some never find out that they were rokurokubi.
nukekubi are closely related to rokurokubi. they are practically the same yokai, however they feed on blood at night rather than lamp oil and have a more violent nature. the curse can be passed on.
and last but not least, the head of the train is based off of the oboroguruma. it is a ghostly oxcart yokai with a large face. they are an object-turned-yokai created from carriages who have lost carriage fights over parking spots. the first oboroguruma was created from two rival ladies fighting over a parking spot for their carriages. taxi drivers often got into carriage fights for the most scenic parking spots in crowded areas such as festivals.
in-game, all of the express members poke fun at the concept of cuphead and mugman's deaths, but the yokais they were inspired by came to be bc of something bad they did or hatred for something or someone, which is the inspiration of my hc that phantom express magic distorts the memory, behavior, and physical appearance of the express members the more time they spend on it. so when they first got on the train, all of them more likely hated the living, especially those who tried to get on the express, but now make fun of them which was rooted in their original hatred/grudge, but eventually forgot abt it. it is also likely that all of them have been around for a very long time, particularly the conductor.
okay hope you guys enjoyed your meal

NAME: Sunset Spire
LOCATION: The Pines
Taller than even the trees of the Pines, Sunset Spire is an impressive tower and feat of engineering that can be seen from almost any point in town. What some visitors to town don’t know is that Sunset Spire is actually a cemetery. And even with its visibility, the Spire has an air of tranquility around it as it seems right at home in the woods. This sturdy tower consists of 12 floors and a ceiling that can be traversed (in theory); each floor has a round construction and holds up to 400 graves in the manner of a crypt. Some in town have pushed to make the Spire taller so it has increased capacity, but the current favored proposal is that some of the dead in there the longest are “evicted” to make room for the more recently deceased. There is an operation to do this, but it keeps getting stalled. Something about ghosts.
While there are no crypts or mausoleums, making this cemetery of little appeal to the undead, various necrophages sometimes wander in and dig up some plots on the lower floors. Tenome in particular pose an issue here.
The real problem, however, are the ghosts. Something about the isolated location makes them especially active. There seems to be a concentration of people who died in especially traumatic ways buried here (yes, even more so than other cemeteries in town), so many rage-filled ghosts and poltergeists drift up and down the Spire. Those who see ghosts may be disturbed by their grotesque appearances.
While the roof is intended to be walkable, an especially violent ghost has always blocked the only entrance up to it. Some efforts have been made to rid the Spire of this ghost, but it either always comes back, or there haven’t been any successes. No one knows why the ghost doesn’t want anyone up on the roof, but it will stop people stubborn enough to try with lethal force, summoning winds to knock them off the Spire.
Yes, the Spire is sturdy. And there aren’t usually any corporeal threats. But that doesn’t mean no one has died in this cemetery. In the occurrence this happens, the township has agreed to allow those who die within the tower to be buried there too. How kind.
There is no cell service out here, but anyone who takes their phone out and attempts to place a call will hear a strange sound that’s just a series of high pitched beeps in a melodic pattern. Those who listen to the beeps too long invariably become ill. Once they leave the grounds they feel well again.

Effe looks sick ! Tell me more 👀
so to explain dearest EFFE, i’m actually going to have to explain twilight idanly, my poor poor angel.
so let’s start at the beginning. to get some more context read about her younger twin sister whisper here. and this is gonna be broken up in 3 sections.
pt 1: twilight idanly, the terranean
Tumblr media
as mentioned, twilight was the elder twin sister of whisper though many assumed the opposite. she was much more demure and soft spoken compared to her sister, and didn’t really agree with their father’s single minded hatred of the other side of their family. she wanted to be able to mingle with them, however, her father forbade them from seeing the rest of their family sans important events. twilight felt very isolated and alone during this period.
chance for freedom came in the form of the day of fissures… or it could’ve. she wanted to leave eros along with their cousins to venture into the unknown, however, whisper forbade her and had her physically restrained. after the fire separated the two halves of their family and the aegeans from the nomads, twilight was unsure of her fate, with whisper being named chieftain of aegos. but she would soon discover fate would not be kind to her.
pt 2: twilightsorrow, the beast
Tumblr media
as the HWM grew and vis was able to be transformed into tenom, whisper started to have many defectors experimented upon to see if they could withstand the beastly transformation, or increase of their cava. most died. but twilight lived. her sorrowful wails of agony as her teeth grew, and horns protruded from her body and her eyes’s sclera changed to black among other horrifying transformations led to the guards who watched over her to rename her twilightsorrow, and then eventually just the beast.
every fortnight, she would be released into the overrun argos and in a bloodlust haze, would slaughter thousands of monsters and beasts alike. she didn’t remember much of what she did during that time. she stopped being capable of speech beyond a few words at times, and fully began to drown in the depths of this terribly dark place; on the brink of being transformed fully into a beast herself.
however,
one lonely night a bard was thrown in the cell next to hers. he too had tried to run away and before he could make it out of eros he was caught for the next round of experiments. his name was reed, and he carried with him a reed pipe. at this point the knowledge of sana, cava and ars was becoming more common place, and he knew he had quite a lot of ars and was able to, as many bards back then could, use cantatio; able to create magic and gusts of wind and other small spells with his pipe. though twilightsorrow didn’t wish to speak to him, he spoke to her, and eventually left her his reed pipe teaching her the musical note in the terranean scale “effe” as well as the magic that goes along with it.
(as an aside: the note effe correlates to the note in our world F, and magically is associated with gales, gusts, powerful short bursts of wind. the longer or louder it’s played the more damage it can cause over a continuous period of time).
when he was taken away, he was killed, unable to withstand tenom. but in secret twilightsorrow continued to practice effe, hoping that one day she could be able to escape.
the time eventually came. when she was brought to be let loose into argos to roam and slaughter again, twilightsorrow blew loud, clear, and deafening into the reed pipe, summoning as much magic as she could muster to break apart the cage, and killing her escort posse in the process. she fled into the woods never to be seen by another terranean again.
pt 3: EFFE, goddess of winds, gales and gusts
Tumblr media
realistically that should be the end of her story. but it’s not! she wandered on her own for weeks, eventually coming to the brink of death and near starvation when she was found by the ancient god of chaos (among other things), MIZDARR. he could sense the chaos within her, and was able to see her memories as to what she went through before she was found. he asked her if she wanted to live and she barely managed to say yes.
it was then that he transformed her; from a mangled and broken beast to a beautiful, powerful, dangerous goddess in her own right. she grew beautiful curling horns and wings, able to summon all manners of wind and weather at her beck and call. his one restraint on her is that she could not ever return to eros and seek revenge on those who did this to her — because without that, she would’ve been unable to be reborn. she agreed to this, took to the skies, and has not set her feet on the ground ever since.
the experimentations of eros were purposefully destroyed by those at the now defunct HWM and no one will ever know the true origins of the wind goddess. but, EFFE likes to keep it that way. she prefers who she is now over who she came from any day.
this was quite long but i have a special place in my heart and head for twilight/EFFE. there’s a character named after her in present day terrae as well, named efelia who is someone clear meets before canon and tbh with all of EFFE’s backstory, it’s kind of fitting.
after being ascended to deity-hood, EFFE and The Lady of the Mists (or pinella-long story) were able to reunite, and The Lady helped her process some of her grief. the two of them spend a lot of time together now that neither of them could in mortal life :’)
