We Are Camping Wrong

Camping is America's pastime when mom and dad told us to go get the tent from the garage we knew we are in for a good time. Camping with family and friends is a bonding experience like no other because it encompasses the reality of our ancestors living in the outdoors. In the early 1900s and late 1800s, thousands of people migrated west camping out on trails through the Rockies, and the Sierra Nevada's. Now camping has changed with all the comforts of home, and the point of camping is being whittled away by comfort. At a moment's notice, an RV can pull up to a campsite and have water, power, and flushing toilets in minutes. RVs and modern glamping are ruining the best aspects of going deep into the outdoors, being secluded, and silence.

With the development of modern RV parks, Air BnB's, and cabins we are changing the way we explore the outdoors. Everyone dreams of staying near that place in the middle of nowhere with nothing but a big open sky, but everyone also wants modern conveniences like water and power. The point of exploring the outdoors is to not hike two miles then sit in an air-conditioned trailer for 4 hours cook dinner in an oven then watch tv till you fall asleep. The outdoors is a rugged place in which you need to go out and disappear from reality to really connect with yourself while enduring a new more struggling experience. We all need to experience what it is like to learn how to cook on a wood fire, take a bath in a creek, and not have any cell service to constantly check Instagram. Exploring and roughing it helps you gain self-confidence, and reconnects you with your soul while making a memorable experience.

Now you may be asking yourself where do I find such a beautiful place to just park the car hike into the wilderness and camp? Well, the perfect resource is just can be a few hours away, either in a State Park, the National Forest, or the National Parks. My favorite choice is the National Forest because it is free to use all you have to do is have a map, a vehicle, basic forestry knowledge, and a tent. You can basically camp anywhere in the National Forest without paying a dime, and in my opinion, the National Forests have fewer people and gorgeous views. My best experiences in life were made on the top of a mountain waking up with nothing but views and a hot campfire going. Whether you have an RV or just a tent, try camping you never know you might just like roughing it more than you think.
