One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon.

I used to hate Rei Ayanami, but now I love her. My dislike for her came from frustration that she was so passive, but after I continued to engage with the show and think about her, I realized she is a traumatized and abused character, and she revolts against Gendo at the end (Girlboss).

Honestly, I see Rei as AroAce, so... No Romo

Non-romantic OTP, let her and Shinji hang out, read books, and be buds. I also like her and Toji as friends.

I'm unsure if I have an unpopular Rei opinion unless that opinion is best girl wars are dumb and sexualizing teenage girls is gross.

I wish Rei had more of a character arc that matted in the rebuilds. Let her have a role beyond "Oh look she's maternal". Women are more than conduits for babies. Let Rei have interests, likes, and dislikes beyond "oh cute baby." She could totally want to be a mom or not, but I felt Tentative Name Rei Ayanami was done dirty in the Rebuilds since she died as soon as she started to explore an identity. I just want to hear Rei be passionate about things and have her tell us how she likes to farm or loves cats or anything, but don't kill her right after. IDK, I just get annoyed by how often women get reduced to "she wants a baby and that's it."

For my seventy-fourth Evangelion book review, here is Shin Evangelion Gekijouban Memorial Album (New Evangelion Theatrical Edition Memorial Album), which is a special item from the Evangelion Store. This 20-page hardcover is a photo album devoted to scenes from the movie Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time. And when I say “photo album”, I really mean it... you know, the kind with thick textured pages that are sticky so you can attach photographs to them, and then the pages are covered with clear sheets to protect the photos? Yeah, that’s what this book is, except the included “photographs” are actually prints of various scenes from the movie, often with bits of dialogue underneath. (The photos are already stuck to the pages for you, so there’s no work involved.) It’s a nifty tribute to the movie!

The cover of the book (shown at the beginning of this review) may seem pretty simple, however the movie title is stamped in gold foil, so it actually looks shiny and pretty if you see it person. My camera couldn’t do it justice. This book is not available in English or French (although there’s one line of French from Mari), but the only text is some dialogue from the movie, so if you’ve already seen the film then you have an idea of what’s being said anyway. The book has two full color “photos” per page, making for a total of forty images. Want to see what some of them look like? Keep reading for the rest of the book review, plus a few more pictures!

To start off, here’s a quick snapshot just to give you an idea of what the inside of the book looks like:

Next, I’ll give you a closer look at some of the images. On the first page of the book, one picture shows Maya, and the second pic shows Evangelion Unit-08 using the Eiffel Tower as a weapon:

Heh, Mari’s line “Excusez-moi, Eiffel!!!” makes me laugh every time. Anyway, let’s move on. Some of the images chosen for this book end up making interesting comparisons or contrasts. For example, this page shows Tentative Name: Rei Ayanami drinking delicious soup, and then it shows Asuka drinking water... according to the movie, water is the only thing that Asuka still consumes:

For a bit of character/story progression, this page starts off with Shinji in despair, and then shows Kensuke offering Shinji a fishing pole so he can try to catch food for the village:

I also received a small clear file that has colors representing the four movies of the New Theatrical Edition. I don’t know if this clear file actually comes with the book, or if the Evangelion Store decided to just add it to my package as a thank-you gift of some sort. (Possibly the latter, since it says “Evangelion Store” on the back.) Anyway, check it out:

Overall, Shin Evangelion Gekijouban Memorial Album isn’t particularly earth-shattering in terms of content, however it’s still a lovely souvenir of the Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 movie. The fact that it’s made like a real photo album is pretty fun, so I’m glad that I added it to my collection!

This book is currently sold out, and I don’t know if the Evangelion Store plans on making more copies. So if you really want to get this book but the Evangelion Store ends up not restocking it, you can try checking websites that specialize in selling used Japanese books, such as Mandarake.

The day has arrived, after weeks of waiting she has arrived in a dark grey plastic bag and secured in a cardboard holder and in perfect condition: Sega's Tentative Name: Rei Ayanami from Evangelion 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. 

Yes I know a lot of you guys don't like the Rebuilds(especially the 3rd one), but you gotta admit there's a few gems in it.

I was actually gonna get her around my Birthday month(September being the earliest), but then Amazon started having this Prime special and these were selling like hotcakes so I had to her as soon as possible before she's gone, and on a sweet deal of being around $20.

It’s so weird that Rei Q’s canon name is Ayanami, Rei(tentative name). Like the 2.22 aftercredits show she’s been around since a bit after the near 3rd impact. They had 14 years and never got around to giving her a real name.
