From Scratch
youtube
I've been hearing this title a lot since it aired in Netflix. My brother and some friends recommended it; and so, I clicked on Play and watched the first episode to see what it was about. The first seconds of the episode the audience knows the ending, we can deduce what's coming and yet, we all move on the the next and the next until we reach the last episode and end it with wet cheeks and a sad smile.
From Scratch is an 8 episode series based on Tembi Locke's memoir called From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily and Finding Home. I haven't read the book but I don't need to in order to know that the series was faithful to the feelings, experiences and the life of these people. The series makes us part of this family and we, the audience, share in their laughter and pain.
It is an amazing journey, a story of self-discovery, family healing, love in all its manifestations. . . life. Lino's and Amy's love made way for family relations to improve. Lino's relationship with his father mends. Amy's parents interaction changes too and they pass from being terrible exes to parents who work together for their children. And this is just as beautiful to see as it is to watch the couple's love for each other. It is inspiring, how they were able to talk things through and always find a way so that both of them could be happy individuals and have a healthy marriage.
I come from a family unit that is really close. And raising my son has been a tribe thing, so I can understand what Idalia's birth mother wanted for her child and she got it. Idaliah was raised in a tribe, it wasn't just Lino and Amy, it was their parents, siblings and friends who all were there to raise her. That supportive unit also helped them in this journey. I also liked the relationship between Amy and her sister. As an older sister, I know how Zora feels about her little sister.
This is a story about love and it is worth watching.

We often speak to the histories and afterlives of slavery and how the multigenerational traumas and intimate violence of Jim & Jane Crow still resonate and ripple across the Diaspora . . . but we don’t take enuf (enough) time to showcase the breadth of resilience, miracles, and magic nurtured in our community. In post-slavery world, Blacks folks of all shades and sizes found moments in the sun where they could shape their new world and capture their humanity through the emerging field of photography.
Looking at this collection, I am reminded of when March Church Terrell declared that Black folks “are the only human beings in the world with fifty-seven varieties of complexions who are classed together as a single racial unit. Therefore, we are really truly colored people, and that is the only name in the English language which accurately describes us.”

Mary McLeod Bethune, Nannie Helen Burroughs, Charlotte Hawkins Brown, and Mary Church Terrell, were just a few notable women with whom our beloved Dr. Carter G. Woodson was known to associate with. Part of the reason Dr. Woodson was so successful in his pursuit of preserving, disseminating, and institutionalizing Black History was due to the support of women, in particular Black women.

"The ballot, wisely used, will bring to her the respect and protection that she needs. It is her weapon of moral defense. Under present conditions, when she appears in court in defence of her virtue, she is looked upon with amused contempt. She needs the ballot to reckon with men who place no value upon her virtue, and to mould healthy public sentiment in favor of her own protection."
Say hello to D.C.'s own Nannie Helen Burroughs: teacher, suffragist, union advocate, and civil rights pioneer. Born in 1879/1880 Virginia to formerly enslaved parents, Burroughs later moved to D.C., graduating from M Street High School and making the acquaintance of comtemporaries like Mary Church Terrell (Lesson #29 in this series). Burroughs became deeply involved in the dual causes of womens' suffrage and civil rights, mentored by Walter Henderson Brooks (look for a future lesson in this Series about him), who was then a pastor at the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church.
Later Burroughs founded the Womens' Convention of the National Baptist Convention and served as its director for 13 years. Burroughs and her fellow D.C. resident Mary McLeod Bethune (Lesson #49 in this series), also organized and formed the National Association of Wage Earners. Burroughs rose to prominence as an outspoken voice for Black women; arguing that they should have the same opportunities for education and for job training. Such was her gift for writing and for oration that she was appointed by President Herbert Hoover to chair a special committee on housing for African Americans.
Perhaps Burroughs' greatest accomplishment (certainly the one of which she was the proudest), was the funding and eventual founding of the National Training School for Women And Girls in 1909. Encouraged and advocated by key Washington figures such as historian Carter G. Woodson (look for a future lesson in this Series about him, as well), the school was notable for never having solicited money from white donors. Burroughs wanted each student to become "the fiber of a sturdy moral, industrious and intellectual woman," and over the course of the next 20 years, the school grew into a rigorous curriculum of academic and vocational courses; offering a unique combination of educational opportunities for Black young women and girls. At the time the school offered academic training equivalent to the upper grades of high school and community college, religious instruction, and training in domestic arts and vocations; and perhaps most importantly, the very first American institution to offer all of these opportunities within a single educational space.
