A new Shipwreck ?

A few days ago it became known that fishermen of a shrimp cutter found a wooden statue near Texel in the Netherlands. They named this charming gentleman Barry and handed him over to archaeologist Michiel Bartels, who notices a few things about the image. ,,The jacket has funny flaps. They look like a Leiden duffel, but that came into vogue around 1800. There may be a so-called Phrygian cap on his head, but it could also be the cap of a Basque whaler. We need to get the Rijksmuseum involved for that.”  So it seems that Barry is from the 17th century.

Well, it is nice that the fishermen found Barry, but why is this interesting? Barry is the first evidence of a previously undiscovered shipwreck from the 17th century and that Barry is a piece of the stern decoration. The archaeologists are now investigating this and trying to find the wreck, so maybe we will get an update on this soon.
