Dihn Bronzeclaw’s Backstory
This is just what I’ve written for my current favorite Kobold character. She’s currently a level 1 Artificer! I used a template to help craft it but I still really like how it turned out.
The picture below was drawn by TheRedOcelot for her, check out him out for other neat characters, fanmade and ocs!
Parents?
Dihn’s parents are members of the League of Earthforgers. Their lineage and natural abilities make them very useful in designing structures and digging underground, ensuring their spots in the league. Panype, a shiny red scaled kobold and her mother, stopped working for a while when she decided to become a parent. Both being pure blooded kobolds, they produced a beautiful clutch of children. Rus, a dull blue scaled kobold and her father, stayed working and did extra shifts to allow for Panype to stay with her children. They knew they didn’t have to struggle with rearing children for long due to the fast maturation, but it was still a busy time for them.
How did your parents meet? What was their relationship like?
They met as most co-workers would, just happen to be scheduled with each other for many shifts. Rus saw how Panype would find newer/more efficient methods in her work and admired her determination to always complete any given task. Panype soon saw that Rus eager to help improve their situation as well and they worked together to become an efficient unit that the local management of the League of Earthforgers began to rely on.
Brith and Family:
Her birth was nothing out of the ordinary for kobolds, Dihn started out the same as all her other siblings. Her horns were just nubs and her deep red scales were still soft and pliable at the time. Her many brothers and sisters were also of varies shades of red to blue, a mixture from the parental heritages.
Her siblings are as follows; Dhab, Mek, Ghuk, Zuda, Dhikrix, Gizo, Jidrald, Koghirla, Tezni, Ulrak, Rasgi, and Zusga. They are still in Arkney as far as Dihn is aware of.
Hometown:
Dihn’s hometown is called Arkney, located in Marryland. The village itself wasn’t that large, save for the quantity of visitors and workers that moved around through the Earthforgers. The population was just under a thousand people, but there seemed to be more from all the visitors.
Her favorite place to visit after lessons and chores was Erky’s, the towns largest tavern and main place for people to go and relax. Erky himself is an old gnome who helped celebrate all of Rus and Panype’s children coming of age, also being one of the only places that could even host so many patrons at one time. While there were regulations on alcohol, the old gnome slipped some brews and drinks to his more favored customers, like Dihn. Another place was called The Hammer Strikes Twice, a blacksmith run by a rough elven woman named Tio Ostoro. Tio didn’t like the idea of having “children” near her forge but found a special place in her heart for Dihn.
A couple years after becoming an adult kobold at the age of 8, she moved to Valo to experience a new surrounding and to learn more of the world. The travelers and outside workers could only satisfy her curiosity so much to the point she had to travel around herself. Dihn didn’t enjoy the intense labour that the League of Earthforgers provided, especially with her knack of learning new things. She often created new gadgets, including her multi view, shaded goggles that she now wears. One traveler suggested she move to Valo where there’s a faction of Epsilon stationed. Intrigued, Dihn gave her farewells to her friends and family and set out on her own.
Early Childhood: 2-4 years old
Her parents treated her with respect, but that treatment was having to be shared with her many siblings. With having to compete with 12 others, it was easy for her to feel lost in the crowd. This didn’t bother her too much as it gave her more time to focus on her hobby of understanding how things were build together and taken apart.
Dihn didn’t ever meet her grandparents, but she did meet her other extended family. Every so often, her aunts and uncles would be moving through Arkney for work and then they would be off. They came telling stories of the places they’ve been and helped construct, but it wasn’t above Dihn to notice that every time a wave of them would visit, there were fewer of them than before. This was one of the signs that this kind of work was not for her.
Dihn didn’t make many friends, although she grew ended up making a couple strong connections with the townsfolk. First was Erky the barkeeper, a slightly older than middle aged gnome who’s height just rivaled Dihn’s. He’s often adorned with large spectacles and necklaces from foreign lands. His peculiar nature seemed to be an asset in allowing Dihn to feel at home, but without having to be around 34 other people. She could come to his tavern anytime and relax and listen to his stories of the world. In all the stories told, Erky never revealed what his true last name is, but she has a list of 45 different last names he’s told her. At this point, she’s pretty sure they are all a part of his name.
Her next friend was rough elven blacksmith named Tio. While not very wise, she made up for it in skill and tenacity. Tio is a former adventurer who decided to settle down as a blacksmith in this small town, applying her strong muscles to work the metal and forge. She is a small woman, but exceptionally fit. Tio typically wears a sleeveless long coat of deep red leather and dull grey iron scale mail. Her eyes are a light green and her moppish golden hair is in a choppy pixie style. It was observing Tio and her work that Dihn learned she also had a knack for the forge, and that her inner magic could be channeled through creation.
Teen/Young Adult Years: 4 - 7
Dihn’s talent in creating thing through the forge was not unnoticed by Tio. Although at this stage it wasn’t that skillful, the quantity made up for the quality. Because of this, Tio gave Dihn a job working with her to create small things, like nails, horseshoes and other small- and yet-time consuming projects. It was when Dihn’s magic and craftiness flared up again and showed Tio just how talented she was when a workorder stack would have normally taken few weeks to complete, took Dihn a couple days. Tio was slightly jealous of this ability, she saw there was much more for Dihn in Arkney and urged her to travel and learn more about her craft and abilities. For that future, Tio constructed a letter of recommendation for Dihn in case she ever wanted to work in another city.
Adult Years: 7 - 14
One of the biggest events of her life was to decide to move away from home and not to pursue the family trade of diggers. Her siblings didn’t understand, her father was curious and annoyed with Tio and Erky for planting these ideas in her head, but her mother saw and understood Dihn. When Dihn was about to leave, her friends and family all pooled their money together to buy her tool kits and give money for her travels. It was here that Tio gave Dihn her letter of recommendation and jokingly threatened her that if she ever started up shop in Arkney she would personally burn it down.
The trip to Valo was uneventful, if not boring were it not for the occasional racial remark about how it looked like a child wearing impoverished clothing. She was able to ignore these comments and make her way to the big city with her head up high. At first the excitement was overwhelming, but she quickly learned how to deal with the hustle and bustle of the town and went off searching for the Epsilon guild.
She was quickly denied access due to two parts. One being Epsilon had a very strict recruitment policy and required something of a marvel to be brought before them to be accepted. Another being that she looked like an urchin begging for coins. Not being an urchin and knowing she could easily come up with something, she left the guild and started to look for work to tide herself over in the meantime. Although it took some convincing him that Tio’s written recommendation wasn’t a forgery, a human blacksmith named Simon Dukakin allowed her to start working for him at the “Copper Outfitter”.
The work was long and hard, and not being on friendly terms with Simon created a straining relationship for the first year she was in Valo. Tensions were eased up after a year of working with each other as Simon became accustomed to her quirks and racial tendencies and they became solid co-workers. In Dihn’s off time, she would go exploring the city and found many dumps of thrown away machinery. Curious by how they are constructed, she would bring many broken machines back to the shop and start repairing them and learning the circuitry.
Over the years she started to actively create more mini gadgets, nothing extraordinary but enough of a building stone to eventually built up to create her “marvel”, a 6ft tall robot that would obey her commands. It had issues with more fine-tuned actions, but that was okay with her. She figured this was enough to gain access to Epsilon. Unfortunately, she was wrong as she was denied access again at the door. This time it was because her robot wasn’t nearly advance enough to warrant a proper examination. She attempted to argue that it only looks like this due to the scraps she had to construct it form, but her pleas were ignored. Frustrated, but not defeated, she went back to the Copper Outfitter and saw Simon waiting for her.
Simon told her that if she wanted to improve her skills more, she would have to travel more and see the world. Her small scope of the country won’t help her with her creations and that she will benefit if she went to more places and did more thing. As a final gift to her, he allowed her to craft what ever she needed to travel, both for protection and for comfort. Dihn made her small crossbow and fixed up her outfit with more durable materials and set out for a new chapter of her life.
What quirks does she have? Any notable traits?
She is asexual and is oblivious to most advances. This is partially blamed on the fact nobody seems to think she’s an adult and doesn’t care enough to prove it. She does however hold a fondness for mechanical things.
Dihn also believes she knows more than the other person when dealing with machinery. This arrogance is usually justified, but sometimes does end up with egg on her face.
Religion?
Dihn isn’t too religious but she does observe Mekromundus as that’s the one deity that seems to align with her views. It is a deity that doesn’t require any extra work outside of what she already does so Dihn can spend more time working on her codex and less on useless actions.
What Profession is your character?
She’s mostly a blacksmith by experience, but also part time scavenger and inventor. Should she have it her way, she would have been in Epsilon years ago working on her new machine.
What does your character look like?
Dihn is a short scalie kobold with light red scales. Coming up to a full height of 2’4”, she often has issues making people believe she’s not a dragonborn child. Her horns grew wild on the top of her head, giving her a dual mohawk look. Dihn’s underbelly is a soft yellow wth a more leathery feel to it vs her normally scaily body.
She wears oversized pants and jacket that have been repurposed to fit her needs. The pants have a large hole in the back for her tail and her jacket has many pockets on the inside to hold her materials and tools. Her top is a plane tank-top style that is tucked into her pants covered in machine grease and soot like her baggy pants.
Does your character have plans for the future? What goals does your character have?
She wants to prove to Epsilon that she belongs there. She’s incredibly smart and knows it which causes her to be annoyed at superficial details like appearances and the such.
What does your character do for fun?
Dihn’s hobby is tinkering and studying machines. Anytime she has moments to sit down, she pulls out scraps/junk and starts to reassemble them in new ways. Maybe one day they will be something, but for now they remain junk.
