Hello, tumblers. Today I want to share some of my thoughts on Transformers (mainly TF:P but might apply to other continuities). The question is "Why do Autobots, especially Optimus Prime, allow human kids to be in any sort of danger?" I will try to provide an in universe explanation (because IRL it would not be interesting to watch a show where kids and their families got into the Witness Protection program and disappeared).

The short answer is most Autobots got sort of professional deformation because the Great War has been waged for so long. Each one of them, their friends and comrades have been fighting for thousands of years. There were no civilians left (either dead or joined ranks of Decepticons or Autobots). Even their youths fought (Bumblebee and Smokescreen). My point is that the Autobots don't see children as we do. For them a child is still a soldier, albeit small and in need of guidance and protection. Because if you don't train them young - they will grow up and die due to lack of combat experience (talk about jobs needing 20 years of work exp. at 25). I think, the Autobots apply this mental gymnastics (maybe subconsciously) to human kids under their protection. This is why Optimus lets kids go on missions with experienced members of his team - to provide a safer training environment in the field.

There might be some misunderstandings and concepts lost in translation as I am not very proficient in writing in English but I am happy to hear your thoughts.

Shockwave and Body Language

During my TF:P re-watch I kept taking note of various Shockwave movements because I noticed they tend to really exaggerate his movements when he does things - like speaking - to, presumably, make up for the lack of facial expressions. While he is Still very often, when he does move, he tends to move a LOT and with great exaggerated motions to sort of emphasize how he operates or what he’s feeling (comes up most often when he’s annoyed or angry; almost always at Starscream) and I wonder if, more than just animator’s intent, it’s something he himself doesn’t do unconsciously to make up for the lack of expression elsewhere. He doesn’t exactly have a face to express himself with, so the next best thing is body language.

But you can see here, without him even saying anything, that Shockwave is pretty visibly annoyed with Starscream. He leans back, throws his shoulder back, tilts his head back defiantly, and is kind of hunched over and tense with a clenched hand as he walks away. Like that’s a looot of very clear body language to make up for what, in other characters, would probably have been expressed as an angry facial expression. TF:P in general is just very good with animating body language into their characters (see Starscream’s wings,) but I’m especially glad they didn’t cop out on Shockwave because he’s supposed to be “emotionless”.

They do it really well when they animate his little antennae wiggling around too.

In the first they slowly pin backwards in response to what Starscream is saying, and he lowers his head a bit as well. Clearly, he’s at least a little bit annoyed and reaaaally not here to listen to Star’s little ego stroking.

In the second, it’s less that they’re moving in response to something he’s feeling, but rather just to show off that he’s thinking. He’s considering Starscream’s words and determining whether or not there’s any actual logic behind them. It’s interesting to think that when he’s deep in thought, or considering something, that his antennae might swivel around kind of similar to how a dog’s would when they’re listening for something.

In the last, Shockwave is very clearly, like, scared. His optic is pinned, he’s stumbling backwards, and he jerks his head and antennae around rapidly like he’s startled in reaction to the Terrorcons coming closer, or like he can’t control them bc he’s too freaked out.

There’s also something to be said for the way Shockwave just moves on like a daily basis when he’s not doing anything super significant. Everything he does kind of feels like he’s moving with a purpose, and like he’s very aware of his own weight and size and how to use it - or how not to use it.

Case in point, I have about a million and one different gifs of just his hand alone because, when he’s not fighting or angry as hell, the way he moves his hand is with this sort of exceeding gentleness and care and elegance - like he’s well aware of his own weight and strength and goes out of his way to be as light as possible in his touches. I get the feeling maybe he used to struggle with breaking things because of his sheer size, and this is how he learned, over the years, to make up for it when working in a place as delicate as a laboratory.

Is this entire section just a love letter to Shockwave’s hand movements? Yes. BUT, regardless, you can see pretty easily in All of these how gentle and careful he is with his hand movements, from the way he just Lightly taps buttons with the tips of his fingers, to moving his hands very Slowly, to very Gently gripping things like they’re precious to him.

It’s a wonderful dichotomy with how he uses his weight when he’s fighting.

Like DAMN, the dude KNOWS he’s huge and strong and KNOWS exactly how and when to use it. The way his movements vary so very much from situation to situation speaks volumes to not only the animators who did an excellent job animating him, but to his character itself and how he holds himself, moves himself, and why he moves the way he does.

I think Shockwave is a very purposeful mech, and that translates to his movements and body language too. Every move he makes, every gesture, every twitch, there’s a reason, and 90% of it goes towards making him an expressive character despite having no facial features - something I think he may do intentionally, especially as the show goes on and he actually has to, you know, talk to people. And, I think, Shockwave has to learn to communicate and express himself in his own ways considering he doesn’t exactly have all the tools available to others in terms of physical expression - and even vocal expression, to an extent, considering 90% of the time he tends to keep his tone of voice rather flat and monotone, save for the occasional fluctuation because of irritation, or like the gentle way he spoke to Ratchet.

Bottom line, I’m in love with him. Taste closed.

Sure! Just letting you know I've only seen half of Season One at the time of writing this request. I hope despite this you enjoy this concept and I get the character right!

Pairing: Romantic/Platonic

Possible Trigger Warnings: Gender-Neutral Darling, Kidnapping, Stalking implied, Torture, Human/Transformer, Megatron sees you as a pet because you're small and squishy, Degrading behavior, Threat of death, Murder, Violence, Obsession, Sadism.

There's an unfortunate factor about this pair.

Megatron is not a fan of organics.

He isn't anything like those Autobots.

Allying with humans as if they're so similar to a Cybertronian.

His concern is power.

Megatron isn't going to pick up a random human off the street without reason.

You'd need to have connections with Autobots or something to prove your worth.

Government official or a close friend of them... some sort of connection that can give him a reason to hunt you down.

Once he does, he'll kidnap you and that's where things begin.

I'd like to first note obvious thing...

Megatron and you have a large size difference in terms of height and build.

It takes a lot of time for Megatron to get used to an organic, let alone one so small.

Go on, look up his height.

He could crush you in his hand.

Megatron likes power and he sees humans as weak creatures.

He doesn't get how Optimus likes these things....

Not until much later when he keeps you around does he understand it in his own cruel way.

At first you're handed off to Starscream.

The usual torture for getting info out of you.

Once your throat is raw from screaming and crying, you're tossed into a cell for later use.

You're a... pitiful thing to him, really.

He almost feels bad... perhaps killing you would be merciful.

Then he sees you in the cell, on your knees and leaking from your eyes.

What's funnier? You beg to him.

You beg for the pain to stop, that you'll try to help him in anyway you can...

He doubts you can but that nature of yours fuels his ego.

If there's one thing humans can do, it's use their pathetic body to stroke your ego.

That's when Megatron begins to tolerate you.

He'll keep you just to show Autobots what humans can truly be used for.

Tricks and labor to please beings so much stronger than them.

Megatron's obsession is very slow acting.

He makes you do things for him no matter how degrading, just to please him.

The moment he does show something softer, you're too weak to acknowledge it at first.

For the most part Megatron uses you.

He feels if anything, organics can be used for his own gain.

You also happen to be a... cute one.

So easy to destroy... your life in his hands.

Safe to say most of his obsession is due to his ego.

He's sadistic and causing you pleasure and pain feeds into such desires.

Each time his red eyes look at you, dwarfing you in size alone, he sees you shake.

You're lucky he's only ever merciful towards you.

Megatron does not like others pointing out that he's enjoying an organic.

The large and feared Decepticon Lord Megatron? Holding such a small creature in his large hand?

Starscream comments on him and his new pet.

The smaller Decepticon nearly broke the ship wall with how hard he hit it, flung by his master like a toy.

Megatron never outright admits how you make him feel.

You flinch each time a metal flinger taps your head, knowing that alone could hurt you.

Megatron is struggling not to crush you.

You'd cause such a mess.

He'll never see you as an equal...

But he does feel an odd sense of care towards you.

Megatron keeps you in his ship, a large cell constructed for your enclosure.

He hides you from Autobots and Decepticons alike.

He likes to think you're his.

Megatron also likes to hear you worship and beg to him.

To see you grovel... pledging your loyalty all to him...

That's his favorite part.

Escape is nowhere near possible all on your own.

He's the leader of the Decepticons, if you fled his ship to Earth somehow he'll hunt you down.

Wherever you go, he will track and drag you back kicking and screaming.

He would hate to kill you-

But misbehave and you're on thin ice.

Megatron would have others killed for you.

Well... those he feels are a threat to you and him-

Autobots, humans, even other Decepticons will be executed if they even think of taking you.

Megatron doesn't mind keeping you on his shoulder as some sort of parrot if you don't mind the height.

Well... he tolerates it as you tend to chatter nervously to him.

He doesn't mind your voice....

Most of the time you're in your cell or in his hands.

To be an organic kept by Megatron is an odd sight.

Unfortunately you've grown on him and he plans to keep you...

No wonder those Autobots keep humans.

My entry for MegOp week, day 2, Monday June 12th 2023, prompt Private/Respect.

This is set in the pre-war days of Transformers: Prime, but I borrowed a character from G1 to use as a plot device. Their name is Reflector, and I say “they“ because it’s actually three Minicons that ether share a Spark or have a hive-mind mentality, it was never revealed which.

Anyway, they turn into a camera and acted as spies during Great War One in the original storyline, so I decided in my headcannon they were Paparazzi on Cybertron before the war.

This comic explains why they didn’t appear in TF:P. They were getting damning pictures of the Rebel Leader Megatronus and his co-conspirator/lover Orion Pax, which would mean great scoop for them, and ether imprisonment or death for the Revolutionaries. Soundwave, endlessly loyal to Megatronus (and the first ever MegOp shipper in my headcannon), ain’t having that! So he does what any good friend/shipper would do, he commits murder. Rust in peace Reflector, you little creep.

I’ve decided to tweak Hivewing Inferno’s design a little bit, while also adjusting my methods for drawing WOF dragons.

Overall I’m really happy with how he turned out!

BONUS FACT: I’d imagine that Inferno quite often uses the Insecticon War-cry from TF:P.

Waspinator can too, but his is weaker and sounds more like a dying animal.

A straightforward human interpretation of the Starscream in TF:P. Nothing particularly original about this design (the sprig of hair and general formal military gear seems to be pretty standard) but there were some personal flourishes I liked doing. Jeweled buttons for his cockpit, spurs for his heel spikes, a red stripe on the arms for his missiles, etc.

I wish we'd seen Jazz in TF:P. Think how much his knowledge would have been invaluable.

This is a mechanism that traveled to almost every single citystate, and was able to integrate with every culture like a chameleon. He would have seen how they mourned their dead, celebrated their living, and everything in between.

He would have danced to their music, and eaten their food- laughed with their crowds.

To have seen that variety and beauty, and then to watch it disappear would have been heartbreaking.

I wish we could have had him there.
