Things I loved:

Steve Blum.

Megatron calling Twitch ‘Little Bird’ absolutely melted my heart because, next to him, she is sooooooo tiny! It’s adorable.

Buddy McSnarly. Buddy envisions everything I aim for in life.

Dot and Megatron’s dynamic was beautiful. They were so cool together. I love the fact that even though Dot is a human he laughs with her and treats her like a friend. If I don’t get a whole lot more of them in the next season there will be problems.

The fact that they only draw attention to Dot’s prosthetic once and it’s when she’s telling the bad guy that she was harmed by the war too, is awesome. It shows her not letting it get in the way of her day-to-day life. She fights giant alien robots like a badass. We need more characters like her in modern media, people with disabilities that have normal lives. I love the way she was portrayed.

Swindle was awesome. I loved tfa swindle and I think tfe Swindle is my second favorite portrayal of him.

Twitch’s swords were awesome.

Nightshade. REPRESENTATION BABYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY. FUCK. YEAH. I have wanted a non-binary transformer since I first got into transformers and my wish was finally granted. I love Nightshade and they better have an important roll or I will throw hands.

The fact that Megatron seemed to have better morals then Optimus, intrigued me.

Things I disliked:

The fact that the smoke and fire were 2d while everything else was 3d bugged me immensely.

Mo’s head and eyes seemed like they were twice as big as everyone else’s was kinda weird but that’s probably just me nitpicking.

Starscream showed up for less than 10 seconds. For 5 seconds he was just a silhouette and it lit him up, he did and evil laugh and then the episode was over. W H Y. WHY MUST THEY TORTURE US WITH FALSE HOPE. I NEED STARSCREAM CONTENT. AHHHHHHHH- (in all seriousness I can’t wait for more Steve Blum as Starscream. He did an amazing job in tfp and I can’t wait to see what he does now.)

All-in-all Earthspark was awesome and I can’t wait for more content.

The tfp design philosophy in general is fucking Ugly like 85% of tfp designs are so flat and unpleasant to look at ... I hate everyone's faces so MUCH. No nose asses. tfp soundwave is the exception bc they have such a gender.

i...think risks were taken with the models for transformers: prime, and i am a sucker for transformer designs that look more alien than full on "humanoid plating" more modern designs go for, but i do think some character designs just look ugly. and ugly isn't a bad thing! animation for the show was stellar for its time and was one of the best looking CGI shows for 2010. but some of the designs i question.

characters like dreadwing i like the design of. soundwave, wheeljack, bulkhead, and others were fine. knockout too though i don't find the "attractive" part of it everyone else does. but in terms of characters like y'know, starscream...what the absolute fuck happened there?

Personal opinion: (7/10)

He gets this rating purely because of how much I adore his design shdjsjwj. It's one of my top fav designs in TF media. OH and also that shit he does in season 3???!? I WILL NEVER GET OVER HOW FUCKING FUNNY THIS MOMENT IS and is wholly responsible for my Soundwave was an artist headcanon.

A silent creeper whose secretly a shitlord is really funny to me and I wanted more than we got honestly. Super dope how he's so good at his job he just... slowly walks over and fixes the problem without even looking.

He loses points for being a narc.

Design: (9/10)

Origami cryptid. Is this design rating purely because I love monster designs? I mean... I'm too biased to be 100% objective and probably added a point or two but I do genuinely think his design is just SOLID. I really dig the triangles and sharp angles of his design.

And I'd love to do a deeper look at his design when I have more energy like I've been wanting to do for a bunch of TFP characters including an analysis of his proportions. For now all I'll say is, I dig how unapologetically hard they lean into the weird. I love the bold direction characters have in TfP. Also they maintain strong silhouettes while maintaining detail and semi realism!

Micheal Bay, Disney, eat your heart out.

He and Starscream both have proportions that were messed with to make em look creepier and more alien. And I LOVE that HO BOI. It's a good way to add a sort of uncanny valley feel to enhance his creep factor.

I love all his lights and large flat planes. His movements, his posture, all are very well done to create that silent but dangerous image that speaks for itself. I could go on forever.

Also his little fingies are adorable. The facemask projections are brilliant.

Loses a point just cause I'd like a little more detail or armor on his arms. Maybe a little more integration of the shapes from the legs. It looks a little bare and some slight extra armour could really help believability and I'd spend less time wondering how his arm hasn't snapped off. And his big floppy feet kinda took away some of his creep factor for me cause my brain was just going 'eheheheh floppy feet' every shot he was walking which... THAT'S probably just a me issue tbh. These are P much personal opinion nitpicks so *shrug*

His cable tentacle things and Lazerbeak perching on his chest are such brilliant interpretations of his abilities and minicons being with him 24/7 from G1. Really made it all so seamless. Love love LOVE his design and how outside the box and brilliant his design is so he gets a point back for that.

You know what I dig as well? He kinda has a certain Motherboard aesthetic about him. He kinda looks like he's made of computer parts I really like that.

Narrative Handling: (4/10)

He played the creepy overseer role well. Really wish we coulda seen more tbh. For such a unique character we don't ever get any answers. And sure that maintains a sense of mystery but... Even just a shot or two of a subtle unimportant action to give us a read on the sorta personality he has and keep the audience intrigued. He fights Airachnid and easily knocks her back. He has abilities with the portals and tentacle dealies. It's super awesome but WHY?

I know the books have information but for all the questions tfp raises about him none are really answered in the context of the show itself in any satisfying way. So if you like Soundwave you may be feeling let down that such a powerful character didn't get more space to be explored. If you are neutral about Soundwave it was probably easy to forget he was there.

WHICH, IF YOURE GOING TO MAKE A WEIRD FUNKY MAN at least give us an episode or two letting us see him beyond the role he fills for Megatron yknow? I'm mostly salty cause he seems like he coulda been such a fun character had he been given the floor but because the show didn't have the time to expand on him (shakes fist at Hasbro) he ended up playing the role of convenient plot device man WHEN HE WAS SO CLOSE to being so much more than that. To be fair though Optimus gets a lot of convenient plot device moments that I am absolutely certain were Hasbro either rushing them or wanting more toy options.

Overall Soundwave, much like a lot of characters and plotlines in TfP, had a massive amount of story potential that never got realized. 😔

RID2015 Thunderhoof. This is a real personal preference, but boy is BIG, so it makes sense that his chest is pretty goddamn up there. Granted his shoulders are the more voluptuous  part about him, but we still find boss titties valid.

TFA Scrapper.  Dude not only got himself a fair bunch of bust, but is totally rocking a black, firm fitting shirt underneath it? Little but of thigh exposed- dude is a fucking himbo who had no idea how hot he is.

G1 Soundwave. Technically he’s a bit on the flat end, but that bust be doin’ some work. Those are working mom titties, and we respect those here.

TFP Bulkhead. I know, I could’ve put Optimus here, but hear me out here. Dude’s tits are actually full and plump, like a ripe ass peach, but his tum distracts people from that. I really wish Mayura was like TFP Soundwave. (AKA the dude in my icon, for those who haven’t watched TFP.)

Hypercompetent, hands the kids’ asses to them, wipes the floor with them, achieves every goal she tries for -- but very rarely ventures out, in her case because the Peacock is so dangerous Gabriel refuses to use her. 

(With Soundwave, his motivations for rarely going on the field are never explained, but when he does go out he’s fantastic, just goes and gets what he wants without any bullshit or convoluted schemes, and manages to do it without harming the kids, at all, despite having multiple opportunities to harm them. He pretty much spends the series going “Yoink, I’ll take that” or teleporting people off the Nemesis with those ground bridges of his. Everyone except for Megatron was terrified of him, and for damn good reason. It was amazing.)

Seriously. We could have had something amazing. 

Nathalie could’ve gone out and gotten Chat’s Miraculous in three seconds flat, but pretended Chat was “some boy she didn’t recognise” to Gabriel when she gave it to him, prompting an episode or two where the other heroes have to get it back. She could’ve made progress on finding the Guardian. She could’ve made progress on fixing the Peacock, or finding methods to. She could’ve made the addition of new people on Team Miraculous temporary by nicking their miraculouses and weakening the team as a whole. She could’ve damaged their miraculouses in ways that would disable their magical abilities, but not hurt them directly, by finding out more obscure ways to use miraculous magic. Come up with contrived ways to make her avoid meeting Ladybug, I don’t care, just make Mayura a fucking terrifying nemesis who makes them look like the children they are, and make us all scared of what’s going to happen when they finally meet face to face.

There was so much potential to have a Miraculous!Soundwave, omg, that would be hypercompetent and have a real, legitimate plot reason to not go out and just end the whole story because of how dangerous the Peacock is.

Instead she’s just as incompetent as he is. :(

I’m down for Shockwave! :D I’m so bad about noodling about characters, these aren’t any fuss at all to do. This is probably going to be some kind of continuity mush, because none of the continuities really dominates for me the way idw does for a lot of characters, or tfp would do for knock out, so we’ll see how coherent this is, haha

First impression: I liked his design. That was so COOL. I didn’t know who he was, really, before reading mtmte, but I knew what he looked like. It made the shadowplay arc kind of... strange, when it finished with the reveal of shockwave’s head and I was like ‘.....who?’ But his design was one of the first transformers things ever to really stick with me! TFA is really interesting, because it’s definitely a different shockwave design, but out of all the characters, it’s again one that immediately made me perk up like OuO

Impression now: He’s a... complicated one XD He’s a character where I’d have a really hard time talking about him in the present, but I can feel him overflowing with potential, and it’s SUPER interesting. In pretty much all continuities! He’s usually a character who leaves the screen and he feels like someone who’s going to be doing something afterwards, if that makes sense. That works best in TFA, since the canon never really felt finished, and I honestly totally lost track of the end of idw and haven’t steeled myself to catch up yet. For as flat as he presents, he really feels like he has lots going on under the surface, lots of calculation and planning and potential energy. I don’t know anyone else who really pings me the same way!

Favorite moment: Ooooh. Okay, it’s not that substantial a moment. But his ENTRANCE in tfp. Oh my god, I SWOON. It’s a pretty shallow favorite moment, but I love it so much. He’s got so much weight to him! That voice! That POISE! If I was going to pick something more plotty, I really love the back-and-forth with Soundwave in the lead-up to DC, where Soundwave is talking about mind-reading and is finally just like ‘anyways, FUCK THAT GUY’. That was such an interesting insight into both of them, and also... tfp and tfa wavewave are fine in whatever format, but idw wavewave takes two of the flattest, most collected characters, and makes them so deliciously pitch

Idea for a story: Okay, so this is one I need to sit down and write. But... tfa. Shockblurr. Babies. I want to take the idea that pops up in stories sometimes that autobot/decepticon couples are extra fertile and sprint off into the distance, cackling. I want to play with what a weird fucking couple they are, especially in terms of the different ways blurr learns longarm is shockwave. I’m already going to be toying with one more canon-compliant angle in the dratchet story, but I also want to go back to pre-reveal and really play around with how shockwave is good and bad at people, and how blurr really is very smart. And babies. I really love unconventional parent situations, and shockwave is a very unconventional parent, and it’s going to be so fun

Favorite relationship: .......Blurr :X It’s so delicious! Foe yay, with a side helping of long-term lies, and the question of how much of Longarm is real vs constructed. Building an entire personality from scratch is a complicated, exhausting lie to maintain in those circumstances. If Blurr likes Longarm, how much of Longarm is Shockwave? And also, like... Blurr as Shockwave’s tiny, angry boyfriend where he’s chewing out Shockwave for lying to him for so long and Shockwave is like ‘heart eye, motherfucker’. Basically, I love them as a weird relationship that everyone around them struggles to understand, but also they’re super drawn to each other. Decepticons are like ‘what do you see in him’ and autobots are like ‘what do you see in him’, and they’re not really able to answer, but there’s something

Unpopular opinion: If shockblurr, Blurr is very much in charge. Even if Shockwave is topping, Blurr is still ultimately the one calling the shots. I don’t know what it is, I’ve seen some really nice stuff with Shockwave in charge that I liked a lot, but I can never feel my way to a story idea where I’d write it. Maybe it’s that in some ways, unless the situation is legit urgent, I’d characterize tfa shockwave as very passive where blurr isn’t? But also shockwave wanting to recline back and watch blurr just to see what he’ll do. I don’t know! This is a tricky ship to talk about, haha

Favorite headcanon: IDW shockwave’s emotions aren’t GONE-gone. Whatever shadowplay is, you can’t like... exactly excise all emotions and still leave a functioning person behind. And what they leave behind is definitely a WEIRD person with weird priorities, but even before his DC meltdown thing, he’s not completely emotion-free. I want more content that pokes around the edges of the shadowplay and explores what’s left. I’m very into the shadowplay leaving someone very, very strange behind, but I just can’t get behind the idea of him being totally emotionless. But it’s hard to describe what that even means to me, so what I actually need is lots of content to explore the various angles of it for me :P
