The thought was occurring about how when we’re first introduced to Arima, he really doesn’t seem threatening. The utilization of his character is sorely wasted, although in some ways, it can be debated. Considering, this seemingly harmless looking man was the epitome of death. In fact, he seems to be more ‘sociable’ at this particular time, perhaps it was Ishida-sensei’s unknowingness of what to do with this enigma he had created. It also could have been a clever disguise to show the downfall of Arima’s humanity, the reclusive nature that seemed to take on withdrawing from all around him, while knowing he is on borrowed time. Jack itself proved to show he was a rather talkative, sometimes air-headed, but seemingly kind young man. There are even instances where he showed a deep self loathing for the slaughter he had done throughout his life, the willingness to admit in his death; he loathed who he was. The singular tear that showed he was too tender for this world while all too vicious. Kaneki’s words of Arima being beautiful was fascinating as it plays on the trope, death is beautiful. He awaits Kaneki surrounded by a mount of corpses && as the One Eyed King, he wears a crown of bones.
Though, in instances he has shown himself to be an individual that did have remorse or care for those around him, the desperation to protect Fura or how he seemingly smirks just a tad when mentioning to Hirako, you’re as bleak as I am. His passing always seemed to hit the narrative, knowing that one of the greatest predators within the series is dead was unthinkable ( and probably why I put TG:RE down for sometime only to resume). Though, the willingness to meet his demise by his own hands came as such a shocking blow, in the ability to end his own life, he was defiant to the CCG who had made them their pride && joy. He knew that his body was deteriorating, there was no chance to survive like a regular human. Instead of fighting against it, he seemed to embrace this knowledge, aligning this fabled revolution && invoking Kaneki to come take the crown - he didn’t need it anymore. While speaking about Arima out loud recently, I was surprised to realize for many he was the natural course of life, the cycle that comes with birth to the end. So many speculate, did he love Haise?
Was he capable of any emotions but indifference? Yes, but you must look for it in his micro expressions to his facial features contorting. Children of the Sunlit Garden seem to be nursed on violence, they are prone to brutal acts of sadism where it becomes apparent there is a portion of them that cannot connect to humanity. I’ve speculated a few times Arima’s apathy comes from a natural defense to endure the trauma he has resigned himself to, it wasn’t always that way but he seems naturally prone to social awkwardness ( idk about you guys, don’t ever tell a coworker, you got two hands use both to kill ghouls).  Whenever gazing upon Tokyo Ghoul even Route A, it becomes apparent how much of a strong presence he was && while we are never to know death on an intimate level, there were many who loved him, even mourning his absence. A life that he never wanted but was the only one who could endure such pain, it was only fitting he is hailed in moniker as that of nobility, untouchable even when he began to wither && decay.
Btw, this is just to make this post less angsty; don’t ever work with him.

( Arima Kishou really said, I will micro-manage you to death because you must use both hands! )

Had Kaneki died at the end of the series what type of message would that send to the audience?
It depends on what else would've happened by the end. We can speculate on what exactly Ishida planned to write but the truth is, we just... don’t know. We can’t even make a really solid educated guess, because the story went off the rails way too early in TG:re.
Let's also not forget that TG was a tragedy. Even TG:re initially played according to the same rules of a classic tragedy. The death of a tragic hero itself is not intended to send a message. I’d go as far as saying message is altogether overrated when you speak about the ending of a tragedy. The ending aims to invoke catharsis: you are shaken to the core, you grieve with the characters, and you come back cleansed. The classic definition, given by Aristotle speaks for itself, really:
Tragedy is an imitation of an action that is admirable, complete (composed of an introduction, a middle part and an ending), and possesses magnitude; in language made pleasurable, each of its species separated in different parts; performed by actors, not through narration; effecting through pity and fear the purification of such emotions.
All the messaging (or let's just say commentary, since message implies the author created the story mainly to impart some high knowledge which is, frankly, a really limiting approach) happens along the way and you are invited to author's Opinions on Things, but in no way these opinions are supposed to be absolute truth and the ending isn't supposed to teach you anything.
Think of it this way: not every story should have a happy ending. Tragedy gives you an opportunity to experience trauma in a controlled environment: both live it from the inside, with the main character, and know the exact reasons for this to happen, as the audience. Real life can only offer you hindsight and even that comes at a great price, so it's fucking awesome that literature, theater, and tragedy in particular, exist and we can enjoy them to our heart's content.

Reaction: TG:re Chapter 157
First Impressions:
Happy Monday everyone! I dragged myself out of bed early today so I could check out the new chapter and boy was it worth it. I will start off with some of my initial thoughts and get into some more in depth analysis later on.
The setting of this chapter (and the content) reminded me of  something that I could not quite put my finger on:
Tumblr media
But then I realized it was this scene from Samurai Jack:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not sure why this was on my mind, but the more I thought about it the more similar I realized the two scenes seem to be (Jack faces an internal debate between different aspects of his own personality within a serene and isolated mental landscape). Anyway, I probably woke up my neighbor with my excited exclamations when I saw that our boy is back:
Tumblr media
I was expecting a search for Kaneki chapter, but I am also happy with getting a glimpse into what is going within his mind right now. I was really surprised with how analytical he is being despite how confusing his situation is:
Tumblr media
I can’t imagine that I would be so Socratic after waking up in an unfamiliar setting with a noticeable gap in my memory. Next, I would like to point out the return of the treasured King Dash meme:
Tumblr media
Also, I almost spit out my milk when I saw Rize at the end of the chapter (I didn’t actually, but it’s a good expression):

Analysis:
I would like to start off this section by discussing symbolism (there is a ton of it this chapter). First, the colors are generally much brighter in this chapter than they have been since the awakening of Dragon:
Tumblr media
This chapter features much more use of white to fill space instead of the blacks and greys of recent of chapters. I did not realize how visually dark the art was getting until this chapter actually. Ishida subverts this lightness many times in this chapter, especially when Kaneki struggles to recall what led him to his current position:

This color contrast is especially evident in this image of all the bodies underwater is especially noticeable:
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, I don’t know enough about Japanese culture to have any profound commentary on the architecture of this chapter:
Tumblr media
The gates surrounding Kaneki’s mental temple are called Torii. As far as I know, they have to do with they serve as markers for the entrance to temples and have some connotations of purification. I am 105% sure that someone knows more about this than me and is going to post about it, so keep an eye out for that. I have a couple of other little things that stood out to me like this:
Tumblr media
It immediately reminded me of this panel from chapter 125:
Tumblr media
Sleeping in the fetal position usually alludes to vulnerability and a desire to feel safe and protected (as one does in the womb). This is pretty in line with Kaneki’ character, especially in this chapter. Next, I noticed some all to familiar imagery in the water:
Tumblr media
The swirling currents surrounding Kaneki stood out to me as large eye reminiscent of the ones covering Dragon’s body. There is plenty more to say on the subject of water symbolism. As referenced in the opening text of the chapter, the sea is often used as a symbol for something vast (or even infinite) and unknowable. Drowning is invoked by the gradual increase in depth as Kaneki runs further away from the temple:
Tumblr media
This might parallel Kaneki’s literal drowning in his own massive kagune. Water also serves as something that obscures the truth and hides dangers from us. This symbolic use of water is quite blatant here:
Tumblr media
There are probably dozens of other clever pieces of symbolism that I have not picked up on, but I am sure others will do an excellent job finding them.
Next, I would like to discuss the significance of this chapter in terms of plot and character. We have seen Kaneki enter many mental landscapes in times of great duress, and this is no exception. Historically, he emerges from these moments of introspection with a new goal or sense of self. It is important to note that this is not always a productive or healthy change (looking at you Black Reaper). Overall, I think this chapter serves as the setup for the same kind of intense emotions and self-questioning next chapter. I really want to say that Kaneki will come out of this with his best mindset yet, but that is merely a hope.
My guess is next week will be a confrontation between “Rize” and Kaneki. Her appearance at the end of this chapter is highly reminiscent of Kaneki’s mental projections during his torture at the hands of Yamori. It seems like she is filling a similar role as a representation of Kaneki’s own violence and cruelty (especially with her accusation of him being a murderer). I could see Kaneki finally facing this side of himself and trying to move forward (please) or he might keep denying and end up needing a confrontation with his friends to get him on the right track. To be completely honest, I have no idea what is going to come of any of this, but I am definitely interested in finding out.
