I am so curious as to where TGCF season 2 would end. If it ends before the flashback, then that would be so fucking short. Season 1 ended similarly to the first book of the English localization, and I initially thought Season 2 would end around the same time book 2 cut off, although I have absolutely no clue where it would end tbh

This isn't something I've really done much since I started this blog but I really wanted to discuss this week’s TGCF episode.
This is your spoiler warning!!
Heaven official's blessing season 2, episode 6 spoilers but there are also discussions of the respective scenes from volume 2 so if you haven't finished reading the novel, I'd suggest maybe not reading this post.
For context, I saw a user on twitter discuss how the donghua has been adapting Hua Cheng's display of emotions towards Xie Lian.
Source
Tumblr media
I also saw another user discuss the difference between how the novel/audio drama and the donghua have been showing Hua Cheng expressing emotions.
(I can't share the source as the OP is now private on twitter)
Tumblr media
While I haven't actually listened to the audio drama and I'm only on my first re-read of TGCF, these posts inspired me and I have thoughts and opinions that I need to share before I implode (one day it’ll happen I swear).
The scene the posters are talking about is after hcg saves xl from the heavenly Xianle palace, where they talk about what happened at paradise manor (aka xl apologising for burning down the armoury and lying to hcg about the earth master and hcg apologising for hurting xl’s arm).
In the donghua, we see hcg very obviously upset. He appears obviously and genuinely very sad about having hurt xl, even with the whole incident having been an accident. The distress in his eyes and voice is evident and clear-cut, seeming perhaps even a bit childish. In contrast, when reading this scene in the novel, while hcg definitely comes across upset, his distress appears a bit more calm and collected and he instead truly seems like a responsible adult who made a mistake and is sincerely apologetic for it to xl.
I believe that there’s multiple reasons why the dongua team chose to show hcg’s emotions in the way that they did. In my opinion, a reason why they could’ve chosen to do it this way is because of censorship. Now hear me out; clearly as a western fan I can’t speak much on Chinese censorship as I’m not highly knowledgable on the subject. However, I’d like to believe that the producing team is trying to work around the censorship laws in their own way. By making hcg’s emotions a little more over-the-top and obvious, it’s a lot easier for us as the viewer, especially queer fans that might understand queer dynamics better than others, to see and pick up on the subtext of what those exaggerated emotions mean while never having to be said out loud. And yes, we could argue that for those of us who have read the novel, it’s easier to recognise those subtle moments of vulnerability even if hcg’s reaction was made as ambiguous as it is in the book, because we have a lot more context. We have to remind ourselves that Hualian’s love story is never gonna be shown in the donghua in the same as the novel and people who are new to the story won't pick up on their relationship as easily.
As someone who hand’t heard of TGCF until Netflix licensed the donghua in my region (in 2021 I think?), I actually highly appreciate this difference in hcg’s character in the donghua. And while I don’t appreciate queerbaiting, watching season 1 made me search for the original source material and ended up with 8 very expensive books on my shelf (it took me 2 years to find volume 2 in stock somewhere…. 2 YEARS because I refuse to buy from amazon). San Lang (specifically referring to hcg’s form in volume 1 or season 1) is definitely slightly more aloof and energetic than hcg in his real form, so I do believe that his adaptation in season 1 was a lot more true to the source than season 2 seems to be.
My personal opinion is that, we need to view the donghua with a little more leniency as they have limits to the scenes they will be adapting later on (if the donghua doesn’t get dropped. Let us all pray together) and they have to make some things a little more obvious (but still no homo) to keep as much of the gay factor as they can without getting, you know, arrested. At the end of the day, it comes down to us what we prefer to consume and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with people preferring one over the other. It's valid to prefer hcg in the novels and it's valid to also enjoy hcg's donghua adaptation, even if he's different and not completely true to the OG material.
Now when it comes to the whole “making xl seem oblivious thing”…. The jury is still out on this one I’m afraid. This was the final scene of the latest episode meaning, we don’t actually know how they’re gonna adapt the following scenes and this could very heavily affect the way xl reacts from here on. An adaptation is just that and like mentioned before, the donghua team has to make decisions on how to adapt things due to censorship. And at the end of the day, I think this is an interesting take on xl’s character as one of the biggest parts of his character is how he struggles to accept love and care from other people so one can argue that… He actually is oblivious in this scene? Especially at this point in the story considering he’s known hcg for like, a week, 2 weeks max (do not quote me on that, I haven’t actually calculated, I am lazy. Point is, he hasn’t known him for very long at this point in time). And while I would for sure be a bit disappointed if he still is presented like this later on in the story, we’re still too early into it to criticise the donghua over this and future scenes that haven’t even been touched yet. It’s not in any way fair to base our opinions on the upcoming scenes on a singular 2 minute clip of Hualian’s interaction.
So, I have said my peace. Please remember that everything I’ve discussed is purely my opinion and not fact, so take this post with a grain of salt. I’d actually love to discuss this further with people so please send asks if you have anything to add!
(This is also another good post to read about the censorship stuff I talked about in this post. I like how this user phrased it.)

Once again, thank you for reading a (lengthy for once) ramble!

TGCF Animation Art Collection ~ One Flower, One Sword ~, part 3: The Music ❤️ One of the best things about the donghua is its soundtrack! From beautiful instrumental music to follow each scene, to the unforgottable opening sequence and its three ending themes, each and every song track elevates the donghua to another level ❤️ Not only are the 4 OP/ED songs presented here, but we get to see the lyrics of the opening theme for season 2 😍 And the cherry on top? The storyboards of the original opening that went unused in the final cut of the donghua 👀

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....Thanks....
Hi! This is an impossible question (i love these questions). Because I fall in love with characters so easily 😅 and I hyperfixate HARD. lol, so if you asked this 6 months ago, or ask again in another 6 months or with slightly different parameters, you'd likely get a totally different list from me. 😂 but I'll give you some of my most current top 10 character loves. And before ANYONE JUDGES ME, I'm well aware these characters being my favorites heavily implies I need therapy... I already know! Also, I'm still fairly new to anime. There is still ALOT I haven't seen. SO in no particular order, some of my top 10 favorites (and yes, I'll probably cheat and name more than 10 if i have multiple favs from one series, im not sorry):
Tumblr media
Kaladin Stormblessed/Jasnah Kholin - From Stormlight Archive (Book)
I relate to Kaladins struggle with depression alot, not only that, but his strength and courage and the way he is always ready to step up to help and protect others. Jasnah is a queen, she is such a strong woman and a role model of a character and so wise. And a total and complete badass. Smarter than everyone in the room? Yes. Blow up a man who attempts to mug her? Also yes. 😍
Tumblr media
Zuko - From ATLA (TV Show)
The ultimate redemption arc and childhood crush character! A badass, a sweetheart, an asshole but with a caring heart and that endearingly awkward struggle of him trying to make friends. He is just so cool
Tumblr media
Itachi Uchiha/Kakashi Hatake - From Naruto (Anime)
I can't pick between them and you can't make me! They are both so OP, so cool, so badass, so dramatic and have the best fight scenes and the ability to make me emotional as fuck
Tumblr media
Olivier Armstrong/Roy Mustang - From Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (Anime)
Roy's revenge arc 😳😍 lol plus we love a badass man who loves the people around him and also doesn't mind knowing when he needs to let the others around him step up! General Armstrong, man idk if I wanted to be her when I grow up or be WITH her. Probably both. She is the KING. She is the toughest in the room. She takes no bullshit. I'm obsessed with her. When her and teacher were working together for a bit? I was in love. Lol
Tumblr media
Hua Cheng- From TGCF (Donghua)
Obsessive, protective, will do anything for his love, will be his most devoted worshiper? Takes no shit? Is the strongest MF out there? Soft for the love of his life only? Is it lowkey a little toxic when I put it this way? A little. Lmfao am I in love with it anyway? Yes. He is like the definition of scary dog privilege lmao
Tumblr media
Kaz Brekker - From Six of Crows (Book)
He IS the smartest person around and he will let you know about it. And he will pull off the impossible with no one knowing how he did it. He has got plans upon plans. And not only that, but he uses a cane, has a disability, has chronic pain, has the most intense ptsd. And it's written SO WELL and it's SO RELATABLE (the chronic pain part, not the rest of his tragic as fuck backstory) and he is the most insane badass.
Tumblr media
Inosuke/Akaza - From Demon Slayer (Anime)
Inosuke is just fucking insane and I love that so much. Lmfao literally child raised by wolves, is a loveable beast type character. 😂 I just want his happiness. And I love that he is an absolute weirdo and also a badass. Akaza is just.... such a good character so far! Lol and don't think that just because he is my favorite, I'm not rooting for the demon slayers to get their revenge! I am! I just also love him and I love how he is also insane, loves being powerful and I just know his backstory is probably going to make me cry. The way this show makes me SOB all the time!
Tumblr media
Vin/Kelsier - From Mistborn (Book)
Listen, does Vin suffer as a character from "not like all the other girls" syndrome, yes. Do I LOVE everything about her and how stupidly strong and badass she is anyway? Yes. I also love that the book has HER saving the male love interest and being the white knight too instead of the other way around as per usual. Kelsier is a genius and a madman and a crazy murderer.... and I love him so much. The man has ZERO CHILL AND IS DRAMATIC TO THE CORE. I love everything about that honestly.
Tumblr media
Nico Di Angelo/Percy Jackson - From PJO series (Book)
I'm having a hard time explaining myself for all of these and not just repeating "i just love them okay?!" Lol Look, Percy is THAT guy. He is the hero. He is the perfect boyfriend. He is the ultimate crush for everyone in the series. Lol he is loyal to a literal fault. He has the darkness and rage inside him that he keeps leashed and let's out whenever he needs to. Nico is RIGHT UP THERE TOO. The powerhouses these 2 are! Nico is scary and grumpy and adorable and just needs to be loved and they've been through so much and I just need them to have the happiest of endings. Nico deserves the world. He is also scary dog privilege too. He is perfection and speaks deeply to my emo kid heart.
Tumblr media
Octavia Blake - From the 100 (TV Show)
I'm forever and Octavia sympathizer. She DID THE BEST SHE COULD WITH WHAT SHE HAD AND SHE SAVED EVERYONE SO MANY TIMES. She was the most badass. The underdog story and the most tragic ending to her romance and even when she lowkey went off the deepend, it was understandable. Lol that's my bitch, and I'm sticking with her!
....
So yeah, they all lowkey are lovable assholes here honestly. No one worry about me please, I'm fine Maybe i just like mean bitches who are hidden softies full of love super deep down 😅😏 Honestly, my husband is the worldest sweetest man ever. I promise my real life taste is not so filled with red flags like 85% of this list is. 🤣🤣 I fully know how this list could look lol

tgcf for fandom thing
ok i gotta confess i read the entirety of it in four days so i dont remember everything. because i am insane and stupid
Favourite male character: its gonna be real basic of me to say hua cheng but hes so gender...also uhh. i do enjoy shi wudu actually. quingxuan (wind master)'s older brother you will nto ask me why i tend to like characters that are older brothers.
Favourite female character: are there that many. um. ban yue + jian lan.... jian lan i love
Least favourite character: idk . i dont Dislike Characters very often actually id have to have a personal vendetta against them or somethign. even if i dislike what a character is doing the fact that they're up to shit with narrative significance makes me go "ohh good element of story" and i can still end up thinking they're neat
Favourite villain: does shi wudu count. he xuan. that one art of the third heavenly calamity arc is really good and i get chills thinking about it BUT I CANT FIND IT. IM SO UPSET anyways he xuan my beloved
Favourite ship: hualian because im basic but beefleaf . beefleaf
Favourite friendship: he xuan and hua cheng
Funny scene: something about xie lian dialing up hua cheng because the Big God Dude TM asked him to & hua cheng gets suspicious so he has sqx call him up in the bath to see if hes ok
Saddest scene: the scene in the like fall of xianle arc or something where xie lian has all these people kill him over and over so they get immunity..that fucked me up. also when hes kinda just like lying there in a crater and people ignore him in visible distress so he's stewing in misery+hate but eventually someone does actually help him & just that one person being nice was enough to change his mind
Favourite arc: third calamity/black water arc is good. also the sorta. final arc with god of gods dude . that one's funky
Favourite song: uhhh donghua op theme maybe? ive actually seriously forgotten

hii i was wondering if you have any other cdrama recs that's similar in tone to cql that's not shl? it doesn't have to be adapted from danmei either. i've tried ashes of love but the generous use of cgi kinda threw me off. i tried handsome siblings too, and i found that i LOVE wuxia as a genre but the pace feels a little all over the place so i didn't finish it either. any kind of help would be much appreciated!
I don’t watch as much cdrama as I would like… I think @baoshan-sanren @wuxian-vs-wangji @wuyus, @minmoyu, and @drwcn all watch more than I do i think.... i’m just not good at focusing on ANYTHING tbh. ooof.
This post got long. TL;DR: i’d probably say try out Ever Night, Legend of Fei, and Love and Redemption in that order.
I recommend Nirvana in Fire a TON but it’s not the same -- much heavier but the pacing is AMAZING.
Joy of Life and Sleuth of Ming Dynasty are both very good so far but i’m not done with them. They’re not really wuxia. Joy of Life is like a isekai.  and Sleuth is semi-wuxia but period specific and case solving. Lots of food.
You might enjoy movies such as Painted Skin and Yin Yang Master: Dream of Eternity.
Also check out some danmei based donghuas. you might have fun. For a much more rambley list... see after the cut
AND! i almost forgot!!!! check out mydramalist. a lot of shows are listed there and maybe you can see what you like. i’ll probably watch anything as long as it’s well done... or pretty enough... hahaha.
That said, since Nov 2019 I have watched/half heartedly paid attention to while playing phone games:
Love and redemption – this one was ok. It was almost really good and then kinda fell flat for me. I don’t think I’d watch it again but I did like the setting and a lot of the premise.
And the winner is love – this one is fun! But the first 12 eps are slow and I have a hard time caring. The rest get a bit better. I didn’t hate it. I did like how they randomly killed off characters so that was good. Flirty Luo Yunxi with a fan was definitely a perk. If you like him, I recommend.
Ever Night (I) – OH! This one is a ton of fun. I think its intricacy level and setting styles and storytelling pacing isn’t too far off from CQL’s. but it’s only S1. WORTH IT, imo… but S2 is so different I couldn’t make it past ep 1
Nirvana in Fire – AMAZING. BEST FREAKING CHINESE DRAMA I’VE EVER SEEN. PERIOD. HANDS DOWN. MIND BLOWING. But it IS INTENSE and not really like cql. It’s fun but much much much heavier. I technically first watched this in 2016 but I rewatched it this year so it’s on the list.
Love o2o – not bad. Boring. Not much plot. The main ship are cute enough, I guess. Something to watch in the bkgd.
King’s Avatar – I seriously only watched this to see Yang Yang on my non-gif-making screen whenever I was waiting for things to happen in photoshop. It’s ok. Cute. Feels like a sports anime. Is an esports show.
Legend of Fei – this might be your best bet on something close to CQL. The plot, imo, is a bit contrived… and it really kinda feels like a shonen manga if I’m gonna be honest… maybe a shonen manga crossed with a season of super sentai.
Dating in the Kitchen – cute, straight, modern romance. The girl is only a TINY bit annoying. She’s a chef and spunky. It was fun.
Eternal Love – not terrible. Better than ashes of love. I don’t really like yang mi that much…
Ashes of Love – do not recommend. Unless you adore Luo Yunxi. I also don’t love Yang Zi… so that doesn’t help. I haven’t seen her in a role where I didn’t want to smack her yet. (but my sample size is 2… so there’s that)
Lost Tomb Season 1 this was fun? again, something to only half pay attention to. cliche. tang yan is hot in it. and yang yang too... but not really enough of yang yang for me... ope.
(and of course, CQL and SHL)
I’m assuming if you’re asking about cql, you’ve looked at tgcf, mdzs, and svsss animations. Have you looked up the Qian Qiu donghua? I think it’s call “shan he tong bei”… but I could be wrong. @hunxi-after-hours blogs about it a lot. Worth checking out. I loved the novel. Currently I’m watching can ci pin on bilibili.
I’m in the middle of:
Guardian – I like it even if it’s sometimes a bit cringy
Sleuth of Ming Dynasty – this one is FUN. I should pay more attention
Advance Bravely – I watch this after I drink booze and then only if I am streaming it as a group watch on discord. It’s danmei and a hot mess of a show. Do not watch without emotional support. Do not watch as a serious show.
Joy of Life – this one is serious but good so far. I’m scared to get too far because no word on S2 and I was burned with Ever Night. It’s really good so far though… I’m only only ep 7ish.
Ode to Joy – the cast is so good: Liu Tao, Wang Kai, Wang Ziwen, Jin Dong… but I just can’t get into it.
Older shows I watched that i can remember:
My Sunshine: modern romance. Sad and melancholy in tone. Not like cql at all. But!! Luo Yunxi is in it briefly. And he is styled so poorly it’s just sad. And kinda funny. Tang Yan and Wallace Chung are great in it. I enjoyed it a lot. (granted, this was 2014/2015 and I might’ve been some various levels of depressed at the end of grad school… )
Princess Pearl: wuxia-ish. Zhao wei skyrocketed to fame with this show. It was fun. Qing dynasty to prepare you eyes for the queues… but it’s a lot of fun. If you’re a tea snob (like my dad was and now I am), you’ll be pissed about a character claiming dragonwell tea is from taihu… but that’s really just my own neurosis. I liked the spunky MC and her bff. Very nostalgic for me
Tiger Mom: Hilarious modern family/slice of life drama about raising kids in china. i loved it... but i love the two leads? one of which is zhao wei of princess pearl fame.
CCTV’s version of Romance of Three Kingdoms (1994), Journey to the West (1986), and Dream of Red Mansion (1987) are all amazing and cultural touchstones… but no… I’m rambling. I should recommend this but that might be 90% of my nostalgia and cultural feels speaking. Nothing like cql… I should also recommend a good version of Outlaws of the Marsh… but I don’t remember having any really grab me as a kid. Ope.
Wuxia shows based on Jin Yong novels (there are multiple versions of these, usually and 100% were wuxia staples for 80s/90s kids and even my parents’ generation)
Legend of the Condor Heroes: classic. Iconic. Watch this to get a lot of Chinese references
Return of the Condor Heroes: shifu/disciple taboo trope, I liked it ok. Not my favorite. I did like a lot of the wuxia world building
Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre: good main character whump, main character takes a while to show up though… I didn’t like how it felt like a harem anime for a bit… and the ML doesn’t show up for a while…
Proud Smiling Wanderer: this one I loved. Also good MC whump. Uh… ok. I like whump… *facepalm* and I don’t remember that much more of it but I did read it twice almost two decades ago and liked it… even if I didn’t like the eunuch related weird stuff and that definitely didn’t age well… it was a good story…
And i never did get into Deer and Cauldron. I read 3/5 to 4/5 of the novel, got really annoyed with the lack of morality of the MC and quit. it was fun but i had no desire to watch the show if couldn’t even stomach the novel.

I never watched the TGCF Japanese dub because I’ve already watched it in the original Chinese, but can somebody tell me if the JP dub was somehow able to make it gayer than it already is? (coz yknow, no more censorship)
coz if yes, I’m gonna start watching it now
