Behold, an Ongoing Project! 📯

I've been wanting to compile this for a while, instead of frantically scrambling for references every time I sit down to write — I thought it would be fun to share! I'm mostly tackling this from the perspective of a fanfic author, and also as someone who's very into viking era-through-renaissance men's fashion and armor.

I think it's really fun to look at the decisions that were made strategically (to maintain actor mobility, for example), because they looked cool (Faramir's pointless hinged piece on his helmet), or because they were actually period-accurate (gambesons under chainmail, or worn as armor by themselves!). I'm also taking it as a chance to point out what these garments say about their owners!

I say this in the document itself, but there's no need to credit me if you reference/use the doc for your own writing ^_^ this is some of my favorite stuff to discuss, so just getting to share it is cool enough to me.

I'm purely focusing on human characters to start, because of the more solid real-world parallels, but I'm happy to add on to this if there are other characters you'd like to see!!

I never thought of it before, but there are some interesting potential parallels between Valacar of Gondor and Thengel of Rohan. They each went off to live in an allied foreign land, they each married a high-ranking woman of that land and had children born there, and both were recalled home and faced resistance to incorporating the culture of the land left behind.

I have thought it interesting that the text is so emphatic that Eldacar is Númenórean (and lived 200+ years) and Théoden is so thoroughly one of the Rohirrim (in addition to LOTR, Tolkien excludes him from his discourse on descendants of Elves). Their ancestry is quite similar, but that doesn't really matter.

They do have more important things in common, though—both were born in their mothers' countries, both had princely fathers who probably would have rather stayed away from home, and while the Rohirrim aren't gross blood purists in the same way as Castamir, some of them disliked the Gondorian influence Thengel and Morwen brought with them. It'd be interesting if there were other parallels as well—was Théoden always called Théoden? Etc.

something so special about the house of théoden and the children of éomund, about the country of rohan. none of the grand numenorian heritage of gondor, edoras nothing like the elaborate halls of the white city. but they have endured, and survived, and been there to aid others. to history théoden may be a “lesser son of greater sires,” but he was there. he did not sit in his halls counting the hallowed names of ancestors, he fought alongside his people.
