You know what? It’s oversharing time

I’ve never really had a safe home consistently. I lived half time with my mom (who is fucking amazing and did everything she could for us) and my dad (who did damage that still causes me problems. I had to cut him out of my life and move across the country)

I had a string of shitty apartments with decent room mates, but we couldn’t afford much, and there a lot of bad areas in the city I grew up.

I had a weird duplex with a string of friends, exploitive assholes, and people who deliberately terrorized me. This was in a very bad part of town. It was (I guess still is) a block away from where a pretty famous scene in Breaking Bad was filmed

The last place I lived before I moved away was actually about six blocks from the car wash that was in that show. What nobody talks about is that they found a dismembered body in the apartments behind the Walmart, about half a mile from there.

This is the first time in my whole life where I have a home. I go to sleep in the same place every night, I feel so good coming home. (I am literally, constantly, every fucking second afraid to lose it). I have a loving partner and we’re have a super cute, grumpy old doggo and huge rhododendron bushes in our yard.

And I have a plum tree

I have, in my yard, a golden plum tree. The fruit is honestly too good to be true (I didn’t post about it till now because I was afraid to jinx it)

You peel the skin off with your fingers and juice is already running down your wrists and they are just so so so sweet

I squeezed a bunch in my hands with some blackberries and made juice the other night, then we froze some and ate it like ice cream

I think I feel like a kid but, not again. I didn’t feel like this as a kid

(You always make me smile) I love all flowers!! I get unreasonably excited about flowers in general.. it’s hard to have a favorite but I particularly love keeping plants that are fragrant, perennial, or edible (or, in some cases, exciting combinations of the three)

Here’s where it gets good: my fun facts also run into lots of my favorite flowers!

Order Rosales contains 9 families and more than 7,500 species which include familiar friends like roses, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, mint, cannabis, apples, cherries, plums, and figs! (and hawthorns, don’t eat those)

Now admittedly taxonomy is just a structure we use to categorize things that exist- it is imperfect BUT helpful in forming understanding of relations, similarities, and differences between organisms

So back to Order Rosales! This order is often characterized by perfect flowers with petals in groups of five, simple (often saw edged) leaves with stipules (where more leaf stalks can come out), abundant pollen and nectar, thorny or hairy stems, and often bear fruit.

A particularly fun aspect of many/most/(maybe all?) plants in Order Rosales is that they can be cloned from cuttings!

I really love many plants in Rosales, and enthusiastically keep many of them including a gorgeous Mirabelle plum tree that I inherited and love with all my heart

Thanks for asking about the buns! Most of the babies born in May have grown up and dispersed from the nest, we have somewhere between 4-8 that live permanently around, although now that the semester is over I’m usually getting up too late to see them in the mornings.

Mostly we see them in the evening, but sundown is nearly ten most nights so I’ve been lazy about pics

there’s a large plant that overhangs my driveway. At this time of year it gets covered in blobs of white flowers that drop petals in a crazy storm any time you brush against the plant

naturally I go shake it and stand under it daily

was feeling blue before work so gave myself a good petal storm and headed in, having shaken (I thought) all the petals out of my hair

only I was wearing my big soft cookie monster jacket (which has large, floppy pockets)

anyhow I got into work and reached into my pocket for my keys to find… petals. like fistfuls of them

I get to my classroom and start emptying my pockets into the trash only to realize that I seem to have tracked a visible trail of petals in on the carpet. Hansel and Gretal would have been stoked.

this is JUST in time for my (lovely, kind, very patient) coworker to walk up, see my petal tracks, open her mouth, and see me just dump two big fistfuls of petals all over the floor instead of into the trash

… this is the third similar incident

people are beginning to suspect that I just leave a trail of flowers wherever I go
