Before Jade knew it, night was falling over the deep woods cove. She had seen a small cottage and thought that might be the home of the barefooted man she had seen earlier. But there were no lights, so Jade started to make her way back to the bramble bush tunnel. Suddenly, she saw a lit campfire and she felt drawn to it. The barefooted man was sitting next to the campfire and this time, Jade approached him.

Jade (cautiously): “Hello, I’m sorry to disturb you... I’m Jade.”

Man (smiling): “Hello Jade, don’t worry, you’re not disturbing. Do you want to join me? I’m Thadeus. How do you like my cove?”

Jade felt her cheeks turn red. She had been exploring the cove without even knowing if she was trespassing or not. She wanted to apologise, but Thadeus shook his head, saying he didn’t get many visitors and that he had been amused by Jade’s wonder and honest enjoyment as he had seen her venture further into the cove. 

They chatted until well into the night, about wildlife, plants, herbalism and the joys of solitude. When Thadeus ran out of logs to fuel the campfire, Jade thanked him for the great evening and said goodbye. On her way to the bramble bush tunnel, Jade noticed a strange blue light hovering between the pine trees. Mesmerised by the soft glow, she walked over to take a closer look. She took a few moments to enjoy watching the glowing insect before she finally left the secret cove.
