Daughter-in-law From Hell by Ramesh Thakur
"But what if the interview has damaged the prospects of this happening? Now that would be karma."
The cruel mother-in-law is a familiar and popular trope all over the world, not far behind the stepmother as a proxy for the evil witch. Curiously, there’s no alternative, counter-balancing trope of a cynical, calculating and manipulative daughter-in-law who rents asunder the existing close bonds in a family.
I was born in India after independence and grew up in a free republic. Even while absorbing many of the idioms and iconic stories from our British political-education legacy, we were also socialised into the anti-British strains of the independence struggle and viewed many familiar historical milestones through completely different lens. This came together in a popular explanation for why the sun never set on the British Empire: because even God would not trust an Englishman in the dark. In the second half of the last century, that ambivalence was transferred to the Americans and best captured in the placard being waved by the anti-Vietnam War protestor in the streets of Calcutta during my university days there: ‘Yankee! Go home – and take me with you’.
On the other hand, I left Calcutta (since renamed Kolkata) for Canada and in the course of my wanderings have lived and worked, among other places, in New Zealand and Australia and collected citizenships in all three. This means I have sworn the oath of loyalty to Her Majesty three times in her capacity as the Queen of Canada, New Zealand and Australia. I feel impelled accordingly to defend her and ‘the Firm’ against the attacks from Meghan Markle in the infamous interview with Oprah Winfrey. Full disclosure: I have not watched the interview, not even a minute of it, and have no intention of doing so. My comments are based on accounts of it in print.
To start with, the Queen’s life is a story of duty to country and the multiracial Commonwealth carried out with unfailing grace, dignity and decorum. Between the Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex, who does and does not fit in with this lifestyle? To ask the question is to answer it. Markle gives the impression she had a glamourised vision of what marrying into the royal family would be like. The measure of self-discipline and onerous restrictions on independence and personal freedoms proved too suffocating, which is easy enough to understand. The press can indeed behave with no sense of moral compass, violate peoples’ privacy – who can forget the phone-hacking scandals – and turn viciously on someone. But the search for privacy taking her to a tell-all interview with the Queen of TV that turned out to be a self-indulgent settling of scores? A couple that has complained loudly about press intrusions was happy to wash the family laundry in public for millions of viewers. Their remarks and ‘revelations’ were calculated to inflict the maximum damage on her husband’s family. No matter what the provocation, that is unforgiveable. She has a long history of manipulating the media to boost her celebrity status. She can make truly awful accusations against her in-laws. No proof required. The warmth with which she was welcomed by the family – remember the touching scene when Prince Charles walked her down the wedding aisle owing to the absence of her father? – as well as press and people, makes the charge of racism implausible.
Why say things without substantiation that will make the estrangement from his family irreparable? Because she names no names, provides no context and fails to specify exactly what was said, the entire royal family is smeared and that too on the flimsiest of reasoning. This is not courageous but cowardly. Someone wondered about the skin colour of the child while he was still in the womb. Well cry me a river in a $20 million mansion in Santa Barbara. As an inter-racial family that is increasingly common in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the US, we wondered the same about our children and speculated on it on multiple occasions. And repeated the experience with the next generation. As soon as this article is done, I’m off to enrol myself in cultural re-education class to exorcise this deep-seated unconscious racism. So, sorry, but until and unless we are provided with some context and specificity about who made the remark, that sounds like interested curiosity rather than malicious racism.
Along with racism, mental health and thoughts (ideation, in the current jargon) of suicide have been weaponised by wannabe victims in the proliferating grievance culture. I’m afraid for once my instincts are similar to those of Piers Morgan. President Joe Biden has praised Markle’s courage for talking openly about feeling suicidal. But the charge that the pleas for help of a five-month pregnant Duchess of Sussex expressing suicidal thoughts would be dismissed with the comment that it ‘wouldn’t be good for the institution’ is, on the face of it, implausible. Once again, we need more specificity and context. On its own, this simply doesn’t ring true. Who was that callous palace official? What stopped the couple from seeking treatment directly from the several mental health charities with which they are connected?
In the interview Markle claimed her son not being a prince ‘would be different from protocol’. Displaying the racial prism through which she views everything, Markle said Archie is ‘the first member of colour in this family not being titled in the same way that other grandchildren would be’. This is factually wrong as well as incendiary. Someone so conscious of titles should know that her son cannot be called a prince at present. Under existing rules going back to 1917, the titles of prince and princess are limited to children of the monarch, children of the monarch’s sons and the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales. In other words, Archie cannot be prince with the Queen as monarch but will be due the title if and when Prince Charles becomes King.
"But what if the interview has damaged the prospects of this happening? Now that would be karma."

Unmasking Honor Killings: A Socio-Legal Perspective
A few days ago, I sat in my dimly lit room , my heart racing as the story unfolded on the screen. Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter portrayed star-crossed lovers, Parthavi and Madhukar, who dared to defy societal norms. Their love transcended caste boundaries, but it came at a steep price—the wrath of Parthavi’s family. As the scenes unfolded, I couldn’t tear my eyes away. The haunting music, the stolen glances, and the palpable tension—all of it echoed the pain of countless real-life couples.
Tumblr media
How can love be a crime?
Why do families prioritize honor over their children’s happiness?
When will society break free from these shackles?
And then it hit me—I had to write about this. Not just as an academic exercise, but as a plea for change. The movie “Dhadak” became my catalyst, igniting a fire within me to expose the darkness of honor killings.
Introduction
Honor killings, a dark reality in many societies, continue to haunt us. These acts of violence are perpetrated against individuals—often women—who defy societal norms by marrying against their families’ wishes, having pre-marital relationships, or seeking divorce. In India, honor killings are particularly prevalent, impacting families, communities, and the fabric of our society.
Tumblr media
Understanding Honor Killings
Definition: Honor killings involve the murder of a family member, usually a woman, due to perceived dishonor or shame brought upon the family.
Triggers: Reasons for honor killings include inter-caste or inter-religious marriages, pre-marital relationships, and even allegations of adultery.
Gender Bias: While both men and women can be victims, women bear the brunt of this violence. The mere perception of dishonoring the family can lead to a brutal attack on their lives.
Tumblr media
Socio-Legal Context
Morality: Indian society adheres to a caste-based stratification system, where caste and gender identity at birth determine one’s status. Transgressing these boundaries disrupts the social order.
Article 21: The Constitution of India guarantees the right to life and personal liberty. Honor killings directly violate this fundamental right.
Legal Framework: Although there’s no specific law addressing honor killings, existing provisions under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) can be invoked to prosecute offenders.
Case Studies
Rajkumar and Deepa: A Dalit-Thakur couple faced brutal violence after fleeing their hometown to marry. Deepa’s family couldn’t accept their love, leading to Rajkumar’s tragic death.
Tumblr media
Kaushalya and Shankar: Despite opposition, this inter-caste couple married. However, they were attacked in broad daylight by Kaushalya’s family.
Tumblr media
In the last 15 years, over 30000 men, women, and children have been killed in the name of "Honour"
Killing innocent love is not Honourable. It is an act of cowardice and a crime against humanity.
CONCLUSION
In the face of honor killings, our society must confront this issue head-on. It’s time to raise our voices, challenge entrenched norms, and pave the way for a more compassionate and just world—one where love is not a currency that costs lives.

In the midst of the controversy surrounding a scene in Oppenheimer, where the titular character is depicted engaging in sexual activity while reciting verses from an ancient Sanskrit scripture, purportedly the Bhagavad Gita, Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut has stepped forward to praise Christopher Nolan’s biographical thriller film.
Taking to social media on Monday, Kangana lauded the movie as “Christopher Nolan’s best work so far” and expressed her admiration for the part in the film referencing Bhagavad Gita and Lord Vishnu. “Most important film of our time… I am so excited I just didn’t want it to end… It has everything I deeply love, I am passionate about physics and politics… For me, this was like a cinematic orgasm… beyond wonderful,” she noted while sharing a selfie video.
“The theme of the film is that when your nationalism rises, it precedes your religion; but when your humanity rises, it precedes your nationalism and you become a problem for the system. And the system that built you, starts disintegrating you. My favourite part is the reference to Srimad Bhagavad Gita and Lord Vishnu when he channelises his inner Vishnu. Go watch it… it’s a lovely film,” the Queen actor said in the video.
J Robert Oppenheimer, regarded as ‘the father of the atom bomb’, had learnt Sanskrit and was said to be influenced by the Bhagavad Gita. In the film, Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy, is shown having sex with psychologist Jean Tatler (Florence Pugh) as she asks him to read a verse from what appears to be a Sanskrit book, whose title or cover is not visible.
The scene involving Gita in Oppenheimer had irked a section of social media users, who demanded the removal of the sequence from Christopher Nolan’s latest film.
Uday Mahurkar, information commissioner, Government of India, wrote an open letter to Nolan, terming the scene a “disturbing attack on Hinduism” and appealed to the director to remove the scene worldwide.
“We urge, on behalf of billion Hindus and the timeless tradition of lives being transformed by revered Geeta, to do all that is needed to uphold the dignity of their revered book and remove this scene from your film across the world. Should you choose to ignore this appeal it would be deemed as a deliberate assault on Indian civilisation. Eagerly await needful action (sic)” Mahurkar, founder of Save Culture Save India Foundation, wrote.
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur has sought an explanation from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on why it cleared the movie in its present form. According to sources, Thakur has demanded accountability from the CBFC, which functions under the aegis of the I&B Ministry, regarding clearing the movie with the controversial scene, which has hurt the sentiments of a section of the Hindu community.
The Dhaakad actor’s comments come a day after she locked horns with former Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy after the latter questioned her Y-plus security status. He tweeted, “The SPG knows, and has kept a register of her movements. I wonder why since it is no business of SPG to track Bollywood stars. In her case, on a special dispensation, she has a high level of security provided.”
Kangana replied, “I am not just a Bollywood star sir, I am also a very vocal and concerned citizen, I was the target of political malice in Maharashtra, at my expense nationalists could make a government here. I also spoke about tukde gang and strongly condemned Khalistani groups. I am also a filmmaker, writer and producer and my next production Emergency involves operation Bluestar… there is evident treat to my life hence I requested for extended security… Is there something wrong in this Sir?”'

IND Vs NZ World Cup 2023: Shami’s Five-Wicket Haul Limits New Zealand to 273
Shami takes 5 wicket against New Zealand
Team India held New Zealand to 273 in their ODI World Cup 2023 encounter on Sunday thanks to Mohammed Shami’s five-wicket haul. Given the opportunity to bat first, New Zealand lost two wickets quickly but was able to get back into the game because to the explosive combination of Daryl Mitchell (130) and Rachin Ravindra (75). Taking four wickets for India, Shami Acquired two wickets by Kuldeep Yadav. The other two wicket-takers were Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah.
India will be chasing for the sixth straight game after Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bowl first. Throughout the first five overs, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj held New Zealand pinned, with the latter dismissing Devon Conway in the fourth over.
Ravindra and Mitchell’s Partnership Steadies New Zealand’s Innings
Mohammed Shami dismissed Will Young with his first delivery of the encounter during the first ten overs, which were dominated by the Indian seamers. The BlackCaps’ innings have since been stabilised by Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell. Then, by targeting the spinners, especially Kuldeep Yadav, they put pressure back on India. In his first three overs, Kuldeep ultimately gave up 32 run.
Both players achieved fifty runs in the end, and their relationship flourished beyond the 100-run barrier. With the spinner bowling ten overs in a row and finishing with figures of 0/48, India were obliged to use up all of Jadeja’s overs.
Since Shardul Thakur was dropped to make room for Shami and Suryakumar Yadav in lieu of the injured Hardik Pandya, India now lacks a sixth bowling option.

When Bumrah dropped Mitchell at the boundary and the ball crossed for four, the duo’s partnership finally reached 150. In the 34th over, Shami finally put a stop to India’s suffering when he dismissed Ravindra for 75 off 87 balls.
Shortly after, Kuldeep removed New Zealand captain Tom Lathan from the game, but Mitchell persisted. Ultimately, he achieved his sixth century in an ODI.

Bihar, a state with a rich history and diverse culture, has been a hotspot for caste-based politics and societal divisions. The caste system, rooted in ancient Hindu scriptures and societal norms, has evolved over centuries, with Brahmins at the top and Dalits at the bottom. The emergence of caste-based politics in Bihar emerged as a response to social and economic disparities, with leaders like Karpoori Thakur and Lalu Prasad Yadav playing pivotal roles. Nitish Kumar, the former Chief Minister of Bihar, aimed to address the challenges posed by caste dynamics and envisioned a Bihar where development and governance took precedence over caste-based identity politics. He initiated a caste-based survey to gain deeper insights into the caste composition and socio-economic status of the people of Bihar, covering both urban and rural areas of the state.
Caste-based surveys in India are guided by various legal provisions, including the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950, the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950, the Census Act, 1948, and the Right to Information Act, 2005. These acts ensure ethical, accurate, and respect for the rights and dignity of individuals from all castes. The implementation of Nitish Kumar's caste-based survey faced challenges such as the large population of Bihar, logistical difficulties in reaching remote and marginalized communities, and resistance from certain caste groups. To overcome these issues, the government enlisted local community leaders and organizations and conducted awareness campaigns. The data collected from the Nitish Kumar survey provided valuable insights into the socio-economic conditions of different caste communities in Bihar, shaping policies and programs aimed at addressing the specific needs of marginalized groups. The survey data led to targeted development initiatives, reservation and representation, welfare schemes, and reduced discrimination. Post-survey analysis revealed significant changes in caste dynamics in Bihar, including shifts in political alliances, increased social mobility, empowerment of women, and changes in identity. These developments highlight the importance of addressing the needs of marginalized communities and promoting social mobility.
Nitish Kumar's comprehensive survey on caste dynamics in Bihar has significantly impacted the state's socio-political evolution. Despite challenges in implementation, the survey has reduced socio-economic disparities and fostered a more inclusive society. The lessons learned can be valuable for other Indian states facing similar caste-related issues.
