Ah cool! What manner of game does Gauntlet Queen (and her fellow Queens) originate from? Shooter? RPG? Platformer? All of the above? None of the above? An intentionally vague genre for greater creative freedom?

Well! I've given this far too much thought so here's some but not all details:

Gauntlet Queen is from a colourful but harsh cyberpunk action RPG with alternating platforming and combat sections. The combat focusses on quick movement and gunplay, not unlike. say, Devil May Cry, but it's less about keeping your foes stunlocked with flashy combos and more about dodging until the right moment to strike. She is a mid-game boss and joins the player's side once she realises she can't win.

Spectral Queen is from an alternate, spooky-themed version of GQ's game, so the gameplay is the same. In this story, GQ died prior to the events of the game, and her rebel gang has devolved into a cult trying to bring her back to life. They are repeatedly foiled over the course of the game, and only succeed after the game is over. She is a post-game secret boss and as such the hardest boss in the game.

Coral Queen is an underwater boss in a classic 3D platformer. Given that it's underwater, the game features floaty physics during the encounter. The player needs to anticipate which ruined arch she will emerge from and jump on top of her as she passes. She is the first boss fight, so she's the weakest Queen so far.

Broadcast Queen guards a door in an otherworldly and confusing first person exploration game. The game simply revolves around interacting with objects to solve puzzles and delve deeper into the strange world. Like all other bosses in the game, Broadcast does not fight the player directly, and instead tests their knowledge of previous mechanics with a series of timed puzzles. Her only physical interaction with the player is a hard flick to the forehead which transports them to her boss room. She is the second to last boss, so her puzzles have a tight time limit and are quite tough.

🫓 What is your most popular fic?

Hands down, it's definitely my Dark Souls fic, Lions Walk With Wanderers! I started writing it on a whim one day because after beating the first game, my brain magnetized to Ornstein and was like "okay but what if you didn't have to kill him???" and then Rowena was born and now they're on this wild journey together!

It's the fic that got me to post my work again after so many years, and it also led me to meet so so many lovely people. I'm currently wrapped up in some other projects, but I hope to return to that fic soon. Their story means so much to me ❤️

Before the next episode comes out, I have a few thoughts on Natalia and her role to share.

At the moment I'm not worried about her at all. Buck will date her for a while, or at least try to date her, but everything about her just feels too pointed, too much parallel to Ali and Ana

She asks him out for coffee because she is interested in his experiences from the lightning strike, and I respect her for seeking out a first-person account when the opportunity presents itself to her, but the romantic aspect of their encounter is very obviously secondary to her (and from personal experience I know this kind of interest makes irl for an interesting party conversation, an awkward first date and then never talking again🤪)

Then Buck says "She sees me" when all we know about Natalia is her interest in his experience with death, and Eddie says "Really? Dating someone you rescued? You know that never ends well."

It might just be me, who spent most of my early time in this fandom analyzing and defending Ali's importance in the narrative, but this just evokes strong memories of her in me.

When Ali left Buck, what she said was "That was one day... one day of my life, Evan. It's every day for you. I'm just starting to really understand what that means." and I feel like Natalia might just be in for a rude awakening along these lines of her own.

Buck feels like she sees him, but in the moment she sees only one part of him. And even that part... I'm not sure she's aware of what it means for Buck's life that he had this experience and his other near-death experiences. She's closer to death in her line of work than Ali was, but her job is preparing people for a death that they know is coming. The danger Buck faces is unpredictable, there is no way she can prepare for that.

Of course, people can learn and be okay with that, but at the moment I feel like we're heading for another temporary love interest, who will further along Buck's arc and play into the themes of this show, just like Ali did.

After all, as Athena said in season one: "What a life we chose. No one on the outside can understand it." And as Tommy said in 'Bobby Begins Again': "Having the scars impresses women, getting 'em freaks 'em out."
