So Sam can’t be all sharp edges. What aspects of him are kinder and gentler?

I LOVE this question so much. Thank you for asking.

Sam indeed has a lot of hard edges, but also quite a few soft ones if you’re looking in the right places.

1. He’s a closeted cuddler and certified Little Spoon. When Sam is at his Sammiest he’s a human lap cat.

2. He is unnervingly observant and his brain is a steel trap for personal details. If you make a comment about something you like, or a thing that you want, in his presence, he will remember. If he encounters it in the wild and it’s within his power to obtain, you’ll probably wind up with it. And he’s confused if you’re overly surprised or touched by this.

…of course he doesn’t always use this skill for good. He also remembers the things that drive you BATSHIT and keeps that info handy, too. I have not pinpointed the specific incident that instigates the Great T-Shirt War with Garrus, but I am positive Sam starts it, by buying him a t-shirt that says something like, “Expel 10’s Biggest Fan,” when Garrus insists they’re the worst band to ever exist at dinner one night. This catalyzes an ongoing saga of attempting to buy each other the most obnoxious t-shirts imaginable, that lasts the rest of their lives.

3. If you want to Do a Thing that he does not want to do, but it is important to you, Sam will Do the Thing with you. Every time. Will he complain? Yes, but mostly token resistance. He is willing to make himself extraordinarily uncomfortable for the happiness of others, and he rather enjoys the opportunity to experience something he isn’t interested in or actively dislikes through the eyes of someone who cares about it.    

4. As someone who didn’t grow up with much exposure to animals or wildlife, he wants to pet EVERYTHING. One of his life goals is to see an armadillo in person, take a picture with it, and send it to Wrex with the caption, "it was great running into you the other day." No one knows why he thinks this is so fucking funny.

5. While he and Kaidan do not have kids, Sam actually quite likes kids, and they fucking love him. Horsing around with them gives him a chance to reclaim some of the childhood he never got. Krogan occasionally make ‘pilgrimages’ with their offspring to see Commander Shepard, and he gets a huge kick out of throwing them around in the lake and climbing trees at the orchard, things most of them do not get to do on Tuchanka, and things he didn't get to do as a kid.

Yay thank u for asking! Let's talk about Hot Pink Ring Pops, specifically where the idea came from and my favorite little bits ^^

The Origins

The entire thing actually came from a fan stage video where they alluded to things in Vegas. @eyes-likepilotlights and I, like very hinged very rational beings, decided they got married.

And thus the fic was born, as shown below:

My Favorite Bit: The Ring Pop

While I obviously LOVE Lando lamenting about being a worm, my personal favorite was the inclusion of the ring pops -- for two reasons.

First, on my last birthday I (somehow) acquired ten ring pops and took some really iconic photos in an arcade with my fingers DECKED OUT. My friends and I were losing it the entire time, it's an incredibly fond memory for me.

Second, resident non-American @eyes-likepilotlights was VERY lost at the idea of a ring pop???? Which blew my mind. Therefore, as I wrote my silly little fic about my silly little non-American's fucking around in Vegas, I realized it was a perfect moment to make sure they truly appreciated the finest bits of our culture.

As an aside, orange ring pops do exist, but Lando seemed like a hot pink kinda guy???????

Other Fun Lore:

I actually wrote this entire fic with none of the usual "take this line out, cut this scene, move this line here" nonsense! So nothing got left on the cutting room floor -- everything you see was as originally written

I'm a big fan of House, and therefore I had to include a reference

I vaguely wanted to write Lando returning to the grid in his oversized jacket, but I realized I couldn't quite nail that AND get the awkward hospital proposal. The sacrifices we must make :(((

lmao i completely forget what i write after i post so i had to go back and reread my fics to even remember what happened XD

so the scene in move heaven and earth where it's ghost's pov of the facility infiltration (the one with the two feral werewolves), i had to keep writing and rewriting the entire scene because i forgot how many characters their were XD i changed the number like five times while editing because new characters kept just appearing and im like "what the fuck are you even doing??? can you not count???" to myself sdkhfsd but i finally got an accurate number in the end!!!

as for hell hath no fury, the whole bar scene were the werecat (his name is pvt crowne, hes my son and will be appearing in later fics alongside sgt alvarez) tries to steal ghost's mask because of a dumb hazing ritual was probably my favorite to write, mainly because its soaps big "oh" moment. and like, trying to write a romantic moment like that when youre aroace and have never written romance before was hard! and scary! but i think i managed pretty damn well :D plus, the little hints that ghost has already had his big realization and is just waiting for soap to catch up XD

i love writing unreliable narrators and giving little hints and foreshadowing like that ^-^

also, the unplanned sky motif in hhnf was really fun to recognize after the fact. like omg! i did a theme! thats awesome!

speaking of famous among horn players 😏 mahler 5 is a horn player favorite and I would reccomend listening 10 thousand times if you haven't already!! it has many many many romantic, sweeping horn solos!

haha did you think I would finish this list without saying mahler 2. MAHLER 2!!!!!!! seriously genuinely and for real this piece changed my fucking life. it is famous for its ending for a reason it fucks severely. and there's so so so many good horn parts bc mahler was a fucking genius.

I will link the very ending of mahler 2 bc it gives me chills every time but I will say the emotional payoff is probably not as great if you aren't already familiar w all of the themes as he layers them all together so I would reccomend listening from the beginning!!!

okay so it's my newest story rn so a LOT of the details aren't solidified yet but basically

alien worm parasites have started suddenly appearing on earth, taking over humans for their nutrients and creating a growing parasitic population

These parasites are essentially designed to use whatever means, including mind influence and control, that it needs to grow and become strong enough to leave its host, where it will emerge from the host's body, effectively destroying them, to live its life and reproduce to make even more human siphoning parasite offspring. Bad stuff!

Except she still lives in a place with private healthcare. so. she can't get treatment because she has 0 money and 0 health insurance

Through luck she gets a chance at a high paying, but very dangerous job: working at one of the medical treatment wards curing patients with the very same parasites that she wants to remove from herself. The staff has to use their every talent, including persuasion, combat, quick thinking, and strategy, to help their clients expel and recover from being an unwelcomed feast for their leeching foes.

The story is about her day to day life with her weird, secretive coworkers as she fights to both save others like her and get enough money and promotion to get her own treatments done, while hiding that she's been infected herself already!

4.) Shade of green I thought this would be easy since green is my favorite color but it's hard to choose lol That said, I find myself really drawn to this specific shade that I use for my OC's eyes and markings (the HEX is 1B690F).

6.) Hour of the night Something about the time between 11 p.m. and 12 p.m. is so nice. I'm the most productive in this one hour window. 11.) Character from a book Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit. He was always my favorite since I was little and his journey through the LotR saga is something that I deeply relate to and find comfort in time and time again and has gotten me through a lot of really stressful and discouraging moments in my life. 20.) Album Disturbed's Immortalized and Evolution albums. It's a little different than their earlier stuff, but there are a lot of songs on both that are important to me (ik the lead singer is a zionist, so it's all piracy since i found out the hard way) 30.) Book shorter that 300 pages Most of the stuff I read is just over 300 pages, so I had to go through my checkout history from my job lol. I work in a middle school library, so keep in mind that this is middle grade stuff, but ough I love City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab (it's the first in a series). It's about a middle schooler and her ghost bestie. I read this back in 2021 and I think that set me up for getting into Beetlejuice a few years later lol

Ahfkldkf for actual cats - first of all about breeds: I definitely support adopt don't shop, but I don't think all purebred cats are unethical 🥺 Granted, this is probably biased because of the kinds of cats I grew up with lol, but I think it can be a nice way of making sure the cats were raised ethically (purebred cats are considered Valuable so there are breeders out there who take their job Very Seriously) and getting a specific kind of cat if you want.

I think things can be a bit iffy when it comes to purebred cats that are very furry and can't clean themselves without a lot of help from humans 😭 That's why I've never particularly liked Persians. Also I randomly think ragdolls are quite overhyped even though I find them kinda cute 😂 My favourite kind of cat, in addition to the kinds we had when I was growing up, is probably the Norwegian forest cat... which, a bit contradictingly, is also a pretty long-haired cat. I also like breeds with shorter fur though, one of my favourite things to do with the (not purebred, short-haired) cats I catsit regularly is to bury my entire nose in their soft silky fur ahdkkd 😭😂

For colors - ahh I don't really see the appeal of orange cats the same many people do!! They're still cute obvs. I really like black cats, blue cats (so fancy and aristocratic 😌), tuxedos and brown tabbies 😍😍😍

I think the biggest part for me is how it's helping me feel like I'm making large scale change at small scale levels yknow? think global act local and all that!

honestly my career plans have been, in a word, wandering--my kindergarten "what I want to be when I grow up" says scientist and shows me in a lab coat surrounded by beakers, then I thought about being a writer, then an editor, then a phalloplasty surgeon, then an astronaut/botanist, then a vet, and now my trajectory is more field and policy biologist! soooo I kinda brought it back around to kindergarten me's plans (though sorry lil me we are NOT getting beakers bubbling, I am not strong at chemistry)

my passion really lies in 1) species at risk and 2) amphibians and reptiles! I've always loved an underdog and I feel that these groups are so so often a mix of misunderstood, unknown, and even hated so I think it is sososo important to take special care of them!! uncharismatic species my BELOVED

rn I'm studying the interactions between the small-mouthed salamander and an introduced species of crayfish on the southermost part of Canada! despite the location being SUPER biologically interesting, and despite the crayfish being detected in 2015, there's been almost no research into how this crayfish may be affecting the wetlands and all its inhabitants! I could go on and on about that but I'll hold off (for now)

22. favorite hockey experience? (in person or at home)

if we’re talking like, the experience of the game of hockey, probably i should be saying the avs winning the cup but tbh nothing i’ve experienced recently really comes close to the hysterical laughter that knocked me out for a solid five minutes after thomas bordeleau (san jose sharks) scored a game-winning overtime shoot out goal against the vegas golden knights. all things being equal, i’m fairly neutral on both teams but i think i had so much fun bc it was the first nhl game i’d watched in months and the whole game was SO stupid. just from beginning to end a hot fucking mess. the sharks are a very bad team! vegas are very good on paper! and somehow vegas crashed and burned to the point where a kid who was playing college hockey three weeks ago and had never scored an nhl goal decided how the game ended in a shoot out….dude, come on. (also very much enjoyed the vegas-sharks 2019 playoff run for similar reasons, one of my favorite memories of watching hockey at home was the commentator at the start of game three being like, so it’s game 3 and there have been almost two full games worth of penalty minutes. do me ON IT, i live for stupid rivalries.) i think i had to go take a walk around the neighborhood at like 10pm to calm down.

in terms of experiencing hockey as a FAN, not much comes close to going to the winter classic game in dallas and hearing the entire stadium sing a full verse and chorus of “friends in low places” by garth brooks in the middle of the game. 87,000 people just full on belting “WHERE THE WHISKEY DROWNS AND THE BEER CHASES MY BLUES AWAY, I’LL BE OKAY” just bc the arena dj played like ten seconds of the song and when you’re in texas or you’re from tennessee you do NOT fuck around with garth brooks i guess. this has very little to do with hockey, but i really loved how it felt to be in a crowd in the moment

This comic was started last summer so I've all but given up on finishing it, but here it is seeing the light of day! Only inking some of it made the exposure absolutely awful but at the end of the day it's always going to be a wip ;^;

Intended caption: "Problem: Banshee wails act as a precursor to death. Solution?: Keep your local banshee from wailing"

The idea was that Jimmy's somewhere between a banshee and a cyhyraeth, creatures who sound off before or around death. The addition of Scar really amps up the stress Jimmy induces, being thought that it could easily cause a premature death for a squishy human. Tango is, as he always is for Jimmy, a breath of fresh air. (Life and death, danger and warning, I have some thoughts on ranchers)

I wanted to set up stuff with Jimmy not just because I like him a lot, but because this thing he can do, sensing death and the possibility of death, was gonna tie in later.....

In the manga anthology there's a one-shot from his dog's POV and he mentions that sometimes Keith visits a place and he looks a bit melancholic and you can tell that he still remembers her and boy that shit stuck with me.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? I don't think I have any? Maybe shipping this at all is unpopular lmao but I love the potential there and the ending between the two of them freaking WRECKED me.
