First half: Bell's Hells

Gotta love Marisha as Sam's protege. What's the opposite of phallic? Somehow they made a hotdog costume that. And now back to sadness…

God, Orym's immediately in soldier mode.

Where are they going to go from here? If they're so in the open. Are they going to go down the Bloody Bridge or escape through Issylra? I mean, makes sense that Liliana doesn't want to tip them off, but still a woman convinced that working for Ludinus will work out somehow…

Possessing a human to escape the divine gate is pretty smart. Yeah, right, that's probably what Ruidusborn were from the start (if Predathos is sentient enough to plan).

I know she's rightly frustrating to others but Liliana is so interesting. I love characters getting so torn between morality and feeling like enduring sacrifice must be worth it.

I do like that she's still pro-god-eater too.

Oh??? Commune with Predathos??

Aw, but that's what Predathos would want her to think. That thing's will be fine for her. Anyone getting some Asmodeus vibes?

Apathy being no better than distain is something the Bells Hells know about the world. They weren't targeted. They were pawns.

"Angry at those who put it there"…. But Ruidus is a piece of Exandria. Would it be mad at that, I wonder? I'm genuinely curious whether Predathos would actively want to destroy Exandria or whether it will be mere collateral.

God I love Liliana. Still got that love for Imogen. Still got that hate and defensiveness around the gods. I see Imogen genuinely reaching out to her mum, but also being a little passive-aggressive with it to try convince her. Clever.

Haha Chetney's passive-aggressive interogations are my favourite. Makes sense that Ludinus and the Weave Mind are separate entities with separate goals, even if they're using each other. Curious how the Weave Mind will deal with Predathos.

"Be the… mother hen to them." God I love Liliana. She's very intelligent in using herself to get her way. Thank you Laura Bailey for fascinating mother PCs.

Genuinely, Liliana is more swayed by Predathos itself than I realised. Looking like a three-way gambit. Who -- Ludinus, Predathos, Weave Mind -- will win?

This conversation with Liliana is everything I wanted.

And this is great with Imogen. They can use Liliana. It's not really about morality anymore.

Good question, Fearne, about the daughter abandonment. Oh. Ludinus visited her directly? I thought it was Otohan first. I mean, this is the sad thing. Liliana was vulnerable and swept into a cult, and we see how seemingly impossible it is to escape over a decade of belonging there. Who knows? Any one of the Bell's Hells could have been her.

Good, Laudna, keeping you guys going.

Who knows if they could've taken her down? Oh why does it feel better to be killed by Otohan than for him to go down killing her….

Imogen reckoning with Liliana vs. her mum. Even if Liliana doesn't support Ludinus, the question is how much that'll tangibly matter.

A lot of these guys have to question "what they were designed for". A lot of these guys were "made" for someone else. Aw, Laudna apologising for it: her and Delilah. And yeah, it's why Liliana is also a great, tragic reflection of the Bell's Hells.

Ashton's fantastic. Orym's fantastic. Chetney's fantastic. Fuck, the Ruby Vanguard have fucked them all up.

Awwwww Laudna and Imogen's little "I love you"s. The Bell's Hells are so special to me.

I can't imagine how physically shitty Ashton must feel on top of everything.

Laudna and Ashton have always had a great dynamic. Brings out the bluntness and wisdom(?) in both of them. Christ, Evoroa's going through it too.

Imogen and Orym have always had a great dynamic too. Both trying to keep things running, especially with each other. And the fact that Orym's not even out for revenge has always been fascinating… but it's still about the massive weight of Will and Derrig's deaths on his shoulders. He's a little guy, both literally and metaphorically, and god he's had to deal with so much, and the more they deal with, the more responsibility they get. I really like that, despite their potential conflicts, Imogen and Orym have always just wanted to get along. It's what I love about the Bell's Hells. They're genuinely broken but they genuinely love each other but they're genuinely broken but they genuinely love each other.

DORIAN SENDING! Was it just that he was asleep last time? I hope so. God, Orym/Liam's voice breaking breaks me.

IMOGEN AND LAUDNA ORIGINS

Imogen and Laudna have been traveling together through the Taloned Highlands for the last few months. Eventually ending up in the port city of Marshvale Station.

Walking down through the market square, surrounded by merchants selling their goods on carts or from their shop fronts. Spending the last of their coin on some fresh fruits, Imogen hands half to Laudna and puts the rest in her own bag. “Well, that was the last of our coin.” Imogen states, as they make their way back to the Inn they’re staying at. “It’s still early enough to find some work, and earn a bit of coin.” Laudna looks over at Imogen, who’s looking a bit tapped out from the crowded market square. “Or I could have Paté perform, people loved it last time.” Laudna makes Paté do a little tap dance just for Imogen to see. Receiving the smallest of chuckles, like Laudna was hoping for. “I think I’d rather relax and go out for a job tomorrow if you don’t mind.” “Of course! I have about three gold left, so dinner’s on me. And then we can just hang out in our room, drink tea.” “Thanks, Laudna.”

The ladies arrive at Inn a couple minutes later. Thankfully it’s not that crowded in here, with only six others sitting at the bar with drinks. Imogen and Laudna sit down at a booth, ordering two glasses of milk and a little bite to eat. “There you go ladies, any luck finding passage today?” The owner Tymina, a -, asks as she places the food and drinks down on the table. “Thank you, not yet. But I’m really tapped out for the day.” “We’re gonna head out again tomorrow.” Laudna adds to Imogen’s answer. “Well I’m sure you’ll find what you need. I heard a lot of ships came in today stopping for supplies and rations for a day.” Tymina gives them a kind smile, before heading back to the bar and attending the customers there.

A bit of time goes by with Laudna and Imogen just chatting, when a cheerful voice suddenly interrupts their conversation. “Hi! I’m sorry, but I couldn’t help to overhear you mentioning looking for passage.. Are you going to Gavren?” A blue skinned female tiefling, with long wavy royal blue hair and a set of horns curving back and out adorned with gold jewelry, stands next to their table. A big enthusiastic smile on her face. “Uhhm...” Imogen looks the girl over, then notices the group sitting at the bar. A dark to lighter green-skinned half-orc man, black hair with a lock of gray in the front and a set of tusks poking out from his bottom lip, sitting with his head in his hand. His thought enters her mind. “Here we go again..” Meanwhile Laudna is happily engaging. “Oh, well yes we are. You see, Imogen has these powers and-” Imogen’s eye grow big as Laudna just starts talking. “I’m sorry, who are you?” She quickly stops Laudna from saying too much. “Oh yes, I’m Jester! It’s nice to meet you!” She reaches out her hand, introducing herself. Laudna happily shake it. “I’m Laudna, it’s so nice to meet you aswel.” “Wow, you’re really creepy looking.. Are you dead or something?” “Oh kay!” The half-orc man gets up and quickly makes his way over.

“I’m so sorry, my wife gets excited when she can help others. And you look..” He pauses for a moment, looking over at Laudna who is still holding out her hand giving them the kindest smile she can muster. “.. wonderful and healthy, we’ll leave you to it now.” As he’s about to pull Jester along with him back to the bar, Laudna speaks up again. “Oh that’s alright, I am actually. Dead, I mean.” Jester immediately turns back around, fully invested again. “You are?! That. Is. So. Cool! How did you die? Was it painful? When did you die? Do you age? How old are you?” Jester slides into the booth next to Laudna, blurting out all the questions. “Okay before we get into everyone’s life stories, which I’m sure is not really on your to-do list at the moment.” The half-orc eyes Jester. “Right, I’m sorry.. I just never met a dead person that isn’t trying to kill us, you know.” Jester apologizes to Laudna. “Uhm, if you’ll allow me.. My name is Fjord, and I believe what Jester was trying to say is that we overheard a bit of your conversation and wanted to offer our help if needed, of course.” The half-orc, now introduced as Fjord, clears up. “Yes, that.. yes!” Jester, somewhat chaotically, confirms. “It’s so nice to meet the both of you. And that’s very kind of you, but unless you have a ship I’m not sure of how much help you can be to us..” Imogen replies, in her usual calm tone of voice now that there’s not a big crowd around her anymore. “Well, you see, we do though. Have a ship.” Jester states, excitedly. “You do?!” Laudna asks. “Yes, we own a shipping business, Stone’s Throw Shipping, and are currently sailing all over Exandria.” Fjord adds to Jester’s statement. “Well, we’ve run low on coin, but if there’s any other way we can pay you. It would mean a lot to us, to me, if you could take us to Port Garven.” Imogen sits up a bit straighter, not expecting this sudden opportunity. “Of course! We’re leaving tomorrow morning, our ship is called the Nein Heroez, meet us there at dawn.” Jester informs them. “Wonderful! I’m sorry, but I don’t think I caught your name?” Fjord turns to Imogen. “Oh right, I’m Imogen. Nice to meet you both.” Imogen reaches her hand out, Fjord takes it giving her a kind smile. “We’ll see you tomorrow morning then.” With that the couple walks back to the bar and out of the Inn with their group.

Not long after Laudna and Imogen head to their room, having one last cup of tea together before heading to bed.

Thess vs ALL THE DEMOS

It’s not a Steam Next Fest, but last night I was sitting there going, “I hurt too much to sleep and I should do some hyperfocus Zen until the pain meds kick in a bit more or I’m too tired to care” and decided to prune my current Demo folder. And then today I went perusing for more demos (thanks to recent time spent on DREDGE, it really wants to throw eldritch horror at me, to the point where it’s pointing me at things where not even the demo is out yet, never mind the game). So now there are a lot more demos.

Sometimes I worry about seeming pretentious because I barely play anything that isn’t indie or, like, nearly a decade old? But honestly, I think I’ll just be glad I can sit here and celebrate indie games. Besides, the Stray Gods: RPG Musical demo dropped and this is David Gaider writing and a whole lot of very talented voice actors and I have got to see this. And the others look interesting.

So, yeah. More demos.

Lake: This one’s an older game, but it’s been on my wishlist for quite awhile. I just hadn’t seen the demo before. I was checking the store page to see how long it’s going to be on sale, since I was considering adding it to my purchases when Cook, Serve, Forever and Pan’Orama come out in a couple of days, and boom, demo. So I gave it a try to see if I actually wanted to buy the thing. And ... I think I do? I mean, there’s some vehicular stuff that occasionally feels a little counterintuitive to me, and I’ve clearly been living in this country too long because I keep driving on the wrong side of the road, and some of the people in that town need a slap across the mouth (don’t even get me started about Meredith’s regular boss), but there are stories there and I want to see where they go. And I haven’t crashed the postal van yet, so that’s something. Basically it’s driving around, delivering mail, occasionally talking to people, and getting bits and pieces of the stories that float around little quasi-rural towns in Oregon. The scenery’s nice too.

Blue Wednesday: This one’s kind of a maybe. The bit of it I played was interesting, but I’d really need to practice the piano minigame if I really want to actually do the thing. Then again, I guess that’s what playing the game is for. ...Also admittedly this one hits a bit close to home, as it features a young aspiring jazz musician who’s more or less having to put his dreams of being a professional musician on hold because capitalism, basically. I think everybody who’s likely to play this one is going to get a twinge out of that one, and that’s just the first in-game day. So I’ll be keeping an eye on that one when it comes out - the gameplay’s pretty clever and the premise is relatable, for sure.

Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical: I got fairly interested in this one as soon as I heard about it. This game has got pedigree. David Gaider’s one of the directors and writers, one of the other directors was writing for Pillars of Eternity, and as for the cast ... well, in the demo alone I got Laura Bailey, Ashley Johnson, and Khary Payton, plus a couple “I know that one sounds familiar” that haven’t hit IMDB yet and Janina Gavankar, who I mostly know from having been into True Blood and a fairly minor role in Horizon Zero Dawn’s The Frozen Wilds expansion ... but also from some of the Forspoken trailers. Anyway, it also has Troy Baker, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, Allegra Clark, Erika Ishii, Rahul Kohli, Anjali Bhimani, Felicia Day (which ... ehh for me but y’know)... Fans of Critical Role will know a lot of these voices. But still, pedigree doesn’t count for much if the story and mechanics aren’t there. Now, the demo’s really short, and doesn’t touch on the plot that much? But the mechanics are interesting. Basically ... okay, think of it as The Wicked and the Divine meets Scooby Doo meets that one Buffy musical episode, Once More With Feeling, where you’re given options and the decisions you make not only affect how you proceed, but also shape the lyrics of your big musical numbers. It’s honestly clever as shit, and that’s another one I don’t think I’d mind pre-ordering. Don’t know if that’ll be an option, but it’s coming out in August, so at least it’s not a massively long wait.

Lighthouse of Madness: Steam has been throwing eldritch horror at me because of the amount of time I’ve spent on DREDGE lately, so here we are. This one’s ... interesting but problematic. I mean, it’s first person, so that’s an issue for me, and honestly the controls are a little janky. It looks wonderfully atmospheric and creepy, but it’s a low priority on my wish list because honestly, I’m not sure how well I’d be able to play it. Still, lots more eldritch horror where that came from.

Not right now, though - if for no other reason than that this post is going to get insanely long if I don’t knock it off. So more later - this is going to be a “Poking At Demos” kind of weekend. Yaaaaaay!

Twelve things I noted about CR2E90 “Bathhouses and Bastions” :

Matt, at the beginning of the first episode of CR in 2020 : "We are back ! We've missed you guys, hope you've had a decent break. We have mostly rejuvenated with what time we had. Hopefully we'll catch up the rest before the end of the world !!" YIKES. PHRASES THAT DID NOT AGE WELL.

Sam reveals yet another Matt t-shirt while Matt sighs, and we learn that Sam has "four drawers of t-shirts : not all Matt, some are me." (Matt : "How does Q feel about that ?" Sam : "Hum... she doesn't need to know about those !")

The planning for TravelerCon3000 is going super great : the volcano may be or not be active, Jester doesn't know how many people will be there or how they will even get there, but at least Caduceus and Yasha will play their instruments to hype the crowd for Jester's speech.

The Mighty Nein, heroes of the Dynasty and the Empire, teleporting to the Bright Queen palace from a Rexxentrum spa they robbed blind with arms full of robes and towels. I love them SO MUCH, they're all so very chaotic gremlins

Ok so there was the equivalent of Vence in the Dynasty, working for the cult, and he pushed to have the Krin attack as a distraction under the pretense that a beacon was in Rexxentrum. Okay. And he also was the traitor who long ago gave the two beacons away to the Assembly ?? This part feels weird... and not connected to it.

Oh the reveal that the Krin forces are still under Rexxentrum, just waiting orders to maybe continue hits different, after seeing the Nein go shopping, go to an underground fight ring, and go to the spa. 4 days, huh. Nott was right !

The Sprinkle conversation is so funny, but also awful because when Laura Bailey pouts, you are forced to agree with her. I love that Travis' voice for Sprinkle is basically Macaroni Samsonite's voice but even more high-pitched and sped up.

The talk with the Bright Queen, for all tense it was, was way less creepy and authocratic than the one within the King's chambers...

And we end with a very very very bad Mighty Nein concert. How fitting.

I'm not that far. He only just showed up and I got one rank in.

.....Let's just say shit hit the fan for me on Thursday and I've gotten REALLY busy....ummmm.....fixing it so I can get back to my normal routine? Is that the best way to describe it (I still have stuff to do, but I'm not longer in "emergency mode")? I haven't picked up any game stuff since then (I literally passed out yesterday night cause I was so tired jfkldsjf). (oh wait, I'm so out of it I misread it as only asking about Ryoji....lol, well I'm talking about him first I guess, )

Going off the one interaction....... Yuri. I prefer Yuri. I already preferred Yuri's Pharos to Aleks' Pharos. I like both as MC.

There's something about Yuri's........Between OG/FES/P and the manga...... But Aleks' Ryoji feels more like it fits the P3 movies (same with Ikutsuki tbh). There's something about THAT portrayal of Ryoji that hits different compared to the other's.

THAT BEING SAID. I'll take Aleks. BUT ONLY if that means we can have Yosuke going back to not sounding as squeaky. TT0TT I can handle Adachi's voice change (feels like he decided to put on a more deranged mask). But Yosuke I want him back to sounding chiller. orz

Um....Aki's ok. I don't mind him. There's something about Liam's voice I prefer BUT, I wouldn't mind the new guy coming back.

Junpei is good (both in general and as a replacement). Keep him (if I have to deal with Junpei again that is)

Mitsu is good. I prefer Tara tho. Nothing against the new girlie, Tara's just one of my fav VAs. (the other VAs I like are Naoto's OG, Laura Bailey, Lily Vonnegut, Jamie Marchi, Kristen Bell, David Gallagher, and KH1!Haley Joel Osment, Santino Fontana...something about their cadence makes my brain go brrrrr but like for diff reasons)

Speaking of Brrrr, I really like Yuko's and Shinji's a lot.

Both old and new Shinji are great. Love them.

Love the new Ken. I never hated his OG, and Cindy did a good job too. But the new one is really good.

Fuuka......she's cute (I'm more annoyed that they didn't add to her at all so far :'D thanks atlus). I miss the OG one. Wendee Lee did great too (she always sounded like a higher pitched ver of the OG to me).

I think I liked both Natsuki's VAs? I do miss the old one. I can't recall the new one's voice atm TT0TT

Koro is fine lol

I don't like Takaya's new VA. I like the old one give him back.

I think I like this Chidori VA more? I didn't mind the old one. (also Chidori run, stay away from Junpei TT0TT)

Jin.........I think I like him more?

Ikutsuki. Prefer the old one. New one would be good for the movie ver tho!

I miss the old Igor. Gimme back Dan Woren you cucks! TT0TT Kirk is fine but I want Dan back! (wait Dan is Byakuya from Bleach???? Gimme him back! TT0TT)

Aigis is better. I didn't mind the old one, but this was an improvement.

All the VAs for the SLs are great so far tbh (haven't done Moon yet, not cause I don't want to, but because it's optimal if I wait)

I think the thing that irks me about the new voices are.......the new voices for the already existing secondary/background chars (chars who were never voiced before? no problem). I. DON'T. LIKE. THEM.

"Oh but it's cool to hear!" or "We need Yuri to still get a check" I don't care. I don't like it. It's weird. It's weird hearing P3MC's voice coming out of Yukari's dad ("oh like Aki's is any better?" AKI ISN'T A LOVE INTEREST FOR YUKARI OUTSIDE HC! TT0TT)

I hate that they swapped Mitsu's dad and Kurosawa. Did they eat? Yea, they did great. Does it bother me because I find it COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY???? YESSSS!

My 9/11 is the damn principal's voice being changed. oh my god, it's not the same. He was so perfect in the OG, he was bumbling it just.....god it worked. The new guy.....doesn't give the same doddering vibe. man orz (I know most people are coming for the new Aki guy, or someone else, but man I'm very annoyed by the NPCs being changed orz)

I think one of THE BIGGEST issues I have with them just....redubbing the whole damn thing is (MORE SO the side NPCs than the main cast).....just how costly that must've been. Like stupidly costly, like they didn't need to do it. It was just wasting money kinda costly. Like they coulda used that money for something else, like I dunno....PUTTING THE FUCKING ANSWER AND FEMC IN????? >_> *inhales* I know I know I KNOW. Before you say it. Before my lil strawman I talk to in my head says it. The english localization's funds were probs separate from the JPN devs funds. I mean, unless Atlus JPN controls Atlus USA's funding directly, and thus have more direct involvement. I mean, haha, that'd make sense. Talks Machina Highlights - Critical Role C2E125 (Feb. 16, 2021)

Goooood evening good evening good evening, all! I hope you’re all staying warm and safe and dry in this chilly weather. Tonight’s guests: Travis Willingham and Laura Bailey.

We open tonight with Travis ribbing Brian for his continuous remodel of his office space. Laura demands a second introduction of herself as she wasn’t paying attention during the first one.

Travis: “You’ve gotta love Julianne Moore. She’s the only actress who can cry and show you all her teeth at the same time.” I was listening pretty closely when he said this and I’m still not sure it had any context.

Jester thinks there’s a strong possibility at least half the party will die against the Tombtakers. Fjord doesn’t think the odds are quite that high, but it will be dangerous. Laura points out that most of the M9 are also willing to sacrifice themselves for the rest of the party, so that changes their odds as well. Travis: “The game is not a stress reliever. It is not a stress reliever. I mean, it’s fun as shit, but it is stressful!”

Laura thinks Essek will give them a better chance. Travis: “A plus-one? A powerful plus-one, but a plus-one?” Did you see his reaction when we gave him the lowdown? Let’s be real: we kinda trust Essek. I got $50 that when we come back, he’s gone.” Laura is convinced he is trustworthy & wants to lighten his soul.

Jester spent so much time trying to bring out the Molly side of Lucien that to have him then betray them sucked. She knew that trying to bring the good out of everyone they met would eventually fail, but it stung that it was the most powerful one they encountered to first betray them.

She tries to talk about finger gestures during the answer as a reference to the HBO show “Raised by Wolves,” and Brian and Travis tell her to keep digging this hole she gets herself into about fingering. Travis: “Just get off the interstate at the next exit and turn right.” Laura, of course, immediately mimes turning a hard left, and they spent the next few minutes laughing at her inability to tell right from left and that even now she still has to hold up her hands to tell left from right.

Fjord is furious that they nicked the Bag of Holding. The loss of Vess DeRogna is bad enough, but he is genuinely IRL anxious about the loss of the Cloven Crystal. Laura points out that Fjord has also explicitly talked to Lucien about the deep sea creature patron he used to follow as well. He’s terrified one of Lucien’s scimitars is suddenly going to have a big eye sticking out of it. Laura suggests they’ll just succeed, bring back the city, and wake up Uk’otoa for the heck of it.

It was really rough to go from the Gelidon fight to the Tombtaker fight, especially since the first fight sent so well. Travis felt great that he initiated the dragon fight - he knew they had a far advantage in the numbers and felt that it was an open and shut case.

Laura does boggle that if Caleb hadn’t asked for that item from the Bag of Holding, they might have slept all night before realizing it was gone. They’re both relieved that they now know so much more about how the Tombtakers fight, especially the anti-magic cone. The most anxiety-ridden part was when they were trying to run and the TTs weren’t letting them. “You know when you don’t even have squares, when Matt’s black-tableclothing it, you’re in deep shit.” Laura had no spells left - she was so worried if she dropped the polymorph she would have had nothing left.

Travis: “Thanks for healing me, babe.” Laura: “You’re welcome, baby. It was ultimately a waste, though, because we took a rest immediately and you could just spend your hit dice.” Everyone laughs at Travis’s pain. She does say it was worth it in the moment since they didn’t know if they would be able to get away.

They joke that Laura’s just wearing the Fire Resist ring on a chain around her neck/Sprinkle is wearing it now to keep it safe since she’s not attuned to it anymore. It’s pretty hilarious!

Travis hoped that the TTs were originally actively looking for more acolytes rather than just having Caleb & Beau read the book. Otis needs to die. He’s relieved they have an idea of what all their blood rites do. Laura thought the time with them was fun, but it makes her retroactively wish that she’d dropped Zoran in the lava when they had the chance. Travis wishes they’d put a chime on the door of the tower.

Laura loved the tarot card reading, since Taliesin sent her really detailed breakdowns of the cards & gave her a real deck for Christmas. Taliesin told her she did a great job afterwards which she really appreciated, since she’s not sure what she’s doing. She does wish that she knew why Lucien seemed so nervous when she was talking about rebirth.

Travis on confessing to Jester: “It FUCKING made me crazy!” He’s never been an instigator of campaign romances in the past, but because he loves Laura and was able to connect to her on that level he felt like it was a good challenge instead. He doesn’t think he could have done it with someone he wasn’t comfortable with. It was also important to him for it to be founded on real-game moments and after real-game time had passed, and he felt it was a very natural progression. Seeing the statues rip five years from her in such a benign situation made him realize that to let the opportunity pass wouldn’t have been worth it. He wishes he’d told Vandran what he meant to Fjord as well.

Laura loves that Fjord is becoming more confident as well. The post-Gelidon smooch took Laura completely by surprise since she’s finding Jester is a little surprisingly awkward with IRL affection, and she was surprised Fjord was the confident one there. “It’s so wonderful. It’s a matter of finding a way to get comfortable with it with her away from the Tombtakers.” Travis thought it was important to continue the “go for it” mantra. He notes that he’s pretty private about his personal life IRL, so it’s been a bit of a shift. It’s slower in a way - not a “you’re my one true love” kind of thing, more of a “let’s see where this goes and act on what you can” thing.

They were all “poopin’ in their pants” to get to go to Emon. The worst part was not getting to explore outside the tower since they had to leave again immediately. Kima is so cool, and Travis was actively trying to get Kima to come with them. Everyone boggles that they got to borrow Allura’s staff.

Laura only was thinking about the item-tuned-to-the-target-plane because she’d been texting with Liam trying to iron out their spell choices. She’s so relieved that they were able to get something tuned to the Sea from Allura.

For the most part, Laura knows what spells are the most useful for Jester, but every now and then she does get caught by major component requirements that she hadn’t noted. She wants to get another chalice for Hero’s Feast before they go into the Sea.

Dani points out that a lot of their allies right now are mages (no Kashaws, no Kimas, no Grogs) and they’re heading to a bad place for mages.

Travis has a sudden brain wave about all the TTs being from the Claret Order and wonders if they should investigate that before they pursue. I don’t even remember what that order is and I feel terrible!

Fjord is stoked that the Star Razor is a Vestige, and more now that he knows in-character what that means. It was great to see Allura react the way she did.

Jester doesn’t think they can really go to Nicodranas - they don’t have anymore time. Even more, Jester’s avoiding going home because she doesn’t want the Ruby to see that she got aged up/hurt on her travels.

Travis honestly assumes that the TTs are spying on them 100% of the time now.

Does Jester feel better now that the crest is away from Lucien? Yes, even though it’s gone off course. She thought dropping the crest where they were was a HORRIBLE idea and was appalled so many people were suggesting it. She saw the city with her own eyes, knows the danger of what’s coming, and if they had dropped it in flight she would have dropped with it and defended it as long as she could if that’s what would have kept them from getting it.

Travis thinks that if they can negotiate with Lucien, they should try. Everyone is super worried about Caleb’s and Beau’s new eyes and are fully anticipating they’re on a clock at this point. They wonder if it’ll drive up their exhaustion, allow Lucien to force them to fight against them, maybe make them willing slaves to the mysterious voice...they need to solve it sooner rather than later.

- The whole trash talk pre-battle against Kevdak. Travis WOW.

- When he asked Pike to teach him how to read and I ugly cried + "I spend the following years learning how to read" in the epilogue and I also ugly cried.

- When he was sad because he didn't have a role in Vex and Percy's wedding and then they asked him to be the flower girl and he was.just.so.happy.and.proud.of.himself. “Can I have this job??” Groooog why are you so wholesome :'(

- Keyleth’s epilogue was just beautiful and the perfect way to close the campaign. Much feels. Much cry.

- *Takes a sip of the weird Markesian drink* "Haha I don't feel anything" *Takes another sip of the weird Markesian drink. Passes out automatically*

- Pike: Maybe we should sleep together and see how it goes

Scanlan: O- OKAY????

Pike: No just kidding lol sorry

- “Guiding bolt up his butt”

- "Sometimes I talk to Scanlan through the earring even though I know he can't hear me" like, Ashley stop. And then she gets drunk and starts actually talking to him like, ASHLEY STOP.

Scanlan

- "You'll leave when Burt Reynolds tells you to leave!"

- "Do you spice?" or "Scanlan spends a whole episode in a quest for drugs. Ends up getting a bag of baking soda for like 400G. Lives with the shame for the rest of his life" Perfect. Spectacular. You just can't write shit this good.

- When he apologizes to Pike for being a fuckboy.

- Every single counterspell this motherfucker has ever casted.

- Basically the whole battle against Vecna was endless epic content from Scanlan.

- You know what, every single Scanlan moment is iconic and we all know it. Let's not pretend we can just pick a few.

ooh thank you! Let's see, that would be Please, Be Enough, from way back in- dang, 2016.

This fic was born of me staying up all night to watch the Percy Resurrection episode of Critical Role, aka the episode where Vex rolled the Nat 20 of True Love. It was the first episode I managed to watch live and as a huge Perc'ahlia fan it was everything I could have wanted and gave me so many feelings I had to put them into a little Vex character study

First off, I did not write the fic in order. I jumped around the scenes and the timeline and filled in parallels as felt appropriate. So this scene wasn't actually written first, but I knew from the start I was going to have to include something like it...

Vex’ahlia lives in a tiny, humble house on the outskirts of a small village. The cold season is approaching, so she and Vax and their mother make their way to the market for new coats. Vax has grown- he’s taller than his sister now, which makes him quite happy and her quite annoyed- and his old coat is too short and scrunches up funny when he moves his arms. Vex fits into hers better, but it’s old and thin and not very good at keeping her warm. Their mother’s is even older, with patches running down the sleeves and threads hanging loose at the hem. Vax wanders off in the store, running his fingers over the clothes lined up against the wall, but Vex stays close to their mother. Leaning forward on her tiptoes, she watches as coins are counted over the countertop, and she bites her lip and glances at the storekeeper and hopes.

Please, be enough.

because what character study is complete without childhood baggage- in Vex's case, an acute understanding of the notion that money equals taking care of the people I care about.

It’s not. The storekeeper looks at them with pity in his eyes, but only shakes his head. He and Vex’s mother argue for a bit, but to no avail. They leave with only mittens for Vex and Vax, which their mother promises will help them keep warm. She pulls the mittens down over Vax’s ears, which makes Vex giggle, but she still notices that their mother didn’t buy anything for herself.

In case you can't tell yet, this fic is going to be extremely bittersweet

Vex’ahlia lives in a mansion in a grand elven city. It’s a beautiful place, and she hates every inch of it. She misses her mother, and her hometown, and the way Vax used to smile. But the twins’ father has decided they need other things. Now they have all the finery they could ever think to ask for, and they are given lessons in history, language, and culture. But nothing can change the fact that they both hate living here, and it feels like the city itself hates them back. And yet Vex still tries.

And again, more baggage. I do love this element of Vex's character- as much as she wants to wash her hands completely of these people, she also desperately wants to prove herself to them. It builds so much of her characterization, and Laura Bailey did a fantastic job representing that.

(I also just appreciate the juxtaposition in the twins' backstory of experiencing childhood in both a poor home full of love and a wealthy home with no love at all)

She works hard and attends her lessons and tries to find a way to fit into her father’s world. She knows it is hopeless, but she does it anyway because if she can at least do something to make their father proud to have them here maybe it won’t be so bad.

Also I should legally be allowed to enter the CR universe and punch Vex's father

She tries and looks to her father and hopes.

Please, be enough.

It isn’t. Nothing can satisfy her father or anyone else here. Eventually Vex and Vax reach their limit, and they leave together on a clear summer night. As Vex turns her back on the city, she pushes away anything that might resemble regret and vows to never think of life there again. She doesn’t need it, and she doesn’t need them. She has her brother, and very soon she has Trinket, and eventually she even has a family of a different sort.

I know it's the most basic trope in the world by now, but there's a reason found family is so good and this is it

anyway, I think this section might have been the second one I wrote? It was definitely one of the early parts, because it's one of the clearest things that sits in Vex's head and reinforces that feeling of having to be strong and desperately wanting to prove to herself and everyone else that she's good enough

Vex’ahlia lives nowhere, because the keep she once called home is now the only thing left standing in a city of burned rubble.

aaaand of course that bit of found family before has to be followed up with this!

The sting of the loss is especially strong because it wasn’t just hers, it was theirs. Vox Machina’s. Percy reminds her that cities can be rebuilt, and she comforts herself with the thought that one day they will all rebuild their home together. She steps as quietly as she can through the ruined streets, eyes scanning the skies for dragons, one hand on her bow, trying not to think of another place that was destroyed by dragon fire.

The twins really do just have all the angst, and I love it.

Yes, they will leave. And they will return. It will not be easy, but these dragons must be killed, and she knows they must be the ones to do it. She thinks of how many times she’s nearly lost the people she loves in the last month alone, how she’s come close to death herself. But they’re all still here, still alive. They are strong and smart and skilled. Vex tightens her grip on her bow and hopes.

Please, be enough.

It isn’t. Vex screams and screams, but she knows it’s no use.

god I don't even have anything insightful to add here, I'm just remembering how much this scene wrecked me when I first watched it.

Percy lies at her feet, and it’s wrong, it’s so wrong, Percy should be up and angry and firing his gun next to her. He should be fiddling with some new invention, should be thinking of a dozen different ways to fix this mess. Vex remains by his side as she fires two arrows at Ripley- one to stop her heart and one to silence her screams, for this woman deserves neither while Percy lies so still and silent.

I am fond of that last line. It's got a brutal vindictiveness to it, which I enjoy

But it’s too late for her bow and arrows to do him any good. She kneels by Percy’s side and remembers a voice offering protection in exchange for something she could not give, and her heart breaks all over again.

And can we just appreciate how fucked up it would have been for Vex if Percy's resurrection had failed? Just the knowledge that she was offered power but turned it down in majority because of her love for Percy, and then so soon after that Percy dies. And if that death sticks, I'm positive that Vex would have blamed herself because if she'd just taken that power and gotten stronger, she could have saved him. Which loop right back around to her biggest, most consistent fear through the show- that she's been fooling everyone into thinking she's much better than she really is, and that when it comes down to it, she's just not good enough.

Vex’ahlia kneels in the temple of the city in which she is a Baroness. She remembers the day Percy gave her that gift, and she speaks of it as she gently lays stones on his chest. Pike is preparing the ritual, and Vex knows if she doesn’t tell him now she will never tell him anything ever again. The temple is silent as Vex kisses Percy’s lips and offers him her heart. It is a bruised and bitter offering,

and I do like that 'bruised and bitter' bit. Vex is so beautifully flawed, and she tries so hard to pretend that she's not and to guard her heart so that she's never vulnerable, but in this moment she lets all those walls down

but she makes it all the same because despite everything the world has thrown at her she has never been able to stamp out the spark of hope that keeps pushing her relentlessly forward. So Vex closes her eyes, and prays, and hopes.

Please, be enough.

And for once, it is.

And there's the happy ending amidst all this angst!

That ending was actually the first part of the fic I wrote, and it's what compelled me to write the rest and actually post it. I just love their relationship, and part of that is because they have such a strong connection- Percy is able to see through Vex's cracks, see her insecurities, and give her the exact validation and support she needs in ways that no other character ever quite does. They end up with this wonderful theme of Vex letting herself really be seen by someone she loves, and that person thinks she is amazing and loves her to pieces exactly as she is, flaws and all. Meanwhile, by reaching out to Percy, she gives something to live for and hope for beyond the revenge he's spent his life obsessing over. And those are both things neither ever seemed to think they'd really have!

Anyway, it's getting late and if I keep rambling about these two I'll just get more and more off topic. But the point is, this fic was born of my obsessing over the resurrection episode and how the theme of acceptance is so deeply woven into Vex's character and her relationship with Percy, to the point where I finally had to write something down about it

Closing remarks for #LingComm21

I’m delighted to have co-organized LingComm21 last week, the first International Conference on Linguistics Communication. Here is the (lightly edited) text of the opening remarks I gave after the final panel.

Hello lingcommers! It's only been three days, and I haven't left my apartment, and yet I feel like I've been somewhere. You know, I was tempted to make this feel like the real conference experience by getting some coffee and muffins and leaving them out overnight to get stale before I eat them. Or maybe letting my phone run out of battery and sitting on the floor next to an outlet in the wall so I could charge it Okay, I didn't do that. But in the end, I still feel like I had a real conference experience. I got to wander around from poster to poster and find out about so many cool projects, I got to introduce people to each other and send other people to find each other because they had similar interests. I got to scroll through the livetweet and the instagram hashtag afterwards when I was thoroughly exhausted and like a whole bunch of posts. I got to hang out in the cafe before talks and the bar after them and chat with people. I mean, the cafe now has cats in it, and this has never happened to me at a physical conference BUT NOW I THINK IT SHOULD. And like any real conference, I have some people to thank: Captioners - Maggie and Tess from White Coat Captioning Sponsors - the Linguistics Association of Great Britain, Wordnik, and our 12 personal sponsors who helped us keep the registration fees low while being able to afford captioning. And especially to the patrons of Lingthusiasm, who enabled us to underwrite the setup costs of this conference, such as the deposit on captioning, before we had any idea whether anyone would be interested in attending. Volunteers - our 10 excellent volunteers from many different countries, who greeted you at the door on the first day and were available for questions throughout the conference Panelists, poster presenters, moderators, and people who organized meetups, who made the body of the conference happen by giving you things to show up for! Organizing committee - Laura Bailey, Jessi Grieser, and especially my co-chair Lauren Gawne, who figured out the structure and programming for this conference Conference manager - Liz McCullough, who not only sent you tons of emails and created this fantastic gather space, but also took care of innumerable tiny and last minute details that made this whole event run smoothly Speaking of event running, I want to call your attention particularly to the meetup in the first slot tomorrow about the future of this lingcomm conference - is this a thing that you'd like to see happen again? It does take work to run but it's also been incredibly rewarding, so if that's something you'd be interested in being involved in, please come to that meetup or send us an email and we can begin that conversation. We've been taking a lot of notes on what we've learned from this year and we'd be very happy to pass those along to a new team. For this year, I hope that you've had the relief of being understood, of being around other people who also care about linguistics communication, that people have gone from avatars you maybe recognized from social media into avatars you literally "bumped" into, and from strangers into maybe the seeds of friends. The panelists said in the closing panel a few minutes ago that this is a community - I promise I didn’t even tell them to say that - and I hope that this feeling of community is something you can bring with you. The formal programming ends today, but hopefully for lingcomm this is the beginning of a new era, an era of deepening the collaborations and the relationships with each other, of occasionally looking inward to this community so that we can look outward again to all of the lingcomm we're doing with our existing communities with renewed vigour. So I'll say not goodbye but I'll see you again, whether around in Gather later this evening, at the meetup day, or in the coming weeks and months on social media.

Pyre/Greedling Meta:

I remember in the earlier volumes that a fair amount of people in the FNDM would compare Cinder to Lust from Fullmetal Alchemist, due to her femme fatale persona and voice seeming like an impression of Laura Bailey's Lust.

But as we learn more about Cinder and meet Salem in vol4, it's very clear that the version of herself she likes to present herself as is meant to come across as an impression, an imitation. Because she's trying to imitate Salem, the person who defines what power is to her.

And as that facade crumbles and we slowly start to see how deep Cinder's desires really run, it's far more clear to me that her character and story have much more in common with Greed, not Lust.

Greed is the only homunculi who is willing to follow his deepest desires to the fullest, regardless of where that placed him. He was certainly willing to do evil, but wouldn't if that evil didn't personally benefit him. And, over time within the series, Greed comes to realise that his obsession with power, glory and seeking to become God, were nothing more than vain attempts to cover up his true emotional emptiness caused by a lack of connecting to others. And once he finds a cause and people to support who help and support him in turn, his character arc finishes with him, Greed, looking on all that he has, his friends, and is grateful. Content.

Which ties into the lesson of the Fall Maiden in the Tale of the Four Maidens in which Fall begs the Hermit to look around at all he has and be thankful. To be satisfied and content with oneself, which is a lesson Cinder has to learn in order to truly become a Fall Maiden.

Greed's desires are similar to Cinder's own ambition for power driven by her fear and insecurities, seeking to become a "godlike maiden badass" wanting to fill the emptiness and craving she feels, not yet realizing that this will not be what brings her true satisfaction to her, well, greed.

"Greed may not be good, but it's not so bad either. You humans think greed is just for money and power! But everyone wants something they don't have"

"You Atlas elites are all the same! You think hoarding power means you'll have it forever. But it just makes the rest of us hungrier! And I refuse to starve"."

I think it's very important to point out that Greed doesn't become good or redeem himself because he sees the error of his ways and wants to atone for the things he's done, rather he starts on the path to redemption by refusing to be a pawn to Father any longer, when realizing the power and glory he craves he wouldn't be able to obtain by staying and working underneath Father like the rest. His greed and dissatisfaction are what motivates him, though it is ultimately Ling who gives him the final push and convinces him to side with the protagonists.

And Cinder at the end of vol7 seems to be heading towards a crossroads of whether or not she'll stay with Salem, given how the Grimm arm that was "gifted" to her by Salem seems to be slowly consuming her body, she might have doubts about whether the kind of power Salem has promised her is really the kind of power she wants, and whether she's prepared to sacrifice herself to obtain it, or whether she could choose to strike out on her own. Again, some villains start on the path to redemption solely out of self interest.

It's also not just Greed's story I think Cinder's is remarkably similar to, but the stories of Ling and Pyrrha and the role they play in Greed and Cinder's stories, as their souls and stories are intrinsically intertwined.

The ouroboros tattoo and its meaning was the first thing that caught my attention, as it the ouroboros symbol represents eternal cyclical renewal. Of life, death and rebirth. And how that aligns with Pyrrha's incantation used to unlock Jaune's aura:

"For it is in passing we achieve immortality. Through this we become a paragon of virtue and glory to rise above all. Infinite in distance and unbound by death, I release your soul, and by my shoulder, protect thee"

Cinder also has a tattoo of her own symbol that appears after connecting to Amber's soul and taking half of her power, just like the ouroboros tattoo appearing after Greed and Ling's souls were intertwined and he had taken over his body. Cinder takes the other half of the maiden powers after Pyrrha had been bound to them as her and Amber's aura were intertwined, making it likely that Pyrrha is a part of Cinder in the same way Greed and Ling are.

Both Pyrrha and Ling are considered to be people in positions of power and prestige with great expectations placed on them that they intend to live up to. Ling as an Xingese prince, Pyrrha as a world renowned champion fighter and promising huntresses, the "invincible girl". Both agree to becoming a maiden/homuculus respectively, despite the inhumane means of doing so and risk to their body, soul and life, as they believe obtaining this power will help their people.

"We can't transfer Amber's power to you but we can give you what those powers are bound to."

"Her aura"

"Her life... would become intertwined with yours. The question is-"

"What's that gonna do to you?" - (RWBY Volume 3 Chapter 6)

Greed and Cinder's stories are body horror stories about what you'll sacrifice for power, and the power they are "gifted" by their masters, Father and Salem, is concentrated in their left arm.

Interestingly, Greed's power that transforms him into an inhuman monster is his "Ultimate Shield" that makes him invulnerable, which is the exact opposite of the "power" that Salem grants Cinder that slowly crawls up her left arm threatening to turn her into a monster makes her more vulnerable than most, because she doesn't have aura to protect those parts of her.

Both Greed and Cinder are the most defiant of their masters wishes, and often Father and Salem experience losses and failures because they underestimated Greed and Cinder's ambition. What should have been an easy win at Haven for Salem failed because Cinder was overly ambitious in her need to to win, to feel powerful, and Greed's betrayal of Father is simply because his own ambition is greater than his, thus he would never be content to work underneath him, to be less than him.

Both are charismatic individuals and good at convincing others to work with them. They like to surround themselves with others and both are the only ones under Father/Salem to have their own subordinates (Wrath doesn't count since it was always Father's intention to have him become Fuhrer). Despite them clearly needing human connection, their relationship with their loyal subordinates we are introduced to alongside them is... Not Super Great. They might care about them to a certain degree, but at the end of the day they ultimately view them as useful tools and possessions.

Both of them speak of an emptiness they feel inside of them:

"All of these souls inside of me, and yet I still feel so... empty"

"It's... an emptiness. It burns. Like a hunger."

It's ultimately Ling thst acts as Greed's consciousness, as when he doesn't show any remorse over killing Bido, the last of the old Greed's followers, on the orders of Father, Ling is the one who drags out all of his repressed emotion, being able to feel his pain and see his memories, he forces Greed to face them and how terribly he treated his "friends", and to reevaluate his priorities and self, pushing him away from Father.

"It's nothing personal. I'm just doing my job. I am sorry, honestly!"

"What have you done, Greed? Are you determined to prove you're a monster? What kind of sick creature... would kill his own friend!?"

"He wasn't my... friend..."

"Then why do you remember him? And are you gonna try and tell me Bido was just making everything up?"

"Those were the last Greed's memories! They're not mine!"

"THEN WHY ARE YOU IN SO MUCH PAIN!?

Pull yourself together, Greed. I'm warning you. I'll take this body back if you drop your guard"

"They aren't mine... Father purified me and purged the old Greed's memories. Those memories aren't a part of me any more!"

"No! You're wrong Greed! It's not that easy! They'll always be a part of you! You can't just erase them from your soul! They were the only part of you that you chose!"

"Look at them! Can you not hear their souls crying out? You abandoned them. Your real family! You threw them away like trash!"

"Fool. If you turned your back on something you wanted, YOU DON'T DESERVE TO CALL YOURSELF GREED!" (Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood episode 44, Greed and Ling)

If Pyrrha were to return, it's likely she would manifest and communicate more directly with Cinder than maiden predecessors usually do (though in all fairness we don't know the details of if maiden predecessors do or not), being more similar to Ozpin and Oscar's situation, rather than just being a part of her soul, because of how unnatural her interference with the fall maiden's power transfer was. The way Ozpin looks and speaks about it makes it clear he knows there is a very good chance he was recreating his own curse the GoL bestowed on him, and that this isn't like when he was the Hermit, giving his magic happily to the Maidens.

There's also the parallels between Ozma and Pyrrha's situations too, and how readily they accept their mission and fate, and in how they die, and I believe we still haven't seen the full payoff to those parallels with Pyrrha.

When Ozma reincarnates the first time, it's implied that he completely overtakes Ozma 2.0/ Oisín/Diggs (why do we have so many names for him), having not yet learned how to live with the souls with which he had been paired. It's not until much, much later when Oz is beginning to have doubts about whether he should stay with Salem , but still continues to go along with her plans that Oisín makes himself known, (and we know Ozma isn't used to him communicating with him with how suprised and shaken he is by this, which is strange considering he's been paired with him for a long while, unless Oisín hadn't made himself known before this) and is the one who finally pushes Ozma to leave Salem.

"What are we doing?"

With Cinder returning to Salem's side, full of doubt of whether she can go through with Salem's plan for her, to hurt and destroy herself for this power, and Emerald and Mecury (probably Neo too) likely betraying and cutting ties with Cinder too, which is going to leave her full of even more doubt, hurt, anger and additional feelings of betrayal and confusion. And more than anything, alone. Which would be the ideal time for Pyrrha to say to Cinder like with Ozma, "What are we doing?" To push her to reevaluate her priorities and self.

Imagine Pyrrha finally being able to manifest or communicate with Cinder, realizing she's bound to the woman who killed her. Knowing her emotions and memories in their entirety, feeling her pain and anger as if it were her own. And Ruby describing her as "Pyrrha thought that if there was even the smallest chance of helping someone that it was a chance worth taking" the Pyrrha who told Jaune "Everyone needs a little help sometimes" understanding what Cinder went through, and that if she couldn't save the world or make it better by attempting to kill Cinder, then, maybe as she is now, the one thing she can do to help save the world, to make it a better place, is by helping Cinder be better, helping her use her talents for good, like a true maiden should? (On a more fun note, imagining Pyrrha deciding to help Cinder but not missing any opportunity to be a playfully snarky little shit towards her. Because what is Cinder gonna do? Kill her again? Like tell me Pyrrha would not Do Both. And Cinder's not sure which she hates more: Pyrrha teasing her or feeling sorry for her)

Another interesting thing is how in The World of RWBY: The Official Companion states that Salem's goal is to possess all four relics, and to absorb the power of all the Maidens, which she means to at some point, absorb Cinder's power. It's likely part of why she favours Cinder and has such an intimate relationship with her (the Relic of Choice might have played a role in why Salem chose Cinder specifically) That transition of maiden powers from Cinder to Salem would be made much more seamless for Salem if she was grooming Cinder to be more like her, and was slowly becoming more Grimm, if she was treating Cinder like an extension of herself, because to Salem, she would be. Which is again, similar to Father and Greed, as Greed literally was an extension of Father created from him, and absorbed back into him when he became too disobedient and remade and reborn again.

The finale of Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood has Father absorbing Greed's philosopher's stone in an attempt to claim his power, but Greed ends up sacrificing himself by inverting his Ultimate Shield inside of Father, making his whole body incredibly fragile and vulnerable so Ed is able to defeat him. In the end, Greed ends up being the key to their victory against Father.

I want to make it clear that I don't personally think RWBY will end with Cinder dying or "defeating" Salem. At least, not in the traditional sense. I can draw as many comparisons as I like between Greed and Cinder but at the end of the day they're two different stories with different themes. And I don't believe that kind of ending would align with RWBY's. One of the themes of Cinder's story is to find a way to keep living no matter what. And as for Salem, the only way she can "die" is to learn the value of life and death, which would require a much more different approach.

But either way, I do believe Cinder will end up being their key to victory one way or another, similar to Greed.

FRUITS BASKET S2 EPISODE 18 + short Ep 1-17 english dub recap

AND I'M BACK WITH THE MADNESS.

Took a bit of a break from the Fruits Basket recaps because life happened and I wanted to focus a bit more on my art career and my webcomic. But, I came to miss doing the recaps! So, I'm gonna try and finish season 2 and do some of the left over recaps now in time for when Season 3 drops!

I HAVE however been re-watching the older episodes of Fruits Basket Season 2 with the english dub this time and I have a few notes!:

A shoutout to the wording used in the Yuki 'confession' scene on the beach with Tohru. However, in the sub the confession came across a lot more like platonic love to me and in the dub the confession came across a lot more romantic. (Especially in the episode after where Yuki says he doesn't regret kissing Tohru lol)

Laura Bailey stays killing it as Tohru. All the little vocal inflections are so freakin cute and make her sound more human! But that also speaks to the editing as well which is great. The balance between a little naive and scared and yet strong and determined in her scene with Akito was... amazing.

(Also... all of Akito’s most violent and hurtful moments are when it’s dark... I dunno I just found that cool and interesting lol)

Jerry Jewell in EPISODE 9?!?! His scene with Akito always gets me regardless but Jerry Jewell's performance was heartbreaking! Ah, I could cry. (I did) The little shake he did while declaring he wasn't in love with Tohru because he can't say that shit actually truthfully? 😩 Also... is he intentionally making Kyo’s voice sound a little deeper? It definitely sounded like it in that episode with Kagura. I like!!

While I LOATHE Akito, Colleen Clinkenbeard is amazing, I've never heard her sound this sneakingly evil! And yet... it's slightly carefree too. Reminds me a lot of Shigure. As I said before, Akito and Shigure's english VAs pair up so nicely in audible form.

I love how flirty Hatori was in the English dub when it came to him and Mayu’s episode. It was a really lovely performance from Kent Williams :) I always read that scene of Hatori just being friendly when asking Mayu out to get something to eat but this was a whole other wonderful take!!! <3

I LOVE KIMI TODO’S ENGLISH VA’S PERFORMANCE OMG. THANK YOU, CHERAMAI LEIGH 🤣

Kakeru’s English VA continues to sound cuter and cuter... 😘 Whassup, Aaron Dimsuke? I kid, lol

I lovee the fact that Haru calls Yuki ‘fragile and kind’ (two typically feminine presenting descriptions) and Yuki took it as a compliment! I dunno about the description of fragile as many people could take that offensively, regardless of gender, but the way it’s explained here it’s almost like he’s describing him as precious?... Coulda went with that instead...

I like the decisions for the moments where Mikaela Krantz emphasises on Momiji’s put on German accent and when she tones it down and return to his natural voice

But anyways... lol, this episode was... a LOT. Not an easy breezy one for me to come back to at all... I’ll be watching the english dub.

- Hiro's so cute at the start of this episode talking about his sibling and how he wants to look out for his mum. Of course, it's in the most Hiro of ways but this scene definitely warmed me up to him a lot more :)

That hair animation they give Rin is always great 😂 I hope Takaya-sensei is proud.

It’s so curious how Hiro speaks so honestly and true to Rin yet is so careful of her emotions. He’s never really been like this with anyone but Kisa, especially not the other teens or adults. It kinda shows how much seeing what happened to Rin by Akito’s hands really got to him and traumatised him. Of course, Hiro’s not just doing this because of his trauma but cos he genuinely cares!

- I noticed that there was a slight parallel between Hiro + Kisa and Rin + Haru. Kinda highlights why breaking the curse is important to Hiro and gives more reason as to why that event with Rin and Akito freaked him out.

- I dunno if this is intentional or just an animation glitch but I’ve noticed that in that long panning shot in the opening theme that closes into Yuki, Tohru and Kyo looking at the sunset, it looks like Kyo’s experession kinda ‘glitches’ in between a smile and a stoic look. Again, I don’t know if it was intentional, but I like to think it’s as a little show of Kyo not really managing to attain true happiness fully (for now anyway).

- (Also, I think that this opening song might come third in my list of most favourite opening songs in Fruits Basket history!!! <3<3<3)

- I’m super glad that Shigure and Rin scene didn’t go any further than it needed to... 👀 but the fact that Rin thought ‘Gure would be up for using her body as a bargaining chip says more about Shigure than Rin in my humble opinion...

Self-loathing? From Shigure? Unexpected. Empathy? For him? A little.

...Damn it.

I’m sorry. This scene is very gorgeous, well lit and beautiful and dramatic. But, I can’t not laugh at how early 00s gothic romance this is! But, I love it. It’s sweet and probably the first ‘raunchy’ scene we’ve gotten in this anime, ooo la! But, that kiss animation was kinda awkward for me, sorry. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I hate that Rin is AGAIN getting Outfit Appreciation Award when she’s literally killing herself with stress and worry but... amazing wardrobe as always. 5 stars.

Is it just me or does every zodiac member see Tohru as a parental figure or associate her with motherhood, except for Kyo?...

*mentally notes essay of Tohru being the depiction of being a ‘merciful God’ compared to Akito being the decpiction of being a ‘vengeful God’*

Heartbreaking.

but... WHY DO THEY ALL HAVE TO HAVE PARENTAL ISSUES?!

Also, Briana Palencia in this scene was amazing. Everyone is so, so good in this show! Dub and sub!!

...I totally forgot about this bit of Rin’s backstory. I love that they really highlighted how drastic the change was from happy family to an abusive household. Obviously, there must have been some cracks in the frame of the happy family and Rin as a child was inquisitive enough to see them. ...Only for her to be later punished for it.

Kazuma!!! He and Tohru just be constantly saving these zodiac kids, man.

- Rin’s parents might just be at the same level as Kyo’s dad on the ‘WORST PARENTS OF THE ZODIAC CHILDREN’ list. Well... until later...

Beginning to understand why they’re so attached and bonded to each other now. <3

- Also, lowkey, Kagura’s mum is great! From her protecting Kagura from going to the beach house because of Akito to her taking Rin in without question! And she seemed completely cool with Kyo too! Yay to good parents in anime!!!

- The confession scene between Haru and Rin is so pure and blunt yet romantic and just... so them <3

- I’m not even gonna put any screencaps from the final scene with Akito because I find Akito is just disgusting. But, really? Pushing someone off the balcony?! I mean... I remember why Akito’s feelings for Rin are so strong and darkly intense but I still can’t excuse their actions. I kinda don’t like that they presented this very abusive and violent moment as... poetic? I mean, it matches Rin’s ‘style’, I guess? But... this is just someone going past the limit.

- And her landing like that on the conveniently pointy stone? I was surprised she didn’t damage her spine...

I’m so happy I’m watching Fruits Basket again! This anime really is the best! And it DESERVEDLY won Best Drama at the CrunchyRoll Anime Awards! Yayyyyy! Sorry, if this ended on a weird note, I did enjoy this episode. Just a very dark one to return to 😅

1. 3 things you wish for

a ton of money in my savings account, because even now i still worry about the larger picture of my life, and where i’ll go or what i’ll do if/when i’m suddenly on my own one day. i want to be able to travel in my regular life (post-pandemic) and enjoy little vacations like the one i had last year, but i won’t feel safe to do that unless i also have a sizable amount still stashed away for the future...and i know that’s unrealistic given my fixed income but it’s a wish.

democratic control of the house, senate, and presidency in 2021. please for the love of whatever, if you live in the united states and haven’t voted yet, do that and vote blue. the world is literally burning down around my current home, and i’d just like to go a day without wondering if we’ll all survive the next four years.

the end of the pandemic. i’m really lucky, in that i don’t work and can stay safely home a lot of the time--and i’d much rather see as many people survive as possible than complain about how much fun is being taken away from me, so i can live without movie theaters and starbucks days until we’re through this.

but when i try to list a third wish, too many of them are things i wish for ‘once the pandemic is over,’ so that has to be the larger wish. someday i’d like to date somebody i like, who likes me, even just for casual fun hangouts...but that requires being able to spend time with people. i very much want to have semi regular getaways, where i take my laptop to a hotel for a couple days and just exist alone for a bit, like a mini vacation--but hotels here are closed. i wish for mental stability and physical health and creative productivity, and all of those parts of my life are currently wrecked by the pandemic and its effects here.

6. 3 characters that inspire you

there are so many that do, in so many ways. these are just the first three that come to mind.

stevie budd (schitts creek), because she turns a broken heart and a listless life into success and joy and family

parker (leverage), because she has unique abilities she feels totally confident in and she gets better at her weaker areas, like people

sherlock holmes (elementary), because every time he describes his mind i feel seen, and he channels his struggles into healthier outlets and makes amends when he fucks up

9. 3 things you like doing on a rainy day

curling up under a blanket; making sure i’m near a window or under a skylight, so i can hear it; and napping. i used to sometimes like going out in it, because i occasionally miss having grown up in washington...but right now i wouldn’t cuz last year’s immune system crash means i’m wary of inviting a cold or pneumonia into my life (again).

12. 3 apps you use the most

two dots, happy color, and numberzilla on my tablet, because i only use it for games and those are my current favorites. on my phone, i think it’s the clock app (for the alarm), the text messenger, and the news app. i still really only have a phone to stay safe and connected when necessary--i prefer to use the internet and social media on my laptop, so i’m not on my phone much.

19. 3 animals you’d love to take care of in your house

my literal brain looks at this question and thinks, the taking care of part isn’t a part i ever love--it’s a part i submit to as a requirement for getting to enjoy the company of animals, but i never love it.

if i try to be less literal, then my three picks are mellie, sebastian, and bailey, aka the three feral cats who come by our house for daily feedings and who are all sweethearts desperate for love who have valid reasons to be wary of indoor human life. i know realistically that we could never house them all, along with kinnie...but it’s still a dream i love, to be surrounded by cats again.

i think a turtle would be a great pet (that was my first pet wish as a kid and it’s never been achieved) but now that i’m such a cat person, i’d rather have a kitten any day than any other kind of animal, even the ones that sound fun.

23. 3 songs you listen to while cleaning

what i listen to while cleaning changes constantly, just like what i listen to in general. but my favorite songs to listen to while cleaning are usually also ones i love singing along to, so here’s three of those from recently:
