The music is a blast (I got to perform the music in high school band and it was so much fun) and I love time travel movies. You can't go wrong with the dynamic duo of Christopher Lloyd and Michael J Fox. I have the whole franchise basically memorized due to how many times I've watched it.

The Hypocritical Nature of Fandom Shipping

Pairings we should be concerned with in Teen Wolf

Please read this as I feel I have made some relatively important points

Disclaimer:

This is about the concerning age gaps and what people focus on, this is mostly regarding people who are Anti-Sterek.

This is primarily on AO3 because I couldn't be bothered to go on any other website when it is the prominent one people use.

I have made a separate blog in order to keep those who may send me hateful DMs and I don’t exactly want what could be hate mail in my personal DMs because I am arguably a fragile person, and I will absorb the hate until I need to seek a therapist.

I also come from England, where the age of consent laws differs from the State of California, in which it is legal for 16-year-olds to date anyone over 18, so long as they are not in a position of responsibility/authority – like a teacher or an officer[1].

I would also like to point out that I am not against any ship except ones with particular elements I am completely against, such as people who ship blood-related family members (Wincest) or age gaps larger than ten years. However I won't go after people for shipping them, I would block that content so I don't come across it.

I can't reply to comments as this is a side blog so

I realise I didn't talk about the predator and abuse of Isaac aspect, but that wasn't really the focus, I wrote this based on what I have seen on tumblr and twitter and even TikTok(?) and the only thing that really gets brought up is the age and how people who ship these fictional characters are "delusional", but thank you for adding to the discussion!!

Fanfiction is a transformative world. There are endless fandoms and pairings to write about such as those that focus on Formula 1[1] and Real Person Fics (RPFs)[2].

I hope to give a reasoned analysis on the pairings of Teen Wolf and the issues that I am aware of following the release of Teen Wolf: The Movie in January 2023.

This essay will focus on the hypocritical nature of shipping fictional characters with age gaps in Teen Wolf but will have a small comparison to other popular media. There will not be a heavy focus on age but rather than size of the gaps of these fictional characters.

TEEN WOLF'S ORIGINS AND AO3

Teen Wolf[1] originated in 1985s with Michael J. Fox starring as Scott Howard; the original production greenlit two sequels[2] leading MTV to adapt a modern version produced by Jeff Davis in 2011[3]. Teen Wolf has been met with a positive audience in the years of production with favourite seasons including season 3B and Season 5. The show continues to exhibit overwhelming popularity as the years go by as people rewatch it for nostalgia or because they wish to return to comfort episodes.

As with anything that exists, there are people who wish for their favourite characters to have an extended story or they do not agree with what the writers have decided is their fate, such as character death (Derek Hale in Teen Wolf: The Movie). Due to the disagreement viewers have with how their favourites end up, they will turn to fanfiction websites, specifically, in this decade, Archive Of Our Own (AO3)[4].

The AO3 tagging system is a complex aspect of the website but can be understood when the time is taken for people to find suitable fics relatively easily (when the fanfics are tagged properly of course). Tags often include spoilers regarding what is contained in the fanfic, typically “watersports”[5], “dub-con”/”dubious consent”[6], and “misunderstandings”[7]; but the tags could also include the author ‘talking’ to the reader which could include “no beta we die like [character]”[8].

THE STEREK SHIP AND THE POTENTIAL ISSUES

The Teen Wolf fandom contains popular ships such as, Sterek[1], Stydia[2], Stalia[3], Scallision[4], Liam Dunbar/Theo Raeken[5], Berica[6], just to name a few. A lot of pairings include Stiles Stilinski, most likely because Dylan O’Brien’s performance allows Stiles to have a chemistry with anyone he comes into contact with.

The pairing that contains the most fanfics is of course, Sterek; at the time of writing, Sterek contains 70,770 works which according to the last page of the date posted sort by began 26 June 2011[7]. Due to the popularity of the pairing, there is of course an exceptional amount of hate that comes with it, a lot of this hate can simply be found on Tumblr, known as Anti-Sterek(s)[8].

The chief problem that people who consider themselves to be Anti-Sterek have with the pairing is the age gap, Derek Hale is meant to be older than the rest of the main characters, however, it is unknown exactly how old he is meant to be due to the constant changing of his age (shown in the pilot screening presentation script where he was written to be nineteen[9]), but based on the events of that took place before the pilot episode, and for the purposes of this essay, it can be assumed he is around twenty-one to twenty-two at the beginning of the show[10].

Stiles Stilinski has obviously been written to be over sixteen years old, as he holds a valid licence. However, again, it is almost unknown when he turns seventeen due to the discrepancy in the timeline of events and almost contradictory statements made by the Teen Wolf calendar and the Teen Wolf Facebook page[11]; but it can be assumed Stiles turns seventeen during the events of Season 3 (3A and 3B). For the purposes of the writing, it can be assumed Stiles is sixteen during the pilot episode.

I am aware that shipping a sixteen-year-old with someone who is supposed to be (at the maximum) twenty-two is a large problem, however, if you consider reality, there are a lot of people who actively seek out relationships with people who are significantly older than them. When you contemplate actuality there are celebrities who have yet to face repercussions for dating people who are remarkably younger than them; Leonardo DiCaprio, and Sam Taylor-Johnson.

A factor that could be the reason that Sterek is scrutinized is due to the relationship that Kate Argent pursued with Derek when he was fifteen to sixteen. There is a lot of discourse on Tumblr and Twitter and even TikTok comments where fans equate the Sterek ship with that of what Kate did to Derek.

It is reasonable for viewers to abhor the relationship when based on these facts but, it should be remembered that a lot of fanfics involve alternative universes such as those of High School, and College where a lot of characters are specifically written to be the same age. I am not removing the reasoning behind the dislike of Sterek, I just want those who will take the time to read this analysis to realise that there are hypocritical aspects of shipping.

THE OTHER POTENTIALLY PROBLEMATIC SHIPS OF TEEN WOLF

It cannot be ignored that Sterek is not the only ship that has an age gap, there are viewers of the show who enjoy reading fanfics involving Steter (Peter Hale x Stiles Stilinski)[1]; this ship is also a problematic pairing due to the even larger age gap than that of Sterek’s, and this pairing on AO3 is considered to be the second most popular Teen Wolf ship with (at the time of writing) 10,766 works[2].

If you were to venture onto Tumblr and searched for the Anti-Steter[3] tag you would find less posts than the Anti-Sterek tag, and less frequent postings in general. Based on this, it would appear that there is more hate for Derek than Peter.

Another ship pairing that is more concerning, if fans of the show dislike large age gaps exceeding ten years, would be (Chris Argent x Stiles Stilinski) of which 866 fics are found on AO3[4], this is less than other ships but of course, still an interesting number of fics that have spanned 2012-2023.

The more popular ship containing Stiles and Chris is Stetopher which is a polyamorous ship that also comprises Peter. The works on AO3 are few in number, with only 739 published at the time of writing, these fics began being uploaded in September 2012[5].

This ship should again be scrutinised far more than that of Sterek because of the even larger age gap that exists. As aforementioned, it appears that Derek is greatly disliked due to the awareness of the Sterek ship.

Another ship that fans should be aware of is the Melissa McCall x Stiles Stilinski ship, of which there are 45 works on AO3, starting from November 2012 to 2023[6].

This ship is feasibly far more concerning considering Melissa is Stiles’ best friends’ mother, and undoubtedly this is the most unsettling pairing of all as Melissa would have watched Stiles grow up, and this would therefore be considered grooming.

In sum, the ships involving, Peter Hale, Chris Argent, and Melissa McCall should give rise to far more concern than that of Sterek. Again, this could mean that Derek’s character is far more hated, either because of Derek himself being written as something of an enemy in the first few seasons of the show airing, or because it’s easier to target pairings that are more popular than the other.

OTHER PAIRINGS THAT HAVE LARGE AGE GAPS BUT RECEIVE ALMOST NO HATE

The Vampire Diaries is also a popular show that aired from 2009 until 2017. The premise of the show is a seventeen-year-old Elena Gilbert falls in love with a one-hundred-and sixty-three-year-old. It is common lore that a vampire stops aging once they are turned, however, if people are concerned with age gaps of characters then there should be far more concern over the beloved shows.

Let’s not forget that popular fantasy books, such as that of A Court of Thorns and Roses and the Throne of Glass book series, also contain exceedingly large age gaps, it should not matter how old the characters are when they first meet, it should instead be about how many years apart they actually are. Yet, there is almost no hate found online regarding this aspect. When you compare this notion with that of Teen Wolf’s, there is a hypothetical question that could be raised, is the reason that Sterek is so hated down to it being popular, or is it because it is M/M pairing?

If an age gap is larger than ten years, that is when you should be concerned. I am not really concerned with age gaps in fiction being less than ten years, because it is fictional and I like the dynamic the pairing has, it is very rare that I read fanfics for any media but when I do, it is because I want more from these characters. If people in reality (where it is openly illegal to do so) are in relationships with large age gaps with someone underage, that is when you should troubled.

CONCLUSION

Teen Wolf is a popular show that generates a lot of discourse in the online community, it is probable that there is a heavy hypocritical nature to the pairings that people find. If people were truly concerned with age gaps exceeding two years, they would have more hatred for other ships in the show such as Marrish (Lydia x Parrish); however, it appears that Sterek is hated more due to how popular it is and could also be because Derek was written as a villain, especially in Season 2.

FURTHER POINTS

As stated in the disclaimer, I come from England and I write this with a different attitude, I am aware that the age of consent is eighteen in California, and it is illegal for anyone to leave the state with someone with the intention of having sexual relations. However, Teen Wolf is not real, and if you are getting exceedingly defensive and antagonistic around characters that other people ship and proceed to write long hateful messages to people anonymously on Tumblr to Sterek blogs and those who tag Anti-Sterek with claims that shipping Derek with Stiles is "pedophilic" in fact shows up the Sterek tag.

I expect that I could get hate for this, but I am not defending Sterek, I just hope I pointed out a few problems that I have found, I attempted to do extensive research, but I admit I would get more annoyed about the hypocrisy that I would have found.

I am not against people shipping whatever they want (look at the House of Dragons show) but I personally will not seek out ships that I don’t like and I don’t write hate because what’s the point? It’s not like it’s going to change anything, people enjoy what they enjoy. If you personally attack someone for who they ship, you are a terrible person. If you don’t like something, just block it so you don’t ever see it!!! IT IS THAT SIMPLE!!!

Varl (Horizon)

Aloy did not appreciate this good dude nearly enough. I want Varl to be my BFF. T_T But HFW happened and... I won't say too much about that or we'd be here all day. He's alive in my head and that's all that matters.

Cimorene (The Enchanted Forest Chronicles)

Cimorene! She's no-nonsense and clever. She wasn't a fan of being treated like a princess so she went and "got captured by" a dragon so people would stop bothering her, and helps her cook and organize her library. I mean, goals.

Loki (MCU)

I wasn't into the MCU when it started getting big, and in fact I didn't see any of the movies until I read someone on Tumblr (c. 2012) going on about (paraphrased) how awful it was that people liked Loki because he was the absolute worst and if you liked him you were a gross immoral person and you should feel bad. So I went and watched this Avengers movie everyone was talking about. And guess what haters? He is terrible and I love him.

Parker (Leverage)

Although I am not brave enough to throw myself off buildings, sometimes I amuse myself by thinking "what would Parker do?" and since a canonical option involves stabbing someone who's bothering her with a fork and jumping out a window, the thought cheers me up even if I can't do that.

Aziraphale (Good Omens)

He just wants people (aside from Crowley) to leave him alone in his bookshop. He never fits in with his "side" but tries to do what they want anyway, because that's the good thing to do, and he wants to be good. I can relate so hard, buddy.

Milo Thatch (Atlantis: The Lost Empire)

Ok so... I totally had a crush on Michael J. Fox and I was already interested in linguistics back when this movie came out, and then here's a main character voiced by him who was a linguist! Milo had to be my favorite :D

Elena Fisher (Uncharted)

I will fully admit that some of my initial love of Elena came from her AI covering my panic-flailing self early on in the first Uncharted game (I'm THE WORST at games with guns, even on easy, it's actually embarrassing) - but she impressed me right away when she was not overly impressed by Nate. And her snark game is on point.

Zeb (Star Wars Rebels)

I feel like Zeb needs more love. Comic relief character who actually has an unbelievably tragic backstory! And his story has so much untapped potential! We never really get to explore what happened with Lasan, and then then dump Kallus in there with his defection to the Rebellion and his whole *handwaves* history with the Lasats and eventual apparent (b)romance with Zeb - and the show had so little to say about it! Huge angsty storytelling miss right there. (Dave why.)

Brian Finch (Limitless [2015])

This dude! Lovable but he would be SO exasperating to deal with IRL. His arts-and-craftiness just resonated with me. He was always making stuff out of toothpicks and yarn and papier mâché and clay and and and- I'm still mad this show only got one season.

My great aunt, Catherine. My dad refused to let my mom use a “C” when it had already been decided I would be called “Katie”, so my legal name is “Katherine” to match that demand, haha

2. When was the last time you cried?

Just a few days ago, when my one sister told me she was helping me meet Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd at the convention I’m attending soon. I was so touched and overwhelmed by the gesture and the knowledge that I will be face to face with two actors I’ve longed to see my entire life

3. Do you have kids?

No. Not yet, maybe never - who knows what the future will bring

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

Absolutely. I try not to be too snarky, though, cause I don’t ever want to push it and accidentally hurt someone’s feelings unintentionally

5. What sports do you play/have you played?

Field hockey, American soccer/European football

Eyes and voice. Also two factors that contribute to what attracts me to people, haha

did you watch family ties because of BTTF or vice versa?

Yeah, it was mostly because of BTTF. When I was first introduced to the trilogy at about 10 years old, I also remember catching 2 reruns of Family Ties on TV and being excited to see Michael J. Fox in a role other than Marty (which is pretty much all I knew him as). But I didn't have any interest in watching the show past that one instance, and eventually the obsession with BTTF faded as well.

Until! Covid hit. Caught a BTTF marathon on TV one day, spiraled back into Intense Special Interest Mode and decided I may as well devour all seven seasons of Family Ties in the span of 3 weeks while I was at it.

Let's say WIndy has already been ordered as a show. But what are the factors that make them choose to produce the whole show, rather than just the pilot? Thanks.

The simplest answer is there's name recognition associated with the new show, sometimes it's the creators or producers (Spielberg) and sometimes it's the actors (Michael J. Fox). Both men had straight-to-series shows and both shows were cancelled after the 1st season, so it's not always a sure bet. Other times it's because it's based on a very well known IP, like Dune spinoff The Sisterhood, about the Bene Gesserit, that WarnerMedia ordered straight-to-series for a streaming service that doesn't even exist yet.

I think why Walker went straight-to-series were 3 things: Jared, well known IP, and an upcoming writer strike that got derailed by Covid.

Windy may have been ordered straight-to-series due to: Jared, Walker, and classic western is popular right now.

In 1988, when I was setting up this all-volunteer charity, Be the Star You Are!®, had anyone told me what a challenging journey it would be, I probably would not have even begun. Good thing I didn’t have a crystal ball! When I launched BTSYA as a 501 c3 on 9/9/99, I was naive enough to believe that if I built it, they would come. I was thinking the “they” would be donors to make the mission of increasing literacy and producing positive media messages to empower women, families, and youth a reality. Instead, hundreds of organizations and shelters contacted me asking for help. Without any funding from state, federal, or corporations, it became clear that small individual donations would be necessary to keep the nonprofit afloat. At one point, our bank account was down to forty-three cents, I couldn’t write any more checks, and my heart sank as I contemplated shutting down this organization that was already serving so many. 

But then a big package of letters arrived in the mail from incarcerated kids with whom we had been working thanking us for the gifts of books and the reading circles. Some wrote that the book we gave them was not only the first book they had received, but the first gift. A few wrote that had Be the Star You Are!® volunteers and assistance not been in their lives, suicide may have been the best option. Obviously, we couldn’t abandon our goal of serving those in need.

Somehow, we pulled through those dark moments, and today, as we begin our 25th year of being a 501 c3, we can all take pride in the dedication and hard work that is truly making a positive difference in the lives of people not only in America but globally. Thousands of teens have volunteered over the years. Many of those are now in their forties with families of their own. BTSYA has created numerous outreach programs including book reviews, disaster relief, pop-up concerts, events, publications, writing classes, and so much more. This grassroots charity has become a mighty empowerment vehicle.

With no paid staff and all volunteers, since receiving our 501c3 status in 1999 Be the Star You Are! has achieved the following:

Served 558,927 individuals and families

Donated to 118 organizations 

Logged 770,999 volunteer hours and growing

Distributed $2.1 million plus in resources

Collected and donated 1575 pairs of shoes to women in poverty around the globe.

Broadcast 2200 unique hours of positive programming through radio broadcasts.

Published 6 signature award-winning books, Be the Star You Are!® 99 Gifts, Be the Star You Are!® for Teens, Be the Star You Are!® Millennials to Boomers, No Barnyard Bullies, Family Forever, and Miracle Moments®,

Written and published over 2530 book reviews in collaboration with The Reading Tub and Express Yourself!™ Creative Community.

And, since 2010, Be the Star You Are!® has been honored as a Top NonProfit by Great NonProfits and GuideStar (now called Candid).

Her active involvement in student council, where she held the position of freshman vice president and upcoming sophomore president showcases her passion for being a leader and a voice for the grade. Demonstrating dedication to important causes, she competes in speech events and serves as a mentor and officer, engaging in meaningful discussions for the past two years. With over a decade of experience in classical dance, particularly Kathak, Charvi has honed her skills as a graceful performer. Her intellectual curiosity extends beyond her artistic pursuits, as she finds genuine interest in exploring the intricate connections between human behavior and the legal system through the study of law and psychology. 1575 Pairs of Shoes Shipped to the Shoeless!

In partnership with 5 A Rent-A-Space and Mark Hoog’s State Farm Insurance, Be the Star You Are!® wants to thank all the supporters who donated to our shoe drive to support micro-entrepreneurs, mostly women, in developing countries to help them build self-sufficiency, and to benefit their local communities by supplying much-needed affordable shoes.

With the help of the community, we were able to collect 1,575 pairs of shoes. Teen chairperson, Ella Kalpakjian, who spearheaded collecting shoes from our local schools commented, “WOW! This is a lot of shoes!” George Burnz, manager of 5 A was pleased as he believes that this effort epitomizes the meaning of “community caring.” Mark Hoogs stated, “Thanks to the generosity of SO MANY people in our community in Lamorinda, 1,575 people will have shoes that may not have otherwise had them - allowing them to work and go about their daily life activities more safely...something we're fortunate to be able to take for granted.”

The partners and volunteers watched with pride as the last bags were loaded onto the truck on their way to being shipped to countries in poverty.

Hello everyone Ricky Goldman here.

Its UBW:On Home Turf.

1st match is Saxon Huxley vs Magnificent Matt Fox. Yes that's right former NXT UK Saxon Huxley in action. Matt runs out the ring and backs off from Huxley but does get in the ring where hes met hy Saxon,Matt then tries to get the upper hand until Saxon turns the action around to his advantage. Matt is back into it again but not for long as Huxley battles back even though Matt kept trying to fight back into it but in the end with a spinebuster powerbomb your winner is Saxon Huxley.

Onto the next match and out comes Tom McManus that's right yes back in UBW he's interrupted by Amir Jordan and here comes his opponent. Its Amir Jordan vs Gaia Hox. My 1st look at Gaia here as both men jockey for position. Gaia did indeed impress me here as Amir got back into this as he tried to put Gaia away for the 3 but couldn't get it done. Gaia almost got the win but Amir kicks out which annoys Tom and Drill at ringside. Gaia covers Amir and Tom holds Gaias foot on the bottom securing him the dub.

Next match is Big Guns Joe vs Joey Hayes. Gia Adams attacks Joey here comes Harley Hudson to make the save. Joe grabs the mic and it's now Joey Hayes and Harley Hudson vs Big Guns Joe and Gia Adams. Decent match here but couldn't see it because of kids in front of me eurgh but Joey Hayes and Harley Hudson get the win.

Next one is Sam Gradwell vs Rob Drahe in a number one contenders match winner will face Saxon Huxley at a future show. Both men trade head locks as the bell rings. Yes that's right former NXT UK star Sam Gradwell in action here as Rob gains the upper hand but Sam wont give up as both men trade chops,blows and power moves. Both men fight it out and come close to winning but it was a bump into to the ref by Rob followed by a DDT that gave him the victory.

For the next match its Crashboat vs Sinergy. This was a brawl to start as Sinergy were the ones on control to be honest they dominated most of the match but Crash Boat did get back into it but not for long at all as Sinergy were back into it power moves and hard shots. Here comes Crash Boat again and they look to quickly put it away but Sinergy slowly take over but its Crash Boat with the victory and a much needed win for them.

Next up before the main event is Issac North vs Wing Commander Nash vs Drill vs Nsereko in a fatal four way match. Issac took care of Nash outside the ring as Nsereko went after Drill but now its Nash going after Drill as he controlled most of the action but here comes Nsereko,he and Drill fight it out. Drill pins Nash falls onto of him and pins Drill for the winning fall.

The MAIN EVENT! is Lance Revera vs Phillip Michael for both the Wrestle Island and UBW titles. Lance takes advantage right off the get go thanks to outside distractions from Matt Fox and Stacey Rose. We see a suicide dive from Phillip to Lance outside the ring the ref then throws out Matt and Stacey from ringside. A brawl ensuses outside and around ringside before going back in the ring. Lance gains control but Phillip battles back,he goes for the 3 amigos but Lance almost gets back in it,Phillip then hits an RKO to no avail. The Fame ass-er from Lance and both men are down. Both men trade blows,Phillip hits a spring board DDT,both men roll each other up and pin each others shoulders to the mat resulting in a draw. Lance then low blows Phillip and out comes Rob Drake hes cashing in his match. A top rope DDT to Rob but that didn't stop him,a DDT of his own from Rob and we have a new UBW champion.

It was a decent show and I give it 6 stars out of 10.
