Yeah I have! It took me a while to get around to it, but I watched A Place Further Than the Universe recently. And oh my gosh, I loved it so much! The characters were wonderful, the animation and music were perfect, and it was so heartfelt and wonderful.
Tumblr media
I’ve actually written a couple pieces about it:
A Friendship Wilder Than the Universe
Watch ‘Til I Drop: Yorimoi and a Good Immaturity
And I might have one more in me, too haha. It’s in the drafting stages right now.

There’s something I’ve been wondering; is kitten older than you, younger, or the same age? Does he have a little age, or does he just shrink into your spoiled baby boy like a gender-swapped Umaru-chan?
Out of the two of us I am actually the oldest. By 8 and a half months. So for about 2 and a half months we are the same age. I am twenty right now and Kitten is still nineteen.
Unless Kitten grows out his facial hair, people tend to know that I'm the older one out of the two of us. Maturity wise it varies between us. Mainly because we both can be quite immature. Lol
Thank you for the questions Lil Ones! We hope to hear more from you!

A-kon Artist Alley: Art Theft & Staff Indifference
Last weekend i was at A-Kon, an anime convention in Ft. Worth, Texas. this was my 3rd year tabling at their artist alley and almost certainly my last. while i’m disappointed to say that, what took place over the weekend was unacceptable and disrespectful to every creator that bothered to show up there.
if you are a creator who has ever been to or have considered tabling at an artist alley, please consider reading. thank you.
before i continue, i’d like to say that i don’t blame any one single person for this, and i do believe that there were lots of people trying to do the right thing, but ultimately those who have the responsibility and the power to protect the artists failed to do so. i am making this post because i think it is important for as many artists as possible to know what happened at A-kon 2018 in the hopes that the staff is more aggressive about their own policies in the future - and if not, at least let people know to avoid a convention where important rules that keep thieves OUT of artist alley are ignored.
moving on to the events of the con:
on Thursday evening i set up my table next to an empty corner table. the tables are set up in an island format, so every island has 4 corners which get 2 tables instead of one to form a square shape. when i came in Friday morning - the first day of the con - the corner was still empty.
about halfway through the day, a few people arrived to start setting up there. at first i thought they were late, but i later found out that they were waitlisted and were offered the table to replace whoever was originally supposed to be there. this will be important later.
a few hours later they ended up setting up this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now a setup like this is typically something you see in the vendor’s hall, where actual companies sell licensed products and other merchandise not made by the vendors.
this setup is highly uncommon for artist alley and most certainly violates both clauses of this A-kon artist alley display rule:
Tumblr media
not to mention another rule stating you can only take up 4 feet of space behind you, where they had an entire table set up for their merchandise.
you can trust me when i say that at most artist alleys there is not only not enough space for this monstrosity to be set up to begin with, but would be asked by staff to be torn down almost immediately.
but that is really only the tip of the iceberg, because the red flags started going up way before they finished setting up.
although the pictures are a bit blurry, you may notice something strange about the products on display - they all look like they’re from different artists.
and indeed, many of them are - in fact, it seemed apparent as the weekend went on that none of the work for sale at this booth was made by the people running it.
now proxy selling at A-kon and many other cons is allowed, but this is what the rule says:
Tumblr media
This is where my earlier point about this table being waitlisted comes in to play. I have to assume the people running it were local, because a staff member implied that they were basically notified during the weekend that a table had opened up and they could come in to take the their place.
When you sign up to most conventions, you are asked to post a portfolio link, and part of doing that is to vet the people coming in to make sure they have.. well, a portfolio. You want to make sure the artists coming in to artist alley will be selling their own work.
and while I have no idea what link they gave the staff, the only website they had on display was an Etsy page where you can order a custom made phone case.
No tumblr, no deviantart, no pixiv, no instagram, no website..nothing. So there’s only two possibilities here:
The vendors set up a fake portfolio site full of some or all of the art on display here claiming it to be their own, and A-kon staff believed it
A-kon didn’t look at their portfolio at all, and just took the $275 from them without bothering to vet them at all
Now some of you may be asking why I would assume they would lie about claiming some of the art to be their own. Here’s where things get a little weird.
On Saturday, I was able to find one of the artists who made the art on one of the pillows they were selling. They were an artist in a foreign country thousands of miles away not attending the convention. The artist told me that the vendors had permission to use their art, but the story the vendors told was a little..different.
When the staff confronted the vendors about concerns of stolen art, the vendors claimed that the artist was their sister, but that she was currently on vacation and couldn’t attend. In fact, they claimed that all the art they had for sale was made by their family.
now why would you tell a bizarre lie like this if you had permission from every single one of your proxy artists? the only answer is that they clearly didn’t, and needed a blanket excuse to cover all their bases.
to make matters worse, they also refused to give any contact information to the staff for all the artists in their “family” that were not attending the convention.
the staff didn’t really seem to care about this at all? i found that a little bizarre. this kind of behavior is beyond suspicious and i can’t imagine how naive you’d have to be to think nothing fishy was going on with sketchy “proxy” vendors who have no problem lying straight to your face. if your one job is to enforce the rules of Artist Alley and you can’t do it, why are you even there?
anyway, it gets worse.
take a look at some of these phone cases they had for sale.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
what you’re seeing here is not just a mix of fanart from various artists, but also copyrighted photos of the K-pop group BTS and officially licensed art and stitches from anime like Himouto! Umaru-chan, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Free!, Diabolik Lovers, Ouran High School Host Club and probably many others I don’t recognize.
Just to point out a few easy-to-find examples: here’s a stitch from the anime Himouto! Umaru-chan, ripped directly from the anime and printed out in a phone case.
Tumblr media
How about that Halloween-themed FMA:Brotherhood phone case in the first image? Well, just type “fullmetal alchemist halloween” into Google Images and it’s the first result!
Tumblr media
This is a scan of official promotional art for FMA that there are hundreds of results for.
How about that one of Free! Iwatobi Swim Club? Turns out it’s official art from the Free! Eternal Summer 2015 Calendar - sold, created, owned and licensed by none other than Kyoto Animation, the studio that made it.
Tumblr media
I can’t speak for all the fanart on display here as it’s very difficult to find just through google searching, but even if I could, I wouldn’t want to drag them in to this - because at least one of them was aware this was going on, even though the vendors lied about who they were. all I can tell you is that many attendees and artists in my island recognized many art pieces on their products and knew the artists were not present and not aware their art was being sold.
so while these vendors may have had permission to proxy sell some of the stuff they had, it’s fairly obvious that this wasn’t the case for everything, and they lied to the staff to try and cover it up.
as I said earlier, on Saturday I expressed my concerns about the items on sale to the Artist Alley control booth. I even went through the trouble of showing them how to find the art through reverse image search to prove that it was stolen while trying to run my table solo. funnily enough - as i was talking to a staffer at the control booth, an attendee was also complaining about the same booth to another staffer with pictures of art on pillows from artists he recognized who were not present at the convention. I thought that was funny.
at the end of the day, a number of staff appeared on-site to question the vendors about their merchandise. statements were taken from me and a few other artists nearby, and it looked like maybe something would be done about this blatant theft on display.
but as i returned to sell on Sunday, the booth was still up and fully operational. when i asked why, the A-kon AA staff replied via twitter that it was “pending review”. another artist was told that they traced all this art (lol) and that tracing was allowed, however this contradicts another one of their rules:
Tumblr media
by this point, the con was almost over - the vendors had gotten away with it, despite numerous voices of concern coming from artists and attendees alike - and indeed, this booth was allowed to sell stolen art all weekend uninhibited to unknowing attendees.
as for what other creative excuses the vendors may have had to tell the staff, if the staff even cared or they were actually duped by their obvious lies i don’t know.
here’s the point: artist alley is supposed to be a space for individual artists to sell their own creations. and while some labor was at least spared on the phone cases, the centerpiece is clearly the art, and the art did not belong to these vendors. none of the art belonged to these vendors.
so let’s break down the facts about what took place here:
a corner table was sold to waitlisted vendors in artist alley at a-kon (this means a-kon made double their money on this corner table..really makes you think 🤔 🤔 🤔 )
the vendors’ products were not vetted as the staff was obviously unaware of what was being sold
the vendors broke multiple display rules and nothing was done
the vendors lied to staffers and were caught lying and nothing was done
the vendors were selling stolen art and nothing was done
the vendors refused to give out contact information they were supposed to have for the artists they were proxying and nothing was done
the a-kon staff either does not take their own rules seriously, enforce them in any way, or are incompetent or otherwise incapable of doing so
at this point, the artist alley at A-Kon may as well be a vendor space where greasy conmen and thieves can just slap art on whatever and make a killing, because that is how i felt after watching what was essentially a dog and pony show of A-Kon staff pussyfooting around an issue that should’ve been dealt with swiftly and sternly.
this shit shouldn’t fly and while the vendors already got off scot-free, i can only hope that shedding light on this will help with stopping this issue from spreading, because you can bet that if other art thieves catch wind of the fact that A-Kon staff don’t give a shit about enforcing their own rules that they’ll tag along for the free ride.
If you’d like to read the A-Kon artist alley rules for yourself, i copied them from the email and put them in this pastebin.
if you’ve read this far, thank you for reading, and if you know anyone who participates in artist alleys in any fashion, please share it with them if you found this concerning.

Era’s Anime Corner - Pop Team Epic (Overview)
What is there to say about Pop Team Epic? Well, if you’ve spent enough time online, you’ve probably seen images of these peculiar girls, even before the anime came out.
Tumblr media
For those of you that don’t know where this came from, let me explain. Pop Team Epic was originally a 4-koma, a 4 panel comic that was built around jokes rather than telling a story. It managed to stand out among the crowd thanks to the two main characters, Popuko and Pipimi, being, shall we say, unusual depictions of Japanese high school girls.
Tumblr media
So when an anime adaptation was announced I think a lot of us didn’t know what to expect. Would we get a proper story around these girls? Would they have to tone done the vulgarity for television? How many references and WTF moments could they possibly cram into a single season of an anime?
The answer to each of these questions are ‘Hell no!’, ‘a little’ and ‘a lot more than you’d expect’.
Tumblr media
The best way I can explain Pop Team Epic to a westerner would be ‘It’s like Robot Chicken but anime’. Each episode being full of short sketches that are adaptations of the 4-koma while also sprinkling in a few running segments and a single larger segments that I believe are original to the anime and are usually a massive reference to one thing or another.
Tumblr media
Kind of like with Himouto Umaru-chan from a few seasons back, a lot of the references are obscure and likely aimed more at Japanese audiences so a lot of them can be lost on westerners but they keep coming at such a rapid pace there’s bound to be plenty that you’ll recognize.
Tumblr media
Since each episode is technically half-length since the second half is the same episode with different voice actors and small differences, you can get through the show pretty quickly if you’re not bothered about mining through every little joke. It’s funny hearing the girls talk with the voices of older Japanese men but thankfully the creators knew that joke would get old quickly and had the female voices play first after the first episode.
Tumblr media
I really liked both the OP and ED songs for this anime. The Op is fast and full of surreal imagery that really draws you in and gets you excited for what you’re about to watch. The ED, in contrast, is a nice wind down that I’ve had a really hard time tracking down since it’s sung by whoever was the VAs for Popuko and Pipimi that episode so there are 24 different versions of the same song!
Tumblr media
I think that’s all I have to say. Thanks for joining me for Pop Team Epic Time and I’m sorry it took me halfway into the next season for me to get this done. The Overlord Overview should be finished soon. Thanks again and I’ll see you next Anime Time!

FEATURE: Head Space - "Interviews with Monster Girls" The Challenge of Being Different
Winter 2017 has been nonstop surprises on the comedy and slice of life front. Studio Doga Kobo, who we have to thank for Himouto! Umaru-chan are back with another adorable trash heap that is as new as it is nostalgic in Gabriel DropOut. Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid may just be the most visually impressive anime this season in addition to being over-the-top in every sense of the phrase. The most interesting among the comedy arrivals, however, has been Interviews with Monster Girls, taking a comedy sub genre famous for fanservice and cheap laughs and taking an approach as thoughtful as it is genuinely funny. Hidden within the high school gags surrounding the demi girls are an allegory for physical disability and chronic health conditions which, in a society which caters to a exclusively to the strict physical and dietary parameters of the modern, able-bodied human, can pose struggles that are invisible to the rest of us. Implicit in Takahashi’s investigation of demi’s girls is his growing understanding of their unique challenges that carry a powerful message regarding mindfulness and compassion.
Hikari’s interview with Takahashi showed that sometimes misconceptions about a condition can cause even more difficulties than the condition itself. Although it has yet to come up in Interviews, Takahashi’s questions alone show the potential for a variety of faux paux that might result from misguided consideration for Hikari’s condition. We can all sympathize with the plight of someone invited to a dinner party where the host incorrectly believes they are allergic to garlic. Although Hikari can pass for normal, this puts her in a position where she has to choose to remain silent about her problems or admit to what she is and expose herself to judgement based on those misconceptions, whether her condition is contagious and whether she actually has an uncontrollable urge to drink blood. That component of self-denial may have contributed to her excitement at hearing that Takahashi thought demi’s were interesting and wanted to meet one.
The genuineness and respect with which Takahashi approached Hikari about an interview was likely a key component to her participation. Early on Takahashi-sensei expresses regret over the fact that he has been unable to speak with any demis despite their being the subject of his research, it seemed, due to the fact that none of them were willing to meet with him. It unsurprisingly that they wouldn’t want to be studied under a microscope, especially when their kind has been the subject of a great deal of historic misunderstanding. Past that hurdle, Hikari having the freedom to speak, or even joke, about her unique daily troubles to someone who showed genuine interest became an opportunity to express herself and the gesture benefited them both, helping Takahashi’s research and leading to Hikari recommending Machi speak with him as well.
Machi’s obstacles are much more obvious, being a Dullahan affecting just about every aspect of her daily life, every simple action we take for granted is complicated by accommodating her detached head. Behaviors we take for granted like eating, bathing, and even sleeping require special restraints, shelves, and cubbies. To Machi, these hardships are just an accepted part of her daily life, but one that she is unable to share with her classmates. Though her situation is undeniable, her peers avoid potentially awkward conversations by avoiding the subject. It was Hikari’s candidness regarding Machi’s unique problems and her willingness to discuss her own problems being a vampire that acted as the foundation for their friendship. Hikari had already internalized the advice that Takahashi eventually gave to Machi, to be brave enough to take initiative and bring up her problems or make a joke about them to signal to others that the subject isn’t taboo.
Most importantly, Interviews showed us how easy it can be to make a difference if we take the time to understand another person’s struggles. During the course of their experiment, Takahashi is forced to walk a mile in Machi’s shoes by seeing just how restrictive being forced to carry around a human head can be. He thoughtlessly carries her close to his chest and Machi ends up with motion sickness because he hadn’t considered how she might be compensating for the movement of her body with her arms just like most individuals do with their necks. He also discovers how burdensome it can be to hold an object all the time, something we as the audience witnessed when Machi was forced to stop walking and put down her bag to answer a call on her cell phone. Using the experience as a lesson, Takahashi approaches the principle about granting Machi an exception to use a backpack rather than the school's regulation bags so she can keep both hands free.
The simplicity of the metaphor as well as the ease with which humor is combined with its commentary is a tremendous strength of Interviews. Where other premieres this season have their own unique senses of humor, none feel as if they have the same sense of purpose. Possessing a message without weighing down a comedy is a balancing act, especially in a story with such a light-hearted tone. Takahashi has at least two interviews left to perform and it’s nice to not only look forward to more jokes, but also what discoveries Interviews has to deliver about living life as a Succubus or a Snow Maiden.

Upcoming events of my Anime Circle
I will be completely honest. When I hold Anime Circle meetings, I barely pay attention to the screen. It’s not because I don’t like the anime the club is watching. It is because currently, I have way too many anime on my plan-to-watch list that I probably won’t be able to finish in a long time. Because of this, I do not want to start watching anymore anime for the time being. Instead, I enjoy hanging around a crowd of people with the same interests as me. To me, this is why I love running the Anime Circle. Lately, the club has been running smoothly. With the number of people on the club’s Discord chat and with how many people attend the meetings, I estimate that the club has 25 members. I’d say that is pretty darn high for a school that has about half a thousand students.
In the last two club meetings, we watched the shows “No Game, No Life” and “Himuoto! Umaru-Chan.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For those who have not seen “No Game, No Life”, it is a good show, but it is a bit too sexual for its own good. Luckily, lunch was about to end so I paused right before some very questionable scenes. Great timing by me! Anyway, I have been able to get the routine for the club meetings down now. Even with skipping the intros and outros, we are barely able to finish two episodes of anything, but it’ll work I guess.
As for the future of the Anime Circle, we have the school’s Open House and (hopefully) our first movie night to plan. During Open House, clubs and interest groups are able to present themselves to parents, students, and people who are thinking of coming to the school. The problem with our booth is that we cannot use the same décor we used in our last booth for obvious reasons.
Tumblr media
Luckily unlike during Club Fair, we have 20+ people that I am sure will be willing to pitch in some of their own anime DVDs and manga instead of a half a dozen hardcore weeaboos with dakimakuras (body pillows) and anime posters. As for the movie nights, ASB told me that we did not need our supervisor present; we just needed a faculty member to close up shop after the movie. Thank heavens! Trying to get a supervisor to stay with us would have been an awkward and painful process. Now we’re just waiting for the Activity Form to be approved by ASB. Thinking that we do get approved, we would have to do another marketing campaign so that the Anime Circle’s first movie night won’t be a failure unlike the Anime Circle’s first meeting. The movie “Your Name” was our number one candidate for the first movie night.
Tumblr media
I also need to figure out how to play movies in the MPR which means I have to talk to the school’s Microcomputer Technician, but I have the feeling that this would be awkward. Oh well; I’m going to have to do it anyway. Wish me luck!

Does your boyfriend watch anime? What does he think of Showtaro, his music, his voice, and/or other seiyuu in general? (Nosy anon just got nosier lol)
Hah, I didn’t expect this! Enjoying the questions though so don’t worry on feeling nosy lol
He does watch anime yeah, usually its things like Code Geass, JoJo Bizzare Adventure, Girls und Panzer and sillier ones that we both watch like Himouto Umaru-Chan. For this part of the question I’ve got him to actually answer hah. He says “He seems a nice guy and I can definitely respect how he’s kept himself relevant for so long, I like his own music (the more metal stuff, compared to his uta stuff etc. - though side note from kitarow again I do enjoy making him listen to that stuff when he’s driving and i’m in control of the music ~). Haha um I can’t say I have a strong opinion on his voice xD. I haven’t seen him in enough series to really know his voice acting skills, though singing wise he’s good. I know no where near the amount of seiyuus but the main one I knew beforehand was Ono Daisuke and he always made me laugh because of how camp his roles where before suddenly doing over the top masculine voices in recent years lol. I have a few of my own I like, such as Fukuyama Jun and Wakamoto Norio.”
Even though he’s not so much a seiyuu fan or anything he’s been good to me with it. Thanks to him I was actually able to go to one of the Orepara concerts to see Showtaro and the others live as well as when I mentioned I wish Show had posters he actually made me some instead. Not too mention he puts up with the amount of times I love to wind him up with Kiss Kiss Kiss by Ono Daisuke so it gets stuck in his head.
