omgggg happy 3rd anniversary to you!!!! here's to many more to come 🥂 for this celebration can i please request, from the general fluffy dialogue prompt list number 8 + 9 with mat barzal pls? thank you!
WINNIE MARTIN’S FAVORITE PERSON
this is the first of my tumblr-versary blurbs, so if that annoys you, block the tag 'taylor's tumblr-versary' love ya <3
8. "who let you be this cute today?" 9. "can we wait a second? i wanna take a picture of you right now." (from this prompt list)
you tried to go to as many games as you could, but you had a job so making it to every game was impossible. but, when you could make it to games, mat made sure to plan ahead and make sure you were gonna have a good time.
"you have a ride, right?" mat asked from the bathroom where he was still getting read.
"yes, i have a ride." you sighed. a moment of silence enveloped you and you knew something was wrong, "you okay? you need help with anything?" you asked.
"...yes." he hesitated.
"you can't tie your tie, can you?" you smiled.
"no." you could see the pout on his face as you made your way into the bathroom.
"ooh." you teased, "mathew barzal, who let you be this cute today?" you teased, enjoying the shy smile on his face.
"stop please. just help." he handed you the tie he wanted to wear, but you shook your head, "what?"
"mat, i love you, but your sense of style is awful." you winced, recalling every bad fashion choice you had seen him make. you set the tie on the counter and grabbed a different one, one that better matched the suit he was wearing, and began tying it.
"i should.be offended." the smile on his face told you he wasn't.
"i'm saving you from ending up on people's worst dressed." you shrugged.
he rolled his eyes, "so, before i go, can i see what you're gonna wear tonight?" it was no secret that you loved dressing up for games. it was fun and you liked doing it. you usually had little pieces with his name, number, or team colors. something to show your support, and mat loved it.
"nope." you shook your head.
"what? why not?"
"that ruins the surprise," you told him.
"you're gonna make me wait till after the game to see." he pouted.
"i don't know. maybe i'll be there at warmups." you shrugged, smiling when he perked up, "i think syd's bringing win, so maybe i'll go down with them." she was your ride, so going down to the ice for warmups made sense.
"okay, well, i guess i might see you during warmups." he kissed your forehead.
"maybe." you shrugged, wrapping your arms around his waist, "try not to fall, okay?" he rolled his eyes.
"i don't do it on purpose." he insisted.
you smiled, "score goals." you told him, leaning up and giving him a quick peck.
"for you, always." he hummed.
after he left, you got ready as quickly as you could and before you knew it, sydney martin was pulling up outside your building, "y/n yl/n, you always put the rest of us to shame."
"oh, stop it." you smiled bashfully.
"i'm serious. how you do it astounds me." she ran her finger over the sleeve of your jacket, "doesn't y/n look pretty, win?" you looked to the backseat where winnie was sitting, clutching a stuffed animal.
"pretty." she smiled.
"thank you, miss win." you winked before getting into the passenger side.
true to your word, you followed sydney down to the ice for warmups and helped keep winnie entertained. you could tell sydney was a little tired, so you did your best to keep her attention.
when the boys came out, you couldn't help but smile when mat tossed a couple of pucks over the ice to a few kids. winnie's eyes were glued to the ice as she watched all the guys skate around.
matt skated over, making his daughter laugh, blowing her kisses and even tossing her a puck, which she clutched to her chest along with her stuffed animal.
when your mat finally skated over, sydney took her daughter back so you and mat could have a moment. he smiled, taking notice of your jacket. he spun his finger, and you gave him a little twirl so he could see your jacket.
he gave a thumbs up and a nod, which made you laugh. he tossed a puck over and nodded to a kid behind you, whose eyes were glued. on mat, watching him mesmerized.
you nodded and waved. as he skated backward, he waved and winked. you rolled your eyes before looking at the puck. you smiled when you noticed that mat had signed it.
you turned around to the kid, who looked at you, probably after having seen mat point at him. you laughed before you handed it to him, "this is from barzy." you told him, "have fun tonight."
you turned back to sydney, who had her phone out and was probably recording and taking pictures of the whole thing, "you guys are so cute." she hugged you, "now come on, let's get some drinks." you smiled when winnie raised her arms in your direction, a signal that she wanted to be picked up.
after the game, and an ot goal scored by mat, you waited with sydney and the other girls in the tunnel. you were sitting with sydney, and the entire game, winnie was in your lap. somehow she had gravitated from her seat into your lap, but you didn't mind.
"look, win, there's your dad." you pointed when you saw matt walk out. she gave him a wave, but yawned and laid her head on your shoulder, "i'm tired, too." you patted her back, making the martin's smile.
you waved when you saw mat walk out. he made his way over to you and hugged you, pressing a kiss to your cheek, "i'm proud of you. overtime goal!" you cheered quietly, not wanting to disturb winnie too much.
"i know. all for you." he smiled into your hair before pressing a kiss to the top of your head, "you ready to go?" you hummed.
"wait, wait, before you guys go." sydney stopped you, pulling out hr phone, "can we wait a second? i wanna take a picture of you right now." she begged.
"fine." mat rolled his eyes playfully, but posed for the picture nonetheless. after the picture was taken, you were going to hand winnie off to her parents, but she clung to you.
"come on, we gotta go home, winnie." sydney sighed, flashing. youan apologetic smile.
"how about this? i'll carry you in the car, but after that, i gotta go." you offered, and she nodded, "all right, let's go." you switched arms and started heading int he direction of sydney's car.
mat walked by your side, holding your hand and talking to you about whatever. unbeknownst to you, sydney, who was trailing behind you and mat, was snapping pictures.
you set winnie in her car seat and waved, "bye, winnie girl." you blew her a kiss and she blew you one back, which you accepted and held close to your chest, which made her laugh.
you walked back to mat's car, "that felt very domestic." he told you.
"keep dreaming, barzal. let's stick to babysitting."
"i know, i know." he raised his hands in surrender.
as you got waited for mat to get into bed later that night, you saw sydney's tag and checked out the instagram story. it was a photo she had taken, without your knowledge, of you and mat walking towards the parking garage, hand-in-hand, winnie in your arms, her head on your shoulder with the caption 'her favorite person ever ❤️ @/yourusername'
mat hopped into bed next to you and saw the post, "you're right. we do look domestic." you smiled.
"let's stick to babysitting." he joked.

Michael Clifford hair timeline
Tumblr media
As some of you might know, this blog started from the frustration of missing certain things in the 5SOS fandom. I’m a 1D fan, I’m used to seeing masterposts about anything and everything. That’s very much not the case in the 5SOS fandom. So I figured, if it’s not here, I might as well go and do it myself. A while back I came to the conclusion there doesn’t seem to be a proper detailed timeline of Michael’s hair journey. So of course, I decided to make one. I heavily underestimated the amount of time this would cost, but I (mostly) had fun making this. So, now I would like to present you with the finished result. It should have every hair color ever in here, but if I somehow missed something or got something wrong, please let me know. I’ve tried my best to be as thorough as possible, but I only became a fan in 2020 and basically had to work my way through 5SOS history for this.
I used Michael’s instagram as a guide and filled in the gaps with interviews, tour diaries, etc. Thankfully he documented most of his hair changes on instagram, which made my job a little easier. So let’s get going!
I have combined 4 pictures into a collage, to prevent having to post close to 50 pictures below each other. The order of every collage is left to right, top to bottom.
Tumblr media
So we start with Michael’s natural hair color,. This is a picture I found on Google, I have no idea about the exact date. But this is his natural hair before he started dying it. The next picture is the very first time he dyed his hair, this was a red-ish brown. This picture was posted on January 2 2013. Then later on in the same month he decided to dye his hair darker, to a chocolate brown, which he posted a picture of on January 27. His first bold color happens about a month later. On March 30 2013 he posted this picture of himself with dark blue hair and some lighter blue highlights in his fringe.
Tumblr media
The next change comes June 19 2013. When the blue has been mostly removed, you can tell there’s some blue left in the fringe from the highlights, and the rest of his hair still has a blue-green tinge to it. This picture is a screenshot from the 5SOS vs. food video, Michael did post a picture of it on instagram captioned: “when I went blonde for a day”, but the color of that one is quite saturated. So is a better representation. After that, we move on to galaxy hair! The first picture with this hair was posted on instagram on June 19 2013. I thought this was a separate color from the 3rd picture in this collage, but it’s possible it’s the light playing tricks. Picture 3 was posted on June 26, exactly a week after the previous one. On July 6 we move on to the next change, bleach blonde! I think this is the first time he bleached his whole hair. Since the previous color’s were all darker than his own hair, he wouldn’t necessarily have needed bleach. As seen in the first picture of this collage, his hair wasn’t bleached yet. Except for the highlighted fringe. I assume a color removing product was used to get most of the blue dye out, because he said he went blonde “for a day”, which doesn’t indicate fading to me.
Tumblr media
The bleach blonde seem to stay for a while, because the next change is almost 3 months later. September 28 2013 brings the reveal of the smurf blue hair. This obviously fades over time, leaving a light, almost pastel blue color as seen in the screenshot I included from their Australia/New Zealand tour diary, opening for One Direction. As October 21 comes around we get a brand new color, bright pink! This faded into a pastel pink as can be seen in the screenshot from this thank you video, posted on November 24.
Tumblr media
Up next is reverse skunk, as posted on instagram on November 26 2013. This seems to last a good while, because the next change doesn’t come until 2014, judging by this twitcam from January 18 where the reverse skunk hair is still present. February 10, is when this picture of the purple hair was posted. Moving on to March 21, we get dark red, or maybe dark brown with red highlights, it’s hard to pinpoint what exactly this color is. There is no instagram picture for this one, so I’ve used a screenshot from the 5SOS Livestream to show this one. While writing this I discovered in this video, posted on March 13. where his hair was also this color already. The 4th screenshot from the Don’t Stop video, to demonstrate how long their hair lasted. The video was released May 18 2014. So I’m assuming it was filmed somewhere in (late) April.
Tumblr media
The next hair color in line is brown, the picture in this collage was posted to on May 18. However, going back through Michael’s instagram it seems like he already had this color at the start of the There’s No Place Like Home tour in Sydney, on April 30 2014. It’s likely he dyed it right before the start of  tour. The next change comes a little quicker, the earliest I could pinpoint this brown/blonde combo is May 18 at the Billboard music awards 2014. I can’t pinpoint, when exactly he got it done, but I’m assuming it was close before the BBMA’s. Moving on, we’re getting to the iconic green hair era. Again it’s hard to pinpoint when he exactly got it. There’s only 1 picture of it on his instagram, which was uploaded in July. The picture I used is from the Capital Summertime Ball 2014, held on June 21. The website describes it as “his new green hair”. So I’m assuming this is where he debuted it. After green we get this mystery lilac type color. I only found it in this Target Prank video on the 5SOS Youtube channel. Since they are promoting 5SOS1, which was released June 27, 2014, the video can be narrowed down to late June, early July of 2014. That’s as close as I could get it. I even went back to check if maybe they pre-filmed this in february/march and this was the faded purple hair, but the timeline still holds up.
Tumblr media
September 1 2014 is when we see a new hair color appear on instagram. For (what appears to be) the video of Good Girls Michael bleached his hair to a white blonde. A better picture is the screenshot from the Good Girls video I included. The next change we see is on September 4 at the 5SOS performance for the iTunes festival 2014. This means that either he bleached his hair a while before September 1 or it was just a transition before the red with the orange undertone. This color fades throughout September judging by the pictures on instagram. I probably should have included one in here, but you can easily find them if you look for them. However on September 29 it seems the color got a refresh, looking nice and bright again.
Tumblr media
The first picture in this collage, posted December 17 2014, shows the hair fading again. Then on December 18, at the People Magazine Awards the hair seems refreshed again. It looks to me as if the color has a slightly less orange undertone as well. But that’s hard to determine from 1 picture. The next picture, posted February 4 2015 shows the red has once again faded.  After the red he moves on to this purple color. The first time we see it on instagram is February 18 in a video from the studio. The picture used for illustration was posted on February 27.
Tumblr media
A better view of the violet/purple hair can be seen in the screenshot from the Japan Tour Diaries part 1. In part 2 you can already see the color fading again. The next picture, posted February 28 2015 shows and even more drastic fade, where his hair has turned almost blonde again. Then around March 15 his hair goes fully white blonde again. At the start of the ROWYSO tour in Portugal, May 4, Michael’s hair is still blonde. However 2 days later in Spain, on May 6, he seems to be back to a violet/blue color, like he had previously.
Tumblr media
Then May 24 2015 we move to the next change, (jet) black hair (sorry, it had to be done). On July 16 a touch of color is brought into the hair, with addition of a few colorful streaks in his fringe. right on time for the start of the next leg of the ROWYSO tour that starts in Las Vegas. On July 23 he seems to have added a feather extension in the mix. This may have just been a temporary thing, because I can’t find any further evidence of this beyond the 1 instagram picture. Then August 29 brings a drastic change. From black we move back to blonde.
Tumblr media
The blonde seems to last for quite some time. Judging by this performance of Hey Everybody, his hair was still blonde on November 11 2015 (the video was uploaded on the day of the performance, I checked). But then November 22 brings us red hair at the American Music Awards. Judging by other pictures on his instagram this seems to be a more true (less orange) red than in 2014. The red slowly fades, first to a more orange toned color in Bali (picture posted January 2 2016). And eventually it fades all the way to blonde wint a soft hint of red/pink in the 3rd picture, posted January 25 2016. Shortly after he premieres a teal hair color at the G’day USA red carpet on January 28.
Tumblr media
The teal color sticks around for a while, even during the first leg of the SLFL tour. The last I saw of it was on March 12 2016, at the Philippines show. Then in between the Asian and Euopean leg the color changes from teal to brown, as seen at the Sheffield SLFL show on April 5. Then in the break between their last Dublin show (April 27) and their Vienna show (May 12) he bleaches his hair again. After this the era of Michael frequently coloring his hair seems to be done. He stays blonde, at some point he grows it out until only the long parts of his hair are still blonde. As can be seen in this picture posted on October 16 2017. Then at the start of the Meet You There Tour in Japan (August 2 2018) the colored hair makes a brief return with this pink moment. It doesn’t seem to last long however, since I can’t find a lot about it after Japan. So it may have been a temporary thing.
Tumblr media
October 9 2018 he posts the first picture in this collage. It’s very possible this is faded pink from the previous picture. Or maybe he dyed it a lighter shade later on. After this the colored hair stops, but we do occasionally get various shades of blonde. The second picture, from November 16 2018, shows a caramel tone to his hair. In the third picture, posted on October 21 2018, we see sort of a dirty blonde. We end this timeline the way we started, back to natural hair. because of quarantine the bleached blonde grew out and eventually disappeared once he cut it. So we have come full circle. We started with natural hair and we are ending it with natural hair. If we get any more changes in the future I will be sure to add them to the timeline.
Finally, a few facts, for fun.
In total, Michael has had 29 color changes in a span of roughly 8 years.*
He’s had the most colors in 2013 and 2014 (both years he’s had 8 different colors)
The orange red was the color he had the longest, 150 days to be precise (based on the information available).
* Not counting fades or the “blonde for a day. Since they are part of 1 color or were just used to transition to another color. Also not counting the various shades of bleached blonde in the last collage, since it’s hard to tell if they are actually different, or if it’s light. I did count the transition from blonde to natural.

(x) (x) (x) (x)
This is the day Tom wears the infamous 'I <3 TS' tank top while they're all at the beach. (x)
Tumblr media
Jul 4th - The online mockery for the 'I <3 TS' shirt is quick to pour in. Daily Mail commenters are yet to shut up about it in 2021.
The party continues with a giant inflatable waterslide, body painting, karaoke, charades and fireworks. (x) And also Kesha and Haim getting tricked by Cara, Uzo and Ruby into thinking they heard scary noises in the night, and trying to call the police but not knowing their own location. (x) (x)
Jul 5th - The day after the party, when all the guests post their photos online.
Britany posts a photo of her & Ben, Blake & Ryan, and Taylor & Tom. (x) The internet has a field day with Ryan's unimpressed facial expression. (x) (Ryan later says that it's just his resting bitch face as he wasn't aware a photo was being taken. (x))
Tumblr media
Taylor posts several photos to Instagram of her celebrating the 4th July with friends, but doesn't post any pictures with Tom. (x)
Claire Winter posts a bunch of Polaroids, including one of Taylor and Tom kissing. (x)
Tumblr media
Abigail posts a photo to Instagram showing the banners Taylor put up to celebrate her engagement to Matt and the anniversaries of Cara & St Vincent (real name Annie Clark) and Ed & Cherry. (x)
Tumblr media
Jul 6th - Taylor and Tom fly out of Rhode Island (x) and arrive at LAX that evening. (x) They then get on a plane to Australia.
Joe attends the Warner Music Group summer party in London. (x)
Rumours are swirling that Tom is no longer in consideration to be the next Bond, due to his relationship with Taylor. (x) (x) (x) (x) (x)
Jul 8th - Taylor and Tom are flying on a commercial Quantas flight so someone is able to take a pic of them on the plane. (x)
Tumblr media
According to another passenger on the plane, Taylor plays Scrabble during the flight (presumably on her phone because nobody takes big physical board games on commercial flights and the creepshot of Hiddleswift on the plane suggests she wouldn't have had anywhere to put the board anyway). In hindsight, knowing how Taylor and Joe play lots of Scrabble together including online Scrabble aka Words With Friends, and how they stayed in touch largely via texting that summer, it’s very possible she was playing against Joe.
Taylor and Tom arrive in Sydney, where Tom is about to start filming for Thor: Ragnarok. (x) Aussie media, including daytime TV, goes nuts over Hiddleswift's arrival in the country. (x)
Flying from LA to Australia involves crossing the international dateline, so they would have left the US on the 6th July local time and arrived in Sydney approx 15 hours later on the 8th July local time.
Calvin's new song Olé, written for John Newman, is released. There is speculation that it's a Hiddleswift song, written from Tom's perspective and containing lyrics implying that Taylor cheated on Calvin with Tom. However, sources also told multiple outlets that the song was written and recorded months earlier, and its supposed links to Hiddleswift were just for publicity. (x) (x)
Jul 9th - Tom goes out for a run (x) and avoids answering questions about Taylor. (x)
Jul 10th - Taylor and Tom go out for dinner to Gemelli Italian restaurant in Broadbeach on Australia's Gold Coast. (x)
Tumblr media
Jul 11th - Taylor is named as the highest earning celebrity on the 2016 Forbes Celebrity 100 list, with earnings of $170m mostly due to the 1989 World Tour. If she and Calvin had not split up, they would have been the top-earning celebrity couple. (x)
Jul 12th - Taylor visits Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in South Brisbane. (x)
Jul 13th - Us Weekly makes a wild claim that Tom is planning to propose soon, and Taylor is going to say yes. The magazine cover also claims they're already talking about babies. (x)
TMZ claims that Taylor wrote TIWYCF, and that Calvin disrespecting Taylor following its release was the reason for their breakup. (x)
Taylor Swift really is the creative brains behind Calvin Harris' monster hit "This is What You Came For," and their relationship fell apart because he disrespected her when the song was released ... this according to sources connected with Taylor.
It's a fascinating story. We've learned an early fan rumor about the song is true, but to a deeper extent than anyone suspected. During their relationship, Taylor wrote the song, sat down at a piano and did a demo into her iPhone. She sent it to Calvin, who loved it. They both went into a studio and did a full demo with Taylor on vocals and Calvin doing the beat.
They both knew the song would be a hit, but Taylor wrote it for Calvin and both agreed it was a bad idea to let the world know they collaborated as a couple ... it would overshadow the song.
So Taylor, who kept the publishing rights, used the pseudonym Nils Sjoberg on the credits.
//
The problem in the relationship came the day the song was released. Calvin appeared on Ryan Seacrest's radio show and Ryan asked, "Will you do a collaboration with your girlfriend?" Calvin responded, "You know we haven't even spoken about it. I can't see it happening though."
We're told Taylor was hurt and felt Calvin took it too far.
It was a quick downward spiral from that point. One source called it "the breaking point in the relationship." The Met Gala was several days later, when Taylor danced with Tom Hiddleston.
Tree confirms to People magazine that Taylor did write TIWYCF under the pseudonym Nils Sjöberg. (x)
Calvin also confirms that Taylor wrote TIWYCF and goes on a Twitter rant:

Katy Perry tweets a gif of Hillary Clinton with a smug/'told you so' expression. (x) She also retweets an older tweet from May 2015 which reads, 'Time, the ultimate truth teller.' (x)
Tumblr media
#TaylorSwiftIsOverParty trends on Twitter (x) (x) and Taylor's Instagram comments are spammed with the snake emoji. (x)

Tumblr media
Tom mentions Taylor in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter: (x)
You're in the middle of a cultural frenzy right now because you're dating Taylor Swift. How would you respond to people who claim that you're involved in some sort of publicity stunt?
(Laughs.) Well, um. How best to put this? That notion is — look, the truth is that Taylor Swift and I are together, and we're very happy. Thanks for asking. That's the truth. It's not a publicity stunt.
Martha says at a Pepsi/World Emoji Day event that Taylor and Tom are 'both happy and free together. It's amazing, I'm all about people being happy in love.' (x)
Kim talks about Taylor and the Famous controversy in a clip from an upcoming episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. (x)
“I never talk shit about anyone publicly, especially in interviews. But I was just like I had so had it,” Kim says in the clip to her sister Kourtney. “I wanted to defend him in it. She legitimately quote says, ‘As soon as I get on that Grammy red carpet I’m gonna tell all the press. Like I was in on it.’”
“And then she just didn’t like the reaction?” Kourtney says in response.
“Yeah, and you know just another way to play the victim,” Kim replies. She then brings the infamous VMAs moment from 2009 by saying, “It definitely got her a lot of attention the first time… I just don’t think he should be punished for it still to this day.”
Jul 17th - Kim posts an edited recording of Kanye and Taylor's phone call. In it, they discuss the 'I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex' line and Taylor says, 'Go with whatever line you think is better. It’s obviously very tongue in cheek either way. And I really appreciate you telling me about it. That’s really nice.' However, nowhere in the Snapchat video does Kanye consult her about the line, 'I made that bitch famous,' which is the line Taylor insisted she had never approved. (x) The other Kardashian sisters retweet and support Kim. (x)
(The full recording of the call, leaked in 2020, confirms that Kanye never told Taylor he was going to call her a bitch. It also shows her reminding him that she sold 7 million albums before he had even heard of her, in response to him suggesting the lyric, 'I made her famous.')

Martha Hunt tweets, 'It's pathetic how quick our culture is to sensationalize a fabricated story...' (x)
Jul 18th - #KimExposedTaylorParty spends the day trending at number one worldwide on Twitter. (x) To the point where 0.8% of all tweets posted in the entire week from the 18th-24th use the hashtag. (x) (Assuming that 1/7th of the week's total tweets were posted on each day, that means more than 1 in every 20 tweets on the 18th used the hashtag.) #TaylorSwiftIsOverParty also returns.
Tumblr media

Gossip Cop, an outlet widely used by celebrity publicists to quietly squash rumours, says that Taylor did not submit any videos for consideration this year. (x)
Jul 27th - Taylor goes to the gym in LA. (x)
John Newman, singer of Calvin's song Olé, jokes, 'Supposedly we had a holiday where he was movin’ on from his ex-missus,' referring to the trip to Mexico to film the music video, which involved girls and a yacht. He also says he doesn't think it's his place to say what inspired Calvin to write the song. (x)
Taylor and Tom go for dinner at Hillstone restaurant in Santa Monica. One source claims they 'seemed to really be enjoying each others’ company.' (x) It is the last time they are papped together.
Tumblr media
Kanye makes a surprise appearance at Drake's concert in Chicago where he responds to Kim's Snapchat video for the first time, saying, 'All I gotta say is, I am so glad my wife has Snapchat. Because now y’all can know the truth. And can’t nobody talk shit about ‘Ye no more.' (x)
Cara appears on James Corden's show and talks about how she, Uzo and Ruby pranked Kesha and Haim at Taylor's 4th of July party. She mentions consulting Taylor and Tom first so that security knew what they were up to. She also says that Taylor and Tom got woken up at one point by all the noise they were making, and came upstairs together to find Cara and Uzo still making ghost noises. (x)
Jul 28th - Taylor goes to the gym in LA. (x)
Jul 29th - Sources close to Calvin deny rumours that he is planning to collaborate on music with Kanye. (x)

Today was an important day. Today I got to go to my 2nd Christopher Paolini book signing!! I first had the amazing chance to meet him at the Supanova convention in Sydney, Australia, in 2012 (3rd photo) where I gave him a letter and later learned he knew who I was from Twitter and snail-mailed me back a response which i obviously had to frame (4th picture). Today he completed my signed series by signing his newest book (TFTWATW), along with my first copy of Eragon that started it all for me 15 years ago; Eldest and of course Brisingr. He signed my copy of Inheritance in 2012 at Supanova, so that helped lessen the burden by one book. I'm never able to properly speak to the guy when I meet him in person - his books mean so much to me, and I'm so bad at social interactions - so at least I can say a bit more in this post! Thank you so much, Mr Paolini, I cant wait to see what other stories will come from Alagaësia ❤ (hopefully lots of Murtagh!!)

IUWorld Cybersecurity Governance, Risk & Compliance Part - II
Part II: User and Entity Behavior Management (10-minute discussion & demo)
Click to Watch Demo & Discussion
Jeff: Welcome to the 2nd Episode of IUWorld Thought Leadership Series in Cybersecurity GRC – Governance Risk & Compliance. A big welcome to all of you who have joined us in this webinar. 1st of all, let me introduce the team. My name is Jeff Chau, director, digital transformation from IUWorld.
With me here today is Snehal Contractor from Stellar Cyber.  Snehal is the Vice President responsible for Worldwide System Engineering & Technical Services.
Welcome Snehal for joining us the IUWorld Thought Leadership series. Next, I like to introduce IUWorld.
We are 20 years in ICT business; rooted in HK & Macau and what we now call the Greater Bay Area. Our clienteles range from banks & financial institutions, Government & NGOs to commercial enterprises & Gaming resorts. Today we specialize in Cybersecurity services with focus on GRC innovations.
The way we work is, through these technology innovations, to craft organizational business case for business resilience.  I like to call it “Transformational Project”.
Let’s move on to today’s topic – user entity behavior analysis (UEBA).
Recognising the growing importance of Regulatory Technology (Regtech), one of the key aspects is to look into user & entity behavior in an organization for prudential risk management & regulatory compliance.
Let’s take a look at the definition of UEBA. It really is about whether one has visibility into its user / system within their data, network host.
What it means is how one is able to monitor system-to-system communications and from human interactions with applications & the ability to identify malicious insiders / external attackers infiltrating their organizations.
This is a use case of Regtech on analytics of activities – how AI can help to draw insights from these behaviors (what is considered normal or anomaly that can be identified in a timely manner).
It is indeed for transparency, consistency & standardization how organization delivers sound interpretation the regulations.
JEFF: Hello Snehal, today I want your thoughts on User Entity Behavior analysis – UEBA — and how you see it transforming Governance, Risk and Compliance
SNEHAL: Jeff, thanks for hosting another session with us. And I could not agree more. UEBA is transforming cybersecurity and is in fact — center stage — because of our new normal
Our customers and partners say now they have many new remote users—changing all your baselines and creating new attack vectors
And many organizations have even more cloud and SaaS infrastructure—potentially limiting visibility and loss of control
With these challenges, UEBA ensures your SOC team can more quickly uncover complex attacks—Users and Entities at the end of the day a strategic way to look for complex attackers
JEFF: So are you saying that UEBA is pretty strategic with our new normal?
SNEHAL: Correct Jeff, and UEBA needs more than SIEM logs, you need network traffic, and application awareness, cloud and SaaS awareness. By correlating data across a broader set of tools, you can proactively piece complex attacks together across all IT infrastructure. SIEMs alone lack this comprehensive visibility and force you to use your talented security analysts to write queries.
We see AI – artificial intelligence— as a key enabler to help a broader community of companies take advantage of advanced SOC solutions. Computers are good at seeing patterns. AI is a way to help SOC teams scale, so they can focus on strategic work.
JEFF: I see, AI is hot topic here in Hong Kong — Before we dig deeper into UEBA, can you share the common challenges your customers had before you helped them?
SNEHAL: Even with all the right tools in place, a lot of our customers shared failures rather than success. The issue is visibility – organizations are faced with users and entities virtually everywhere.
In the cloud
On premise
At home
Passing through the physical network
Your attack surface is bigger than ever — and — dynamic
JEFF: I see this is why siloed tools won’t help, you need to look across everything and in between things too!
SNEHAL: Correct Jeff, we call this comprehensive visibility and have patented sensor technology that ensures you see across cloud, endpoints, network and users—anywhere!!
JEFF: For the new normal, scalability & interoperability across heterogenous environments are essential then.
JEFF: can you show our audience this idea of comprehensive visibility—how do you track a user or entity’s behavior?
SNEHAL: Jeff, sure let me open the GUI and draw your attention to this COLLECT button. As you can see on the left, we ingest lots and lots of sources of data. On the right, you also see connectors that help us gather user and entity data from AWS, Microsoft365, Google Cloud, and also email, Syslogs, network. From these data, we are extracting user and entity information. Now, let me drill into an event. Here, I can show you the power of our Interflow records, that capture everything about each incident of user and entity behavior.
We perform Deep Packet Inspection – DPI – on all data ingested and that helps us see even more into your attack surface
We can see DNS tunneling attacks. We can tell you what applications are being hijacked. We fuse all this data with 3rd party threat intel like geolocation to ensure you have a complete picture for security analysis.
JEFF: Snehal, impressive, I also see it is readable and thus I am sure you can search on this information
SNEHAL: Correct Jeff, we have a single data lake where all this meta data is stored and we perform big data analysis on it to help you see trends – when user or entity behavior changes, our AI highlights this as a critical anomalous detection.
JEFF: Snehal can we now go deeper on user behavior, I think you have some interesting insights there.
SNEHAL: Thanks Jeff, we do. Today’s hackers don’t attack you in the traditional ways—this is key—a perimeter approach, or a log capture approach no longer secures you. Now, they gain access to low-profile assets and start to gather intelligence about more critical systems through lateral movement, then they go for more valuable information.
JEFF: Can you explain the example on the slide?
SNHEAL: Sure, let’s say you have tagged your CEO as a critical person, and you just see that they logged in in Tokyo and then in Sydney Australia two hours later. That is clearly an impossible travel event, yet his log-in was valid. Then you see him using commands to access an application, say SSL to access data on a SQL server.
JEFF: Why would the CEO be using SSL and why would he be looking for SQL data? Something is very suspicious and different than his normal behavior, but all three actions are still valid based on everything we can establish from the existing tools and data—right?
SNHEAL: Exactly Jeff, to summarize what UEBA really needs is a way to bring all your tools and feeds together, and process it with AI to help find patterns, and purpose-built to find the RIGHT data. We call this Open-—XDR –extended detection and response with the ability to integrate with any system, tool or data feed. Just as we augmented firewalls with SIEMs, it is time to reconsider how we build a SOC. A collection of tools – or — an intelligent platform is the key.
JEFF: So the way I hear this is, it’s about user behavior with broad visibility, that seems to be a great way to uncover a hack?
SNEHAL: That’s exactly right Jeff.
JEFF: Thanks Snehal, can we take a deeper look into Stellar Cyber’s Open XDR platform? Specifically show us how you can identify a critical asset and see if its infected?
SNEHAL: Sure Jeff, First, I just identified an infected server, it has been hacked. Our UEBA capability helped identify the infection. I will block the device from sending traffic. I used our Threat Hunting library to trigger a response, to close the port. Now, let’s finish this use case with the final step, by seeing if the server is now infecting other devices, like we first discussed, this is a common way hackers infect other devices in your environment by having lateral movement. See, many other devices now need attention.
JEFF: Thanks Snehal, I am convinced I can see you really did a lot and that was simple and really only took a few minutes.
JEFF: The last topic I would like to cover is Compliance. A lot of our clients need to pass compliance and governance initiatives annually or even more frequently. How does your platform support reporting?
SNEHAL: Great point Jeff we have put a lot of capabilities into our reporting engine as you can see here. We have many pre built templates, for example, PCI compliance, CIS compliance and HIPAA compliance
JEFF: Can you easily build customer reports?
SNEHAL: Sure Jeff we can build a customer report from any dashboard we have in the platform, here you can see I have all user login failures from the Threat Hunting Library. I can very easily edit the dashboard and create a customer report from it
JEFF: Snehal, I think we need to wrap this up, can you summarize our discussion today?
SNEHAL: Sure Jeff, I think the most important thing I can say is visibility is the key to success in security. You can’t manage what you can’t see – and that means across your entire attack surface – cloud, endpoint, network and user – and as we both highlighted today, user and entity behavior is strategic to ensuring you can see complex attacks. Stellar Cyber’s advantage is we can bring new insights to tools and telemetry you already trust, it’s cloud native and open API driven. For cybersecurity governance, risk and compliance — UEBA ensures you close blind spots that logs alone will let through.
JEFF: Thanks Snehal, I think this session helped clients see they can easily track critical assets and users across cloud, endpoints, and network — helping to simplify governance, risk and compliance reporting –..till next time
To conclude, for transforming Cybersecurity to a centralized & intelligent platform that is able to under the baseline, undercover blindspots, compliment & integrate all the tools available and filter, normalize & correlate events & incidents into critical alerts for detection & response actions.
It is continuous journey!
Thank you very much.

NZ South Island Trip - the substance (part 1)
I consider my self lucky to had a chance visited an amazing country even only part of it.  Following up the previous post, this time I will reveal the route and main points we took when my husband and I wandered NZ South Island. After roamed for 15 days in South Island, I must admit that 2 weeks is not enough! haha (I must say that you are crazy if NZ does not mesmerize you!). I agree with some travelers who told that 1 month is an ideal period to enjoy South Island only. Anyway, if you only have limited time like us, hopefully the below may help you:
Day 1: Wellington - Christchurch
Actually we were not intend to land on Wellington as our focus was South Island only. However, the universe said otherwise. Our Qantas flight from Sydney failed to land on Christchurch due to foggy weather and they finally decided to land on the nearest international airport in Wellington. Luckily, all hotel and taxi cost during in Wellie and connecting flight are borne by Qantas.
We had morning flight from Wellie to Christchurch, so we arrived in Christchurch around 11h00 morning.
Tumblr media
Finally we landed on cloudy and rainy Christchurch. It was so frosty and I never imagined before that fall on NZ was much way colder than what we felt in Sydney. Waiting for our campervan company to pick up was like a challenge.
Tumblr media
We arrived in Wilderness base around midday. We thought that pick up our campervan would only spare around 1 hour and after that we might directly head to Tekapo. I tell you, that’s totally wrong. There are a lot of details in the campervan which shall be learned such as water management, all control panels, temperature, gas management, insurances, emergency and all other stuff that we realized are essence for our trip. Riding a campervan is also a challenge in the beginning. you will need good cooperation with your partner and ‘tukang parkir’ skill is an absolute thing you need to have :) In total, we spent 3 hours in Wilderness Base. Thereafter (and in a hurry), we headed to the nearest supermarket, Countdown, for groceries stock. As the dark has came, we decided to camp in a holiday park in Christchurch.
Campground: Christchurch Top 10 Holiday Park (48 NZD per van)
Day 2: Christchurch - Tekapo
After never ending rain on the first day, finally the sun was no longer shy in this town. and finally we could see that our holiday park was actually quite comfy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since the first day we had a little problem with our heater (it would not release the heat when we used propane only without plug in the power), prior to go to Tekapo, we back to Wilderness base in the morning to ensure that our heater would no longer rise a problem. Thereafter, we headed to Tekapo thorugh Inland Scenic Route. Even though this route will take you almost 4 hours (include so many stops :p) I promise you this is one of beautiful routes we ever took. along the road, you will be accompanied by the snow capped mountain, thousand sheep, beautiful green landscape, and clear water river. do not hesitate to stop to take a picture or just take a break, hey this is one of the perks of having campervan trip in NZ.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
between Christchurch and Tekapo
After three time stops (hahaha) we arrived in Lake Tekapo and Church of Good Shepherd after midday. Please ensure to put this place in your NZ itinerary as obviously you will not regret to linger in this spot. my camera definitely could not capture the beauty of this place to the fullest. yes, the best lenses are our own eyes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you have more time here, actually there are lot of attractions to be visited, including the hot springs and observatory. unfortunately we did not have a chance to enjoy such places. almost 5 pm when the sun went down in NZ’s fall and we quite disappointed that the free campground recommended by Wildernesst camping guide book was closed. however, we saw another campervan has parked there. following such example, we forced to camp there as the spot was hard to resist. yet, because the failure of ‘ground test’ of mine (and maybe because the universe upset that we did not follow the rule), our van stuck in the mud and could not go elsewhere during the night until the towing car towed the van in the next morning. I must warned you, there is no  free campground in Tekapo, please choose other campground even if you have to pay, the one that suggested by Wildernest is no longer accommodating. the towing care costed us 175 NZD :( yet, overnight stay in Tekapo is a must. this place offers the best night sky ever.
Tumblr media
Campground: Lake Tekapo Shoreline Freedom Campsite (Free, yet no longer allowed)
Day 3: Tekapo - Oamaru (via Pukaki,  Twizel, and Lake Aviemore)
Actually we expected that we can reach The Caitlins by the end of 3rd day, however due to accumulation of sudden landed in Wellie, a long time in Wilderness base, and a trouble we had in Tekapo, Oamaru was the least feasible destination to call it the day. After completed payment in Tekapo Auto Service, we headed to Lake Pukaki to have a lunch there. The third day was only filled with driving and another grocery shopping in Twizel.  We also took a break in Lake Aviemore to enjoy some delicious hot beef pie that we bought in Twizel.
could not be missed: bring water filter bottle and fill the bottle with the water from every single clear lake you visit!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Campground: Oamaru Harbour Tourist Park (39 NZD per van)
Day 4: Oamaru - The Caitlins (via Hampsden, Dunedin, Milton)
Oamaru is a beautiful small harbor town in the east cost, with full of steep streets and the old victorian precinct. I wish I could explore more this town, however we planned to spend the day in Moeraki Boulders and Dunedin. yet, prior headed to Moeraki Boulders, we had a chance to biking around the harbour until we reached Blue Penguin Colony.

After check out from the holiday park, we headed to Moeraki Boulders to reduce my curiosity about spherical rocks scattered on the Moeraki beach. apparently, Moeraki Boulders maybe more beautiful to be visited on sunset time, if you visit on the time and weather like us, really, there’s nothing special.
In Dunedin, we spent the day on eating fish and chips, visited Olveston Historic Home, Dunedin Railway Station, and climbed the Baldwin Street, yes that the most steepest street in world! even though the rain and strong wind threatened us, yet it was fun to be able stand on the top of the street :p
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
we ended the day on the Fortrose Cliff, The Caitlins. it was magnificent cliff with awesome starry night sky, yet with the strongest wind we’ve ever gone through. our tripod even almost got off the ground.

Campground: Fortrose Cliff (free)
Day 5: The Caitlins - Te Anau (via Invercargil)
We left Fortrose without even took a bath as we run out of all waters haha. Hence, our first goal in that morning was only reach out the nearest dump site and freshwater refilling facility. Thanks God, we found that facility in Winton, 1 hour town from Fortrose. As we thought that it would be nice to spend the day only in campground, we directly headed to our next campground between Te Anau and Milford Sound. However, NZ never fail to surprises us, apparently Te Anau-Milford Sound Highway was another beautiful route we took. We even stopped 2 times there.
could not be missed: Eglinton Valley, yes you must stop there!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
after amazed by Eglinton Valley and how it was formed, we rode our van to next campsite. Again, it was another gem we found in this country. clear water river, snow capped mountain, and maybe the most silent place we’ve ever stayed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
please note that there is no signal and facility in this campsite, as such please make sure that you have essentials you’ll need. temperature in this place could be minus C degree in the night. unluckily, our main propane was empty on such night, and automatically the heater stopped. it was a struggle for us to go outside in the middle of the night, crashing an icy weather with no light (other than flashlight app in the cell phone) to switch the big propane with the little one haha. and don’t be surprised that in the morning you’ll get a layer of ice on the ground.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Campground: Deer Flat DOC Campsite (13 NZD pp (yet we failed to locate the payment box :( so, it’s free)
to be continued...

9 amazing reasons to visit Bright, Australia (besides its name)
Australia tops the bucket list of many, and as someone who has been down under many a time, I’ve yet to tick off some of the most iconic spots like the Sydney Opera House, the trendy city of Melbourne or Uluru.
Personally, I love to get off the beaten track, and when the chance came to explore Victoria’s High Country, I jumped as high as I could.
Victoria is one of the states in Australia, home to Melbourne, but once you get out of the big city, you’re in for a real treat.
A lovely mountain town set in the foothills of the Victorian Alps, Bright is the perfect base for exploring Mt. Buffalo and the surrounding Alpine national parks.
It is also the base for visiting Mt. Hotham in winter to ski. While I have yet to visit Victoria in the snowy season, I can heartily attest to the fact that this place is just
Wineries, good foodie spots, friendly locals galore, beautiful views and epic adventures, Bright and the surrounding area really does have it all!
25 photos that will inspire you to visit the Victoria High Country
1. Sunset at The Horn, Mount Buffalo
It seems fitting to begin with the first of several all-time favorite places in Bright (yes, I have more than one, I’m allowed!) The Horn, at Mount Buffalo.
This spectacular lookout is what dreams are made of. With truly breathtaking views you’ll feel (quite literally ) on top of the world. While you can drive most of the way, to reach the lookout you’ll have to don your hiking boots for a short steep hike from the final picnic area to get to the top.
If you had to pick a time of day, chose sunset!
Showcasing sweeping panoramas of Mt Hotham, Mt Buller, Mount Featherton and the valleys beyond, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in Europe, or even the wilds of China!
At 1,723 meters elevation (or just over 500 ft) The Horn is the highest point in the Mount Buffalo National Park and a definite ‘must do’ when you’re in the area.
As the rolling mountains disappear into the distance, you really feel like you’re on top of the world here.
2. Dip your toes at Ladies Bath Falls
There’s just something about standing under a waterfall in the heat of the day, surrounded by birdsong and native forest. Am I right?
The ultimate bathing spot, Ladies Bath Falls are practically an institution round here.
As the story goes, in the late 1940’s the trains from Melbourne would stop so the ladies on board could ‘refresh’ themselves in the falls before the final leg of the journey to Mount Buffalo. I can heartily attest that that water is, indeed, fresh. It’s freaking cold!
Set just 400 meters back from the road up Mount Buffalo, these crystal clear springs trickle over smooth granite boulders and make for a tranquil detour.
Be warned though, the water is icy! Not shown in pic: My very numb feet.
3. Get nice and cozy at the Kilnhouses
My accommodation near Bright was extraordinary. The Kilnhouses are a unique experience where contemporary luxury and design is combined with the stunning beauty of the high country landscape on a cattle farm.
And I’m not really a ‘cow’ kind of girl, usually preferring sheep farms, but after this – I think I’m converted.
I stayed in the Sorting Shed which was designed to mirror the old style of tobacco sorting sheds, with amazing views of the farms and mountains around it.
Let me ask you something. When I say ‘Australia’ you picture beaches and kangaroos right? Me too. Well, I used to.
Now, when I think of Australia, my mind often wanders back to The Kilnhouses.
Rolling green fields as far as the eye can see, edged with gumtree forests and snowy mountain peaks. Morning mists, and the sounds of a working farm right outside my seriously luxurious room. Can I hide here forever?
4. Be welcomed by the friendly locals
Down to earth, generous and some of the most welcoming people I’ve ever met, the locals in Bright are a huge part of what what make this place so special. From the baristas who made my daily coffees to the people I met on the trails, I left Bright with such a sense of joy for my fellow humans.
Here I felt safe and happy.
Which is actually saying a lot considering I’m the biggest introvert out there.
5. Tuck in for a big feed at the Wandi pub
Now getting to one of the more important points – the food. Which, by the way, was exceptional. Topping my list is the Wandi Pub.
Yes, guys, a pub.
The perfect mix between down-to-earth watering hole and inner city gastro-chic, the Wandi delivers in every regard. The portions are big, the garden is delightful and the decor is en pointe (although seriously, what do I know about pub decor?)
I don’t know what I was expecting when I parked outside the Wandi pub, and I could see heaps of local utes and farm vehicles. Expecting a rural farm kind of pub like we have in New Zealand, you know, with antlers on the wall, a big pool table and a lot of men in plaid and short shorts.
I wasn’t disappointed, except I wasn’t prepared for the incredible beer on tap and the delicious and fresh menu inspired by owner’s Tim and Paddy’s travels.
If I could have ordered everything on the menu, I would. However, I’m unashamedly all about ordering food that looks good on camera (not a curry then) and I went with the Zaartar cauliflower and omg guys it was amazing.
6. Go for a wander at sunrise at the Mount Beauty Gorge Walk
If you’re after an easy hike that really delivers on epic terrain – this one’s for you. Roughly six kilometers of sheer granite cliffs, cool green canopy and clear waters, the Mount Beauty Gorge Walk takes you through the heart of a natural canyon.
Starting out you’ll traverse the Kiewa River via swingbridge, before the track descends into the belly of the gorge. Be sure to pack a pair of shoes you don’t mind get wet for wading – there are several river crossings on this hike.
There’s also a fair bit of boulder hopping! And also it’s Australia, so snakes!
As you continue on, the sun is filtered through the trees, creating the most beautiful light. I’ve been on a lot of hikes, but I was really struck by how magical this place felt.
The further you go, the sides gradually get steeper, and you’ll come across a series of natural pools, perfect for taking a dip along the way! I recommend taking a picnic to enjoy on the rocks post-swim – Everything tastes better with the sun on your face!
7. Enjoy all the colors
If there was ever a town to embody the essence of landscape diversity, it would be Bright. As happy as its name suggests, I can’t help but make my number seven point all about the color palette.
The soft pastels of dawn give way to a vibrant orange sunrise, which transforms the landscape into a patchwork of greens and browns.
The constant dust in the air mean that during sunset, the horizon is painted every shade of purple and yellow.
Everything is sharp here, bolder and brighter, pun intended.
The vineyards, mountains, red dirt roads, bare rock and lush undergrowth all meld seamlessly, creating a truly wonderful snapshot of Australia at its finest.
It’s also not unlike my hometown of Wanaka, so possibly that explains my affinity with the land.
I know that it’s probably glorious come autumn when the leaves begin to change.
8. Take in a sunrise at  Tawonga Gap
Ok, this one was a happy coincidence I stumbled upon while driving one day and knew it’d be a great spot for sunrise.
Halfway between the towns of Mt Beauty and Bright, on the Tawonga Gap Road is a secluded little lookout with the most sensational views over the surrounding mountains.
It’s extra special because most of the drive you’re shrouded in forest, so when you reach this tiny clearing it makes the panorama seem all the more remarkable.
Native bush turns to lush farmland, turns to mountains and endless skies. I managed to catch the sun as it first appeared, but whichever time of day you choose, the Tawonga Gap is an ideal spot to stretch your legs and get a dose of vitamin N. Plug in into maps on your phone and you’ll find it.
9. Explore as much of Buffalo National Park as you can!
A natural paradise of walking tracks, waterfalls, wildflowers and wildlife – Mount Buffalo National Park is another essential addition to the ‘must see’ list.
Regardless of your fitness levels, this vast park has something for every hiker.
Tracks range from short 45 minute strolls to steeper six hour treks. Interesting granite formations dominate the craggy peaks, and its endless gum forests provide shelter for the wildlife. If you’re lucky you may spot a kangaroo or two, wallabies, possums and variety of native birds and wombats. Yes, I said wombats.
I repeat, WOMBATS.
Contained within the park is an old chalet, built in 1910. Surrounded by beautiful gardens it has sweeping views of the landscape and adds a touch of charm.
Camping is allowed, and there are a range of campsites both with basic facilities and others more remote. Oh, and there’s a lake! In the warmer months you can swim or kayak – or simply just relax with book on the water’s edge.
From wombats to wineries, mountains to waterfalls, Bright is a real gem and definitely worth checking out on your next trip to Australia. You won’t regret it.
Have you ever been to Victoria or heard of Bright? Is this the kind of place that appeals? Have anything else to add? Spill!
The Feast High Country Festival coming up from May 3rd to May 19th, 2019 and is an amazing time to explore, eat and drink around the Victoria High Country
Many thanks for Tourism North East for hosting me in Australia – like always I’m keeping it real – all opinions are my own, like you could expect less from me!

Best places to travel in January
Looking for the Best Places to travel in January? The month of January is usually tough, with the holidays being over, the days being shorter and the whole buzz that comes with the New Year slowly dying down. The best way to overcome all this is, to extend the excitement and have a couple more vacation days. January provides quite a number of different festivals ranging on things from fishing to food to even burning a Viking galley down. The list below contains some of the best places to visit in January:
Venice, Italy
The city of water is one of the world’s most visited cities. It exuded a romantic charm that other cities can only hope to have. However, thanks to its appeal numerous tourists have come back from Venice complaining about the crowded streets and alleyways. This is most times an issue, but not in January.
In January, the alleyways aren’t filled with people, making your pictures of this picturesque city even more enchanting. The cooler temperatures and smaller tourist populations make Venice one of the best places to travel in January. The month’s end sees the Venice Carnival begin. This carnival is uniquely Venetian as the canals transform into a starting point for 2 boat parades. One is a well-lit floating stage-show flowing on the Rio Di Cannaregio.
This takes place on the 27th of January. The other is called the Festa Veneziana, which is a traditional feast and boat parade. The sweet aroma of street food takes over the city. This celebration continues till February. However, the initial 2 days are events that shouldn’t be missed.
Best places to visit in January
Costa Rica Costa Rica is one of the few countries in the world that can combine pristine beaches, luxurious tropical jungles, and abundant wildlife to serve a thriving adventure and eco-tourism scene. The nation portrays itself as a natural wonderland, and visitors are bound to become adept at locating toucans in the cloud forest of Monteverde. Or is it lounging in a hammock with a soundtrack of capuchin calls in the background.
The best times to visit Costa Rica are the dry and mild early months of January and February. However, it is imperative to note that these months are peak season for travel, so it is best to book ahead of time. The scenery of Costa Rica makes it one of the best places to travel in January.
Melbourne, Australia While Sydney might come to everyone’s mind first when Australia is mentioned, subdued Melbourne is a tourist’s delight. The weather there is much more pleasant during the summer months that in New South Wales. Tourists have numerous events to enjoy, like the Australian Open for tennis lovers.
Architecture and wine enthusiasts can treat themselves to the Point Leo Estate located on Mornington Peninsula. This estate, owned by the Gandels has been opened to the public, to showcase its previously private working farm and private vineyard. There is also an amazing collection of outdoor sculptures with works from Jaume Plensa and Tony Cragg present. The draw of the Peninsula doesn’t end there as nights can be spent at the Jackalope Hotel, an extravagant resort filled with art. All this makes Melbourne one of the best places to visit in January.
Where to go on holiday in January
Tanzania The country of Tanzania seems like an unlikely place to visit in January, as January is the drier of 2 extremely wet months; December and February. This means there is an increased probability of rain. However, the rains bring fertile plains, with the Serengeti in particular. The south of the plain sees the wildebeest migration and calving season in full swing, with over 8,000 wildebeest being born each day at peak season.
This increase of new life brings predators and January sees the Ngoro Ngoro Crater and the Serengeti come to life. These two places are home to the biggest concentration of hyenas, cheetahs, and lions in all of Africa. Visitors can watch predators stalking their prey, watching it, waiting for the right time to pounce. This is one of the best times to see a predator in action, with no crowds of tourists getting in the way. That is why Tanzania is one of the best places to visit in January.
Best holiday destinations in January
Maui, Hawaii There is no such thing as a bad time to head to Maui, Hawaii. That being said, Maui is one of the best places to travel in January, as the crowds associated with the holidays have dispersed. This leaves the island’s beaches, like Makena open to fewer tourist, strolling its pink colored sands in relative peace.
Flights to the Aloha state have been getting cheaper every year, so Maui is a great destination for those looking for cheap places to travel in January. Maui offers a PGA Sentry Tournament of Champions event at the beginning of the year, which is sure to entice golf fans. This event coupled with the mountain and oceanic scenery that the Lahaina Plantation Course offers, it is bound to be worth it.
Quebec City, Canada Canadian festivals are ones that have to be experienced at least once in a lifetime. Quebec City offers a cold-weather locale, teeming with winding streets full of charm. The city when covered in snow, appears like a fairytale and is the closest thing to being in France without actually going there.
The city offers simply more than the atmosphere, as its inhabitants Québécois are adept at avoiding the winter blues, creating fun in the city. January 26th till February 11th sees the yearly Carnaval de Quebec commandeer the streets, sort of like a winter Mardi Gras. It is difficult even to notice the cold, once you get into the festivities the carnival brings. Some of the things to do include ax throwing, or rolling an ice sheet inside a massive blowup bowling ball to tip a couple of blowup bowling pins over. St Lawrence Street in Montreal offers Igloo Fest, which is a festival dating back 375 years. It takes place at Montreal’s Old Port, and it includes live music starting from January 18th till February 3rd. The festival includes performances from Digwee, Sasha and Oliver Heldens, as well as offering live outdoor viewings of Slapshot.
 where to travel in january
Panama It has never been easier to get to this Central American country from the United States, thanks to a Copa Airlines route. The route connects Panama City to Denver Colorado, which makes traveling in January, which is the country’s dry season easier. January is a great time to hike up to Volcan Baru, which is the highest point in the country.
If Volcan Baru is not for you, since it has an elevation of over 11,000 feet, the coast is a great place to surf. This region has earned a deserved reputation for large swells, particularly near the north in Bocas Del Toro. There are numerous surf schools for beginners to learn the ropes at Black Rock Point. While those who want a challenge can go to Silverbacks to take on the surfs of professionals. Panama City offers accommodation options which serve all budgets and has expanded in recent times, thanks to 2 new luxurious hotels.
Panama is also a pretty safe country, here is a blog post that answers the questions is Panama safe?
Laos Laos is the nation of a million and flowing milky-blue colored waterfalls, smiling Buddhist monks, shining temples and attractive colonial towns. The country offers one of Southeast Asia’s most breathtaking scenery, with the atmosphere and pace of life slower than the hustle and bustle of its neighbors (Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam). Its sleepy capital, Vientiane, the activity-friendly and breathtaking scenery of Van Vieng, coupled with Luang Prabang’s Heritage Listed colonial beauty is sure to be an amazing experience for visitors of Laos.
Laos is one of the best places to visit in January because the average temperature is around 24C which is quite pleasant. The 4000 or so islands located in the south can see temperatures that reach the high 30s C. Tourists who wish to visit at the month’s end can witness the inhabitants celebrate the Wat Phou Festival. The festival is also known as Makhaboucha and is celebrated at the Wat Phou ruins. Celebrations consist of candle lightings, religious chanting, and presentations of Lao culture and music. The festival usually lasts three days and begins towards the end of the month.
Places to visit in January
Ethiopia Ethiopia is one of the best places to visit in January, as its dry season runs between October and June. The skies are generally dry and clear, with mild temperatures all around, the perfect weather for hiking into the highlands. It is imperative to pack a hardy down jacket and some thermals to combat the cold if you want to trek into the highlands. Whilst January is just at the end of the cooler weather season; it can be worth taking a trip to the cradle of civilization for the yearly Timket Festival. This 3-day Christian festival celebrates the baptism made by John the Baptist in the Jordan River on Jesus Christ. The Ark of Covenant replicas is brought to the rivers to be baptized in a procession escorted by a multitude of locals.
These locals are dressed in the traditional white garments and priests hold sequined velvet umbrellas. The air and atmosphere are filled with a mix of celebration, prayer, and incense, to create a once in a lifetime adventure.
Vietnam Vietnam, just like the majority of Southeast Asia, enjoys a dry winter season that carries on into the New Year. This weather is great for exploring without adventurers getting dehydrated and sweaty. Tourists who head to Vietnam for sand and sun can enjoy Nha Trang or Hoi An.
Those searching for a more relaxing or gentle pace will enjoy slowly drifting along the Mekong Delta. The Mekong Delta is also known as the Rice Bowl of Vietnam, thanks to its abundance of flower, fruit orchards, and rice paddies. The Delta offers a realistic glimpse into the daily life of agricultural Vietnamese. Vietnam is also a great place to visit, thanks to its gastronomic offerings, ranging from street food to gourmet cuisine. Indulge in dishes from photo banh xeo, all offering the most fragrant and freshest cuisine available in the world.
Park City, Utah Sundance is the brainchild of Robert Redford, and has over 30 years brought an eclectic avenue for star spotting. Stars like Peter Dinklage to Jay Z and Shirley MacLaine have been spotted at the festival. The festival lasts for 10 days and draws a host of people with love for indie cinema, its stars and the megastars that love cinema.
Visitors can also expect an excess of ski bunnies as well, who have been drawn to witness the training sessions of winter athletes preparing for their competitions. Accommodation is also available thanks to the newly refurbished Grand Summit Hotel, which after a $15 million renovation, looks even more stunning than ever.
