I look back home, as every soldier does, and then when the others look back to their respective sweethearts — I don’t. I see you. I don’t want to dash and throw myself at your feet and say ‘Vivien, I love you’ or anything: I just want to see you and know that beauty, real active living beauty is still in the world. And all I want to do now, is tell you that you are one of my loveliest memories: One day I’ll marry and love someone, perhaps with dark hair and light expressive eyes, but I promise you now that you’ll still hold a place in my memory box. - James Kennaway, soldier in the British Army, in a fan letter to Vivien Leigh, 1946

There’s a line in one of my favorite movies, That Hamilton Woman. Vivien Leigh as Lady Hamilton says to Laurence Olivier as Horatio Nelson, “why do we always meet, just to say goodbye?” It really echoes the relationship she had with Laurence Olivier. In their early relationship they had brief moments together before saying goodbye, and in each other’s absences that’s when they’re desire always grew stronger. They were so mad for one another. they were so right and so wrong. I can’t look away

I'm watching That Hamilton Woman, a 1941 Alexander Korda film starring Laurence Olivier and Vivian Leigh both because it's been on my list for a while as a movie about Nelson, and because I really wanted to watch a Vivian Leigh film.
Anyway, you know that moment where you realize you are most certainly watching a film that was made at A Moment where they're talking about something and they're definitely talking about something else?
Here's Sir William discussing Hitler Napoleon's invasion circa 1939 1793.
But why should England fight? Because all through these centuries, she has built up a commonwealth, in which every little spot has its purpose and value to the balance line of life. And there are always men, who for the sake of their insane ambition, want to destroy what other people build. And therefore, this tiny little bit, as you call it, Emma, has to send out its ships again and again to fight those who want to dictate their will to others.
Sure. We're definitely talking about Napoleon. In 1941. Mmmhmm.
