I've seen a few posts concerning this, so I wanted to add my two cents about Ed consenting to sex but not actually being ready for it.
The claim I see floating around is that Ed is doing this for Stede, because Stede needs the physical and emotional comfort, which I think overlooks Ed's own need for comfort, his faith in his relationship with Stede, and his personal autonomy.
We see in the torture scene how Ed wants to protect Stede and is unable to, to the point that he says he's going to kill Low for burning Stede with the poker. We see how he tries to warn Stede about the poison attached to committing murder. His arrival at Stede’s door is indeed about offering love and comfort, but not just for Stede. When Ed grabs Stede at the wall, that’s not just comforting Stede—that’s comforting Ed. It’s Ed grabbing him and holding him. Losing Stede always sends Ed into a panic, and he did indeed nearly lose him again.
The undercurrent of the “he’s doing this for Stede” claim is that Ed in some way pities Stede or that he’s being self-sacrificial—that he’s doing what Stede wants, not what he wants. And this in itself would be a violation of consent—Ed only goes to bed with him because Stede want/needs him to, and Ed in some way feels that he deserves it. This both removes Ed’s autonomy and argues that Ed pities Stede in some way—two things that just aren’t supported by their characterizations.
We never see Ed being condescending with Stede, even when he’s explaining how to be a pirate or how to fight. We never see him humoring Stede about what he wants—including in the treasure hunt, where he complains until Lucius tells him to stop being a dick, and then earnestly enjoys himself the rest of the time. Ed does not lie to Stede about anything; he even goes so far as to confess the attempted murder. It seems grossly unfair to therefore assume that Ed would take a step of such importance in their relationship because “well, Stede needs it.”
Ed’s own autonomy is important as well. He’s been comfortable asking for Stede to slow down. In Season 1, he’s clear about his physical and emotional boundaries and Stede does not cross them. For him to suddenly decide that his autonomy is unimportant when it comes to Stede would, again, be out of character in a way that cannot be explained by the situation. They’ve developed a mutually respectful relationship and Ed himself wouldn’t violate that, any more than Stede would.
Note that Ed can say he wants to take it slow and then decide he doesn't want that anymore. He's allowed to change his mind, as he appears to, and overlaying an interpretation that he doesn't actually change his mind, when there's no textual evidence, again questions his autonomy and right to make choices. He's not apparently second-guessing the morning after either—not until other issues come up and Ed starts getting scared again.
I’ve talked about the “last night was a mistake” line before so I’m not going to repeat that, but I will again note that there’s zero indication that Ed thinks it was a mistake UNTIL he sees Stede increasingly enjoying his fame—something which neither of them predicted. Ed seems to have found the sex so physically and emotionally satisfying that he finally discards his leathers and talks to Stede about how he wants them avoid near death situations.
Them not being quite on the same page in what they want professionally is not the same as them not being on the same page emotionally or Ed regretting sex. I've no idea why there should be any assumption that Ed pities Stede or offers up his body in exchange for Stede's comfort. That would violate their relationship and their trust in each other. The desire is mutual, the consent is mutual, the respect is mutual.
Watsonian vs Doylist Analyses - A Couple Points of Clarification
I just want to clear up a couple of misunderstandings I may have unintentionally contributed to in my previous references on the subject:
1. There can be multiple explanations (multiple Watsonian explanations, multiple Doylist explanations, multiple of each etc) of a given scene or character portrayal or plot point, and people can accept more than one explanation at the same time. It's just uncommon for people to accept or present multiple explanations at once because that's kind of how people people.
2. Doylist takes aren't inherently "better" than Watsonian takes, and vice versa. People use both to engage with the text in different ways and for different purposes. Watsonian logic is fun for roleplay or immersing yourself into the story, and I imagine a lot of fanfic writers often start from a prompt like "I wonder what would happen next if I took x character and then put them in y scenario". Doylist logic is fun if you like examining the text from a more "meta" standpoint, trying to see what purpose various narrative choices serve (or undermine). Neither angle is intrinsically a more valid way to engage with fiction, and you might enjoy doing one thing one day and another thing the next - with different texts or even with the same text.
In litcrit, because I like to pick my brain on the subject of "what would have made for the best story here", I tend to be more interested in analyzing theme, character arcs, setup and payoff etc, which are Doylist interpretations. Some people focus a lot on authorial intent, which is also a Doylist perspective (just a different one). Some people like to try to get into the heads of the characters they're analyzing and discuss ideas like "what choice would make the most sense for x character given who they are as a person". That's a Watsonian take. There are contextual and individual reasons why some explanations may resonate with you more than others some of the time or even most of the time, but they're really apples and oranges. Which one you prefer will likely vary depending on the type of question being posed and what scope seems to be the most appropriate for it - and people are always going to have different opinions about that too... because that's how people people.
Of course, the opinions I personally care enough about to splash all over the internet are going to be opinions I hold with very strong convictions, which is why I can come off quite aggressive about them, but they're still just opinions and there's no such thing as "one true explanation", whether that's Watsonian or Doylist. If I make a Doylist argument and I dismiss someone else's rebuttal on the basis of it being Watsonian, that's not because Watsonian takes are intrinsically weaker, it's just because you generally can't use a Watsonian take to rebut a Doylist one or vice versa. You need to engage with someone's point in order to counter it, and you can't generally do that when you completely change the scope of the question, which is what tends to happen when a Watsonian perspective and a Doylist perspective comes into conflict.
(Of course, you can argue that a Doylist scope is situationally stronger than a Watsonian one or vice versa, but that's a different argument and usually context-dependent lol - point is just because a Doylist answer might fit one particular prompt much better this time, doesn't mean all Doylist answers will always trump all Watsonian answers in every single context all of the time, and that's not even accounting for the fact that you're never going to reach unanimous agreement about these sorts of things anyway.)
i of course HAVE to ask for number 6 on the ask game with mcqueen and anyone else you think would be fun to answer for. i would also love to ask 1 and 5!
~zale (@zaletham)
Thank you so very much Zale!!! Didn't realize how lengthy I was gonna talk about this here in the post and in the tags, but it was very nice to get out my system!! 😊
I'm actually so excited that you asked number 6 for M.cQueen, it hadn't even crossed my mind at first, and technically isn't zoo or aquarium, moreso museum, but I think that still qualifies- but! L.ightning actually loovesss dinosaurs! I don't know if you've ever heard of C.ars On The Road, it's like this little series that came out in 2023, each episode is about 5 minutes long(they say like 7 minutes but it's just 2+ minutes of credits, no extra credit scenes except for a 5 second one in one episode) and L.ightning and M.ater, to make a long story short, go on a roadtrip together and they go on stops along the way and the first stop they go to is like a dinosaur museum!
And L.ightning like full swing goes into hyperfixation mode and just babbles about dinosaurs and I love it. He says he did "hours of intensive research" and it just cuts to him watching documentaries in M.ack's trailer and it makes me giggle. M.ack is so sweet, I can only imagine how much second-hand dino knowledge he has cause of L.ightning or overhearing his documentaries! There's also been some jokes that what if the main reason L.ightning wanted to be D.inoco's team in the first movie is just cause he likes dinosaurs and I love it.
I explain a bit more in the tags but tumblr has a one video limit per post that I didn't know about?? So I'm just doing one of the clips here!
They're so silly I love it.
But basically to make a long story short! L.ightning has a massive hyperfixation on dinosaur stuff and would thrive in a dinosaur related musuem. Though, I'd imagine he'd be bored in an aquarium or zoo until he realized that he could make connections here, and he'd go around to all the bird-type species or sharks and talk about how they're related to dinosaurs or have dinosaur ancestors and such!
1) what does their alarm ringtone sound like
It took me some pondering at first who to answer this for and then an idea immediately hit me, and I'd figure I'd answer this for F.rancesco
Basically, to put it in a nutshell, F.1 is a bunch of international racers on international race courses, and whoever wins at the end of each race gets their national anthem played! And I'm giggling over the thought of F.rancesco setting his alarm that he wakes up to in the morning to ltaly's national anthem.
Ringtone wise though, he'd definitely set it to a specific song, or something someone would ask questions about so he could go on this entire spiel about how it relates to him or something he likes. I'd probably rub off on him at some point and he'd make his ringtone(or the ringtone specifically for when I call) S.mooth Operator by Sade.
5) how do they bookmark their book pages
I'll answer this one for F.inn, just cause I think he's the one that's mostly likely to read full books fairly frequently. He'd probably just have a simple bookmark. something small and fairly thin cause he likes taking care of his books and wouldn't want to bend any pages or mess up the spine of the book too badly, probably something like this:
Maybe not the particular design that's on it, but definitely just the rectangle with the little tassels on it. I wouldn't be surprised if he had a bookmark with the UK flag on it as a design, he's quite patriotic and I think it's adorable. Though due to my recent knitting escapades he'd 100% ask me to knit one like one of these:
Though this has also given me the brilliant enlightenment idea of F.inn having one of those book lights or book lamps that clamp onto the book and shines a light on it and you can kinda adjust it and l'1l be having brainrot over that for a bit. May or may not have cultivated a fic idea around it already.
Thinking a lot about pro heroes who became pros after All Might's debut but then had to witness his final fight and adjust amidst the fall out of that. 'Uh oh! The defining pillar of your life, career, and society is gone' kind of thoughts
Okay did make it to work and everything is uncomfortably chill??? Like I expected people to be parked out in our parking lot since it’s kind of a free for all parking lot in the city
Very behind (on my somewhat made up and imaginary) schedule for writing those autumn fics due to (insert personal reasons here) but hoping things are settling down and we’ll be back in action soon.
sometimes i think back on the plot of t100 and even without the lexa death it’s filled with so much traumatic stuff like................. they really made that show for the mentally ill because we ate that up until lexa died
my favourite kingdom hearts characters are the ones who appear in like. one unknown side game and have the most tragic stories. im talking about like.. replica riku (had his own memories replaced against his will and died fighting his 'true' self after learning that he was just a copy meant to carry out a plan. died with his last few few sentences being about how he's scared to die because he doesn't know what awaits replicas after death) and data sora and riku (also created solely to carry out a plan with little thought to the fact they are also sentient people, who essentially die at the end of the game). can i count xion and namine in this? well, i'm going to
