sooooo i may have. spent my day binge watching dungeon meshi and here are my Opinions, having never read the manga ever (very MINOR ANIME SPOILERS ahead! nothing too in-depth but, y'know, for laughs):

laios is my autistic blorbo son boy and i love him and i want him to be happy. go find your sister, dude, but also eat monsters for fun and research reasons. this is the one context where i would say "eat monsters" like... ever

laios is also 1,000 percent a freak for wanting to eat monsters and study them the way he does. absolutely insane man. stop trying to be a martyr, you dumbass, and also stop poisoning yourself. both of these opinions coexist at the same time and i don't know how to feel about it because feelings (and social cues) are difficult

marcille is a lady who is so so SO smart and cool, but has absolutely ZERO street smarts. (babygirl you are JUST like me, except for the whole "being a woman" thing.) she's a "gifted" kid who now has burnout and needs to feel useful or else she feels like a failure constantly kinda girlie. she doesn't want to be abandoned. relatable. i'm concerned at how much i relate to her. stop being so relatable, dammit!!

chilchuck is INCREDIBLY emotionally constipated. lmao. he also has chronic young-forever face, which means he probably gets mistaken for a twelve-to-sixteen-year-old constantly, which... same, dude, same. i've heard (from the manga readers) that he's divorced with several children, but i don't know if that's true. i hope it is. i really want that to be where part of his issues come from. i want more angsty moments with his character. he'll be my new emotional punching bag when i finish all those other unrelated one-shots i'm planning on writing :)

senshi is a sweet man who just wants to feed and protect his new friends. i think food and acts of service are his love languages. he has a really fuckin' strong pot and knife for some reason lmao

i love falin. she's kind of a freak too, but she knows social cues better than her brother from what i can tell. sure hope nothing bad happens to her- oh gods. well, i sure hope nothing ELSE bad happens to her- OH GODS OH FUCK-

Right to Their Faces: Sera's Romance Quest

The Sera Series: Exploring Sera's character and background.

This one was originally going to be part of another post I have in the works, "Sera and the Inquisitor," but I realized that I had a lot to say about Sera's romance quest and it really deserved its own post.

Disclaimer: It is absolutely fine if you don't like Sera or don't like Sera's romance, don't connect with her, don't find her relatable, whatever! I'm not here to tell anyone what they can or can't like. I just want to talk about my read and my feelings on this romance quest. If you don't like Sera and are not open to positively discussing Sera, that's just fine; feel free to scroll right on by, no need to inform me in the notes.

Sera's romance quest, "A Woman Who Wants for Nothing," triggers once the Inquisitor has confirmed her romantic interest in Sera and Sera's approval is high enough. The Inquisitor is prompted to find a gift for Sera because—okay look, we really need to spend a minute on how this quest begins, because it's truly delightful.

When the Inquisitor comes to Sera's alcove, Sera runs up behind her, excited, and exclaims all in a rush, "Listen! I got you a hat, but it's ugly, so I drew Coryhe-whatzit's face on it, and stuffed it with apples. Everyone's hitting it with sticks! I really hope you like it!" and then runs away giggling.

I mean, it's pretty clear here that this is all in fun to Sera. She wanted to give her Inky something, but the hat she found was ugly, so she decided to turn it into a joke and hoped Inky would be entertained by it. It's the Inquisitor, charmingly, who decides to take this super seriously, looking after Sera and saying thoughtfully to herself, "We're giving gifts now?"

The Inquisitor then goes to all her other companions looking for help finding a gift for Sera. Practically no one has any good ideas, or any ideas at all really. I want to pause on that aspect for a moment. Why doesn't anyone (including the Inquisitor, who is actively seeing her) know what Sera would like?

I mean first of all, the clue's kind of in the name of the quest. No one can think of a gift for Sera because Sera doesn't particularly want anything. She is not very concerned with owning things. She doesn't covet fancy clothes or shoes or hats or jewelry. The Undercroft keeps the Inquisition supplied with arms and armor, so she doesn't have need of those things as gifts. She likes books, but she has Skyhold's entire library at her disposal. She likes food, a lot, and she likes cakes, and if pressed I'd say that of all the material gifts she could receive, a cake made just for her would probably go over the best, but I don't think it would be better than what we ultimately get in this quest.

Sera does like collecting various objects, and we find her catalog of these in her journal, "Sera's Cabinet of Wonder Whose It Was," but these are all mundane items: a Circle banner, a goblet, a halla statue, a deck of cards, masks stolen from the Winter Palace. Little curiosities, things she finds meaningful or strange or funny. This is a collection curated purely on Sera's whims, and it could be difficult for even someone close to her to guess what kind of object might catch her fancy in that way.

And here we have the ironic meaning of the quest title. Usually, the expression that a person "wants for nothing" means that they already have everything they could possibly want, but for Sera it takes on a different meaning. Sera "wants for nothing" because she not only lacks a life of wealth and comfort but has actively rejected it and all the baggage that came with it. Someone will probably point out here that Sera is interested in making a profit with her Red Jenny shenanigans, and she is, she says so! but what she is not concerned with is accumulating and hoarding wealth or possessions. That is a life she has very consciously rejected.

I also don't think we should ignore the role of class in the way the other Inner Circle members treat Sera, even the "nicest" ones. There's not really any getting around the fact that other characters—including characters we like—look down on Sera because she's low class. Sera is not the only elf in the Inquisition, and there are definitely characters who treat Solas poorly in various ways, but they do not treat Solas the same way they treat Sera. Sera gets the most abject disrespect both for being an elf and for being low-class, and—this part's important—for looking and sounding low-class, and being proud of it.

Cullen may have been born a commoner but he sought a respectable profession, became a templar and ascended through the ranks (however he may feel about that now) and is now the Inquisition's commander. Leliana may have been the daughter of a servant, but she became a bard and has spent her life hobnobbing with nobles and Very Important People, eventually becoming the Left Hand of the Divine. Blackwall may have been born a commoner but he is (so far as everyone knows) a decorated Warden-Constable. Vivienne may have been born to merchant parents and sent to the Circle at a young age, but she's made the most of her position and become First Enchanter of Montsimmard, then Enchanter to the Imperial Court. You see where I'm going with this. Even our common-born companions have for the most part sought to climb the social hierarchy in one way or another. They've "bettered" themselves. They have titles, if not noble ones. They're Somebody. They're Important. And many of the others are just straight up nobility. Even Varric, who carries himself like a common man, is from a well-connected Merchant Guild family as well as being a famous author; he's basically a noble who enjoys slumming it.

Not only is Sera a nobody, she patently rejects the idea of being Somebody. She operates as a Red Jenny under a mythical name who may or may not ever have been a real person. When placed in a situation where she needs to be formally introduced as Somebody, the ball at the Winter Palace, she openly mocks the entire concept and the supposed solemnity of the occasion by submitting a vulgar joke name.

I bring all of this up because this is why I think the other companions are so unhelpful. They can't imagine what Sera could possibly want because they already know she doesn't want what they want, and even the ones who do like her I think struggle to actually relate to her. They see her motives as, at best, confusing. (As does the Inquisitor in a lot of early dialogue, but that's another post for another day!) But in fact, Sera's desires are very simple. (I think Cole is the one with the best shot at actually figuring out what Sera would want, but he gets hung up on the concept of what a gift is before he can get there.)

Vivienne and Solas in particular are not just confused by Sera but actively offended and dismayed by her existence. I think it's pretty easy to see why she gets under Solas's skin so badly (though I could write reams about how interesting their relationship is and how much it reveals about Solas, but not today). Sera represents to him just how far the elves have fallen because of him, and I think he's both deeply frustrated by her and deep down feels responsible for everything that's "wrong" with her. Vivienne and Sera are also fascinating foils to one another, as both came from humble origins and both were afforded some unique opportunities given those origins—but they've taken polar opposite approaches to the problem of social hierarchy and power. And like so many Dragon Age characters who act as foils to each other, the existence of the other needles at them so badly because they challenge the foundation of their beliefs about the world and their sense of self. So it's no surprise that these two are the companions that give active disapproval when the Inquisitor reveals her relationship with Sera.

(It also makes for some absolutely wonderful humorous irony later if the Inquisitor decides to take Vivienne's clearly-sarcastic suggestion seriously, after which you get a bonus cutscene of Sera and Inky in bed together laughing over whatever it is Inky has shaved into her ladybits. Vivienne turns out to be the only one who had a good idea, and she didn't even mean it!)

The actual quantities of disapproval are frankly negligible, and easily made up elsewhere if you, the player, care deeply what Solas and Vivienne think of your character. If I'm being honest, I think they could have gone even harder with the disapproval, especially in a game like Inquisition which doesn't pull its punches with approval the way the previous games do and doesn't allow you to avoid ever taking a negative hit. But the exact number isn't the important thing here. The important thing is that without some tangible and in-your-face social cost to openly loving Sera, this quest would have no teeth.

I trust I don't have to explain that the opinions of characters (for whom said disapproval is entirely in-character) are not necessarily the opinions of the writers. It's also not indicative of the game telling you that you made a "wrong" decision. Nor is it the first time companions have disapproved of the player character's love interest—far from it. Both Origins and DA2 have some truly spicy party banter in that regard, and Inquisition keeps with tradition. Love it or hate it, companions hating each other is a time-honored Dragon Age tradition.

And in this case, the disapproval is the point. The Inquisitor is meant to receive the disapproval and decide that Sera is worth it to her. The point is that the Inquisitor cares so much for Sera that she openly declares her affections without regard for the disapproval of others, and that this kind of love and acceptance is entirely foreign to Sera's experience and the greatest gift she could ever have received. Sera says it outright: "Wait, wait, wait. You went to everyone and said I was your lover? Right to their faces? They must have… Oh, Vivienne must have puckered pinky-tight! Best gift ever."

And if you've read my other Sera Series posts, or simply spent a lot of time talking to Sera, it's no mystery why this means so much to her.

This is what this quest is all about. And to me, it's one of the most moving expressions of love in the whole game and maybe in all of the Dragon Age games. I love it so much. I get emotional re-watching it in YouTube clips. I cannot imagine being happier if the Inquisitor had just, I don't know, baked Sera a cake, or brought her a bouquet of flowers from the meadows filled with bees. This quest gets at the core of who Sera is, her sharpest hurts and deepest desires. It is deeply meaningful and it is perfect for her.

My sole complaint about this quest is that I never got to see the hat full of apples with Corypheus's face drawn on it and everyone hitting it with sticks.

The 12 Classes of Time.

“Time is the Aspect of music, of death, of rebellion, of not accepting what comes in the way that it comes. Time is an Aspect that caused much suffering in the comic, but it is also the savior-Aspect. Time Players seem to “go against the clock”, they are usually either terrified of death or completely alright with the idea of it. They work in melodious ways, are impatient, and enjoy the destination more than the journey itself. They are hardly stable, extremely dedicated and stubborn. Time Players are fighters, sometimes even in a literal way. They also tend to be revolutionary, depending on the Class. They can be related to music, since the ticking of the clock is a reference to melody and heartbeat”.

“In more miscellaneous descriptions, Time Players can be enjoyers of History. Since Aspects can be literal sometimes, many Time Players struggle with the concept of Time, are bad at keeping track of time, feel like they don’t have time to do all that they want to do, like they have to catch up. Time is the opposite Aspect to “Space”, which is patient and conforming. Time is an Aspect of change”.

Sburb Players each have a combination of an Aspect and a Class. Aspects are understood to represent what a player’s goals and actions in life are caused by. A Class is within an Aspect and understood to represent the way they deal with their Aspect.

The Sburb Classes are Maid, Page, Mage, Knight, Rogue, Sylph, Seer, Thief, Heir, Bard, Prince, and Witch. (Lord and Muse*).

(*Classes Lord and Muse seem to only be possible in either Cherub society or in two-player sessions. They are very absolute and it’s rare for a human to identify with their descriptions. I will have to leave them out here and only write about the remaining twelve :)

Adding the Classes to the Aspect of Time will result in twelve God Tiers. My analyses of them are as follows:

1st God Tier: Witch of Time

Witch is the Active Class of manipulation. Witches are known to “control” their Aspect or through their Aspect, both literally and figuratively. A Witch of Time, specifically, would be extremely rebellious — it is the most rebellious Class paired up with the most rebellious Aspect! —, somewhat disrespecting of the concept of time. This might mean they’ll be constantly late for meetings, or will be obsessed with the passage of hours and minutes. Witches are good at manipulating, and Time being the Aspect of death, Witches of Time are manipulators of death; that can be a very powerful God Tier. If there’s one God Tier who would play Chess against Death to not have their souls taken away, that’s the Witch of Time. They to me sound like they’d be incredible at making music, controlling the Aspect of music in whatever way they can.

Witches of Time will be aware of their surroundings, be skeptical, and again, very rebellious. They will hate being told what to do. In relation to other people, they may have a hard time being social, mostly only doing it to fit in, but wishing to be somewhere else instead. They’d also be good at influencing others’ taste in music, or any opinions they might have about the end of life. Speaking of that, not only would they fight death, they would also be completely uncomfortable thinking about it. They will hide that, though.

Witch of Time is a canon Homestuck God Tier. Damara Megido is the character that holds that title.

2nd God Tier: Heir of Time

Heir is the Passive Class of manipulation. Heirs are known to “influence” their Aspect or through their Aspect, both literally and figuratively. An Heir of Time, specifically, would be extremely quick-tempered, not at all patient about change. They would be punctual, believe they always have to be way ahead, struggle with the speed of things and be very stubborn about their ideas. Having a Class of manipulation, these Heirs would be great at influencing others, sometimes even subconsciously, to the point where they might change reality. They may lie about their past and do it so well that they start to believe the lie themselves, switching the way time worked for their lives.

Heir being a Passive Class doesn’t mean they would manipulate “less” than a Witch would. It just means the Witch would be bolder about it, while an Heir’s manipulation might be hidden. One “controls” and the other “influences”, after all, Heirs will cause results more indirectly. Heirs are also known to “become” their Aspect, sometimes even literally, so you know who we can conclude might be an Heir of Time? The Grim Reaper itself.

On a lighter note, this God Tier would also be good at music. However, I think they’d be better at listening to it than at making it. Maybe they’d have a perfect pitch, or be potential judges of talent shows.

3rd God Tier: Mage of Time

Mage is the Active Class of knowledge. Mages are known to “understand” their Aspect or through their Aspect, both literally and figuratively. A Mage of Time, specifically, would be knowledgeable about death without even meaning to. I can picture them having some sort of intuition about the underworld not knowing where it comes from. They would “understand” time, so their path might be about awareness of rebellion, of change, an incapability to stop it, spirals of thoughts even after understanding the patterns. I have read that Mages “suffer” through their Aspect, and I really see that in most Aspects. I always think of Mages having speedy minds, and in the case of Time Players, that might be even more sped up. Mages of Time would be focused on the changes around them. More literally, about the changes on the clock, the passage of time. They would be stuck with the knowledge that nothing ever stopped, never be able to take that fact away, and some might like that, while others won’t.

They would be heavily impulsive, possibly irrational sometimes. They would feel like it is “too much”, sometimes, the way the gears won’t stop turning. Most of all, they would be experienced and again, impatient. They would already know how everything is meant to go.

4th God Tier: Seer of Time

Seer is the Passive Class of knowledge. Seers are known to “study” their Aspect or through their Aspect, both literally and figuratively. A Seer of Time, specifically, would be interested in learning about dark and philosophical subjects, having an unusual interest in death, History, and the combination of both. The player with this title might be a History student, an archeologist, or have that as a hobby only. They are rebellious like any Time Player, but are much more knowledgeable and aware of it, and so might seem like a calm and collected person. Compared to other Time Classes, they would be saints. They would probably not hold the belief that impulsiveness is a bad thing, and as of result wouldn’t get too anxious about it. They would be great with organization and order, even in their thoughts. Their main motivation is learning about Time, after all.

Seers of Time wouldn’t fear death. They accept it easily as part of life. (They oppose Heirs of Life in that, imo.) In general, I see them being chill individuals, or at least they appear that way. A Seer of Time is easy to get along with, and possibly very helpful. In Sburb at least, they are extremely powerful.

It can be literally as well, with them always “keeping an eye on time”, being good with schedules and deadlines, etc.

5th God Tier: Thief of Time

Thief is the Active Class of stealing. Thieves are known to “take” from their Aspect and through their Aspect, both literally and figuratively. A Thief of Time, specifically, would be very confident in their abilities and personality. To put it more literally, they would be Masters of the clock. They’d always know what to do and when to do it and would rarely doubt themselves in that way. They’d be somewhat selfish, for example believing they should be the ones to control situations instead of sharing the power. Time is a very strong Aspect, and to be sure of your own ability with it is to be extremely trustworthy. Actually, I think they’d be very selfish. But still worthy of trust. And, of course, strong and willing to change circumstances. They’d think of themselves first, of their own death, of their own rhythm, but this doesn’t mean they won’t care for anyone (they will. They are still normal human beings [or trolls] after all).

A Thief of Time would be difficult to control. They wouldn’t like being controlled, really. They believe their plans are the correct ones, and trust that the ends justify the means. This seems to be a trend with all Thieves, and not only Thieves of Time. They would probably have some characteristics that people wouldn’t notice at first, being surprised when they found out. This can mean anything from a random adoration to a moral belief of sorts.

6th God Tier: Rogue of Time

Rogue is the Passive Class of stealing. Rogues are known to “redistribute” their Aspect or through their Aspect, both literally and figuratively. A Rogue of Time, specifically, would sacrifice their own time for others. Sacrifice seems to be a Rogue characteristic, going along with their Robin Hood personas. Not every Rogue would be selfless, but even the ones that weren’t would have an inclination inside themselves to share everything with others who need it. They’d share mostly, because of the Aspect, ideas relating to time and rebellion and music and death. They could be great Historians or, more literally, History teachers for real. Rogue is not really the Class of “teaching” or anything like that but they would be great at sharing their experience in every way. Rogues of Time might doubt themselves when it comes to their power. Maybe they’d be self-conscious, slightly scared of death, think that they don’t have it in them, but like every Time Player, they will have to come to their senses and learn to deal with their amount of power. And they would especifically use their powers to help the less fortunate in Time, and this can mean people who are close to death, people who are lost in reality (what’s more real than time?), enigmas about existence, or even people who are too passive and don’t know how to deal with change. Rogues of Time will be fair and less controlling than other Classes, but also completely remarkable and shiny.

They will be powerful once they develop themselves. They may take some time (literally), but it will always come.

7th God Tier: Knight of Time

Knight is the Active Class of utilizing. Knights are known to “handle” their Aspect and through their Aspect, both literally and figuratively. A Knight of Time, specifically, would deal with all kinds of rebellion-related issues. They would be into change enough that they wouldn’t know how to stand still (this applies to many Classes of Time, but especially Knight). They will fight for their Aspect, and since that is Time, they will fight, and fight, and fight, and fight. And time won’t stop for them. They’ll have to handle everything that comes with it, and be strong in the face of danger. More abstractly, they’d be a person who always feels like they have to defend their own autonomy and personal power. They would have it in them, know what they’d have to do, be realistic even when they don’t want to. However, they would possibly like putting off things they don’t want to deal with, for as long as they can, because they’re so sick of having to deal with and deal with and…

Knights of Time will probably have death around them, possibly from a very young age. Time being the Aspect of death and Knight being the Class of handling, they’d just have to work through and handle a lot of grief, to the point where they’d be, pretty much, apathetic to it. This applies to many God Tier titles, but especially to Knight of Time. They would also be confident, or at least pretend to be, and again, would never stop. They just keep going, literally.

Knight of Time is a canon Homestuck God Tier. Dave Strider is the character that holds that title.

8th God Tier: Page of Time

Page is the Passive Class of utilizing. Pages are known to “rise” their Aspect or through their Aspect, both literally and figuratively. A Page of Time, specifically, would be doubtful of their own understanding of the world and how they should behave. Pages tend to be naive or easily manipulated, and when it came to Time these players would be easily convinced or guided toward patience. Time is about everything but patience, yet these Time Players will askew themselves from action by the influence of others. They would maybe have delusions, a complicated relationship with reality, or they might just rely a lot on what they fear losing.

Pages usually empower themselves (or others) through the development of their own powers, and I don’t only mean this literally. A Page of Time will learn about limits and where they stand (not only where others say they should stand). With music, they might be really attached to it, possibly not being able to do much without headphones on their heads. They will seem fragile to other people but would have the potential to become an indestructible destruction machine. If they want to be evil, then they are pretty much the scariest type of evil there can be. But if they want to use everything for the good, it’ll be great to be around them. Just don’t ever doubt them when they learn about it all.

9th God Tier: Maid of Time

Maid is the Active Class of construction. Maids are known to “create” their Aspect or through their Aspect, both literally and figuratively. A Maid of Time, specifically, would be “made of time”. Yeah, this can be really literal. They’d always be on time and know how to manage life’s rules pretty well, even if in their own turbulent way. They might be anarchists! since they have all of time in themselves and already are fed up with everything and would just be so motivated toward rebellion! They would also be attracted to Time principles, as in aging, growing, and especially death itself. Maids will be really enticed by their own powers, and their struggles in life might be about having TOO MUCH of whatever their Aspects are.

Being full of time can be being made to make rules, to change and destroy what they’re unhappy with to create more. But it can also be living to a very old age, or dying in a really unexpected and absurd way. They are made of action, and are creators of destruction. They will be extremely unpredictable, one of the most unpredictable God Tiers out there.

Maids of Time will deal correctly with their Aspects, they will certainly be gravitated to it without much trouble. What they can do is create trouble, but whatever they do they simple believe is the best way. If there’s a list of the most chaotic titles, Maid of Time is there.

Maid of Time is a canon Homestuck God Tier. Aradia Megido is the character that holds that title.

10th God Tier: Sylph of Time

Sylph is the Passive Class of construction. Sylphs are known to “build” their Aspect or through their Aspect, both literally and figuratively. A Sylph of Time, specifically, would be used to having to take care of many things, passively creating Time and managing time. They would likely be mostly accepting of things but rebellious every once in a while, surprising everyone around them with sudden insatisfaction. Though they construct the Aspect of rebellion, they do it softly, in the shadows, and that way are very discreet about their ideas. Inside, they would be chaotic even if they don’t notice it, but it wouldn’t be as clear to others like a Maid of Time would. They might have strange interests, excited about History and historical wars, politics, death and somber music. I imagine Sylphs of Time bonding with Seers about topics like Romanticism, which was an emotional and spontaneous artistic movement that stained the world we live in. (Romanticism is a good mixture of Time + the Aspect “Heart”.)

Sylphs would be singular for sure, and complex when it came to their views of the world. I imagine them being quiet, despite being Time Players. If it’s possible for a Time Player to be collected, they are the closest to it. Literal meanings can involve making excuses for people being late, always making time for everything they have to do, or, because a Player’s struggles are also marked by their God Tier, struggle with making time for everything they have to do.

11th God Tier: Prince of Time

Prince is the Active Class of destruction. Princes are known to “wreck” their Aspect and through their Aspect, both literally and figuratively. A Prince of Time, specifically, would be really controlling, possibly chaotic. They can be unpredictable, one of those people you’re not even sure of their intentions. This would be a very complicated God Tier, because Time is the Aspect of destruction, and Prince is the Class of wrecking, so they would be about “the destruction of destruction”, so… construction?

Princes tend to go against their Aspect and more toward their opposite one, because they wreck their own. Unfortunally there wasn’t a Prince of Time in Homestuck, but with that information we can theorize a Prince of Time would act like a Space Player, adoring creation and attempting to be patient and thinkers of the big picture. The thing is that they would still be Time Players, and so wouldn’t be able to deny the core parts about their own Aspect, and would be pessimistic, rebellious, motionful, etc.

The Prince of Time would be hard to detect because they destroy change, their impulses are to go against impulse, and they are walking contradictions. Still, they would be really motivated and good at solving puzzles. They would share those obvious traits with Space Players, sometimes being mistaken as one, but when looking closer it would be ridiculously easy to see: they are ultimate Players of Time.

12th God Tier: Bard of Time

Bard is the Passive Class of destruction. Bards are known to “deconstruct” their Aspect or through their Aspect, both literally and figuratively. A Bard of Time, specifically, would be entitled to control but not be so bold about it. Since they are about deconstruction, they would slowly and indirectly deny Time and its characteristics like death and rebellion and motion. Bards will rarely accept that they are Bards, having trouble with their Class from it not being innocent enough but also not aggressive enough. But Bards would be easily detectable as Bards. And they’d be incapable of going against what they want to go against.

Like Princes, the Active Class, Bards will envy the other side (that being the opposite Aspect) and somewhat wish they could be in their easier shoes. They’d silently desire the patience and acceptance of Space Players, though they wouldn’t actively try to copy them. A Bard of Time’s struggle might be with how their world seems to always be spinning around them, how death seems to be present wherever they go (even abstractly, like there being bones on the walls or dead animals in the streets), with how they couldn’t figure out music or anything that didn’t follow their own idea of melody. They’d be… confused? I think Bards are usually confused with their Aspects. They’re good at figuring things out, though.

the way izzy was received by this fandom rlly is the worst combo of how fans responded to kylo ren and how fans responded to, like, tyler durden or walter white.

anything i could say comparing izzy fans and kylo fans was already said in this fucking incredible post by @chuplayswithfire. but basically: izzy is a huge cunt to everyone in this show but fans take him at his word when he talks about being hardworking and competent, they minimize and excuse his actions and act like he's an innocent traumatized baby, and they focus on him, a shitty white antagonist, instead of any of the other interesting characters of color they could be paying attention to

but imo the thing that rlly makes a difference between izzy and kylo, and the thing that makes me compare him to those other two white dudes i mentioned above, is that unlike the movies kylo ren is in, ofmd is actually well-written

the first movie in the star wars sequel trilogy was pitched, written, filmed, and literally released with no ending for the trilogy in mind. the writing for the next movies was adjusted based on fan reactions, and major plot points were decided by studio executives deciding which events would make the movie more profitable. i should not have to explain to you that this is a terrible way to write a movie series. or a television series. or literally any kind of fucking story in the world.

our flag means death, or what we have of it so far, is not that. there's fully developed characters with given realistic motivations, instead of one-dimensional props that are jerked around by a constant tug-of-war between writers, directors, and studio executives. there are narrative plot points that are woven expertly throughout the story, not hints of storylines that are completely forgotten about by the next franchise, or storylines that were finished that are getting dug up again. there's a central theme to ofmd, unlike the new star wars movies, where the theme seems to be "how can we milk this fucking franchise for all it's worth." there's no goddamn queerbaiting

i'll admit that i've never actually seen breaking bad, and everything i know about it i've learned via tumblr osmosis. but from what i can tell, it's actually a very well-written show, and the whole point of the show is that walter white is the epitome of entitled and abusive white man who thinks he's super tough and badass and that everyone should listen to him and do whatever he tells them to do (lmao, sound familiar?). he ruins his life and the lives of everyone around him and idk he might die in the end. anyway dont do drugs.

fight club i have seen, and i can confirm that this is a fantastic movie that features, you guessed it, an arrogant white guy who represents the classic violent male power fantasy. the narrator, deeply depressed because he's a beta male, watches jealously from the sidelines as tyler durden starts seeking violence, first from just meeting up with random guys for consensual beatdowns, but it escalates as more and more men start joining the fight club (wow! the title of the movie!) until the club morphs into a terrorist group. also if you haven't seen it there's a Big Plot Twist that i haven't mentioned and it's pretty good. love that movie.

anyway the point is that both of those men are very obviously. shitty fucking guys. classic macho men (even tho tyler durden's fashion sense is fantastically fruity, for some reason) who crave power over others and respect in the form of fear. the whole point of their fucking characters is that in any generic action movie, they would be the heroes

and so many fans just. completely fucking miss this. there are hoards of dudebro fan guys who relate to these characters and go "wow, he's just like me!" and absolutely do not get the point of the thing they're watching. it is fucking baffling to see

anyway that's izzy stans!! an truly groundbreaking combo of your classic female fans who woobify evil white men and classic male fans who miss the entire point of characters who are written to subvert the expectations of what kind of role a character like izzy hands, walter white, or tyler durden would be expected to play!!!!! izzy hands is written to be an antagonist and the personification of toxic masculinity that ed is trying to escape from, and yet people are acting like he's the show's third protagonist.

because izzy would be a protagonist, in a different and much shittier story. and even though we all watched the same show where he very clearly is not the protagonist, people are applying that role to izzy and not actually looking at what role he plays in this show.

The Bad Batch x Reader – Being Protective

Warnings: Violence/ Threats/ Strong Language/ Tension/ Tinsy Bit Of Fluff (I guess)

The title probably speaks for itself. Headcanons about how the guys of the Bad Batch would protect the reader. My view on this topic could be controversial, concerning Tech and Crosshair.

Hunter: Is generally a very attentive partner, watching out for your safety. Small gestures of grabbing your hand when you jump down from a smaller obstacle; or making sure you don't pinch your fingers when dealing with heavy objects; or buckling up during one of Tech's breakneck maneuvers is completely internalized, happening practically fluidly without him having to think about it.

If you are approached by someone threatening you, he is always ready to protect you. Hunter is a reasonable guy, he gives the person a chance to change their mind and get away with it, but if this idiot still wants to harm you, he doesn't hesitate to get physical and make very clear threats. Depending on how serious the situation is, he does not hesitate to seek a final solution, that is, to end the life of the attacker, even if he does not like to do it, Hunter is definitely not a brutal man, never without good reason. Your well-being, however, is reason enough.

Hunter's senses make him especially attentive to your emotional world. He senses when you feel uncomfortable, sad, threatened, or otherwise negatively affected. He will always be alert to save you from such situations as well. He will jump into the breach for you when you are in a conflict, defending you verbally without hesitation. If he feels that something is dragging you down, he will always be there to counteract it in any way he can think of. That you are happy and well is one of his absolute priorities.

Echo: Will always be concerned that you are safe and in good shape, this also applies to your diet. He makes sure that you eat, drink and sleep enough, if someone denies you something or even all that, or intentionally prevents you from doing so, he gets angry, really angry. No one wants to argue with an angry Echo, he is stubborn about it and unyielding. Which also means if you neglect yourself, you're in for a lecture.

Putting himself in front of you protectively is practically second nature to him, happens in any dangerous situation practically automatically, he acts with you like a human shield. When going through rough terrain, you will always feel his hand on your arm or wrist, because he wants to stabilize you, make sure you don't fall and hurt yourself.

Echo may be a relatively quiet fellow, but he is consequent, and when it comes to your well-being, he is exceedingly unforgiving, no matter to what extent you have been harmed. If you have been hurt by someone in his absence, in any way, he will never forget it, and no matter when or in what condition he encounters that person, the knucklehead can expect serious trouble.

Someone who has hurt you, whether physically or mentally, he will never trust, no matter what the circumstances, even if it might be necessary for some reason, Echo will loathe that person, the only reason he won't ram his scomp link into that person where the sun don't shine, is if the person is still really important to a mission or for whatever reason you don't want him to get physical.

Wrecker: Anyone who knows that he is your partner does not dare to approach you anyway. But should someone be stupid enough to try, they will learn very quickly what the words "fatal mistake" mean. Wrecker is a teddy bear, has a good heart and is usually in a happy mood, but there are things he can't take a joke about, hurting you is one of them. Aggression is absolutely not tolerated and immediately punished severely and we all know how strong Wrecker is, that can end really ugly, even if Wrecker doesn't plan to do any serious damage. He sees red when you are in danger and reacts quite directly and sometimes a bit headless.

Wrecker thinks of himself as a walking shield when it comes to you anyway, so if you're in dangerous areas or in the thick of battle, you'll quickly notice that you're always in his shadow and his massive form shields you in some way. He likes to do this, and when you smile gratefully at him because of it, his heart swells; there is hardly anything that makes him happier than when you look up to him as your knight in shining armor.

Even from the sun he protects you, provides shade.

"Mesh'la, you're going to get sunstroke".

Wrecker is incredibly empathetic and attentive, he will always sense and see when something is dragging you down and be there to catch you or shield you from the negative, depending on what is within his capabilities depending on the situation. He will always try, even if it seems hopeless, he is not too shy to exhaust himself to protect you.

Tech: Is calm and orderly, he always keeps an eye on whether you are doing well, have had enough sleep and have eaten. He will gently but firmly point out if one of these is not the case and demand that you take better care of yourself, depending on how his mood is at the time, it may be that he more or less jokingly threatens to force you to take better care of yourself.

If someone threatens you, Tech will react calmly at first, confronting the person reasonably and logically as is his nature. He is not an aggressive person and confrontations are too repugnant to him (despite being a soldier). He is such a sweet and calm person, well usually.

However, if someone dares to hurt you, intentionally, the reasonable Tech can very quickly become a nasty guy. Tech is clever, very clever, and can become very resourceful and nasty in his fury. He does not shy away from torture (yes our calm Tech, depending on the extend of hurt you've recieved) if you have taken serious damage. He is exceedingly unforgiving about it, more so than Echo. His relationship with you is something completely different, outside of his previous life and awakens completely different sides of him when it comes down to it.

An attack on you, he sees as an attack on himself, even worse. If you have managed to win over the introverted logic machine called Tech, then you must be something special. He is connected to you on every level and even if he seems rather stoic or even static at times, he feels very intensely about you. Anyone who wants to harm you had better think it over, because believe me, no one wants to incur the wrath of a man who carries around so much knowledge, including how to inflict pain most effectively.

It's always the quiet ones that end up being perhaps the most dangerous, one way or another.

He is loving, in all his own special ways. He will gently but firmly stop you from doing things that he knows will ultimately harm you physically or mentally, because he really cares about your well-being. Anyone who terrorizes you mentally should prepare themselves for the worst, again Tech is not kidding. He may start out calm and logical, hoping to smooth things over, but his ingenuity is at the ready should your "opponent" be unyielding.

Crosshair: usually shows affection rather rarely, at least not as one might expect from a partner. But his protective instinct is extremely strong, stronger than any other Batcher. This may be due to the fact that for him, someone who gives him affection, despite the way he is and after all he has been through, is a real gift that he does not take lightly, even if he does not always show it openly. But if you mean something to him, you will feel it.

He is extremely attentive, nothing escapes his attention and one wrong move or look in your direction can already make him react or become a lurker.

Most of the time he behaves casually, unless he sees a threat, then it quickly becomes serious. Crosshair does not hesitate, he sometimes goes to extremes.

If someone is stupid enough to threaten you in an intimate way or even hurt you (Maker beware), he knows no mercy. He does not shy away from cutting off limbs and taking lives. Anyone who crosses this line does so only once.

Basically, he likes to make short work of any potential danger to you. He does not discuss or seek a peaceful solution unless he has no other choice. Who once steps on the thin ice, concerning your safety and well-being, will certainly break in thanks to Crosshair and will most likely never see daylight again.

As for your mental security, he sometimes has a hard time with that, but he tries his best, because when someone like him gets involved with someone, it's something sincere. Sometimes it is he himself who inadvertently hurts you by his special way and as soon as he notices it, he immediately regrets his actions. This will get better with time, but you have to be patient with him. If he becomes aware that someone else is terrorizing you, Crosshair will not shy away from threatening or even physically approaching the person.

He has a rough shell, but you can be sure that he will always be concerned for your safety and well-being.

"Seawolf: The Pirate's Curse" (2005) review

Surprisingly, honestly... why did I enjoy this? I guess after a couple of major misses for me in the form of "The Kidnapping" and "Beyond Forgiveness", my expectations were appropriately low, but this one actually had some likable characters and humor, and that always manages to rope me in. I have a soft spot for fun, silly action fare like this bc of childhood shows like "The Greatest American Hero", I think.

So, the title never makes any sense... what was it supposed to mean? what curse?

First and foremost, I must say TIG is looking oh-so-very pretty and rugged here- the necklaces, the bandanas, the curly-q hair, the tank tops, the sweaty, the ARMMMSSSS 😩

Initially had absolutely no clue what was going on in the beginning; a bunch of people with weird ass outfits in the dark and I was just like please no don't let that be him in the damn fucking cape and eyepatch and o n e l e g; I was like he can't possibly have one leg the whole time, right?? 🤨

But yeah I was definitely experiencing the "dear God what did I get myself into, cheers to another awful mess" 🫡🥂

Why does half the audio sound dubbed (particularly everything that comes out of Rachel's mouth)? Also props to Rachel for being the most emotionally unaffected person ever bc her reactions were so disproportionately calm to what would happen if my bf was constantly disappearing overseas and totaled my gorgeous pink car

We're getting some very Max Parrish-type hooting and hollering up in here; a concise summary of Thorpe is that he's basically if Max had a boat and was an alcoholic instead of a drug addict

We get another hallmark of TIG's movies with a slew of incredibly cringe one-liners that elicit a physical reaction of pain from me, but for every few there was actually a genuinely funny one here and there, so I'll allow it this time...

The whole "I'm a pirate, my father was a pirate, etc." speech had me ROLLING and NOT IN THE WAY THE WRITERS INTENDED I THINK BC HUH??

When he met Helene in that random room full of paintings I was sure we were supposed to take it that the mission was smth art theft-related. but no she just has a passion for maximalist design ig.

Why does the camera get randomly shaky for no reason? Very avant-garde of them

Always throws me off-guard but it's such fun to see TIG in an uncharacteristically light scene like the one where he's dancing in the parade and surrounded by the circle of dancers in the bar. At least he seemed like he was having a good time in this movie 🎉

Ramon and his lil book and the bar scene of Thorpe and Helene drunkenly arguing w each other and sitting on the side of the road was what really started to sell me

When Helene straight-up PUNCHED HER SISTER IN THE FACE like these ladies have some beef and I need to know where it stems from

This film is another great example of TIG's grossly underutilized comedic potential- a là the map reading scene

Hilarious how Carlos just shrugs like "I don't care, whatever I guess" when who he believes to be Marlena says she wants to say a dramatic goodbye to Thorpe

Ok but how did he not die?? Thank goodness but how??

Even more hilarious how the Colonel, who has had nothing but hatred and murderous intent for Thorpe throughout, is just so touched by Thorpe's being a ✨ big softie with morals ✨ that his vengeful compulsions are soothed and he's content with taking the gold like "hey bro, we're square now <3" and just fuckin walks away

Good on them for giving the treasure back to Mexico

Was legit concerned for too long there that they weren't actually going to end up together and I was screeching

DO THEY ACTUALLY USE THE SAME SHOT OF THE BOAT AT SUNSET IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MOVIE AND AT THE END?? lmaooo

Honestly, I think they could have leaned even more into the humorous aspect and the treasure hunt part of the film; made it a bit more of a National Treasure/Indiana Jones sort of thing, and I definitely would have liked some more character development, esp. for the sidekicks and villains, but overall, I award this film an unexpected 6/10. I had a good time 🙃🩷

A Cottagecore Picnic with The Butlers Part 1: First Floor Edition

That time when the First Floor butlers took you on a cottagecore picnic

Featuring: Berrien Cliane, Bastien Kelly, Lono Fontaine (separate) x gn!Reader (you/your pronouns) (can be read as platonic, romantic, whatever you want)

A/N: oh my goodness FINALLY, something Akuneko related! I had this idea for a while, but debated on whether I should actually use it for Akuneko or some other fandom, but I figured “this is a good topic to start with for them” so here we are. I was supposed to post this forever ago but lost motivation/passion for this for months. But now I’ve come back to the fandom with a fresh dedication (and also I have the game on my phone now, despite not knowing very much Japanese). But anyway, without further ado:

Let me restore your memory…

Is he making the food and drinks for the picnic? Of course he is! He can’t have the Master doing work, silly!

Obviously, you’d feel a little guilty for not doing anything (or at least I would-) so maybe you secretly made madeleines and snuck them into the basket because you know he loves them

I’m 99.999% sure Berrien planned everything weeks in advance, from the menu to the location, maybe even the specific outfits to wear (though he probably consulted Flure for that last part)

Obviously, this means that Berrien has the perfect spot for the two of you as well as the time

He brought bug spray, sunscreen, lip balm, the works! Also, he brought an umbrella just in case it rains. Can’t have the Master getting soaked to the bone and getting sick, right?

I can see him choosing a lovely open space with green grass as the location, and you’re absolutely under a giant tree for the purpose of staying in the shade (bonus points if there’s a body of water close by, like a river or lake)

You’re going there maybe a little too early for lunch (you arrive at 11:30 sharp because punctuality), but you start eating at around noon so it’s fine

Oh, and like the title says, this is a cottagecore picnic. It’s not cottagecore if there are no flowers, so you get your favorite flowers because you’re the Master and you deserve flowers.

Also, that means your outfits are very light colored and give off that fresh spring vibe

And perhaps you did a thing behind Berrien’s back again and decided to wear something that matches his outfit’s colors, even though he’s technically lower in social standing, but you cannot be stopped (and matching outfits does seem like a proper thing to do when it’s just the two of you and you’re in public)

So besides the madeleines you made as an attempt to contribute, what are you having on that picnic?

For savory food, he’s got various types of finger sandwiches, he’s got a charcuterie board (you know, those assortments of cheese and cured meats, probably with crackers too) unless you’re vegetarian/vegan, a platter of some assorted fruit slices and berries, and the “main” thing is two baguette sandwiches (if you follow a diet just imagine what’s in it is okay for you to eat)

For the drink of choice, he obviously brought his own tea blends as well as some classic teas for you, because this is Berrien we’re talking about here

Are we sure this is a picnic and not just a tea party on the ground?

Anyways, now for the moment we’ve all been waiting for: dessert

Berrien packed some fruit tartlets, some with strawberries, some with blueberries, some with kiwi, and some were just mixed fruit

And then of course he’d notice the madeleines as he’s unpacking everything, which leads to you awkwardly explaining how you felt bad for not doing anything to help so you made them to try and contribute

Which leads to a mini spiel about your position and how you not doing anything while the butlers do everything is what’s supposed to happen

But he’ll let it slide this once since you went through all the trouble and you had him in mind when you made the madeleines

Let’s just pretend you’re decent at baking here, and say the madeleines were pretty good

Good times for all :)

Except the fact that there are leftovers, and then you two stare at each other like “we’re gonna have to bring all of this back to the manor…”

But it’s fine, you’ll just eat the leftovers for dinner (even if some obscure etiquette book says it’s weird for nobles to do that or something)

So you pack up the leftovers and just sit and chat for a while after

Maybe if you’re up for it you even take a little stroll in the park

But obviously with the town’s canonically negative sentiments towards you and the butlers, you really can’t stay too long, so soon enough you have to go back to the manor

It’s okay though, you had the time of your life and you’d definitely want to do something like this again

Let’s be honest, it’s going to take a lot of convincing before he actually agrees for you to plan this cottagecore picnic

I mean really, he has the skills and attitude of a proper knight, of course your safety is top priority

But let’s say you use your brain and convince him by saying if he chooses a secluded spot and stays with you the whole time, it’s very unlikely you’ll be hurt

And if he brings up the Angel problem, just promise you’ll bring the book and tell him he’ll be coming along to protect you

In that case, he’ll say he’s coming with only for the sake of your safety, and it’s not exactly a lie, it’s just not the whole truth

To assume he’s not curious about this picnic of yours would be naïve. Of course he wants to see what kinds of food you bring (and maybe taste test a little)

So obviously you tried to make food behind his back but he caught you so he made you sit back down and tried his hand at it

It wasn’t too bad of an experience, actually, since he’s helped Lono in the kitchen before

There were no sweets made, but the menu was satisfying nonetheless

The location was atop a grassy hill where you could oversee the village nearby, and occasionally there were some clumps of weeds and wildflowers around.

You two got there at around 11:00 am, and planned to only be there for about an hour and a half

On the menu, there was meat stew (if you’re vegetarian/vegan, then it’s only for Bastien), crackers and hummus, multigrain bread, vegan herb quiche, and lemon tea

Being the Master you are though, you snuck behind his back and made yourself some apple hand pies

It’s still spring, so obviously you wanna wear something nice, and I think in this case Bastien will wear mid tone blues or greens

Meanwhile you’d probably wear whatever, since it never occurred to Bastien that you might want to coordinate outfits

There were no leftovers. None. I can guarantee it at least on Bastien’s end

He’ll never say it out loud, but he appreciated this quiet little picnic, and with some convincing, he may consider doing it again at some point

Needless to say, it was a success :)

Dazai to Odasaku about Akutagawa: "If I'd left him to his own devices, he would've ended up a slave to his own powers until he destroyed himself."

Hey hi what does that mean???

I'm probably way overthinking it but it just reminded me of when I first started my watch of the anime and we get to the opening scene with Akutagawa and Rashoumon (I can't find the exact scene but here's something similar from DA)

He implies he's not attacking with her so much as he's reining her in from devouring everything - and originally I thought, hey, that's a cool premise. It seems like there's something odd about this guy's ability; he's talking about it like it's almost sentient.

But then it didn't really get brought up again so I kind of forgot about it.

And sure maybe all the above line means is that his ability is naturally attuned to violence and he could grow more bloodthirsty, etc - but if that's the case, why bring him into the mafia?

So I started thinking about Dead Apple (which I really need to rewatch...) and how there was this focus on Atsushi as the "antithesis" of special abilities. And I just kind of thought about that because... wouldn't that title go to Dazai...?

But then it's stated that Atsushi's claws can cut through any ability... including Rashoumon (he also has some connection to the Book which absolutely must be related somehow but I'm skipping over that for the purposes of this post). Dazai describes Akutagawa as "a sword without a sheath". Is Atsushi part of the sheath? It would make a degree of sense: after all, we get a sharp reminder in the movie of how imperative it is that Dazai nullifies Chuuya's ability - it is literally needed to keep Corruption in check.

But why such a focus on self-destruction and sheathing... unless there really is something dangerous that needs to be reined in? That needs to be controlled.

I think about the dragon in Dead Apple called the "chaos of all special abilities".

I think about how the tiger and dragon are another representation of yin and yang. I think about how Atsushi and Akutagawa so clearly have that yin-yang dynamic. I think about how Rashoumon very well has the appearance of a hungry snake - or a dragon.

I think about how the focal point of an entire altered timeline was the prevention of Akutagawa from joining the mafia and the taking of his sister. And then I wonder why Akutagawa always seems to factor into Dazai's plans.

I think there's something special about Akutagawa's ability.

I think that something special, whatever it is, is very dangerous - more than we know.

You once asked your followers what did we think Mtmte sale numbers were during publication, and I don't know if I missed a follow-up to that, but what were the actual numbers? How well was Mtmte selling?

AH, thank you for reminding me!! I absolutely meant to post my thoughts and just. Blanked on doing it. brain good tm

So the reason I had asked that is that there's a whole thing about how a lot of folks in this fandom are not like, Comic People TM generally, and perceptions of how comics sell outside the industry/fanbase versus how they actually sell is a big thing. And I had a sneaking suspicion that a) a lot of people in MTMTE/LL fandom think the comic was much more successful than it actually was relative to other comics, and b) that comics period are much bigger sellers than they actually are. (Comics here meaning monthly Western releases.)

And I was right! People gave BONKERS numbers. People said they thought it sold at least 100,000 issues a month on a regular basis. Some people said literally millions. Someone said it 'wasn't that successful' so probably 'only' sold around 75,000.

To give some perspective on those figures, 100,000 is a lot for the best selling comic issue in the entire world that month to sell. If Batman or whatever hits 100k that month, it's probably a big hyped issue or something! One of the things that always astonishes people is that the MCU being the biggest film franchise in the world for like a fucking decade now has in no way changed this. X-Men movies make hundreds of millions. This does not translate into the comics selling significantly more than they used to. (If you want to know more, I highly HIGHLY recommend these two essays by Colin Spacetwinks that go over the historical causes in astonishing detail.)

All that out of the way, let's talk what MTMTE did do numbers wise. In a word: not great, dropping to Very Not Great by the end of LL. Let's cut this, it's gonna get long I think.

MTMTE settled down after its launch at like, around 11-15k shifting per issue month to month. This is... well, for a non big two comic publisher (so, not DC or Marvel), this is kind of average? Not in the sense that this is middling performance, because that's really not great numbers, but in the sense that most comics are not financially succesful period. At DC or Marvel that would be cancellation numbers for a lot of titles. At IDW, it was... well. Average! (Contrary to popular belief, their TF titles were not their biggest seller/license. That was, at that time, MLP by a factor of 2:1. The FiM boom was real.)

This is around on par with exRiD as well, by the way. TF comics just... sold around that much. Steadily, without any great drop off in sales over time once settled, but never really getting more. And the thing IDW spent its whole damn time with the TF license doing was trying and failing to fix this. Every soft reboot, the 2019 reboot, all of it was related to them trying to find a way to bring on and keep new readers to bring the numbers up. And it never, ever worked.

Which sounds surprising, right? MTMTE did bring on new readers. Lots of them. Why didn't the sales figures go up? Well, I have a theory. Which is that the people it brought on were not people who were into other comics and gave TF a go, but instead people for whom TF was not just a first Transformers experience, but their first time with Western comics too. Which matters because comics are sold in a way that is fucking insane that means a lot of the ways people read comics Just Don't Count. And that was especially true back in 2012, when the digital comics industry was much less developed than today.

The reason being: only preorders of individual issues are 'counted' by comics publishers traditionally when tallying up how a comic is performing, really. If you walk into a comic book shop a week after it came out and buy it off the shelf? Does very little for the comic. If you buy it in trades? Nowadays this isn't quite so true as graphic novels have become a much larger part of the market, but traditionally, that really did not help a comic series avoid ongoing cancellation at all. You had to pre-order from a comics retailer, because that dictated how many issues they would pre-order in for future issues, and that was used to judge what series were doing well. Nobody explains this to the average consumer who just wants to read a neat comic. IDW did no work explaining this to new readers. You only know this if you are a Comics Person TM. And a bunch of teen and early 20s new-to-comics people who found and loved MTMTE through word of mouth did not know this, I think! WHY WOULD YOU. THIS IS A TERRIBLE BUSINESS MODEL. (again, there are historical reasons for it; the essays linked explain it.)

This is why Lost Light and Optimus Prime and Til All Are One got the relaunches. An old comics industry standby is to try (and fail) to artificially pump up numbers by relaunching as a new #1 issue and pretend it's a new series to try and attract new readers. That was all editorial fiddling to make the numbers go up. And it failed. Miserably. LL's sales figures infamously fucking tanked compared to MTMTE's early days. It ended at more like 5k a month, which is insta-cancellation levels even for smaller publishers tbqh. I mean that's dire. There were a lot of factors that were at play there. A full analysis is beyond me tbh!

When people say it 'made no sense' to reboot in 2019 and 'cancel their most succesful TF comic(s)' about MTMTE/LL etc, it's just important to know that numbers wise, that is not what happened. Every single IDW TF comic got to cancellation sales numbers and that's what the hard reboot of IDW2 basically was. LL especially was performing atrociously by the standards of its industry (and yes, the comics industry has ludicrous business practices and it's basically impossible to perform well under any circumstances, but that's not the main point here). The cancellation wasn't out of the blue and it wasn't IDW killing off a high performing comic arbitrarily. It cancelled every TF comic performing badly at once; that just happened to be. Like. Every TF comic at the time. And I assume they turned it into a hard reboot because that was like, the one thing they hadn't tried yet.

This got really long, oooops jskhdkjg but. Yeah. Basically, the perception in fandom is often VERY skewed versus what actually happened.

#sidenote: most ppl who DID say they were familiar with comics guessed correctly. #almost everyone who said that guessed 7-20k a month which is around right.

“What are you working on, my love?” Your partner asks, as he takes a seat by your side, leaving a soft kiss on your cheek.

“Give me a minute…” you reply absentmindedly, as you adjust a few settings on your screen.

Then he notices what you’re actually so focused on: vivid images of TRIGGER concerts flash on your screen, strategically arranged, combined with locations, lyrics and song lists.

“Yes!” You whisper-shout to yourself, stretching your arms after saving your progress. Then you relax against the sofa’s backrest, sighing with a smile.

“That’s us?” Tenn questions, intently looking at your laptop, shades of pink, blue and white accented over a dark background around all the moving pictures and videos displayed.

“That’s right!” You confirm proudly. “Since Yaotome productions and you guys are no longer working together…” You mumble that bit sadly, thorns of disdain prodding at your heart when you think of the people responsible for TRIGGER’s current predicament. “I’m managing your official website for the time being.” You explain. “Here, I’ll show you.” With a few clicks and hovering your mouse over some of the images, the homepage comes up.

“See? I added gifs and images from your concerts,” you show him, turning your computer around so your lover can get a better view. “And if you click on them,” you demonstrate. “Ta-da! The list of songs you performed on each of them appears. But that is not all.” Tapping on the tactile mouse, you continue. “I added short samples of every song, as well as links to purchase your albums online. What do you think?” You ask Tenn, a small smile curling your lips.

“You really did all this?” He asks, staring in wonder at all the work you’ve put into the design.

“Mhm! Oh, and I forgot to tell you! I added a ‘news’ tab too, that will update according to dates and locations where you’ll be performing next, of course with links to buy tickets as well.

“Amazing…” Tenn utters, demure fuchsia gaze captivated by all your hard work currently on display. “You are amazing, my love.” He whispers, eyes leveling you in hues of tenderness and adoration.

You giggle.

“You are amazing, Tenn…” Your hand finds his, thumb gently rubbing over his soft skin. “This is the least I could do for you now…”

And so, the rest of the afternoon goes by with you two cuddled on his bed, cozy blankets all around you, as you show the modern day angel more of your creations, TRIGGER’s songs playing in the background.

Something Tenn is very drawn to as well when it comes to you are your leadership abilities. To see you taking initiative and bringing others together… he feels very proud of you (and if you’re in public he totally has to restrain himself as to not hug you from behind and cuddle into you right then and there).

We're halfway through season 2 and honestly where did the time go?

But with half of the season behind us, I kind of wanted to group together what I've found out and use them as a jumping off point for theories - this will contain spoilers in the form of discussing leaked plot details and screenshots from those that have seen the screeners, along with a few things pulled from reviews.

So episode by episode...

The Crossing/Retrieval

I'm keeping these two together because from the redditor that's been talking about the screeners (CanCalyx is the username) has said this is a two parter, with the connecting theme being the emotional fallout of Echo leaving. The bit of Omega and Tech talking about being a family from one of the trailers is apparently pulled from The Crossing. Other than this though the plot backdrop is apparently a basic mission structure.

(I would hope that they would also bring up Crosshair here in one of these episodes, at least a mention, but I'm also leaving room for the simple fact that the only one who routinely brings up Feelings is Omega and for obvious reasons she never had the same kind of bond with Crosshair as she did with Echo, so Echo leaving would be much harder for her to process.)

These seem like two pretty important emotionally but less plotty episodes, but I'm looking forward to them because I Crave That Emotional Agony. Make me cry, guys, just do it.

Metamorphosis

Okay so I'll be real, I have heard NOTHING about this episode whatsoever. Not a blip. Which probably means it's either extremely plot relevant and leakers don't want to spoil it or it's extremely episodic. Before the midseason I probably would have said extremely episodic but I admit I'm super curious now if the Metamorphosis is somehow related to our Believer clone and what the hell they're doing with these clones. Clone X, which is apparently what he's officially being called, called Rex 'limited' in some way, so I doubt he's just an exceptionally loyal clone. Something was Done to him to make him... unlimited. So given it's title this would be a very good place to find out a little bit more about the Plot that's going on, especially since the next episode is-

The Outpost

So this is our next planned Crosshair episode. I've heard both a lot about this episode and nothing at all because while everyone seems to agree that it's absolutely fantastic and heartbreaking it seems to be a huge pivotal plot episode. The only thing I know for sure is that it is a Crosshair episode, it seems to be where our scattering of unseen Crosshair shots are from, and it will take him to an emotional breaking point and personal revelation. One of the reviews I've seen floating around mentions Crosshair finding out the horrible purpose clones are perfectly suited for now that they're being decommissioned, which is why I think Metamorphosis could tie into this. We get a little more information and then Crosshair breaks whatever this conspiracy is open and it completely changes his entire outlook. I'm making an assumption that this is going to be the start of his redemption arc and defection from the Empire because that's what I want to have happen but also I don't see people getting so universally pumped about a character arc that ends with him in the same basic place that he started at.

My theory for what shakes him up so bad? I mentioned it in another post but honestly I think that Howzer might have been turned into one of these Believer clones. He's a character with no previous connections other than seeing him in season one, he was purposely left alive, very distinctive in design, and Crosshair has personal experience with him. So I think that his breaking point might be seeing just what the Empire will do to someone he is personally responsible for handing over to them. Crosshair never gives an indication that he truly understands what the chips can do and what having an Enhanced chip even means, so this would be a wake-up call both to what the empire truly is and what the empire has already done to him. He's the only clone we've seen undergo the chip enhancement procedure, he would have been the first test of something like this, and this is what he would have become if the chip hadn't been removed after Bracca.

Anyway I took the day after this episode off work because whatever happens I am certain to be in shambles.

Pabu

The only confirmed info I've seen from this episode is that it 'gives the batch what they think they want' which is exceptionally ominous. Reviewing what they think they want, I believe they've finally found a place off the Empire's radar - possibly an uncharted planet that Phee has given them the coordinates to? - and that Pabu is the name of the planet. Crosshair apparently appears in every episode post The Outpost, so this could switch between them on Pabu and whatever the hell Crosshair is up to as a b plot? (my dream scenario is that if the Howzer thing is correct he's trying to get Howzer's chip out to Fix him but that is very specific and relies on me being right about several other things so I'm not counting on it lol)

Anyway, I think that without the constant concern of missions and the Empire and war, the batch will finally run out of things to distract themselves with and be forced to deal with the fact that their family is incomplete. They spend a lot of time trying to avoid dealing with their feelings and emotions, and their lifestyle makes that pretty easy but take away the constant threats? Yeah they've got nothing. So I think that this is where they have to decide that they do want to join the fight, or at least that they can't just stay here forever.

Tipping Point

So I'm guessing this is our War Mantle of the season, the mission that leads them into the finale. If they've left Pabu at this point then they would probably make their way to Coruscant since that was where they left Echo - possibly Crosshair has also made his way here too? Some kind of strike against the Empire because he decided to go insane in the other direction?

I think the point of this episode is to bring everyone back together and provide the, well, tipping point into the finale. We know that Echo comes back sometime in the first fourteen episodes - interestingly, the leaker on reddit said that Echo didn't come back and is being a little shady when asked about the leaked Echo & Omega hug from twitter, so my guess is that this happens towards the very end of the episode as some kind of surprise The Calvary Has Arrived scenario and they're trying to avoid spoilers. I do think that Crosshair will be brought in with Echo and that Echo & Rex will be the thing that finally puts him back on a collision course with everyone else.

The Summit/Plan 99

THE FINALE! So from the title 'the Summit' I'm assuming we're going to Mount Tantiss finally. I'm also guessing that they won't be alone, Echo and Rex being separated out to continue freeing clones from the Empire could be a lead in for bringing in more clones to assist along with Crosshair, playing a similar role to Sabine staying behind on Mandalore in Rebels.

I'll be honest I don't have a TON of theories on this one because I need to see how the earlier episodes shake out to really figure out what track I'm on and also because no one has seen them and so there's been Zero leaks to go off of. However, I don't think that we're going to be getting any major character deaths in it, because TBB hasn't relied heavily on character death in general. It also feels way too early in the series to do something like that, it's only season two.

Honestly, I'm expecting none of this to be right but I wanted to get all of my theories down in one place now that we're on the back half of the season. I am vibrating to find out what's next.

so like. i don’t think dsmp should have a reboot in terms of like. how reboots typically are. same story same characters just told in a ‘better’ way now that they know better. 

i wouldn’t mind the title of dsmp 2 or whatever related to ‘dream smp’ though. 

i think it would be fun if they made another server with all the same people, or at least most of the same people (whomever wants to return), and just. started fresh, completely fresh. new characters, new lore, new story. completely and utterly. not a sequel either or at least not a complete sequel. no one referencing events of the dsmp (unless, maybe for a handful of characters it applies to their lore if they chose). 

like the idea of a “reboot” with rehashing the same characters and story and lore is bad. 

but if they simply just make a new server on 1.19 and invite all the people that is already on the server and go ‘play and make stuff up as you go’ then that is absolutely fine, and i actually encourage it? 

because a lot of the newer people, like eryn or cpk or aimsey, and even some of the moderately new like hannah and boomer and foolish and puffy, etc, will then get to be there from the beginning, and have more of a chance to story tell, if they wish to. they’ll also have more time to make things their own instead of trying to shoehorn in things to an already active and ongoing plot. 

i think in this sense, if they make a new server that will be fine and okay, even if some peoples’ stories from the dsmp end up not getting told? its overall their choice with how they want to continue their characters, and that includes not at all, and if they chose that they’d rather start something new, that could be fun. 

besides having new characters with new stories and plots being told through the minecraft medium can be SO fun. 

we see this with so many other minecraft based fandoms, how they do “reboots” without being related to prior ones, or seasons if you will. think of the last life/third life/double life series, where they all have lore and stories and stuff but it’s reset, for the most part, every season. then they tell something different. 

like. honestly a reboot or season 2 could be VERY GOOD if it’s actually a blank slate, or like 98% a blank slate (again some characters i think could benefit or have ways to be connected to the dsmp as their backstory and have it work). 

i think you guys are just really scared of change and things ending up horribly. 

if, and i mean if, the reboot is how i’ve said as some sort of blank slate server where these guys get to do stuff all over but new with different characters, it will ultimately be good. 

the dream smp as a server has been ongoing for 2+ years. some of these people haven’t even gotten to explore or play on the server due to lore. think of cc!dream. he had to do a whole out of character stream after the prision break because he genuinely hadn’t seen most the builds that happened since he’d been imprisioned, and he wanted to see them. let alone actually just getting to play minecraft with friends. 

the dsmp has become so lore heavy that it is story being told through minecraft, not minecraft with a story being told. 

they don’t get to mess or fool about much anymore, and again i think a reboot would let them be able to do this. 

we’d get that nostalgic feel of how casual rp was on the dsmp during 2020, we’ll get to enjoy new characters and immerse ourselves in a new story with new lore. 

this is a good thing, i think. i genuinely don’t think most the cc’s on the server would even be for a total reboot. a lot seem to want to be done with the dsmp story like, 6 months ago. 

i think a lot want to do new things, so a “reboot” will probably just be a season 2 type deal with a new story, new characters, new world, etc. and i am excited for that.

Meu Listens to Teenage Gizzard (2010-2011)

Preliminary

Technically this was a 2020 release, but the songs are from the very very early days of gizz ^_^ then one day they decided to put them out into the world for real... some of these songs were made before Ambrose was even in the band!

It’s a garage punk, surf kinda psych rock compilation album. Its very lo-fi, like you can hear the noise bouncing off of the walls. Made back when Stu was still couch surfing I reckon, and they were just playing at random shows and probably weren’t even called King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard yet. it’s cool to think about that kind of era, for any band i think. The novelty of being just a whatever group of guys playing music just cuz! it’s kind of beautiful.

This is actually the first gizz album I got on vinyl (along with Butterfly 3000). It was a gift from my mother... ^_^ she must’ve just picked the first albums she saw on the Gizzverse store HA! I havent listened to it yet but the disc is SUPER pretty, honestly one of my fav I own. it’s the... blue cloudy holy water pressing by needlejuice. cool..!

Oh yeah... so given this is the first one I’m listening to, and I know that there won’t be much to say about the songs, this will be quite simple. That is the nature of this album.

I basically am just listening + writing + have the Genius page open on another monitor for lyrics. And then maybe I’ll look for related things about this album (and all the others) like live vids and trivia and yeah. ok.

king gizzard is born!!!

1. Hey There (3:57)

It’s a song about falling in love. It’s cute. I did not know that in the middle of the song he goes “Girl what’s in my hair?” a buncha times. I like how jumpy that part sounds! It’s a simple garage song. It feels really laid-back, like compared to how the gizz albums after this open. Like I think of Elbow from 12 Bar Bruise and it has a bit more of a punchy and organized vibe than this. Teen Gizz is like the most barebones sound… it’s cool.

2. Ants & Bats (3:13)

The like, bassline I think, that plays throughout the whole song is so cool. This song feels menacing. Ohh the part at around 1:40 where the key changes! What that’s so cool I didn’t expect that. This song feels like bugs crawling, I guess that makes sense. Bugs stalking around their environment being evil and awesome. These lyrics here are also very good:

3. Sleep (3:40)

Stu loves writing songs about sleep! (Sleep Drifter, Sleepwalker, I’m Sleepin’ In) Wow!

I got up early And you've got up too And you pull me under And you say "My leg" But I don't wanna go back to sleep again But I don't wanna stay like this for five more minutes

This is cute, he’s writing about his partner. I guess that is kind of a theme in this album because you will hardly see that in the music going forward (here and there, like in Honey, or the Butterfly 3000 title track)

It’s very bouncy! A lot of these songs are just bouncy and are a little bit hard to distinguish from each other. And it seems Stu is always making noises like he sounds like he’s running around in circles in a chamber or something.

4. Summer! (2:48)

I’ve seen this before! In the future!

It's hot, it's mean, summer, to me Green grass, won't last, sky blue, me too

These are lyrics that are repurposed in the Gumboot Soup song Muddy Water!!! It’s cute. Absolutely a summer feeling song ^_^

Ah now this album is starting to make sense to me. It’s the kind of album I will have on in the background. But that’s good. Some music is like that, where it sounds better when they are played as “accompaniment music.” I’d listen to this while I’m outside and it’s really hot. Since I’m traveling this summer to go see Gizz play live, maybe I’ll listen to this a bunch while I am outside. I think that would be nice.

I’ve always loved how, in both this song and Muddy Water, that there’s kind of a movement the song simulates in my mind. It feels like stepping one foot in front of the other but not at the same time. Like the left foot stays in the air for a long time as you bring it over and the right foot comes over really quickly. And you wave your arms out like an airplane would make turns. Kind of like how a drunk person would walk maybe, lol? Like in a comical sense. A lot of songs can evoke this imaginary feeling of a specific kind of movement/kinesthetic sensation.

5. Eddie Cousin (2:38)

The lyrics here are very simple!!! OK, kind of goes without saying because thats how this album is. Hehe. Also there’s a female vocalist in the back here huh? This definitely seems like the most garage song so far. Like I actually feel like I’m in a garage with a buncha people because some friend told me that they know some guys who play music and they invited me to go listen and it’s just this really freeball kinda party thing happening its sooooo funny. This song is cool.

Also they played it on TV? Lol. This is a funny video. Look how young they are ‘_ `

6. Fried (3:10)

Ohh, the beginning kind of reminds me of how Eyes Like The Sky sounds. But then it gets back to more garage. Yknow how it is !!!

I suppose another part of the album where I am thinking, “this is so funny, to think about the kind of music Stu is writing nowadays, and how complex it all has become.” And that’s literally just how evolution is. Over 12 years or so. But even then this is still good ^_^

7. Good To Me (2:23)

Oh yeah I like this one! It has a more sudden start and it’s just a catchy tune idk. It’s swing?? ohhh. And that female voice is back. Oh but “The repetitive lyrics make it very clear that the girl in the song doesn’t treat the narrator well.” Oh How Unfortunate. Neat song though.

8. Tomb/Beach (3:46)

OHH ^_^ Woa this one is especially good! Like all the rest are nice quaint songs but this one has a much cooler vibe to me. It has more interesting lyrics, I love how it opens, it sounds like a wave crashing a lot into like a really small cave so there’s a lot of pressure into one small space. Like a whirlpool.

Definitely makes sense!!! But yeah, the guitar soundsss or whatever that play in the beginning and the end of the song cus that’s where you hear them more isolated. I love those. Awesome song.

9. Trench Foot (1:55)

AHHH this song is hitting me with a pool noodle thats what it feels like. OHH THERES HARMONICA!!! Hello Ambrose =D I love all the chanting and yelling.

There’s a lot more instrument sounds here with that harmonica like I kind of hear some kinda clanging and ohh its cool. Short song but cool.

10. Life Is Cool (2:10)

YEAHH!!! I already listen to this a bit, out of all the songs in the album! This my favorite! It’s so so so fun and I think encapsulates very very early gizz the best!

Omg, there’s also a little more lyrics about self harm… Interesting because this is the most cheerful sounding on this album I think. But I suppose I can understand it. It’s kind of a careless attitude song.

I can not describe specifically how wondrous this song is though. Like the rest of this album it’s like awesome crashing waves. No wonder the album cover is Like That. But it’s so so cute. I like that it’s the closer.

This is such a “King Gizzard” song to me. The gizz songs that have this particular effect on me, where they make me particularly happy in a sense separate from how usually makes me happy. From the specific composition of the song, there is like this Minutia of high twangy guitar notes that play at the second set of verses about a minute in the song and I think they are cute. All the woos and chanting and stuff. They’re in all the other songs but it seems special here I think. It is sooo joyous on somewhat of a more overarching scale. OK, I realize now that it literally just makes me think about how “life is cool,” isn’t that so silly. Well it’s awesome and I love it.

And that is kind of a feeling that I experience throughout all of the discog. This really intense feeling of insurmountably and awe and like gratefulness, or something. Some songs just REALLY capture that and so. Life Is Cool is definitely one of those.

I wish I could hear it live someday but. They’ve only played it once ever. Alas!

Afterthoughts

Theres so much noise in this album. I love the guitar feedback sounds and how rough it is. It sounds like they made the songs on this album with a metal can and some nails. And they kicked some dirt around and it got eeeverywhere <- they just did that for fun though.

I think it’s cute! There really is not much else to say but having the context of all the music I have to listen to next is really cool... Because I already see the path of progression and evolution of the band and whatever. Humble beginnings... ‘w` Consensus: cool kicky summer album. life is cool is my favorite. so cute, so youthful.

Right, so, since this ship is apparently just going to be a permanent, inescapable symbiote settling itself down inside my brain regardless of my feelings on the matter, I am just surrendering to inevitability and writing some of the post-game adventures and relationship negotiations of Astarion and my...

... illithid Tav.

It's fascinating, really, to contemplate how the ceremorphosis would affect Tav's personality and behaviour (not to mention their relationship with their god, as one who was/is a cleric, and what said god might think of all this and decide to do about their divine magic he grants), particularly when your Tav is someone whose base personality is very much at odds with a lot of what are widely considered to be racial traits, or at least predispositions, for illithid. And I get that a big part of what Larian was going for in the game was a critique of the idea that invariably evil races would exist at all, rather than people with choices and varying levels of temptation to do evil, who are shaped and influenced by their surrounding societies; a fair bit of BG3 was iterations upon the nature vs nurture debate, typically coming down fairly firmly on the side of nurture, really.

(There's also the explanation I 100% made up and am now going with, that Orpheus's extended protection allowed Tav's brain the time and the opportunity to form new connections and pathways, grow around and slowly influence the parasite right back, acting to sort of imprint a measure of their personality onto it so that by the time it finally took over and changed them, the change was rather less extreme than it otherwise might have been.)

But at the same time, this can't just be a choice without any teeth behind it; if Tav doesn't lose anything, their sacrifice becomes meaningless and the story itself... well, boring, really. Lose anything besides their soul, that is, which is now floating aimlessly around the Astral Sea or whatever (just waiting to be stuffed back into a recreated human Tav body by a Wish spell, thus leading to an incredibly confusing and angst-filled two Tavs situation down the line, but I digress).

Which means that I am now getting to have so much fun coming up with various ways a goody-two-shoes Tav who just lost a bunch of empathy and picked up a helping of sadism would express these traits, bearing in mind the fact that their vampire maybe-boyfriend is already rather freaked out and skittish regarding the entire situation, has a rather unpleasant history of controlling people in his life hurting him for fun, and is going to be having to deal with the constant looming background wariness of Tav someday deciding to turn him into their literal thrall, which he also gets to frequently be reminded of thanks to all the people on the outskirts of their lives who assume he most likely already is. All things of which Tav is fully aware, and carefully balancing because at core they really do want him to not just stick around, but to be doing so entirely willingly. And for him to be happy, more generally. They just also want to... play with him a little, too.

(As a sidenote, some of the D&D lore regarding how illithid relate to and view their thralls is quite interesting!)

I haven't gotten to explore a scenario this promising and constantly on the verge of total disaster (but with so so much capacity for trust and caring to win out over everything stacked against them, which of course it will because I'm a sucker for a good happy ending the characters had to work their asses off for) in years, it's beautiful. Tav just got an entire royal court full of githyanki going around referring to Astarion as their heart by answering with that when Orpheus asked what he was to them for title/identification purposes (i.e., Tav's companion, consort, etc etc), and the sheer embarrassment of being called that fifty times a day by glaring, disgruntled gith is absolutely killing him.
